OPERATOR’S MANUAL

GEHL AGRICULTURE NEW AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT WARRANTY GEHL AGRICULTURE DIVISION of the GEHL COMPANY, hereinafter referred to as Gehl, warrants new Gehl agricultural equipment to the Original Retail Purchaser to be free from defects in material and workmanship for the following periods: ALL AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT, SKID LOADERS, GEHLMAXt ARTICULATED LOADERS AND ATTACHMENTS, other than as set forth below, are warranted for a period of twelve (12) months from the Warranty Start Date.

ROUND BALERS and MOWER CONDITIONERS are warranted for a period of two (2) years from the Warranty Start Date.

The following parts are warranted for a period of ten (10) years from the Warranty Start Date for replacement only, labor and freight excluded, unless defect occurs during initial twelve (12) month warranty period: MANURE SPREADER sides on box spreaders or tank on Scavengerr spreaders against perforation (rust through) and Clad-Tuffr floor against delamination.

BU970 SELF-UNLOADING FORAGE BOX metal sides, end panels and roof against perforation (rust through) and platform against delamination.

GEHL AGRICULTURE WARRANTY SERVICE INCLUDES: Genuine Gehl parts and labor costs required to repair or replace equipment at the selling dealer’s business location.

GEHL MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED (INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR PARTICULAR PURPOSE), EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY STATED IN THIS WARRANTY STATEMENT.

GEHL WARRANTY SERVICE DOES NOT INCLUDE: Transportation to selling dealer’s business location or, at the option of the Original Retail Purchaser, the cost of a service call.

Used equipment.

Components covered by their own non-Gehl warranties, such as tires, trade accessories and engines.

4.

Normal maintenance service and expendable, high wear items.

5.

Repairs or adjustments caused by: improper use; failure to follow recommended maintenance procedures; use of unauthorized attachments; accident or other casualty.

6.

Liability for incidental or consequential damages of any type, including, but not limited to lost profits or expenses of acquiring replacement equipment.

No agent, employee or representative of Gehl has any authority to bind Gehl to any warranty except as specifically set forth herein. Any of these limitations excluded by local law shall be deemed deleted from this warranty; all other terms will continue to apply.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Your decision to purchase this piece of Gehl equipment was a good one. We are sure that your decision was strongly considered and that you are looking forward to many years of work from this machine.

We, as a Company, have invested a great deal of time and effort in developing our lines of equipment. The equipment you have purchased is built with a great deal of pride and designed to give you long life, efficient operation, durability and dependability.

This manual was developed specifically for the machine you have purchased. The information within is for your assistance in preparing, adjusting, maintaining and servicing your machine. More importantly, this manual provides an operating plan for safe and proper use of your machine. Major points of safe operation are detailed in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Refer to the Table of Contents for an outline (by chapters) of this manual. Use the Index, located at the back of this manual, for specific chapter and topic/page number references.

A Plastic Pouch is provided on the unit for storing the Operator’s Manual. After using the Manual, please return it to the Pouch and keep it with the unit at all times! Furthermore, if this machine is resold, Gehl Company recommends that this Manual be given to the new owner.

Modern machinery has become more sophisticated and, with that in mind, Gehl Company asks that you read and understand the contents of this manual COMPLETELY and become familiar with your new machine, BEFORE attempting to operate it.

’’Right’’ and ’’Left’’ are determined from a position standing behind the unit and facing the tractor. From this position, the Drawbar and Positioner would then be on the ’’Left’’ side.

PRE–DELIVERY After the Mower Conditioner has been completely set–up, the following inspections MUST be made before delivering it to the Customer. Check off each item after prescribed action is taken.

Hook the unit up to a 540 RPM tractor and test–run it while checking that proper operation is exhibited by all components.

Check that:

o The Rotating PTO Drive Line Shields turn freely.

Drive Chains, Belts and Mechanisms are operating o All smoothly and properly adjusted.

Reel and Conditioning Rollers turn freely and the o The Tines are NOT striking the Sickle or Conditioning Rollers.

CHAPTER 4

SAFETY The above Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! It stresses an attitude of ‘‘Heads Up for Safety’’ and can be found throughout this Operator’s Manual and on the machine itself.

BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS EQUIPMENT, READ AND STUDY THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INFORMATION. IN ADDITION, MAKE SURE THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO OPERATES OR WORKS WITH THIS EQUIPMENT, WHETHER FAMILY MEMBER OR EMPLOYEE, IS FAMILIAR WITH THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Our Company ALWAYS takes the operator and his/her safety into consideration when designing its machinery and guards exposed moving parts for his/her protection.

However, some areas can NOT be guarded or shielded in order to assure proper operation. In addition, this Operator’s Manual and Decals, on the machine, warn of further danger and should be read and observed closely.

DANGER ‘‘DANGER’’ indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING ‘‘WARNING’’ indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION ‘‘CAUTION’’ indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. May also alert against unsafe practices.

MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE BEFORE unclogging, cleaning, adjusting, lubricating or servicing the unit: 1.

Disengage the tractor PTO.

2.

Shut off the tractor engine, place the tractor transmission in park and/or lock brake pedals to prevent any tractor movement.

3.

Remove the starter switch key and take it with you when leaving the tractor seat.

4.

Wait for all movement to stop.

5.

Remove the Telescoping Drive and ALL Power connections from the tractor.

ONLY when you have taken these precautions can you be sure it is safe to proceed. Failure to follow the above procedure, could lead to death or serious bodily injury.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY REMINDERS Some photographs, used herein, may show Doors, Guards or Shields open or removed for illustration purposes ONLY! BE SURE that all Doors, Guards or Shields are in their proper positions and securely attached BEFORE operating this unit!

BE SURE the Hitchjack Locking Pin is completely engaged and that the machine is properly blocked and prevented from rolling BEFORE disconnecting the unit from the tractor!

ALWAYS wear Safety Glasses with Side Shields when striking metal against metal! In addition, it is recommended that a softer (non–chipable) material be used to cushion the blow. Failure to heed could result in serious injury to the eye(s) or other parts of the body!

NEVER use your hands to search for hydraulic fluid leaks; use a piece of cardboard. Escaping fluid under pressure can be invisible and can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury! If any fluid is injected into your skin, see a doctor at once! Injected fluid MUST BE surgically removed by a doctor familiar with this type of injury or gangrene may result.

SAFETY (Continued) ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding use of a safety chain and transport lighting when towing farm equipment on public highways! A safety chain should always be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machines, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system! BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations. Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow Moving Vehicle Emblem.

Only a Safety Chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machines, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system. Refer to Optional Features & Accessories chapter for Safety Chain.

Always use adequate lights or safety warnings when transporting machine on public roads and after dark.

Check with the local law enforcement agencies for specific requirements. Refer to Optional Features & Accessories chapter for Transport Lighting Kit. To ensure continued safe operation, replace damaged or worn–out parts with genuine GEHL service parts, BEFORE attempting to operate this equipment.

Our Company does NOT sell replacement tires. In addition, tire mounting, service or inflation can be dangerous. Whenever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires, following the tire manufacturer’s instruction. If you do NOT have such instructions, contact your tire dealer or our Company. In any event, to avoid possible fatal or serious injury, follow the specific directive given in the Service chapter of this manual.

DO NOT get near the unit until the Reel and Conditioner Rolls have stopped rotating! Both mechanisms and the Sickle can continue to operate after the PTO is disengaged!

DO NOT attempt to hand feed or kick any crop or material into this machine!

REMEMBER, it is the owner’s responsibility for communicating information on the safe use and proper maintenance of this machine.

Always lower Header to ground when parking.

Limit towing speed to 20 mph.

CHAPTER 5 CONTROLS & SAFETY EQUIPMENT The Mower Conditioner is provided with several features for operator safety and convenience.

CAUTION Become familiar with and know how to use ALL Safety Devices and Controls on the Mower Conditioner, BEFORE attempting to operate this equipment. Know how to STOP Mower Conditioner operation BEFORE starting it.

