COSY NIGHTS
WHEN Tanya Stevenson, CEO of the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, was awarded a Social Impact Leadership Australia (SILA) scholarship, she knew it would be significant. What she didn’t expect was just how far it would take her, literally and philosophically.
Funded by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, Myer Foundation, Sidney Myer Fund, the Snow Foundation and the Paul Ramsay Foundation., SILA offers not-forprofit leaders a rare opportunity, a 10-month leadership program paired with a 12-week fully paid sabbatical. No expectations. No deliverables. Just time to rest, reflect, and explore.
“For people in our sector, that’s a huge shift,” Tanya said.
“We are used to being hands-on and available around the clock. Stepping away felt foreign, and a little uncomfortable at first.”
But with built-in support for her team and board, Tanya took the opportunity seriously, choosing to fully disconnect from emails, calls, and even social media for almost six months.
“I realised if I was going to do it properly, I had to really stop. No
notifications. No scrolling. I had to allow myself the mental space to think clearly.”
She began journaling, reading, and researching sabbatical experiences.
Themes started to emerge, all circling around one idea: space. Not just physical space, but emotional and communal spaces where people feel seen, supported, and connected.
That question, what makes people feel they belong, became the focus of her journey.
With support from her organisation, Tanya travelled to five countries, exploring innovative approaches to community wellbeing.
In Dubai, she visited the ‘Happiness Lounges’, redesigned government service centres where staff are trained in empathy and customer care.
In Amsterdam, she spent time in the acclaimed ‘Dementia Village’, a secure, realistic neighbourhood designed to give people with dementia freedom and dignity.
“These weren’t just facilities, they were thoughtful, purpose-built spaces that changed people’s daily experiences,” Tanya said.
In London and Iceland, she
observed youth programs and public events aimed at inclusion and safety.
One initiative in Iceland, challenged gender stereotypes through a community-led walk advocating for women’s rights and respect, regardless of appearance.
Tanya also made time for unstructured discovery, like the ‘Garden of Dreams’ in Nepal, where her reflections began to crystallise.
bookazine now available on Amazon in print and Kindle formats. It’s part travelogue, part community design guide, an accessible resource for anyone interested in the environments we create and how they shape our lives.
“I didn’t want to write a textbook or a self-help book,” Tanya said.
“This is something anyone can pick up and explore.”
The book introduces fourteen types of human spaces—from economic and kinship, to creative, reflective, and nature- based spaces.
One of the strongest insights Tanya brought home was how little time most people spend in the spaces that restore them.
“It was only two acres, but it had everything, quiet corners, art studios, music, nature, food, conversation,” she said.
“It felt like a complete place. I sat there most of the day and just observed. That’s when the ideas all came together.”
What started as a journal became ‘The Spaces We Seek’, a 105-page
“We overinvest in economic spaces, because we have to earn a living, but the cost is often time away from the places that give us energy. This book is just a way to reflect on that.”
Tanya’s return to Hervey Bay coincided with the local flooding, an immediate test of how to apply what she’d learned.
Instead of a traditional crisis centre, the Neighbourhood Centre created a ‘pop-up recovery lounge’ a relaxed,
welcoming space where people could connect, seek support, and begin to heal, borrowed in part from Dubai’s community design approach.
She is also spearheading the development of a digital ‘Social Vault’, an online platform where community organisations can easily search and share innovative projects from around the world.
While the SILA sabbatical saw some leaders choose retirement or career changes, Tanya’s path became clearer.
“It helped me ask myself, where do I actually want to be?”
I realised I still believe in this work, but I want to do it smarter, and invite more people into the space.
She now hopes to encourage more collaboration across the sector, especially when it comes to sharing ideas and programs.
“Our sector is filled with passionate people doing great things, but we often work in silos,” she said.
“If we want to create meaningful spaces in our communities, we need to share what we’ve learned.”
The Spaces We Seek by Tanya Stevenson is available now via Amazon.

EARLY in 2025, the community faced a challenge when Sleepbus—the incredible charity that brought the life-changing safe-sleep bus to Hervey Bay in April 2023— announced it was closing its doors. But where some saw an end, a passionate group of volunteers saw a fresh beginning.
Determined to keep this vital service running, a dedicated team of local volunteers rallied together to save the bus and continue providing safe, peaceful sleep to those in need right here in Hervey Bay.
They knew that to do this, the bus needed a new home—and fast!
Enter the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City, who jumped in wholeheartedly to support this important cause.
