THE FRASER Coast Property Industry Association is understood to have initiated a quiet but deliberate campaign to push for the closure of the Torquay Beach Caravan Park well over a year ago, long before the matter appeared on the public’s radar.

The anger directed at the Council over the closure of the Torquay Caravan Park is unfair. From the outset, the direction and influence of the FCPIA figure has driven the narrative.

The audacity of FCPIA’s conduct has exposed a deep misalignment between the organisation and the community it purports to represent. The policy appears more akin to a speculative misstep, comparable in judgment to inserting a

Despite strong concerns from internal and external stakeholders regarding the reputational risks for FCPIA, the proposal proceeded, resulting in the current ugly, but avoidable,

The Easter holiday period has served as a public litmus test for the FCPIA.

From Point Vernon to Urangan, the Fraser Coast came alive with activity. The Torquay Beach Caravan Park was filled to capacity, supporting surrounding businesses and reinforcing its role as a major economic driver. Visitors reported spending $1,000 to $2,000 per stay. With over ninety sites in the park, the cumulative benefit to the local economy reached into the hundreds of thousands—real, measurable income for a broad network of small

Nevertheless, the FCPIA continues to stand by its position, unfazed by the broader implications.

According to President Glen Winney, the parkland ‘should be accessible to all residents and tourists, rather than being reserved for a select few who book into caravan parks, thereby monopolising the prime views and access.’ He further asserts that ‘no investor would consider building high-end accommodations or permanent apartments facing the unattractive backyards of caravanners’.

Given Mr Winney’s dual role as FCPIA President and a major regional developer, his comments on potential development benefits, while not improper, may give rise to perceptions that are inconsistent with the neutrality expected of FCPIA.

The contradiction between the industry body’s claims and the facts on the ground over Easter are stark. The existing foreshore, stretching across multiple suburbs, was underutilised during the school holidays. Public space was readily available, and the claim that caravan park users are monopolising views or access is difficult to reconcile with observed reality.

Of immense concern is the impact this campaign is having on the local business community. Many operators depend on the steady stream of visitors the caravan park brings. Reports of financial distress, emotional strain, and potential job losses are real and current. It is troubling that these outcomes appear to have been either overlooked or dismissed by the FCPIA.

Before formal community consultation has even begun, over 5,600 hard copy signatures on a valid Council Standing Orders petition, 200 business endorsements on the same petition, and 2,200

online petition signatures have already been lodged in opposition to the FCPIA’s plan to shut down the Torquay Beach Caravan Park. Ouch.

Mr Winney alleges ‘While we understand that this is a divisive issue, a few vocal social media comments do not equate to a representative community view’.

The FCPIA’s policy engagement has expanded dramatically, with forty-two items listed for 24/25, covering areas like infrastructure, water security, youth services, and regional development, traditionally managed by local, state, and federal governments or actual qualified agencies. Who exactly asked them to intervene?

Mr Winney states that the proposal to close the caravan park ‘was extensively debated and unanimously agreed upon by our executive committee, with no formal opposition from our members’. However, in discussions I have held with members of the Executive, the SubCommittee and broader members, materially different recollections of those events have been conveyed.

The FCPIA has largely conducted its campaign to close the Torquay Beach Caravan Park behind closed doors, avoiding public scrutiny through controlled internal processes. While this may have preserved narrative control to date, that position is unlikely to hold.

With the full timeline of their agenda unfolding, alongside a projected cost to ratepayers exceeding $100,000 in a financially strained region, questions of accountability will intensify, potentially rendering certain positions untenable.

When we opened our property up in 2018 as an RV park, we were encouraged to do so by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

We are providing a service to the community by allowing big rigs in particular the larger motorhomes with the smaller cars attached to them and the coach style motorhomes as we are able to take on all types of vehicles with lots of room available on our property. We also cater to school groups.

We wholeheartedly support keeping the Torquay Caravan Park open as this is another Tourism business that is important for the Fraser coast as it supports small business in the region.

We are a small husbandand-wife team here and we provide an excellent service for the Community by allowing big rigs to come and stay at our park.

This has a knock on effect as it frees up the traffic flow in Hervey Bay and also creates more spending in the local businesses.

Without our nature based RV park here these big rigs would be bypassing Hervey Bay altogether and that would be more revenue lost for small businesses.

If the council are successful in closing the Torquay Caravan Park, this will be another lost Tourism business

that brings in revenue for small business in the region, which in turn affects the economic foot print for the region.

The Fraser Coast does not need more green space on The Esplanade.

The Torquay Caravan Park is a huge asset for the Fraser Coast, just like our park is.

Why take away an asset that supports small business and brings tourists to the region?