1 – Transport Lock

A Drawbar Hitch Positioning device MUST ALWAYS be securely installed between the Drawbar and Mower Conditioner Frame, BEFORE attempting to move the unit.

Repositioning the Mower Conditioner Drawbar (Tongue), between the ”Transport” and operating positions, can be accomplished in either of two ways; hydraulically or mechanically.

Hydraulic Hitch Positioner (Fig. 1) A Hydraulic Hitch Positioner is available for remotely (from the tractor seat) relocating the Drawbar from the ”Transport” to the field operation positions. The Hydraulic Hitch Positioner package contains a double–acting hydraulic Cylinder, Hoses and a Transport Lock.

Mechanical Hitch Positioner (Fig. 2) A Mechanical Positioner is available for remotely (from the tractor seat) relocating the Drawbar from the ’’Transport’’ to the field operation positions. The Mechanical Positioner package contains a Control Mechanism and a Control Rope.

CAUTION BEFORE transporting the Mower Conditioner on a public highway, BE SURE to install and lock the Positioner Cylinder, in the extended ”Transport” position, with the Transport Lock provided.

GUARDS & SHIELDS (Figs. 3 & 4) 1

Whenever and wherever possible and without affecting machine operation, Guards and Shields have been used, on this equipment, to protect potentially hazardous areas. In many places, Decals are also provided to warn of potential dangers as well as to display special operating procedures.

Read and observe ALL Warnings on the unit, BEFORE operating it. Do NOT attempt to operate this equipment unless ALL factory installed Guards and Shields are properly secured in place.

WARNING BE SURE that the Rotating Shields on the Telescoping Drives turn freely BEFORE starting the tractor engine.

Implement Drive Line Shields The Front Telescoping PTO Drive, between the PTO Tower and tractor PTO shaft, and the Rear Telescoping PTO Drive, between the PTO Tower and Gearbox, are equipped with rotating Shields.

Miscellaneous Guards Various latched and hinged Guards, Shields and Covers are provided on the Mower Conditioner to enable access for lubrication, service and adjustment.

BEFORE proceeding to perform any work on the Mower Conditioner and, BEFORE removing any Guards and opening any Covers and Shields, BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8). BE SURE also to replace ALL Guards, Shields and Covers BEFORE operating the unit.

HEADER LIFT SYSTEM (Fig. 5) The Mower Conditioner uses a remotely controlled (from the tractor seat) single–acting hydraulic Cylinder ’’master–slave’’ system, to raise and lower the Header.

Before transporting the unit, BE SURE to raise the unit as high as possible and activate the Transport Lock on both sides of the unit.

CAUTION BEFORE transporting the Mower Conditioner, raise the unit as high as possible and engage both Transport Locks.

ROLL REVERSING & GUARD STRAIGHTENING TOOL (Fig. 6) The Mower Conditioner is furnished with a special Tool for reversing the Conditioning Rolls to clear plug and, for straightening bent Sickle Guards, when required.

When NOT in use, the Roll Reversing & Guard Straightening Tool is stored inside the Frame Tube.

Access to the Tool is gained by locking open the large Right End Shield.

SAFETY CHAIN (Fig. 7) HITCHJACK (See Fig. 3) A Hitchjack is furnished with the Mower Conditioner to support the machine when the tractor is disconnected as well as to facilitate aligning the Hitch Clevis with the tractor drawbar for hookup. When the Jack is NOT being used to support the Mower Conditioner, it can be removed and relocated to a ”storage” position on top of the Drawbar.

WARNING BE SURE the Locking Pin is properly seated into the holes through the Jack Tube and the ”Supporting Position” Hub on the Drawbar, BEFORE disconnecting the Mower Conditioner from the tractor.

CAUTION ALWAYS follow state and local regulations, regarding a safety chain and transport lighting, when towing farm equipment on public highways! A safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should always be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machine, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations.

NEVER transport the Mower Conditioner at speeds greater than 20 mph. Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow–moving Vehicle Emblem.

As required or when desired, the Mower Conditioner should be equipped with a safety chain and transport lighting for transporting the unit on public highways. A sturdy Chain Loop is welded to the side of the Drawbar to facilitate anchoring the chain. Refer to the Optional Features & Accessories chapter for ordering information.

TRANSPORT LOCKS (See Figs. 1 & 5)

The Front Telescoping Drive is equipped with a Spring–loaded Locking Device to positively lock it onto the tractor PTO shaft. Depress the Locking Device against the Spring tension and slide the Yoke onto the tractor PTO shaft. Release the Locking Device and move the Yoke ahead or back until the Lock engages into the groove of the PTO shaft.

When the Mower Conditioner is going to be transported on a public highway, BE SURE to raise the unit all the way up and engage both Lift system Transport Locks.

For units with a Hydraulic Hitch Positioner, BE SURE also to swing the Drawbar to the Transport position and install the Transport Lock around the extended Positioner Cylinder Shaft.

CHAPTER 6 OPERATION

CAUTION BEFORE starting the tractor engine and running the Mower Conditioner for the first time, review and comply with ALL of the SAFETY recommendations set forth in the SAFETY chapter of this manual.

EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN In an emergency or in case a foreign object enters the Header area, STOP cutting material IMMEDIATELY by disengaging the tractor PTO. Then, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE leaving the tractor seat to remedy the problem.

START–UP

CAUTION BE SURE ALL factory installed Guards and Shields are properly secured in place BEFORE starting the tractor engine. Be certain that NO people are within 50 feet of the unit when engaging the PTO. To avoid unnecessary strain on the Mower Conditioner Drive Line components, ALWAYS engage the tractor PTO slowly with the tractor engine at half throttle. Bring the unit to 540 RPM, before starting to cut. Always operate at 540 RPM! Attempting to operate at higher than 540 RPM could cause excessive vibration, wear and early component failure. In addition, operating the unit at slower than 540 PTO RPM will cause poor windrow formation and increase chances of plugging.

STARTING THE FIELD NOTE: BEFORE proceeding to cut, raise and lower the Header a couple of times to insure that it is operating properly.

After the field has been checked and is known to be free of obstructions, it can be opened by cutting the first 18

swath in a counterclockwise direction. However, it is recommended to make two or three clockwise rounds first to expose any potential hazards around the edge of the field. Then, proceed to cut and condition the backswaths by operating in a counter–clockwise direction around the field. The field can then be divided into sections, as desired.

GROUND SPEED The Mower Conditioner can be operated at ground speeds in the range of 2 to 8 mph, depending on crop condition and/or terrain. Any change in ground speed should be made by changing tractor gears and NOT by increasing or decreasing the tractor engine RPM.

UNPLUGGING It is possible for the Mower Conditioner to plug in two different areas. It can become plugged in the Sickle Guards area leaving a skip (narrow band of standing crop) or, it can become plugged in the Conditioning Rolls causing the Banded V–Belt and Reel Drive Belt to slip.

Plugged Guards To clear a plugging condition in the area of the Sickle Guards: 7.

Stop forward travel but keep the PTO running at 540 RPM.

8.

If the plug contains a small amount of crop, continue to step 3. If the plug contains a large amount of material, stop the PTO and proceed to step 5.

NOTE:

It is very important to stop the PTO when there is a large plug in the Sickle Guards because the Reel may feed the plug into the Conditioning Rolls causing them to plug. Furthermore, it is much easier to clear a plug from the Guards than from the Conditioning Rolls.

9.

After stopping, back–up the unit (about a foot) with the Header down and the PTO running.

10.

If the Reel does NOT clear the plug, raise the Cutterbar away from the ground approximately 6 inches with the unit running.

11.

If the plug is still NOT cleared, perform the following steps: a.

shut off the PTO

b.

raise the Header all the way up

c.

engage both Header Transport Locks

d.

exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) and lock the tractor parking brake

e.

carefully clear plug from the Cutterbar area

If the plugging occurs frequently, refer to the Troubleshooting chapter for additional directives.

Plugged Conditioning Rolls (Figs.

