THE PENDING outcome of the Torquay Caravan Park has become one of Hervey Bay’s most divisive and passionately debated issues. At the heart of the debate lies a massive petition effort, among the largest in the region’s history, aimed at preserving the beloved park.
Meanwhile, various stakeholders continue to press competing visions, either advocating for a change in direction or defending the status quo. The community watches closely, awaiting a decision that will shape Hervey Bay’s identity and future.
The Advertiser had the privilege of speaking with Simon Kuestenmacher, one of Australia’s foremost demographers, renowned for his sharp, data-driven insights and strategic vision for communities.
A two-time guest of the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association (FCPIA), Simon has assessed Hervey Bay’s growth trajectory with a pragmatic lens.
When it comes to the region’s future, he doesn’t just look at the numbers—he deciphers what they truly mean.
Simon offered his perspective on the potential closure of the Torquay Caravan Park.
“To retain young people in the region and attract young families, the primary focus must be on affordable housing and sustainable career opportunities.
“Equally important is ensuring access to high-quality education, healthcare, and essential services.”
“While amenities such as playgrounds and a lagoon pool enhance visitor appeal,
they are not the key drivers for long-term resident retention or a primary factor in younger demographics choosing to settle in a location.”
“They are more likely to be a tourism element than a retention element.”
Nicki Hutley, a highly experienced
economist, with broad-based expertise in both macroeconomics and microeconomic policy, appears to also be at odds with the notion that young people bring prosperity.
“The spending of people aged between twenty-five and thirty-four fell across 2024 compared to a year earlier, while the spending of people aged between thirty-five and sixty rose.”
“What that means is that, on average, once you take into account the growth in prices, everyone below the age of 60 was spending less, and in some cases, much less,” said Nicki.
“Even with inflation, those aged 60 and above, particularly 75 and older, are spending
more than the rate at which prices have increased.”
Simon Kuestenmacher went on to emphasise that such developments like the push to redevelop Torquay Caravan Park often carry a political agenda, an unavoidable reality in urban planning.
Meanwhile, Hervey Bay’s booming tourism industry requires consistent investment
in cafes, restaurants, and supporting infrastructure.
“Caravan parks are very much a key part of that equation, as are a mix of other forms of short-term accommodation,” Simon said.
He urged decision-makers to take a broader, more strategic view.
“Think of it like a computer game called ‘Build Hervey Bay.’ The goal is to assemble all the right elements to create the most attractive living experience.”
Simon also commended efforts to establish a thriving City Centre in Pialba, calling it a major step in the right direction, however he cautioned against short-sighted decisionmaking, in the rush to handle change.
“You could make a case for removing one caravan park, but with so much available foreshore land, are we just solving one problem by creating another?”
“Saying ‘the land is too good to be a caravan park’ is the wrong way to look at it. There is an abundance of foreshore land in both the peak tourist and resident areas to provide options.”
His parting message was clear.
“Hervey Bay’s focus should be on encouraging visitors—young or old—to stay longer. The longer they stay, the stronger the city grows.”
Simon is a globally recognised expert in data visualisation and demographic trends. Named one of the world’s Top 50 influencers in data science, he is a columnist for The Australian and reaches over 30 million people each month via social media.
Thank you for the work you have done so far, it takes courage and strength to speak loud and proud! To speak about your views, perspectives and beliefs based on your research and findings.
I’ve read all your opinions and find them insightful!
Thank you for your work and dedication.
Much gratitude
I first met you back in The Independent newspaper days when I was promoting AFL and did a sponsorship deal.
I always found you to be highly professional, ethical and having a moral compass.
Your enthusiasm for your community was something that stood out. I thank you for your support and wish you well moving forward. You deserve more me time.
Can we please have more letters to the editor each week published as that is usually an opportunity for locals to be kept abreast with things happening in our town.
I think I understand why you’ll not be writing your opinion piece in the future and while I’ve not always had the same opinion as you; I’ve enjoyed the provocation to think things through and try to see both or several sides of
your piece. I will miss it.
It is sad news. But without a good news service via television and written media, how do we get balanced reliable information and the option to give community feedback? The community is a wide audience with a wide range of opinions which are voiced openly. Unfortunately, the quality and honesty of the reporting influences the quality of the responses and opinions.
I think your articles are always on point and well written.
You’re a true and honest Community man, who is brave and knows this town inside and out.
The Community will miss your column. No doubt you’ll keep inspiring others!
I, for one, didn’t always agree with your opinions BUT I did respect the honesty.
Publishing articles in the guise of news or analysis when they are in fact merely opinions is all too common in Qld “news media”.
Congratulations on your innings. I will miss the feature in the Advertiser. All the best.
Your columns will be missed. I really hope someone with
similar values will take up their pen and continue your good work. Thank you, and happy retirement.
Mum and I have really enjoyed reading your pieces Malcolm. Thank you for all your hard work and investigative journalism.
Thank you for your work over the time. I for one enjoyed the piece that had a balanced view and made me think of my view.
Sad to see you go as all your articles have always been “spot on!”
So, you’re a journalist... a writer of stories strange but true... getting to the facts is just part of your act ‘cos you’re a journalist, that’s you!!! (Part of a poem I write for my journo wife many years ago!)
I suppose it is fair to say that without an editorial, there is no genuine newspaper. Agree or disagree, an editorial piece is a necessity for me to bother opening up the publication. Now, I acknowledge that, that is an old fashioned view and probably it is also true that the internet has wrecked smaller newspapers that were once the backbone of a community. Your pieces will be missed.

