FROM a coffee shop reimagined as a training ground for inclusive employment to a ParaMatildas footballer and a local artist whose hand-painted rocks spark connection in our parks – the 2025 Fraser Coast Ability Awards celebrated practical inclusion in action across our community.
Fraser Coast Inclusive Access Advisory Committee Chair Cr John Weiland said the awards celebrate the achievements of people with disability and those who help build a more inclusive, supportive community.
“Our winners and nominees show how inclusion happens - on the job, on the field, in classrooms and at community events. They’re removing barriers, opening doors and creating opportunities so more people can belong and thrive on the Fraser Coast,” Cr Weiland said.
“Thank you to everyone who nominated, supported and took part today. Together, we’re building

Fraser Coast’s awardwinning WetSide Water Park has reopened for the 2025/26 season, now offering Aqua Ninja for free.
Mayor George Seymour said
the popular water play feature, which recorded over 6,000 runs in its first season, would see increased community use and simplified operations while remaining safe.
“WetSide is the ultimate place to cool off, with thrilling slides, a dedicated water play area, TotSide for little ones, and now a free Aqua Ninja activity,” Cr Seymour said.
Last season welcomed 150,000 visitors, with school holidays the busiest period.
WetSide is open 10am–5pm, Wednesdays to Sundays during school terms, and daily during school holidays. Entry is free; waterslides cost $8 for 10 rides.

ROADS in Point Vernon, Scarness and Pialba will get a fresh asphalt surface, making everyday trips smoother and safer for motorists, cyclists and local residents.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Roads spokesperson Cr Denis Chapman said the works target busy sections of roads that have worn over time.
“These road resurfacing works are about making everyday travel quieter, safer and easier - whether you’re doing the school run, commuting to work or heading to the shops,” he said.
The $2.3 million package will renew sections of Torquay Road, Taylor Street, Murphy Street, Anchorage Circuit, Spinnaker Drive, and North Street across Hervey Bay. Day works will be performed where possible, and night work will be performed on the
busiest stretches to keep traffic moving and limit disruption to businesses.
“Crews will start in Point Vernon on Murphy Street, North Street, Anchorage Circuit and Spinnaker Drive, before moving into Scarness and Pialba,” Cr Chapman said.
Torquay Road (Zephyr Street to Queens Road) in Scarness will be resurfaced during the day early October, said Cr Chapman.
“The busier sections in Pialba - Torquay Road (Zephyr to Hunter) and Taylor Street (Andrew to Hillyard)are scheduled as night works from Sunday 5 October for about two-and-a-half to three weeks, Sundays to Thursdays, 6 pm to 5 am.”
Cr Chapman said the community’s patience would help ensure the work gets done safely and quickly.
“Please slow down in work zones, follow traffic controllers and allow a little extra time,” he said.
“Most sites will operate with reduced speeds and singlelane traffic. On two narrow streets, Anchorage Circuit and North Street, there will be short full closures at times.”
Residents and nearby businesses will receive letterbox notices from the contractor before work starts in their street.
Asphalt resurfacing is targeted for completion by the end of October, weather permitting. Line marking and the traffic-light sensors under the road will be reinstated after resurfacing is finished.
“These short works will bring long-term benefitsfewer pothole repairs, safer intersections and a better ride across some of our busiest local roads,” Cr Chapman said.
THE HERVEY Bay electorate office for Federal Member for Hinkler David Batt has officially opened, providing a new connection point for locals to raise concerns, seek assistance and engage directly with their representative.
Leader of the Nationals David Littleproud said it was an exciting day for Hervey Bay, with Mr Batt making it crucial to have as much community engagement and feedback as possible from locals.
“This office opening isn’t just about David Batt but about the people of Hervey Bay, who deserve to have their voices heard,” Mr Littleproud said.
“We are proud to have Mr Batt as part of our team, after serving the community for much of his working life; 23 years as a police officer, 10 years as a Councillor and Deputy Mayor, from 2017 to 2020 as the State MP for Bundaberg, and as Council’s Community Resilience and Disaster Management Coordinator.
“This new office will cement Mr Batt as a hard-working Federal MP for the area, who listens to everyone.”
The newly elected Hinkler
MP said he was excited to deliver on an election commitment to provide this essential service for the Fraser Coast.
“I will fight for all across the diverse electorate of Hinkler,” Mr Batt said.
“The very first official correspondence I sent, following my successful election in May, was a letter to the Special Minister of State seeking permission for a satellite office to be established in Hervey Bay.”
The electorate of Hinkler stretches from Bundaberg to Hervey Bay and covers a diverse region. There are more than 62,000 constituents in the southern part of the electorate, including the townships of Aldershot, Torbanlea, Howard, Burrum Heads, Pacific Haven, Toogoom, River Heads and the major centre of Hervey Bay.
The new office will help constituents access Federal Government services and provide support with issues relating to Centrelink, veterans affairs, immigration, taxation and other Commonwealth matters.
Located at Shop 3/63 Torquay Road, Pialba (between Tackleworld and Cartridge World), the office will be open Monday to Friday.
Constituents can request appointments with Mr Batt by phoning the Hervey Bay office on 4128 3461.

