COSY NIGHTS

IN A deeply moving gesture recognising decades of service and innovation in cancer treatment, the GenesisCare Cancer Centre in Hervey Bay has officially been named in honour of Professor Bryan Burmeister, one of Australia’s most respected figures in radiation oncology.

Professor Burmeister, who retired recently after a distinguished career spanning continents and countless clinical trials, was informed of the honour during a retirement celebration several months ago.

The announcement was made by Dr. Marie Burke, GenesisCare’s Medical Director for Queensland.

“I was completely surprised,” Professor Burmeister said of the naming.

“It was incredibly humbling and deeply meaningful.”

Originally trained in South Africa, Professor Burmeister transitioned into radiation oncology after initially showing an interest in surgery.

Drawn by the scientific and technological aspects of radiation medicine, he began specialising in

oncology in 1981. Since then, he has played a key role in pioneering cancer treatments, advancing clinical trials, and delivering care that has saved or extended the lives of thousands of patients.

“When I started training, the survival rate for major cancers was around 40%,’ he said. ‘Now, it’s flipped and more than 60% of patients survive. That progress has been extraordinary, and it keeps getting better.”

A staunch advocate for clinical research, Professor Burmeister has contributed to numerous trials, some successful, some not, but all vital to the evolution of cancer care. He has lectured and presented his work across the globe, having spoken on six continents.

Professor Burmeister has been actively involved in academic and research leadership throughout his career. Since 1997, he has served on the staff of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Queensland, where he has been dedicated to teaching and supervising research.

He has been an investigator on more than 25 clinical research projects, authored over 150 peerreviewed journal papers, and presented more than 30 proffered papers at scientific and medical conferences.

His significant contribution to the professional community includes holding high-profile roles such as President of the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group from 2007 to 2012, Deputy Chair of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee of the Cancer Council Queensland from 2008 to 2015, Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Melanoma Trials Group

from 2014 to 2017 and Deputy Chair of the Wide Bay Hospital and health Service Board from 2017 to 2021.

He has also served on numerous grant review panels and is a frequent manuscript reviewer for major oncology journals.

Throughout his career, Professor Burmeister has emphasised the importance of optimism and compassion in oncology.

“You have many failures, people who don’t survive,’ he said. ‘But then you have the spectacular successes, patients written off by others, who respond and go on to live amazing lives. Those moments keep you going.”

He also reflected on the future of cancer treatment, highlighting the transformative potential of AI and immunotherapy.

“AI is revolutionising how we predict radiation doses and personalise treatment. And immunotherapy, particularly when combined with radiation, is unlocking powerful new ways for the body to fight cancer itself’.”

Although officially retired, Professor Burmeister still contributes to the field through locum work in both Hervey Bay and Bundaberg. He continues to support the Fraser Coast region through his association with GenesisCare Fraser Coast and the Hervey Bay Hospital. He now splits his time between his home near Maryborough and a love for fishing, gardening, and restoring old furniture.

A lifelong learner and selfconfessed curious mind, he laughs as he recalls being fascinated by ants as a child, breaking open nests to study how they lived.

“Curiosity has always driven me,” he said.

“I still spend time googling things I come across, when I’m sitting in waiting rooms.”

The naming of the GenesisCare Cancer Centre after Professor Burmeister is not only a tribute to his lifetime of achievements but a reminder of the impact one dedicated individual can have on a community, a profession, and patients around the world.

Making Lives Better,

NOMINATIONS are now open for Maryborough’s Walk of Achievers, which this year honoured an awardwinning author, a pioneering health advocate, a leading leukemia researcher, and an

He added, “It’s a powerful

High-Rise Takeover FIGHT

THE URRAWEEN Pump Station upgrades are nearing completion, enhancing Hervey Bay’s water supply reliability, cutting energy costs, and boosting Council infrastructure resilience.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said more than $6 million is being invested in the project, which includes a new pump station building, upgraded pipework, a new switch room, and improved chemical storage at the Urraween Reservoir.

“The new infrastructure will allow treated water from the Takura Reservoir to be pumped directly to the Ghost Hill reservoirs without needing to pass through Urraween Reservoir,” Cr Seymour said.

“This saves on power by using existing pressure in the water network and ensures water stored at Urraween is available during peak demand.

