WHEN Hervey Bay athlete Ethan Parry steps onto the track, there is a spark that is impossible to miss.

The smile, the focus, the pure joy of competition, it’s all there.

This year, that energy took him to one of the biggest stages in sport, the 2025 Virtus World Athletics Championships in Brisbane, where he proudly represented Australia among more than 300 athletes from over 30 countries.

The Virtus Championships, a global event for athletes with intellectual impairments, are all about celebrating ability, dedication, and sporting excellence. Ethan embodied every part of that spirit.

Competing in the 100 metres, long jump, and shot put as part of the triathlon-style “Tri” event, along with individual events, he made his mark, finishing eighth in the world in the 100 metres and claiming silver in the long jump, as well as an Australian record in the 4x100 metre relay.

“It was a very fast race,” said Ethan’s mum, Gail.

“The Brazilian athlete smashed the world record again, but Ethan gave it everything. To be eighth in the world is incredible.”

His silver medal in the long jump came down to a nail-biting finish, just centimetres separating him from the gold.

“He thought he had done enough to win and was a little cranky at first,” Gail laughed.

“But that’s the beauty of competition, it’s all about being your best on the day, and he did just that.”

Behind every great athlete is a great team, and Ethan’s support network is second to none.

His coach, Greg Coombs, and dedicated trainer Ali Bennett from Allied Gym, have been instrumental in shaping his routine.

“Ethan trains every day,” Gail explained.

“Tuesdays and Thursdays are in the gym with Ali, who is just amazing. What she doesn’t know, she finds out. Then on other days, he is out training with his carer or working through the program.

It is a full schedule, but Ethan loves it.”

And that love shows. Whether sprinting down the track or soaring through the air in the long jump pit, Ethan competes with unshakable joy. “He loves being fit and strong,”

said Gail.

“The friendships, the energy, the competition, it gives him so much confidence. Watching him out there, it’s worth every minute.”

inclusiveness.

“At the event, everyone was just an athlete. It was seamless, no labels, no limits. The camaraderie was amazing. In that space there he is simply Ethan, one of the team.”

For Gail, one of the most moving parts of the Brisbane Championships was the

Virtus Global Games in Europe.”

Ethan’s journey began in 2019, when he first wore the green and gold at the Virtus Global Games as a 16-year-old St James Lutheran College student.

“The whole school stopped to watch his race,” Gail recalled.

“He won silver back then, and it just took off from there.”

Since then, Ethan has represented Australia four times, plus two regional team appearances, a remarkable achievement for any athlete.

Among the highlights of this year’s World Championships was a moment captured on camera, Ethan, arms raised, grinning ear to ear, celebrating with pure, unfiltered happiness.

“That clip says it all,” said Gail. “It shows what sport means to him. It’s joy, belonging, and pride all rolled into one.”

“There are a few competitions next year,” Gail said.

“We can’t attend them all, it’s self-funded, but we’re focusing on one major event in Thailand next November, the Virtus Asia–Oceania Championships. Ethan also has his eye on the 2027

Now back in Hervey Bay, Ethan is already back into his training routine, preparing for whatever challenges come next.

His determination is unwavering, his enthusiasm contagious.

When asked what he loves most about competing, Ethan doesn’t hesitate: “Seeing my mates. Racing the best in the world. I love it.” It’s that simple, and that powerful.

There’s one month left to nominate a local hero for the 2026 Fraser Coast Australia Day Awards.

Mayor George Seymour said the awards celebrate individuals and groups making

the region special through leadership, inspiration, and community spirit. Categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sport and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, and Community Group or Organisation of the Year.

“Nominating someone is a wonderful way to say thank

you to those who make a difference,” Cr Seymour said. Nominees will be recognised on January 19, with winners announced at the Brolga Theatre on Australia Day, January 26.

FRASER Coast Regional Council have extended weekend opening hours at the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres.

Mayor George Seymour said the change is possible thanks to the successful recruitment of additional qualified lifeguards and follows recent upgrades at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre.

“We’ve strengthened our lifeguard team, which means we can safely open longer on weekends,” Cr Seymour said.

“With the Hervey Bay lagoon pool now reopened - complete with an activity tower and interactive splash pad - these hours make it easier for families, clubs and visitors to plan time in the water and stay active.

“The new seasonal schedules provide equity of access across our facilities and better match how people actually use the pools. This approach maintains strong supervision and keeps services reliable all year.”

The extension of weekend hours comes at a great time for the community, with warmer weather encouraging more residents and visitors to make the most of local aquatic facilities.

The improved access is expected to benefit a wide

range of pool users, from families enjoying recreational swimming to sporting clubs, fitness enthusiasts and learnto-swim participants.

The Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre has recently undergone significant improvements, including maintenance works and upgrades to enhance the overall experience for swimmers.

The reopening of the lagoon area, along with the addition of fun and interactive features, has made it a favourite destination for locals and tourists alike.

Council’s focus on providing safe, accessible and highquality aquatic facilities is reflected in the decision to extend weekend hours.

The change supports the region’s growing population and aligns with Council’s broader commitment to community health, wellbeing and active lifestyles.

TEACHERS across Hervey Bay inspired, supported, and empowered children and young people as the community came together to celebrate World Teachers’ Day Queensland.

The occasion was an opportunity to officially thank local educators for their dedication and the positive impact they make every day.

Among those recognised was Belinda Skinner, a teacher at Carinity Education Glendyne.