A wonderful partnership blossomed, and with the Rotary Club’s guidance, eight regular volunteers formed a new committee and satellite club to take ownership and operate the bus locally.
With the Sleepbus charity closing, the team gave the bus a fresh new identity: the ZBus—named for those allimportant “Zzzzzz” peaceful, safe sleeps it offers every night. Now fully managed right
here in Hervey Bay, all decisions about the ZBus are made locally, with ongoing communication with the community.
Every dollar raised goes directly to keeping the bus running for those who need it most.
The ZBus features eight private sleeping pods, each equipped with its own toilet, charging port, and air conditioning—offering comfort and privacy for anyone seeking refuge.
Starting mid July, the ZBus will be operating Friday through Sunday nights at Apex Park, with boarding from 8pm. The only rule is simple: everyone deserves a safe, quiet sleep.
The ZBus Satellite Club was officially Chartered at the recent Rotary Hervey Bay City Changeover Dinner, with Kelly Anne Thumath, the passionate
instigator behind keeping the bus alive, stepping up as President.
Kelly and the team of volunteers are now proudly running this life-changing service.
A huge thank you goes out to the wonderful sponsors who have joined the ZBus journey from the very start, including Community Bank Hervey Bay, RPM Mechanical & Mobile Roadworthy Certificates, The Barfly Club Hervey Bay, Fraser Coast Anglican College, Helloworld Travel Hervey Bay, Freemasons Daylight Lodge Hervey Bay, Wide Bay Transit, Kindness Works, JR Marketing Group and GLB Excavation Services.
Together, Hervey Bay is proving that when a community comes together, it can keep the lights on—and the doors open—for those who need it most.

READING wombats, colourful landscapes, and a love of literature were among the winning themes in this year’s Fraser Coast Libraries Design-a-Bookmark competition, with winners officially celebrated at a special presentation.
Fraser Coast Mayor
George Seymour congratulated the winners across five age categories and the People’s Choice Award, who each received a certificate and a $50 Buy Local gift card.
“This year we received a record 297 entries, up by 40 on last year,” he said.
“It’s great to see the growing popularity of the competition, especially in the 60+ category which had a 40% increase in participation.”
Five of the six categories were judged by Regional Arts Development Coordinator Amanda Kratzmann, who praised the creativity and skill on display.
“One of my favourites was the reading wombats in the 18–59 age category – it was both charming and skilfully illustrated,” she said. “The playful book titles added a great sense of humour that invites a closer look and a smile.”
• 6 years and under – Evelyn Cousins
• 7 to 11 years – Abigail Piper
• 12 to 17 years – Shay Cornish
• 18 – 59 years – Katie Bell
• 60+ years – Helen Cory
• People’s Choice Award –Neve Barker
Cr Seymour said the People’s Choice Award again drew strong support, with 758 votes submitted by library members selecting their favourite design.
“At just eight years old, Neve
Barker’s vibrant and eyecatching bookmark showcasing a passion for books captured the hearts of voters – a perfect theme for a library keepsake,” he said.
“All the entrants should be proud of their work, and we’re pleased to showcase their creativity with all entries on display in our libraries.
“The winning bookmark designs will soon be printed and available for free at all Fraser Coast Libraries.”
Fraser Coast Libraries receive financial assistance from the Queensland Government through the State Library of Queensland.
PARENTS and carers
in Hervey Bay are invited to attend a free evening workshop designed to help them guide their teenagers through the process of learning to drive safely.
Hosted by Road Safety Education, the “Drive Coach” workshop will take place on Wednesday, July 23, from 6:30 to 7:30pm at the Urangan Community Wellness Centre – The Tree House, located at 62-105 Elizabeth Street, Training Room 2, Urangan.
The session is tailored for anyone currently teaching or preparing to teach a young person to drive.
The program aims to empower parents and carers with essential tools and knowledge to better support their teen drivers during this critical learning phase.
Topics covered in the workshop include understanding the teenage brain and the challenges it poses when learning to drive, identifying risk factors for young drivers, and learning effective coaching techniques for learner drivers.
Attendees will also receive guidance on supporting the transition from learner to solo driver and how to collaborate effectively with professional
driving instructors. Drive Coach is built on evidence that parents and carers play a vital role in influencing how safely their teens drive.
However, many are not equipped with the latest information or strategies. This workshop addresses that gap, offering practical advice and the latest research in road safety.
Facilitators will also share strategies and conversation techniques used in the Ryda youth program, which is currently delivered in local high schools.
