FRASER Coast Regional Council is proposing to list the historic Scarness Band Rotunda on the Local Heritage Register, recognising its cultural significance and long-standing role in the community.
Mayor George Seymour said the rotunda had been a fixture of the Scarness foreshore for nearly a century and holds an important place in the region’s history.
“Built in 1926, the Scarness Band Rotunda has been a focal point for entertainment, community gatherings, and celebrations for generations,” he said.
“From Sunday concerts and seaside speeches to sheltering beachgoers, this structure tells the story of Scarness as a popular tourist and holiday destination over the past 100 years.
“Council is now taking the first formal step in recognising this iconic landmark by proposing to include it on the Local Heritage Register, which acknowledges places of local historic, social and cultural importance.”
Mayor Seymour said the proposal aligns with current refurbishment works to restore the structure and ensure its safe use into the future.
“Repairs are underway to fix timber rot, replace the roof and repaint the rotunda, making it safe and accessible for the community once again,” he said.
“By proposing to list it as a heritage place, we’re also honouring its historic value and the strong connection many residents have to this much-loved site.”
An independent heritage assessment found the rotunda meets multiple criteria for listing, including its importance in demonstrating the evolution of seaside tourism in the region, its rarity as a surviving pre-war foreshore structure, and its long-standing community ties.
The proposed listing applies to the rotunda structure itself, not the surrounding parkland, and acknowledges that it has been relocated several times within the Scarness foreshore precinct.
Council will soon begin the public notification process required under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992, which will allow residents to provide feedback before any final decision is made.

HERVEY Bay residents impacted by ex-Cyclone Alfred will soon have a dedicated space to rest, reconnect, and access support, with the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) launching its Pop-up Recovery Lounge at Pialba Place Shopping Centre this June.
Running until August 2025, the Recovery Lounge is a free, drop-in space designed to help locals recover from recent flood events. Open to everyone, the Lounge aims to provide comfort, connection, and vital support to the community.
HBNC CEO Tanya Stevenson said the space had been created with the whole community in mind.
“This space is about rebuilding positivity and making it easy for our community to connect and
recover after the floods,” Ms Stevenson said.
“You don’t need to book or sign up — just walk in. Whether you're seeking information on disaster recovery or preparedness, want to have a chat, or just need a quiet space to rest, the Recovery Lounge is here for you.”
Funded by the Queensland Government, the Lounge will be staffed by HBNC’s Community Recovery Workers, who will offer friendly support, practical information, and referrals to a wide range of services.
A rotating roster of visiting service providers will also be available onsite to provide pop-up assistance.
The Lounge will include a number of unique features to make it a welcoming and engaging environment. A

Their presence will add a special touch to the space, helping people find moments of peace and positivity amid the challenges of recovery.
The official opening date and hours of operation are expected to be announced soon.

HERVEY BAY successfully hosted the Queensland Junior Doctor Conference (JDC), delivering a significant economic and reputational boost to the Fraser Coast region recently.
The two-day event, held at the UNISC Fraser Coast Campus, drew more than 220 medical students and 25 guest speakers from across Queensland.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Lachlan Cosgrove said the region is continuing to build its profile as a premier destination for major events and conferences.
“Hosting the JDC adds to a growing list of high-profile events held in the region—from AFL and triathlons to major music festivals—and brings real economic and reputational value to our community,” Cr Cosgrove said.
Curated by the AMA Queensland Committee of Doctors in Training, the conference provided a dynamic platform for early-career doctors and medical students to connect, present research, and explore future career pathways in a regional setting.
The program featured topics ranging from regional medical practice and wellbeing
to financial literacy and the growing role of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Participants also engaged in a unique ‘speed dating’ session with specialist doctors, offering valuable one-on-one career insights.
Keynote speaker Dr Fiona Baker, Clinical Director of Integrated Care on the Fraser Coast, reflected on her extensive medical career and highlighted the opportunities and rewards of working in regional healthcare.
She was joined by AMA Queensland President and Hervey Bay local, Dr Nick Yim.