The Hervey Bay special assistance school supports young people who have not found success in mainstream schooling or have faced barriers to education.

“I’m passionate about helping students rediscover their confidence and develop lifelong skills through creativity, compassion, and connection,” she said.

“Glendyne’s focus on tailored support and wellbeing aligns perfectly with my belief that every student deserves an education that meets them where they are and inspires them to grow.

highlights has been seeing students use technology and creative tools to express their understanding of literacy.

“One student who once avoided reading ended up producing a digital story with sound and imagery that blew everyone away,” Belinda said.

“It was a powerful reminder that when we differentiate and personalise learning, incredible things happen.

“Seeing that spark of pride and self-belief is the most rewarding part of teaching.”

Belinda was drawn to teaching at Glendyne because it provided “a safe and nurturing environment

IT’S TIME to light up the Fraser Coast and spread festive cheer with registrations now open for residents and businesses to join the annual Christmas Lights Trail.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the trail was one of the most loved community traditions of the year, bringing families, friends and neighbours together to celebrate the joy of Christmas.

“There’s something magical about Christmas lights as they bring people together, brighten our streets, and create wonderful memories for families,” Cr Seymour said.

“Last year, almost 170 homes and businesses registered, with residents and visitors alike taking evening drives to see the sparkling displays.

“This year, we are encouraging more businesses to light up and join the Christmas Lights Trail.

“It’s a simple, festive way for businesses to boost visibility, with decorations that continue to draw attention well beyond trading hours.

Cr Seymour said all registered homes and businesses will feature on Council’s interactive online Christmas Lights Trail map,

which will be available on Council’s website in early December.

“We had some amazing light displays in 2024 with nine streets nominated for the coveted Christmas Street title,” he said.

“Westminster Court in Kawungan was the winner of the best Christmas Street in 2024, with Ronaldo Way in Urangan winning the title in 2023.

Paul Mewett from Westminster Court in Kawungan said they were thrilled by how many people visited their street to enjoy the dazzling Christmas lights last year.

“It took us more than a month to set up over 50,000

lights, but it was all worth it seeing the smiles on people’s faces,” he said.

“Our street is planning to go even bigger and brighter this year as we try to take out the street title for the second year in a row.

“The winning street earns a ‘Christmas Street’ sign to display for 12 months.

“If three or more houses in one street team up, they’ll be in the running for the 2025 Christmas Street crown.”

Registrations for the Fraser Coast Christmas Lights Trail are open now and close at 5pm, Thursday 20 November.

FRASER Coast residents are invited to celebrate creativity, sustainability and style at the opening of this year’s Waste to Art exhibition at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough, where a dazzling Wearable Art fashion parade is set to steal the show.

Council Arts spokesperson Sara Diana Faraj said the much-loved competition continues to inspire artists of all ages to see waste in a new light - transforming discarded materials into meaningful works of art, from scrap-metal sculptures to wearable gowns made of recycled textiles.

“Fraser Coast Regional Council had 114 entries into the popular competition this year, including 23 entries into the new Wearable Art category,” Cr Faraj said.

“It’s really exciting to see so many residents embracing the new Wearable Art category and transforming waste into fashion.

“As part of the opening, wearable art will take centre stage with a live fashion parade, which will bring an exciting, dynamic element to the exhibition opening and awards presentation.

“From dresses made of recycled curtains to accessories crafted from everyday

materials, it’s inspiring to see how local artists are turning waste into works of wearable beauty.

“The opening event will also feature food vans, live music, and yard games in the courtyard, making it a fun and vibrant community celebration.

Council Resource Recovery spokesperson Michelle Byrne said the new category highlights one of the fastestgrowing global waste issues - textile waste.

“Each year, Australians send more than 200,000 tonnes of clothing to landfill,” Cr Byrne said.

“This new category shines a spotlight on textile waste and shows how fashion can be reimagined sustainably.

“Across all categories, artworks must be made primarily from items destined

for landfill or sourced from op shops, tip shops or secondhand stores. Judges will assess entries on creativity, durability and demonstration of reuse and repurposing.

Cr Faraj said a $5,000 prize pool in Buy Local Gift Cards is up for grabs, thanks to the generous support of Hyne Timber, Cleanaway, the Reuse and Recycle Group, and Nugrow.

“All artworks will be displayed at Gatakers Artspace from mid-November 2025 to 3 January 2026, with category winners announced at the opening and the People’s Choice Award to be announced at the close of the exhibition,” she said.

PLAY With Your Kids (PWYK) is proud to be running the Transitioning to School/Kindy Readiness Program throughout Term 4, 2025, with much-loved local teacher, Mrs Robyn.

A registered teacher with 40 years of experience, Mrs Robyn currently teaches primary school students and brings a deep understanding of how children grow, develop, and learn through the ages.

“We feel incredibly lucky to have Mrs Robyn, who has been volunteering her time with PWYK for many years,” says Sheenah Heinonen, Family, Children and Youth Service Manager at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre.

“Her generosity, passion, and gentle approach make her a treasured part of our team.”

competition, a sold-out talent quest and more than 40 events across the Fraser Coast helped make Seniors Month 2025 a celebration of creativity, connection and community spirit.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls De Waard said thousands of older residents took part in concerts, expos, competitions, morning teas and social gatherings.

“Seniors Month brings people together through friendship, fun and creativity - and this year’s events really showcased how valued our older residents are,” Ms De Waard said.

