STEERING The Rexpac is directionally controlled by means of a standard steering wheel turned in the conventional manner. The steering wheel is connected directly to an ORBITROL rotary servo control. A hydraulic pump, belt driven from the engine provides the oil flow and pressure to the servo control at the steering wheel and is directed to the power steering cylinder at the front by means of two hydraulic lines.

Directly following is a hydraulically operated forward and reverse transmission. Coupled to the output of the hydraulic transmission is a 4-speed synchromesh type manually shifted gear box. drive to each pair of wheels. A full locking type differential is available as an optional feature.

The differential axle shafts are mounted in double tapered bearings on the outboard ends, and are lubricated by the differential gear oil.

A sprocket is bolted to each axle shaft and extends into the chain drive housing. The differential and axle shafts are rigidly mounted, while the chain cases are free to move from side to side and the opening betwegn axle shaft and chain case is closed with a flexible boot.

At the rear of the right and left hand chain case, an axle shaft is installed in tapered bearings protruding from both sides of each case to accomodate the keyed hubs, wheels, brakes, etc. The bearings are internal and lubricated by the chain lubricant. With the hub, axle, wheels, etc. rigid in relation to the chain case and the case free to pivot on each end, wheel oscillation is possible.

STEERING CYLINDER, HYDRAULIC

The hydraulic steering cylinder is double acting and operates with a working pressure of approximately 300600 PSI. A periodic check should be made for tight hose connections at the cylinder.

Each end of the cylinder is secured to a non-adjustable base. No adjustment in length is required. The base and rod end of the cylinder are fitted with a ball and socket type bearing so that the cylinder pivots with the turn of the wheels.

In the event the cylinder is in need of repair, a repair kit is available from the factory. Disassembly of the cylinder is as follows: (Fig. 4)

On the back end of each chain case is a large adjusting bolt and lock nut. Turning the bolt to the right or clockwise direction pulls the entire chain case, wheels, etc. toward the rear of the machine with resultant tightening of the drive chain. The drive chains should be kept tight, free from slack, at all times. Inspection of the chain may be made by removing the cover plate on top of the chain case.

1. Be sure the cylinder is not under pressure before removing cylinder.

2. Disconnect the two hydraulic hoses from the cylinder. Flush hoses after removing. Remove bolts at base and tod end of cylinder which holds cylinder in place and remove cylinder.

3. The cylinder may be held in a vise, gripped lightly, at the base end.

4. Remove snap ring(A), pull piston and rod assembly (B) out against the cylinder head (C) by tapping against shoulder of rod base (D), this will free the cylinder head (C) from cylinder (E).

5. Remove nut (F) from shaft (G). The piston (H) and cylinder head (C) may now be 'slid off shaft

FRONT AXLE

The Rexpac is equipped with five front wheels, the center being a single, and the outer in pairs. Each axle for the pairs of wheels, is center pivoted for wheel oscillation, and all wheels are connected to an upper "walking beam" by means of struts for further oscillation. The walking beam pivots on two center pins.

Front wheel hubs rotate on tapered bearings that should be repacked every 1,000 running hours. When bearings are reinstated, they should be adjusted to 0 preload.

Lubricate all fittings weekly.

(G). Seal (J) may be pryed out from cylinder head. Remove "0" rings (K), (L), (M), (N) and leather ring (P).

6. Clean all parts in solvent or kerosene and 'soak new "0" rings, seal and leather ring in hydraulic oil before reassembly. Inspect shaft and piston, if scored, they 'should be replaced.

7. Press new seal (J) into cylinder head (C) with lip of seal facing the outside. Install "0" ring (K), leather seal (P) and "0" ring (L). Slide

9. Slide piston and rod assembly into cylinder. It may be necessary to tap the cylinder head in place to bottom on shoulder in cylinder. Replace snap ring (A).

10. Reinstall cylinder on machine. Add clean hydraulic oil to reservoir to oil level.

VT16 POWER STEERING PUMP (Gas Power)

The assembly and construction of the VT16 pump is illustrated in cutaway in Fig. 5. The unit consists principally of a body, cover, ring, rotor, vanes, pressure plate, relief valve subassembly, drive shaft and reservoir. The vanes are contained in the rotor slots and follow the cam shaped contour of the ring as the rotor is driven in rotation by the driveshaft. Fluid flow is developed by the vanes carrying fluid around the ring contour.

