AFTER more than four decades of dedication to the game, Hervey Bay golfer Scott Bickerton had never scored a hole-in-one.
That changed, on June 12th of this year, when he stepped onto the 12th tee at the Hervey Bay Golf Club and struck a perfect 8-iron from 130 metres. The ball pitched cleanly, tracked toward the flag, then disappeared into the shadows. When Bickerton reached the green, the disbelief gave way to joy, there it was, sitting in the bottom of the cup.
“It’s surreal,” Scott said.
“You always wonder if it’ll ever happen to you. Then when it does, it feels like time stops. You are just standing there, staring at it, thinking, finally.”
For Scott, the journey to that moment was a long one. Having taken up the game 43 years ago, he had been close before ‘a few inches’ in fact, but never all the way. He joked that he’d been a long-time member of the ‘nearly board,’ the imaginary honour roll for golfers who came heartbreakingly close to a hole-inone without ever sealing the deal.
stories. And you always wonder if your turn will come. That day, it did.”
But the story didn’t end there.
Exactly one month later, on July 12th, Scott again stood over a tee shot on the 12th hole. Same hole.
“That might have gone in again.”
As with the first, the ball tracked into the shadows, unseen at the last moment. And just like before, when Scott reached the green, lightning had struck twice.
Two holes-in-one, one month
same club, a month apart but on the same day of the month—what do you even say to that?”
Statistically, the odds of two holesin-one within such a short span are astronomical, and while Scott knows others with multiple aces, the sheer symmetry of his achievement, down to the calendar and hole number, makes it something special even among seasoned golfers.
Same distance. Same shadowy green. And once again, he struck the ball sweetly.
“I’ve watched other people do it, seen the celebrations, heard the

apart — both on the 12th hole and the 12th day of the month.
“People play their whole lives and never get one.”
“I thought I’d had my moment. To get two—on the same hole, with the
For Scott, golf is more than just a game, it’s a way to stay connected. He plays regularly with a rotating group of about a dozen local mates, from young blokes in their twenties to sprightly retirees in their seventies. That mix, he says, is part of what keeps the game interesting.
“You are out there competing with
younger guys, giving and taking a bit of banter, but the handicap system levels the playing field. It keeps you sharp, and it keeps you social.”
He sees the value of the game not just in the technical skill but in the mental health benefits too.
“It really is you versus you.”
“The ball’s not moving, it’s just sitting there. You are in control. But you are also out in the fresh air, having a laugh with mates. That stuff matters. Especially as we get older, staying connected like that is important.”
Asked how he celebrated the back-to-back aces, Scott’s response is typical of a man who plays more for the love of the game than the glory.
“No big fuss. Bit of ribbing from the boys, a few glasses of red at home. That was enough for me.”
And while tradition holds that those who score a hole-in-one should shout the bar, Scott reckons he got away lightly.
“They were giving it to me, sure, ‘We’ll be here ‘til midnight’, but thankfully it was a Thursday!”
In a game full of slow progress and small victories, Scott Bickerton’s rare double is a reminder that every round holds the potential for magic.

A wider rollout of speed limit changes is coming to key areas in Hervey Bay and Maryborough this month, as part of a push to boost safety and accessibility for residents and visitors.
On Hervey Bay’s Esplanade,
the limit drops from 50km/h to 40km/h between Hervey and Fraser Streets. Nearby side streets including McKean, Freshwater, and Campbell Streets will also have new 40km/h zones.
In Urangan, the Esplanade and Pier Street from Elizabeth to King Streets will adopt a 40km/h limit.
Meanwhile, Maryborough’s Queen Street will reduce
its speed from 60km/h to 50km/h between Neptune and Ferry Streets.
The changes come after expert review and community feedback and include new signage and road markings.
Fraser Coast Regional Council says these updates aim to create safer, more pedestrian-friendly environments across the region, with further improvements planned.

ART lovers are invited to experience one of the Fraser Coast’s longest-running creative traditions as the Hervey Bay Art Society presents its 41st Annual Competitive Art Exhibition (ACAE) at Gatakers Artspace.
Running from early August to 14 September, the exhibition will feature 160 artworks showcasing a diverse mix of styles and mediums - from vibrant acrylics and delicate watercolours to intricate drawings.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the Hervey Bay Art Society’s annual exhibition had become a much-anticipated fixture on the region’s arts calendar.
“Since it began in 1983, this competition has grown into one of the largest community art exhibition in the region, offering a platform for artists of all skill levels to share their work with the community,” he said.