“The Over 50’s Lifestyle Expo attracted around 800 visitors and almost 80 exhibitors, while the Mayor’s Picnic at the Museum drew a crowd of about 300, entertained by the Believe It or Not Singing Group and even a performance from the Mayor and Councillors.

“The Seniors Photographic Competition returned with around 40 entries received across two categories reflecting this year’s theme, Enjoying Retirement on the Fraser Coast.” Winners were announced at

Ms De Waard said the muchloved Seniors Talent Quest once again drew a full house at the Hervey Bay RSL, with 21 local performers showcasing their talents in music, comedy, poetry and song.

“Jo-anna Cooper-Katts took out Best Overall Performance with her Golden Medley act, while other award winners included Alan Jarrett (Best Vocal), The Boys (Best

Musical), The Silver Charms (Best Group), and Neroli den Houting (Encouragement Award),” she said.

“We were fortunate to have Ms Billie Wilde - an international author, wellknown performer and former 1970s–80s star who now calls the Fraser Coast home, attend the event to perform and assist with judging.

“Congratulations to all the winners, everyone who joined in across the month, and thank you to the many volunteers, community groups and sponsors who helped make this year’s program possible.

“Seniors Month is a special time on the Fraser Coast. It helps people reconnect, share stories, and celebrate the wisdom and life experiences that enrich our community.”

FRASER Coast residents and drivers are being advised that night works have begun to fix and strengthen a section of Main Street in Urraween between Urraween Road and Richard Charles Drive.

Council Roads and Transport spokesperson Denis Chapman said the $2.64 million project would make the busy road safer and smoother for everyone who uses it.

“Main Street is one of Hervey Bay’s busiest roads and the surface has worn over time,” he said.

“These works will give it a new, stronger surface that will last for many years.

“Doing the work at night will provide a safer working environment, help finish the job faster, reduce traffic delays and save around $300,000 in costs.”

The project has received $1.28 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program, with the rest funded by Council.

Work started in early November and will take about four weeks to finish, weather depending.

The upgrade is part

of Council’s broader commitment to maintaining high-quality road networks across the Fraser Coast, improving safety and supporting local economic growth. Once completed, the renewed section of Main Street will enhance travel efficiency for residents, businesses, and visitors, particularly those accessing key facilities such as Stockland Hervey Bay and the hospital precinct.

Crews will work Sunday to Thursday nights from 6pm to 5am, and Main Street will reopen by 6am each day.

During construction hours, traffic will be reduced to one lane, with detours in place

Cr Chapman said Council would work closely with the contractor to keep disruptions to a minimum.

“Nearby residents and businesses might notice some noise or dust while work is underway,” he said.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while these important upgrades are completed.”

New line marking will also be completed at the end of the project, resulting in one northbound lane and two southbound lanes – giving motorists an extra travel lane when heading south.

THE LUXURY dress hire movement has been sweeping Australia as more women turn away from fast fashion in favour of sustainability, quality, and timeless style. Now, it’s the Fraser Coast’s turn with the launch of Moments Dress Collective, the region’s dedicated luxury dress hire — bringing high-end fashion to women both locally and across the country.

As formal season celebrations continue throughout the year across the Fraser Coast, Moments Dress Collective is helping women — and especially Year 12 students — look and feel their best for life’s biggest moments.

The collective offers designer and boutiquelabel gowns for hire from around $100 for a four-day rental — roughly a quarter of the retail price.

Founded by local creative Nicky Fernandes, Moments Dress Collective was born from a passion for sustainability and a desire to make luxury fashion accessible to everyone — from school formal attendees to wedding guests and gala-goers.

“Every woman deserves to feel incredible for her special moment — whether it’s a school formal, a wedding, or a milestone celebration,” said Nicky.

“But that doesn’t have to mean spending hundreds on a dress you’ll only wear once. Dress hire lets you enjoy high-quality, designer fashion for a fraction of the price, while making a more sustainable choice.”

The studio operates primarily online, with Australia-wide express postage, free local pick-up, and try-ons available by appointment at its private Hervey Bay studio. Each postage delivery includes a return prepaid satchel, making the process simple and stress-free.

With Hervey Bay’s schools hosting their Year

galas, and special occasions.

Designers include Lia Stublla, House of CB, Tania Olsen, Studio Lexi, Nookie, and Studio Minc, among others.

With around 80 dresses ranging from size 4 to size 16, the collection caters to a wide variety of styles. Every piece is cleaned and ready to wear, saving time, stress, and unnecessary waste.

“I’ve spoken with so many local students who order a dress online and it arrives nothing like the photo — or not at all,” Nicky said.

“Now they can try on in person or hire online locally, knowing they’ll get a beautiful affordable gown, delivered on time.”

The collection features an elegant, everchanging range of designer and boutique-label gowns, carefully curated for formals, weddings,

“There’s something truly special about wearing a high-quality dress,” Nicky added.

“It changes how you feel — the fabric moves differently, the fit flatters more naturally, and you carry yourself with confidence. That’s the experience I want every customer to have, especially young women heading to their first big event.”

Customers can browse and book online at

availability, and select express delivery or local collection. They can also book a try on appointment before committing to the hire.

In an exciting next step, Moments Dress Collective will soon offer consignment opportunities for locals to earn money from formal or evening gowns sitting unworn in their wardrobes — giving designer pieces a second life while supporting a more sustainable, circular fashion community on the Fraser Coast.