Ryda has helped thousands of students build knowledge and attitudes that support responsible road use. Attendees will have the
opportunity to ask questions, participate in discussions, and receive personalised advice from experts with years of experience in the field.
The workshop is part of a broader initiative supported by the Queensland Government’s Community Road Safety Grants Program and Rotary, aiming to reduce risks for young drivers and enhance safety on local roads.
With limited spaces available, interested participants are encouraged not to miss this unique opportunity to gain valuable insights, increase their confidence, and improve their impact on their teen’s learning-to-drive journey.

HERVEY Bay is set to receive a significant upgrade to its walking and cycling infrastructure, with the Fraser Coast Regional Council awarded $975,000 under the Queensland Government’s 2025–26 Walking and Cycling Grants programs.
Announced as part of the Government’s $19.1 million statewide investment, the funding aims to support more connected, accessible and safer pathways for pedestrians and cyclists across the Hervey Bay electorate.
The funding, delivered through the Walking Local Government Grants (WLGG) and the Cycle Network Local Government Grants (CNLGG) programs, will support both planning and construction projects throughout key areas of Hervey Bay.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour welcomed the announcement, calling it a win for both residents and visitors who value active and healthy lifestyles.
“We thank the Queensland Government and Hervey Bay MP David Lee for the $975,000 investment to improve walking and cycling in Hervey Bay,” Cr Seymour said.
“This investment backs key projects such as the Denmans Camp Road shared path and planning for the Esplanade
and tourist precincts, with the goal of helping more residents stay active and enjoy the Fraser Coast lifestyle.”
The grant will support a mix of immediate infrastructure upgrades and long-term planning projects. Among the headline initiatives are:
$550,000 to construct a shared path along Denmans Camp Road, from Boundary Road to Doolong Road.
$250,000 for a new active transport crossing near Gordon Street, also on Denmans Camp Road.
$100,000 to undertake an options analysis along the Hervey Bay Esplanade, from Beach Road to Pulgul Street.
In addition, three key tourism and city areas will benefit from early-stage planning investments of $25,000 each:
The Pialba City Centre
The Torquay Tourist Precinct
The Urangan Harbour Precinct
State Member for Hervey Bay David Lee MP welcomed the announcement.
“It is important to keep up with local amenity fitness infrastructure needs, that the Hervey Bay community will utilise,” Mr Lee said.
“There are many people who like walking and cycling, and this will provide extra incentive to do that.”
The successful Fraser
Coast projects are part of 56 initiatives being delivered across 25 councils statewide. However, the spotlight is firmly on Hervey Bay, where active transport infrastructure is playing an increasing role in the region’s liveability, tourism appeal and environmental goals.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the funding aligns with the government’s broader commitment to active transport.
“By backing councils with the funding and support they need, we’re ensuring local walking and cycling infrastructure is not only connected but built to encourage more Queenslanders to choose active travel every day,” Mr Mickelberg said.
All successful projects are scheduled to commence from July 2025, with the Fraser Coast Regional Council expected to begin planning and consultation in the coming months.
With population growth and tourism activity rising in Hervey Bay, local leaders see this investment as timely and forward-thinking—providing safer, more enjoyable and more sustainable ways for people to move through their community.
OUTDOOR LIVING SPECIALISTS
THE HERVEY Bay Golf Club was awash in a powerful sea of pink as the Fraser Coast Mates Annual Golf Day and The Flourish Garden, broke every record in its vibrant history, when they held the annual Golf Day on Friday June 20th.
On a day overflowing with community spirit, laughter, camaraderie, and heartfelt conversations, more than $40,000 was raised to support local mental health initiatives.
It was, without question, the biggest and most successful Golf Day since Fraser Coast Mates was founded nine years ago after the tragic loss of our mate Geoff Redpath, the day symbolising Geoff’s love of Golf, Mates and Pink shirts.
This year almost 200 Golfers took to the course, vying for the Geoff Redpath Memorial Trophy awarded to the team playing in the best ‘Spirit of the Day’, whilst 180 ladies stepped out for The Flourish Garden luncheon event, all a bold and colourful symbol of how a community united can change lives.
Fraser Coast Mates is a grassroots charity with a powerful mission, to support mental health and suicide prevention across the Fraser Coast by reducing stigma, encouraging conversations, and providing practical support to those who need it most.
Founded by locals for locals, the organisation continues to
grow through its deeply personal, community-driven approach.
“We were absolutely blown away by the support,” Fraser Coast Mates President Darren Bosley said.