ENTRIES have officially opened for the inaugural Hervey Bay Half Marathon Festival, which will be held on Sunday, 21 June 2026.
The new event is set to showcase the Fraser Coast with a fast and scenic course, designed to attract runners, walkers and families from across the region and beyond.
Organisers say the festival will not only highlight the natural beauty of Hervey Bay but also provide an inclusive sporting opportunity for people of all ages and abilities.
The program will feature a 21.1km half marathon as the headline event, alongside a 10km race, a 5km run, a 5km walk and a 2km mini marathon.
By offering a variety of distances, the festival aims to cater for both experienced athletes chasing personal bests and newcomers looking for a more relaxed introduction to community running.
Strong community interest has already been reported, with local groups, schools and sporting clubs expected to be well represented on the day.
The festival is backed by the Fraser Coast Regional Council and McDonald’s, providing the event with key partnerships to ensure its long-term growth.
Organisers are encouraging early registrations, noting that Super Early Bird rates are available for those who sign up in advance.
Places are expected to fill quickly, particularly for the half marathon, which has already drawn enquiries from interstate participants.
The course is expected to appeal to those seeking a competitive edge, while also offering a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for first-time entrants.
The Hervey Bay Half Marathon Festival is being positioned as more than just a race. It is seen as an opportunity to promote healthy living, boost community spirit
and attract visitors to the Fraser Coast.
Local businesses, cafés and accommodation providers are also expected to benefit from the influx of participants and spectators, with the festival timed to take advantage of the mild winter conditions in the region.
Entries can be made online, with full details available at https://herveybayhalfmarathon. com.au/
With June 2026 now on the horizon, the countdown is underway for an event organisers hope will become a permanent highlight on Queensland’s running calendar.

CROWNS & BRIDGES
THE FUTURE of the Torquay Caravan Park remains one of the most hotly debated issues on the Fraser Coast, but according to Hervey Bay’s State Member David Lee, the community is virtually united in its opposition to any plan to close it.
“I have not met anyone who is in favour of closing the Torquay Caravan Park,” Mr Lee told the Hervey Bay Advertiser.
“From small business owners to long-time residents and visiting families, the message is the same: this park is central to the life of our region.”
Mr Lee, the son of small business owners and a former solicitor and CEO, also brings the perspective of someone who served as the Fraser Coast Regional Councilor for Division 9 (Torquay) from 2020 to 2024.
With this background, he says he has seen firsthand the critical role tourism plays in sustaining the Fraser Coast economy.
“Torquay thrives on its connection to tourism. When people stay at the Caravan Park, they don’t just pay for a site, they pay for dinners at local restaurants, coffees in our cafés, tickets to attractions, fuel at our service stations, and groceries at local supermarkets. Every single night’s stay multiplies across our economy.”
This multiplier effect is borne out
by industry research.
The Queensland Tourism Annual Report 2024 shows that nearly $700 million in direct revenue flowed into the Fraser Coast economy last year from tourism activity. Around 3,000 people are employed locally in tourism and related industries.
inject close to $3,000 into the local economy before even factoring in tours to Fraser Island (K’gari), whale watching cruises, or fishing charters.
“When you add this up across the thousands of bed nights the park provides annually, you are talking about tens of millions of dollars
through lockdowns and years of disruption are only just now regaining their footing. To take away their backbone trade from the caravan park would be to pull the rug out from under them just as they are standing tall again.”
Caravan and camping stays make up a significant slice of that figure, with industry estimates suggesting that every night spent in a caravan park translates to between $90 and $120 spent in the surrounding community.
A family of four staying a week at the Torquay Caravan Park might
directly linked to the local businesses that depend on these visitors.”
The risk to long-term recovery, Mr Lee warned, is particularly concerning in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, when so many businesses along the Esplanade struggled simply to survive.
“The same businesses that fought
Unlike COVID, which was temporary and accompanied by government support, a permanent closure of the Torquay Caravan Park would represent an irreversible economic blow.
the character of the Bay. You risk becoming a place that is less welcoming to families, grey nomads, and budget travelers, the very groups who sustain us year-round.”
He pointed out that K’gari and whale watching are major drawcards, but accommodation choices are equally important.
“We cannot expect tourists to come for the whales or the island if they cannot find a place to stay that suits their budget and lifestyle.”
Mr Lee said that in conversations with numerous businesses along the Esplanade, both in Torquay and beyond, he has yet to find a single supporter of the park’s closure.
“The opposition has been overwhelming and, to date, uncontested,” he stressed.
“I’ve heard from hoteliers, publicans, tour operators, and retailers. They all say the same thing; closing the Torquay Caravan Park will harm their livelihoods.”
“If the park goes, nothing will replace the lost business. Once gone, those visitors will not simply reappear in another form.”
Looking to the broader tourism implications, Mr Lee said the park is essential to Hervey Bay’s appeal.
“Hervey Bay is marketed as a family-friendly, affordable destination. Caravan parks are central to that offering. If you begin removing them, you change
For Mr Lee, the issue is not only about economics but also about identity.
“Hervey Bay has always been a place where families camp by the beach, grandparents bring their caravans, and friends gather for affordable holidays. That’s our story, and Torquay Caravan Park is a living part of it. To erase it would be to erase a piece of who we are.”

