COSY NIGHTS

AT AN age where many have long stepped away from the sporting spotlight, Hervey Bay’s own John Farham and Gordon Kellerman, both now into their 90s, are still walking the fairways, clubs in hand, chasing birdies and swapping laughs.

These two golfing stalwarts are living proof that staying active, social, and passionate can be a lifelong pursuit.

And for John and Gordon, it’s golf that keeps their spirits high and their bodies moving.

John Farham took up the game relatively late, at 64 years old, but it didn’t take long for him to fall in love with it.

“I played cricket, hockey, and a little rugby in my younger years,” John recalls.

“But golf took a while to win me over. My late father tried to get me into it on a hot day in Zambia by making me caddy for him. In that African heat, I swore I’d never touch a club again.”

John has made golf a regular part of his life. These days, he plays with a handicap of 21 and enjoys every minute of it.

“I’m out there for the sunshine, the company, and the cold beer

keeps his mind sharp through light financial work and still follows the cricket religiously, especially the redball format.

“Golf keeps the body ticking. The rest keeps the brain going,” he says

“I just walked the course with him and thought, ‘This is brilliant.’ I was hooked from that moment,” Gordon says.

afterward. The scores matter less than the experience. That’s what I love.”

But fate had other plans. Since picking up the game in his sixties,

John, who moved to Australia from South Africa in 1979, also

For Gordon Kellerman, golf wasn’t a later-in-life discovery, it was love at first sight.

He picked up a club as a 13-year-

Now in his early 90s,

Gordon still plays three times a week, and only in competitions.

“I don’t bother with

no. I can’t quite reach the green anymore,” he jokes.

Even so, Gordon continues to turn up, swing away, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with the game.

“The social side is a bonus,” he admits.

“The real reason I play is because I love golf. But I have made great friends, been on golfing trips around Australia and even overseas. It’s been a huge part of my life.”

His best-ever score? A one-over-par 71 on a par-70 course.

“I remember it clearly” Gordon says. “It’s a feeling you don’t forget.”

Both men say the same thing when asked how long they will keep playing.

As long as they can swing a club.

social rounds,” he laughs.

“I like to keep it serious.”

Over the years, Gordon’s game reached impressive heights, peaking with a handicap of 10.

His record even includes a remarkable three holes-in-one, one in 1979, another in 1991, and the most recent in 2010.

“Am I due for another? Maybe

“It’s not just about the physical side,” John says. “It’s the fresh air, the mateship, and that little thrill when you hit a good shot.”

Whether they are breaking 100 or chasing that elusive hole-in-one, John and Gordon prove that age is no match for passion - there is always another great round waiting just around the next tee.

A BOLD new Wearable Art category and fashion parade is set to take centre stage in this year’s Waste to Art Competition, with entries now open across the Fraser Coast.

Now in its eighth year, the annual competition invites people of all ages to reimagine waste by transforming discarded items into creative and meaningful works of art.

“Whether it’s a sculpture made from scrap metal or a gown stitched together from old curtains, the Waste to Art competition invites people to imagine new possibilities from everyday materials.

Resource Recovery spokesperson Cr Michelle Byrne said the introduction of the new Wearable Art category aims to highlight the issue of textile waste, one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally.

“Each year, Australians send over 200,000 tonnes of clothing to landfill,” Cr Byrne said.

“This new category is a fun and powerful way to raise awareness about clothing and textile waste.

“Entrants are encouraged to think creatively and push the boundaries of traditional fashion - surprise us with how you transform unexpected items into bold, expressive, and

wearable works of art.

“The goal is to spark a conversation about the waste we create in daily life and ways materials can be reused or repurposed. That could mean donating or selling items in good condition, repairing or upcycling into something new, or recycling items properly.”

Participants in the Wearable Art category will showcase their designs during a live runway parade at the exhibition opening at Gatakers Artspace on Saturday 15 November. All garments must be safe to wear and modelled by someone provided by the entrant.

Across all categories, artworks must be made primarily from items destined for landfill or sourced from op shops, tip shops, or second-

hand stores. Judges will assess entries on creativity, durability, and demonstration of reuse and repurposing.

A $5,000 prize pool in Buy Local Gift Cards is up for grabs, thanks to the generous support of sponsors Hyne Timber, Cleanaway, the Reuse and Recycle Group, and Nugrow.

Entry is free and open to Wide Bay residents. All artworks will be displayed at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough from 15 November 2025 to 3 January 2026. The People’s Choice Award will be announced at the close of the exhibition.

YOUR FITNESS YOUR FUTURE

LOCAL photographers aged 50 and over are invited to capture the joy of retirement in this year’s Seniors Photographic Competition, with entries now open as part of the 2025 Seniors Month celebrations on the Fraser Coast.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls de Waard said the competition was a popular part of the region’s annual Seniors Month, which runs from 1 to 31 October.

The competition encourages participants to reflect on what retirement means to them and how they enjoy life in the Fraser Coast region.