9, 10 & 11) To clear plugging from the Conditioning Rolls, proceed as follows:

NOTE: If either the Conditioner Drive Banded V–Belt or the Reel Drive Belt starts to slip, stop forward travel and disengage the PTO IMMEDIATELY! Furthermore, the Reel can continue to rotate with the Conditioner Roll Drive Belt slipping. When the Conditioner Roll Drive Belt is slipping, the Sickle Drive will also be stopped. Observe the Sickle Drive, to determine if the Conditioner Rolls have stopped rotating.

1.

Stop forward movement of the tractor and disengage the PTO.

2.

Raise unit up fully and back up unit about 2 feet.

3.

Shut off the tractor engine and lock the brakes and exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

4.

Engage both Mower Conditioner Transport Locks.

5.

Clean off area on the Cutterbar and under the Reel.

6.

Open the right End Shield and lock it open using the Rod as shown.

7.

Remove the Roll Reversing & Guard Straightening Tool from the Cross Header Storage Tube. Using the Tool, rotate the Rolls, either forward or backwards, to clear the plug.

CHAPTER 7 ADJUSTMENTS

CAUTION BEFORE proceeding to perform any adjustments on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

conditions, the flotation should be set with enough force to just lift each end of the Header off the ground. In rocky or rough conditions, the flotation should be set lighter to protect the Guards and Sickle. At higher mowing speeds, heavier settings follow terrain better.

The MC2175 Mower Conditioner has been designed and factory adjusted to function properly under most field operating conditions. However, due to the wide range of operating conditions encountered, some additional readjustments may be required.

CUTTING HEIGHT (Fig. 12) The cutting height (stubble height) can be adjusted from 1 to 6” (25 to 152mm), using the Skid Shoes, located on each end of the Cutterbar. BEFORE proceeding to adjust the cutting height, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8). The Skid Shoes can be raised or lowered, using the Adjustment Pin shown. BE SURE to operate the unit with both Skid Shoes in the same position. The 1” cutting height can only be obtained with a 12 degree Guard angle.

NOTE: Any change to the cutting height requires that the flotation be checked and readjusted, as necessary. In addition, any change to the Guard angle will also affect the cutting height.

HEADER FLOTATION (Figs. 13 & 14)

NOTE:

Any change of cutting height, Guard angle or Drawbar height will change the Header flotation. BE SURE to readjust the flotation, if necessary, to avoid damaging the Guards or Sickle.

Also, when making a flotation adjustment to the left side of the Header, BE SURE to adjust both Springs evenly, to avoid damaging the U–bolt Anchor on the bottom end of the Springs.

GUARD ANGLE (Fig. 15)

BE SURE to place the Header in the operating position before proceeding to adjust the flotation. In addition, when operating the Mower Conditioner with a high PTO horsepower tractor, the flotation may have to be set heavier to counteract the higher rotational torque’s tendency to lift the Header off the ground.

The Guard angle is infinitely adjustable from 6° down to 12° down. In rocky or rough conditions, use a flatter or 6° Guard angle to protect the Guards and Sickle. In down, tangled and lodged crops, use a steeper or 12° Guard angle to obtain a clean cut. Exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8), BEFORE proceeding to adjust the Guard angle.

The Header flotation can be adjusted, using the Flotation Springs on each end of the Header. With the Header in the operating position, adjust the flotation by loosening the Jam Nuts and tightening or loosening the Spring Bolts to achieve the desired flotation. For normal

To change the Guard angle, it is necessary to move the rear pivot of the third Link forward (12 degrees) or backward (6 degrees). To adjust the Guard angle, loosen the Crossbolt and use the Adjustment Nuts to make the desired change.

REEL SPEED (Figs. 16 & 17) The Reel can be operated at five different peripheral (tip) speeds, ranging from 6.3 to 8.7 mph. Normally, the Reel peripheral speed should be about 25% faster than the ground speed. For down and tangled crop, a more even stubble height can be obtained by a higher Reel to ground speed ratio. Exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8), BEFORE proceeding to adjust the Reel speed.

The Reel speed is changed by adjusting the Variable Speed Sheave, as shown. The Reel speed can be increased by removing Shims from between the Variable Speed Sheave halves and decreased by adding Shims between the Sheave halves. Extra Shims are stored on the outside of the Variable Speed Sheave. To add or remove Shims, perform the following: 1.

Derail the Reel Drive Belt from the large diameter Sheave on the Reel Shaft.

2.

Loosen (but do NOT remove) all (4) Bolts in the Speed Sheave. Then, remove the Bolt that is on the head of the arrow–shaped Shim.

NOTE: It is NOT necessary to remove the other bolts NOR the outer Sheave half, in order to remove the Shims.

The Shims will now slide in and out as shown.

After making the Reel speed change, check the Reel Drive Belt tension following details under the appropriate topic in the Service chapter of this manual.

The Release point can be moved toward the Riser Pan (early release) or toward the Conditioner Rolls (late release), by rotating the Cam Track. For best results, the Release point should be 2” above the Riser Pan. To rotate the Cam Track, it is necessary to loosen (but NOT remove) the (3) Nuts on the inside of the Cam Track. It may also be necessary to raise or lower the Cam end of the Reel, after rotating the Cam. This can be done, following details under the next ”Reel Location” topic.

REEL RELEASE LOCATION (Fig.18)

REEL LOCATION (Figs. 19, 20 & 21 & see Fig. 16)

The Reel Release Location is the point at which the Reel releases the crop to the Conditioner Rolls. The Reel Tines will point to the Release Location, as they move past the Conditioner Rolls as shown.

The Reel Location is very important to the proper function of the Mower Conditioner. It is very important that the Reel Tines operate as close as possible to the Guards and the Riser Pan, without touching them. This

Reel Location will insure a smooth flow of crop to the Conditioner Rolls. The only time Reel Location should be changed is for conditioning tall and heavy crops.

In down and tangled crops, the Reel will become more aggressive by adjusting the Guard angle to 12 degrees. Conversely, the Reel is less aggressive with a 6 degree Guard angle. Do NOT move the Reel forward and downward as this will allow the crop to build–up on the Riser Pan, causing possible plugging problems and bunchy windrows.

To change the Reel Location, it is necessary to loosen (but NOT remove) the (3) nuts on the inside of the Cam Track and on the inside of the Mounting Plate on the right end of the Header. The Reel can be raised or lowered, using the two Adjustment Bolts shown. After changing the Reel Location, BE SURE the Reel is parallel to the Cutterbar and Conditioner Rolls and, that the Tines do NOT touch the Guards or Riser Pan. The Reel Tines should be located 3/32″ (2.4mm) from both the Guards and Riser Pan, as shown.

The Pushbar can be positioned at five different heights.

There is a Plate at each end of the Pushbar that can be move up the Header Frame End Panels. This allows the Pushbar to be positioned above the End Panels for very tall crop conditions. For normal crop height, position the Pushbar in the top two holes of the Header End Panels.

NOTE: Changing the Guard angle or cutting height changes the height of the Pushbar. NEVER attempt to cut with the Pushbar removed as this is an important structural member of the Header and, it protects the Reel.

PUSHBAR ADJUSTMENT (Fig. 21) The function of the Pushbar is to bend tall crop forward, for butt–first feeding into the Conditioner Rolls. This function of the Pushbar is important to help keep the Conditioner from grabbing uncut crop.

CONDITIONER ROLL PRESSURE (See Figs. 24 & 25) The Conditioner Roll pressure determines the amount of conditioning done to the crop (assuming the Roll gap is properly adjusted) and should be used accordingly.

For crops like alfalfa and clover (legumes), use only enough Roll pressure to crack and kink the stems. If the leaves show dark spots and/or the tops of the plants are being clipped off, too much Roll pressure is being used.

In grass–type crops, more Roll pressure is required than for legume–type crops.

NOTE: If the Conditioner Rolls are separated too far, there is NO amount of Roll pressure that will do a satisfactory job, in most crop conditions.

To adjust the Roll pressure, it is necessary to loosen (but NOT remove) the Jam Nut and tighten or loosen the Spring Bolt, as desired. BE SURE to adjust both Roll Springs (one on each End Panel) the same amount. To speed–up this operation, the Plugs can be removed to accommodate the use of a socket wrench. BE SURE to replace the Plugs after adjustment.

