FRASER Coast Regional Council is inviting the community to have their say on the long-term future of the Torquay foreshore.

Until 10 November, residents can provide feedback on three options for the site currently occupied by the Torquay Beachfront Tourist Park:

• Maintain and upgrade the existing caravan park

• Create a new open space

• Develop a larger park and playground with recreation areas and event facilities for the wider community

Council CEO Ken Diehm said now was the time for the community to help shape how the foreshore will be used and enjoyed for decades to come.

“This is an important site on the

Hervey Bay foreshore, and Council wants to ensure any future decision is guided by informed community

the possibilities and understand what the community values most.

“While Council recognises the

views,” Mr Diehm said.

“No decision has been made. This is a genuine opportunity to explore

strong community interest in this issue, including petitions and social media discussions, the feedback that

will form the core of the consultation report will come through the official survey and in-person community sessions.

“These formal channels are the most effective way to ensure

community views are captured fairly, consistently and in a way that can be properly analysed.”

Concept layout plans have been developed for the open space and recreational hub options and are available to view on Council’s Fraser Coast Engagement Hub website, along with detailed information on each of the three options and a link to the survey.

Community feedback gathered through this process will be compiled and presented to Council to help inform future decision-making.

Six community organisations will have a secure home for the next decade under new lease agreements approved by Council.

The leases cover a range of groups, including sporting, cultural, educational, housing and media organisations: St Mary’s College

(Maryborough), Regional Housing Limited (Urraween), Fraser Coast Community Radio (Pialba), Tinana Football Club, Maryborough Softball Association, and Fraser Coast Rugby Union (Urangan).

Communities spokesman Cr Phil Truscott said the renewals would give the organisations the security they need to plan and invest in their future.

“Council is committed to creating connected communities through our places, spaces and people,” he said.

“These groups all play an important role in community life… Formal leases also give these groups access to grants and other funding opportunities that require long-term tenure, which in turn helps them maintain and improve their facilities.”

FRASER Coast Regional Council will introduce simpler, clearer rules for dogs on Hervey Bay beaches.

Animal Management spokesperson Cr John Weiland said residents asked for simple rules that are easy to follow.

“Locals told us they want clear, fair rules,” he said. “We’re getting rid of confusing time limits, keeping a busy family swimming area dogfree, and opening up more space for off-leash fun in the right places.

“We’ll back this up with clearer signs at beach entrances and more visible ranger patrols.”

• Off-leash all day, every day in two extended areas

– Scarness: Tuan Tuan Creek to Scarness Jetty and Urangan: Margaret Street groyne to Dayman Park (Reef World). This replaces the old timed rules.

• An extended dog-free beach from Scarness Jetty to Robert Street.

• A new dog-free stretch from Reef World to the Urangan Marina, creating a simple landmark-to-landmark boundary.

• Seasonal protection for

migratory shorebirds on the beach south of the Urangan Marina (between Moolyyir Creek and Pulgul Creek) with no dogs allowed from 1 September to 31 March, and off-leash access all day from 1 April to 31 August.

Cr Weiland said the aim was to share our coastline safely and sensibly.

Cr Weiland said the changes reflect the community feedback gathered earlier this year.

“We heard from 2,190 people across surveys, polls and submissions. The message was clear: make the rules simpler, use landmark boundaries and step up enforcement,” he said.

“Many also asked us to keep a dog-free swimming area

at Scarness for safety and comfort.

“If you love walking your dog, you’ll have more offleash space all day at Scarness and Urangan, while families can enjoy an extended dogfree stretch of beach from Scarness Jetty to Robert Street.

“Current rules remain in place until the new ones start in early 2026. Council will provide updates via its website, social media, newsletters, local media and at beach access points before the changes begin.”

More information about current off-leash areas is available at https://www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/dogmap

FRASER Coast residents are being encouraged to clear out, cash in and join Australia’s biggest second-hand treasure hunt - the Garage Sale Trail.

Two huge weekends of bargains and pre-loved gems are coming to the Fraser Coast this November, giving locals the chance to make money, meet their neighbours and keep good stuff out of landfill.

It’s not just an opportunity to declutter your home; it’s a community event that brings people together, encourages sustainable living, and supports a culture of sharing and reusing valuable items that might otherwise go to waste.