“This event offers an ideal opportunity to start building strong connections with
the future of our medical workforce,” Dr Yim said.
“It’s great to bring the JDC to the Fraser Coast, continuing a long history – following events in Cairns and Townsville – of showcasing regional medicine.
“As surgical wait times keep getting longer and access to primary care continues to dwindle, improving the health of regional communities like Hervey Bay and Maryborough has never been more important.
“We hope this event sparks something in students –whether it’s discovering a specialty they love or getting a clearer sense of where they want to make a difference.”

FRASER Coast Regional Council is pushing ahead with a significant redevelopment of the Pialba Caravan Park, in a move designed to ensure the popular holiday destination remains safe, accessible, and attractive well into the future.
Council has awarded a $10.5 million contract to Rejuvenate Group Pty Ltd, a company with a proven track record in delivering similar tourism infrastructure projects across the Fraser Coast.
The extensive upgrade will be delivered in stages, allowing sections of the park to remain operational throughout the construction period and minimising disruption for guests.
The planned improvements are comprehensive and aimed at modernising the facilities to align with the expectations of today’s travellers.
Key features of the upgrade include the complete replacement of underground services, upgrades to internal road networks, extensive landscaping, and the construction of a brand-new camp kitchen and barbecue area.
In addition, new toilet and shower amenities will be installed, along with the development of a new
recreation zone to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Cr Lachlan Cosgrove emphasised the importance of the project in addressing the limitations of ageing infrastructure and adapting to the needs of the modern tourism market.
“The current infrastructure is ageing and wasn’t designed for today’s larger caravans and RVs,” he said.
“The upgrade is about making the park more functional, comfortable and enjoyable for visitors while maintaining its relaxed coastal feel.”
The Rejuvenate Group was selected as the preferred contractor after a competitive tender process.
The company is no stranger to projects of this nature,
having successfully delivered similar upgrades at the Scarness and Burrum Heads caravan parks—both popular locations within the region.
To facilitate the commencement of Stage 1, bookings for the affected area of the park have been paused from 31 July 2025.
This will ensure contractors have the access they need to begin works safely and efficiently.
Construction is anticipated to take approximately 18 months, with the timeline subject to weather conditions.
For more details and to stay updated on the project’s progress, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the Council’s official website at: www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ caravan-parks-upgrade
ART, culture and community storytelling will take centre stage on the Fraser Coast again in 2025/26, as Council continues its investment in the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) in partnership with the Queensland Government.
Deputy Mayor and RADF Advisory Committee Chair Cr Sara Diana Faraj said the program would deliver $120,000 in funding to support local creative development and cultural experiences across the region.
“This program empowers local artists and creatives with the resources to develop their skills, share their stories, and connect with the wider community through arts and culture,” Cr Faraj said.
“From emerging artists attending workshops to largescale creative projects that bring our community together, the RADF program makes a real difference to the cultural life of the Fraser Coast.”
The 2025/26 RADF program includes: supporting creative development and community projects across three categories: Participate,
Develop and Share.
aligned with the Fraser Coast Arts and Culture Strategy.
Council also endorsed six community members to serve on the Fraser Coast RADF Advisory Committee from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2027: Mr Greig Bolderrow, Mr Roger Jennings, Ms Lee-Ann Handley, Ms Mahney Wearne, Mr Matthew Richers, and Ms Susan Rogers.
“The Committee brings a diverse range of arts experience and community knowledge, and plays a vital role in assessing funding applications and shaping the program,” Cr Faraj said.
Minister for Education and the Arts John-Paul Langbroek said the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) has an impressive track record of supporting local arts and
cultural programs across Queensland communities.
He said the Government’s multi-year RADF investment provided greater funding certainty for 59 regional councils, streamlined program management and red tape reduction, while boosting the state’s vibrant arts and cultural scene.
Applications for the RADF Community Funding Program open on 7 July 2025 and close on 11 May 2026, with four rounds of assessment throughout the year.
