HERVEY Bay can proudly claim a new world champion. Local BMX rider Corey Frieswyk has just returned from the 2025 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he won the Masters Men World Title, securing the coveted W1 plate and a careerdefining moment.

For Corey, now 31, the victory is the result of almost three decades of dedication to his sport. His BMX journey began long ago when he was just three years old. His father first took him to a BMX track, training wheels still bolted to his bike, and jogged alongside as Corey found his balance and discovered the thrill of racing. By the age of five, he was already competing.

“I have been racing for twentyseven years now. From the very start, it is all I wanted to do. I was always chasing that dream of being an Olympian or a world champion,” Corey said.

As a junior, Corey quickly showed natural ability. At nine he was competing at a national level, and at just ten he claimed a third place at the Challenge World Championships.

the world. Alongside international experience, he collected state and national titles, proving himself as one of Australia’s strongest riders.

“It was tough being that close, but that’s sport. It gave me even more drive to keep pushing.”

Corey went on to claim Australian national elite championships and a continental elite title, achievements that kept him at the forefront of BMX in this country.

Over the following years he travelled widely, including to Paris, where he lined up against the best in

2016. Corey was one of six riders in contention for a place in the Rio Games, narrowly missing out to his best mate in a nail-biting qualification series.

where he found his ultimate triumph.

In 2024 he placed fourth in the world, but he knew he had more to give. This year, all the pieces came together.

The Copenhagen track demanded both speed and skill. With races lasting just 30 to 40 seconds, BMX is a pure power sport where explosive starts and perfect timing make the difference.

Against a field stacked with former Olympians and elite world finalists, Corey powered through the rounds and crossed the line as world champion.

“This is the biggest win of my career. It’s something I have chased my whole life.”

The Master’s title is far from an easy ride. Winning meant beating riders who had once “holeshotted” Olympic final, which is BMX talk for blasting out of the gate first and seizing the lead into the opening corner, the most powerful position in a race.

He also trained at the Gold Coast under the AIS program,

physiotherapists, and strength trainers who sharpened his competitive edge.

Yet it was the Masters category, open to experienced riders over 30,

The gate drops at random intervals after a set of beeps, requiring riders to react instantly. A strong start can win a race before the first corner.

“It’s simple in a way, just go faster than the guy next to you.”

“But it’s also about tactics. If you get your wheel in front, you can control the line and block other riders. You have to be powerful, but also smart.”

Balancing elite sport with everyday life is no small task. Corey trains most mornings at 5am before heading to work in his own business. Track sessions are often a family affair, with his kids watching on as he rides.

After achieving his lifelong dream, Corey says he will take a short break before looking ahead to 2026. The BMX World Championships will be held in Brisbane, offering him the chance to defend his title on home soil in front of family, friends, and the local community.

“It will be special coming in with the number one plate and being the rider everyone wants to beat. I would love to defend it here in Queensland.”

THE HERVEY Bay Aquatic Centre’s $9.6 million upgrades are almost complete, delivering exciting new features and modern facilities for families, clubs and casual swimmers across the Fraser Coast.

There will be a special Lagoon Launch and Open Day on Tuesday 23 September, which has already booked out, with hundreds of residents eager to be among the first to try the new facilities.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the overwhelming response reflected how much the centre means to the community.

“The Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre is one of our region’s most loved public spaces, and these upgrades make it even better for families, clubs and casual swimmers,” he said.

“The booked-out Open Day shows just how valued this centre is.”

facilities for years to come.

“In the Sunshine State, we know how popular the local pool is, and this aquatic centre has features that will keep kids and families entertained throughout our hot summer months now and into the future,” he said.

The redevelopment was delivered in two stages over 18 months, proudly supported by the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program with a $3.557 million contribution.

Member for Hervey Bay David Lee said the funding ensured communities like Hervey Bay’s would enjoy modern, attractive and safe

“This is another way that the Crisafulli Government is ensuring our regional communities continue to be the liveable, enjoyable places that Queenslanders expect.”

• New changerooms

• An improved enclosure for the 25-metre pool with enhanced lighting and flooring

• Plant room upgrades and new backwash and chlorine

• A new interactive splash pad in the toddler pool

• A new activity tower and wet play equipment in the lagoon pool

• New shade structures and floodlights for the 50-metre pool

• Landscaping works

Cr Seymour said these upgrades reflected Council’s commitment to activating key spaces and improving liveability.