NOTE: Do NOT reduce the Roll pressure to the point where there is NO Spring force on the Rolls.

Damage can occur to the Roll Drive Chain, if the Roll pressure is too low, allowing the Rolls to open and close continuously. For operation at low Roll pressures (10 lb/in), completely collapse each Spring and then, extend each Spring 1” (25mm). If the Roll pressure is still too high, increase the gap between the Rolls.

CONDITIONER ROLL GAP (See Figs. 22, 23 & 24) The Conditioner Roll gap is the distance between the top of the lug on one Roll and the root of the lug of the mating Roll. The Roll gap should be set from 1/16 to 1/8” (1.6 to 3.2mm), for most crops. However, it may be desirable to increase the Roll gap, when cutting thick–stemmed cane–type crops.

NOTE: Always check the Roll gap at several points along the entire length of the Rolls. The gap must always be maintained at a minimum of 1/16” (1.6mm). Operating at closer than this minimum gap or with Rolls touching will result in damage to the Conditioner Rolls, Bearings and Frame.

The Conditioner Roll gap can be changed by adjusting the Stop Bolt at each end of the Header. First, loosen the Locking Jam Nuts. Turning the Stop Bolt into the Roll Arm will open the Rolls and increase the gap. Turning the Stop Bolt away from the Roll Arm will close the Rolls and decrease the gap. BE SURE to adjust the gap an equal amount to both ends of the Header, to keep the Top Conditioner Roll parallel to the Lower Conditioner Roll. MAKE SURE to re–tighten the Locking Jam Nuts after the desired gap has been set.

NOTE: If the Conditioner Rolls are separated too far, there is NO amount of Roll pressure that will do a satisfactory job of conditioning, in most crops.

narrow windrow to a wide swath, by moving the Fluffer up or down. Raise the Fluffer for a narrow windrow and lower the Fluffer for a wide swath. The Fluffer can be adjusted, using the Fluffer Adjustment Handle, as shown. The maximum swath width achievable is 89″ (2260) for the MC2175. Factory windrow width setting will produce a windrow approximately 2′ (610mm). It may be necessary to remove the Windrow Directors to produce a windrow 4′ (1220mm) wide.

The Compression Spring, on the Bandbelt Idler, should be set at a 4–1/4″ (108mm) overall length. the Spring– loaded Idler has been designed to protect the Driveline.

Overtightening the Idler will decrease this protection.

The Spring should NEVER be tightened to less than 3–3/4″ (95mm).

CHAPTER 8 LUBRICATION

CAUTION NEVER attempt to lubricate the machine when any part of the unit is in motion. ALWAYS, BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8), BEFORE proceeding to lubricate the machine.

It is well to remember that a sufficient amount of oil or grease will prevent excessive part wear and early failure.

GEARBOX NOTE:

On a routine basis after every 200 hours of operation, check the fluid level in the Mower Conditioner Gearbox. The level should be maintained with a sufficient amount of EP 90 Gear Lube so that it just starts to run out the Fill Plug opening in the back of the Gearbox.

The Gearbox should be checked occasionally for oil drips and dust accumulation around the Seals. Oil drips or dust accumulation indicate that Seals are leaking. Oil which is tan in color and foams excessively indicates that it has water present. Unless rust spots appear inside the Gearbox, the fluid does NOT require replacement.

NOTE:

Do NOT overfill the Gearbox; only fill to the centerline of the Cross Shaft.

OILING Lubricate all Roller Chains every 6 to 8 hours of operation using a good grade of foaming aerosol lubricant, such as NAPA Chain and Cable Lubricant.

This type of lubricant increases the life of the Chain 3 to 4 times over those lubricated at 8 hour intervals with new or used motor oil. The recommended method is to spray the entire length of Chain on the center of the Rollers. It is better to lubricate Chains when they are warm (after use, rather than before). An optional Chain Oiler Kit is available. See Optional Features & Accessories chapter for details.

In addition to the Roller Chains, apply oil or foaming aerosol lubricant to the Front and Rear Telescoping PTO Drive Shields.

NOTE: At the end of the harvesting season, coat all of the Roller Chains with oil before placing the Mower Conditioner into storage.

SEALED BEARINGS Sealed Bearings are used throughout the machine to provide trouble–free operation, with a minimum of maintenance and lubrication. These Sealed Bearings are lubricated for life and relubrication is NOT required, NOR should it be attempted.

GREASING NOTE: Grease all fittings on a prescribed basis, at the intervals of operation listed, before and after storing the unit and as otherwise listed. Use a good grade of lithium base grease.

Wipe dirt from the fittings before greasing to prevent any dirt from being forced into the Bearings or pivots.

Replace any missing fittings, when noted. To minimize dirt build–up, avoid excessive greasing.

NOTE:

In addition to the fittings, inspect and repack the Wheel Bearings at least once a season.

The Telescoping PTO Drive should also be separated and grease applied to the splines at least three times during the harvesting season.

Mate the cam, of the Lock Collar, with the cam, of the Bearing inner ring.

Press the Locking Collar against the Bearing wide inner ring and turn it, in the direction of Shaft rotation until it tightly engages. Tighten the Collar further, by tapping on a punch inserted in the drift pin hole.

CAUTION BEFORE proceeding to perform all Service routines on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

NOTE:

The following information is also referred to in the Troubleshooting chapter of this manual. It should be understood that all services, detailed in this chapter, are Owner-Operator responsibilities. Where indicated, certain service routines should only be carried-out by (or under the direction of) an authorized GEHL equipment dealer.

SEALED BALL BEARING REPLACEMENT (Fig. 26) Sealed Ball Bearings are used on various Shafts, around the unit. This type of Bearing is generally retained, in place, with a Self-locking Eccentric Collar. The Lock Collar has a counter bored recess, which is eccentric with the Collar bore. This eccentric recess engages or mates with an eccentric end of the Bearing inner ring, when the Bearing is assembled on the Shaft. The Bearing is engaged, on the inner ring cam, by the Collar.

This assembly grips the Shaft tightly with a positive binding action that increases with use. The Collar Set Screw provides supplementary locking.

A Bearing can be removed from the Shaft by loosening the Set Screw and tapping on a punch which is placed in the drift pin hole, to loosen the Collar. Install Bearings with self-locking Collars in the following manner: 1.

Place the Bearing and Collar on the Shaft with the cam surfaces next to each other. Tighten the bolts on the Bearing Retainers.

NOTE: Avoid damaging the Collar by overtightening it.

Last, tighten the Set Screw in the Locking Collar.

CUTTERBAR (Fig. 27)

WARNING BE CAREFUL when working around the Sickle. Wear heavy gloves to protect your hands and fingers. The majority of Mower Conditioner problems are caused by a lack of proper maintenance to the Cutterbar. The Cutterbar consists of two cutting surfaces, the Sickle Section and the ledger area of the Guard. For a clean, smooth cut, the Sickle Sections MUST operate very close to the ledger surface of the Guard.

NOTE: Regular washing of the Cutterbar area with water under pressure will improve performance and facilitate maintenance work.

Sickle & Sickle Sections (Fig. 27 & 28) For proper operation, The Sickle MUST be straight and without any twist. Also, the Sickle Sections should be firmly bolted to the Sickle strap. Worn or broken Sickle Sections should be replaced.

WARNING ALWAYS WEAR PROPER EYE PROTECTION, when working on Sickles and Sickle Sections.

ALWAYS handle Sickles and Sickle Sections with caution to prevent injury or amputation.

NOTE:

Top–serrated Sickle Sections are NOT designed for NOR intended to be sharpened. The top–serrated Sections, with serrations parallel to the Sickle strap, are sharpened by normal wear.

To remove the Sickle, remove the two bolts from the bottom Socket Bearing and pull out the Sickle. It will be difficult to remove the Sickle, if the Guards are badly bent or there is gum build–up on the Sickle. Straighten the Guards and wash off the Sickle with pressurized water, to aid in Sickle removal.

When installing a Sickle, torque the Socket Bearing bolts from 80 to 90 ft–lb (108 to 122 Nm).