Normally the pump does not require manual priming. It is essential, however, that after starting a minimum drive speed of 400 r.p.m. be maintained until the pump picks up its prime. Failure to observe this precaution can result in scoring and possible seizure of the pump due to a lack of oil for lubrication.

RESERVOIR

The integral flow control and relief valve limits the fluid flow to the system to a prescribed rate. Volume greater than the rated flow is by-passed to the pump inlet. The relief valve limits the maximum pressure in the circuit.

COVER

It is important that the hydraulic pump drive belt be maintained tight to prevent slipping to maintain maximum output of the pump. The pump bracket is provided with slotted holes by which the pump may be moved upward to tighten the drive belt.

1. Operation — — The pump depends on the engine as a source of rotary mechanical power to produce fluid flow. Inlet flow is created by a decreased pressure set up by the action of the pumping cartridge. Flow is directed through the cartridge to the pressure port and monitored by the flow control and relief valve.

436-10 The pump cartridge consists principally of a ring, rotor and vanes (Fig. 6). The rotor is driven within the ring by a drive shaft, coupled to the power source. Radial movement of the vanes, and the rotation of the rotor, cause the chamber area between vanes to increase in size at the inlet (large diameter) section of the ring.

This results in a low pressure, or vacuum in the chamber. This pressure differential forces oil to flow into the inlet chamber by atmospheric pressure. Oil is then trapped between the rotating vanes and is forced, through porting in the pressure plate, to the outlet and into the system as the chamber size decreases at the pressure quadrants (small diameter) section of the ring.

System pressure fed under vanes assures sealing contact of the vanes against the ring during normal operation.

Fig. 8C shows the condition when pressure in the system builds up to the relief valve setting. Pressure is transmitted through sensing orifices (G) and (H) and forces ball (4) from its seat. Fluid flow is then from chamber (B), through orifice (D), passage (E), orifices (G), (H) and (J) to passage (C) and to inlet. The pressure drop across restriction (D) resulting from this flow causes a differential pressure on the spool ends and the spool is shifted against the large spring, permitting .

Maximum fluid delivery and maximum system pressure are determined by the integral flow control and relief valve (Fig. 7). The rate of flow depends on the sizes of the restrication (D) in the cover. Excess oil is ported past the sliding spool (1) to the return circuit by way of passage (C).

When all pump delivery can pass through the restriction to the load, the spool is held in the closed position by the large spring (2) and passage (C) is blocked from chamber (B). This is the condition illustrated in Fig. 8A.

A second function of the valve subassembly and #2 is to hold the pressure plate against the pump cartridge until pressure builds up in chamber (B).

When pump delivery is greater than the flow rate determined by the restriction (P), a pressure build-up in chamber (B) forces the spool open against the large spring force. Excess fluid is throttled past the spool to passage (C) and back to inlet, (Fig. 8B).

c. Remove the pressure plate. Note the position of the pump ring for reassembly. Pull out the ring locating pins and remove the ring. Remove the vanes from the rotor slots and slide the rotor off the drive shaft. Remove the body "0" ring.

3. Shaft end — Remove the drive shaft key. Remove the bearing retaining snap ring and gently tap the splined end of the shaft to remove the shaft and the outboard bearing. Support the outboard bearing inner race in an arbor press and press out the shaft. Remove the inboard bearing from the shaft end of the body with a bearing puller or by tapping it out from the cover end.

B. INSPECTION, REPAIR and REPLACEMENT —

When a transmission malfunction is encountered, the following general procedure will aid in locating the failure.

1. Be certain the transmission is at proper operating temperature (180 0 -200°F.).

2. Check oil level; if low, bring level up to full mark and recheck operation of vehicle.

3. Check external linkage connections to the selector valve and inching control valve.

Change oil and filter whenever traces of dirt, metal particles, or effects of high operating temperatures are present as evidenced by discoloration or strong odors.

3. OIL LEVEL CHECKS Check daily when warm, preferably with engine idling at 1,000 R.P.M.

6. STALL CHECK a. Oil temperature 180°-200°F. at beginning of check. b. Run engine at high idle to determine if it will run at governed speed. c. Apply brakes. d. Shift transmission to forward. e. Open throttle fully. f . Read engine tachometer and check to see if reading corresponds to vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. g.

8. LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT Close attention should be made to periodically checking selector valve linkage adjustment to determine if the linkage is properly locating the selector valve in relation to its detent positions.