“Whether you’re a musician, visual artist, performer or storyteller, we encourage you to explore how RADF can help bring your creative ideas to life,” Cr Faraj said.

THIS June, the team at Hungry Jack’s Hervey Bay is inviting the local community to take part in a month-long fundraising effort in support of Make-A-Wish Australia.
Running from June 3rd to June 31st, the campaign aims to raise funds to help grant wishes to terminally ill children across the country.
The initiative is part of a nationwide effort by Hungry Jack’s, with the company’s overall goal set at raising $2.5 million to support this important cause.
The Hervey Bay store is hoping to raise $7,000 locally, going above and beyond to bring the community together.
The team hopes that with the generosity of locals, they can promote marketing and gain donations to give back some of the anticipation and
excitement that a childhood illness takes away.
To encourage support, the Hervey Bay store will host a range of “fun days” throughout the month, transforming the location into a hub of family-friendly activity and goodwill.
These events will include face painting provided by friendly staff members, a community bake sale, classic car shows, and themed dress-up days on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
The campaign will culminate in a festive Winter Wonderland celebration on the final day.
The store has issued a heartfelt call to the Hervey Bay community, saying, “We are reaching out to invite you to be a part of something truly life-changing. Whether you fund a magical experience,
sponsor a wish, or spread the word, your support can bring light and laughter to a child’s darkest days.”
Businesses and individuals alike are encouraged to sponsor the store or participate in any way they can to help raise both awareness and funds.
The team emphasises that every contribution, no matter how big or small, can help make a lasting impact on a child’s life.
“Together we can make the impossible possible for the children who need it most.”
Locals are urged to visit Hungry Jack’s Hervey Bay during June, join in the activities, and help bring joy to children facing unimaginable challenges.
MONDAY TO FRIDAY 8AM 5PM
NANCY Fermoyle has lived in Hervey Bay for nearly 85 years. The changes she has witnessed in her hometown during this time never cease to amaze her.
“The Bay has changed so much from the small coastal town it was. I grew up on a cane and dairy farm in the outer suburbs. “The town is now encroaching on our farm with houses built right out to us,” Nancy said.
“You can access the rest of the world from the airport, and there are so many traffic lights and people milling about.”
With a population of around 2,000 people, services in Hervey Bay were limited when Nancy was growing up in the 1940s.
The closest hospital was in Maryborough, and the local school closed due to declining student numbers.
Living her childhood on the farm with her younger sister was a simple time, full of fun and adventure.
“My sister and I loved our dolls. I also loved climbing the big tree out the back,” Nancy said.
“One day my last jump didn’t land as well as planned and I ended up with a broken arm. I’d just received my first bike for my sixth birthday, so I quickly learnt to ride as a onearmed bandit!”
After starting school 12km
from home, Nancy’s family was delighted when her daily travel was reduced when the local school re-opened after a 10-year closure.
The re-opening was conditional on Nancy’s fouryear-old sister being enrolled to make up the mandatory minimum student numbers.
“While she was too young to start learning, she just needed to turn up. She would wander around the school and nap under the desks in the classroom,” Nancy recalls.
Finishing school in Year 10, Nancy commenced work at Caswell’s Radio Centre in Maryborough, followed by a short stint at Hyde’s Fashion Centre. She then worked as a secretary to the manager of the Lennox Street Holden dealership, where she met her husband, Dennis. Nancy and Dennis married in 1960, the same year they bought Nancy’s family farm. Nancy commenced working on the farm, where she and Dennis had their two sons.
The tough manual work of stripping the cane to the stalk was offset by the joy she had planting the cane.
While Nancy loved farm life, it presented plenty of challenges. The 1969 drought saw the farming industry dry up and the trial of daylight savings two decades later threw a spanner in the movement of
cattle for milking.
Now 84, Nancy enjoys quieter days. Her son has taken over managing and working the farm, allowing Nancy to relax and reflect on her times there.
“The history and memories my home holds make this a special place to me,” Nancy said.