Delivering for Queensland
FRASER Coast audiences are in for a chilling theatrical experience this October as Z-PAC Theatre presents Misery, adapted by William Goldman from Stephen King’s acclaimed novel.
Running from 10–26 October, the production promises edge-of-your-seat suspense in an intimate community theatre setting.
Directed by Jonathan Canning—who impressed audiences last year with Tracks—Misery brings together a powerhouse local cast.
Kyle Davis stars as novelist Paul Sheldon, whose life takes a terrifying turn after a car accident leaves him in the care of his self-proclaimed “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, played by Katie O’Neill.
Stuart Waters joins the cast in a pivotal supporting role as the Sheriff.
For Kyle, stepping into Paul’s shoes has been both challenging and rewarding, “Paul is a character who has to summon resilience in the face of fear. Playing him means finding that strength while also showing his vulnerability—it’s a thrilling challenge as an actor.”
Katie says bringing Annie Wilkes to life requires walking a fine line, “Annie is infamous
for a reason. She’s terrifying, yes, but she’s also complex and human. My job is to show both sides so the audience is unsettled, but also fascinated by her.”
A major highlight will be the striking set created by a team led by Roger Jennings. Built with incredible attention to detail, the set recreates Annie Wilkes’ isolated home, immersing audiences in the claustrophobic tension of the play.
Jonathan says this production is an exciting chance for Z-PAC to push creative boundaries, “Misery is
about more than scares—it’s about tension, psychology, and human fragility. We want it to be an unforgettable experience.”
With limited performances and strong anticipation already building, all are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.
Misery runs at Z-PAC Theatre from 10–26 October with shows on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday matinees.
Tickets are available now through the theatre’s website zpactheatre.com.au

THE 2025 Star Gala Staff Awards was a glittering celebration of the people at the heart of Fraser Coast Disability Services (FCDS).
Held at the Hervey Bay Boat Club, the event brought together staff and families to honour the everyday superstars whose compassion, resilience and commitment change lives across the Fraser Coast.
With live entertainment, fine dining and plenty of excitement, the evening recognised staff achievements across five award categories.
Awards were presented for Leadership, Innovation, Rising Star, Teamwork, and Outstanding Contribution –each highlighting a different way staff members bring the organisation’s vision to life.
More than just an awards ceremony, the Star Gala was a chance to pause, reflect and celebrate the values of Purpose, Joy and Independence that guide every aspect of the organisation.
Guests applauded as stories were shared of staff who go above and beyond, bringing care, creativity and strength to their work every day.
For Director Josie, the night was about honouring the team above all else, “Tonight
isn’t just another event, it’s a celebration of you – our team, our people, our everyday superstars. You’re the heart of the organisation, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” she told staff during her address.
The heart Josie referred to is one that beats across every service Fraser Coast Disability Services offers –from supported independent living and in home care to community support, respite, social opportunities and coordination.
Staff are the driving force behind empowering people with disability to “design their best life,” ensuring that the founding values are lived every day in homes and communities
across the region.
The organisation itself began from a deeply personal place, when Josie recognised the lack of support available for one of her family members and chose to create a service that would fill the gap.
The annual Star Gala recognises the dedication and spirit of staff who bring the Fraser Coast Disability Services vision to life.
More than a night of awards, it is an expression of gratitude to those whose daily efforts shape a stronger, more inclusive community – and a reminder that behind every service delivered is a team of people working with purpose, joy and independence.
PARENTING has never been easy, but today’s mums, dads, and carers are facing pressures that previous generations could hardly imagine.
From the rising cost of living to the demands of work, study, and family commitments, parents on the Fraser Coast are juggling more than ever before.
While the focus often falls on children’s wellbeing, many parents quietly shoulder their own mental health struggles.
Stress, anxiety, and exhaustion can easily creep in, leaving parents feeling like they are running on empty.
Experts say that acknowledging and addressing these challenges is vital - not only for adults’ wellbeing, but also for raising resilient kids.
One of the most powerful things parents can do is model healthy coping strategies.
Children watch how we respond to stress; when they see us practising selfcare, setting boundaries, or reaching out for help, they learn that it’s okay to take
care of themselves too.
Simple steps like regular exercise, open conversations, journaling, or mindfulness can make a big difference.
Community connections also play a role. Whether it’s joining a playgroup, regular walk-and-talks, talking with other parents at school pick-
and online, there are many services designed to support parents directly, from counselling and wellbeing programs to workshops that help them manage stress and build coping strategies.
By looking after their own mental health, parents are better equipped to guide their children through challenges. These resources aim to empower families as a whole, reminding parents that caring for their mental health is not selfish - it’s essential.
up, or seeking professional support, staying connected helps reduce isolation.
Importantly, parents don’t have to be perfect.
Resilience in kids doesn’t come from never facing problems, it comes from knowing they can get through challenges with support and encouragement.
Across the Fraser Coast
As our community continues to navigate uncertain times, one message is clear: when parents look after themselves, children thrive.
Supporting parents and carers to manage their own wellbeing is an investment not just in individual families, but in the future resilience of the Fraser Coast.
THE POPULATION of humpback whales along Australia’s east coast has reached a “remarkable” milestone, with preliminary estimates suggesting more than 50,000 whales were present by 2024.
Research led by University of the Sunshine Coast Adjunct Fellow Dr Wally Franklin and Dr Lyndon Brooks indicates that the population has continued to grow at a consistently high rate since the last major estimate in 2015.
Dr Brooks described the recovery as “remarkable,” noting that growth has remained strong, only slightly slower than the rapid increases recorded prior to 2015.
Dr Franklin and Dr Brooks plan to submit their research for peer review and present their findings to the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee.
Their estimates have also been provided to the Federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
The researchers calculated annual population size and growth rates using a modified capture-recapture model and photo data collected through the Citizen Science platform
Happywhale.com.
The platform employs a pattern-matching algorithm to identify individual whales by their unique tail flukes.
“The availability of photo data on Happywhale stretches all the way back to 1984 and includes high-quality tail fluke images from over 15,000 individual whales,” Dr Brooks said.
Dr Franklin highlighted the critical role citizen scientists played in the research, “When whaling ceased in the 1960s, there were estimated to be as few as 150 humpbacks left on the east coast,” he said.
“Now, we have data spanning the full length of the coastline, from Queensland down to Tasmania, covering thousands of individual whales.”
He added that 683 contributors – including researchers, tourism operators, and members of the public – uploaded photos that were incorporated into the dataset.
“We want to thank each of them for the crucial part they’ve played in this work.
Citizen scientists using resources like Happywhale are helping ensure this research continues.”
The findings, while preliminary, offer an encouraging sign for the conservation of one of Australia’s most iconic marine species. As Dr Brooks says, the east coast humpback population is now a powerful example of how protection and public involvement can deliver extraordinary results.