Medical Place, Urraween, 4655 Qld Ph: 07 4128 0736
HERVEY Bay Hospital has reached a key milestone in its expansion, officially opening a new modular medical ward and welcoming its first patient.
Long-time Fraser Coast resident Cheryl Allsopp was the first to be transferred into the 24-bed general medical ward following treatment for a heart condition.
“When the nurses told me I was going to be the first patient in the new ward, I felt great,” Ms Allsopp said.
“When they brought me in, I even pressed the call button— just to be the first person to use it!”
Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said the ward’s opening significantly boosts
capacity and patient care.
“These 24 extra beds mean we can move patients from the Emergency Department into a dedicated ward more quickly, improving flow and ensuring a better overall experience,” Ms Carroll said.
Hervey Bay MP David Lee said the region’s ageing population and high rates of chronic disease made the expansion essential.
“Hervey Bay has the highest rates of chronic disease in the Fraser Coast, including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and mental health conditions,” Mr Lee said.
“Our median age is 51, compared to 38 statewide, and 31 per cent of our population
is aged 65 and over.
“It is critical we have the infrastructure and staff to meet existing and future needs.”
The modular ward was constructed offsite and delivered in 17 pre-fabricated units, now connected to the main hospital via an enclosed walkway. It is staffed by more than 60 new full-time employees.
The expansion is part of a larger infrastructure program, including redevelopment of the Emergency Department Building Level 2, a new ICU, and rooftop helipad.
“This is about more than just beds,” Ms Carroll said. “It’s about providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”

AS MORE essential services move online, many older Australians are finding it difficult to keep up with the rapidly evolving digital world.
To address this growing challenge, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) has launched a new initiative aimed at helping seniors build confidence and skills with technology.
The initiative sees the introduction of a dedicated Digital Support Navigator role within the Seniors Legal and Support Service (SLASS), with Anita Taylor stepping into the position.
Anita will work directly with seniors to provide one-on-one assistance with smartphones, tablets, and computers.
From accessing emails and using social media to navigating online banking
and vital government services like Medicare, the support is designed to make digital technology less daunting and more accessible.
SLASS solicitor Mary Boittier said the new role is a direct response to community need.
“We have heard from countless clients – most of whom are elderly and vulnerable – that technology use is a major obstacle to accessing the support they need,” Mary said.
With more than 15 years of experience in digital training, Anita is well prepared for the role. She has previously delivered software and website training through HBNC’s Bay Connect program and continues to provide digital literacy support through the Community Access Program (CAP).
“Anita’s expertise and support will make a real difference in the lives of many older people who just need a little guidance,” Mary said. The new service reflects HBNC’s broader commitment to supporting older members of the Fraser Coast community, ensuring they are not left behind as services and communication shift online.
About SLASS SLASS provides free and confidential legal advice, counselling, and advocacy for Fraser Coast residents aged 60 and over—or 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients—experiencing or at risk of elder abuse, mistreatment, or financial exploitation.