Nancy enjoys reading the newspaper and completing the daily puzzles – a long way from the days of cranking the 32-volt battery in the garden shed to get it charged for the evening. She remains connected to her family and regularly gets out and about with friends, with the support of Carinity Home Care Hervey Bay.
The Carinity Home Care team ensures Nancy is ready for her day.
Her carers shower and support her with getting dressed and assist with cleaning and other duties to keep her safe at home.
“I have never been so well treated and supported. I am treated with respect and great care,” Nancy said.
“The Carinity care staff are all wonderful, they do everything you request and always ask if there is anything else I need before they leave. If I didn’t have Carinity I wouldn’t be here in my home.” Advertisement

To keep making Queensland safer, the new Queensland Government is expanding ‘adult crime adult time’ to include 33 serious offences. THEY SAY it takes a village to raise a child—and at Hervey Bay Hospital, it starts with a midwife.
On this International Day of the Midwife, the hospital honoured its Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) and unveiled new initiatives to support expectant families across the Fraser Coast.
For over a decade, Hervey Bay’s MGP midwives have walked alongside women through pregnancy, birth, and beyond—building trust and improving outcomes.
MGP midwife Amy Kellahan, who joined the service in 2020, said the model was born from women seeking more personalised and continuous care.
“Continuity of carer is the gold standard of maternity care,” she said. “It’s not just
about seeing the same face, it’s about building trust, fostering open communication, and empowering women to make informed choices.”
Unlike traditional maternity models, MGP midwives are on call 24/7—supporting women from antenatal visits to delivery and up to five days postpartum.
Amy said this leads to fewer interventions and better mental wellbeing. “Some of our most memorable moments are when women return to have their second or third baby with the same midwife. That ongoing connection is incredibly special,” she said. “We’re not there for a medical procedure—we’re there for a life event.”
More than 2,000 babies have been born through MGP at Hervey Bay.

Manager Joanne Fendley highlighted several recent improvements: Saturday antenatal clinics have improved access for working families, while Thursday vaccination sessions now offer free whooping cough and RSV vaccines to pregnant people.
“We’ve already seen fewer missed appointments and more family involvement,” she said.
The hospital also recently introduced its first public birthing pool, giving Fraser Coast mothers access to water birth for the first time.
“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved—and even more excited about what’s to come,”
Joanne said.

IN A LANDMARK move to support regional media, the Queensland Government has committed a minimum of 75% of all press advertising placements to rural and regional newspapers across the state.
The commercial support is a significant boost for local news, as the Hervey Bay Advertiser celebrates five-years of hyper-local journalism.
State Member for Hervey Bay, David Lee, has strongly welcomed the policy and highlighted its importance for communities like Hervey Bay.
“This is exactly the kind of support our regional communities need,” Mr Lee said.
“Local newspapers like the Hervey Bay Advertiser are absolutely
vital to keeping people connected, informed, and engaged. I’ve always said that public messaging works best when it’s delivered by trusted, community-focused platforms, and this policy delivers on that principle.”
“This is not just a win for local media, it’s a win for community resilience, and for the people of Hervey Bay who rely on publications like the Advertiser for timely, relevant, and reliable information.”
The policy, which applies to all Queensland Government departments from 1 July 2025, is being praised as a timely and strategic investment in the future of regional journalism.
Malcolm Quinn, Publisher of the Hervey Bay Advertiser, said
the announcement couldn’t come at a better time, as the publication prepares to celebrate its fifth birthday later this month.
“This is truly a milestone moment, not just for regional media across Queensland, but for local titles like ours here in Hervey Bay,” Mr Quinn said.
“I have been in regional print media for over thirty years and this is one of the best announcements I have seen. It shows that the government understands how vital local print remains.”
“The Advertiser was built on the belief that local people want local stories, told by people who live here, who understand the community and who are passionate about sharing its successes, challenges, and voices.”
Mr Quinn said the commitment of
represents
than just revenue,
a validation of the vital role that hyperlocal media plays in building informed and resilient communities.