A MAJOR expansion of local water testing services
will help protect vulnerable members of the community while supporting hospitals, aged care homes, councils and businesses across the Fraser Coast region and beyond.
Fraser Coast Regional Council’s WaterOne Laboratory has gained national accreditation to test for Legionella bacteria in water, becoming one of only a few labs in regional Queensland with this certification.
Water Services spokesperson Cr Zane O’Keefe said the new service was a vital step forward in supporting public health.
“Legionella testing is an important safeguard for community health, particularly for vulnerable people in aged care, hospitals, hospices and other high-risk environments,”
Cr O’Keefe said.
“By gaining this accreditation, WaterOne can now provide a faster, more accessible option for Legionella testing in our region and beyond, helping facilities meet government requirements without relying on labs in Brisbane.
“It means testing can now be done locally, which helps ensure samples stay within required holding times,
removes the need for expensive courier services, and speeds up turnaround times for results.”
The accreditation from the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) confirms WaterOne meets strict national standards for Legionella testing and reporting. It follows 12 months of detailed preparation and assessment by the local laboratory team.
Legionella is a bacteria that can grow in warm water systems such as hot water pipes, showers and cooling towers. If inhaled through fine water droplets, it can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a serious form of pneumonia.
The new service is designed to assist a range of clients, including aged care providers, hospitals, hospices, plumbing companies, councils,
commercial businesses and resorts.
Cr O’Keefe said the WaterOne team already provides a broad range of accredited microbiological and chemical water testing.
“The WaterOne team test everything from drinking water and swimming pools to rainwater tanks, rivers, lakes, sewage treatment plants and package treatment systems,” he said.
“It’s all backed by expert local staff, fast turnaround times, and the quality assurance that comes with national accreditation.”
WaterOne is owned and operated by Fraser Coast Regional Council. To learn more or enquire about services, visit frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ waterone

FRASER Coast Regional Council has adopted a new plan to help reduce the risk of bushfires and protect local communities.
The Bushfire Risk Mitigation Strategy sets out practical steps Council will take on the land it manages, from building and maintaining fire access trails to carrying out planned burns in high-risk areas.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the plan was about being prepared and reducing the danger on Council-managed land before disaster strikes.
“We’ve all seen the devastation that bushfires can cause, such as the 2018 fire at Tinnanbar and the 2020 fire on K’gari that burned for two months and scorched half the island,” he said.
“This plan helps us take early action to reduce bushfire risk close to homes, schools, parks and community facilities right across the Fraser Coast.”
The Strategy was developed by a specialist consultant and informed by early discussions with the Queensland Fire Department, local Rural Fire Brigades, Traditional Owners and other land management groups. It includes:
• A five-year program of fire trail maintenance and
hazard reduction burns across the region
• Detailed plans for managing risk in 10 highpriority bushland reserves
• Guidelines to reduce fire risk while protecting local plants and wildlife
• Ongoing coordination with emergency services and local Rural Fire Brigades to ensure a rapid and effective response when needed
A dedicated Council officer has been appointed to lead the delivery of the plan, with work starting this year.
Council has identified priority sites based on risk modelling, fire history and proximity to populated areas. These will be the focus of early hazard reduction and
vegetation management activities.
Cr Seymour said the strategy builds on Council’s commitment to ensuring the Fraser Coast is a resilient and environmentally responsible region.
“This is about doing the groundwork now, so we’re not caught unprepared in the future. It’s about keeping our residents safe, reducing pressure on emergency services, and helping our region bounce back quicker if a fire does occur,” he said.
“Every landholder has a responsibility to be prepared and manage their bushfire risks, and this plan is all about Council managing the risk on the land it’s responsible for.”
JAYDEN Christie has stepped into the role of President of the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce with a clear sense of purpose, to build on a proud legacy and help guide the organisation into its next phase of growth and connection.
A respected small business owner himself, Jayden understands the challenge of balancing commercial demands with community leadership, but says the opportunity to contribute to something greater was too important to pass up.
“I’m passionate about growing the business industry and strengthening the Fraser Coast community,” Jayden said.
“I want the Chamber to be a driving force for connection, development, and progress, a place where ideas are welcomed and where the business community feels truly represented.”
Jayden takes over from outgoing President Sandra Holebrook, whose long-standing contribution to the Chamber and broader Hervey Bay business community he acknowledges with gratitude and respect.
“We have inherited a strong foundation, and we are incredibly thankful to Sandra and the previous committee members for their years of service. Our goal now is to build on that foundation with fresh energy and strategic direction.”
That new direction includes a more structured and collaborative
approach, with clearer roles across the executive team and a renewed focus on inclusive engagement.
“We are looking to streamline how the Chamber operates, make things more effcient, and share the workload more evenly so no one’s carrying it alone.”
With nearly 250 members and around 1,000 people on the mailing list, Jayden sees enormous opportunity to grow the Chamber’s reach, particularly by connecting with businesses not currently engaged.
“We see untapped potential in reaching out to new and established businesses across the region, and we are putting the structure in place to do that more proactively.”
umbrella, and that’s important for their independence, but we want to support their growth.”
“By running some joint events and fostering mentorship opportunities, we can bring generations of business leaders together.”
seize opportunities.”
That approach underpins Jayden’s view of the Chamber’s role in broader community issues. While he is clear that the Chamber won’t take sides politically, he believes it should serve as a neutral platform for business-led dialogue.
A key part of Jayden’s vision is closer collaboration with the Young Professionals Fraser Coast, a group historically independent from the Chamber but seen as critical to the future of the local business landscape.
“They are not under the Chamber
around economic development and budgetary planning.
“We are in the same business; building a better city.”
“We want to be part of the conversation, part of the solutions, and part of the platform that helps businesses navigate challenges and
“If there’s a major issue in the community, whether it’s a development proposal or a policy change, the Chamber can provide a professional space where those conversations happen.”
“We’re here to foster constructive debate, not division.”
In his first year as President, Jayden is focused on three clear priorities: growing membership, refreshing the Chamber’s event calendar with more dynamic and skill-based programming, and embedding stronger systems for long-term sustainability.
That includes introducing new membership tiers to suit different budgets and business types, and expanding professional development opportunities through workshops and guest speakers.
“Success for me in twelve months’
time is seeing more faces at our events, a broader and more engaged membership, and a Chamber that is respected and relevant.”
“We are here to be the voice of business in Hervey Bay, and that means showing up, listening, and leading.”
The newly appointed 2025–26 Chamber Committee reflects Jayden’s collaborative vision, bringing together a strong mix of experience, energy, and professional capability.
Supporting him in the executive are Vice Presidents Luke Strochnetter and Catherine Reid, both wellregarded for their commitment to local enterprise.
Bronson Aukaha steps into the role of Treasurer, while Lisa Robinson-Smith takes on the position of Secretary, ensuring smooth governance and operational oversight.
Rounding out the team are General Committee Members Natalie Alexander, Sarah Smith, Jade Wellings, and Mindy Thorpe, each bringing unique insights and skills to the table as the Chamber moves confidently into its next chapter. Together, this team is committed to ensuring the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce remains a vital, inclusive, and forward-thinking advocate for local business.