“It’s heartbreaking to see beautiful, expensive dresses worn once and forgotten,” Nicky said.

“Our consignment model gives those gowns a second life — helping their owners make a little money back while supporting other women in our region to look and feel amazing. It’s about sustainability, community, and connection.”

As the only luxury gown hire studio on the Fraser Coast, Moments Dress Collective brings the national trend of designer dress hire to a regional audience — combining style, sustainability, and convenience in one seamless experience.

“Every dress represents a story — a celebration, a milestone, a moment,” Nicky said.

“That’s why we call it Moments Dress Collective — because every woman deserves hers. Whether it’s a formal night, a wedding, or a red-carpet event, these are memories that last forever — and the right dress helps make them even more special.”

With its blend of affordable designer fashion, environmental care, and personal service, Moments Dress Collective is redefining the way Fraser Coast women — from graduates to grandmothers — celebrate life’s standout

ORANGE Sky, a not-forprofit organisation providing free laundry services and meaningful connections to people doing it tough, is extending its reach to the Fraser Coast, announcing the launch of a new service in Hervey Bay.

The initiative marks Orange Sky’s 54th service across Australia and is set to officially begin at 9am on Tuesday, 18 November.

The arrival of the new service comes at a critical time for the Hervey Bay community, which is grappling with growing housing stress and cost-ofliving pressures.

Orange Sky’s Chief Operating Officer, Shayne Herriott, said the organisation’s mission is to connect with communities and provide practical help to those who need it most.

“Connecting communities through essential services and a place for conversation is at the core of what we do. Right now, many Australians are facing increasing challenges, making it more important than ever for Orange Sky to grow our services and assist more people - especially as the cost of living rises and the

housing crisis deepens,” Mr Herriott said.

“Recent ABS and AIHW data highlights the growing demand for support in Hervey Bay. We’re thrilled to be working alongside local partners to bring an Orange Sky service to the area and provide much-needed support to those doing it tough.”

While Orange Sky is known for its distinctive orange mobile laundry and shower vans, the Hervey Bay service will operate under an innovative new model — the Orange Sky Indoor Laundromat.

Instead of being van-based, this model places washing machines and dryers inside a service partner organisation, ensuring accessibility and ongoing support in a central location.

From launch day, shifts will run every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 11am at the newly managed Laundry 4655, located at Shop 6/12 Main Street, Pialba.

The service will be completely free and available to anyone in the community who needs a safe, welcoming space to wash their clothes

and connect with volunteers.

Orange Sky is also calling on local residents to get involved and help make a difference.

Volunteers play an essential role in the organisation’s mission — not only assisting with laundry but also providing conversation and connection to those who may feel isolated.

Those interested in joining the volunteer team or learning more about the program can visit orangesky.org.au/ volunteer.

To celebrate the launch, the community is invited to a special event at 8:30am on Tuesday, 18 November, at Laundry 4655, Shop 6/12 Main Street, Pialba.

Mayor George Seymour and local councillors will say a few words, an orange launch ribbon will be cut, and new volunteers will be on hand to chat with attendees about the service and how locals can get involved.

It’s a great opportunity for the community to see the new service in action and support Orange Sky’s mission to help those doing it tough across Hervey Bay.

FOR MANY local business owners, purchasing the premises they operate from, be it an office, warehouse, or retail space, can be a smart move.

But doing so through a Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) offers a unique wealth-building opportunity that’s often overlooked.

An SMSF gives you control over your retirement investments, including the ability to buy commercial property.

One major advantage? You’re allowed to lease that property back to your own business.

This means your business pays rent to your SMSF, creating a win-win: your business gets a tax deduction, and your super fund receives income taxed at just 15% in the accumulation phase, typically lower than company or personal tax rates.

It gets even better. Once your SMSF enters the pension phase, rental income

and capital gains from the property can become entirely tax-free.

Your SMSF can purchase the property outright using available funds, or borrow through a limited recourse

borrowing arrangement.

Members can also pool their super balances to make the purchase more achievable.

However, strict rules apply when buying through a SMSF.

The property must satisfy the ‘sole purpose test.’ meaning it must be used solely to provide retirement benefits, not as a residence for fund members or related

parties.

The purchase must also be at arms-length, meaning the price is at market value, and the lease agreement reflects commercial terms such as market rent, paid consistently and on time.

While this strategy offers compelling tax and retirement benefits, it’s not without complexity or disadvantages.

As with any investment, it’s essential to seek advice from your accountant and solicitor to make sure this strategy suits your individual requirements and that you can meet the compliance requirements.

If you’re a business owner looking to take control of your future while growing your retirement savings, buying your premises through an SMSF could be a powerful strategy worth exploring.

THERE is something special about watching a group of students swap their school uniforms for fishing rods and smiles.

Thanks to a creative partnership between Hervey Bay State High School’s Youth Support Coordinator Miss Lou MacDonald, the Beach House Hotel Fishing Club, and Hot Reels Pro Charters, that’s exactly what happened on the last day of term 3.

It all began with Lou’s ‘Bragzilla Fishing Brag Board’, a passion project that has become a much-loved fixture at the school.

Students can submit photos of their weekend catches for a chance to be featured on the board and entered into a term prize draw.

But this isn’t just about fishing, it’s about connection.

“Fishing is something I have

always loved,” Lou explained.

“I found that chatting with students about their weekend catches was a great way to build relationships. The Bragzilla board just took that idea and gave it some structure.”