It aims to highlight the diversity of experiences and the positive aspects of ageing through a creative lens.

The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Enjoying Retirement on the Fraser Coast’, so organisers are looking for photos that celebrate retirement – whether that’s spending time with family, enjoying a favourite hobby, or embracing a new adventure.

Submissions can be taken at home, in the community or out and about exploring the region.

There are two categories to

enter:

• Family and Friends

• Hobbies and Interests

Each photo must be in colour (no black and white), submitted digitally, and must include at least one person over the age of 50.

The photographer must also be 50 or older. Images should be clear, well-composed, and align with the theme.

All entries will be displayed at the Over 50’s Lifestyle Expo on Friday 3 October, with prizes awarded for 1st and 2nd place in each category, along with an Encouragement Award.

TOOGOOM residents will soon have a safer and easier way to get around their neighbourhood, with a new concrete footpath about to be built along Kingfisher Parade.

Construction starts next week on the 1.3-metre-wide path on Kingfisher Parade, between Morris Road and Sea Beach Way, which will connect existing footpaths and improve access to the local bus stop.

The path is expected to benefit people of all ages, including school children, seniors, and families, by providing safer and more convenient pedestrian access through the area, especially during busy times or adverse weather conditions.

The project forms part of Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing pedestrian infrastructure across the Fraser Coast, with several other path upgrades also underway or planned for nearby communities.

The Kingfisher Parade footpath is designed to be durable and low maintenance, built to withstand the coastal environment while providing a comfortable surface for walkers, prams, and mobility aids.

Community consultation was

undertaken during the planning stages to ensure the project met local needs and minimised disruption to residents.

Informational signage will be installed near the worksite to keep the community informed about progress throughout the construction period.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Michelle Govers said the new footpath would be a welcome improvement for the Toogoom community.

“We know how important footpaths are for daily lifewhether you’re staying active, heading to the shops or catching up with neighbours,”

Cr Govers said.

“This new footpath in Kingfisher Parade is a great addition for local residents,

especially those walking to the bus stop or enjoying the outdoors.

“It will fill in a missing link in the Toogoom footpath network, essentially creating a continuous path from the boat ramp all the way to the convenience store.”

The works include new kerb ramps, sections of driveway reconstruction, tree removal to allow for safe installation and turfing of disturbed areas.

Standard traffic and pedestrian management will be in place during the construction period.

Work is due to begin in August and is expected to be complete by the end of September 2025, weather permitting.

THE ROTARY Club of Hervey Bay is marking 70 years of community service, both locally and internationally, with a special anniversary dinner planned for September 24, 2025, at the Hervey Bay Golf Club.

Chartered on May 24, 1955, with sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Maryborough, the club began its journey with 23 charter members.

The inaugural president was Mr Arthur Proctor, a coal retailer, and the first secretary was chemist Mr Richard Winterflood.

The first meeting took place at the Hervey Bay Hotel during the 50th anniversary year of Rotary International.

Since then, the club has built a proud legacy of service, initiating a wide variety of impactful projects.

Over the years, members entertained visiting ship officers at the Urangan Pier, transported blood donors to Maryborough Hospital, erected fences around historical graves on Woody Island, and even built a house in a weekend to raise funds for the Pialba PCYC.

These activities reflect the club’s strong commitment to addressing both immediate and long-term community needs.

In 1991, the club funded and helped build the Fraser Island Ambulance Station at

Happy Valley, which remains operational today.

A major fundraising highlight was the Rotary Living Expo, previously known as the Garden Expo, which ran until 2019.

Funds from this event supported the construction of Rotary House at Hervey Bay Hospital – a facility providing emergency accommodation for families of admitted patients.

This facility continues to offer crucial support during difficult times. The club’s work has evolved with the times, adapting to the needs of the local community while maintaining a strong connection to Rotary’s global mission.

In recent years, they’ve extended their outreach to support families affected by domestic violence, contributed to emergency relief during natural disasters, and fostered youth development through scholarships and mentoring programs.

The Rotary Z Bus in Hervey Bay offers safe sleeping spaces for those in need, operating at Apex Park on Friday and Saturday nights. The bus features eight private pods, each with a bed and camp toilet, Boarding from 8pm10pm.

The Hervey Bay City Club is involved in many projects: their overseas efforts include

Nepal, India, New Guinea and Vanuatu (Santos).

Locally, ongoing youth and community projects include the Hard Yakka Boot Camp for Youth, Community Flights, ZBus emergency sleeps, The Science and Engineering Challenge and Yoorana Domestic Violence Support and Care.

The club is deeply engaged in Rotary youth exchange programs (YEP), The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program (RYDA), volunteers annually at the Local Ambulance Wheel, and provides flood relief and emergency assistance as community needs arise.

Today, the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay (following a 2016 merger with the original Hervey Bay Club) continues to serve through a mix of local and international projects.

Alongside sister clubs, they now manage the Maryborough Markets under Rotary Fraser Coast Events, raising vital funds for the region.