NOTE: Check Sickle register after installing different Sickle, new Sickle head or new Socket Bearing.

Sickle Register (Fig. 28) The Sickle is properly registered, when the center of the Section is positioned at the center of the Guard point, at each end of the stroke. Always check the Sickle register, at both ends of the stroke, and in the center of the Cutterbar. To adjust the Sickle register, use the following steps in the sequence given: 1.

Position the Sickle in the center of its stroke (the edges of the Sickle Section should be aligned with the centerline of the Guard bolts).

2.

Adjust the bottom Socket Bearing such that the inside edge of the Wobble Arm is parallel to the End Panel, when the Sickle is in the center of its stroke.

3.

Adjust the top Socket Bearing such that the Sickle Section centerline is positioned at the centerline of the Guard point, at each end of the stroke.

4.

Torque the bolts, in each Socket Bearing, from 80 to 90 ft–lb.

The Guard alignment is critical to insure a good shearing action, between the Sickle Sections and Guards, and to allow free movement of the Sickle through the Guards. When aligning or replacing Guards, BE SURE that: 1.

The Guard tips are aligned.

2.

The Guards are parallel to each other and to the Cutterbar (NOT cocked).

NOTE: Excessive Sickle drag can be caused by Sickle binding, due to the Guard tips NOT being aligned or the Guard being cocked. This drag can cause Sickle breakage, increased load on Bearings and Drive components and, excessive vibration.

When tightening Guard bolts, make sure that the Guards are parallel with the Cutterbar and each other. Tighten the Guard bolt on your right side first, while pushing the Guard rearward.

The Guard points can be aligned using the Roll Reversing & Guard Straightening Tool supplied. The Tool can be used to either bend the Guard points up or down. The Tool is stored in the Frame Channel with access gained by opening the right End Shield.

required. BE SURE to pack the Bearings, with grease, before reassembling.

Wobble Arm Replacement (Figs. 31 & 32 & see Fig. 28) To remove the Wobble Arm, use the following steps: 1.

Remove the left Rock Guard.

2.

Remove the Socket Bearing retaining bolts from both the top and bottom Socket Bearings.

3.

Remove the Pivot Pin Nut and Pivot Pin.

The Hold–down Clips keep the Sickle Sections down on the Guards, for a clean shearing action. The Hold–down Clips should be set with a maximum gap of 1/32”, between the Sickle Sections and the Hold–down Clips, with the Sickle Sections down on the Guards. The Hold–down Clips should NOT be so tight as to restrict free movement of the Sickle.

4.

Remove the Wobble Arm.

The Hold–down Clips are made of stamped steel and can be adjusted downward, by striking the top with a lead–headed hammer. Do NOT adjust a Hold–down Clip with a Sickle Section under it. Oil the Hold–down Clips, after they have been adjusted.

SICKLE DRIVE Socket Bearing Replacement (See Fig. 31) When the top or bottom Socket Bearing is replaced, it will be necessary to check the Sickle register. The two Socket Bearing retaining bolts should be torqued from 80 to 90 ft–lb.

NOTE: BE SURE the Socket Bearing Clamps lineup with the slots of the piece they are clamping.

Wobble Arm Pivot Bearing Replacement (Fig. 31) Loose or worn out Wobble Arm Pivot Bearings can cause noise and excessive vibration. A loose Bearing should be tightened and worn out Bearing replaced, before they cause damage to the other Sickle Drive components. Check Pivot Bearing tightness, before replacing the Bearings. The nut on the Pivot Pin should be torqued to 100 ft–lb, for proper Bearing tightness.

To replace the Wobble Arm Bearings, it is necessary to remove the Wobble Arm. After the Wobble Arm has been removed, replace the Bearings and races, as

To install a new Wobble Arm, use the following steps:

1.

Remove the Screws and hardware and pull the Bearing Retainer and Pitman Arm away from the Bearing Assembly.

2.

Remove the Bearing Assembly Retainer Bolt and Washers.

3.

Remove the Eccentric Lock Collar (rotate counterclockwise) and remove the Bearing Assembly.

NOTE:

To reinstall the original Wobble Arm, use steps 6, 10 & 12.

5.

Remove and save all Wobble Arm Pivot Shims, located above and below the Wobble Arm.

6.

After packing the Pivot Bearing with grease, install the Wobble Arm and Bearing into the proper position and insert the Pivot Pin; BE SURE there is one Washer (PN 360–14855) backing both the top and bottom tapered Roller Bearings.

To install the new Bearing, use the following steps: 4.

Place the Bearing Assembly on the Pitman Pulley.

7.

Hand–tighten the Pivot Pin Nut.

5.

8.

Install and hand–tighten the retaining bolts in the bottom Socket Bearing.

9.

Use the Wobble Arm Pivot Shims to raise and lower the Wobble Arm, such that the Sickle Sections run from 0 to 1/32 (0.030)” above the first Guard, on the left end. Add as many Shims as possible, above and below the Wobble Arm, to fill the gap.

Install and lock the Bearing onto the Pitman Pulley, by rotating the Lock Collar clockwise.

Make sure that the Bearing Assembly is parallel to the surface of the Pitman Pulley and the end of the Lock Collar is flush with the end of the Stub Shaft.

6.

Replace the Bearing Retainer Bolt and Washers.

7.

Install Pitman Arm with Tube angled away from Frame and Bearing Retainer to Bearing Assembly making sure that Bearing Housing is positioned per Figure 33 (flat side toward Wobble Arm).

Install retaining hardware and torque to 30 ft lb (41 Nm).

Torque the Pivot Pin Nut to 130 ft–lb, to seat the Bearing races. Then, back the Nut off. Re–torque the Nut to 100 ft–lb and install the cotter pin to lock the Nut. Use the Socket Bearing Shims to position the Sickle strap in the Sickle strap opening of the left Guard such that: a.

The Sickle strap touches the back of the Sickle strap opening, in the center of the stroke, and,

b.

The Sickle strap touches the front of the Sickle strap opening, at the ends of the stroke. Use only enough Shims to fill the opening.

12.

Adjust the Sickle register, as described under the Cutter bar topic.

13.

Tack–weld the Socket Bearing Shims to the Wobble Arm so they will NOT fall out, when the Sickle is removed.

NOTE:

If the Wobble Arm Pivot Bushings in the Header Frame shows signs of wear, contact your Gehl Dealer for Bushing replacement information.

Pitman Bearing Replacement (Fig. 33 & see Fig. 27) To remove the Pitman Bearing on the Pitman Pulley, use the following steps: 32

Pitman Arm Replacement To replace the Pitman Arm, follow the steps listed under the Pitman Bearing Replacement topic, with the exception of removing and installing the Bearing. After completing the Arm replacement procedure, check the Sickle register, as described under the Cutterbar topic.

NOTE:

CONDITIONER ROLLS Conditioner Roll Timing (Figs. 34, 35 & 36) The Conditioner Rolls are properly timed when the lug of one Roll is centered in the groove of the mating Roll.

BE SURE the Roll Drive Chain is properly tensioned, before adjusting or checking the Roll timing.

To time the Conditioner Rolls, loosen the bolts on the Timing Sprocket. The Timing Sprocket can have either a 9 or 12 bolt pattern. Go behind the Conditioner Rolls and center the lug of one Roll in the groove of the mating Roll. Torque the screws on the Timing Sprocket to half–torque (15 ft–lb) using a cross–point star sequence pattern (see Figure 35). Finish torquing bolts to full torque setting (30 ft–lb) using the above star pattern.

Again, check the timing as the Rolls are rotated by hand.

When Conditioner Rolls are realigned, the top Roll Chain Drive alignment and Roll timing MUST be checked.

Roll Alignment (Fig. 34) The Upper Conditioner Roll is properly positioned in the Frame when the Sprocket on the top Roll Shaft is locked in place. The position of the top Roll is non–adjustable. The lower Roll is to be centered in the Header Frame (NOT aligned with the ends of the top Roll). Move the lower Roll left or right by loosening the Bearing Lock Collars and shifting the Roll until centered in the Frame. MAKE SURE to lock Bearing Lock Collars after Roll is properly positioned.