What started as a lighthearted way to engage students has grown into a community-backed initiative.

When Lou began sharing student catches on social media, Beach House Fishing Club President Jason Bould noticed.

“Jason called me one day and said ‘Get down to Tackle World, we have got some vouchers for you.’ From there, it just snowballed,” Lou said.

The Fishing Club’s support didn’t stop at vouchers.

When Lou floated the idea of taking a few students on a real fishing charter, the club jumped on board, fully

funding a day out on the water with Hot Reels Pro Charters.

“It was an amazing experience. Three of our students, two in Year 10 and one in Year 12, spent the day on the water, learning, laughing, and making memories they’ll never forget.”

To qualify, students had to submit their fishing photos and meet the school’s Code of Citizenship, which reflects Hervey Bay High’s core values.

“It’s about rewarding positive behaviour and giving kids something to look forward to,” Lou explains.

Now in its second year, the Bragzilla project has become more than just a board, it’s a bridge between education and community, proving that sometimes, the best lessons happen outside the classroom.

THE TEMPERATURE is rising, birds are singing earlier each morning, the dogs are wanting their breakfast earlier and our days are getting longer, giving us more daylight.

The media has been reminding us about preparing for storm season, a sign that summer is here or about to begin.

This period also brings the festive season, marked by celebrations, family gatherings, and a sense of community.

The Queensland sun can be both a benefit and a challenge during these warmer months.

As we grow older, it is easy to overlook just how much the temperature can increase. This can leave us more vulnerable to heatrelated illnesses, especially if we are not paying attention to the warning signs.

I have noticed that many of my patients, concerned about the cost of electricity, choose not to use their air conditioning, even on the hottest days.

While it is understandable to be careful with expenses, it is also important to prioritise health and safety.

Hydration deserves attention too. With busy schedules, many of us forget to drink enough water.

You may not always feel thirsty, but it is important to keep your fluid intake up to avoid dehydration, which can come on quickly, especially in warm weather.

As the holidays approach, many of us are drawn to the beaches along the Fraser Coast.

It is a good reminder to be sun-smart whenever we are

outdoors.

Do not forget the basics: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen (and reapply), slap on a hat, slide on sunglasses, and seek out shade when you can. These steps can help protect you from the effects of UV exposure and help make your summer enjoyable for all the right reasons.

This is the time when many reconnect with friends and family, share a meal, and enjoy a drink. However, moderation is important. If you are drinking alcohol, balance it out with plenty of non-alcoholic beverages, and always pay attention to how much you are consuming.

Food safety matters too, make sure your preparation areas are clean and leftovers are stored properly to avoid food poisoning.

A little care goes a long way in keeping your celebrations safe and enjoyable.

GET READY to laugh until your sides hurt! Fraser Coast audiences are in for a side-splitting theatrical experience this November as Z-PAC Theatre presents Tom, Dick, and Harry, a frantic farce by the celebrated duo Ray and Michael Cooney.

Running from 28 November to 7 December, the production promises an evening of non-stop laughter, quick-fire dialogue, and escalating chaos in the intimate surrounds of Hervey Bay’s beloved community theatre.

Directed by seasoned Z-PAC director Roger Jennings, the play follows the unfortunate Tom Kerwood, who is trying to adopt a baby with his wife. What should be a calm, respectable day turns into absolute bedlam when his two well-meaning

but disastrous brothers arrive to “help.”

Dick shows up with a van full of contraband, Harry turns up with a dead body, and Tom is left frantically juggling lies, cover-ups, and absurd coincidences as he tries to convince a stern adoption agent and an ever-suspicious police constable that everything is perfectly normal.

A major highlight of this production is the meticulously designed set, created by a team led by Roger.

With its multiple doors, hidden compartments, and clever sightlines, the set becomes a key player in the action—perfectly suited for the play’s trademark slapstick, sudden entrances, and lightning-fast timing. Every door slam and misplaced body adds another layer of hilarity

as the plot spirals further out of control.

Roger says audiences can expect pure escapism. “We all need a good laugh, and this play delivers exactly that,” he says.

“It’s classic British farce—fastpaced, witty, and brilliantly absurd. The script is a masterclass in comic timing, and our cast has embraced the madness with enthusiasm.

We can’t wait to share that energy and laughter with the Fraser Coast.” Tom, Dick, and Harry runs at Z-PAC Theatre from 28 November to 7 December, with performances on Friday and Saturday evenings and Saturday and Sunday matinees. THE FRASER Coast is home to a dynamic generation of young professionals who are redefining what it means to live, work, and lead in our region.

As President of the Fraser Coast Young Professionals (FCYP), I have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the energy, innovation, and ambition driving this new wave of local talent.

Our members come from all walks of life: small business owners, health professionals, educators, lawyers, tradespeople, and entrepreneurs, yet we share a common goal: to grow personally and professionally while contributing meaningfully to the place we call home.

For too long, young professionals in regional Queensland have felt they needed to move away to build successful careers.

But here on the Fraser Coast, we’re proving that you can achieve, lead, and make a difference without leaving. Our region offers immense potential for innovation and career development, and through networks like FCYP, we’re creating the support systems that make staying

local not just viable, but exciting.

Fraser Coast Young Professionals is more than just a networking group. It’s a community of driven individuals who support one another through mentorship, skill development, and shared opportunity.