HERVEY Bay will welcome the 2025 Pain Revolution Rural Outreach Tour on Sunday, 24 August, offering a free community event designed to help people living with chronic pain take back control of their health and wellbeing.
The session will be held at 4pm at the Hervey Bay Community Centre, 22 Charles Street, Pialba, and is part of a week-long cycling tour through regional Queensland.
The tour spans over 800 kilometres, travelling from Bundaberg to Caloundra, and brings together scientists, health professionals, educators, and individuals with lived experience of chronic pain.
Their goal is to share knowledge and provide practical strategies to help people better understand and manage their pain.
Chronic pain affects one in five Australians, but the impact is more severe in rural and regional areas due to limited
access to healthcare services.
The Pain Revolution aims to bridge that gap by offering community-based education and support to improve outcomes for people living outside major cities.
The community event in Hervey Bay will include expert-led presentations, Q&A sessions, interactive displays, and access to the Brain Bus—a mobile lab that uses engaging activities to help people understand how pain works in the body and brain.
The program is designed to be inclusive and beneficial for a broad audience, including those who experience chronic pain themselves, carers, support workers, and health professionals.
The Pain Revolution promotes evidence-based information and aims to improve what is known as pain literacy—the ability to understand and act on the causes and contributors to pain.
It also encourages connection between individuals and local support networks, creating stronger community responses to long-term health challenges. By raising awareness and delivering free, scienceinformed resources directly to regional towns, the tour plays a vital role in empowering people to make informed decisions about their pain care.
The 2025 initiative is proudly supported by Country to Coast Queensland (CCQ) and the University of South Australia, both long-time advocates for rural health improvement.
Residents of Hervey Bay and surrounding areas are encouraged to attend the session and take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn, connect, and build confidence in managing chronic pain.
Registration is free. To secure your place, visit https://www. painrevolution.org/tour
THE NEW Hervey Bay Community Hub is halfway through construction, marking a major step forward in delivering more public spaces, centralised Council services and a revitalised city heart.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the project was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the city centre, create jobs, drive business investment, and deliver lasting benefits for residents of all ages.
“More than three-quarters of this development will be community space, including a new library, meeting rooms, creative areas, and places to learn, connect and relax,” he said.
“This will be a space for everyone, whether you’re studying, discovering new technology, attending a workshop, borrowing a book or just looking for a quiet place to read.”
Construction is progressing well, with the building expected to reach its full height in early spring.
“More than 17,000 square metres of concrete have been poured so far, nearly 900 tonnes of steel reinforcement installed, and over 39 tonnes
of structural steel used to support large windows and open spaces,” Cr Seymour said.
“The biggest single concrete pour so far, covering more than 1,000 square metres, forms part of the new library and will house areas such as a Makerspace, podcast rooms, a Young Adult zone, and study and tech spaces.”
The site is a hive of activity, with an average of 110 workers on site each day, and up to 170 expected during the busiest periods.
“Importantly, local businesses are playing a big role in bringing this project to life,” Cr Seymour said.
“More than $25 million in contracts have already been awarded to local companies, which is about a third of all committed works so far.”
Cr Seymour said the Hervey Bay Community Hub would be a long-term asset for the whole community.
“After construction is completed in mid-2026 and the hub opens in the second half of 2026, it will bring together services that are currently spread across many locations and provide a new city heart for Hervey Bay,” he
said.
“By creating more engaging public spaces and bringing more people into the city centre, we’re also helping local businesses and boosting activity in the area.”
The Hervey Bay Community Hub will include:
• A modern two-level library with more space and services
• A new Council administration and customer service centre
• A Disaster Resilience Centre to help plan, prepare for and respond to natural disasters
• Meeting rooms, creative spaces and flexible areas for public use
• An outdoor public plaza
The Hervey Bay Library and Council Administration Centre (incorporating a Disaster Resilience Centre) is a commitment under the Hinkler Regional Deal, supported by $40 million from the Australian Government.