FRASER Coast dog owners are reminded to renew their dog registrations by the end of October, with renewal notices arriving over the next few weeks.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Animal Management spokesperson Cr John Weiland said annual dog registration is both a legal requirement and a practical way to look after pets and people.
“Having a dog brings a lot of joy, but it also comes with responsibilities,” he said.
“Registration means we can reunite your dog with you faster, reduce the number of strays, and helps fund the services our community relies on – from compliance and dog attack investigations to our pounds, adoption centre, fenced off-leash areas and responsible pet care programs.
“Please keep an eye out for your notice, check your details are current and renew on time.”
First time dog registrations are free, and renewals are $42 for dogs that are desexed and microchipped.
Dogs must be registered from twelve weeks of age and within 14 days of owners moving to the Fraser Coast.
Residents can pay online via Council’s PayNow portal at https://www.frasercoast.qld. gov.au/pay-a-bill, in person
at Council Customer Service Centres, by phone with a credit card or by post with a cheque. Australia Post payments will not be available this October.
Dog registration renewal notices were issued late September and are expected to start reaching letterboxes by early October. Renewals are due by 31 October.
Keeping registrations up to date is also a safeguard should a pet ever go missing, as it ensures records are current and staff can quickly trace ownership.
Registration also plays an important role in encouraging responsible pet ownership across the region, helping
reduce problems caused by unregistered or roaming animals.
By renewing on time, residents contribute to the upkeep of facilities such as dog parks, provide funding for adoption and rehoming programs, and support community education initiatives that promote safe and healthy interactions between people and animals.
Maintaining registration also reflects a commitment to community safety and animal welfare.
More information about dog registration is available at https://www.frasercoast.qld. gov.au/animals-and-pets

THE 2025 Fraser Coast Dunga Derby has reached a major milestone, raising more than $5 million since the charity’s inception and supporting over 400 families in need.
Organised by Rally for a Cause, the annual event provides vital assistance to local families facing life-limiting medical conditions, ensuring help is available during some of the most challenging times of their lives.
This year, 55 teams embarked on the four-day journey across the Fraser Coast, driving uniquely decorated vehicles known as “Dungas.”
Along the way, participants took part in a variety of fundraising activities including raffles, gala dinners, and community BBQs.
The funds raised remain within the Fraser Coast region, providing both practical and financial support to families navigating difficult circumstances.
Fraser Coast residents, sponsors, and supporters have played a crucial role in the event’s success.
Rally for a Cause representatives expressed their gratitude, highlighting that the achievements of the Dunga Derby would not be possible without the collaboration of the community and the tireless efforts of the teams involved.
A key highlight of this year’s event was the release of the 2025 “Dunga Dusted” video.
The video celebrates the journey of the participants, showcasing their commitment and camaraderie while emphasising the direct impact of the charity’s work on local families. It also serves as a tribute to the sponsors, supporters, and community members whose generosity continues to make the event possible.
Since its inception, the Fraser Coast Dunga Derby has grown into one of the region’s most anticipated charity events. Its success demonstrates the power of community spirit and collaboration in creating meaningful change.
By raising both funds and awareness, the event strengthens
local support networks and provides a platform for families to access essential assistance when they need it most.
Rally for a Cause organisers said they are proud of what the Dunga Derby has achieved and remain committed to supporting families in the Fraser Coast region.
With the continued support of the community, sponsors, and participants, they look forward to building on this milestone in future events, ensuring that even more families receive the help they need.