“We’re proud to celebrate the revamped Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre and look forward to celebrating these upgrades with the community at the special Lagoon Launch and Open Day.”

A MAJOR upgrade is on the way for the Mary to Bay Rail Trail, with Fraser Coast Regional Council preparing to replace ageing infrastructure along a 2.3-kilometre stretch between Torquay Road and Urraween Road.

The $920,000 project, funded through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program, will modernise the trail’s lighting system to improve safety, visibility, and comfort for the many residents and visitors who use the shared pathway on a regular basis.

The current system is aged and beyond repair, with deteriorated fittings reducing reliability over recent years.

As part of the upgrade, new architectural light poles and energy-efficient LED luminaires will be installed in stages to ensure the trail remains bright, safe and accessible for walkers, runners, and cyclists, particularly during the early mornings and evenings when the pathway is heavily used.

The works have been divided into three sections:

supply and installation of new architectural light poles and LED luminaires.

supply and installation of new architectural light poles and LED luminaires.

–replacement of existing luminaires with new energyefficient LED technology. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of January 2026, weather permitting.

Council has confirmed the Rail Trail will remain open throughout the upgrade. Traffic and pedestrian management plans will be in place to ensure public safety, minimise

disruption, and allow people to continue enjoying the trail while the improvements are underway.

Once complete, the new lighting system will not only provide better visibility and reduce ongoing maintenance costs but also enhance the overall experience of those who regularly use the Rail Trail for exercise, leisure, or commuting.

The Mary to Bay Rail Trail is a popular community space, connecting key parts of Hervey Bay and attracting daily use from both locals and visitors. The lighting upgrade will ensure the trail continues to serve the region as a safe, enjoyable, reliable, and accessible recreational and transport corridor for many years to come.

FRASER Coast Regional Council is calling on the community to help shape how the Nikenbah and Dundowran areas could grow over the next 10 to 20 years.

Planning and Development spokesperson, Cr Denis Chapman, said the Fraser Coast’s population was growing rapidly, and now was the time to plan for the future communities’ services, housing and infrastructure.

“The Nikenbah and Dundowran growth area covers more than 1,300 hectares of land and could support more than 10,000 houses in the coming decades,” he said.

“We’re looking at where homes, parks, roads, schools, shops and services might go as these areas grow.

“Our goal is to make sure these new neighbourhoods are well connected, with a good mix of housing and easy access to the things people need to live, work and enjoy life.

“We also want to protect the things that matter, like waterways, open spaces and natural areas.”

Cr Chapman said the project would also explore ways to provide a range of housing options.

“Right now, 93 per cent of homes in the region are

detached houses. This project will look at how we can offer more variety, including smaller and more affordable homes that suit different needs and life stages,” he said.

Council is working with specialist planning consultants to carry out detailed investigations and lead community engagement activities across multiple project stages.

Cr Chapman said input from landowners, residents, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders would be vital in developing the longterm vision.

“We want to hear from the people who live here, work here and care about the future of these communities. Your ideas and feedback will help us plan

better together.”

Community members are invited to share their feedback through an online survey open until 12 September 2025, following an information session that was held in late August.

To learn more about the project and information sessions, and to fill in the survey, visit Council’s Engagement Hub website at frasercoast.engagementhub. com.au/luipi

Council received funding for this project through the Queensland Government’s Scheme Supply Fund, which provides financial assistance to local governments for key planning scheme improvements.

HERVEY Bay is gearing up for two powerful community events this September, inviting locals to walk for awareness, support, and hope. From confronting the impact of suicide to shining a light on dementia, the Hervey Bay community will come together for initiatives that matter deeply to families across the region.

Out of the Shadows Walk – Bringing Hope to Mental Health

On Wednesday, 10 September, Lifeline Hervey Bay will lead the Out of the Shadows Walk for World Suicide Prevention Day. This poignant event invites the community to walk 9 kilometres along the Fraser Coast to honour the nine Australians who tragically lose their lives to suicide every day.

More than a physical journey, the walk symbolises hope, awareness, and connection. Starting with a reflective sunrise stroll at Urangan Pier and a gathering at The Brolga Theatre, participants can share stories, support one another, and collectively break the stigma surrounding suicide.