FRASER Coast Regional Council is turning up the volume and making a splash for Men’s Health Week (June 9–15, 2025) with Rock the Pool – Mental Health in Motion, a week of high-energy aqua aerobics sessions created especially for men.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the rock-themed workouts, held at both the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres, aim to get men moving, smiling, and staying active in a fun, low-impact environment that welcomes all fitness levels.
“During Men’s Health Week, the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres will host free 45-minute sessions in our heated pools, bringing together the therapeutic power of water, music and movement,” he said.
“These sessions aren’t about
fancy footwork or fitness levels—they’re about having a laugh, connecting with others, and doing something positive for your mind and body.
“There’s no judgement, just good tunes, easy moves, and a bunch of men showing up and giving it a go.”
Session schedule:
June 10, 11, 12 & 13 (Tuesday to Friday), 9am –9:45am
June 9 & 11 (Monday & Wednesday), 9am – 9:45am
Cr Seymour said the initiative is ideal for men of all ages and backgrounds—whether they’re new to exercise or already active.
“Whether you're a retiree, shift worker or busy dad, the sessions are designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone,” he said.
“Council is proud to support innovative and inclusive events that encourage healthy lifestyles and break down stigma around mental health.
“Exercise is proven to boost mood and reduce stress—and doing it in the water with a cracking playlist makes it even better.
“No bookings are required. Just bring your togs, a towel, and your best air guitar moves.”
With a focus on fun, connection and wellbeing, Rock the Pool encourages men to prioritise their mental and physical health in a supportive and relaxed setting.

OLDER Hervey Bay residents are being urged to take advantage of energy concessions and rebates, with a special community session set to be held at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre on Friday, 30 May at 10.00am. Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland, in partnership with the Association of Residents of Queensland Retirement Villages (ARQRV), is delivering a statewide initiative called Energy4Seniors.
The program aims to help older Queenslanders manage rising energy costs by providing practical tips and information.
“An estimated 20% of Queenslanders who are eligible for concessions are not accessing them, and we want to ensure Queensland Seniors are aware of the concessions and rebates they are entitled

to,” said Darren Young, Chief Executive of COTA Queensland.
“We know that many older people are experiencing cost of living pressures and energy-related expenses make up a significant proportion of regular household expenditure,” he added.
As part of the Energy4Seniors outreach, COTA Queensland’s Senior Project Officer, Lisa Hodgkinson, will be visiting Hervey Bay to speak directly with seniors and provide guidance on how to reduce energy costs without sacrificing comfort or health.
“Through our Energy4Seniors project, we’re providing older Queenslanders with the knowledge and information to become more energy efficient in their homes,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
“There’s lots of changes in the energy space, and they can be hard to keep track of. We’re making things easier with information sessions in your community.”
“This program is all about helping you to make wise energy choices without compromising on comforts or risking your health,” she added.
COTA Queensland is the state’s peak body for older people and works to ensure the voices of ageing Queenslanders are heard at all levels of government.
The Hervey Bay session is part of a broader tour that includes a stop in Gladstone earlier in the week.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said if you’re a fan of Australian outback crime then don’t miss the chance to come along to this author talk to celebrate the release of Angie’s debut book –Melaleuca.
“This is a gripping Australian crime story where a murder in the present leads to long-buried injustice,” he said.

“The Author Talk will take place at the Hervey Bay Library on Wednesday, June 11, from 3pm to 4:30pm, where Angie will share the stories and inspirations behind the book that’s captivated readers across the country.”

MARYBOROUGH has opened Queensland’s first dedicated Subacute Older Persons Mental Health Unit, providing older community members with a therapeutic, recovery-focused environment close to home.
The unit is part of the $39.61 million Fraser Coast Mental Health Service project and represents a major achievement for the Fraser Coast region.
It involved transforming the existing inpatient unit at Maryborough Hospital into a fully refurbished 10-bed Subacute Older Persons Mental Health Unit.
Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said the new unit expands bed capacity and reflects a shift in local mental health care.
“The Subacute Older Persons Mental Health Unit is a reflection of our commitment
to ensuring every member of our community receives the right care, at the right time, in the right place,” she said.
“This specialist service will provide a therapeutic environment tailored to the unique needs of older people living with mental illness, enabling recovery and wellbeing close to home, family and support networks.”
Executive Director for Mental Health Robyn Bradley said the service is open to consumers over 65 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers over 50.
“Each stage of the project was informed by the voices of lived-experience workers, carers, consumers and families, who provided valuable input from planning through to completion,” she said.
“This collaborative approach has ensured that both units are more than just modern
facilities – they are welcoming, inclusive spaces built around the needs of those they serve.”
“The unit will be supported by a multidisciplinary team, including “mental health nurses, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, and medical staff –all working together to deliver high-quality, person-centred care.”
Stage One of the project launched the Fraser Coast Mental Health Inpatient Unit last year, which has cared for hundreds of consumers.
Together, both stages increase inpatient capacity across the Fraser Coast from 14 beds at Maryborough to 22 acute beds in Hervey Bay and 10 new subacute beds in Maryborough, supporting a more localised, coordinated approach to mental health care.