“This funding isn’t just about placing ads. It’s about recognising that the Hervey Bay Advertiser delivers journalism that empowers people, whether it's covering local council decisions, highlighting community events, or helping vital local organisation to be heard.”
“We are proud to have built a strong, independent voice for Hervey Bay, and this announcement shows that the government values what we do.”
Mr Quinn added that the Advertiser’s strong connection with Hervey Bay’s diverse demographic, from retirees and young families to local business owners, clearly positions it as an effective and trusted channel for government communication.
“Hervey Bay is one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions, and the people here want to read about what matters to them,” he said.
“Our paper delivers content that reflects the voices and values of this community. It’s fantastic to see the Queensland Government recognising the unique power of regional media to do that.”
Mr Lee echoed the sentiment,
saying the announcement is a strong endorsement of regional resilience and community identity.
“We have seen time and again, that local newspapers like the Hervey Bay Advertiser are a trusted source of information for many people in the region,” Mr Lee said.
“I’m committed to seeing this policy succeed and ensuring Hervey Bay continues to benefit from strong local journalism.”
The Queensland Government’s decision is expected to channel a major share of public communication funding to grassroots media across the state, reinforcing its trust in regional publishers to deliver critical messages to Queenslanders.
THE HEARTBEAT of Fraser Coast Hospice doesn’t come from machines or monitors—it comes from the compassionate individuals who walk through its doors every day, offering their time, skills and open hearts.
“What would Fraser Coast Hospice be without our volunteers?” It’s a question often pondered. The answer?
“We simply couldn’t be who we are without them.”
With a remarkable 256 volunteer hours recorded in April alone, and 36 active volunteers currently supporting the hospice, their impact reaches far beyond the walls of the six-bed facility.
From warmly welcoming visitors at reception to meticulously maintaining gardens, assisting with admin, fundraising, and community outreach, our volunteers are everywhere—quietly making a profound difference.
Each task, no matter how small, carries immense value.
“You’ll find them at our reception desk, creating that crucial first impression that says ‘you’re in good hands now,’” the team shares.
That friendly welcome can make all the difference to families stepping into the hospice for the first time— often during life’s most difficult chapters.
The beauty of this volunteer force lies in its diversity.
Former nurses and teachers, tradespeople, accountants, retirees, and young adults all unite around a single purpose: to ease the journey for someone else.
“Many tell us they arrive intending to give but depart having received far more— meaningful connections, renewed perspective, and the privilege of supporting families through life’s most challenging journey.”
Their presence also extends into the wider community—at events, in shopping centres, and through fundraising initiatives such as raffles and charity stalls.
“Our volunteers touch every aspect of hospice life with their generosity of spirit.”
One shining example of community spirit came from Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School, whose students and staff selected Fraser Coast Hospice as their local charity for Project Compassion.
The school raised over $3,000, with $1,250 donated directly to the hospice.
Their efforts—from Crazy Hair Days to Fish and Chip Fridays—were powered by pure enthusiasm and kindness.
“Seeing children so passionate about helping others warms our hearts immensely…Your kindness means the world to us.”
Fraser Coast Hospice offers fee-free care to those facing end-of-life, made possible entirely through community support.
Every raffle ticket, volunteer hour, and dollar donated helps keep this vital service available to families when they need it most.
There are many ways to support Fraser Coast Hospice:
• Become a Hero of Hospice through monthly giving
• Volunteer your time or skills
• Attend fundraising events
• Purchase raffle tickets

ABBEY Watson, a talented young artist, has secured third place in the 2025 Queensland Youth digital art competition, impressing judges with her thoughtful and vibrant piece centred around the theme of “Youth.”
“Participating in the 2025 Queensland Youth digital art competition was an exciting opportunity to take place in.
“I saw the competition on the Queensland Youth website, and decided to try my hand at it. After sketching, colouring and refining my piece, incorporating techniques of composition and different colour palettes to set each character differently, I submitted it to the website,” Abbey explained. Her artwork focused on portraying teenagers from various backgrounds, highlighting diversity and unity.