THREE years ago, Millie Hujber was like any other 17 year old. She filled her days with dance, gym sessions and schoolwork, living the busy life of a teenager. But after a routine medical procedure, everything changed in an instant.
“I had a bit of excessive bleeding so my wonderful GP did a blood test, then we got the call to say you need to come in,” Millie recalled.
That call revealed her kidney function had fallen to just 20 percent. Within a week, the family was plunged into discussions about a transplant.
Her mother, Vanessa, a Nurse Unit Manager at Hervey Bay Hospital, said the shock was overwhelming.
“We went from thinking she was this perfectly healthy teenager to hearing she needed a transplant.
There was no warning, no signs. It was like the floor disappeared from under us.”
Doctors eventually discovered Millie’s kidney failure stemmed from a spontaneous genetic mutation. “They told us she was born with it,” Vanessa said. “The doctors were surprised she had even made it this far without being sick.”
For three years, Millie lived in limbo — too sick to enjoy life, but not yet ill enough for dialysis.
“Some days I would be so tired, I’d just crash and cry out of nowhere,” she said. Eventually, she had to give up work.
Vanessa never hesitated to offer her kidney. “I gave birth to her once and giving her my kidney felt like giving her life again.”
After delays caused by illness and even a cyclone, the surgery went
ahead in June at Princess Alexandra Hospital. “I was so nervous,” Millie said. “I was physically sick not because of my surgery but just watching my mum get ready.”
Vanessa was calm. “All I wanted was for her to get on that table and receive my gift. That’s all that mattered.”
Now, Millie is back home with her beloved pets, taking anti-rejection medication and slowly reclaiming her future. “I want to study nursing and paramedicine,” she said.
Vanessa carries her scar proudly. “She’s marked me twice in the same place first when I gave birth, and now with this scar from giving her my kidney.”
For Millie, it’s simple: “This is my second chance and I’m not wasting it.”
TWO decades ago, Debbie Nielsen never imagined her name would be recognised on a national stage.
When she first moved to Queensland, she worked long, thankless shifts cleaning at a nursing home. But one glance at a “for sale” sign on a Hervey Bay bakery would change the course of her life.
With no background in baking or business, Debbie and her husband Darren decided to take a leap of faith and purchase The Cheesecake Shop Hervey Bay.
What started as a daunting challenge quickly became a story of determination, resilience, and community spirit.
Today, 23 years later, Debbie has transformed the store into a thriving local hub and has just been named the winner of The Cheesecake Shop’s
Culture Champion Award.
Chosen from more than 250 stores across Australia and New Zealand, the award recognises her exceptional leadership, business acumen, and commitment to the community.
Community involvement has always been central to Debbie’s journey.
This year, her Hervey Bay team raised the most donations nationwide for the Make-AWish campaign, supporting a family and their young daughter Quinn.
“Community means everything to us — without their support, we simply wouldn’t be here,” Debbie said. Her efforts extend far beyond fundraising campaigns. Over the years, she has quietly donated cakes for memorials, supported countless charity events, and created
centrepieces for weddings and birthdays that have become lasting memories for local families.
In 2017, her hard work and dedication earned her the title of Franchisee of the Year, further cementing her reputation as both a skilled business operator and a compassionate community member.
From cleaner to cake decorator to Culture Champion, Debbie’s story is a reminder that passion and perseverance can turn even the most unlikely beginnings into something extraordinary.

The event will run from the start of October until 31 October 2025, Seniors Month will feature more than 40 events and activities across the Fraser Coast and online to celebrate the vital contributions older adults make to our community.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Senior Liaison Officer Juls De Waard said there was something for everyone, with open days, concerts, mystery bus trips, a photographic competition, the Mayor’s Picnic and the ever-popular Seniors Talent Quest.
“Seniors Month offers a calendar full of fun and affordable activities where people over 50 can connect, participate, be recognised and, most importantly, enjoy themselves,” Ms De Waard said.
Maryborough residents won’t miss out either, with MADCOTA coordinating a range of fun and informative activities, including the Mayoral Heritage Morning
Tea at the Brolga Theatre, as well as a spring concert and a ballroom dance.
“New events and activities include online fitness classes and a special podcast series on FM 107.5 Community Radio that celebrates our seniors - ordinary people with extraordinary stories,” she said.
“Everyone has a story to tell, and these local tales promise to be funny, moving, and inspirational. You can tune in live or catch up later by downloading the podcast.
“The jam-packed month of events is a great opportunity for anyone over 50 to meet new people and engage with the community.
“Isolation and loneliness are huge issues, so I am hoping that during October these events will encourage people to get out of the house, celebrate and connect with others.”