Council Resource Recovery spokesperson Cr Michelle Byrne said the Fraser Coast ranked among the top five regions in the country last year, with more than 90 local sellers and groups hosting 169 sales and stalls.

This remarkable participation demonstrates how passionate Fraser Coast residents are about sustainability, recycling, and connecting with their neighbours in a meaningful way.

“Council is proud to

support the Garage Sale Trail campaign again this year, which highlights the circular economy and the benefits of reuse,” she said.

“Held over 8–9 and 15–16 November, the Garage Sale Trail will see more than 15,000 garage sales and markets pop up across the country, with Fraser Coast locals joining over 400,000 Australians taking part.

Cr Byrne said on average sellers make $500 - proof that selling second-hand is as good for the wallet as it is for the planet.

“In 2024, almost 300,000 Australians joined the Garage Sale Trail, helping to reuse more than 755,000 items and save 2,540 tonnes of carbon

emissions, 96 megalitres of water and 1,870 hectares of land,” she said.

“There will be something for everyone: fashion, furniture, cookware, kids’ stuff, tools and more. Whatever you fancy, you’ll find pre-loved gems that last longer and cost less.”

Participating in the event is easy, fun, and a great way to support sustainable practices while finding unique items you won’t see anywhere else.

Coast Regional Council has appointed Narelle D’Amico as its new Water and Waste Services Director, bringing more than 20 years of senior leadership and engineering experience in local government and the water industry.

Mayor George Seymour said Ms D’Amico’s appointment was an important step in Council’s executive leadership transition.

“Water and waste services are among the most critical services Council provides, supporting our health, lifestyle and environment,” Cr Seymour

“Narelle’s technical expertise and collaborative leadership style will help ensure these essential services continue to meet the needs of our growing community and stay resilient for the future.”

Ms D’Amico is an experienced environmental engineer and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

She has served on numerous industry boards and committees, including the Australian Water Association, Queensland Water Directorate and the Wide Bay Burnett Urban Water Alliance.

“I’m excited to return to the Wide Bay and soon call

the Fraser Coast home,” Ms D’Amico said.

“I have strong personal and professional connections with this region, and I’m looking forward to working with councillors, staff and the community to support sustainable growth and deliver long-term benefits for the Fraser Coast.”

Council’s Water and Waste Services team provides drinking water to more than 42,800 properties and sewerage services to more than 36,000 properties through a network of three dams, four weirs, four water treatment plants, 1,150 kilometres of water mains and 835 kilometres of sewerage mains.

The team also manages seven waste facilities, a brand-new Material Recovery Facility, and

oversees 56,000 weekly waste collections and 27,000 weekly recycling collections, handling more than 300,000 tonnes of materials at its waste facilities in 2024/25.

“Safe, reliable and sustainable water and waste services underpin our lifestyle and economy,” Cr Seymour said.

“We are confident Narelle will continue to build on this strong record of performance and innovation as we deliver the services and infrastructure our growing community needs now and into the future.”

Ms D’Amico will commence her new role in January 2026. Council is continuing recruitment for the Chief Executive Officer and two other Directors as part of its broader leadership renewal.

October 2025 marks a significant milestone for Fraser Coast Hospice—four years of providing highquality inpatient palliative care to terminally ill people in our community.

In that time, we have supported more than 760 individuals and their families through one of life’s most vulnerable journeys.

It has been our privilege to care for them, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the families who entrusted us during such deeply personal moments.

Death and dying are topics we often shy away from, yet they are universal

experiences.

At some point, each of us will face the end of life or support someone who is.

That’s why the presence of a hospice in our region is so vital.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers, we want to thank the many people, businesses, and community groups who have stood with us.

Your unwavering support has made our work possible—and impactful.

Hospices are precious community assets.

The fact that Hervey Bay and Maryborough have access to such a service is both rare and remarkable.

But we rely on continued community support to continue to provide our services.

fWe are proud to be making a meaningful difference.

And we are deeply grateful for our passionate supporters—from volunteers, staff and doctors, to donors and board members—who step up time and again.

At the end of life, what matters most is the opportunity to be surrounded by loved ones in a safe, comforting, peaceful space.