“To raise over $40,000 in a single day shows not just the generosity of this community, but the growing
every dollar raised is part of a bigger movement.”
The event’s success would not have been possible without the support of its sponsors and volunteers.
Prime Agents returned as the proud presenting partner, with Principal Leah Quinn expressing heartfelt
understanding that we need to talk about mental health, and that we can have fun while doing it.”
Darren noted the significance of the event’s visual statement.
“When you looked across the course and saw that sea of pink, it wasn’t just a colour. It was a statement that we are here, together, for something that matters. Every swing, every laugh,
appreciation.
“We are truly humbled to walk alongside Fraser Coast Mates in this journey,” she said.
“To see how this event and the organisation have grown year on year is inspiring. This is more than a sponsorship, it’s a partnership grounded in community, hope, and making a real difference.”
Countless other local businesses, individuals, and volunteers contributed through prize donations, time, and sponsorships.
Darren emphasised that the event is only as strong as the people who power it.
“This doesn’t happen without our
committee. The hours they put in, the selfless commitment, it’s humbling.
They are the engine behind this whole movement.”
Fraser Coast Mates Patron Kim Redpath also reflected on the significance of the Golf Day and the organisations growing legacy.
“Fraser Coast Mates was formed in support of men’s mental health and
well being and creating a space where this topic is openly talked about. The evolution of FCM to also shine a light on women’s mental health and well being initiated the inclusion of The Flourish Garden to the day.”
“The support of this event each year is proof our community is willing to open up conversations around mental health and show one another that no one has to face mental health struggles alone.”
“Mental health and well being starts with you. As Mates we are here to create conversations and support one anther. Our message is consistent –check in on your mates and also check in on yourself.”
“If you need help, reach out to the support around you, and pick up the phone!”
“As the pink-clad players made their way around the course, cheered on by an equally enthusiastic crowd, it became clear that this was more than just a golf day.”
“It was a celebration of progress, a joyful affirmation that when a community comes together, no challenge is too big.”
Darren Bosley summed up the spirit of the day perfectly, “Every year, this gets bigger. But what really grows is the impact. We are making those harder conversations easier. We are breaking down stigma. And above all, we are doing it together.”

FOLLOWING our second successful industry networking event, Screen Fraser Coast is continuing to grow in numbers from our region, with new members being added weekly.
It was inspiring to hear from our guest speaker and committee member, Kevin Friesen on his journey in the stunt and film world, and refreshing to hear that there is no distinct path to take on this journey of making a film career; rather trust the journey and the bends it takes and let life’s experiences enrich and deepen your ability to connect to the creative within. Knowing at any age and stage, opportunity awaits.
We are thrilled to see people connecting and projects materialising as our film community connects and grows together.
Leading on from the networking buzz are various workshops that will spark the interest of the creatives in our region.
On July 13th we have our first Extras Acting Workshop for 2025 held at the iconic Z-PAC Theatre.
This workshop is inviting all those interested in
learning more about the industry and learning the basics of acting and on-set etiquette. You will also walk away with a free headshot to use in our database for extras and to put forward to other Extras Agencies.
Our next workshop held on July 17th, is a co-initiative
of Screen Fraser Coast and the Indigiverse and brings to our region the incredibly talented Scott Wilson to crack open the vault on diversity in writing, creativity and storytelling.
This is where every amateur and seasoned writer alike need to be, as it will undoubtedly add a new tool to your tool kit for making it as a writer in the film and arts industry.
And if those two workshops weren’t enough to wet your appetite, we have the legendary Stephen Hunter from the Hobbit film series coming to our region in August to bring the heat for our acting community.
With Q&As, intensive scene work and acting workshops designed to upskill your craft, Stephen Hunter will be here for a whole weekend, shaking things up on the Fraser Coast.
Screen Fraser Coast will host a location scouting workshop later in the year, most likely after our Inaugural Fraser Shorts Film Festival.
On that note, mark your calendars for October 24- 26th, and if you have a short film you’ve been itching to make, then get to it and submit that glorious work to our festival!

THIRTEEN boys from Urangan State High School have proudly completed the 10-week JTYouGotThis program, delivered by the JT Academy with expert guidance from Bernie Williams, Summer Knight, and Natalia Unsworth.
This early intervention program, proudly supported by Tanya Stevenson and her dedicated team at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, focuses on building resilience, self-confidence, and self-belief among young people.
Its main goal is to help participants strengthen their internal resilience, develop a positive identity, and empower them to make well-informed and constructive life choices.