LIVING with hearing loss can be isolating—but a dedicated local group is working to change that, offering support, information, and friendship for those navigating the challenges of hearing loss and cochlear implants.
CICADA Queensland, a not-for-profit organisation, hosts regular meetups in Hervey Bay aimed at building community and empowering people with hearing loss.
The group welcomes anyone affected—whether they are new to hearing loss, exploring treatment options, or living with a cochlear implant.
The Hervey Bay branch meets on the first Wednesday of every month at the Hervey Bay Library from 9.30am to 11.30am. These friendly and informative gatherings provide a valuable opportunity to hear first-hand from others who have been through the process of getting a cochlear implant—the benefits, the challenges, and everything in between.
One local member, who lives at Latitude 25 in Hervey Bay and has a cochlear implant, said the sessions offer more than just advice—they offer
connection.
“We at CICADA QLD embrace everyone with a hearing loss,” the group says.
“Don’t be alone—come and join us on the journey and help, educate and support others in understanding the way hearing loss impacts our lives.”
Whether you are just beginning to explore cochlear implant options or simply looking for a supportive environment to share your experiences, CICADA welcomes you.
The group is passionate about spreading awareness and helping more people

their equipment, with Fraser Coast Regional Council approving new leases for part of a shed at the McFie Park sporting fields in Torquay.
The Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club and the Beachhouse Fishing Club will be offered five-year leases to use separate sections of the Council-owned shed for storage.
The decision follows an expression of interest process that invited community organisations to apply to use the space.
Communities’ spokesperson Cr Michelle Govers said the leases were an important way to support local groups and make better use of Council facilities.
“We want to make sure our community facilities are being used, not sitting empty,” she said.
“Having a secure place to store their gear helps these groups
stay active and involved in our community.
“Leasing part of this shed means it can serve a practical purpose while Council continues to look at long-term plans for the area.”
Both clubs met the requirements to enter into a lease with Council, including providing insurance, financial documents, and proof they are not-for-profit organisations.
The move is part of a broader push by Council to strengthen community partnerships and make Council-owned infrastructure more accessible to grassroots organisations.
By ensuring these spaces are put to good use, Council is supporting the growth and sustainability of clubs that play a vital role in the social fabric of the region.
The five-year leases help give the clubs some certainty, while still allowing for future planning and
flexibility as Council continues a strategic review of community land.
The leases were approved at a recent Council meeting following consultation with the clubs, with councillors acknowledging the importance of providing reliable storage options to support the ongoing work of community-based organisations.
Council also recognised the longstanding contributions both clubs have made to the Fraser Coast, noting their ongoing involvement in community events and activities.
It’s hoped the new storage arrangements will free up time and resources, enabling the groups to focus more on delivering their programs and engaging with the wider public.
These types of partnerships ensure community assets are shared efficiently, and that local groups have what they need to thrive and grow into the future.
THE FUTURE of the Fraser Coast workforce was in the spotlight as TAFE Queensland celebrated its Apprentice and Trainee Awards at the Hervey Bay campus restaurant, Images.
The evening recognised the outstanding dedication, skill, and achievements of apprentices and trainees who have completed their studies over the past six months.
Proudly supported by Trade Mutt, Trade Tools and Bunnings Warehouse, the night was filled with energy, entertainment, and welldeserved recognition across a wide array of vocational fields.
TAFE Queensland’s General Manager for the East Coast region, Mark Reilly, described the awards as a vital step in acknowledging those shaping the region’s economic future.
“We know that apprentices and trainees with the right skills help power Queensland’s economy,” Mr Reilly said.
“According to the latest data, nine out of ten jobs predicted to see the most growth in the next five years
will likely require a VET qualification. That makes the work these graduates are doing – and the training they’ve received – all the more important.”
Mr Reilly also noted that momentum is building in the region, with new projects such as the Queensland Train Manufacturing Project creating hundreds of fresh career opportunities.
“This is a boon for the region, but one that requires skilled workers with the confidence and capability to get the job done. TAFE Queensland is committed to providing the quality, handson training that will set our state on course for a strong future.”
The awards night brought together local employers, industry representatives, training providers and community members, providing a platform to celebrate the dedication and achievements of apprentices and trainees across diverse trades and vocations.
The event also offered valuable networking opportunities for attendees to connect and discuss future
workforce needs.
Winners were announced across multiple categories, with awards going to standout apprentices and trainees in areas including beauty, electrotechnology, and engineering.
The top honour – Fraser Coast Apprentice of the Year – was awarded to Sam Taylor, whose dedication and skill were recognised as a shining example for others to follow.
The full list of award winners included:

The night celebrated not only individual success but also the growing importance of vocational education and training in building a strong, future-ready local workforce.
A MUCH-loved community group in Howard is celebrating a local win, with the Burrum District Community Men’s Shed receiving a grant to upgrade its computer and internet facilities.
Thanks to the support of the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), the Shed is now improving its IT systems to better serve its members and streamline its operations.
Located in the heart of Howard, the Men’s Shed has become a vital gathering place for local residents— particularly older men—offering friendship, purpose, and hands-on skills development.
The new technology upgrade will allow the Management Committee to improve the accuracy and security of its record keeping, while also boosting internet speeds to support
the Shed’s CNC laser operations.
It’s a step forward that volunteers say will increase productivity and efficiency—but more importantly, it opens the door for members to build digital skills that many have never had the chance to learn.
The Shed will now be able to offer support and training in how to use email and safely navigate the internet, helping locals stay connected and informed in an increasingly online world.
“We sincerely thank FRRR for their generous support in helping us build capacity, improve operations, and enhance the wellbeing of our members,” the group said.
The Burrum District Community Men’s Shed continues to grow as a positive force in the region, encouraging social connection, mental health support, and lifelong
learning.
With members involved in everything from woodwork to community projects, the Shed is often a quiet achiever—contributing to local causes, mentoring others, and offering a welcoming space for men to talk, share, and stay active. This latest upgrade ensures the Shed can keep up with modern demands while continuing to deliver strong benefits to the Howard community.
It also strengthens the Shed’s ability to attract new members from surrounding areas, building a wider network of support and friendship. For locals, the grant represents more than just new technology—it’s an investment in the people and projects that help keep Howard connected, skilled, and supported.
CAN you carry a tune, crack a joke or steal the spotlight on the dancefloor? Entries are now open for the Fraser Coast Seniors Talent Quest, taking centre stage during Seniors Month on Sunday 19 October.
Fraser Coast Regional
Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls de Waard is encouraging anyone aged 50 and over to get involved in the much-loved event, which is a highlight of Seniors Month celebrations in October.
“Now’s the perfect time to dust off your dancing shoes, warm up your vocal cords or polish that unique party trick - send in your entry and start practising,” she said.
“The Talent Quest is always a crowd favourite, showcasing the incredible variety of skills our local seniors have, from singers and musicians to comedy acts and dancers.
There are six categories to choose from, offering something for everyone.
• Best Musical Act
• Best Group Act
• Best Vocalist
• Most Unusual Act
• Best Overall Performer
• Bob Campbell Encouragement Award
Ms de Waard said more than 20 fantastic acts took to the stage last year, and she was hoping to see even more incredible talent join us in October.
“Whether you are performing or simply coming along to watch the show, you are guaranteed a great afternoon with lots of laughs and some seriously good singers,” she said.
The 2025 Fraser Coast Seniors Talent Quest will be held at the Hervey Bay RSL Club, with doors opening at 3pm and the show kicking off at 3.30pm.
“The event follows a format similar to Australia’s Got Talent, with a panel of judges awarding prizes across each category,” said Ms De Waard.
“Tickets are $5 for performers and $5 for spectators, which includes afternoon tea. Tickets
can be purchased in advance from the Halcro Street Community Centre, 30 Halcro Street, Pialba or bought at the door on the day.
“This event has been a cornerstone of our Seniors Month calendar for more than 15 years.
“It’s all about celebrating our seniors, bringing people together and promoting positive, vibrant ageing.”
Entries close on Saturday 18 October.
To enter, contact the Halcro Street Community Centre on 4194 2441 or email juls. dewaard@frasercoast.qld.gov. au for an entry form.