“The new building will include systems to improve water quality, updated power and pump speed controls, and flood protection for the switchboard, addressing issues experienced during the March rain event. A backup generator will also be installed to keep water flowing during power outages.”

Cr Seymour said these upgrades are about delivering a more reliable, energyefficient water network designed for future demands.

“Council continues to invest in the planning and delivery of essential water and waste projects, and the Urraween Pump Station project is a priority water infrastructure project that supports our growing region.

“Aging infrastructure is currently being replaced in Maryborough and Craignish, and Council is in the process of procuring a consultant to do design work for the Fraser Coast Water Grid.

“The proposed grid will connect the Hervey Bay and Maryborough water supply schemes via a twoway pipeline and pumping stations, which will enable treated water to be transferred throughout the region.

“This will improve water security and reliability, maximise the use of our water sources and provide flexibility if one of the treatment plants is affected by plant failure, a natural disaster or planned maintenance.”

Works are expected to be completed by August 2025, weather permitting, with no disruptions to residents.

Council is calling on locals to roll up their sleeves and donate blood or plasma this winter as the Local Government Blood Drive kicks off and the Lifeblood Teams competition heats up!

Fraser Coast Regional

Councillor Paul Truscott said Council had proudly held ‘Top Team’ naming rights at the Hervey Bay Donor Centre for the past two years, with Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service emerging as strong contenders.

“Together, Fraser Coast Regional Council and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service have more than 400 active donors who’ve already made over 1150 donations this year—helping save over 3450

lives,” said Cr Truscott.

“Council has made 376 donations so far in 2025, putting us 203 ahead—but we know Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service are coming for the top spot!”

Fraser Coast Nursing Director for Critical Care Troy Fisher said blood donations were vital to help respond quickly in a medical emergency.

“At our hospitals, we see the impact of blood donation every single day,” he said. “It’s not just a resource, it’s a lifeline. Our patients rely on the generosity of donors to make recovery and survival possible.”

Lifeblood spokesperson Ruth Harrison said these teams are literally the lifeblood of our local donor centres, allowing them to meet local demand

and save more lives.

“Someone somewhere in Australia will need a blood donation every 18 seconds and we need the support of our Lifeblood Teams to ensure we can meet demand,” she said.

The Local Government Blood Drive is also underway, with councils across Queensland competing to see who can make the most donations.

Cr Truscott said the Fraser Coast has won the title two years in a row and is aiming for a hat-trick in 2025.

There are over 150 appointments available to donate at Hervey Bay Donor Centre over the next two weeks. Call 13 14 95 or visit www. donateblood.com.au.

CONSTRUCTION is underway on a new footpath in Urraween to make it safer and easier for people to walk to and from the Hervey Bay Hospital and nearby medical services.

Fraser Coast Mayor

George Seymour said the approximately 310-metre concrete footpath along the western side of Madsen Road would fill an important missing link between Urraween Road and Maike Drive.

“This is a busy area with two hospitals, two schools, specialist clinics and medical centres nearby. The new path will improve safety and access for everyone, especially people walking to appointments or catching the bus,” he said.

“It’s also a well-populated residential area, so providing good footpaths encourages healthy lifestyles and helps keep our neighbourhoods

connected.”

The $520,278 project is jointly funded by Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Australian Government’s Active Transport Fund. It is being delivered by local contractor Grand Civil and is expected to be completed by mid-August, weather permitting.

The work includes the construction of a 2.5 to 2.8 metre-wide concrete path, new kerb ramps, street trees, upgraded driveways, and improved drainage. Residents in the area were notified before works began, and safety measures are in place during construction.

The new pathway is part of a broader initiative to improve pedestrian infrastructure across the Fraser Coast. In recent years, Council has prioritised the development of accessible

walkways in high-traffic and growth areas, aiming to reduce dependence on vehicles and support low-impact travel options.

Council officers said this particular stretch of Madsen Road had been identified through community feedback and urban planning reviews as a priority area due to its proximity to key services and the volume of foot traffic it receives daily.

“Council is committed to improving footpaths across the region to help people to get to where they need to go,” Cr Seymour said.

“We know how important good footpaths are for families, people with mobility challenges and those who simply want to stay active and connected.

“It’s all part of our plan to build better communities together.”

Don’t miss out on a night that promises music, dance and heart – all in support of a great cause.

Z-PAC Theatre invites audiences on a wild ride from the absurd to the profound in a genre-defying double bill:

First, prepare for high-octane hilarity with Dr Fibjoy’s Amazing Theatrical Exclusion, directed by Jonathan Sharp.