“With the topic of ‘Youth’, I wanted to focus more on the aspect of teenagers, and how even if they’re all different, they can all get along. From research and using people I know from my life, I drew inspiration to design the characters.
“I wanted to include a lot of diversity in my piece, so I drew teenagers from all different ethnicities,” she added.
submitting, I found out that I had won third place through a phone call from Queensland Youth.
Abbey received exciting news about her achievement roughly two weeks after submitting her artwork.

“I ended up winning the $250 prize that came with third place!” The top three winners were officially announced by the Minister of Queensland Youth, Sam O’Connor, recognising their artistic talents and contributions.
Abbey reflected on her experience, saying, “This was a great experience to participate in and I look forward to many in the future!”
Abbey’s success is a testament to the creativity and passion of young Queenslanders, showcasing how art can bring communities together and celebrate diversity.
Her work has inspired others to express themselves and embrace cultural differences through creative mediums.
THE HERVEY Bay community gathered to mark two significant milestones celebrated by the Hervey Bay Family History Association and the Fraser Coast Hervey Bay Library.
Over 40 attendees, including Mayor George Seymour, current and former library staff, visitors, and association members, joined in the festivities.
The first occasion marked the 25th anniversary of the Hervey Bay Family History Association’s move into the Hervey Bay Library.
In 2000, Dallas Curry, then Library Manager, invited the Association to relocate into the library to manage the combined family history collection.
Since then, the Family History room has grown into a bustling research hub frequented by locals and visitors alike.
“With all our online research resources which include Ancestry.com, Find My Past, Australian and overseas Birth, Death & Marriage records etc. We also have an extensive collection of books on families, towns, cemeteries, convicts in Australia etc.
“Our volunteers are there six days a week to help
anyone with their research. We will definitely be able to help you with your research,” said representatives of the Association.
The second highlight was the launch of a booklet documenting all known burials in the Nikenbah Cemetery.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the construction of the first Christian church in the Hervey Bay district, built by Danish settlers from the village of Aalborg—now known as Nikenbah—alongside the cemetery.
Dedicated members of the Hervey Bay Family History Association conducted extensive research for the
booklet.
All supporting records have been digitised and are accessible in the Family History room at the Hervey Bay Library.
The booklet is available for purchase at the Family History room in the Fraser Coast Regional Library, Pialba, for $10 plus $8 postage and packaging.
Those wishing to order by mail can contact the Association via email at herveybay.famhist@gmail. com for payment details. The events not only celebrated a quarter-century of community history research but also preserved a vital piece of local heritage for future generations.
CREATING a space where you can truly thrive—mind, body, and soul—is one of the most powerful gifts you can give yourself.
The World Health Organisation reminds us that health isn’t just physical; it’s a harmony of what we think, feel, and believe.
So, ask yourself: Are the environments around you nurturing and uplifting? Do your home, work, and social circles bring you joy, or do they drain your energy and dim your light?
Surround yourself with people who genuinely wish for your best.
Conversations that inspire, encourage, and energise are the fuel for your growth.
Conversely, steer clear of gossip, jealousy, or negativity that only serve to diminish your worth or the worth of others.
If certain friendships or social media accounts make you feel less than, it’s time to mute, limit, or delete them.
Your mental space is sacred — guard it fiercely.
Be selective about who speaks into your life. If advice
or words don’t come from a place of love and genuine care, thank them but don’t let their words shape how you see yourself.
True friends and mentors speak in a way that lifts you up, even when the truth is hard to hear.
If you find yourself
needing to step away from toxic environments or relationships, reach out for help. Connect with someone who can support your journey—whether it’s a counsellor, a trusted friend, or a support group.
For those struggling with addictive behaviours or unhealthy patterns, know that
help is available.
It might take courage, and the process could be uncomfortable, but making that first step is key.
And if you’re someone who supports others, remember, boundaries are vital. Giving too much without care for your own wellbeing can leave you drained and lost.
Your environment— physical, mental, and emotional—shapes your life more than you realise.