GYMS are often misunderstood as places of vanity or ego—spaces focused on image rather than health.
But what if a gym becomes more than that?
What if it’s a space to understand your body, improve your movement, and invest in your health for the long term?
Strength training isn’t solely about lifting heavy or building muscle.
It’s about learning how your body moves and how to protect it so you can stay active and pain-free.
Simple movements like farmers carries help with everyday tasks—carrying shopping, children, or lifting heavy objects with ease—while squats improve your ability to stand, bend, and move comfortably.
Developing core strength isn’t just for aesthetics; it supports your entire body, helps reduce back pain, and boosts your posture.
Many accept pain, stiffness, or discomfort as part of ageing, believing that a sedentary or inactive life is easier.
But living with pain or simply accepting decline is actually the harder path.
Strength training offers a real opportunity to decrease pain, regain mobility, and continue enjoying the things you love, no matter your age.
It’s not about lifting the heaviest weights; it’s about building resilience and
confidence, supporting your body to handle everyday activities with ease.
Beyond the physical benefits, strength training nurtures mental health— boosting confidence, reducing stress, and fostering resilience.
When movement is approached with purpose— knowing each squat or lift supports your health, mobility, and longevity—it becomes an act of self-care.
You’re investing in a future where ageing doesn’t mean decline but continued vitality.
This is a proactive choice today that will significantly impact your ability, mobility, and quality of life in the years ahead—strength training and muscle growth are the key to maintaining resilience and living actively into the future.

ONCE on the brink of folding, the Fraser Coast Mountain Bike Club Inc. has come roaring back to life with renewed passion, a strong committee, and a clear vision for the future.
Thanks to a dedicated group of local riders who stepped up last October, the club is not only surviving—it’s thriving.
The revival began when a new committee was formed, driven by a shared love for mountain biking. What followed was a transformation powered by grassroots energy and a commitment to community.
Since taking over, the committee has launched a series of initiatives laying the foundation for a better club.
Among their first efforts was a successful fundraising raffle for a mountain bike, generously donated by Adrenalin Cycling. A second raffle is currently underway, with the draw scheduled for 13 August.
These raffles have brought in funds to support the club’s plans.
Another initiative is Gears & Cheers, a sponsorship program connecting local businesses with riders. Selected from a range of applicants, these sponsored riders wear the business’s logo on their club kit.
In return, the club provides promotion for the sponsor, creating
a win-win for businesses and riders alike.
Key goals for the club include securing a storage shed for equipment closer to the trails.
The committee is also working with Fraser Coast Regional Council to improve signage at trailheads and along main roads, and to develop a formal carpark.
These upgrades are essential to make the trails more accessible.
The club has also built a strong relationship with the Toogoom and District Community Association, reinforcing its commitment to the wider community.
The club’s work is visible on the trails. Hosting Come and Try Days, bike maintenance workshops, monthly ladies’ rides, school holiday coaching clinics, and working bees are just some of the ways the club is building skills and friendships.
The club has been active at local markets, including upcoming appearances at the Pier and Nikenbah markets.
These stalls promote the sport, the club, and its fundraising efforts, while welcoming newcomers and building a strong sense of belonging.
These events are just the start. The real action, however, is in the trails.
The club is collaborating with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Fraser Coast Council to upgrade trails, add features, and develop new routes.
The calendar includes:
• Trail working bees to maintain and enhance the Toogoom trail network
• Regular social rides
• Monthly ladies’ rides
Social rides, both locally and on the Sunshine Coast, are also part of the calendar.
• Trail-side bike repair workshops
• Free holiday coaching clinics for members
These improvements suit all skill levels—from beginners to adrenalineseeking pros. A new jump line is also in the works.
“Without a club, these trails wouldn’t be maintained or improved. A club is required to have the necessary permissions to develop the trails,” said Club President Chris O’Brien.
“This is why having an active, supported club is essential, not just for our current members, but for the future of the sport here on the Fraser Coast,” he said.
The club is driven by community. Every event reflects a culture of inclusion and support. Whether hosting other clubs or on away
trips, the focus is on connection and encouragement.
To reflect its fresh start, the club recently launched a rebrand, including a new logo, t-shirts, hats, stickers, banners, and soon-to-arrive riding jerseys.
This identity package is helping build pride and unity among members.
“We’re not just maintaining trails, we’re building something bigger,” said Mr O’Brien. “A community where everyone feels welcome, valued, and part of something awesome,” he said.