We have the petition here for anyone who wants to sign it and it will also be available at the River Heads Hall.

As keen caravaners ourselves we believe in progress and Hervey Bay is now a different proposition for residents and tourists than it was when the current caravan parks were established.

The beautiful foreshore will only ever fully deliver its potential if it is totally returned to nature with parkland and open green spaces.

Real economic growth which will support local business will come from the tourism dollar of 5-star hotels not caravaners. If you really want to move the needle then we must ante-up and build it - they will come.

Since leaving Fraser Coast Regional Council, I’ve avoided commenting on Council matters — but this time, I have to speak up.

As someone who’s volunteered more than 1500 hours as a surf lifesaver on the beaches of Hervey Bay — mostly on quiet Sunday afternoons — I’ve had the privilege of countless interactions with guests from the Torquay Caravan Park. From first aids and searches for missing kids, to rescuing wayward footballs and having chats with people from all over, this park is part of the heartbeat of our foreshore. It also played a vital role in one of the best things I’ve ever been involved in — the 2018 A-Class Catamaran World Championships. We welcomed competitors and visitors from around the globe, and Hervey Bay shone. Without the Torquay Caravan Park, an event of that scale wouldn’t have been possible. It gave us the space, the energy, and the vibe to pull it off. Don’t just take my word for it — check out what others said about it here: https://lnkd. in/geZHaxqc

The value of the Torquay Caravan Park isn’t just economic — it’s cultural, social, and deeply personal. It connects us to visitors, helps support local events, and makes memories that last a lifetime.

FRASER Coast residents are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and help grow a greener future, with three free community tree planting events planned over the coming months.

To mark Volunteer Week (17 May), World Environment Day (8 June) and National Tree Day (26 July), Fraser Coast Regional Council is hosting a series of planting days across the region as part of its goal to plant 100,000 trees by 2030.

Each event will run from 8am to 10am and include tree planting and a free BBQ breakfast.

Mayor George Seymour said the events were a great way for residents to give back to the environment and the community.

“Planting trees is one of the simplest and most effective ways we can enhance our natural environment and create greener, healthier spaces for everyone,” he said.

Environment spokesperson

Cr Zane O’Keefe said the events would suit all ages and were designed to be fun and educational.

“Whether you’re passionate about nature or just want to spend a morning outdoors with your family, these tree planting days are a great opportunity to

get involved,” Cr O’Keefe said.

“These events are also about community – they bring people together to enjoy the outdoors, discover what makes our natural areas special, and make a lasting contribution to the places we love.”

“We’ll supply everything – plants, gloves and tools –and all the planting sites are suitable for kids, so it’s a great way to introduce children to caring for the environment.”

The three events will take place at:

Cr O’Keefe said the tree planting events also helped shine a light on the fantastic work of local volunteer groups supported through Council’s Community Environment Program.

“These groups play a vital role in protecting and restoring our natural environment, and we hope more people will be inspired to join them after participating in these events,” he said.

Participants are asked to wear a hat, sunscreen, enclosed shoes and to pre-register online. For more information or to register, visit https://www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/whatson-environment.

A TOWERING crane helping to expand Hervey Bay Hospital has been given a heartfelt name – Wayne the Crane – in memory of muchloved local plumber Wayne Kuskie, who passed away in February.

Wayne dedicated more than 36 years of service to the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS), having started his plumbing apprenticeship in 1989. In tribute to his legacy, the crane now bears his name as part of the hospital’s ongoing expansion project.

WBHHS Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said the decision to name the crane in Wayne’s honour reflected the deep admiration held for him across the health service and the broader community.

“Wayne spent more than three decades as a dedicated member of our team, where he became known not just for his excellent skills as a plumber, but for his warmth, humour and kindness,” Ms Carroll said.

“Renowned for his largerthan-life personality, Wayne was often heard singing while he worked, sharing his infectious positivity and bringing joy to all those

around him.

His recent passing leaves a profound gap in the hearts of our WBHHS family.

“Having ‘Wayne the Crane’ proudly displayed on the crane for the duration of the project will serve as a reminder of Wayne’s incredible legacy and his enduring impact on his workplace and community.”

The crane-naming competition involved over 70 Fraser Coast students, with more than 1,800 community votes cast to choose the winner. WBHHS Project Director Alison Smith praised the creativity and engagement from local schools.

“A huge congratulations to Rose from Tinana State School, who submitted the

winning name,” she said.

“Rose will receive a LEGO crane, a water bottle, and see her chosen name proudly displayed.”