The club is calling on past members who would like to be part of the 70th anniversary celebrations to reach out by emailing secretary@ rotaryherveycity.org.

This milestone is a testament to decades of service, driven by a dedicated group of Rotarians

Ingenia Lifestyle Hervey Bay

HERVEY Bay’s lifestyle offering for seniors just reached a whole new level, with the grand opening of Ingenia Lifestyle’s spectacular new multi-million-dollar clubhouse, The Pavilion.

In a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local leaders, residents, and Ingenia Lifestyle representatives, excitement filled the air as the vibrant over-50s community celebrated the launch of their third dedicated communal facility — a major milestone in the estate’s ongoing growth.

The Pavilion now joins the recently refurbished Eagles Nest clubhouse and The Hangar community space, expanding a world-class suite of amenities designed to foster connection, wellbeing and active living.

Ingenia Lifestyle’s Head of Development for Queensland, Adam Forrester, said the new facility reflects the company’s commitment to redefining retirement living.

“‘The Pavilion is part of our continued investment in Hervey Bay and we are excited for residents to enjoy all that it has to offer,” Mr Forrester said.

“We believe in creating communities that encourage

connection and support a healthy, active lifestyle, and great amenities are an essential part of this.”

From a gym and golf simulator to a resort-style pool, steam room and sauna, The Pavilion boasts a luxury lifestyle experience. Residents also have access to a lounge, bar, multipurpose room, and a function-ready BBQ area — all tailored to bring people together.

“While the offering differs slightly across each of the three facilities, there is a common thread and that is the focus on how each facility can enhance the resident experience, creating places where people want to live,” Mr Forrester

added.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour, who attended the launch, said the space is about more than just bricks and mortar.

“It’s a space where residents gather to watch State of Origin, play bridge or do aqua therapy. These facilities provide the options for a wider range of lifestyle opportunities,” he said.

Long-time resident Graham Henry agreed, describing The Pavilion as “absolutely stunning” and a powerful contributor to health and wellbeing.

“It’s everything you’d want for an enjoyable life,” Mr Henry said.

I’M OFTEN asked about what to look for when investing in commercial property in the Hervey Bay region.

With our growing population, strong tourism, and ongoing infrastructure development, Hervey Bay presents compelling opportunities for both seasoned and novice commercial investors.

Here are some key considerations to help ensure you find the right property for you.

As the old adage goes, location, location, location is critical. Proximity to amenities, main roads, and areas with high foot or vehicle traffic can significantly impact a property’s value and tenant appeal.

The zoning of the property is also important as this will determine the types of businesses that are permitted to operate from the property under the current town planning scheme.

Secondly, tenant quality and lease terms are crucial. A long-term lease with a

reputable, financially sound tenant provides stable income and reduces vacancy risk.

A well-constructed lease ensures the tenant provides appropriate security such as a bond or personal guarantees, allows for annual increases and clearly outlines who is responsible for minor maintenance and servicing

of plant and equipment and paying outgoings such as council rates and body corporate fees.

Thirdly, check the physical condition of the property is appropriate given the age of the property.

Has the property been well maintained, had any roof leaks, how old is the airconditioning etc?

Also, consider properties

with adaptable layouts that could suit alternative uses in the future.

Finally, make sure the property meets your investment goals and budget. You may prefer a low maintenance property with a steady income or you might be looking for a property that is under-rented with upcoming lease reviews or alternatively, a property with potential to increase the rental yield and overall value with structural or cosmetic improvements.

Hervey Bay’s commercial property market is dynamic, offering attractive rental yields and capital growth however, it is important to engage with experts such as valuers, solicitors, accountants and commercial property specialists, undertake due diligence and understand the local market in order to mitigate your risk and maximise your returns.

BIRDSONG and feathers filled the air in Maryborough as the Hervey Bay Bird Club hosted its biggest event yet — the 10th Annual Bird Expo and Sale — attracting hundreds of enthusiasts and breeders from across Queensland and beyond.

An estimated 500 visitors passed through the doors, greeted by over 1,000 birds on display and a bustling market of avian accessories.

From nesting boxes and bird toys to seed mixes and health supplements, the Expo offered a paradise for pet bird owners and serious breeders alike.

“This year’s vendor numbers by far is the largest in our ten years,” organisers said, proudly noting the milestone.

The event attracted ornamental bird breeders from across Queensland and as far as Northern NSW, with

many making the most of the opportunity to exchange knowledge, connect with fellow breeders, and introduce new bloodlines into their aviaries.

“This is an opportunity for breeders to gain new bloodlines and discuss new developments in the bird world including conservation,” organisers said.

Conservation was a key talking point, with many attendees focused on the important role breeders play in protecting endangered species.

The Golden-shouldered Parrot — a native Queensland bird whose wild habitat continues to shrink — is one such example thriving in captivity thanks to dedicated breeders.

But it wasn’t just about the birds — the event brought a welcome boost to the Fraser Coast economy.