Conditioner Roll Drive Chain Tension (Fig. 34) The Conditioner Roll Drive Chain tension is maintained by a spring loaded Idler. The Spring should be set to a compressed height of 1–3/4″ (44mm).

BANDED V–BELT (MAIN DRIVE BELT) (Figs. 37 & 38) The Banded V–Belt on the Mower Conditioner is used to drive the Conditioner Rolls and Sickle. It is also an overload protection for the Conditioner Rolls and Sickle.

Banded V–Belt Tension (Figs. 37 & 38) The Compression Spring, on the Banded V–Belt Idler, should be set at a 4–1/4” (108mm) overall length. The Spring–loaded Idler has been designed to protect the Driveline; overtightening the Idler will decrease this protection. The Spring should NEVER be tightened to less than 3–3/4” (95mm).

Banded V–Belt Alignment & Location (Figs. 37 & 38) The Banded V–Belt should be aligned and located in the following manner: 1.

The two Banded V–Belt Sheaves should be aligned with each other within 0.030″ (.76mm).

2.

The two Shafts, which the Banded V–Belt Sheaves are mounted to, should be parallel to each other within 0.015″ (.38mm), over a span of 4″ (102mm).

3.

The Banded V–Belt should be located such that the centerline of the inside groove is located 5–15/16″ (151mm) out from the End Panel.

Install the two retaining bolts, for the Pitman Arm Socket Bearing, and torque from 80 to 90 ft–lb.

The Banded V–Belt should be parallel to the two Banded V–Belt Sheaves, to place equal tension on each Band. The Idler position can be adjusted by loosening the Idler Pivot Bolt and making required readjustment.

DRIVE SHEAVE (Fig. 38) The Drive Sheave, on the Output Shaft of the Gearbox, can be removed in the following manner: 1.

Loosen and remove the cap screw.

2.

Insert cap screws in the tapped Removal Holes of the Bushing Head.

3.

Banded V–Belt Replacement (Figs.

37 & 38)

Tighten the inserted screws, until the Pulley is loose on the Shaft.

4.

Remove the Pulley from the Shaft.

To remove the Banded V–Belt, use the following steps:

To replace the Pulley or install a new one, proceed as follows:

1.

Remove the two retaining bolts from the top Socket Bearing.

5.

Make sure the tapered cone surfaces of the Bushing and the inside of the Pulley hub are clean.

2.

Remove the Gearbox, following instructions under the Gearbox topic in this chapter. Then, remove the Banded V–Belt.

6.

Place the Bushing in the Pulley.

7.

Place cap screws and lock washers loosely into the pull–up holes. Bushing remains fully expanded to assure sliding fit on Shaft.

8.

With Key on Shaft, slide Pulley to the desired position on the Shaft.

9.

Align the Pulley. Tighten the screws alternately and progressively, until all are torqued to 15 ft–lb.

Do NOT allow the Pulley to be drawn into contact with the flange of the Bushing; there should be a gap of 1/8 to 1/4″ (3 to 6mm).

To install a new Banded V–Belt: 3.

Slip the new Banded V–Belt over the Pitman Arm and onto the Pitman Pulley.

4.

Place the Banded V–Belt over the Drive Sheave, on the Gearbox Output Shaft.

Replace the Gearbox, following details under the Gearbox topic in this chapter.

PITMAN PULLEY REMOVAL (Figs.

38 & 39) To remove the Pitman Pulley from the lower Conditioner Roll Shaft, use the following steps: 1.

Straighten tabs on Bolt Lock Ring. Then, loosen the six locking bolts on the inside of the Pitman Pulley. Loosen the bolts in two stages, using the sequence illustrated.

2.

The Pulley should now be free to slide on the Shaft. It may be necessary to rap the Pulley to loosen the locking element.

PITMAN PULLEY INSTALLATION (Figs. 38 & 39)

4.

Clean and oil (with common engine oil) the components shown in the drawing. Do NOT use grease.

5.

Slide all of the components shown onto the lower Roll Shaft. The slits, in the individual locking elements, should be 180 degrees apart, in each set.

The contact angles, between the individual locking elements, should be the same for both sets as shown.

6.

Slide the Pitman Pulley over the components, on the Shaft, without rotating the Pulley.

7.

Hand–tighten the six locking bolts, until all slack is removed between the various components.

8.

Slide the Pulley in or out to line–up with the Banded V–Belt Drive Sheave (see Banded V–Belt Alignment & Location topic).

9.

Torque the locking bolts to 15 ft–lb, using the sequence shown.

To replace the Pitman Pulley or install a new one onto the Conditioner Roll Shaft, proceed as follows: 3.

If the Pulley was just moved on the Shaft, skip to step 10.

Now, torque the locking bolts to 30 ft–lb, using the sequence shown.

Bend up the tabs of the Bolt Lock Ring, to lock the Bolt positions.

NOTE:

BE SURE the flange does NOT touch the Pitman Pulley, after tightening the locking bolts.

The Gearbox will now drop down, when the four Gear box bolts are removed. There are Shims, located between the Gearbox and the Gearbox Mount; note the position and quantity, for future reassembly.

Removal from Mower Conditioner To remove the Gearbox, use the following steps: 1.

Remove the rear PTO assembly from the Gearbox Input Shaft.

2.

Disconnect the Banded V–Belt Idler Tension Rod from the Idler.

3.

Remove the Reel Drive Chain Idler.

4.

Remove the three mounting bolts from the Bearing, on the end of the Gearbox Output Shaft.

Start the four Gearbox bolts into the Gearbox Housing.

Insert the Gearbox Shims into their original location. The Gearbox Output Shaft should be parallel to the lower Conditioner Roll Shaft, within 0.015” (.38mm), over a span of 4” (102mm).

Tightly secure the four Gearbox bolts.

Install the bolts for the Outboard Bearing onto the Output Shaft of the Gearbox. Do NOT force these bolts and thus place side load on the Gearbox Shaft which could result in early Shaft failure. If the bolts, for the Outboard Bearing, do NOT line– up, use the Shims, between the Gearbox and Gearbox Mount, to obtain the proper Output Shaft position.

Install the Reel Drive Chain and Idler, making sure that the Chain is properly aligned.

Reassemble the other loose items to complete the replacement procedure.

REEL DRIVE Drive Chain Tension (Fig. 40) The Reel Drive Chain tension can be adjusted by loosening the Pivot Bolt, in the Reel Drive Chain Idler, and raising or lowering the Idler, as required. The Chain should have 1/4” of total slack movement, in the bottom strand.

Drive Belt Tension (Figs. 40, 41 & see Fig. 38) The Reel Drive Belt tension can be adjusted using the Threaded Rod. The Spring should be extended to an overall length of 8–3/4” (222mm).

NOTE: The Reel Drive Belt Spring–loaded Idler has been designed to protect the Reel. Overtightening the Idler will decrease this protection.

Drive Belt Replacement (Fig. 42)

HYDRAULIC LIFT CYLINDERS (Fig. 43) The Mower Conditioner Lift System consists of a ”master–slave” cylinder arrangement, as shown. With a ”master–slave” setup, the hydraulic oil, from the rod end of the master cylinder, goes into the base end of the slave cylinder. Because of this arrangement, both cylinders will extend equally, under any load.

With a ”master–slave” arrangement, the cylinders can become un–phased such that the machine will raise unevenly (left end higher or lower than the right end).

Use the following steps to re–phase the lift cylinders: 1.

Completely raise and lower the unit several times, keeping the tractor hydraulic lever engaged, until NO cylinder movement is observed.

NOTE: The cylinders will move very slowly, while equalizing.

2.

If the unit is still unequal, proceed to step 3 or 4, depending on the problem.

To replace the Reel Drive Belt, it is necessary to disassemble the Variable Speed Drive Sheave following procedures outlined under the Reel Speed topic in the Adjustments chapter. BE SURE to adjust the Reel Belt tension, after installing a new Belt.

point as shown). With the fitting loose, raise the unit, until oil appears at the fitting. Then, retighten the fitting and repeat step 1.

WARNING 4.