T12 TRANSMISSION SUGGESTED DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE With the transmission removed from the vehicle and placed in a suitable working area, proceed with disassembly as follows:

7. Remove idler gear and shaft in the following manner: a. Remove cap screws and lock washers retaining the idler cap to the housing and remove cap and shaft. Be sure to note the position of the pin holding the cap to the shaft to insure proper reinstallation. b. Remove idler gear through the valve block opening.

8. Remove output gear and shaft in the following manner.

1. Remove cap screws from valve body block and remove from transmission.

a. Remove cap screws and washers holding the output shaft seal and bearing retainer to the housing.

2. Mark oil pump and housing to insure proper mate up during reinstallation and remove cap screws holding pump and collector ring to converter housing.

b. Remove output shaft and cap by tapping lightly on the forward end while holding the output gear through the valve block opening.

3. Lay transmission on the gear case and remove cap screws holding converter housing to gear case. Lift off converter housing and disc drum assembly as a unit. Be careful not to damage the seal rings in the collector ring on the gear case.

9. Remove the filter screen by removing retaining cap screws inside the housing.

4. Remove the converter housing from the disc drum assembly by removing the snap ring on the turbine shaft and sliding the housing from the drum and shaft assembly .

1. DRUM AND DISC ASSEMBLY a. Place drum and disc assembly in an arbor press and apply pressure on the front end of the turbine shaft until the front cylinder member is depressed enough to allow removal of the large snap ring from the drum. b. Release press pressure and remove the front cylinder and turbine shaft assembly.

5. Remove the forward gear and forward 'shaft in the following manner: a. Remove cap screws and lock washers holding forward shaft bearing cap and remove cap. b. Remove snap ring on the forward side of the forward gear. c. Tap the forward shaft on the front end while holding the forward gear through the valve block opening and pull the shaft and bearing assembly rearward from the gear box.

6. Remove the reverse gear and shaft in the following manner: a. Remove snap ring on rear side of the reverse gear. b. Identify the collector ring with the gear case to insure proper reinstallation. c. Remove cap screws and lock washers that retain the collector ring and remove the collector ring from the housing. Remove seal rings if excessive wear is noted. d. Remove the reverse shaft and bearing assembly while holding the reverse gear through the valve block opening.

SUGGESTED DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE FOR COMPONENT ASSEMBLIES

c. Remove the piston, drive disc and springs. d. Turn the drum assembly over and remove the other large snap ring, cylinder, piston and drive disc.

2. OIL PUMP ASSEMBLY a. Remove cap screws holding pump to grounded stator support. b. Remove seal rings, shaft seal and bushing.

NOTE: Inspect pump body, pump gears, seals and bushing thoroughly for indications of severe wear and 'replace if necessary. Make sure during reassembly that pump parts are lubricated and that mating holes between the pump body and grounded stator support are aligned.

3. VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY a. Remove small ditch plate and gasket. b. Remove two cap screws at front of large plate and remove the plate and gasket.

REMOVAL AND REPAIR OF THE ROCKWELL PH312 DIFFERENTIAL The removal and repair of this differential should be made in a machine shop with adequate facilities to perform a major overhaul. The following general outline will aid in preparation for removal of the differential.

For additional reference refer to the repair parts section for various components.

1. Refer to Figures 12, 13 and 14A. Drain oil from the differential and the two chain drive cases. Remove hood, fuel tank and floor plate.

8. Remove the bottom gear (F), Fig. 28 from the drop box. Remove the six cap screws (Z) Fig. 28 holding the drop box to the differential.

9. Remove the 7 coupling housing bolts (J) Fig. 28 holding the housing to the T-98 transmission case, but before doing so, support the T-98 case to retain it in position because the drop box is actually the third support point for the engine and transmission unit.

10. Remove the 4 mounting bolts (C) Fig. 14A holding the drop box to the end frame.

NOTE: Do not lose shims between drop box ears and frame and note the number of shims on each side. When drop box is replaced, replace shims

with the noted amount on each side.

11. Remove the drop box with the use of a lifting device and shuffle the box free from the bottom of the differential shaft and at the top coupling housing from the transmission. Refer to Fig. 28, note that drive studs (R) slip from the drive plate (S).

The holes in the drive plate and driven plate are not symetrical. Look for match marks, one on the drive plate and the other on the driven plate. Line up match marks when units are reassembled.

As units are separated, they will have to be supported from below with blocking or some means of support to retain each unit in a horizontal position.