Hundreds of visitors stayed

in the region for several days, booking local accommodation and enjoying the area’s hospitality.

“Our club uses the Expo as an opportunity to raise funds and a substantial proportion of this is saved and donated to local organisations,” organisers added.

This year, the club donated $1,000 to the Fraser Coasters Wheelchair Basketball Club and continues to maintain aviaries at two local aged care facilities.

“This is the largest bird Expo this year in Qld and hopefully will continue to be a draw card to the region,” the club said.

The Hervey Bay Bird Club also maintains a permanent presence at the Koala Markets every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month.

HERVEY Bay is set to welcome a life-changing housing development aimed at giving locals living with disability the freedom and independence they deserve.

With more than 11,000 Fraser Coast residents living with serious disability and limited access to specialist housing, Accessible Homes Australia (AHA) – winner of Queensland’s 2024 Telstra Business Award for Building Communities – is bringing its first regional Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) project to life right here in the Bay.

Construction is well underway on Urraween Village, a purposebuilt community featuring 12 thoughtfully designed villas for NDIS participants with highsupport needs.

Located in the heart of Hervey Bay, the development addresses

a pressing gap in the Wide Bay region, where disability prevalence is among the highest in Queensland.

According to the ABS, 10.8% of Fraser Coast residents need daily assistance with core activities –nearly double the state average.

“We’re seeing too many people in the Fraser Coast stuck in hospitals, aged care, or unsuitable housing because there simply aren’t enough SDA homes available,” said AHA

Founding Director and CEO Perry Cross AM. “The good news is there’s a funding model through the NDIS to support this – but the homes need to be there. That’s the gap we’re helping to close.”

The statistics are sobering – as of late 2022, the entire region had fewer than 100 SDA dwellings, with just 31 in Hervey Bay. “This level of under-supply is forcing people to relocate or remain in group homes

or facilities that don’t suit their needs,” Perry said.

Urraween Village will feature two-bedroom villas with voicecontrolled air-conditioning, smart home automation, duress systems, accessible bathrooms and adaptable rooms for carers or guests. Shared facilities will include a swimming pool with hoist, rehabilitation gym, sensory garden and multimedia lounge – all within flat walking distance to shops, hospitals and the Hervey Bay Rail Trail.

“This region deserves the same housing innovation seen in our major cities,” said AHA co-founder Tom Ray. “With demand outpacing supply, we’re calling on eligible participants, or their carers, to reach out early.”

Applications for the 12 villas are now open, with completion expected in early 2026.

SCREEN Fraser Coast is calling for local stories highlighting regional history and culture.

Screen Fraser Coast is putting a call out to the community to help uncover and share the stories that define our region, as part of the national digital storytelling initiative, Yesterday Stories.

The project aims to create a lasting cultural record that will resonate with current and future generations.

In partnership with Yesterday Stories, Screen Fraser Coast will help develop and showcase short films based on local stories – shining a spotlight on the people, places, and moments that have shaped the Fraser Coast.

These digital stories will reflect the character, resilience, and spirit of the region’s people.

“We’re inviting residents to share personal and community stories connected to key themes that reflect our diverse heritage,” says Amy

Friesen, Co-Chair of Screen Fraser Coast. “These include migrant experiences, Indigenous culture, agricultural life, family heritage, and stories linked to local sites and landmarks.”

Selected stories will be developed into professionally produced short films and featured on the Yesterday Stories app and website, which allows users to explore regional history through digital storytelling linked to real-world locations.

The films will remain accessible online and serve as a resource for educators, visitors, and community members alike.

Samantha Gould, Co-Chair of Screen Fraser Coast, says the project offers a rare opportunity to preserve and promote the Fraser Coast’s unique identity.

“These themes are woven into the fabric of our region. From farming families to First Nations culture, migration stories to historic

landmarks – they tell us who we are. This project ensures those stories are not only remembered but celebrated.”

The project is proudly supported by the 2025 Gambling Community Benefit Fund, allowing Screen Fraser Coast to engage local voices and honour the region’s rich and diverse history.

Community members, schools, historical groups, and organisations are encouraged to get involved.

To submit a story idea or express interest, email: sam@ screenfrasercoast.com.au

“This is your chance to be part of a nationally recognised storytelling initiative,” adds Friesen.

“If your story reflects the heart of the Fraser Coast – we want to hear it.”

HERVEY Bay Airport is set to become even more accessible and passenger-friendly, with the arrival of a new Aviramp this week.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the mobile boarding ramp will assist with safer and more comfortable boarding and disembarkation, enhancing safety and the overall customer experience at the Airport.

“The timing couldn’t be better, coming off the back of Jetstar’s decision to increase capacity on Hervey Bay services, which is delivering more than 38,000 extra low fare seats a year and making it easier than ever to explore the stunning Fraser Coast,” he said.

“The joint funding by Fraser Coast Council and Jetstar is another step forward for our growing airport and region.