Over the course of the 10 weeks, the students engaged in a variety of activities designed to help them explore their personal strengths and build new skills.
They learned how to approach challenges in a positive and proactive way, gaining valuable strategies to navigate everyday obstacles with confidence.
The practical and supportive nature of the program enabled the boys to recognise their own potential while developing
decision-making skills aligned with their values and long-term goals.
The success of the program is thanks in large part to the ongoing support from the Fraser Coast community.
The JT Academy has been able to run this initiative not only at Urangan State High School but also at Hervey Bay State High School over the past year, with plans to continue delivering the program well into 2026.
This community partnership has been crucial in extending the program’s reach, ensuring more young people benefit from its positive impact across the region.
Throughout the program, the boys demonstrated the JT Academy’s core values of self-belief, confidence, and courage.
They showed commitment by setting and working toward short-term goals and developed strong bonds with their peers. Together, they created a safe and supportive space that fostered new friendships and positive influence — a true reflection of the program’s powerful effect.
As they celebrated their graduation, the boys marked not only the completion of the program but also the start of a new chapter.
Equipped with resilience, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of self, they are now prepared to face future challenges with confidence. Their journey stands as a compelling example of the difference early intervention and community-backed programs can make in shaping the lives of young people.
THE HERVEY Bay Woodcrafts Club is inviting the community to get into the festive spirit early with their Christmas in July Sale, happening on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July 2025.
The event will run from 8am to 1pm on both days at the club’s workshop, located at 187 Bideford Street, Torquay.
This mid-year celebration promises a stunning collection of handcrafted wooden gifts, lovingly made by talented club members.
From fine boxes and furniture to fun, colourful décor pieces, there will be something to delight every visitor—whether you’re ticking off your Christmas shopping early or searching for a special, one-of-akind item.
“Our members freely create their pieces here, and generously donate some of their works to the sale. Proceeds from the sale help fund new equipment and other club expenses,” Jenny explained.
Adding to the festivities will be a sausage sizzle, making it a fun and tasty day out for the whole family.
Visitors will also find a selection of craft items and plants, perfect for gifting or adding a handmade touch to the home.
“Not every item will be Christmasthemed, but there will be plenty of unique gift options suitable for people of all ages,” Jenny said.
The event not only offers the
exceptional creativity of the club’s members, whose imaginative designs are a highlight of the event.
The Hervey Bay Woodcrafts Club is always open to new members aged 14 and up, offering a welcoming space to learn, create, and connect with others who share a passion for woodcraft. Jenny also highlighted the

TRAVEL between Hervey Bay and Brisbane is set to soar again, as Qantas reinstates early morning and evening flights from October.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the flights will depart Brisbane for Hervey Bay at 6:10pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with return services at 6:30am every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
“The return of these flights is fantastic news for the Fraser Coast,” he said.
“Early morning and evening services will make it easier than ever for residents and visitors to connect with both domestic and international markets via Brisbane.
“These flights also offer greater convenience for business travellers, enabling same-day return trips to Brisbane that align with typical working hours.
“The flights will launch in October and run as a trial through to the end of March 2026.
“I encourage residents to support this improved service - it’s a boost for tourism, business and the local economy, and a clear sign of growing confidence in our region.”

Nick Collie said the improved schedule will open up more opportunities for day trips to Brisbane as well as improving onward connections.

“The return of early morning and evening flights between Hervey Bay and Brisbane will make it easier for locals and visitors to travel, do business, and experience everything the idyllic Fraser Coast has to offer.”
Cr Seymour said this month also marks a major milestone for Jetstar - one full year of direct return flights connecting Hervey Bay and Melbourne.
“Over the past twelve months, this route has brought more than 50,000 visitors keen to explore iconic Fraser Coast experiences like K’gari, Lady Elliott Island, and humpback whale encounters,” he said.
“The route has proven so popular that Jetstar is set to increase flights from three to four return services a week from October - a clear sign

of strong demand from both Fraser Coast locals and Melburnians.
“This service has made it easier for more people to experience everything the Fraser Coast has to offer. It’s brought more visitors, more tourism dollars and more opportunities for our local businesses.
“To meet growing demand, Jetstar also recently announced it will also increase flights between Hervey Bay and Sydney from October, with daily services scheduled for the peak summer holiday season.
“The increased capacity on Jetstar’s Hervey Bay services will add over 38,000 low fare seats for travellers each year, making it easier than ever to explore the stunning Fraser Coast.