3. Disconnect hydraulic lines, two at the power steering pump and two from tubes thru ballast tank.

Also disconnect the choke control cable and ignition switch wires. Mark or tag hoses before disconnecting for correct identification for reassembly.

12. Remove side covers, each side, from the chain drive cases. Loosen chain, each side as much as possible, by means of removing the chain adjusting screws. Remove the castle nut, each side, holding the drive sprockets on the axle shafts.

13. Unbolt the rubber boot from the chain cases.

4. Separate and support each unit. Separate units far enough to provide for working clearance.

5. Remove 8 cap screws (B), 4 each side, holding the belly plate to the drive end frame.

6. Drain oil from the drop box by removing plug (A), Fig. 28.

7. Remove the bottom cover (Fig. 12) from the drop box. Disconnect the parking brake linkage at the clevis joint, opposite side of drop box.

14. Remove the two bottom caps from the chain case ends. This will allow the chain cases to drop and be moved outward. Differential may now be removed by unbolting two locking bars and lowering differential to the ground.

g. The differential and gear assembly must be removed before the pinion and cage assembly can be disassembled. h. Hold the pinion shaft from turning and remove the pinion shaft nut and washer. i . Remove pinion and cage assembly using puller screws in holes provided. (See Figure 18.)

f . Inspect the differential assembly for the following: Pitted, scored or worn thrust surfaces of differential case halves, thrust washers, spider trunnions and differential gears.

(Thrust washers must be used in sets. The use of a combination of old and new washers will result in premature failure.) Wear or damage to the differential gear teeth. Differential pinion bushings for wear or damage. Spider trunnions for looseness in differential case bores. g. Axle shafts for indications of torsional fractures.

a. Replace all worn or damaged parts. Hexagon nuts with rounded corners, all lock washers, oil seals and gaskets should be replaced at time of overhaul. Use genuine original type parts for

replacement service. Even non-standard gaskets can be troublesome because of variations in thickness and compressibility. Replace axle and final drive housing breathers as required. b. Remove nicks, burrs and mars from machined or ground surfaces. Threads must be clean and free to obtain accurate adjustment and correct torque. A fine mill file or india stone is suited for this purpose. Studs must be right prior to reassembly. c. When assembling component parts, use a press where necessary. Avoid hammering!

d. If new cups are to be installed, press firmly against pinion bearing cage shoulders. e. Lubricate bearings and cups with light machine oil. f. Press front bearing firmly against spacer. g. Rotate cage several revolutions to assure normal bearing contact. h. While in press at 25,000 lbs. pressure, check bearing preload torque. d. Tighten all nuts to specified torque. e. Use soft iron wire for safety wiring rather than brittle wire, where applicable.

8. Reassembly of Pinion, Differential Gear Assembly. a. When a new pinion cage is required, the bearing and cage assembly furnished for service purposes should be used. This includes the cage with bearing cups assembled, bearing cones and the selective spacer required to obtain the correct bearing preload. The used bearing cones should be removed from the pinion shaft and the new bearings and spacer used in the assembly. b. Press rear thrust and radial bearings firmly against the pinion shoulders with a suitable sleeve. c. Install radial bearing lock ring and squeeze ring into pinion shaft groove with pliers.

436-26 nut may be installed and tightened to specified torque for checking. If rotating torque is not within 12 to 18 inch pounds, use thinner spacer to increase or thicker spacer to decrease preload.

Example: Assuming pinion cage diameter to be 6", the radius would be 3" and with 5 lbs. pull would equal 15" pounds preload torque. i . Install pinion shaft washer and pinion shaft nut. . Place pinion and cage assembly over carrier studs, hold splined area of pinion shaft and tighten pinion shaft nut to specified torque. k. Recheck pinion bearing preload torque. If rotating torque is not within 12 to 18 inch pounds, repeat foregoing procedure.

1. Rivet bevel gear to case half with new rivets.

If a new gear or differential case is to be used in the assembly, the rivet holes in the gear and case should be checked for alignment and line reamed if necessary. The gear must be tight on the case. Pilot and rivet flush with the differential case flange. Check with a 0.002" feeler gauge. Rivets should not be heated, but should be upset cold. When the correct rivet and rivet set is used, the head being formed will be at least 1/8 " larger in diameter than the rivet hole.

The head will then be approximately the same height as the preformed head. The formed head should not exceed %," less than the preformed head as excessive pressure will cause distortion of the case holes and result in gear eccentricity. m. Lubricate differential case inner walls and all component parts with axle lubricant. n. Position thrust washer and side gear in ring gear and case half assembly. o. Place spider with pinion and thrust washers in position.