BE SURE there is NO pressure in the lines, when loosening the fittings. Hydraulic fluid, under pressure, can penetrate the skin. If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at once. Injected fluid MUST BE surgically removed by a doctor familiar with this type of injury or gangrene may result.

If the master cylinder (left) will NOT raise fully, when the slave cylinder (right) is fully raised, loosen the fitting that goes into the slave cylinder (bleed point as shown). With the fitting loose, remove approximately 1/2 cup (4 oz) of oil for every one inch of cylinder length difference. Then, retighten the fitting and repeat step 1.

If the hydraulic cylinders become un–phased frequently, during use, it will be necessary to replace the piston seals in the master cylinder. Only replace the slave piston seal if it is leaking externally.

NOTE:

A leaky tractor valve may cause one or both hydraulic cylinders to raise slowly, while cutting.

The Tires should be inflated to different pressures; 36 PSIG (252 kPa) on the right side and, 18 PSIG (126 kPa) on the left side. The Wheel lug nuts should be torqued to 90 ft–lb. The Wheel Bearings should be torqued to 55 ft–lb while rotating the Wheel back and forth at least 90 degrees, then, the slotted nuts should be backed off between 1 and 2 cotter pin slots.

CAUTION Our Company does NOT sell replacement Tires. In addition, Tire mounting, repair and replacements should ONLY be attempted by a qualified tire manufacturer’s representative or by properly trained personnel following the tire manufacturer’s instruction. If you do NOT have such instructions, contact your tire dealer or our Company.

WARNING Inflating or servicing tires can be dangerous.

Whenever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires. In addition, do NOT place your fingers on the tire bead or rim during inflation; serious injury or amputation could result. In any event, to avoid possible death or serious injury, follow the safety precautions below:

•

BE SURE the Rim is clean and free of rust.

•

Lubricate both the tire beads and rim flanges with a soap solution. Do NOT use oil or grease.

•

Use a clip-on tire chuck with a remote hose and gauge which allows you to stand clear of the tire while inflating it.

•

NEVER inflate beyond 35 PSI (240 kPa) to seat the beads. If the beads have NOT seated by the time the pressure reaches 35 PSI, deflate the assembly, reposition the tire on the rim, relubricate both parts and re-inflate it. Inflation pressure beyond 35 PSI with unseated beads may break the bead or rim with explosive force sufficient to cause death or serious injury.

•

After seating the beads, adjust the inflation pressure to the recommended operating pressure listed.

•

Do NOT weld, braze, or otherwise attempt to repair and use a damaged rim.

CHAPTER 10 PREPARING FOR FIELD OPERATION TRACTOR & DRAWBAR REQUIREMENTS (Fig. 44)

a minimum of 35 hp, a 540 RPM PTO, PTO and hitch dimensions conforming to the ASAE Standard S 203, a remote hydraulic output capable of powering a single– acting cylinder, or two remote hydraulic outputs (if unit is going to be equipped with hydraulic Drawbar Positioner).

Adjust the tractor drawbar to meet the ASAE Standard drawbar dimensions shown. The recommended distances are 15” (380mm), from the ground to the top of the drawbar, and 8” (200mm), from the top of the drawbar to the centerline of the PTO shaft. The distance from the tractor PTO to the center of the hitch pin should be 14” (355mm), to avoid damage to the front Telescoping PTO Drive Shaft.

NOTE:

To prevent damage to the Mower Conditioner Telescoping Drive and PTO Tower, avoid making sharp left hand turns while the unit is operating.

NOTE: If the tractor is equipped with a 3–point hitch, raise the lower arms to their maximum height (or remove them) to avoid interference with the Telescoping Drive and PTO Tower on the Mower Conditioner.

Attach the Mower Conditioner Tongue to a 540 RPM tractor with a 1” diameter locking hitchpin that has a positive retaining device. After the connection is made, remove the Hitchjack and secure it to the ”Storage Hub” on the top of the Tongue.

Clean and lightly grease the splines on the tractor PTO shaft and the Yoke of the Telescoping Drive. Depress the Safety Lock Ring and slide the Yoke onto the tractor PTO shaft. Move the Yoke back and forth until the Safety Lock Ring locks into the groove in the PTO shaft.

TONGUE POSITIONING

WARNING BE SURE that the PTO Safety Lock Ring is positively engaged and that the Drawbar is securely connected to the tractor drawbar with a Locking Hitchpin, BEFORE starting the tractor engine. Also, BE SURE that the tractor PTO shield is in place and properly secured and that the Telescoping Drive Shields are rotating freely BEFORE starting the tractor engine.

GEHL MC2175 Mower Conditioner is available with two different Tongue Positioning Controls; Hydraulic or Mechanical.

Hydraulic Tongue Control (Fig. 47) The Hydraulic Swing Tongue Positioner uses a standard 8” stroke, 3” bore hydraulic cylinder (provided) to control the Tongue movement. The Hydraulic Tongue Positioner enables moving the Tongue to any position, from transport to full cutting width, while remaining on the tractor seat. This is extremely useful for steering the unit around obstacles, for finishing narrow strips without running down windrows and, for cutting square corners.

NOTE: Operation of the Tongue Control Cylinder requires a tractor with two remote hydraulic outputs; one for the Tongue Control and another for the Lift Control.

HYDRAULIC LIFT (Fig. 47) NOTE: The tractor MUST have a remote hydraulic output capable of handling a single–acting cylinder.

Install the appropriate quick–disconnect fitting (to match your tractor connection) onto the Lift Cylinder Hose using Loctite or equivalent pipe sealing compound. Make the Lift Cylinder Hose attachment to the tractor, start the tractor and operate the valve to raise and lower the Mower Conditioner several times to purge the air out of the system.

NOTE: If the Mower Conditioner is NOT horizontal, when it is being raised and lowered, refer to the Service chapter for corrective measures.

Mechanical Tongue Control (Fig. 48) The Mechanical Tongue Positioner Control provides two positions for the Tongue. One of the positions is for cutting and the other position is for transport. Activation of the Mechanical Position is controlled by a Rope which is routed to the back of the tractor. To change the Tongue position, pull the Rope to disengage the Positioner Handle from the Notch and drive ahead or back up. As the Tongue starts to move, release the Rope to allow the Handle to engage the desired Cutting or Transport Notch.

TRANSPORTING (Fig. 49 & see Fig. 47) BEFORE transporting the Mower Conditioner, perform the following:

BREAK–IN Before starting to cut and condition, it is recommended that the Mower Conditioner be broke–in, by running it empty for approximately 30 minutes. This initial run–in should be done with the Header on the ground and the Tongue in the cutting position. Before running the unit however, perform the daily (10 hour) maintenance routines listed in the beginning of the Operation chapter.

The Break–in should consist of a twenty five minute and a five minute running period. First, run the unit at idle PTO speed for twenty five minutes. Next, stop the unit and exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) before leaving the tractor seat to reinspect the unit. After inspection is complete, reconnect the PTO, restart the tractor, engage

Raise the unit as high as possible with the Hydraulic Lift. Next, position the two Transport Locks (one on each side of the Trailing Leg) up into the locking position. Then, slowly lower the weight of the unit onto the Transport Locks.

As required or when desired, Mower Conditioner can be equipped with a safety chain for operation on public highways. A sturdy Chain Loop is welded to the side of the Drawbar to facilitate anchoring the Chain. The safety chain, when attached in this manner, has the following characteristics: 1.

Chain is sufficiently slack to allow turns and movements of either the tractor or the farm implement, without placing tension on Chain.

Chain is of sufficient strength to hold decoupled implement (and its load) and tow it to the shoulder.

CHAPTER 12 STORAGE After the harvesting season is over, store the Mower Conditioner in a dry place where it is neither exposed to weather nor livestock.

Replace all Guards, Shields and Covers. Review and re–familiarize yourself with all safety precautions outlined in the Safety chapter of this manual.

Remove any trash or debris which may have accumulated on the unit during storage.

BEFORE STORING Perform the following preparations on the Mower Conditioner, before placing the unit into off–season storage: 1.

Release tension from the Drive Belts.