“It’s been an incredible 12 months, with Jetstar expanding services to Melbourne and Sydney, and Qantas enhancing its schedule to better support the needs of our growing region.
“Fraser Coast Regional Council and Fraser Coast Tourism and Events continue to work closely with Jetstar and Qantas to grow air connectivity and support tourism and business opportunities across the region.”

OUR SOCIETY is full of abundance — food and alcohol are everywhere, woven into daily routines. For some, they are enjoyed in moderation: food as vital nourishment, or alcohol as a celebratory or relaxing ritual. But for many, both can become tools of escape, numbness, or dependence. They’re used to fill a void, celebrate, drown out feelings, or cope with stress. Because these substances are so accessible and accepted, dependence can quietly take hold.
What makes this harder to recognise is that, unlike other addictions, food and alcohol are part of everyday life. You need food to survive, and alcohol often accompanies social gatherings. This makes recovery more complex, as abstinence isn’t always straightforward.
Remember, not all activities need to be surrounded by plates of food or alcohol. You can set yourself up for success by planning ahead: eat before social events so you’re not hungry, and avoid filling every environment with
tempting treats. Knowing when you’re most vulnerable allows you to stay strong. And you don’t have to be anyone’s entertainment — don’t feel pressured to over consume or drink just to make others comfortable. That’s not your responsibility.
If binge eating, drinking alone, or excessive use is a constant struggle, seeking help isn’t a weakness — it’s a step toward freedom. Hiding these issues only prolongs pain.
Reach out to trusted friends, family, or professionals.
Support groups, whether online or in person, remind you that you’re not alone and can share experiences to reduce shame.
Lifestyle changes, like
mindfulness, hobbies, or physical activity, support healing. Exercise releases endorphins — your natural mood boosters — and influences serotonin and cortisol, which regulate mood and stress.
Activities like strength training, cardio, swimming, or walking can help build resilience, reduce cravings, and bring calm and strength to your mind and body.
Be patient and kind to yourself. Celebrate small victories and accept setbacks as part of the process.
Surround yourself with supportive people who guide and uplift you.
Supporting others is just as important. If someone confides in you, listen without judgment, encourage their efforts, and respect their pace.
True friendship is about kindness, understanding, and hope.
Healing takes time. With support, a healthier, happier life is possible.

TWO major projects to protect Urangan’s coastline and preserve the historic Urangan Pier are now complete, making the area safer and more accessible for the community.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said restoration works had been carried out on the iconic Urangan Pier and a new rock revetment wall had been built along the Urangan foreshore.
“Construction began in November 2024 along the Urangan foreshore to extend the existing seawall 150 metres east of the Urangan Pier, aiming to protect the natural beach environment and reduce the risk of future damage to nearby infrastructure,” he said.
“Coastal protection is essential for the Fraser Coast, where our 112 kilometres of shoreline supports critical infrastructure and valuable community assets.
“The project involved excavation and earthworks, construction of the rock revetment wall, installation of a beach access staircase, and landscaping and revegetation to stabilise the area.
“Construction of the seawall required approximately 9,300 tonnes of rock, sourced from three different quarries, with some individual rocks weighing up to six tonnes each.
Cr O’Keefe said a six-wheel-drive articulated dump truck and a 38-tonne excavator were used to manoeuvre the massive rocks into place, building a structure that now stands about one metre higher than any other rock wall in Hervey Bay.
“This showcases the scale and durability of the structure, which has been engineered to withstand harsh coastal conditions and safeguard the foreshore well into the future.
“Council is grateful to the Australian Government for their generous $2.43 million funding contribution towards the $3.2 million project through their Coastal and Estuarine Risk Mitigation Program.”
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Kristy McBain said this project highlights the Albanese Government’s work to safeguard coastal communities and infrastructure.
“This $2.43 million federal investment will ease the minds of Fraser Coast residents knowing their community is getting the right support, with the scale of this project showing how serious our government is about reducing disaster risk,” Minister McBain said.
Cr O’Keefe said during construction, a 480-metre section of the beach was fenced off temporarily closing five formal beach access points.
“This project will help protect critical infrastructure from future erosion, ensuring the area remains resilient and accessible for years to come.
“The Urangan revetment wall officially opened to the community last week.”
Fraser Coast Regional Council has also been carrying out restoration work on the iconic pier since January 2025 to ensure it remains safe and can continue to be enjoyed for fishing, walking and sightseeing for generations to come.
Cr O’Keefe said the 868-metre Urangan Pier has stood for more than a century and was originally built to export sugar, coal and timber from the Fraser Coast to the world.