FROM side projects to start ups, young people across Hervey Bay are being given the tools to transform their ideas into real income through a free business program now available on the Fraser Coast.

The How To Start A Side Hustle course is offered as part of the Fraser Coast Young Business Leaders Program, a local initiative funded by the Australian Government through the Social Shift Institute.

Designed for people aged 18 to 30, it provides free access to online learning modules that break down the essentials of launching a small venture.

Organisers say the program is aimed at beginners and first-time entrepreneurs who may not know where to start but have the drive to try.

Whether it’s selling handmade products, offering services, or testing an innovative idea, the course is structured to guide participants step by step through creating and growing a side hustle.

The modules cover everything from recognising personal strengths and brainstorming viable business concepts to creating a realistic plan, managing time effectively, and marketing to potential customers.

Importantly, the program also addresses the everyday challenge of balancing a side hustle alongside work, study, and personal commitments.

Hervey Bay locals won’t just be learning theory.

The program features insights from experienced entrepreneurs, case studies from real businesses, and practical strategies that can be applied immediately. It’s designed to be actionable, giving participants the tools to leave with not just ideas, but a pathway forward. The program encourages participants to think about long term sustainability, helping them understand how a small side hustle can gradually grow into a steady stream of income or develop

into a full scale business over time.

Another key element is the opportunity to connect with like minded young people in the Fraser Coast region. Building a side hustle can sometimes feel isolating, so creating a network of peers who share the same ambitions adds motivation and long term support.

Hervey Bay has always been a community of creativity and innovation, and leaders hope this program will unlock even more opportunities for young residents.

swooping season has begun across Hervey Bay, with cyclists and pedestrians urged to take extra care on popular paths and around schools over the next six to eight weeks.

The annual behaviour coincides with breeding season, typically from late August through October (sometimes into November).

Wildlife officers say swooping is a defensive act, mainly male birds protect a zone of roughly 50 to 100 metres around the nest while eggs are incubated and chicks fledge.

Only a small minority, about 10 per cent of males, target people, but those that do often return to the same locations each year.

Common hot spots include shared pathways, school routes, parklands and treelined streets where nests sit

close to regular foot or bike traffic.

Swoops usually come from behind, often with a warning clack of the beak or a brush of wings intended to push intruders away.

You can reduce the risk by detouring around known nesting sites where possible during the short peak period. If detours are not practical, safety tips include dismounting and walking bikes, wearing a brimmed hat and sunglasses, and carrying an open umbrella above shoulder height.

Cyclists often add flexible cable ties to helmets to change their silhouette. Facing the bird while backing away can also help, as magpies prefer to strike from behind.

Children in prams should be covered and dogs kept on a short lead.

Fraser Coast Regional

Council advises against feeding magpies at problem sites, approaching fledglings on the ground, or disturbing nests.

Aggressive birds that create a genuine safety hazard can be reported to Council so temporary signage or management can be considered.

A few myths worth busting including magpies can recognise individual faces and remember negative encounters from year to year, so calm behaviour matters.

It’s also untrue that magpies won’t swoop children, and it isn’t about ‘liking shiny things’, swooping is just a territorial defence.

Local walkers have already named ‘The General’ on the Point Vernon Esplanade pathway among this season’s early offenders.

We are pleased to welcome Dr Amy Fan to our Smile Dental team. Together with Dr Rachel McDowall, they are both committed to helping you with your dental needs with a gentle and caring approach.

CHILDREN’S mental health is one of the biggest concerns for families across the Fraser Coast.

Unfortunately, many parents in Hervey Bay and Maryborough already know how hard it can be to access counselling or psychology services.

Waiting lists are long, appointments are limited and costs can be a struggle. While this shortage is a challenge, it doesn’t mean families are without support.

In fact, our region has many community organisations that can play a powerful role in helping children build resilience, confidence, and connection.

Schools are often the first to notice when a child is struggling, as simple as a dip in grades, changes in behaviour, or withdrawing from friends.

Teachers do an incredible job, but they cannot meet every emotional need on their own. That is where families and the wider community step in.

Parents and carers do not always need a formal service to make a difference.