A hospice is a place to live before we die, to reflect, connect, and find peace.

Thank you, Fraser Coast, for walking alongside us on this journey.

We look forward to many more years of connecting with our community.

With sincere appreciation,

THIS October, the national dyslexia network Code REaD will celebrate a decade of its annual awareness campaign, Lighting it Red for Dyslexia.

More than 100 locations across Australia will be illuminated in red, with the majority of sites located in Queensland.

The campaign continues to shine a light on the challenges faced by people with dyslexia and the importance of early recognition and support, aiming to reach families, schools, and communities nationwide.

This year, Code REaD has appointed an inaugural youth ambassador, George Rowland, a year 8 student from Hervey Bay who received a dyslexia diagnosis when he was 8.

George has a simple message for kids who are struggling at school with a potentially undiagnosed specific learning disorder.

"I want kids to know that it gets better when you have teachers who understand you and what you need to succeed. I used to struggle to get C and D grades but when I get the adjustments I need and have teachers who understand me, I can get A and B grades in some subjects.”

“Kids also need to know that they are not alone and must not give up, there is help out there."

His role as youth ambassador will see him share his experiences at schools and community events during October, encouraging other young people to seek support early and reminding them that dyslexia does not define their potential.

A focus of this year’s campaign for Code REaD is to break open the myth that young children routinely require six months of specialist intervention before being assessed for dyslexia.

Awareness initiatives will include school presentations,

online resources, and local community events, all designed to educate teachers, parents, and students.

Marshall Roberts, Chairperson of Code REaD, said for too long, the official or unofficial policy is that kids can’t be diagnosed until grade 2, for example.

"That’s simply not good enough because it only compounds the ‘wait-tofail’ model and reduces the opportunity for remediation.”

By raising awareness and providing practical advice, Code REaD hopes to see earlier diagnosis and better outcomes for children with dyslexia across Australia.

FRASER Coast Regional Council has endorsed a community-led strategy that sets out the next steps to improve and connect the Mary to Bay Rail Trail in stages. Council also resolved to wind up the Mary to Bay Rail Trail Advisory Committee and instead set up a new Stakeholder Reference Group to review progress and help identify and prioritise works for Council’s consideration.

The change reflects the project moving from planning to on-ground delivery and provides a simpler, more flexible way to involve stakeholders.

Cr Zane O’Keefe said the new strategy will guide steady, practical progress towards a continuous route between Urangan and the Maryborough CBD.

• Opening the section between Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road and Piggford Lane, with a formal trailhead and parking at Piggford Lane.

• Establishing a connection from Quarry Road towards Aldershot and Saltwater Creek, including a suitable creek crossing.

• Delivering a southern diversion around the Colton

mining lease to keep the route continuous.

• Providing a safe interim link between Walker Street and the Maryborough CBD using the existing road network, while long-term use of the rail corridor is explored with Queensland Rail.

• Permanent bridge crossings at Stockyard Creek and Black Swamp Creek so the trail can remain open during wet weather.

• Consistent trailheads at key access points including Maryborough CBD, Walker Street, Churchill Mines Road, Walligan, Takura and Piggford Lane. Council will continue to work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Rail, community groups like the Fraser Coast

Bicycle Users Group, and landholders to deliver projects in stages and seek external funding. The community will be informed as works progress. Parts of the trail are already open and well used. The sealed urban section runs from Urangan Pier to Nikenbah, with a rural section from Piggford Lane through Takura towards Colton. Horse riding is available on the rural section, with access from the Churchill Mine Road trailhead.

The Mary to Bay Rail Trail follows the former rail line that once transported coal and agricultural products from the Wide Bay Burnett region to the Urangan Pier. When complete, the full trail will span about 48 kilometres.

TORBAY Lifestyles and Care has received confirmation of their successful application of $3.2 million in funding under the Australian Government’s Residential-based Aged Care Services and Staff Accommodation Grant Opportunity. This investment will support major capital improvements, ensuring the future sustainability of aged care services on the Fraser Coast.

Torbay was one of only five residential aged care facilities in Queensland to receive funding, and the only provider on the Fraser Coast. The program saw 367 applications lodged nationwide, seeking more than $2.4 billion for a pool of $300 million. Just 66 projects were funded across Australia, with Torbay’s successful outcome representing a significant win for the local community.