“We’re always looking at ways to improve the passenger experience at Hervey Bay Airport, and this new

equipment will make boarding easier and safer for everyone.”

Cr Seymour said Aviramp’s design also allows for faster and more efficient passenger movement, which could assist with on-time performance and reduce delays during boarding and disembarkation.

“This is a practical and passengerfocused addition that supports the continuing growth of our airport and our region,” Cr Seymour said.

Jetstar’s Chief Operating Officer, Matt Franzi says the new ramp will offer several benefits for all passengers.

“Benefits include enhanced safety, improved turnaround efficiency and a more inclusive and dignified boarding experience, especially for our passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs).”

The introduction of the Aviramp also reflects a broader commitment to improving regional transport

infrastructure.

By investing in better facilities, Hervey Bay Airport is positioning itself as a more competitive and attractive destination for travellers and airlines alike.

Airport staff have undergone training to ensure smooth and effective operation of the new ramp, with support systems in place to help passengers adapt to the updated boarding process.

The upgrade is expected to improve accessibility for elderly travellers, families with young children, and people using mobility aids, further enhancing the airport’s appeal.

Hervey Bay Airport offers regular commercial services to Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, K’gari and Lady Elliot Island.

The Aviramp will be in use for Jetstar flights this week at Hervey Bay Airport.

AFTER nearly 20 years of dedicated service, Dale Hansen has stepped down as Principal of Carinity Education Glendyne in Hervey Bay, leaving a lasting legacy of growth and hope.

What began in 1998 as a grassroots mentoring initiative for just five teenage boys facing tough challenges has grown into a thriving Special Assistance School, largely due to Dale’s inspiring leadership. Early classes were held on a pineapple farm in Nikenbah, focusing on hands-on skills like farm work and welding.

Today, Glendyne offers a comprehensive education program that continues to transform lives.

Dale joined Glendyne in 2005 when the school was still developing.

With a strong background in engineering, vocational

training, business, and IT, he quickly moved from deputy leadership to Principal, a role he held for 14 impactful years.

Reflecting on the early days, Dale said, “We were designing programs and buildings from scratch. There were many challenges, but we had a team willing to roll up their sleeves and figure it out.”

Living onsite with his family for seven years, Dale helped nurture both the school’s infrastructure and its unique community spirit.

Under his guidance, Glendyne became coeducational, gained Registered Training Organisation status, and earned recognition as a Special Assistance School. What motivated Dale most was witnessing student transformation.

“What brought me back every year is seeing students change,

develop and grow into mature young people with fantastic goals,” he said. “Graduation day is my favourite — students who once gave up on education are now graduating with QCEs, apprenticeships, or university pathways.”

One highlight for Dale was reconnecting with graduates thriving in the community.

“I saw a former student fishing with his own son — now breaking the cycle of disadvantage. That’s success. That’s why we do what we do.”

Looking back, Dale feels proud and humbled. “Every person here, whether for two days or 20 years, has played a role in what Glendyne has become. We see students as real people, not failures, and help them reach their hopes and dreams.”

THE 2025–26 Queensland State Budget delivers significant healthcare investments that will benefit residents of the Fraser Coast, alongside broader statewide improvements.

The commitment a record $33.1 billion to the health system which is an increase of over 10% from the previous year is aimed at easing pressure on hospitals, expanding services, and addressing frontline workforce shortages.

How will this budget benefit the Fraser Coast residents?

The key is that the Queensland government must ensure that this funding delivers more services to the residents now.

While the Maryborough and Hervey Bay Hospitals are not listed for full rebuilds, they will benefit from statewide workforce recruitment and upgrades to existing services designed to reduce wait times and improve local access to care.

In theory, Fraser Coast residents will have shorter travel distances for specialist care and less time waiting in emergency departments.

Funding allocated to Surgery Connect, will reduce waiting times for elective surgeries.

However, we need to ensure that we strive to reduce waiting times for outpatient appointments.

Mental health services also receive a boost, with

funding allocated for new mental health and wellbeing programs.

This is particularly important in regional areas like the Fraser Coast, where access to mental health care has traditionally lagged behind metropolitan centres.

In addition to hospitals, the government has committed to recruiting

and training thousands of healthcare workers.

This will improve staffing levels at local facilities, reducing burnout among frontline staff and enhancing the quality of care.

The other key focus is retention of the existing workforce.

For families, the continuation of the free flu vaccination program means better protection from preventable illnesses.

Investment in digital health technologies will improve coordination of care between Hervey Bay, Maryborough, and Brisbane specialists, giving residents faster diagnoses and better follow-up.

While the Fraser Coast will also benefit from road upgrades, cost-of-living support, and housing initiatives, healthcare stands out as the key focus in this year’s budget. Currently, I remain optimistic that these investments can improve access and equity in health services on the Fraser Coast.

WHEN Hervey Bay resident

Helen Schmidt sat at her husband’s hospital bedside last year, she found herself in a situation no family should ever face, forced to make lifeor-death decisions without access to critical medical imaging.