“Maintaining this much-loved landmark is a priority for Council so future generations can continue to enjoy it,” he said.
“The $1.43 million Urangan Pier rehabilitation works, funded through the State Government’s Works for Queensland program, included replacing and reinforcing damaged timber, installing new railings and kerbs, restoring heritage features, and repainting.”
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said the Queensland Government was delighted to work closely with Council to ensure this landmark can be enjoyed by locals and visitors well into the future.
“Ask any local and they’ll tell you that a visit to Hervey Bay is not complete without a stroll down the historic Urangan Pier.
The Urangan Pier rehabilitation works are proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s 2024-2027 Works for Queensland Program in association with Fraser Coast Regional Council.
“We’re proud to have been able to support this work to restore this beautiful pier and give the community back something that is so greatly loved.”
Council thanks all levels of government for their support in delivering these vital projects and remains committed to preserving the Fraser Coast’s unique natural and built environment for current and future generations.

AS A real estate principal in Hervey Bay, I have witnessed first-hand the growing frustration among aspiring first home buyers who feel locked out of the property market. With prices rising and savings often falling behind the pace of inflation, even buyers with strong incomes can find the deposit hurdle insurmountable.
However, there is some much-needed good news.
The Queensland Government has just announced a powerful new initiative aimed squarely at helping everyday Queenslanders into home ownership, in the form of a statefunded shared equity scheme; part of a broader multi-level effort in partnership with the Federal Government’s Help to Buy program.
Together, these schemes could reshape the path to property ownership for thousands of Australians.
The ‘Boost to Buy’ Program is a $165 million initiative, where the state government will partner with eligible first home buyers, contributing up to 30% of the purchase price for new homes, and 25% for existing homes, in exchange for a shared equity stake in the property.
struggling to meet strict lending criteria or large deposit requirements.
Cleverly, the eligibility criteria have been designed to be inclusive yet targeted and includes single applicants earning up to $150,000/year and dual applicants with a combined income up to $225,000/year
You will need a minimum 2% deposit and the property must be valued under $1 million.
shared equity.
Together, these policies could shave tens of thousands off the upfront and ongoing cost of home ownership.
The Queensland scheme aligns closely with the Federal Help to Buy program, already legislated and set to roll out nationally in late 2025.
The Commonwealth will offer up to 40% equity for new homes and up to 30% for existing homes. Income thresholds under that scheme were recently raised to $100k for singles and $160k for couples and to 40,000 places will be offered nationally over four years
As the buyer, you must live in the property as your principal place of residence.
For example, if you are purchasing a new home for $750,000, and you have saved a 2% deposit ($15,000), the government could contribute up to $225,000, reducing the amount you need to borrow from a bank by nearly a third.
This makes home ownership significantly more attainable for buyers
But this is just a part of the overall landscape for first home buyers. The shared equity scheme doesn’t stand alone, it can be combined with other state and federal first home buyer incentives.
These are wide and varied and include a $30,000 First Home Owner Grant (for new builds), Stamp Duty abolished for eligible first home buyers purchasing newly built homes, and no Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) when using
In my view, the real strength of this scheme lies in what it represents, a genuine collaboration between buyers and government, lowering the barriers to entry in a way that still encourages responsible financial planning. By requiring a modest deposit and income cap, the scheme targets aspirational buyers, not speculative investors. And with provisions in place for buyers to purchase the government’s share later, or simply sell and repay at that time, it offers flexibility without undue risk.
We are watching these changes closely, and will be assisting eligible buyers every step of the way, from exploring grant options, to finding the right home.
If you or someone you know is thinking about buying their first home, I would encourage you to reach out. There has never been a better time to start planning.
POINT Vernon is fast becoming one of the region’s most sought-after suburbs, and for good reason. With a population of just over 5,700, it offers a relaxed coastal lifestyle, generous parklands, and proximity to the heart of Hervey Bay.
The suburb has seen a strong annual growth rate of over 10.7%, driven by limited housing supply, rising buyer demand, and renewed investor interest. The median house price now sits at $668,000, with a three-bedroom home averaging $630,000, you can expect to pay around $722,500 on average for a four-bedroom home and five-bedroom homes reaching up to $935,000.
Factor in anything close to the beach or on the Esplanade and the value is higher.
Rental yields are healthy at 4.7%, with weekly rents between $600 and $650. Frequently, there are fewer than ten homes available for rent at any given time, making it attractive for investors.