The funding will enable Torbay to modernise its infrastructure by revitalising a decommissioned unit, along with the renovation of another. Together the redeveloped unit will result in 18 renovated single ensuite rooms, designed as two small, intimate households. Each household will feature private entryways,

garden spaces, domestic-style kitchens, and communal living and dining areas, supported by a shared back-of-house service zone.

The new design will enhance resident care, boost operational efficiency, and meet the increasing demand for highacuity aged care services on the Fraser Coast by adding an additional eight beds to the existing home. Importantly, the redevelopment aligns with the National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines (NACDPG) by creating a more home-like environment for residents while responding to the region’s ageing population. Funding decisions for the grant were based on application merit as well as broader assessment, taking into account supply gaps, urgency of funding, financial and compliance indicators such as star ratings, and the

level of expected community benefit relative to the grant amount. Torbay’s selection attests to the organisation’s strong performance record and the critical need for additional residential beds in the Fraser Coast region.

Carrie Chappell, Chief Executive Officer of Torbay Lifestyles and Care, welcomed the announcement, saying: “This grant is a major milestone for Torbay and the wider Fraser Coast community. It recognises our commitment to delivering quality aged care and services. This redevelopment will enhance the quality of life for residents and ensure our home remains modern, efficient, and equipped to meet future needs.”

A MUCH-LOVED

Hervey Bay landmark has been formally recognised for its historical and cultural importance, with Fraser Coast Regional Council resolving to add the Scarness Band Rotunda to the Local Heritage Register.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the decision acknowledges the community’s enduring connection to the rotunda and its role in shaping the region’s identity.

“The Scarness Band Rotunda has stood at the heart of our foreshore for nearly a century and is now officially recognised as a place of local heritage significance,” he said.

“Built in 1926, it’s a rare surviving example of the prewar seaside tourism era - a time when Scarness came alive with concerts, community events and beachside recreation.

“This listing not only celebrates the structure’s past. It also ensures its significance continues to be recognised into the future.”

The heritage listing follows community consultation,

independent expert assessment, and recent Council-led renovations to repair timber rot, restore elements of the rotunda’s earlier form, and improve public safety and usability.

“The rotunda has been carefully repaired and repainted to reflect its original character, including the removal of later additions like slatted balustrades,” Cr Seymour said.

“The work has improved the condition of the structure while still allowing the community to enjoy and connect with this historic site.”

The rotunda has been relocated multiple times within the Scarness foreshore over its life, and its current location is

between the Scarness Caravan Park and Enzo’s café.

The listing applies to the structure itself, not the surrounding parkland, and future relocation within the Esplanade precinct remains possible if needed.

The rotunda’s heritage listing acknowledges its:

• importance in demonstrating the evolution of Hervey Bay’s tourism history;

• rarity as a surviving preWorld War II foreshore structure;

• distinctive architectural features; and

• long-standing ties to the local community, including local bands and fundraising committees.

LIVING on the Fraser Coast offers many advantages, but accessing certain specialist healthcare services through the public system can be challenging. Often, residents are required to travel to Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, or Bundaberg to attend appointments that are not available locally.

To ease the financial burden of these journeys, the Queensland Government provides support through the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS).

The PTSS is designed to help patients with travel and accommodation costs when they need to access medical care far from home.

While the scheme appears beneficial at first glance, recent media coverage has highlighted that the subsidy has not kept pace with the rising cost of living.

The PTSS offers a fixed amount per kilometre for travel and may contribute toward accommodation expenses if an overnight stay is required.

However, these payments frequently fall short of covering the full costs involved. When factoring in petrol, parking, meals, and potentially several nights in a motel, the subsidy often does

YOUR FITNESS YOUR FUTURE

not go far enough.

Additionally, taking time off work and the stress of a lengthy drive down the Bruce Highway can make the experience even more costly, turning what was meant to be a “free” trip into an expensive ordeal.

As a General Practitioner, I give the option for patients to consider consulting a private specialist closer to home.

While the upfront consultation fees may seem high, the overall expenses including travel, accommodation, lost income, and time can make this option more affordable in the long run.