We host events that connect emerging leaders with established business figures, facilitate partnerships between industries, and advocate for the professional growth of our region’s next generation. Young professionals bring fresh ideas, creativity, and adaptability, qualities that are crucial in navigating the challenges and opportunities facing our region. Whether it’s driving

small business innovation, engaging in civic leadership, or contributing to community projects, our members are actively shaping the Fraser Coast’s future today.

As we look ahead, our focus is on expanding engagement, strengthening regional collaboration, and connecting young professionals with mentors to help them on their journey within their professional lives.

I encourage all young professionals across the Fraser Coast to get involved, to connect, learn, and lead together.

When young people are empowered, our whole community benefits.

The Fraser Coast’s future is bright, and it’s being built right now by passionate, skilled, and forward-thinking professionals who believe in this region and its potential. Find us on Facebook and Instagram: @ frasercoastyoungprofessionals or visit our website: www.fcyp. com.au/.

A STANDOUT feature of Hervey Bay Hospital’s new Intensive Care Unit (ICU), set to open next year, will be a state-of-the-art ceiling pendant system designed to improve patient access, safety and wellbeing.

Unlike traditional medical equipment setups that occupy walls and floors, these units hang from the ceiling, freeing up valuable space in a patient bay while keeping essential equipment close at hand.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) Clinical Director for Fraser Coast Intensive Care Services

Dr Raju Pusapati said medical services such as oxygen and power supply were currently positioned along the back wall behind the head end of the patient bed.

“The frequent addition of life support equipment – with cables and tubing attached – creates a cluttered environment that limits our access to the patient,” Dr Pusapati said.

“The new ceiling-mounted swiveling pendant will bring all essential ICU equipment into one easily accessible location, including oxygen supply, suction devices, ventilators and monitoring tools, giving clinical staff

unrestricted access to the head end of the patient’s bed when performing sterile procedures in urgent situations.

“The integrated examination light further facilitates medical examination and procedures.”

Hervey Bay Hospital acting ICU Nurse Unit Manager

Daryl Taypin-Shaw said the pendants were designed with a horizontal layout to enhance provider-patient interactions.

“The ergonomic design of the pendant allows staff to reposition it with minimal physical effort, and its versatility supports the easy addition, removal or storage of essential equipment,” Ms Taypin-Shaw said.

excited to start using the pendants next year.

“The pendants will also integrate seamlessly with ceiling-mounted patient lifts in each bay, enabling earlier mobilisation and helping to prevent weakness and other complications,” Ms Barnes said.

The ICU ceiling pendants form part of the $94 million Hervey Bay Hospital Expansion under the Hospital Rescue Plan, including a new ICU, medical ward, and rooftop helipad due to open in the second half of 2026.

ICU Nurse Educator Janette Barnes said the team was

HERVEY Bay teenagers are being supported by a communitystrengthening program that aims to empower young people through one-to-one mentoring.

Funding from Carinity’s Collaborative Community Projects has enabled Hervey Bay Baptist Church to offer COACH youth mentoring at Carinity Education Glendyne.

Mentors spend one hour per week during school term with a student participant from the Nikenbah school, to help develop their strengths, build their confidence and set goals.

“Every student has their unique needs, circumstances and challenges. These can range from trauma, learning difficulties, social and emotional challenges, to family dynamic challenges, loneliness and isolation,” said Hervey Bay Baptist Church COACH Coordinator, Di Priest.

“The mentors bring their lived experience, faith, wisdom and training to walk alongside, listen, ask open-ended questions, and empower the young person to consider new ways of thinking, being and doing life.”

Gail Parry, Carinity Education Glendyne’s Attendance and Inclusion Support Worker, noted it is “refreshing to see that adults in our community are interested in

supporting our young people”.

“Sometimes our young people just need some reassurance, to build confidence in themselves and their own abilities,” Gail explained.

“Some students are simply in need of a safe adult in their lives, someone who can model positive behaviours, and help them brainstorm issues they might be facing at school or at home.

“One of our students asked for their mentor to assist in a mediation to express some friendship issues that they were having with their peers.

“Another mentor spends time with one of our senior students on a project building and repairing a human-powered vehicle to race in the future.”

Philip Hamilton, Carinity’s Mission Engagement Manager – Community Development and Youth, said the Collaborative Community Projects had funded eight COACH projects over the past four years.

“COACH youth mentoring is an example of how volunteers and the church can engage meaningfully in their local community to help support kids and families doing life tough,” Philip said.

“The church teams are demonstrating how this can be done effectively by building trust and relationships in their local schools, to ensure kids feel supported and equipped to navigate really difficult seasons in their lives”.

The New Escape, Tourism, Culture & the Experience Economy

HA vision for a region that leads, not follows

ervey Bay has all the ingredients to become one of Australia’s most compelling coastal destinations. However, to achieve this we must think ahead and act boldly.

Blessed by nature where the calm of the Great Sandy Strait meets the ancient majesty of K’gari, Hervey Bay has long been attractive to visitors, yet natural beauty alone will not build a thriving visitor economy.

To thrive, we must evolve to become a destination which o ers a range of immersive experiences that deepens connections and reflects our region’s character. The question is not whether tourism will grow, but how that growth can enhance both environment and identity.

For too long, the region has been seen as an a ordable, seasonal escape, a haven for grey nomads and budgetconscious families. While these types of visitors will continue to choose Hervey Bay as a holiday destination and we should of course continue to welcome them, we must diversify and grow new markets to prosper.

the spectrum.