Packed with physical comedy, masks, live music, and a touch of improvisation, this riotous show follows the outrageous Dr Fibjoy—a snake oil salesman turned storyteller— as he spins tales inspired by Eastern European folklore.

“This show is about the joy of live performance,” says Jonathan. “It’s unpredictable, messy, magical, and full of heart.”

Performed by an ensemble of young adult actors, the show delivers a colourful tapestry of characters and skits celebrating community, culture, and chaos. Whether you’re 9 or 90, you’ll leave smiling.

Then, shift gears for Demise: A Series of Tragic Tales, directed by Nicky Fernandes—a darkly comic collection of four short plays that explore trauma, human fragility, and the absurdity of existence.

“Demise tackles painful subjects with humour and empathy,” says Nicky. “It invites audiences to laugh, squirm, reflect—and confront what we often shy away from. It’s raw, real—and weirdly relatable”

From a lovesick hitman in

‘Sweet Comic Valentine’ to the twisted desperation of ‘Reasons Why You Should Eat Me’, the plays traverse decades and psyches. ‘Cancel My Appointments’ explores existential dread with bleak hilarity, while ‘Fishing’ lands an emotional punch beneath calm waters.

Together, Dr Fibjoy and Demise offer two strikingly different but equally captivating sides of theatre. Don’t miss this provocative show that will have you roaring with laughter one moment and catching your breath the next. Performances at Z-PAC Theatre run over three weekends from 15-31 August. Council has updated a range of policies that provide financial support and concessions to residents, pensioners, community groups, and businesses.

Mayor George Seymour said Council would support the community through grants and concessions valued at about $8.5 million in 2025/26.

“The updates to our policies help ensure Council’s grants and concessions remain fair, transparent and easy to access,” he said.

“Whether it’s a pensioner on a fixed income, a community group making a difference, or a business owner restoring a historic building, these policies are here to help.

“It’s about ensuring support reaches those who need it most.”

The updated policies include:

Financial Hardship Policy

– Support for ratepayers in genuine financial difficulty, including deferred payments and interest relief.

Pensioner Concession Policy

– Ongoing rate relief of up to $200 annually for eligible pensioners.

Water Charge Relief Policy

– Rebates for excess water use due to hidden leaks or ongoing medical needs, now extended to include leaks caused by

Council maintenance or construction.

Community Grants Policy

– Outlines how grants, donations and sponsorships are distributed to support local projects, events and initiatives, with updates for fairness and consistency.

Community Groups

Concession Policy – Ongoing concessions of up to 100 per cent on general rates and some utility charges for not-for-profit

groups delivering cultural, sporting, or welfare services.

Principal Place of Residence Policy – Ensures correct rates and charges are applied to homeowners’ main residences, not investment or rental properties.

Refurbishment Concession Policy – Provides rate and utility charge relief for commercial property owners upgrading heritage or significant buildings that must close during works.

“These updates reflect Council’s commitment to creating connected communities through our places, spaces and people,” Cr Seymour said.

Updated policy versions will soon be available at frasercoast.qld.gov.au/policies, and grant details at frasercoast. qld.gov.au/grants.

HERVEY Bay is currently observing a robust and highly competitive commercial property market, driven by our continued influx of population. People are drawn by our enviable coastal lifestyle and the region’s increasing infrastructure. This demographic shift is translating directly into sustained demand across various commercial sectors.

The industrial sector, in particular, remains tight. Vacancy rates are low, and there is high demand for affordable spaces. This reflects a strong underlying confidence from businesses looking to establish or expand their presence, driven by a growing local consumer base.

Our retail landscape is also evolving. While national trends see some retail facing challenges, Hervey Bay’s retail showroom precincts continue to thrive, and demand for convenience and food retail offerings is solid.

The office market has also demonstrated great resilience, with leasing rates and sale rates holding strong, underpinned by demand from the medical and health sectors. There’s a clear

Dr Amir has joined the team at Pialba GP!

demand for modern, welllocated office spaces that offer attractive amenities which is putting pressure on older tenancies to upgrade and re-modernise to meet market expectations.

However, Hervey Bay’s commercial property market is grappling with a significant shortage of stock, with new developments at an all-time

low. This shortage is a direct result of rising construction costs, soaring material costs, and persistent labour shortages making new projects prohibitively expensive or simply unfeasible.