THE RECOVERY LOUNGE IS MOVING TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD HIVE
HBNC are excited to share that the Recovery Lounge is moving to its new home at the Neighbourhood Hive with some exciting new additions to rebrand as; The Neighbourhood Lounge.
Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re thrilled to continue offering a welcoming, supportive space for creation and connection.
Bring along your coffee and snacks and enjoy a space that’s all about community.
THE CLINK of teacups and the hum of community spirit will fill the Waterfront Restaurant on October 18, as locals gather for a High Tea fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) as part of the national Oceans to Outback campaign.
Organiser Dr Mindy Thorpe, owner of Barefoot Pilates Studio, is aiming to attract more than 150 people to this year’s event, after a hugely successful debut in 2024 drew 105 attendees.
“The Flying Doctor has been there for my family during some of our most difficult times,” Dr Mindy said.
“This is my way of giving back to an organisation that has literally helped save my husband’s life.”
Over the past three years, Dr Mindy’s husband has required urgent care in Brisbane on several occasions. Each time, the RFDS has stepped in to provide critical transport and support.
This year marks the third year Dr Mindy has been fundraising as part of a dedicated team, which includes Gill, Liz, Jean, Lisa, Ann, and Carolyn.
by walking, running, or riding during October—and they can even create their own challenge. There are three suggested distances, each with a special meaning:
• 42 km represents 1 km for every 1,000 Australians who can’t easily access basic healthcare, about 1.3 km per day.
• 87 km represents 1 km for every Flying Doctor aircraft across Australia, about 2.6 km per day.
• 97 km represents 1 km for every year the RFDS has been providing life-saving care, about 3.1 km per day.
“No matter which distance you choose, the idea is to challenge yourself while raising vital funds to support the RFDS and the communities it helps,” Dr Mindy said.
“It’s a great way to get fit, have fun, and make a real difference.”
The High Tea promises more than just scones and finger sandwiches.
festive backdrop, adding to the sense of community and celebration.
Representatives from the Bundaberg RFDS base will attend as guest speakers, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the lifesaving work they do across Queensland.
A local doctor from Hervey Bay Hospital, who regularly relies on RFDS services, is also expected to speak, highlighting just how vital the service is for regional communities.
The RFDS, which provides critical medical care to the Hervey Bay region, has launched Oceans to Outback to rally community support nationwide.
Every dollar raised at the High Tea will help the service continue its work, ensuring that distance is no barrier to healthcare.
THE HERVEY Bay Aquatic Centre has officially reopened its lagoon following a booked-out pool party that welcomed locals back to the upgraded facility.
Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor Sara Faraj said the strong community turnout showed how much the centre means to the region.
“Today was a fantastic celebration for families, clubs and casual swimmers,” Cr Faraj said.
“The lagoon is open, the new play features are a hit, and the whole precinct is more comfortable and functional for everyone.
“These works deliver modern amenities, better shade and lighting, and more for kids to do. It is a real lift for liveability and for our local swim clubs.”
The redevelopment was delivered in two stages over 18 months at a cost of $9.6 million, supported by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program, which contributed $3.557 million.
Member for Hervey Bay
David Lee said the funding ensures communities like Hervey Bay’s enjoy modern, attractive, and safe facilities for years to come.
“In the Sunshine State, we know how popular the local pool is, and this aquatic centre has features that will keep kids and families entertained throughout our hot summer months now and into the future,” he said.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the project reinforced the importance of public spaces that encourage healthy, active lifestyles.
“Local governments provide a wide range of infrastructure like roads, sewerage treatment plants and water supply systems; but we also need to make sure that we are
building public spaces that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle,” Cr Seymour said.
The upgrades are part of the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre’s masterplan and follow recent improvements to the indoor pool.
“Over the past few years we have built a range of recreational infrastructure such as pump tracks, skating parks, and playgrounds that are focused on keeping young people active, so they can be healthy in body and mind,” Cr Seymour said.
“We want to ensure that people of all ages can live an active, happy and healthy lifestyle here in our community.”