Having open, gentle conversations at home about feelings, friendships, and challenges helps children feel heard and supported.

Linking in with community groups adds another layer of belonging and safety.

Across the Fraser Coast, there are countless options, like sporting clubs, youth

programs, mentoring services, and after-school activities.

These spaces not only give children positive outlets but also surround them with supportive adults and peers who can strengthen their emotional wellbeing.

When these groups work in partnership with schools and families, children are far less likely to fall through the

cracks.

Yet at the very tip of the spear in driving real, lasting change are counselling and psychology services. Professional support provides the specialised tools and strategies that children and families need when challenges run deeper.

As a community, we must continue to push for greater access to these services, ensuring they remain central to our response.

But while we work toward that goal, we can lean on the strong networks already around us.

A united approach, where professional services, families, schools, and community organisations stand side by side, creates the strongest safety net possible.

When we work together, children hear the clearest message of all, you are not alone.

OUTSTANDING volunteers, cultural contributors, sporting mentors and community groups can now be put forward for the 2026 Fraser Coast Australia Day Awards, with nominations open from today.

The awards recognise individuals and groups making a positive impact in the Fraser Coast region – from passionate volunteers and inspiring young leaders to not-for-profit organisations that go above and beyond. These awards highlight the incredible contributions that often go unnoticed, giving the wider community a chance to celebrate the achievements of their peers and neighbours.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour encouraged residents to get involved and nominate a local legend.

“The Fraser Coast Australia Day Awards are all about recognising the everyday champions in our community - those who lead with compassion, inspire change, and make a real difference in the lives of others,” he said.

“In 2025, we received nominations across five categories, celebrating powerful values like reconciliation, leadership, creativity, inspiration and compassion.

THERE’S a certain magic that comes with the first rehearsal of a new stage production. The script is still crisp in hand, the set exists only in sketches and imagination, and yet the story already feels alive.

That’s exactly the atmosphere buzzing through Z-PAC Theatre in Hervey Bay as rehearsals begin for Misery (10–26 October), adapted from Stephen King’s chilling novel. Misery offers audiences an edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller dealing with obsession, fear, and survival.

The story, made famous by the novel and the 1990 film, follows novelist Paul Sheldon and his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes. What begins as an apparent act of kindness soon unravels into a terrifying struggle for control, where the line between devotion and danger blurs dramatically.

Rehearsing a piece like this is exhilarating. The cast and creative team are stepping into a world that is intense, intimate, and suspenseful.

Unlike large ensemble shows, Misery depends almost entirely on two powerhouse

NOMINATE

performances, played by Katie O’Neill and Kyle Davis along with a supporting role by Stuart Waters.

Every line, every pause, every flicker of emotion must land with precision to maintain the tension. The rehearsal space becomes both a laboratory and a battlefield as actors test choices, explore physicality,

and discover the psychological depth of their characters.

For the actors, it’s about unravelling the complexity of King’s creations. Annie Wilkes is one of literature’s most infamous villains, yet portraying her demands more than menace—she must be believable, even sympathetic at times, in order to keep audiences hooked. Paul Sheldon embodies resilience and wit under extreme

pressure, and finding that balance on stage is no small task.

For the crew, the challenge lies in capturing the claustrophobic intensity of a story set almost entirely in one isolated room. The set design, soundscape, and lighting will all work together to create the uneasy stillness and sudden shocks that make thrillers so effective.

As rehearsals begin, there’s an undeniable excitement. In a matter of weeks, scripts and sketches will transform into a gripping theatrical experience. Misery is a chance to showcase the raw power of live theatre, and remind audiences that sometimes the scariest place of all is not a haunted house, but the human mind.

At Z-PAC, we’re proud to share daring, different stories at our cozy venue. Come support community theatre, cheer on our local creatives, and prepare for a suspenseful night you won’t forget.

FRASER Coast families are being invited to help shape the future of Oleander Park in Kawungan, with an upgrade of the popular neighbourhood park now in the planning stage. This project will ensure the park continues to meet the needs of local residents, offering safe, enjoyable spaces for children and families alike.

Deputy Mayor Sara Faraj said a concept design is now available for community feedback, with exciting new features aimed at creating a more active, inclusive, and familyfriendly space.