For instance, rather than spending an entire day travelling, paying hundreds of dollars on fuel and lodging, and missing work,

patients can often attend a local specialist clinic and be finished within an hour. This approach eliminates the hassles of traffic, early starts, and the need to arrange overnight accommodation.

Private specialist appointments are usually available sooner, allowing patients to receive answers and begin treatment more quickly.

This can have a significant impact not just on health outcomes, but also on peace of mind.

In some cases, travelling to larger centres is unavoidable, especially if specific specialists or procedures are not available locally.

However, for many Fraser Coast residents, choosing a private specialist nearby can be a smarter, less stressful, and even more cost-effective solution. If you are unsure about the best option for your circumstances, it is worthwhile to discuss this with your GP and carefully consider all the costs involved.

Fraser Coast Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group chair George Seymour said the message was clear: weather doesn’t plan, but you can.

“Planning for extreme weather is important. Research shows people who prepare recover faster than those who rely only on outside help,” he said.

“Planning ahead gives families peace of mind and helps our whole community bounce back together. A few minutes today can save a lot of stress later.”

• Know your risk - learn what severe weather could affect where you live and what it could mean for your household.

• Make a plan - write a simple household emergency plan so everyone knows what to do and who to contact.

• Pack a kit - grab a few extra items next time you are at the supermarket to make an emergency kit.

• City Park, Pialba, Hervey Bay, Friday 17 October, 4pm – 9pm

• Brolga Theatre Riverstage, Maryborough, Friday 24 October, 4pm – 9pm “Get Ready Food n Groove is

always a fantastic night out. It’s about community – good food, great music and practical tips,” Cr Seymour said.

“Come along, see the emergency services vehicles and crews, and pick up some ideas on how to keep your family safe this storm season.”

THE INGENIA Lifestyle War Memorial in Hervey Bay was formally dedicated on September 6, marking the completion of a two-year community-driven project.

The dedication ceremony featured a Catafalque Party provided by cadets from the local naval cadet unit, TS Krait. Attendees were led through the solemn proceedings with bagpipe music by Keir Welsh, the Last Post by Noel Anderson, and the hymn and National Anthem sung by Carolyn Tulloch.

The idea for the memorial began in March 2023 when resident Jim Martin called a meeting to form a committee.

With the support of then community manager Linda Nichols, the group set out to create a lasting tribute.

The committee included Martin as Chairman, Mike Roberts as Secretary, Graham Hunt as Treasurer, Ken Burns and Paul Barker as Project Managers, and members Graham Henry and Graeme Wright.

Their vision was to transform an underused area near the main hall, entrance foyer, bowls green and pool into a reflective and commemorative space.

The result features five steel

cutouts representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, a nurse, and a dog, all facing two flagpoles and a commemorative plaque.

A water feature and special bench seating enhance the tranquil garden setting.

Volunteer landscape gardeners

Donna Romeril and Janine McLachlan designed plantings inspired by the Anzac Peninsula, creating a striking visual impact.

Despite setbacks, including flooding from Cyclone Alfred’s tail in March that delayed the dedication, progress continued. On April 2, 2025, the garden, flagpoles, statues and water feature were unveiled to residents ahead of the official ceremony.

The project received financial

and in-kind support from Ingenia Lifestyle, community fundraising and a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Saluting Their Service grant, guided by the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch.

Local businesses, donors, and council representatives contributed, while residents hosted successful fundraising events such as a High Tea, Elvis Tribute Show, and Jumble Sale.

A memorial seat, funded by the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch and Memorial Club, is still to come.

Resident Ron Andrews also built an honour board recognising Ingenia residents and families who served.

Following the dedication ceremony, dinner was held in the clubhouse.

THE HERVEY Bay Woodcrafts Club is set to kick off the festive season early this year, hosting its much-loved annual Christmas sale over the weekend of Saturday 22 November and Sunday 23 November, 2025.

The event promises a wide array of handcrafted items, plants, and unique gift options for the community to enjoy.

Each week, the club’s dedicated group of woodworking enthusiasts gather at their Torquay shed, honing their skills and sharing their passion for the craft.

The facility, which has grown significantly in recent years, provides members with access to an impressive range of woodworking equipment.