While our competitive advantage lies in our natural and cultural assets: K’gari, the Great Sandy Strait and our family-friendly beaches, we need to expand on this in sustainable ways which

Hervey Bay’s north-facing beaches and calm waters make this not only possible, but iconic. A light rail running along the Esplanade could provide a sustainable, convenient and memorable travel option for visitors and locals alike.

act as hooks for new visitor markets.

The future belongs to destinations that o er a range of layered experiences and Hervey Bay must position itself as a place that o ers something to a wide range of visitors at all ends of

Imagine sections of the Esplanade transformed into pedestrian-only zones, vibrant with outdoor dining, markets, art, and performance. Think beach-level restaurants where diners enjoy local seafood and produce with their feet in the sand.

To attract visitors year-round, we must develop all-weather attractions such as museums, galleries, and immersive storytelling centres. A World Heritage Visitor Centre for K’gari should be our flagship attraction, o ering interactive education and Indigenous-led storytelling that connects people to the island’s ecological and cultural story. Basing this centre in Hervey Bay would ensure we remain the true gateway to K’gari.

A Maritime Discovery Centre could celebrate marine biodiversity and extend whale-watching experiences beyond the season.

The development of an integrated golf course/resort and housing development in close proximity to Hervey Bay would provide an opportunity to attract new markets of visitors and residents. Our greatest risk is growth without vision.

Governments must shift from rule-based approval to visionary destination development leadership, ensuring every development aligns with a long-

term strategy for making Hervey Bay a truly iconic destination.

Governments should identify developments which would fill gaps in the market then work together to fill them. To sit back and wait, risks ending up with a poorly planned destination which has been developed by what makes money for developers, rather than what creates a quality destination.

We must aim to be recognised not as a cheap coastal stop, but as a cultural and experiential capital of regional Australia.

Regional towns across Australia show what’s possible through community-led vision. Busselton in Western Australia, Port Douglas in Queensland, Richmond in Tasmania, Bangalow in New South Wales, and Lorne in Victoria demonstrate how to grow tourism while protecting character.

Globally, Hoi An in Vietnam, Naxos in Greece, Lucca in Italy and Chamonix in France have done the same, harnessing natural and heritage assets to build vibrant visitor economies without losing authenticity. Their lesson: tourism done right can transform local economies while enriching community life.

A thriving visitor economy depends on accessibility and by 2050 the Maryborough bypass will improve access to Hervey Bay

and ease tra c flows which is an essential element for attracting visitors from our biggest market, South- East Queensland.

Expanding air connectivity including multiple carriers on the Brisbane – Hervey Bay route and direct flights from other major centres in addition to Sydney and Melbourne is crucial.

Looking ahead, high-speed rail links to South-East Queensland and a light-rail network within Hervey Bay could transform mobility.

Our greatest risk is growth without vision.

The sale of the former Pialba–Urangan rail corridor was a missed opportunity, a reminder that we must plan decades ahead, not year by year.

Redeveloping Urangan Harbour could redefine Hervey Bay. Tripling its size would unlock new marinas, waterfront dining, premium accommodation, and cultural spaces. With sustainable private investment and modern governance, the precinct could become the region’s beating

heart, a vibrant place where locals and visitors gather to live, work, and play.

Tourism now extends beyond short stays, it’s about lifestyle. Well-planned residential precincts with resort-style amenities, golf courses, wellness centres, and green spaces can attract longstay visitors and new residents alike. Designed sustainably, these developments strengthen both the visitor economy and our quality of life.

Hervey Bay is already an extraordinary place to live with a great climate, natural beauty, and a strong sense of community. But prosperity won’t come from complacency. To secure a vibrant future, we must look beyond convenience and short-term gains toward a bold, shared vision.

We have land, water, and sunshine. Combined with courageous leadership and planning, these assets can drive a prosperous, sustainable future. By 2050, let us be known not just for what we have, but for what we’ve built, a place where innovation meets natural beauty, culture thrives and both locals and visitors have a variety of experiences to enjoy.

The future of Hervey Bay will not be written by chance; it will be shaped by bold ideas, brave planning, and decisive action.

THE QUEENSLAND

Government has launched a new 12-metre vessel to patrol waters from Double Island Point to Baffle Creek.

The $2.6 million vessel, built in Queensland, features cutting-edge technology, including solar panels and increased fuel efficiency.

Named by the Butchulla people, the Bunbee means ‘water vessel’ in traditional language, highlighting the cultural significance of the region.

The Government is celebrating a gamechanger in marine conservation with the launch of the Bunbee, which will help rangers monitor compliance, educate the public, and protect the incredible biodiversity of the Great Sandy Marine Park.

The vessel will support the vital work of Marine Park rangers from the Department of the Environment, Tourism and Innovation (DETSI).

Already in the water and on patrol, the Bunbee serves as a significant upgrade for the DETSI fleet, offering a faster, more efficient, and betterequipped resource to protect Queensland’s marine treasures and support the state’s thriving tourism industry.

The 12-metre vessel is made from durable glass-reinforced plastic and features advanced navigational technology, twin diesel engines, and solar panels for improved fuel efficiency.

Its design and capabilities make it well-suited to operate safely in the diverse and often challenging conditions of the Great Sandy Marine Park.

Member for Hervey Bay David Lee said the Bunbee is a shining example of the Government supporting Queensland businesses and protecting our priceless natural environment.