A NUMBER of Fraser Coast tourism businesses have been officially recognised among the best in the state as part of the 2025 Best of Queensland Experiences (BOQE) program, with a diverse range of local operators named in this year’s list.
The recognition, awarded annually by Tourism and Events Queensland, identifies top-performing tourism businesses based on a stringent set of criteria, including customer reviews, online booking functionality, engagement with tourism platforms, and overall visitor experience.
This year, 2,341 Queensland tourism products received the prestigious stamp of approval, with 534 achieving a perfect score of 100 out of 100 points.
Fraser Coast operators featured across a wide range of categories including accommodation, food and drink, attractions, tours, hire, and transport.
as a region that continues to deliver high-quality, visitorfocused tourism experiences.
The accolade also serves as a powerful promotional tool, as BOQE recognition gives businesses a competitive edge in marketing themselves to both domestic and international travellers.
The announcement comes at a crucial time, as Queensland ramps up its preparations to elevate its tourism profile on the global stage in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Tourism Minister Andrew Powell emphasised the rigour of the BOQE program and the prestige attached to its recognition.
“The bar is high, and this is done deliberately to show travellers from all over the world that Queensland really does offer a world-class holiday,” Minister Powell said.
State to life for more than 28 million visitors each year, and they all do a brilliant job for Queensland. This nation-leading program shows travellers just how many of our operators offer a truly superior product.”

Queensland CEO Craig Davidson highlighted the importance of digital accessibility in today’s tourism market, noting a dramatic increase in online booking capabilities.
“This significant uptake in tourism capability shows the importance of the program in setting best practice criteria for businesses to strive towards,” Mr Davidson said.

ON THE FRASER Coast, the temperature has dropped, we have pulled out the UGG boots, our jumpers and enjoying a warm cup of Milo. Fire pits have become a popular feature in backyards and often a focal point for gatherings over the recent years. There are health benefits and risks to be aware of, however we can strike a balance.
The primary health concern with fire pits is air pollution. Burning wood does produce smoke and pollutants and this can aggravate asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. Even healthy individuals may experience coughing, throat irritation, and eye discomfort after prolonged exposure. Poor air circulation, particularly in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces, can worsen these effects. Additionally, improperly
burned materials like treated wood or garbage can release toxic chemicals that pose serious long-term health risks. Similarly, be aware that smoke can travel to neighbouring properties and can affect others.
Physical safety is another concern. Fire pits can cause burns if touched or if embers escape. They remain hot long after the fire is out, making them dangerous to children and pets.
Fire pits can also support well-being in several ways. One of the most significant benefits is their positive effect on mental health. Gathering around a fire can reduce stress, encourage social interaction, and improve mood. The flicker of firelight and the warmth it provides can have a calming effect, like meditation or nature therapy.
To enjoy the benefits while minimising the risks, use only clean, dry wood or smokeless fire pit designs, and ensure adequate ventilation. Keep a safe distance from the fire and never leave it unattended. When used responsibly, fire pits can offer not just warmth, but also a boost to mental well-being and social connection.
RESPECT, a leading notfor-profit aged care provider, is expanding into Queensland for the first time by taking ownership of BlueCare’s aged care home and co-located retirement village in Hervey Bay.
This transition marks an important step for Respect as it establishes itself as a specialist regional provider, committed to delivering high-quality, person-centred care to older Australians in Hervey Bay and other regional communities.
The transfer includes BlueCare’s aged care homes and retirement villages in Emerald, Gracemere, Hervey Bay, Ingham, Maleny, Mareeba, and Toogoolawah.
A carefully managed transition plan will ensure residents in Hervey Bay continue to receive consistent care, while local staff retain their employment during the changeover.
Jason Binder, CEO and Managing Director of Respect, said his organisation was eager to build on BlueCare’s strong local legacy in each community to strengthen aged care services in regional Queensland.