This includes scroll saws, bobbin sanders, and advanced woodturning machinery, all supported by a ducted extractor system to maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Club members often bring their own timber to create a variety of projects, while additional materials are supplied through donations.

These resources are transformed into one-of-a-kind wooden pieces, from practical household items to decorative creations.

Many of the completed items

are then generously donated back to the club to be offered at the annual Christmas sale, helping raise funds to support the ongoing activities of the group.

YARRILEE State School

has been named a finalist in the Queensland Mental Health Awards, recognised for its innovative, whole-school approach to student wellbeing.

The announcement comes as Australia enters Mental Health Awareness Month, highlighting the school’s commitment to nurturing not only academic growth but also social and emotional development for every student.

At the heart of Yarrilee’s approach is its Social Emotional Wellbeing (SEW) Team, which delivers a traumainformed model shaping the school’s culture.

Leadership, educators, guidance officers, and psychologists work together to ensure students receive timely support, creating a safe and empowering learning environment.

community.

Yarrilee features dedicated spaces such as a Quiet Room for sensory decompression and an Emotional Regulation Room for supported reengagement.

In classrooms, students participate in daily mindfulness, emotional check-ins, and brain breaks, complemented by programs like SEEK, SEAL, and Team

Practical supports such as Breakfast Club, made possible through partnerships with the Queensland Government, P&C, Helping Hands OSHC, and Hervey Bay RSL, provide students with nutrition, social interaction, and a positive start to the day.

Families are also engaged early, ensuring collaborative support around each child.

Up, which build empathy, self-awareness, and positive decision-making.

The school’s iCare values—caring for ourselves, others, learning, and the environment—underpin every initiative.

By addressing mental health and wellbeing, Yarrilee helps students reach their full potential while fostering a connected and positive school

Tiered interventions, including Playdough Emotions, LEGO Therapy, Veggie Vibe, and Cook Up, combine creativity with socialemotional skill development. Student-led PULSEvents promote wellbeing awareness and strengthen peer connections, while peer mentoring and leadership programs reinforce a culture of shared care.

One success story involved a disengaged student who, through daily SEW check-ins and structured support, developed the skills to re-engage in learning, complete assessments, and build positive relationships with peers and teachers. Being named a finalist confirms that Yarrilee’s proactive wellbeing programs are making a real difference. The school looks forward to continuing to develop initiatives that support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth, setting the foundation for resilient, connected, and empowered young people.

BEFORE investing in commercial property, or signing a commercial lease, it is important to understand the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Town Planning Scheme.

The planning scheme outlines town planning zones which categorises land and properties for specific uses to guide development within the region.

This is vital in ensuring our city grows sustainably whilst maintaining its unique character. Zoning laws define permitted uses, building heights, car parking and more.

For investors, town planning zones directly determine your property’s value, potential uses, and development capacity.

A property’s zone, be it Principal Centre, Local Centre, Mixed Use, or an Industry Zone prescribes what kind of business can legally operate there and the scale of potential expansion. Due diligence on the current and proposed zoning of a property is critical to accurately forecast rental

yield, market appeal, and long-term appreciation.

For tenants, the planning scheme impacts your daily operations and future growth. It is important you check with council that your business is permitted to operate in the building you have chosen to lease.

For example, a gym (indoor recreation) is not permitted to trade in an industrial zone, unless the building obtains or has obtained development approval which can be costly and time consuming.

However, a gym can operate in a Principal Centre zone in an existing building without needing approval.

A café needs a zone like Local Centre or Principal

Centre to ensure foot traffic and compatibility with surrounding uses. Conversely, a mechanic or warehouse needs an Industry Zone (Low, Medium or High Impact) to accommodate noise, hours of operation, and vehicle movements without local complaints or Council breaches.

Make sure you know the zoning of the property you are you buying or leasing and ensure it matches with your intended use.

Confirm that your proposed business use is Self Assessable or, if it requires a permit (Code or Impact Assessment), understand the likelihood of receiving an approval and the associated costs.

Further information can be found on the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s website or seek the advice of a town planning consultant or a commercial property expert.

The City of Conversations: Hervey Bay 2050

Iwas born in Mount Isa, but since 1988 I have called Hervey Bay home. Apart from a short stay in Brisbane for university in the early 2000s, this city has been the backdrop for almost my entire life. I have celebrated milestones such as the installation of our frst traffc lights and watched rooftops multiply across onceopen horizons. Hervey Bay has changed dramatically in my time here, but a deeper question lingers: are we growing in the right direction?

