SAFETY HAZARDS – VITON SEALS Synthetic rubber O-ring seals and gaskets manufactured with fluorine (also known as fluoroelastomers) produce highly corrosive hydrofluoric acid when subjected to temperatures above 315°C (600°F). Brand names associated with these types of O-rings and seals are Viton, Fluorel, and Tecnoflon.

AVOID INJURY FROM BACKOVER ACCIDENTS

WARNING Hydrofluoric acid is extremely toxic to human tissue. Do not touch any objects that may be contaminated with hydrofluoric acid. Symptoms of exposure may not be immediately evident. If exposure is suspected, seek medical attention immediately, even in the absence of symptoms. Observe the following procedures when inspecting components that have been subjected to high temperatures or fire:

Clear all personnel from the area before moving the machine. Watch for bystanders who may enter the work area. Use the horn to warn bystanders before moving the machine.

• Visually inspect any seals or gaskets which have been heated; they will appear black and sticky.

When using a signal person to help guide the machine, keep that person in view at all times. Be certain that the signal person is clear of the machine before travelling in reverse.

• Do not touch any heat-damaged seals or gaskets.

To avoid backover accidents:

• Determine the material composition of any seals or gaskets that have been damaged.

• Look around the entire machine area before backing up the machine.

• If the seals or gaskets are fluoroelastomers, the affected area must be decontaminated immediately. Natural rubber and nitrile materials do not require decontamination.

• Keep the motion alarm in proper working order. The motion alarm must sound when the machine travels in forward or reverse. • Use a signal person when backing up if the view is obstructed. Keep the signal person in view.

• Wear disposable heavy duty neoprene gloves, an apron, eye protection, and face protection while decontaminating the area.

• Learn and understand the meaning of all flags, signs, and markings on the job site. Know who is responsible for signalling.

• Wash the contaminated area thoroughly with limewater (calcium hydroxide solution).

• Keep windows, mirrors, lights, and cameras in proper working order.

• Dispose of soiled gloves, rags, and other protective equipment safely according to local environmental regulations.

• Dust, rain, snow, and fog may reduce visibility. Reduce speed and use proper lighting.

NOTE: Burn discarded items only in an approved incineration process where the dangerous materials are treated by alkaline scrubbing.