“The proposed upgrade includes new playground equipment, a shaded sand play area, a concrete bike track, a multi-use half court, and improved embellishments,” Cr Faraj said.

“Oleander Park is a local recreation park, and this upgrade is all about creating a fun, inclusive

space that reflects the needs of the neighbourhood.

“We’re encouraging people who live nearby, especially parents and carers, to have their say on the design so we can deliver a park that truly suits the local community.

Cr Faraj said the upgrade supports the Fraser Coast Park Strategy 2041, which guides how Council delivers the right parks in the right places across the region.

“Oleander Park is a great example of how we’re investing in our neighbourhood parks to encourage kids to get active, be creative and connect with their community.”

• New picnic shelters, tables and seating

• More shade trees and landscaping

• A water bubbler and bike rack with fun road-style markings, weaving poles, a pretend fuel

• New bins

• A carpark catering for all abilities

• New pathways to shelters to improve accessibility

• A multi-use halfcourt with hopscotch and handball line marking

Cr Faraj said improved parks mean more opportunities for kids to stay active, parents to relax, and neighbours to connect in a safe and fun environment. These upgrades will also encourage more community gatherings, helping residents to build stronger connections while enjoying the natural surroundings.

The community was invited to provide feedback on the project, and submissions are now officially closed.

Now, Hervey Bay is the place he has chosen to call home.

Brendan grew up in Australia but spent much of his twenties chasing opportunities on the Gold Coast.

He worked in gyms, did some modelling, and earned a living in the nightclub scene.

His life took an unexpected turn at 31 when he accepted an invitation to join Australia’s ‘Thunder from Down Under’, the long running male revue show on the Las Vegas Strip.

“I never really considered myself a dancer,” Brendan laughs.

“But I was fit and up for the challenge. It was physically demanding, but it opened the door to a whole new world.”

That new world came with its share of setbacks.

The heavy schedule left him injured, and when his time with the show ended, he found himself looking for the next chapter.

What followed was classic Las Vegas. He built a showgirl company, designing feathered costumes and started managing dozens of performers who posed with tourists under the neon lights.

girlfriend gave him one of the first consumer drones to hit the market.

“That drone was my first camera. I flew it as much as I could. I got hooked, and one thing led to another, drones to videography,

“I couldn’t sew a button when I started, but I taught myself and before long had 25 or 30 girls working for me on the Strip.”

It was a Christmas gift that changed everything, when his then

videography to racing drones, then into photography.”

Soon, he was being hired for commercial shoots and luxury real estate, gradually refining his skills and building a reputation.

He hustled constantly, reaching out to helicopter companies, tourism operators, and business owners.

“I probably got ninety nine rejections for every yes, but it only takes one yes to open the next door.”

That persistence brought him into contact with some remarkable names.

“One day I got a call asking if I could shoot Mike Tyson the next day. Suddenly I’m at his house. His hands were the biggest I’ve ever seen.”

“Next thing I know, I’m working with aircraft and helicopter companies, flying above the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas Strip. All that came from just asking. Taking action is everything.”

After fourteen years abroad, Brendan has resettled in Hervey Bay, where his parents have lived for the past four years.

The decision was partly practical, he wanted a base in Australia, but it was also personal.

“Hervey Bay feels right. It reminds me of home, except without the surf. The lifestyle, the space, even the whales, it’s special.”

While he admits he misses the waves, he sees opportunity in the Bay’s growing community.

“In Vegas, social media was everything. Here, I see a lot of businesses still tied up in day to day operations, and their digital presence gets left behind. For a regional city, that’s a huge opportunity.”

Brendan says his career has been less about luck and more about persistence and confidence.

“I think the biggest lesson I can share with young people here is to not be afraid to put yourself out there. Send the message, knock on the door, start the conversation. You might hear no most of the time, but the one yes can change everything.”

“I have learned that passion counts, but so does action. You don’t need to know the whole path, just take the first step and keep moving forward. That’s how opportunities come.”

WHEN Craig Taylor first picked up a pickleball paddle in September last year, he never imagined it would take over his life, or take him and his daughter Ash around Queensland chasing medals.

“I went along with a mate to a Friday night social session, and I just loved it straight away,” Craig said.

“The next week he couldn’t make it, but I went anyway, and before I knew it, I was playing nearly every night of the week.”