Her husband, Douglas, had suffered a diabetic coma and was unconscious in the Intensive Care Unit at Hervey Bay Hospital.

For eight days, he remained on life support, experiencing constant seizures, while doctors tried to assess whether his brain was still functioning.

An MRI scan could have provided the answer. But over the long weekend, and the days that followed, it simply wasn’t available.

“I was told there were not enough MRI appointments available each week for public patients at IMED across the road, and there was already a backlog,” Helen recalls. “They couldn’t take him off the machines to move him, it was too risky.”

Helen is now leading a petition calling for a fully funded MRI machine to be installed directly at Hervey Bay Hospital.

She is joined in her campaign by State Member for Hervey Bay, David Lee, who has thrown his full support behind the call for better access to diagnostic services for the region.

“Doctors didn’t know how to treat

him because they couldn’t confirm the extent of the brain damage,” Helen said.

“We were left with no answers. Eventually, after eight days, we made the decision to turn off life support, thinking he may not survive.”

Resonance Imaging (MRI) are referred to local private imaging practices at no cost to them.

“Inpatients are prioritised according to clinical urgency and typically receive their scan within one to three days, while urgent or emergency cases are accommodated

this service in the future.”

Helen emphasises that her campaign is not about blaming the hospital or its staff.

She wants it known that the care her husband received was excellent.

Miraculously, Douglas did survive. His recovery was slow and uncertain, with weeks of confusion and memory loss.

But as Helen explains, “We nearly lost him, maybe unnecessarily. If there had been an MRI in the hospital, we could have made an informed decision much sooner.”

A Queensland Health spokesperson has advised that “Patients requiring a Magnetic

the same day.”

“Outpatients are also referred to private facilities free of charge, this prevents patients having to travel outside the region for MRI services.

“We have been working with Queensland Health for some time to advocate for the need for an MRI machine in Hervey Bay to meet service needs.

“We continue to work through the feasibility of this and hope to offer

“The ICU doctor, she was incredible. But she was just as limited as we were.

“She told me directly, without an MRI, we don’t know what’s happening in his brain.”

Her personal experience was the spark that led to the petition, and Helen is determined to ensure no other family has to make the same impossible choice.

Helen’s connection with State Member for Hervey Bay David Lee began through Douglas’s involvement with Rotary and community fundraising.

Over time, the two families became

close. When David visited the couple during Douglas’s illness, Helen shared her story, and he listened.

“David has taken this seriously from the beginning. He has been a real support, and I’m so grateful he’s backing the petition.”

David Lee, who is an honorary member of Rotary and a vocal advocate for regional health equity, said the petition aligns with the broader goal of improving emergency and diagnostic services in the Fraser Coast.

“Installing an MRI machine at Hervey Bay Hospital isn’t just a medical upgrade, it’s a matter of timely, lifesaving care,” David said.

Douglas passed away earlier this year from an unrelated condition, but Helen’s mission continues in his memory.

“This is for every other family who might face what we did. If we had an MRI at Hervey Bay Hospital, we could have known sooner. Families deserve that,” Helen reiterated.

The petition for an MRI machine at the Hervey Bay Hospital, directed to The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, can be accessed using the QR code shown here.

At the time of printing the petition has attracted over 2,300 signatures.

HERVEY Bay’s property market is showing no signs of slowing, in fact it is gaining momentum.

In Q1 2025, the median house price reached $722,500 and units hit $520,000, representing 11.3% and 16.4% year-onyear growth.

Despite this price growth, sales volumes were down by 23% for houses and 37% for units .

This is a clear sign that buyer demand continues to outstrip supply. With fewer properties hitting the market and more buyers competing for them, upward pressure on prices has intensified.

This tightening of stock between Q1 2024 and Q1 2025 has fuelled one of the strongest seller’s markets Hervey Bay has seen in recent years.

That trend has continued into mid-2025, with median house prices reaching around $723,000 and units at approximately $525,000, reflecting healthy double-digit annual growth.

Another view over the 12 months to July 2025 puts the median house value at $865,815, up 15.4%, while rental yields remain strong with a median weekly rent of $639.

Zooming out, the Wide Bay region, which includes Hervey Bay, has recorded some of the highest price growth in Australia over the past five years.

CoreLogic data shows 65% to 75% growth, with no signs of softening in lifestyle-led migration. Buyers from capital cities continue to pursue value, space, and coastal amenity, all of which

Hervey Bay delivers in spades.

One of the clearest indicators of the region’s value proposition is the performance of Esplanade and oceanview properties. A recently listed threebedroom beachfront unit in Urangan is priced at $1.35 million, a premium by Hervey Bay standards, yet significantly more affordable than comparable assets on the Sunshine Coast, where beachfront apartments regularly exceed $2 to $3 million.

This price differential makes Hervey Bay highly attractive to downsizers, investors, and sea-changers seeking beachfront living without the capital city

price tag. With limited stock in prime coastal locations and ongoing interstate migration, demand for ocean-adjacent property is expected to remain high.