The club is calling for volunteers for a major trail working bee. With support from their machinery sponsor, they’ll be relocating a load of dirt to rebuild and repair features on Trails 7 and 11.
This marks the first step in the club’s trail development plan—made possible through their growing partnership with Parks.
The Fraser Coast Mountain Bike Club is back—and just getting started.

A ONCE graffiti-covered wall in Hervey Bay is set to be transformed into a vibrant showcase of youth creativity and storytelling through the Where I Belong Art Story Wall—a new initiative by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC).
The project invites young people from across the Fraser Coast to share their personal stories and experiences through meaningful artwork, giving them the opportunity to reflect on what it means to belong in their community.
The initiative is part of HBNC’s ongoing commitment to fostering community connection and creative expression. Each artwork will feature a scannable code linking to a short video or written story by the artist, offering the public a unique, interactive insight into the inspiration behind each piece.
Guiding the project is local artist and experienced facilitator, LeeLee Creative, who will lead a series of free youth workshops in August.
The sessions will help participants explore their identity and sense of place, and convert those stories into visual art to be displayed along the Bideford Street bike path.
LeeLee is passionate about fostering safe and supportive spaces for young people.
“We want to create spaces that allow them to share their perspectives and start conversations that create change,” said HBNC CEO Tanya Stevenson.
The initiative is being delivered in partnership with Youth Justice, with support from the Fraser Coast Regional Council and Queensland Government.
“Connectedness is feeling a sense of belonging, but the journey to understand how we belong can be difficult for some,” said Chantel Goodwin,
Acting Manager of Hervey Bay’s Youth Justice Service Centre.
“We value the voices of
young people in Hervey Bay and we are excited to give young people a creative means of expressing their connection to our community.”
State Member for Hervey Bay, David Lee, added, “The Where I Belong project is a fantastic initiative to engage young people with the creative arts, which has proven social and mental health benefits.”
The Where I Belong Art Story Wall will be unveiled in October 2025.
Interested participants can collect their wooden canvas from the Neighbourhood Hive between 9am and 1pm on weekdays.