Consequently, the pipeline of new commercial properties across most sectors in Hervey Bay has dwindled, leaving both investors looking to buy and businesses seeking to lease with significantly fewer options than ever before.

Despite these supply constraints, investor demand for commercial property in Hervey Bay continues to be strong, offering attractive yields compared to larger cities. Owner-occupier interest is also robust, though equally constrained by the limited options available. Looking ahead, the substantial new projects underway in Hervey Bay, including new infrastructure and residential expansions, will continue to fuel commercial demand.

This growth, combined with Hervey Bay’s relative affordability compared to other major coastal centres in Queensland, positions our region as a prime location for strategic commercial property investment. For both local businesses considering expansion and investors looking for long-term value, Hervey Bay’s commercial property market offers a promising, albeit challenging due to supply, outlook.

FRASER Coast residents are facing higher waste charges after the Queensland Government slashed the waste tax rebate provided to councils.

Mayor George Seymour said the Queensland Government’s cost-shifting would force Fraser Coast Regional Council to pass on $1 million in extra costs to local households this financial year alone, and more than $22 million over the next six years.

“The Queensland Government says the waste tax helps reduce landfill and support recycling, but they’re cutting funding before regional councils have the infrastructure or support to meet their waste reduction and recycling targets,” he said.

“We strongly support better recycling, and we have already invested $31 million in a new state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility in Maryborough, without a single dollar of support from the Queensland or Australian governments.

“Now we’re being asked to do more, with less, and pay more for it. That’s simply not fair to our community.”

The Local Government Association of Queensland is today launching a statewide #BinTheTax campaign, calling on the State Government to keep the waste levy rebate at 100 per cent until the current system is reviewed and adjusted to reflect the needs of regional Queensland.

Cr Seymour said the current one-size-fits-all approach ignores the real barriers faced by regional areas.

“Regional communities don’t have the same scale or access to recycling markets as the south-east corner. Yet we’re being held to the same targets, with far fewer resources,” he said.

“Removing this support

before those gaps are addressed just means more costs pushed onto ratepayers, or less funding for essential services like parks, libraries and community facilities.”

Fraser Coast Regional Council is urging the Queensland Government to maintain the rebate while it reviews the waste levy framework and to work in genuine partnership with regional councils.

“Let’s work together to reduce landfill, improve recycling and protect the environment, but do it in a way that’s fair and achievable for all Queenslanders,” Cr Seymour said.

A PASSIONATE educator turned accessibility advocate, Joanne is leading the charge for inclusion on the Fraser Coast—and now she’s inviting the community to join her for a truly unforgettable evening under the stars.

After more than 30 years in education, Joanne redirected her career toward advocacy following her own journey with vision loss. Diagnosed with pathological myopia as a child and later myopic macular degeneration, she was officially declared legally blind at age 53. But rather than slow down, Joanne stepped up.

Since then, she’s made it her mission to build a more inclusive world—founding the Fraser Coast Low Vision and Blind Community group, launching the Live Well with Vision Loss not-for-profit, and even creating innovative safety and awareness tools for those living with vision impairments.

Now known as The Vision Loss Mentor, Joanne offers support and guidance through small group sessions and one-on-one mentoring, helping others navigate life with vision loss with dignity, strength and hope.

This year alone has seen her attend Australia’s first Accessible Beauty Summit in Sydney, collaborate with Vision Australia on media campaigns and fundraising, and appear as a panelist at the Fraser

Coast ThriveAbility disability conference. Highlights include meeting global disability advocate Molly Burke and catching a wave in a surfing session led by 4x World Champion Matt Formston.

Joanne’s advocacy work is grounded in her unwavering belief in the power of education, mental and physical well-being, and community connection.

And now, she’s inviting the community to share in that vision at a very special fundraising event: will take place on Friday, 25 July at Thyme @ The Vineyard.

Guests will embark on a magical dining experience where they’ll be challenged to enjoy a gourmet meal

without sight—an immersive way to raise awareness and empathy, all while raising much-needed funds for local initiatives supporting the blind and low vision community.

“This year marks the 27th Fraser Coast Ability Awards and we’re proud to honour the people and stories that inspire positive change every day,” Cr Weiland said.