MORE than 70 Fraser Coast residents proudly pledged their commitment to Australia at a special ceremony in Maryborough as part of Australian Citizenship Day.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said this year marked the 76th anniversary of Australian citizenship, with today’s ceremony in Maryborough one of hundreds held across the country, welcoming thousands of new citizens nationwide.
“Our new citizens on the Fraser Coast range in age from three to 79 and were born in 16 different countries,” he said.
“Australian Citizenship Day is not only a chance for new citizens to embrace their future, but also a day for all Australians, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on what it means to belong.
“Since the first citizenship ceremony in 1949, more than six million people from over 200 countries have become Australian citizens. Today, more than half of all Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was.
“Citizenship provides us with a shared identity and a sense of belonging, while allowing us to celebrate the many cultures, traditions and stories that strengthen our nation.
“For those making the pledge today, it is the start of a new chapter filled with opportunity. For the rest of us, it is a privilege to welcome them as part of our Fraser Coast community.”
The Mayor was joined at the ceremony by Member for Wide Bay Mr Llew O’Brien MP, fellow Fraser Coast Regional Councillors, students from St Mary’s
College studying Civics and Citizenship, and St Mary’s College student Bomi Adebanjo, who performed the National Anthem.
The moving event highlighted the importance of community and the pride that comes with becoming an Australian. Families, friends and community members gathered to celebrate the occasion, applauding as each new citizen made their pledge.
Local representatives said the event not only recognised the personal journeys of those becoming citizens, but also the collective strength that diversity brings to the region. THE URRAWEEN Pump Station upgrades are now complete, delivering a more reliable water supply for Hervey Bay, reducing energy costs, and strengthening the resilience of Council infrastructure.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said just over $6 million has been pumped into the project, which includes a new pump station building, upgraded pipework, a new switch room, and improved chemical storage at the Urraween Reservoir.
“The new infrastructure will allow treated water from the Takura Reservoir to be pumped directly to the Ghost Hill reservoirs without needing to pass through Urraween Reservoir,” Cr Seymour said.
“This saves on power by using existing pressure in the water network and ensures water stored at Urraween is available during peak demand.
“The new building includes systems to improve water quality, updated power and pump speed controls, and flood protection for the switchboard, addressing issues experienced during the March rain event.
“A backup generator has also been installed to keep water
flowing during power outages.”
Cr Seymour said these upgrades are about delivering a more reliable, energy-efficient water network that’s built to handle future challenges.
“Council continues to invest in the planning and delivery of essential water and waste projects, and the Urraween Pump Station project has been a priority water infrastructure project that supports our growing region,” he said.
“Aging infrastructure is currently being replaced in Maryborough and Craignish, and Council has engaged a consultant to do design work for the Fraser Coast Water Grid.
“The proposed grid will
connect the Hervey Bay and Maryborough water supply schemes via a two-way pipeline and pumping stations, which will enable treated water to be transferred throughout the region.
“This will improve water security and reliability, maximise the use of our water sources and provide flexibility if one of the treatment plants is affected by plant failure, a natural disaster or planned maintenance.”
“A key priority in Council’s Corporate Plan is to effectively manage and maintain our assets to ensure we can provide the essential services our growing community needs and deserves.”
1. Bottle lids - jam machinery and become dangerous projectiles during processing.
Please remove lids before recycling.
If you collect milk bottle lids - drop them o at Nikenbah or Maryborough waste facilities for recycling.
2. So plastics - like bread bags and cling wrap tangle sorting machines and contaminate good recycling.

SUNSHINE Coast artist
Amanda Bennetts has won
$25,000 and the biennial Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize for her 11-minute video artwork Carve Crevice from Grace, announced at the exhibition’s official launch recently.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Arts spokesperson
Cr Michelle Govers said Ms Bennetts’ video is a striking exploration of labour, productivity and usefulness through the lens of living with disability.
Carve Crevice from Grace was originally commissioned by Accessible Arts and the Sydney Opera House. It will now join the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery collection alongside works by other leading Australian artists.
Cr Govers said this year’s prize attracted more than 250 entries nationwide, with the winner chosen by a respected judging panel including Waanyi artist Judy Watson, Michelle Newton, Head of Visual Arts, Creative Australia and Sarah Thomson, Director of Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.
Co-judge Michelle Newton described Ms Bennetts’ piece as a compelling performance that highlights the futility of labour under capitalism.
“With the artist herself as protagonist, the work is characterised by a ritualised, Sisyphean endeavour - breaking up sandstone in a task that resists logic or resolution,” she said.
“It becomes a poetic encounter, where the inexplicability of her actions adds a layer of unexpected humour and poignancy.”
Hervey Bay Regional Gallery Director Sarah Thomson said Girra provides an incredible opportunity for the Fraser Coast to showcase spectacular artworks from across the country that address our relationship with the environment.
“I hope visitors will enjoy seeing so many different perspectives and mediums represented in the finalists’ exhibition, spanning painting, glass, ceramics, photography,
video and even kinetic sculpture,” she said.
“Residents can now vote for their favourite artwork in the Hervey Bay Boat Club People’s Choice Award. The winning artist will receive $2,000, with votes accepted at the gallery until 16 November.”
The Strange Kinship exhibition was also launched alongside Girra, featuring Australian and international artists exploring human–animal connections through mythology, spirituality and encounters with non-human life.
Both exhibitions are open until 16 November 2025, with free entry.
The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and weekends, 10am to 2pm.