3.

Check and re–inflate the Tires and retorque the Wheel lugs.

Wash–off the entire machine. Take special care to remove gum from the Cutterbar and accumulated dirt from the Riser Pan.

4.

Realign and retension the Drive Belts using the procedures outlined in the Service chapter.

Remove trash and debris which may be wrapped around Shafts and/or lodged against Bearings.

5.

Readjust the Flotation Springs tension.

6.

Brush used motor oil on the Cutterbar and all Drive Chains.

Inspect the Cutterbar for bent or broken Guards and Sickle Sections, in need of replacement.

7.

Lubricate the entire unit and apply used motor oil to adjusting bolt threads.

Lubricate the entire machine following the information in the Lubrication chapter.

8.

Check and readjust Drive Chain tension.

CHAPTER 14 SET-UP & ASSEMBLY CRATED UNIT The MC2175 Mower Conditioner is shipped from the factory in two separate shipping bundles: the Main Frame package and the Drawbar package. The Main Frame is packaged at the factory in such a way that the front of the Header is next to the floor and the Windrow–forming Chamber is towards the ceiling.

Discardable shipping mounts (feet) are secured to the front of the Header for additional stability during warehousing.

Depending on facilities, the unit can either be handled with a forklift truck (capable of carrying at least 3100 lb or 1410 kg) or, with a 2 ton overhead hoist, using lifting eyes provided. In either case, handle the machine carefully, so as NOT to damage it. If a forklift is going to be used, BE SURE to spread the forks as far apart as possible and insert them into the space between the Header and Trailer Frame Tube.

DANGER Do NOT allow anyone near the unit, while it is being lowered. Also, BE SURE that the chains are long enough and strong enough to do the job.

NOTE: A spreader bar, that is at least as wide as the distance between the Mower Conditioner legs, MUST be used, to keep the chain apart and prevent the chain from crushing the sides of the Windrow Forming Chamber. In addition, BE SURE that the chain is long enough so that the Forming Chamber will clear the spreader bar as it is being pivoted down.

4.

WARNING BEFORE attempting to lift the unit with a forklift, securely attach chains from the shipping mounts to the forklift, on both ends of the unit, to prevent the unit from swinging–away, when the unit is picked–up. BE SURE also that nobody is close to the unit, while unit is being transported in the shipping position.

NOTE: When pulling on the legs, the hydraulic Lift Cylinders may extend slightly.

ASSEMBLY Proceed to set up the Mower Conditioner using the following steps: 1.

UNCRATING UNIT (Fig. 53) After the machine is placed in its uncrating location, use the following steps and the drawing provided to properly uncrate it:

Install the Drawbar (Tongue), which was shipped separately, using the Pivot Pin to attach it to the Frame. Secure the Pivot Pin with the attaching hardware provided.

NOTE:

It may be necessary to raise and block the front of the Header, to obtain the correct alignment, for installing the Pivot Pin. 2.

Install and lock the Hitchjack, onto the Drawbar Hub, and raise the Drawbar until the shipping mounts are off the ground.

Mount the Wheels and Tires onto the Wheel Hubs and torque the Lugs to 90 ft–lb.

3.

Wrap a long heavy chain around both legs of the unit, below the axles, and securely attach it with a spreader bar to the forklift carriage.

Remove the shipping mounts from both sides of the Header. Reposition the Pushbar in the top two holes of the Header End Panels.

4.

Remove the two shipping links that connect the Header to the Mower Conditioner Frame.

Remove all items that are banded to the unit (Wheels, Tires, PTO, ...etc.).

Keeping tension on the chain at all times, raise the forklift carriage to a point approximately 2 feet higher than the end of the Windrow Forming Chamber, as shown in the drawing provided.

Then, slowly pull and lift on the Mower Conditioner to rotate it around and rest it on the floor.

Install the PTO Tower Shield. Do NOT overtighten Nut and Washer as this will crush the plastic Shield. Install the Tower to Transmission Driveline securing Driveline to Transmission with Bolt torqued to 65 ft lb (88 Nm). Secure Driveline to Tower making SURE to properly orient and install the Lock Collar per Sealed Ball Bearing Replacement topic of the Service chapter (see Figure 54).

9.

Install 092406 Director Edging on the top edge of 092207 and 092208 Directors (see Figure 55).

10.

Remove and retain (2) Carriage Bolts and large Flange Nuts from the bottom of each of the Forming Chamber Support Assemblies (see Figure 56).

STUB GUARDS CONVERSION KIT When necessary, the Mower Conditioner can be converted from the factory installed Regular Heavy– duty Guards to Stub Guards. Stub Guard Field Installation Kits contain the appropriate Guards, Holddown Clips and attaching hardware to make the entire changeover. The used original Regular Guards MUST be disposed of separately. Order part number 190–32585.

CROP DIVIDER (RIGHT OR LEFT) When mowing and conditioning crops which are 3–feet tall or taller, the Mower Conditioner should be equipped with a Crop Divider Kit, by ordering stock number 803584. The Kit contains a Divider which can be secured to the Header, on either the right or left side, to push the long crop toward the center of the Header and keep it within the End Panel. Refer to separate instructions, packaged with the kit of parts, for mounting details.

HITCH POSITIONERS The Mower Conditioner MUST be equipped with either a mechanical or hydraulic Hitch Positioner package.

For a Hydraulic Positioner package, order stock number 804861. For a Manual Positioner, order stock Number 803564.

REPLACEMENT SICKLES For added convenience, Underserrated Sickle assemblies are available to match special cutting requirements. Likewise, standard Overserrated Sickle assemblies are available for replacement or spare assembly purposes, as desired. All Sickle assemblies MUST be ordered by proper part number. Refer to your Service Parts Manual for additional information.

ROCK GUARD & CUTTERBAR WEAR PLATE When mowing and conditioning in rocky, sandy or special field conditions, that can cause extreme wear on the Cutterbar, the Mower Conditioner should be equipped with a Rock Guard & Cutterbar Wear Plate Kit. Order Stock Number 804891. The Rock Guard & Cutterbar Wear Plate Kit consists of a non–adjustable Plate that attaches to the bottom of the Cutterbar, for added protection. Refer to separate instructions, packaged with the kit of parts, for mounting details.

SAFETY CHAIN A 10 ton Safety Chain is available. Order the Safety Chain by stock number 803098.

TRANSPORT LIGHTS A Transport Light Kit is available. Order the Light Kit by stock number 806188. Refer to separate instructions, packaged with the kit of parts, for mounting details.

CHAIN OILER A drip style oiler system is available for the top Conditioner Roll Drive Chain. Order the Oiler Kit by stock number 806201. Refer to separate instructions, packaged with the kit of parts, for mounting details.

CHAPTER 16 DECAL LOCATIONS GENERAL INFORMATION Decal Locations information is provided to assist in the proper selection and application of new decals, in the event the original decal(s) become(s) damaged or the machine is repainted. Refer to the listing for the illustration reference number, part number, description and quantity of each decal provided in the Kit. Refer to the appropriate illustration(s) for replacement location(s).

NOTE: Refer to the SAFETY Chapter of the Operator’s Manual for the specific information provided on all of the various Safety Decals furnished in the Decal Kit(s).

To insure proper selection for correct replacement decal(s), compare all of the various close-up location photographs to your machine BEFORE starting to refinish the unit. Then, circle each pictured decal (applicable to your machine) while checking-off its part number in the listing. After you have verified all the decals needed for replacement, set aside unneeded decals for disposal.

NEW DECAL APPLICATION Surfaces MUST be free from dirt, dust, grease and other foreign material before applying the new decal. To apply a solid-formed decal, remove the smaller portion of the decal backing paper and apply this part of the exposed adhesive backing to the clean surface while maintaining proper position and alignment. Slowly peel off the other portion of the backing paper while applying hand pressure to smooth-out the decal surface.

CAUTION ALWAYS observe Safety Rules shown on Decals. If Decals become damaged, or if the unit is repainted, replace the Decals. If repainting, BE SURE that ALL Decals from the Kit(s) which apply to your machine, are affixed to your unit.