“Whether it’s through innovation, advocacy, arts, sport, or leadership - these awards shine a spotlight on those who lead by example and help create a community where everyone belongs.”

The 2025 awards will be held on Friday 19 September in the Brolga Theatre Foyer, with this year’s theme ‘Sparkle – shine bright in your community’ encouraging attendees to dress with flair while celebrating diversity and inclusion.

Cr Weiland said a refreshed awards structure and updated categories had been introduced following feedback from the Inclusive Access Advisory Committee.

WHAT began in September 2021 as a simple idea to encourage men to get out of the house and move has grown into a thriving community of connection, conversation, and camaraderie.

The Men’s Walk and Talk Hervey Bay, founded by Shane Bradbury, has now clocked up nearly 450 group walks and more than 7,000 individual participations.

“The goal was always to get people doing a bit of exercise, looking after their mental and physical health,” Shane said.

“It’s become a lot more of a social circle than I first expected, and that’s a good thing.”

The group walks twice a week, on Tuesday afternoons and on Thursday mornings, and new participants are welcomed regularly.

Some have stayed the course since the beginning, including three members who have now completed over Two-hundred and fifty walks each.

There are no fitness tests, just an open invitation.

“We have even got what we call the ‘slow coach group’ so that everyone, regardless of pace or ability, can feel comfortable,” Shane explained.

For some, the benefits go far

beyond the steps they take.

“A participant moved to town about a year ago. His wife had found her place in the community, but he was stuck at home,” Shane said.

“He came along for a walk, connected straight away, and hasn’t missed one since. That’s what this is about.”

Beyond walking, the group now participates in team events like the Sunshine Coast’s Kokoda Challenge, monthly brunch catch-ups, and other social activities, creating new opportunities for engagement, especially for those with health limitations.

“I think the older we get, the easier it is to fall into isolation,” Shane said.

“But being part of something, and being missed if you’re not there, that matters.”

The initiative has not only helped combat loneliness but also fostered a sense of belonging, purpose, and lasting friendships among its members. It has quietly changed lives, bringing men together in a way that feels natural, easy, and powerfully supportive.

The Men’s Walk and Talk Hervey Bay meets outside the Surf Club on Tuesdays at 5:15pm and Thursdays at 6:00am. New walkers are encouraged to come a few minutes early.

More details are available at menswalkherveybay.com.au

“It does the world good,” Shane said.

“Seeing someone smile, knowing you helped them find their place, that’s what keeps the fire burning.”

HERVEY Bay’s residential real estate market continues to demonstrate resilience, stability, and long-term growth potential, positioning the city as one of Queensland’s most sought-after coastal housing destinations.

Despite higher interest rates curbing borrowing capacity over the past year, the market has held firm, underpinned by lifestyle appeal, relative affordability, and consistent demand from southeast Queensland and interstate buyers.

The median house price now sits at approximately $722,500, representing an 11.3 per cent increase year-on-year, while the unit market has surged 16.4 per cent to around $520,000, driven by downsizers and investors seeking yield in a tight rental market.

At the forefront of activity are Hervey Bay’s high-performing agencies, who continue to dominate transaction volumes.

Their market reach and local insight not only shape vendor expectations but also serve as a guidepost for buyers navigating a market where well-priced listings still sell quickly, particularly in core suburbs.

Choosing the right agent is critical; experienced professionals reduce days on market, leverage real-time comparable sales, and access deep buyer databases.

Off-market success hinges on agents with insight, networks, and the skill to match the right buyer to your property.

In terms of short-term suburb performance, Wondunna leads the pack with 24.6 per cent annual growth, driven by strong demand for lifestyle acreage and proximity to schools.

has also emerged as a highdemand location, buoyed by its proximity to the hospital precinct, shopping centres, and new infrastructure. Median house prices in Urraween have climbed from $612,000 to $723,000 in the past 12 months alone, according to CoreLogic.

Looking over the past five years, Urraween has more than doubled in value, with house prices rising over 100 per cent in some cases; the result of medical and commercial expansion, a wave of new residents, and its central, elevated positioning.

Kawungan and Wondunna have also delivered strong five-year capital growth, supported by owner-occupiers and limited new land supply in comparable locations.

Recent government incentives are now adding fresh momentum.

The Queensland Government has increased the First Home Owner Grant to $30,000, eliminated stamp duty for eligible

first-home buyers, and launched the Boost to Buy shared-equity scheme. Federally, the Help to Buy initiative will roll out later this year, giving lower-income households an entry point with deposits as low as two per cent and government-backed equity support.