P. Install component side gear and thrust washer. q. Align mating marks, position component case

half and draw assembly together using four bolts equally spaced. r . Check assembly for free rotation of differential gears and correct if necessary. s. Install remaining bolts and tighten to specified torque and thread with lock wire. t. If bearings are to De replaced, press squarely and firmly on differential case halves.

On all geared drive units, the differential bearing preload and gear lash adjustments are obtained by use of hardened and ground spacers of the correct thickness installed between the differential bearing cups and the axle housing. a. Remove thrust block using drift to drive pin out of cover. b. Install differential bearing spacers in the original positions if new bearing cups are installed. c. Where a single chamfer is used on spacer, this chamfer must be installed toward the machined surface in housing. d. Insert pipe or shaft used for disassembly into differential assembly through case half. (See Figure 25.) e. Position differential and gear assembly with gear facing case half and slide into place. f . Install new gasket over case flange. g. Position cover half over pipe or shaft and draw axle housing halves together with six bolts equally spaced. h. Check differential and gear assembly end play with dial indicator through thrust block pin hole against gear. (See Figure 26.) Both the differential bearing preload and gear lash are controlled by selective spacers, available in increments of 0.003", which are installed between the differential bearing cups and the case and cover halves of the axle housing. Bearing preload may be increased or decreased by using a thiCker or thinner spacer respectfully in the

and move differential and gear out on support sufficient to permit installation of pinion and cage assembly. i . Install thrust block and pin.

10. Install pinion and cage assembly. a. Coat cage flange contact surface with nonhardening sealing compound. Position cage assembly over studs and tap into position with a soft mallet. Temporarily secure pinion carrier with 4 nuts and spacers.

cover half of the assembly. The gear may be moved toward the pinion, decreasing the gear lash, by decreasing the thickness of the spacer in the case half and increasing the thickness of the spacer by the same amount in the cover half. Reversing this transposition will move the gear away from the pinion and increase the gear lash. The correct preload of 0.008" to 0.013" tight is obtained as follows: Increase or decrease the thickness of the spacer used in the cover half to obtain a freely rotating gear with from 0.000" to 0.005" end play. Remove spacer in cover half and install a spacer 0.008" plus the end play thicker than the spacer used to obtain the adjustment in the above paragraph. If a new gear or case has been installed, check runout at back face of gear. Correct and recheck if runout exceeds 0.005".

b. Check gear lash with dial indicator on adapter fabricated to extend 2" from center line of pinion shaft. An indicator reading of between 0.013" and 0.033" will show the recommended backlash of between 0.006" and 0.012" is presfit in the gear set. Remove 4 nuts and spacers previously used to hold pinion carrier in position for gear lash check. Transpose spacers used in both the case and cover, decreasing the

thickness of the spacer used on the side in the direction which the gear is to be moved and increasing the thickness of the opposite spacer exactly the same amount as required to obtain the correct gear lash. c. Install differential and gear assembly and assemble cover, using new gasket with six bolts equally spaced. Tighten to specified torque. d. Install remaining bolts, washers and nuts in housing assembly and tighten all nuts in bolt circle to specified torque.

ENGINE STARTING INSTRUCTIONS: Before restarting the engine after one or more of the following conditions have occurred, follow the instructions listed below: CONDITIONS: 1. Changing fuel filter cartridge.

2. Running out of fuel while operating.

3. Replacing injector pump fuel lines.

4. Any other situation that would cause air to enter the fuel lines between the filter and injector nozzles.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BLEEDING OFF AIR: 1. Fill fuel tank.

2. Be sure fuel cock at bottom of fuel tank is open.

3. Open drain cock at point (A) in bottom of filter housing until fuel appears.

4. Bleed air filter housing by opening knurled screw at point (B).

5. Bleed air from injector pump at point (C) by opening Allen socket pipe plug Y2 to 1 turn until fuel appears. Open and close while cranking engine.

6. If engine does not start after following steps 1 — 5, it may be necessary to bleed air from injector nozzles. This is accomplished by opening all 4 nuts at points (D) one-half turn and closing while engine is cranking.

The connection between the drop box and the 4-speed transmission is comprised of a rubber bushed coupling made up of a drive and driven plate. In the event of repairs to the drop box or coupling material the following procedure may be followed:

T-98 TRANSMISSION The Model T-98 transmission is of synchromesh type having four speeds forward and one reverse. The fourth speed is direct drive.