FROM this month, new seller disclosure laws are officially in effect across Queensland, and for homeowners looking to sell, the stakes have never been higher.
Under the updated legislation, vendors are now legally required to provide prospective buyers with a formal disclosure statement before contracts are signed.
This statement must include details about the property’s title, any unregistered encumbrances, zoning, body corporate records (if applicable), and other critical information.
According to Leah Quinn, Principal of Prime Agents, this change isn’t just a legal technicality, it is a potential dealbreaker if mishandled.
“What many sellers may not realise is, that if your disclosure documents are not correct or complete, the buyer can walk away, even at the last minute,” Leah said.
“This isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about getting it right from day one.”
With high buyer demand continuing across Hervey Bay and competition still strong in premium pockets of the market, the importance of a smooth, compliant sale process is paramount.
“We are working with sellers every day to ensure they are not only legally protected but also positioned for a confident and stress-free transaction.”
“The new rules don’t need to be daunting, but they do need to be taken seriously, and we guide the way for sellers.”
One of the key risks is relying on outdated practices or working with agents
who are not across the finer details.
It is no longer enough to simply market a home, agents now have a duty to walk sellers through the disclosure process in detail, with the support of legal professionals where required.
Even if your home was listed for sale prior to the new disclosure laws coming into effect on 1 August 2025, you are still required to comply with the updated legislation if the property remains on the market.
The Seller Disclosure Statement must now be prepared and made available to prospective purchasers before any contract is signed.
“There’s no ‘grandfathering’ clause for listings that went live before August 1st either.”
“If your property is still on the market after August 1st, you will need to furnish the correct disclosure documents to keep
your campaign legally sound and protect the sale.”
The cost of getting it wrong could be a terminated contract. Weeks of lost momentum. A tarnished listing. And in some cases, legal exposure.
“This is not the time to gamble with inexperience or cut corners.”
“The right agent won’t just bring buyers, they will protect your sale and your peace of mind.”
With Prime Agents’ in-house compliance processes and agent training already completed, Leah believes the new laws offer an opportunity for professionalism to shine.
“If you’re thinking of selling, make sure you are in hands that know this process inside and out.”
“Because now more than ever, the fine print matters.”
SET along the southern edge of Hervey Bay’s coastline, Urangan continues to attract steady interest from homebuyers, investors, and sea-change seekers alike, and with good reason. Framed by its iconic 868-metre pier, Urangan blends relaxed lifestyle appeal with genuine market depth.
With a population now approaching 11,000, the suburb has grown steadily in recent years, driven by both migration and local infrastructure investment. While Urangan has long been a favourite among retirees, its community has evolved to welcome families, professionals, and remote workers, drawn by its schooling options, walkability, and coastal character.
The suburb contains over 5,600 dwellings, the majority being detached homes, with an increasing mix of townhouses and low-rise apartments adding to the diversity. From a real estate perspective, Urangan has delivered consistent capital growth.
Over the past five years, house prices have increased by approximately 40–45%, with the current median sitting around $670,000. Units have experienced similar upward momentum, with a median of just over $500,000 and annual growth exceeding 10% in the last year alone.
Homes typically sell in under a month, reflecting continued buyer demand and a relatively tight market. What truly sets Urangan apart is its unique balance of amenity and tranquillity. From weekend markets at the marina to morning walks along the esplanade, the suburb offers a laid-back charm that’s hard to replicate.
Families appreciate the access to local schools, parks, and shopping, while retirees enjoy the quiet pace and community feel.
As a market leading agency, working in Urangan week in, week out, we can confidently say this is a suburb that continues to reward thoughtful buyers and long-term holders.
Whether you are looking to make a move or simply want to understand what is possible in the current market, there is never been a better time to start a conversation.
MARK Sutton is sixty-four years young and jokingly describes himself as “still the spirited young bloke I was in the 70s.” While that may be up for debate, what isn’t is his passion for solar energy, music, and making a difference.
As the owner and director of Fraser Coast Solar and Battery, Mark often works with large-scale solar farms, but this is only a small part of the business. Most of the work lies in residential and commercial solar solutions right here in town, and the business has grown significantly over the years.
Mark lives in Hervey Bay… but also lives in Noosa and outside of Kilcoy, which means he spends a good chunk of his life on the road.
Since transitioning into solar, Mark has worked closely with chambers
of commerce across Southeast and Southern Queensland, helping members find energy solutions that suit both their needs and their budgets. He is now a member of the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce and a solar and energy advisor for the members.
“Where else would you want to work? This is the most beautiful place in the world.”
Mark’s work ethic is fierce. He currently works seven days a week, clocking around fifteen hours a day, especially since the Federal Government’s battery subsidy program sent demand soaring.
Currently, Mark’s working out how to fit that schedule into getting back on community radio on Fraser Coast FM 107.5. His program, Reelin’ In the Years, named after the Steely
Dan classic, draws on his 17 years of radio experience. He previously produced and hosted the same show at Noosa FM.
“I’ve interviewed some amazing people like The Doobies and Bonnie Raitt. I’ve been lucky to chase the music dream as a DJ.”
Mark’s love for music started young. At four years old, he cohosted a charity music event with his father, and he hasn’t looked back. He’s been the MC, DJ, promoter, and organiser for events ever since.
For Mark, it’s all about using music to bring people together and support worthy causes.
“People are doing it tough. If we can use music to raise money and lift spirits, that’s something worth doing.”
Born in Flint, Michigan (known for
its contaminated water), Mark left with his family in 1968. He grew up on the Space Coast of Florida, in the shadow of NASA’s rocket launches.
“We saw Apollo missions take off. They shook the earth and lit the sky. Some of my mates’ dads were part of the mission to bring Apollo 13 back. It was and still is incredibly emotional.”
Mark was widowed young and raised three children as a single parent. His experiences inspired his support for hospice care, including recent involvement with the Fraser Coast Hospice.
“Cancer affects everyone. I lost my wife many years ago. Helping others through what I’ve learned is part of my journey.”
Reflecting on life, Mark says, “Life is precious, short, and fragile. My
family’s job has always been to be the class clowns. I know it’s hard to believe, but I was and still am the class clown in a family of teachers. That, to me, was my greatest achievement.
“Life was not designed to break us down and make us old and boring, but society has done that extraordinarily well.”
Mark likes to meet new people, whether in business or as friends, and to help those in the community who are doing it a bit tough.
He is always keen for a coffee and a chat. “There’s a water-skier’s saying, ‘You don’t get to this age without losing a bit of fibreglass from the boat.’ So yes, I’ve lost a bit of fibreglass, but I’m still here, still learning, and still having fun.”

Every home we sell, helps us to support the amazing work done by Fraser Coast Mates. A portion of each sale empowers the important work they do in the community we all share.
Fraser Coast Mates was formed in 2018 by a group of local business people who were concerned by the rise of debilitating mental health issues and rising suicide rates across our region.
They are a local organisation on the Fraser Coast that aims to build local awareness and grow conversations about mental wellbeing by bridging the gap between those suffering and the
local support services available and ultimately making progress for suicide prevention.
Their number one goal is to encourage mates to be better equipped to help their mates and colleagues in times of struggle by telling local stories, helping mates gain clarity around what services are available locally and coordinating community events.