people living in rural and regional Australia and ensuring high-level services continue to be sustainable and available for families in need,” Mr Binder said.
He added, “We believe our structure, expertise, and commitment to person-centred care will ensure a strong future for each of these services.
We’re excited to welcome residents, families, and staff into our national organisation, which is backed by a strong reputation for compassion and a significant track record in delivering quality service and support, while also investing back into local communities.”
BlueCare’s Group Executive Aged Care and Community Services, Cathy Thomas, said Respect was chosen following careful consideration due to
the strong values alignment and their commitment to building upon the legacies of these homes in their communities.
“Following careful and thoughtful deliberations, we have chosen Respect to take on ownership of these homes, given the strong values alignment and their commitment to building upon the legacies of these homes in their communities,” Ms Thomas said.
A dedicated transition team will be based in Queensland to support residents, families, and employees throughout the process, which is expected to be completed in the coming months, subject to regulatory approvals.

A UNIQUE local attraction combining model railways, engineering, and community connection continues to delight visitors of all ages in Hervey Bay.

YEARS
THE REMARKABLE life of Australian strongman and wrestler Otto Acron is well documented online, so I felt ready when we met, just after his ninetieth birthday. He was born Alexander James Alsop in Sydney on May 12, 1935, to Lily Elizabeth and James Gess Alsop and had two brothers. Otto would one day become known worldwide by his stage name.
As a boy, Otto devoured Superman and Captain Marvel comics and was inspired by legendary strongmen like Tromp Van Diggelen and Australian Don Athaldo. Early on, he dreamed of following in their footsteps and would one day perform many of Athaldo’s famous feats, earning his own place in strength history.
At twelve, Otto told his dad he wanted to be a wrestler after attending a match with him at Sydney’s Leichhardt Stadium. By twenty-one,
he was wrestling there himself. “If you want something badly enough, you’ll find a way,” he says.
At fourteen, his dream nearly ended after a friendly boxing match left him with a broken nose and a bruised brain. “I wasn’t a boxer; I was a wrestler,” said Otto, “It took years to recover, but I was determined.”
He began strongman feats by bending nails and having rocks smashed on his chest with a sledgehammer. By 1955, he toured NSW as a circus strongman and wrestler in boxing tents, gaining invaluable experience.
In 1959, Otto aimed for Bullens Circus—but first had to prove himself by carrying a 450kg horse up a 14ft ladder, replicating a legendary stunt by strongman William Pagel. He built the ladder and platform himself and trained with a pony before nailing the feat with a palomino. This became his
signature act, performed over 2,000 times.
Asked why he loved strongman stunts, Otto laughs, “I think I liked to show off. “Lifting weights didn’t look impressive, but lifting people or cars? That got attention. Same weight, bigger impact.”
He has had appearances on shows like the Mike Walsh Show, where he recalls lifting a mini car with his legs in a dangerous stunt.
In the ’60s, Otto toured internationally with circuses and wrestling shows in South Africa, England, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. He realised a longtime dream in 1971 by pulling two planes in a tug of war at Rotterdam Airport. His final record-breaking plane pull took place in Hervey Bay many years later, earning him a Guinness World Record.
In 1985, Otto won Mr. Australia after a standout 1984, taking Masters titles in Mr. Sydney, Mr. Oceania, and Mr. Southern Hemisphere. He also became state and national powerlifting champion in the 82.5kg class.
Otto moved his family to Hervey Bay in 1995 and opened Otto’s Fitness World. “I thought people would know me from my stunts,” he laughs. “Then I got run over by cars out front—great gym promo!” He ran the gym for a decade. “Owning a gym was a dream come true.”
Otto inspired many. At 70, he did 1,125 push-ups in 30 minutes to raise money for a boy needing a motorised wheelchair.
On November 12, 2000, Otto was awarded the Australian Sports Medal, honouring his lasting impact on Australian sport, a proud and welldeserved recognition.
When asked if there was a feat he wished he’d tried, Otto said, “Oldtime strongman Cannonball Richards stood in front of a cannon and took a cannonball to the chest, flying back into a net. I always wanted to try that.”
Otto is private about his personal life but loves sharing stories from his career, he has written his autobiography, Strongman, which is a great read! You can also watch his videos on YouTube.
Otto sometimes partners with friend Michael Green, owner of Integrated Development Academy, around charity events, including a run for Parkinson’s that Otto sponsored, having lived with Parkinson’s for 25 years.
Here is a man who hasn’t just lived a life, he has truly lived, embracing every moment with passion and purpose.