What kind of neighbourhoods will we create for our children and grandchildren?

For the past twenty years, I have worked in the social sector across the Wide Bay Burnett. Growth has brought new infrastructure and opportunities, but I have also seen troubling signs, homelessness, isolation and loneliness rising alongside our population. The danger is that we build houses but forget to build communities.

Hervey Bay has long carried the label of a retiree town, the place of the “nearly dead and the newlywed.” That identity has come at a cost. Too often, our young people, especially those aged 22 to 35, leave in search of education, jobs, culture and connection they cannot find here. This loss of an entire demographic weakens the vibrancy of our economy, our cultural life, and our intergenerational balance.

Lessons From Elsewhere

Business’. The shift attracted commerce but also left some residents feeling excluded.

In Iceland, I witnessed how every town has a hot spring, a natural meeting place where communities gather to talk, share stories and debate local issues. In Nepal, the ‘Garden of Dreams’ showed me the power of something

simple: a shaded bench, a patch of nature, and the permission to pause together.

The lesson is clear. Growth and branding matter, but if they serve only one group, they leave gaps. Thriving communities depend not only on buildings but on the spaces where conversations happen.

trust, safety and connection. Loneliness and crime decline, while belonging and civic pride rise. Hervey Bay will soon experience this dynamic with the creation of City Park, positioned beside our education precinct, cultural centre, art gallery, library and neighbourhood centre. It has the potential to become a true civic heart. The question is not whether it will shape us, it will, but rather how we choose to activate it together.

Beyond one central square, we also need smaller neighbourhood spaces, what I call Neighbourhood Lounges.

These could include long tables for shared meals, amphitheatres where music can be played without a permit, sketching corners, or circles of chairs for dreaming and dialogue. These are not grand, expensive projects. They are simple, intentional design choices that send a powerful message: you are welcome here.

When people know their neighbours and feel safe to gather, trust rises. Visibility increases. Crime often falls. Public spaces, done well, are not a risk but a resilience strategy. They relieve pressure on health services, policing and welfare by strengthening the fabric of daily life.

Technology and Belonging

In my travels, I paid close attention to how other cities define themselves. Toronto once called itself the ‘City of Parks,’, emphasising green spaces and civic pride, but later rebranded as ‘Open for

The Power of Public Spaces

Urban researchers often speak about the ‘town square e ect.’ A well-designed civic space builds

By 2050, artificial intelligence and robotics will be deeply embedded in everyday life. Already, Japan is trialling robot pets in agedcare homes to ease isolation. AI-driven counselling chatbots are increasingly common worldwide. Prototypes exist of care robots that check on elderly residents, deliver medication, or provide a friendly voice when no one else is around.

These innovations may o er relief, but they raise profound questions. Is companionship the same when it comes from a machine? Can technology ever replace humanto-human connection?

I believe the answer must be no. Robots may listen, but only people can truly see and value one another. Technology can support us, but it cannot substitute for us. Which is why, paradoxically, public gathering spaces will matter even more in an AI-driven future.

History shows that civic participation often rises during collective crises. At present, Australia is experiencing its lowest volunteer rates in decades, as time pressures and economic stress weigh heavily on families.

Yet automation may free us from some of those pressures.

Imagine a Hervey Bay where routine tasks are handled by technology, and people choose to spend their freed-up time mentoring young people, coaching sports, or joining neighbours in conversation. Technology may give us time, but only citizenship will give us meaning.

What Happiness Really Looks Like Every year, the World Happiness Report ranks Finland, Denmark and Iceland among the happiest nations. Their secret is not simply

wealth. It is trust, fairness and connection. In Finland, social trust is so high that people assume a lost wallet will be returned. In Denmark, inequality is kept low through strong social investment. In Iceland, natural gathering spaces, green parks and hot springs, invite people to meet and talk.

These nations remind us that true wellbeing comes from more than

The

City

of

Conversations

is our chance to prove that the future of progress is the future of connection

economic growth. It comes from neighbourhood trust, strong social support, and well-designed public places.