The rental market also remains tight, with vacancy rates below 1% and ongoing upward pressure on rents, supporting solid yields for investors and reinforcing the area’s investment credentials.

In short, all indicators; price growth, buyer competition, rental strength, and regional demand, point to a market that is not only holding firm, but still rising. Hervey Bay is not slowing down. It is just getting started.

ELI Waters has emerged as one of the region’s most convenient and family-friendly suburbs, offering a strong blend of lifestyle appeal and reliable property growth.

Framed by freshwater lakes, green spaces, and wide residential streets, the suburb delivers a peaceful yet well-connected living environment. Its popularity is underpinned by proximity to schools, shopping centres, medical services, and recreational facilities , all close at hand.

With a population now exceeding 4,000, Eli Waters has over 1,800 homes, primarily on generous blocks.

Newer estates have introduced a mix of modern brick houses, duplexes, and villas, attracting a broad crosssection of buyers.

Families are well served, with Xavier Catholic College and multiple early learning centres nearby.

For daily convenience, Eli Waters Shopping Centre, Stockland Hervey Bay, and the Hervey Bay Golf Course are all within easy reach.

In real estate terms, the suburb has delivered steady growth over the past five years, with house prices increasing by 35–40%.

The current median sits around $630,000, with lakeside and larger homes achieving higher results. Most properties sell within 30 days, reflecting ongoing buyer interest and limited supply.

Eli Waters also performs well as an investment area, offering consistent rental returns and a stable tenant base. What sets the suburb apart is its balance of practicality and calm, walkable streets, green space, and essential services all within minutes. It is a suburb where liveability meets long-term value.

As a market-leading agency working in Eli Waters each week, we know the confidence this suburb inspires. Whether you are upgrading, downsizing, or entering the market, Eli Waters remains a smart and dependable choice.

HERVEY Bay is at the heart of Queensland’s preventive health revolution, with the QCWA Country Kitchens program leading the charge to improve local food and nutrition literacy.

Thanks to a $43 million investment by the Queensland Government through Health and Wellbeing Queensland, programs like QCWA Country Kitchens will continue empowering residents with skills to make healthier food choices.

Since 2021, more than 350,000 Queenslanders have embraced Health and Wellbeing Queensland programs—and Hervey Bay is no exception.

Locally, the program delivers hands-on workshops teaching residents to eat more fruit and vegetables, cook at home, reduce sugar in drinks, check portion sizes, and move more every day.

Run by QCWA members— trusted community figures— these workshops are inclusive, practical, and relatable.

The local QCWA branch plays a key role, connecting with the community and sharing recipes, tips, and updates to support healthier living.

Dr Robyn Littlewood, Chief Executive of Health and Wellbeing Queensland, praised the results, “Prevention isn’t a quick fix — it takes commitment, partnership, respect and time — but we are seeing results that I’ve never seen reported anywhere else in Australia.”

With nearly two in three adults and one in three children in Hervey Bay affected by overweight or obesity, QCWA Country Kitchens provides vital tools to reduce chronic disease risks. Its five key messages—eat more fruit and vegetables, cook

at home, be mindful of sugar in drinks, control portion sizes, and increase movement—are widely embraced.

Since 2021, broader preventive health investment has also supported initiatives like Deadly Choices, My health for life, and healthier school tuckshops across the Fraser Coast.

These programs have encouraged over 41,000 Queenslanders to log steps with the 10,000 Steps app and helped nearly 5,000 complete Deadly Choices 715 Health Checks.

For locals keen to get involved, QCWA Country Kitchens offers a welcoming environment where healthy lifestyle changes are supported by experienced volunteers. With renewed funding, Hervey Bay’s community kitchens are not just places to cook—they’re hubs of health, hope, and connection.

DUST off your eye patch, polish your peg leg and ready the rigging — the annual Fraser Coast Mobility Scooter and Wheelchair Convoy is setting sail with a pirate twist this year!

This year’s convoy will be held on Saturday 13 September, and all hearty participants are invited to dress themselves, their scooters and wheelchairs in their finest pirate gear.

Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor Sara Diana Faraj said the event was a fun and inclusive way to celebrate mobility, community and creativity.

“From Captain Jack Sparrow to classic Jolly Roger flags, we want to see vehicles transformed into sea-worthy vessels and participants dressed in their pirate best,” she said.

“The convoy is about fun and freedom, bringing together scooter and wheelchair users to raise awareness around safe mobility and celebrate the independence these vehicles provide.”

Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls de Waard said the Fraser Coast holds the Australian record with 176 in

the convoy, so this year we’re hoping to break our own record.

“We always see amazing displays of creativity, and it’s exciting to see how participants express themselves through their decorated vehicles and fun hats,” she said.

“Prizes are available for Largest Group, Best Decorated Scooter, Best Decorated Group and Best Decorated Individual.