Point Vernon appeals to a mix of retirees, professionals, and families seeking space, lifestyle, and value. The suburb has a median age of 52, and many residents are long-term locals, reflecting a stable, established community.
Locals enjoy coastal walking tracks, rock pools, whale watching, and stunning sunsets. With shops, schools, hospitals, and Stockland Hervey Bay just minutes away, convenience meets calm.
For buyers, there is still value in the $600k to $700k range, while upsizers will find quality four- and five-bedroom homes without venturing into capital city prices. For sellers, record growth offers a prime time to list.

IN HERVEY Bay, Lynda Eadie is known for her warm smile, caring nature, and unmistakable love of hats. As manager of the Hervey Bay Hat Co., there’s nothing she enjoys more than seeing a customer’s eyes light up when they discover the perfect hat. “I really love what I do,” she says. “I feel incredibly fortunate.”
But behind the hats and happy moments is a deeper story. Like all of us, Lynda has her own life journey, and here, she opens up and shares just a small part of it.
Born in Toowoomba, Lynda’s start in life wasn’t easy. Her mother was just fifteen when Lynda arrived. Her father left when she was only two, and her only sister was born. Then came some of the happiest memories as the family moved in with her grandparents while her mum went out to work.
But by age six, Lynda’s family moved out on their own, and a few years later, things took a turn for the worse with extreme domestic violence, which they experienced for twelve years.
The trauma from those years has never truly faded. It’s an experience that fuels her ongoing advocacy for open discussions around domestic violence.
Lynda remembers playing street tennis with her sister and neighbourhood kids until the sun went down and cherishes the loving influence of her grandparents, particularly her grandmother, who remains one of her greatest role models.
Like many teens of the time, Lynda left school at fifteen. Her first job was in a health food shop, before moving into administration, which for her
family, was considered “Hitting the big time.” Without formal qualifications, Lynda built a strong career by mainly learning on the job.
At twenty, she moved out with her boyfriend, who later became her first husband. In 1993, they settled in Hervey Bay, but the marriage ended three years later. In 1998, Lynda remarried into a local farming family and had two children, now aged 26 and 24, who are the loves of her life.
Then, in 2007, life took a sudden turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, two years after first discovering a lump that a doctor had dismissed. When her nipple became inverted, the cancer was detected, which led to a mastectomy a week later.
Lynda and her husband were determined to keep things ‘normal’ for their young children, then just five
and seven, she continued with school drop-offs and weekend soccer games, all while undergoing six months of gruelling chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation in Nambour, as the treatment wasn’t available in Hervey Bay Back then. “Losing my hair was harder than losing my breast,” she recalls. Watching her children day to day made the battle one she could get through.
Today, Lynda lives with lymphedema, a lifelong condition caused by the removal of lymph nodes. It’s managed with compression garments, massage, and a positive mindset.
Five years later, Lynda was taken off Tamoxifen, a hormone-blocking drug, after experiencing severe headaches. A precautionary MRI revealed a benign brain tumour, unrelated to her breast cancer. The
resulting craniotomy left her with 36 staples across her scalp.
In 2014, Lynda and her second husband separated. They remain committed co-parents and have a strong, respectful relationship.
Outside of work, Lynda enjoys live blues music and adores her two dogs and seven chooks. Becoming an empty nester has been emotional and lonely at times. “You’re always a mum, whether they like it or not,” she says, smiling. “But when they leave, it’s hard not to feel a bit lost.”
But through it all, Lynda has never lost sight of the values instilled by her grandmother, kindness above all. “If you can’t be kind, don’t say it.” It’s a mantra she tries to follow every day.
Now, at fifty-nine, Lynda says she has no regrets. “I’ve had struggles, sure. But I’ve also had incredible joy and love my life.”

YOU MIGHT NEVER MEET THEM BUT YOU MIGHT HELP THEM STAY
Every home we sell, helps us to support the amazing work done by Fraser Coast Mates. A portion of each sale empowers the important work they do in the community we all share.
Fraser Coast Mates was formed in 2018 by a group of local business people who were concerned by the rise of debilitating mental health issues and rising suicide rates across our region.
They are a local organisation on the Fraser Coast that aims to build local awareness and grow conversations about mental wellbeing by bridging the gap between those suffering and the
local support services available and ultimately making progress for suicide prevention.
Their number one goal is to encourage mates to be better equipped to help their mates and colleagues in times of struggle by telling local stories, helping mates gain clarity around what services are available locally and coordinating community events.