Meanwhile, leading economists continue to forecast at least one interest rate cut by the end of 2025, perhaps several, a shift that would boost borrowing power and return confidence to a broader group of buyers, particularly upgraders and investors.

With low vacancy rates, limited resale stock, and a steady flow of new residents, Hervey Bay’s market fundamentals remain sound.

For buyers and sellers alike, all signs point toward a renewed phase of growth as the city closes out 2025 with fresh tailwinds and strong foundations.

DUNDOWRAN, Dundowran Beach and Craignish, collectively dubbed Hervey Bay’s’ ‘Northern Beaches’, have taken vastly different paths over the past twelve months, yet all remain underpinned by steady population growth and a lifestyle premium that continues to lure Brisbane and interstate buyers. Dundowran still offers the classic semi-rural acreages, but its price curve has flattened after a post-pandemic surge. Core market data show the median house price sitting at $888,746 (February 2025), almost double its 2020 level, representing a five-year gain of 98 per cent. Over the most recent June-to-June cycle, however, values eased -2.6 per cent, suggesting buyers have become more selective and vendors more price-realistic. With just 1,085 residents recorded at the 2021 Census, turnover is thin, so it doesn’t take much to swing the headline numbers..

A few kilometres east, Dundowran Beach has stolen the limelight. Houses now command a median $1.18 million, a jump of 19.5 per cent in the past year and 78 per cent over five years, driven by prestige waterfront builds and a shortage of new land.

The suburb’s 2,299-strong population skews slightly older and wealthier than the regional average, a demographic now being courted by QM Properties’ 1,600-lot ‘Beachside’ master-planned estate. The staged project, already releasing two-hectare premium blocks from the mid-$500,000s, is set to reshape supply over the coming decade and underpin future infrastructure upgrades.

Craignish, stretching north-west along the esplanade, has been the quiet achiever.

Median house values reached $934,795 at the end of January 2025, up 90 per cent since 2020.

The most significant new supply here is a proposed relocatable-home park on Craignish Road, now before council. While modest in scale, it signals rising demand for affordable coastal downsizer options.

Across the northern beaches, low vacancy rates, limited resale stock and steady migration from the south-east corner continue to support prices, even as higher interest rates have taken some of the heat out of day-to-day bargaining power.

Scarcity, lifestyle and a pipeline of development keep the northern beaches on a medium-term growth footing, even if the next twelve months look calmer than the last five whirlwind years.

HERVEY Bay took centre stage in Queensland’s women’s rugby league calendar with a Gala Dinner followed by a thrilling BMD Premiership clash between the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Central Queensland Capras.

Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor

Sara Diana Faraj said Council was proud to sponsor such a high-profile event that not only celebrated elite women’s sport but also provided a welcome boost to local tourism.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to see top-tier women’s rugby league in our own backyard,” Cr Faraj said.

“It’s not just a thrilling sporting event, it’s a celebration of women’s sport, community pride,

and inspiration for the next generation of players on the Fraser Coast.

The game, held at Ralph Stafford Park – Home of the Hervey Bay RSL Seagulls, saw the Wynnum Manly Seagulls edge out the Central Queensland Capras with a close final score of 20-16.

Gates opened at 1pm with kick-off at 3pm.

Cr Faraj said the familyfriendly event also featured food vendors, a bar open from 2:30pm, and fun activities for all ages.

“This match marks a major milestone for the region, offering local fans and aspiring athletes a chance to witness elite women’s rugby league live,” she said.

“Hosting this premier match highlights our commitment to growing women’s sport and delivering exciting, high-calibre events for our community.”

The Gala Dinner offered guests the chance to dine alongside elite players and hear powerful stories of resilience, dedication, and success.

The evening featured guest speakers who shared exciting insights into the future of women’s rugby league, all while guests enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner.

YOUR skin is dry; itchy and red. Dermatitis is a common skin condition and many of you may have flares in winter.

This is because cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating can dry out the skin, making it more sensitive and irritated.

Symptoms include redness, dryness, and itchiness of the skin of varying severity.

It is not contagious, but it can be extremely uncomfortable.

The most common type of dermatitis is eczema (also called atopic dermatitis), but other types like contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis can also worsen in winter.