Ms de Waard said the convoy will leave Scarness Park and head down the Esplanade, past the playground and skate park before returning to Scarness Park for live music and a free BBQ for participants.

“If you aren’t participating,

bring your family and friends to cheer the riders from the sidelines!

“No pre-registering is needed this year, but participants are encouraged to complete a registration form before the day and bring it to make check-in quicker.

“Registration opens at 9am at Scarness Park, across from the Beach House Hotel.”

Cr Faraj said we’d love to see community groups, retirement villages and aged care homes getting on board again this year as it’s a great opportunity for social connection and harmless pirate mischief.

THEY say life isn’t meant to be easy, and for Hervey Bay local Holly Fay, that has proven heartbreakingly true. But at nearly forty, with a list of challenges that could break anyone, Holly stands strong. Her story is one of survival, transformation, and raw courage—and now, she’s sharing it in her own words.

“I’ve been through adoption, addiction, domestic violence, a brain tumour, a car accident, and more,” Holly says. “But my story proves you can get back up no matter how bent life makes you.”

Born in Wagga Wagga and raised in Sydney’s Hawkesbury region, Holly was adopted at six weeks old. Her early years were happy—until a single comment at age four shifted something deep inside her. “I didn’t realise until later how much it shaped the walls I put up,” she reflects.

After her adoptive parents separated, Holly lived with her dad, who was battling terminal prostate cancer. From age ten, she cared for him while juggling school and work. “He was my hero,” she says simply. But by fourteen, things deteriorated.

Holly was living off tomato sauce and pepper sandwiches, trying to survive alone.

Her path into adulthood wasn’t easy. By sixteen, she was a mother. By nineteen, a wife, and soon after, a survivor of domestic violence. And through it all, the struggle to be seen, safe, and heard continued.

At just twenty-two, Holly was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour, a Ganglioglioma, after months of debilitating migraines.

Surgery saved her life, but came at a cost: long-term nerve pain, an acquired brain injury (ABI), and an

invisible fight with fatigue, OCD, and mental fog. “No one tells you what life is like after brain surgery,” she says. “The healing never really ends.”

But Holly didn’t stop. Instead, she started writing.

Her autobiography, A Little Bent, Not Broken, is a raw and honest account of her journey. “It’s written from lived experience. It’s real and unfiltered. I wrote it so people could feel seen.”

She hopes her story will ripple outward, reaching those struggling in silence. “I want others to know that you can rise too, no matter your past, your diagnosis, or what you’ve been through.”

Holly is also a fierce advocate for domestic violence awareness, particularly the importance of transferring protection orders when moving interstate—something she

learned too late. “I had no idea my AVOs didn’t follow me. No one told me. If I’d known, things could’ve ended differently.”

In 2020, a car accident nearly claimed her life, leaving her with a perforated bowel and a stoma bag. But like everything else, Holly fought.” She now lives with rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnoea, and chronic pain, but never lets those conditions define her.

Addiction was another battle— alcohol, her longest relationship. “I was a functional alcoholic,” she says. But her healing journey eventually led her away from substances and toward holistic wellness. Today, she’s a qualified Reiki Master, mindfulness coach, shadow coach and passionate about sound healing. Her business, Phoenix Flow, is a testament to her rebirth.

One of Holly’s greatest sources of pride is being a mum to four children, including her “miracle baby”—born just after her brain surgery. “That moment reminded me that life can still surprise you. That beauty can come even in the hardest chapters.”

Holly loves to spend time with her adoptive mother, who lives in aged care. Holly has now come full circle. The woman who once felt invisible is now sharing her story boldly, with power, purpose, and grace.

“We don’t get to choose the stories of our lives,” she says. “But we do get to choose what we do with them. This is mine—and it’s my legacy.”

A Little Bent, Not Broken is available on Amazon and Google Books. For hard copies, reach out directly to Holly via her Facebook page named after her book.

YOU MIGHT NEVER MEET THEM BUT YOU MIGHT HELP THEM STAY

Every home we sell, helps us to support the amazing work done by Fraser Coast Mates. A portion of each sale empowers the important work they do in the community we all share.

Fraser Coast Mates was formed in 2018 by a group of local business people who were concerned by the rise of debilitating mental health issues and rising suicide rates across our region.

They are a local organisation on the Fraser Coast that aims to build local awareness and grow conversations about mental wellbeing by bridging the gap between those suffering and the

local support services available and ultimately making progress for suicide prevention.

Their number one goal is to encourage mates to be better equipped to help their mates and colleagues in times of struggle by telling local stories, helping mates gain clarity around what services are available locally and coordinating community events.

Located on 45 hectares of gently undulating land complete with sweeping vistas of the Great Sandy Strait and Fraser Island, Fraser Vista is arguably the best new water and island view address on the Fraser Coast..

Situated within close proximity to village shops, local schools and Hervey Bay town centre, this is the perfect time to embrace a sea change or start your retirement dream on the Fraser Coast.