“The Bunbee showcases the impressive capabilities of Queensland businesses and the

exceptional skills of the workers they employ,” Mr Lee said.

“The Bunbee is not just a boat; it’s a symbol of Queensland’s commitment to marine conservation, local industry, and sustainable tourism.”

The Great Sandy Marine Park, which stretches from Baffle Creek to Double Island Point, is home to turtles, dugongs, and migrating whales.

The Bunbee will play a key role in ensuring these species are protected while also helping the public understand the importance of conserving one of Queensland’s most unique marine environments.

FOR YOUNG people in Hervey Bay, getting a driver’s licence can be life-changing. It’s more than just freedom — it’s a key to opportunity. With a licence, they can access employment, education, and training that are often difficult to reach without a car in our regional community.

Yet for some, particularly those without a vehicle or someone to supervise their driving hours, that goal can feel out of reach.

The PCYC Hervey Bay driver mentor program is helping to bridge that gap.

This free initiative supports local youth in completing the 100 hours of supervised driving required before sitting for their licence test.

Beyond teaching driving skills, the program fosters independence and confidence, while removing barriers that can hold young people back from fully participating in community life.

However, the program’s success relies on volunteers, and there is currently a long waiting list of Hervey Bay teens eager to get behind the wheel.

Volunteer driver mentors

provide their time, patience, and guidance to ensure learners gain the skills and experience they need to become safe, responsible drivers.

Mentors use PCYC vehicles (standard, not dualcontrolled) and can set their own weekday schedule.

Full training and support are provided, and all that’s required is an open driver’s licence held for at least 12 months and a valid Blue Card.

Many of Hervey Bay’s mentors, often retirees, say the experience is incredibly rewarding.

They enjoy connecting with local youth, sharing their skills and stories, and

seeing firsthand the positive impact they’re making on the community.

For them, it’s more than driving lessons — it’s a chance to invest in the future of Hervey Bay.

If you live in Hervey Bay and can spare a few hours, consider becoming a volunteer driver mentor.

You could help a young person gain independence, open doors to new opportunities, and contribute to a safer, more connected community — one journey at a time.

To get involved, visit: https://www.pcyc.org.au/ program/braking-the-cycle/ Or contact PCYC Hervey Bay today.

WHEN Hervey Bay English teacher Liam Porter first began writing to pass the time while settling his baby a decade ago, he never imagined it would one day lead to the release of his debut fantasy novel, Artful Young Rogues.

Ten years later, Liam, who teaches English at St James Lutheran College, has transformed those latenight story ideas into a sprawling 400-page adventure full of monsters, airships and rebellion.

The book, which took shape slowly between lesson planning, family life, and Army Reserve commitments, is both a passion project and a legacy for his family.

“It all started when our first daughter was born and didn’t sleep very well,” Liam recalls.

“I would be up at all hours walking around with her and I started playing ideas in my head. One of them stuck, about a young man being used as live bait behind sea monsters. Eventually I thought, you are an English teacher, you love reading, just start writing.”

Over the following years, Liam honed his craft.

He devoured tutorials, studied authors like John Marsden, and learned the discipline of rewriting, deleting more than 100,000 words along the way.

“It became my thing,” he says. “The more I learned about structure, pacing, character development, the more I realised how much there was to improve. I wanted to do it properly.”

Life didn’t make it easy.

Between work, raising three daughters and serving with the Australian Army Reserve’s 9th Royal Queensland Regiment, writing was often squeezed into the margins of family time.

Then a health scare forced him to think differently.

“I had that moment where I thought, what would my kids remember about me. I embraced a quote from Andy Warhol, that the idea isn’t to live forever, but to create something that will. That was the push I needed to finish it.”

The novel follows thirteen-yearold Flynt Cunningham, a boy who escapes life as bait aboard a monster-hunting ship, and Xanthe Bones, a mysterious girl with red eyes and a violent past.

Together they defy a brutal regime in a world where some monsters are

underdog stories when I was a kid. I have always loved that theme; ordinary people facing impossible odds.”

Liam credits much of his perseverance to the people closest to him, his wife, Renee, and his daughters.

The result is Artful Young Rogues, a sweeping, character-driven adventure described on the cover as ‘One boy used as bait. One girl with a secret past. Together, they’ll sink a Regime.’

made, not born.

It’s a story packed with courage, friendship, and the thrill of rebellion, one Liam calls “an underdog tale at heart.”

“My dad used to tell great

“They are the reason this book exists. There were plenty of times I wanted to stop. My wife kept me going, the girls were my inspiration, and they all gave me the time and belief to finish.”

Support also came from fellow teachers and friends who read early drafts.

“I’ve had some brutally honest feedback from colleagues, it’s what you need when the self-doubt kicks in.”

That honesty, and persistence, paid off.

Artful Young Rogues has been embraced by readers, especially teens and young adults who love fast-paced fantasy with heart.

“I tell my classes all the time, don’t waste your imagination. Stories are

what connect us. And if someone from Hervey Bay can publish a novel after ten years of trial and error, then anyone can.”

As for what’s next, Liam is already deep into a sequel, 160 pages and counting.

“I’ve got it mapped out for a trilogy and maybe a few short stories on the side. The world’s still growing in my head.”

For now, though, he’s just enjoying the moment.

“Honestly, I said to my wife Renee, if I sell five copies, I’ll be happy. Anything beyond that is a bonus.”

Artful Young Rogues is available now through Liam Porter’s official website.