“Also, thank you to our runners up, Isabelle, Samuel, Halayna, Charles and Noah, for their wonderful, shortlisted names of ‘Helper’, ‘Titan’ and ‘Atlas’.

“We thank everyone who took part in the competition – the students’ ideas remind us that our future is in great hands, and we look forward to seeing them take pride in this part of our hospital’s growth.”

The crane is currently assisting in major upgrades, including a new inpatient unit, intensive care unit, and rooftop helipad, all part of enhancing care at Hervey Bay Hospital.

FOUR new five-hectare district recreation parks will be needed over the next two decades to meet the needs of the growing Fraser Coast region.

Fraser Coast Regional Council adopted ‘Park Strategy 2041’ to guide the planning, development and management of the region’s parks.

Cr Daniel Sanderson said Park Strategy 2041 would help shape the region’s new Planning Scheme and ensure the Fraser Coast’s parks remain high-quality, accessible and well-maintained as the population continues to grow.

“Parks bring communities together, encourage active lifestyles, and protect our natural environment,” he said.

“Council manages more than 600 parks across the Fraser Coast, covering thousands of hectares - from local playgrounds to large bushland reserves.

“This strategy ensures we have the right parks, in the right places, with the right facilities for our growing communities.”

Park Strategy 2041 introduces a new approach to planning, developing and maintaining Fraser Coast’s parks, focusing on:

• Better park locations –ensuring new parks are placed where they’re most needed;

• Larger, well-equipped parks – shifting away from smaller, underused spaces;

• Smarter land planning – securing open spaces in growing suburbs before they are developed;

• Improved maintenance and upgrades – using better mapping and planning tools to ensure parks remain in good condition.

Cr Lachlan Cosgrove said the strategy highlights that while the region has plenty of open space, much of it is small or not well-suited for recreation.

“We have many small parks and areas set aside for drainage or other purposes, but not enough larger parks that can serve the whole

community,” he said.

“Based on population projections, four new fivehectare district recreation parks will be needed to meet demand by 2041, especially in highgrowth areas such as Hervey Bay’s southwest and the Craignish-Dundowran region.

“By taking a long-term approach, we can improve park quality, reduce maintenance costs over time and ensure our open spaces support our region’s lifestyle.

“Park Strategy 2041 is about making smart, strategic decisions today so our parks continue to be great places for families, sports and relaxation in the future.”

A copy of Park Strategy 2041 is available on Council’s website at www.frasercoast. qld.gov.au/publications under ‘Strategies’.

FRASER Coast residents can expect more diverse performances, improved facilities and greater opportunities for local artists as part of the Brolga Theatre’s new five-year strategic plan.

Fraser Coast Regional Council endorsed the Brolga Theatre Strategic Plan 2025-2029, ensuring the venue continues to be the region’s premier destination for entertainment, creativity and community connection.

Arts and Culture spokesperson Cr Sara Diana Faraj said the new plan will ensure the Brolga Theatre continues to grow, evolve and serve the community’s needs.

“Since opening in July 2000, the Brolga Theatre has become a local icon, bringing world-class entertainment to the Fraser Coast,” she said.

“It’s more than just a stage

– it’s where stories are told, creativity flourishes and people come together. This strategy will expand opportunities for local artists, enhance theatre facilities, and ensure the Brolga remains a welcome and inspiring space for all.”

The five-year strategy focuses on four key priorities:

– Upgrading facilities, activating outdoor spaces and prioritising its use as a theatre and performing arts space;

– Showcasing national, international, and local performances;

– Enhancing accessibility, inclusivity and engagement with local organisations;

– Providing leadership, industry partnerships, and opportunities for emerging artists.

The plan was developed following extensive community engagement in late 2024. Over 80 stakeholders contributed to the strategy’s development, while a public survey attracted almost 100 responses with 85% of participants agreeing with the vision for the theatre’s future.

“The Brolga Theatre is a part of the social fabric of the region, while also helping bring visitors to the Fraser Coast,” Cr Faraj said.

“This plan reinforces our commitment to keeping the Brolga Theatre as the heart of performing arts in our region for years to come.”

SOLAR panels, archival shelving, crime prevention initiatives and field lighting upgrades are among the projects supported under the latest round of Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Community Grants Program.

A total of $59,091.61 will be distributed to 11 successful applicants, ensuring continued investment in local groups that support and enrich the Fraser Coast community.

Communities spokesperson

Cr Phil Truscott said the funding program helped strengthen the region’s cultural, recreational, and community services.

“Our community grants provide much-needed financial assistance to grassroots organisations that make a real difference in our region,” Cr Truscott said.

“This round will support projects ranging from heritage preservation and sporting infrastructure upgrades to crime prevention initiatives and events that bring people together. It’s fantastic to see such a broad cross-section of the community benefiting from this funding.”