GETTING children active with intention is more vital than ever.
Whether through organised sports, kids’ gym classes, athletics, dance, gymnastics, or swimming, purposeful movement shapes their physical and emotional development.
When children engage in activities that challenge and excite them, they improve coordination, confidence, and learn teamwork, perseverance, and goal-setting.
Physical activity benefits children’s wellbeing in many ways: it boosts metabolism, helps maintain a healthy weight, and strengthens muscles and bones.
Beyond physical benefits, regular movement influences mood, sleep, and energy.
Active children tend to be happier and more resilient, better equipped to handle life’s stresses.
Sports and activities promote social skills and friendships, encouraging children to enjoy movement as
a lifelong source of joy.
Nutrition is just as important. Sadly, many parents find healthy eating tough amid busy schedules, often resorting to packaged foods, sugary drinks, and treats as quick rewards.
Rewarding good behaviour with sweets distorts children’s
relationship with food, linking “good” with sugar and treats. Instead, we should celebrate effort, activities, and positive choices with praise and nonfood rewards.
Foods with excessive sugar, artificial colours, and additives are addictive and can have serious effects on children’s bodies—impacting behaviour,
mood, teeth, and immune health. Teaching kids to enjoy wholesome, minimally processed foods fosters habits that support mental, emotional, and physical health.
While it can feel overwhelming, small changes make a huge difference. We are 100% in control of what our children eat—until they have their own money. The food and treats we introduce shape lifelong habits. The battle becomes harder when boundaries aren’t set early. The key is to lead by example. Show your children how to enjoy nutritious foods and stay active.
Creating a supportive home environment makes it easier to build healthy routines that last a lifetime. Starting early is the best way to set children on a path to lifelong health and happiness.
From Fishing Village to Coastal Powerhouse
Predicting the shape of a city decades into the future is part insight, part imagination. For Hervey Bay, a region already in the midst of transformation, the next 25 years promise both opportunity and challenge. Two local leaders, real estate principal Leah Quinn and planning consultant Ward Veitch, offer their perspectives on how the Bay might look by 2050.
A Market Under Pressure
Leah Quinn, Principal of Prime Agents, says the property market is already showing signs of what is to come.
“Hervey Bay has just experienced one of the most significant surges in property values in its history,” Leah notes.
“For many long-time locals,
this change is both exciting and confronting. What was once romanticised as a quaint fishing village has evolved into a modern coastal destination. By 2050, that transformation will be even more profound.”
She predicts that median house prices, currently around $700,000, will likely climb to between $1.3 and $1.5 million by mid-century.
“Prime coastal or acreage homes will be beyond the reach of most first-home buyers. These properties will shift from being stepping stones to intergenerational assets, passed down rather than traded.”
Land, Density, and the Shifting Shape of the City Town planner and Urban Planet Principal, Ward Veitch, agrees that land
and the driveway full of cars,” Ward explains.
“That form of development is spreading further and further from the coast as demand rises. With land supply limited and development timelines stretching two to three years, the shift will continue south and west.”
Ward believes redevelopment of older sites and higher density along the Esplanade should form part of the solution.
“I would like to see more focus on redevelopment and increases in density, but the ‘no change’ agenda is strong. Despite some gentrification, the Esplanade remains a tired and old built
Compact 400–500m blocks or community-titled lots will be the norm. Families wanting more space will need to look inland, perhaps creating what becomes known as the ‘Fraser Coast Hinterland’.”
The Economics of Growth
Both experts highlight the role of finance in shaping development.
“The world of ideology is dictated by finance and risk,” Ward stresses.
“Despite our e orts to encourage diversity, financiers demand minimisation of risk. That’s why, regardless of what planners or communities want, product outcomes are often uniform and cautious.”

Leah adds that escalating construction costs will compound the challenge.
“With rising material prices, higher wages for trades, and stricter environmental standards, building a new home could cost double or triple what it does today. Renovating existing homes will become more attractive for locals.”
Families, Communities, and Changing Ways of Living
“A ordability pressures may reshape household structures.
Intergenerational living will become more common,”
Leah says.
“Parents, children, and grandparents sharing homes makes economic sense, but it also reconnects families with the close-knit lifestyle locals value.”
Ward points out that the separation of demographic groups has already reshaped communities.
and disbenefits, but the age of mixed demographics has broken down. Community networks are more fragmented than they once were.”
Preserving the Bay’s Essence
Despite concerns about a ordability and sameness, both
Some Local leaders say the Bay’s future will be shaped by soaring land values and denser housing, but its foreshore and lifestyle must remain untouchable.
“The creation of retirement and lifestyle villages has removed large numbers of older generations from traditional suburbs. There are benefits
leaders are confident the Bay’s identity will endure.
“What I am confident of, is that the city will retain the things that brought my family here in 1971:
the beach, the accessibility, and the lifestyle. We are bigger, busier, and have more ‘things,’ but we are still Hervey Bay. I don’t see that changing,” Ward says.
Leah agrees that growth must be balanced with protection of the qualities that define the region.
“Our esplanade, our safety, our friendliness, these qualities cannot be priced. If we grow carefully, Hervey Bay can remain a haven of lifestyle even as prices rise.”
Looking Forward
By 2050, Hervey Bay will likely be a city where land is scarce, density is higher, and property is a keystone of family wealth. Yet its greatest assets, the coastline, the lifestyle, and the sense of community, may prove just as important as dollars and development approvals.
As Leah puts it, “What we own today may become tomorrow’s greatest gift to the next generation.”
Ward reminds us, “Despite any changes, Hervey Bay will still be Hervey Bay.”