If Hervey Bay is to thrive in 2050, we must measure our success not only in houses built or tourists attracted, but in connections created.

A New Vision for Hervey Bay I believe Hervey Bay has the opportunity to embrace a bold new identity: The City of Conversations.

A place where connection is our greatest infrastructure. Where the wisdom of older residents meets the energy of the young. Where technology supports our lives but does not define them. Where our future is built through dialogue, belonging and shared experience.

If we only chase growth, we risk becoming a city of loneliness, where people move quickly and life is something you purchase.

But if we design for conversation and civic participation, we can create a community where both growth and connection flourish.

One of my favourite sayings is: ‘The wise man plants the tree today knowing he will not sit under its shade.’ The choices we make now in Hervey Bay will not only shape our lives, but the lives of generations to come. We can allow ourselves to be remembered as a place of transience, or we can choose to be known as a place where people come to connect, share and dream together. The future is not only about infrastructure or algorithms. It is about relationships. And relationships begin with conversations.

experts from Aspect Autism Friendly have welcomed new government guidance allowing Autistic travellers to wear noise-cancelling headphones during airport security screening, a move they say marks a good step forward in making air travel more inclusive.

The policy update, now live on the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs website, means travellers who rely on noise-cancelling headphones as a disability support tool can now request to wear them through body scanners, with secondary screening of the device if required.

Dr Tom Tutton, Head of

Aspect Autism Friendly, said the change recognises the barriers Autistic people face at airports and will help reduce stress and sensory overload at a critical point in the travel journey.

“This is a small procedural change, but it has a huge impact on the travel experience for Autistic people. We are working with our Airport partners to ensure this messaging gets to all security staff,” said Dr Tutton.

For many Autistic travellers, headphones are a critical support tool to navigate the loud, unpredictable airport environment.

Until now, removing them during screening was a common source of distress

and even travel avoidance.

“I used to panic every time they made me take my headphones off at security,” said Emma Beardsley, an Autistic traveller. “The noise and the unpredictability can be overwhelming. Now I feel like I can travel more confidently and safely. It’s a big relief.”

Aspect Autism Friendly has worked closely with airports around Australia to improve accessibility for Autistic people and those with hidden disabilities.

The team continues to provide customised training for airport staff, autism friendly audits that support airports to build predictability before travelling (with visual stories and sensory maps) and a range of airport-based supports and accommodations.

“We know it will take time for every staff member in every airport to be fully aware of the new guidance, which is why we encourage travellers to self-advocate calmly and prepare ahead,” Dr Tutton said. “We’re committed to continuing our work alongside airports to ensure these changes are implemented consistently and with care.”

THE CRACK of the bat and the cheer of the crowd have returned as the 2025/2026 softball season kicks off across the Fraser Coast.

This year marks a combined competition between the Maryborough and Hervey Bay softball associations, promising a stronger, more vibrant league than ever before.

Registrations are now open for all divisions: Men, Women, U17, U13, and T-Ball.

The season officially started from Saturday 11 October 2025 and goes through to Saturday 14 March 2026, giving players and fans months of exciting matchups and plenty of community spirit.

With local clubs including the Terrors, Misfits, and Waves, the competition will bring together athletes of all levels, from

seasoned players to those just starting.

One of the most exciting developments this season is the introduction of the Home Run Heroes program. Designed especially for beginner juniors, the program provides a fun, welcoming entry point into the sport.

Young players can learn the skills of the game in a supportive environment, building confidence while making new friends.

For families looking to get their children active, it’s the perfect first step into team sport.

Games in Hervey Bay are played at Raward Road, behind the Aquatic Centre, a central and accessible venue for players and spectators alike.

The field is more than

just a place to play – it is a community hub where friendships are formed and families gather week after week. Softball is about more than just the game. It’s about teamwork, connection, and the joy of staying active.

With Maryborough and Hervey Bay combining competitions, this season is shaping up to be one of the strongest yet.

For enquiries, updates, and registration details, visit the Hervey Bay Softball Facebook page. https://www.facebook. com/MisfitsHerveyBay Whether you’re looking to play, coach, volunteer, or simply cheer from the sidelines, now is the time to get involved. Be part of the action. Be part of the community. Play softball.