It’s not just about the space around you; it’s about the conversations in your head and the messages you allow into your soul.
Choose intentionally. Protect your peace.
Foster environments and relationships that nourish your mind, energise your spirit, and encourage your growth.
Because when your world is aligned with love, intention, and genuine connection, you’re not just surviving— you’re thriving.
HIFU Treatment
Take years off your skin with no fuss, no needles, and no downtime…
Skin laxity is a problem that affects everyone as we age. Over the years, the effects of gravity, genetics, and environmental factors cause our skin to lose elasticity, resulting in a duller, sagging appearance. This process gradually leads to loose skin on the face, neck, and décolletage, often making us look older and more tired than we feel. However, with the advanced HIFU treatment, you can combat these signs of ageing and restore a youthful appearance.
What makes HIFU stand out from other skin tightening procedures?
• Deep-acting technology: HIFU treatment is unique in its ability to reach the SMAS layer — the foundational structure that supports facial muscles. This depth of penetration stimulates collagen and elastin fibres, leading to firmer, lifted, and more youthful-looking skin over time.
• Non-surgical and comfortable: HIFU offers a safe and effective alternative to traditional surgical procedures. With no incisions, anaesthesia or scarring, it provides visible lifting results in a completely non-invasive way.
• Targets stubborn fat: HIFU laser treatment is highly effective at reducing localised fat deposits, making it an excellent choice for areas such as the double chin, love handles, and post-pregnancy lower abdomen. It works by creating thermal coagulation within fat cells, which leads to permanent fat breakdown.
What makes HIFU stand out from other skin tightening procedures?
• Face and body contouring: In addition to tightening the skin, HIFU therapy reshapes the contours of the treated area, enhancing natural definition and proportion.
• No downtime required: As a walk-in, walk-out treatment, you can return to your usual activities straight away — with no need for recovery time or lifestyle disruption.
• Long-lasting, progressive results: While some clients notice an immediate lifting effect, the most significant improvements develop gradually over 2 to 3 months, as the body produces new collagen. These results can last for several months, depending on individual skin condition.
• Customised precision: Multiple handpieces allow the practitioner to adjust depth and intensity based on the specific area being treated, ensuring each session is carefully tailored to your needs and facial structure. Purchase here

AN ENVIRONMENTAL
education hub, new walking trails, a birdwatching area, riverbank planting and a native tree forest are among the ideas being explored by Fraser Coast Regional Council for projects funded by the sale of surplus land at Royle Street in Maryborough.
Environment spokesperson
Cr Zane O’Keefe said the aim was to turn the land sale into lasting benefits for the environment and the community.
“We’re looking at projects that will protect our natural areas, help native wildlife, and give people more ways to connect with nature,” he said.
“Some projects would improve existing parks and bushland, while others could restore areas along the Mary River or create new spaces to explore and learn about the environment.”
Six projects have been chosen as the top priorities for further investigation. These are:
• Creating an environmental hub at Takura Reserve –turning an unused building into a space for workshops and community learning;
• Building walking trails along Eli Creek Road in Point Vernon and Eli Waters –making it easier for people to
enjoy the coast while protecting native plants;
• Designing a birdwatching and education area – to help people learn about the shorebirds that migrate to the Fraser Coast each year;
• Creating a nature link between two parks in Tinana – to allow both people and wildlife to move safely through the area;
• Restoring riverbank areas along the Mary River – by planting native trees to reduce erosion and improve water quality;
• Growing a forest of native Kauri trees on the Mary River flats – to bring back a tree species that was once common in the area.
“These ideas came from community members on our environment advisory committees, and they’ve been carefully looked at to see which ones are most likely to succeed,” Cr O’Keefe said.
Council will now do more work to assess the cost and feasibility of each project before deciding what to include in future budgets. External grants and other funding options will also be considered to help deliver the projects.
The Royle Street land was sold to Riverside Christian College in 2023 for $635,000 to support the school’s growth, with the proceeds set aside for environmental purposes.