During winter, our skin loses moisture faster.

Long hot showers, harsh soaps, and cold winds can strip away the skin’s natural oils.

This leaves the skin dry and more prone to irritation. People who already have sensitive skin, asthma, or

allergies are more likely to experience flare-ups.

Thankfully, there are simple steps that can help manage dermatitis during winter:

Apply a thick, fragrance-

free moisturiser several times a day, especially after bathing. This helps lock in moisture and protect the skin barrier.

Choose soap-free cleansers and avoid harsh, fragranced skincare products.

Hot water can dry out the skin further.

Wear gloves when washing dishes or going outside in cold weather.

This can help add moisture to dry indoor air.

If your skin becomes very itchy, red, or cracked, it is important to see your GP for a review to confirm diagnosis and to ensure there is not a secondary skin infection.

With the right care, most people can keep dermatitis under control through winter.

Minor changes to your skincare routine can make an enormous difference in keeping your skin healthy and comfortable during the colder months.

AT 48, NATASHA Webber is living a life that reflects strength, resilience, and a deep connection with animals, especially horses. She works at Pet ‘n’ Produce Supplies & Saddlery, a role she loves and that keeps her fit and active.

Natasha moved to Hervey Bay in 2007 with her partner Hayden, after falling in love with him at age 26. They met in Queenstown at the iconic Winnebago’s bar and have been inseparable ever since, married now for ten years, together for twenty-two.

Their son, Jamie, recently finished school and started a Heavy Diesel Apprenticeship with Absolute Diesel Services, making them proud parents. “We’ve always included Jamie in adult conversations and life decisions. It’s helped shape him into the grounded young man he is today,” Natasha says.

Born in Westport on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island but raised in Karamea. Natasha’s early years were hard. Her parents separated when she was five or six, and the memories she does have of them are not easy because of the passing of her little brother at just three years old. Several other family losses in quick succession clouded her childhood memories.

“I was six when my uncle died by suicide. At that age, I didn’t understand. But later, as others passed, I understood and saw the pain behind such decisions. It’s so sad, if they had only reached out and asked for help, they would probably still be here today.”

At nine, she moved to Christchurch to live with her mum. Natasha remembers her childhood fondly and recalls push biking or walking everywhere.

Horses were always a source of joy. She began lessons at ten, saving her own pocket money to pay for them. Ironically, she’s allergic to horses, but that didn’t stop her. “A doctor once asked if I could do something else instead of horses, I was not impressed!” she chuckles.

Natasha’s first job, back in Christchurch, was pumping petrol.

“Back then, it was full service on the forecourt. We’d check oil, tyres, and clean windscreens. We did it all.”

Today, the pair own five horses: Jarrah, Coco, Leo, Anzac, and Milo. Her main horse, Jarrah, is her trail and cowboy racing companion.

“There’s something about the bond you build with a horse,” Natasha reflects. “It’s not physical, it’s mental. You think it, and they do it.” That bond is rare, but she’s felt it twice, first with Zac, a riding school horse when she was 13, and again with

Sid, when she worked as a Trail Riding Guide at Moonlight Stables in Queenstown, a sprawling eighthundred-acre deer farm.

When Natasha was about six months pregnant, she and Hayden decided Queenstown was too expensive to raise a family. They moved to Hervey Bay and met the late and great Norman McLean. In 2015, the couple tied the knot at Susan River Homestead Resort. “It was magical,” she recalls. “We rode off on our horses for our wedding photos.”

A long-time horse lover and community builder, Natasha is a cofounder of Southern Cross Extreme Cowboy Racing on the Fraser Coast. The sport combines horsemanship, speed, and obstacle challenges.

“It all came to fruition thanks to the assistance of the committee of the Burrum District Active Riders. Now,

the group has over 200 members.”

Her dedication to the sport and the promotion of it was recognised in 2024 when she was inducted into the Extreme Cowboy Association (EXCA) Hall of Fame in the U.S.

“I was so proud. Just being nominated was an honour, but receiving the personalised buckle was unforgettable.”

Currently, Natasha is training in Emmett Therapy, a muscle-release technique for horses. She’s also on her way to becoming a certified riding instructor.

“It’s about teaching people from the ground up, building that trust between horse and rider.”

Her guiding philosophy? “Always think positive, then the positive will come to you.”

And when it comes to riding? “Ride it like you stole it!”