Speed reductions in the T-98 transmissions are as follows: 1st - 6.398 to 1 2nd - 3.092 to 1 3rd - 1.686 to 1 4th - 1.000 to 1 Reverse - 7.820 to 1 The following disassembly story illustrates the proper procedure to follow when servicing the transmission. Except as noted, the reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. No special tools are required except for a pilot shaft which is used to facilitate assembly of the countershaft bearings. Details of this shaft are given in the following story.

The following sequence of disassembly will enable removal of main drive gear and mainshaft assemblies without disturbing the countershaft assembly.

Remove all dirt and grease from the transmission case, then disassemble as follows:

There are 22 rollers in each bearing set, totaling 88 bearings, separated by spacer washers sn&spacer sleeve. If these rollers should intermingle with the pilot bearing rollers during disassembly remember that the countershaft rollers are slightly smaller than the pilot bearing rollers. See figures 30 to 40 for reassembly.

LUBRICATION To provide for initial lubrication all roller bearings should be dipped in transmission lubricant before reassembling.

Fill the transmission through the oil level and filler hole until oil is level with the hole.

Use SCL, EP gear oil or a multi-purpose gear lubricant, supplied by a reputable refinery.

Viscosity of lubricant should be SAE-90 for atmospheric temperatures below 40 ° F. For temperatures above 40 ° F. use SAE-140.

Inspect every 1,000 miles and keep lubricant up to level of filler plug. Drain and flush twice each year or 10,000 mile's,. preferably in the spring and fall.

Lubricant capacity is 8 pints.

SEX DISASSEMBLY OF POWER TRAIN UNITS (T-98 CASE, T-12 CASE, CONVERTER AND ENGINE) (Refer to Figs. 12, 13 and 14A, Pages 21 & 22; and Fig. 28, Page 30.)

The complete power train can be removed from the unit using the following procedure as a guide. Work should be done in a machine shop having adequate tools and lifting facilities to perform a major overhaul.

The power train is supported in the machine at three points; one each side of engine and the third point being the coupling connecting the drop box with the T-12, 4-speed transmission. The drive end of the machine will have to be separated from the ballast tank.

1. Remove the engine housing or hood and floor plates.

2. Remove 18 cap screws (A) Fig. 13, 9 each side holding the ballast tank and drive end together. As the units are separated, they will have to be supported from below with blocking or some means of support to retain each unit in a horizontal position.

3. Disconnect hydraulic lines, two at the power steering pump and two from tubes thru ballast tank.

Mark or tag hoses for correct identification for reassembly. Disconnect choke control cable, ignition wires and gas line.

4. Separate units, supporting each as they are separated. Separate far enough to provide for working clearance.

5. Remove 8 cap screws (B) Fig. 12, four each side, holding belly plate to drive end frame.

6. Drain oil from the drop box.

7. (Fig. 28) Remove top and bottom side covers (B) and (C) from drop box and disconnect parking brake linkage at clevis (E).

NOTE: Before proceeding to remove the drop box from the machine, support the 4-speed transmission within the frame and block up the differential axle housing from below. This will retain the units from lowering when the drop box is removed.

8. (Fig. 28) Remove bottom gear (F) and top gear (G).

Gear (G) is held in place by snap ring (H).

9. Remove 7 cap screws (J) Fig. 28, holding coupling housing (K) to transmission adapter (L). Remove 6 cap screws (Z) holding lower end of drop box to the differential shaft housing.

10. Remove 4 mounting bolts (M) two from each side of drop box holding drop box to end frame.

NOTE: Do not lose shims (Y) between drop box ears and frame and note the number of shims on

436-41 each side. When replacing drop box, replace shims with the noted amount on each side.

11. With the use of a lifting device, slide and shuffle drop box free. Note that the drive studs (R) Fig. 28 slip from the drive plate (S). The holes in the drive plate and driven plate are not symetrical.

Look for match marks, one on the drive plate and one on the driven plate. Line up match marks when units are reassembled.

12. With the use of the lifting device and chain or cable, provide a sling around the transmission end. Use lifting eye on engine for other suspension point. Take up on chain or cable slack but do not tighten.

13. Remove engine mounting cradle bolts, one each side of engine after engine is suspended. Note any shims and amount of shims on each side.

Shims must be replaced in reassembly. Lift power train out of frame.

14. Proceed with repair of unit. Refer to pages covering either the T-12 or T-98 case or engine manual.