FROM the quiet country charm of Hamilton, Victoria, to the sunlit waters of Hervey Bay, Jodie Kirkwood has lived a life brimming with courage, compassion, and curiosity. Guided by a strong sense of service and a deep love of people, Jodie’s story is one of growth, resilience, and the beauty of following your passions, wherever they may lead.
Born in 1974 in the small town of Hamilton, Jodie grew up with an older brother. Her early years were filled with community spirit and outdoor adventures.
She joined Brownies, then moved through Girl Guides and Ranger Guides, eventually becoming an assistant leader. Her dedication earned her the prestigious BP Award (named after Baden-Powell, founder of the Guiding movement) and is one of the highest awards a Guide can
At just seventeen, Jodie was one of only nine Australians chosen to represent the country in an international Guiding exchange to America.
“It was amazing,” she recalls. “We went to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and spent time with local families in New Jersey. We even camped with skunks!” The trip opened her eyes to a new culture and sparked a lifelong love of travel.
After finishing high school, Jodie wasn’t sure what career path to follow. While her brother excelled academically, Jodie gravitated toward more hands-on pursuits. She had an early taste of responsibility with her first job as a paper girl at eleven, followed by years in retail at Coles and IGA, where she eventually became assistant manager.
In her late 20s, Jodie left Hamilton
for Adelaide and began working at Cheap as Chips.
Then, her adventurous spirit took over once again, she packed her bags for the U.S., travelling around in a campervan before heading to London. There, she landed a job with Model Catering, a hospitality business owned by a former model who catered for major clients like Nike and Ralph Lauren.
“I ran the cafe, and while it was a steep learning curve, I absolutely loved it.”
Jodie’s travels took her across Europe, Egypt, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia before she returned to Australia feeling a little lost. Eventually, a friend invited her on holiday to Hervey Bay, and it changed everything. She fell in love with the laid-back lifestyle and decided to make it her home.
“People are just so friendly here.
It’s peaceful. I’ve never looked back,” she says.
Within a day of job-hunting at the marina, she had three offers.
She began working at Café Balaena and later at Marina Photographics, where her passion for photography blossomed. For years, she photographed tourists on whale boats and shot ‘Dining Out’ features for the Fraser Coast Chronicle.
When Marina Photographics closed, Jodie moved into marine tourism as a hostess and deckhand, first with Mikat Cruises and later with Tasman Venture.
“Being out on the ocean, seeing whales, turtles, and dolphins, brings me peace. And seeing the joy on people’s faces never gets old.”
Sometimes in the off season, she helps out with Blue Dolphin’s sunset sails and dolphin tours as well as Spirit of Hervey Bay Mary River
Jodie has faced personal loss with the passing of both her parents, her mum to cancer and her dad to Parkinson’s. Still, she finds joy in simple pleasures like gardening, photography, beach walks, and spending time with her much-loved rehomed Rottweiler.
Her heart finds peace in Bali, a place she’s visited seven times, always avoiding the tourist track in favour of quiet, soulful escapes.
A proud homeowner, Jodie saw her house advertised on the back cover of the former Hervey Bay Independent and just knew it was meant to be. Kind, grounded, and hardworking, she’s embraced a life of meaning and adventure.
If she could speak to her younger self? “Be free and do what you love. When you find your passion, follow it.”

YOU MIGHT NEVER MEET THEM BUT YOU MIGHT HELP THEM STAY
Every home we sell, helps us to support the amazing work done by Fraser Coast Mates. A portion of each sale empowers the important work they do in the community we all share.
Fraser Coast Mates was formed in 2018 by a group of local business people who were concerned by the rise of debilitating mental health issues and rising suicide rates across our region.
They are a local organisation on the Fraser Coast that aims to build local awareness and grow conversations about mental wellbeing by bridging the gap between those suffering and the
local support services available and ultimately making progress for suicide prevention.
Their number one goal is to encourage mates to be better equipped to help their mates and colleagues in times of struggle by telling local stories, helping mates gain clarity around what services are available locally and coordinating community events.