What began as a casual Friday night outing soon grew into a daily passion. Craig discovered sessions at the Hervey Bay PCYC during the day, competitive fixtures mid-week, and tournaments across the state. Some days he was playing up to five hours, a level of dedication that quickly paid off.

“It’s really easy to learn but hard to master. Once you get into the strategy and shot selection, that’s when the game really hooks you in.”

Craig’s devotion to pickleball is about more than sport.

Early in 2024, he suffered a stroke, a frightening experience that left him off balance and necessitated a stay in hospital with rehabilitation. Though he made a full recovery, the episode changed the way he looked at life.

space to recover both physically and mentally. That’s when pickleball appeared as the perfect mix of social connection, light physical exertion, and mental challenge.

“She gave me a birthday card with a picture of us playing pickleball, and on the back she had put an old photo of me teaching her tennis 15 years ago. That really brought it full circle.”

“Getting out of the house and finding a new community through pickleball gave me a fresh outlook. It has been a huge part of moving forward.”

“I went back to work quite quickly, but I wasn’t myself. I was frustrated, getting angry at little things, and I knew that wasn’t good for me or the people around me.”

Taking time out gave him the

One of the greatest rewards has been sharing the game with his daughter, Ash. A former junior tennis player, she was instantly hooked when Craig introduced her.

The pair now compete together in mixed doubles, with some impressive results.

They have won silver medals at tournaments in Hervey Bay and

Bundaberg, and on the Gold Coast, and recently earned selection for the Queensland Masters team.

“Over twelve weeks we played a round robin at our local club. The top players went on to regionals, then to state trials at Redcliffe. From there they picked the top four men and top four women to represent Queensland at the nationals. I was lucky enough

pickleball is now booming worldwide. In Australia, Pickleball Australia Association membership has grown from just a few hundred players in 2018 to more than 25,000 registered participants in 2024. Clubs are springing up across the country, with traditional tennis centres increasingly converting under-used courts into pickleball venues.

head-to-head with much younger opponents.

“In mixed doubles I drop down to the 19+ category with Ash, who is only 21. It has been amazing to win medals together, that’s something pretty special as a father and daughter.”

Pickleball has also taken Craig well beyond Hervey Bay. He has played tournaments in Redcliffe, Noosa,

He will now line up against the best players from Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia at the Australian Masters Championships, before backing up for the Australian Pickleball Championships, where more than 1,100 players are expected.

Craig’s experience mirrors a much larger trend.

Once seen as a quirky mash-up of tennis, badminton and table tennis,

The appeal is simple with the sport being easy on the body, easy to pick up, and highly social.

As Craig puts it, “Anyone can turn up to a social session, hire a paddle, and within a few minutes be in a game. That’s how you get addicted.”

For those curious about giving it a try, Craig’s recommendation is straightforward.

“Just come along to a social session on Friday nights at six or Sunday afternoons are a great start. You will be welcomed in, shown how to play, and you will meet people straight away. It’s fun, it’s accessible, and it can change your outlook.”

For Craig and Ash Taylor, pickleball is more than a pastime. It’s a pathway back to health, a bridge between generations, and a chance to compete together on the state and national stage.

“Winning medals is great, but the real win is playing alongside my daughter and enjoying every moment of it.”

HERVEY Bay-born violinist and arts communicator Julia Hill is calling on the next generation of musicians and creatives to take their shot at the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO), with applications closing soon.

Julia’s story shows the opportunities AYO offers— not only for orchestral performers, but also for those pursuing careers in Media and Communication, Orchestral Management, Sound Production, and Arts Administration.

Recently, she toured Europe with the AYO International Tour, performing in venues including Vienna’s Musikverein and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.

Reflecting on her journey, she recalls one standout moment, “If I have to pick a specific moment, it would

have to be when we finished Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances in the Melbourne Recital Centre at NMC 2022. I still remember the adrenaline whizzing around the stage, my heart feeling like it was going at 500 kilometres per hour and the sound evaporating into the back of the hall before the cheers rung back at us. It’s not just my favourite memory from AYO; it’s my favourite memory of my life so far.”

Julia first auditioned in 2018 after encouragement from her teacher, Graeme Jennings. “I had never heard of AYO before, but it seemed like everyone at uni was applying for it, so I prepared my excerpts and went for it. Seven years later, and I’m still doing AYO!”

One of her most powerful experiences came during the AYO Momentum Ensemble

Tour in 2022, bringing music to fire-affected communities.

“I could see and feel how much light we had brought to the communities—the concerts gave them a chance to come together and reflect as one. Every concert received a standing ovation. It was so special to speak to the audience members afterwards—even though we had not known each other before the baton went down, we had shared a moment in time through music that we wouldn’t forget.”

Her advice: “Absolutely go for it. There is no harm in applying, and you’ll learn so much just from the audition process alone. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the AYO has changed my life… maybe it’ll change yours too.”

Applications close 25 August Visit ayo.com.au/join-ayo.

FRASER Coast community groups and not for profit organisations can now apply for Council funding to support local 2025 festive season events and 2026 Australia Day events.

Communities spokesman Cr Phil Truscott said applications were now open via Council’s grants webpage - www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/grantsand close on 15 September.

“These grants help local volunteers bring people together – whether it’s community Christmas carols, a New Year’s Eve gathering, or an Australia Day breakfast,” he said.

“Funding of $500 to $2,000 is available per event, with a focus on safe, inclusive activities that showcase local spirt and support our cities and towns.”

The program provides opportunities for community groups, service clubs, and other not-for-profit organisations to create events that celebrate the region’s unique character while encouraging connection and participation.

Council has emphasised that events should be welcoming, family-friendly, and open to all residents.

Community groups can

apply for:

• – total pool of $15,000 for community Christmas/New Year events delivered 15 November 2025 to 1 January 2026; $500 to $2,000 per event.

• – total pool of $4,000 for community-led events held on Monday 26 January 2026; $500 to $2,000 per event.

Cr Truscott said the program was designed to be practical and flexible.

“We know every community celebrates a little differently. These grants can help with things like event marketing, temporary infrastructure or road closure costs – simple support that makes a big difference on the day,” he said.

The funding is intended to support a broad mix of

events across the Fraser Coast, ranging from small neighbourhood gatherings to larger-scale celebrations.

Council hopes the grants will encourage groups who may not have hosted an event before to get involved, as well as assist established organisers to continue their traditions.

Events that highlight local culture, showcase community talent, and promote pride of place are particularly encouraged.

Council is also keen to see applications from smaller townships and rural communities, ensuring the benefits of the grants are shared across the region.

WE ALL carry burdens that subtly pull us away from the lives we truly want—lives filled with health, peace, and genuine joy.

We tell ourselves, “You only live once,” and part of us believes that means we should live hard, push boundaries, and chase fleeting happiness.

But life is often more complicated. At any moment, obstacles arise—challenges that make us question what’s truly best for us.

Our soul, mind, and body are interconnected. They crave not just instant happiness but a deeper sense of peace—quiet moments where we feel truly rested, emotionally and spiritually. It starts with sitting still. Not to fix everything immediately, but to acknowledge what isn’t serving us well.

Sometimes, it’s excess sugar, negative self-talk, unhealthy environments or relationships or simply the habit of avoiding discomfort through distraction.

We don’t need to jump into

extreme commitments like a 75-day hard challenge with pressure to perform and a high chance of failing.

Instead, we can set small, meaningful goals that invite change—a walk every day, a few minutes of meditation, or swapping processed snacks for nourishing foods.

These actions feed our soul and boost our resilience. Change doesn’t have to be enormous; it just needs to be real and sustainable.

Living healthily is about recognising what habits have become barriers—mindless scrolling, quick emotional

eating, neglecting rest—and gently modifying or letting them go.

For example, instead of saying, “I’ll never eat junk food again,” try swapping it out with healthier options you enjoy. When we’re tired, it’s tempting to ignore the signs or settle for quick comfort.

But if we pause, breathe, and acknowledge what our body and mind truly need—be it water, rest, or a moment of gratitude—we create space for better choices.

It’s not about perfection; it’s about awareness and gentle change. Sitting quietly, confronting what doesn’t serve us, helps us find clarity and strength. From that stillness, we can set goals aimed at nourishing our spirit—small, achievable steps that feed us rather than drain us.

Over time, those steps add up to a life rooted in peace, joy, and genuine wellbeing.