Some of the local successful applicants and their funded projects are:

$3,000 for the Second Life Project, supporting survivors of domestic violence.

– $5,000 for the installation of solar panels to improve sustainability.

– $2,000 to help deliver the Fraser Coast Science and Engineering Challenge 2025.

– $1,947 for crime prevention promotion activities.

– $1,286 for presentation equipment.

– $2,000 to support programs and

activities at the Women’s Shed.

– $15,000 to replace field lighting and improve sports facilities.

Cr Truscott said the grants program helped community groups bring their projects to life, with funding allocated across four rounds each financial year.

“By supporting these initiatives, we’re fostering a more connected and inclusive community, whether that’s through sporting clubs, historical preservation, environmental sustainability, or social events,” he said.

organisation

struggling to access vital medical treatment.

Community Flights, a registered charity, provides free aircraft transport for patients and their carers to attend non-emergency medical appointments and services across Southeast Queensland.

The initiative was launched in 2022 by Mark McMurtrie, the owner of River Heads Pharmacy, after hearing countless stories from customers unable to access specialist treatment in the region.

With long-distance travel posing significant financial and emotional challenges for those needing heart, brain, and cancer therapy, McMurtrie took action to ensure that no one would have to forgo treatment due to their location.

"We recognised that healthcare accessibility is a major barrier for many regional patients," McMurtrie said.

"Our mission is simple – to close that gap and make sure people can receive the care they need without the added burden of travel."

The demand for medical transport is immense, with over 440 patients requiring assistance each month from Hervey Bay and Bundaberg alone. To meet this need, McMurtrie now pilots his Hervey Bay-based aircraft alongside a dedicated team of 10

volunteer pilots. Together, they transport patients safely and free of charge to specialist appointments across the region.

In addition to pilots, Community Flights relies on ground support from volunteers who coordinate flight schedules, assist patients with boarding, and ensure smooth operations.

The service not only alleviates financial stress but also provides emotional relief for patients who might otherwise face exhausting road trips or unaffordable commercial flights.

Community Flights relies on community support to sustain and expand its vital service. The

organisation encourages individuals and businesses to contribute through donations, sponsorships, volunteering, or by participating in its monthly online cash prize raffle.

"Every contribution helps us keep this service running and ensures that patients can continue their treatment without financial strain," McMurtrie added.

"We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our supporters, who help make a real difference in people's lives."

To subscribe to their monthly online cash prize raffle, donate, become a sponsor or volunteer, or to request a flight please go to our website at www.communityflights. org.au

A DEDICATED group of local volunteers is taking bold steps to protect the ecosystems of the Fraser Coast, with a focus on tackling the threat posed by invasive species.

Friends of Vernon Conservation Park (FVCP) is a community-driven organisation passionate about preserving the area’s biodiversity for future generations. With at least eleven endangered or vulnerable species calling the region home, their efforts are crucial.

The FVCP is concerned about the impact of invasive pests such as foxes, Yellow Crazy ants, and fire ants.

These species disrupt habitats and pose a risk to the local farming industry. In response, the group has ramped up its conservation activities, contributing time and resources to create a comprehensive biodiversity list for Vernon Conservation Park (VCP).

Their work includes weeding, rubbish removal, research, and adding valuable data to the iNaturalist database, helping track and protect the region’s flora and fauna.

One of the group’s new initiatives is its expanding feral animal control program, using scent detection dogs.

These specially trained dogs are far more efficient at locating feral species than humans. They can travel up to 30 kilometres a day—nearly three times the distance humans can cover. This speed and precision make them a game-changer in the fight against invasive species.

Recently, FVCP’s efforts were given a boost when one of its members, ant specialist Nigel Main, located five colonies of Yellow Crazy ants in the Maryborough district. These colonies were promptly destroyed by the Fraser Coast Council, thanks to the group’s work.

With the support of a small grant from the Fraser Coast Regional Council, the group is determined to continue its

mission to protect the region’s biodiversity.

Volunteers and local experts alike are rallying behind this program, which has already made a tangible impact on conservation efforts in the area.

As the FVCP pushes forward with its mission, the community’s collective effort remains a beacon of hope for preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the Fraser Coast for generations.

As part of their ongoing efforts, FVCP is seeking volunteers with dog-handling experience to assist with the scent detection dogs program. If you’re interested in contributing, contact Ted at 0409 803 568 for more information.

FAMILY First is a grass roots political party established to restore traditional Australian values and support the fundamental building block of a healthy society, the family.

Family First is a party that supports and advocates for faith, life, family, and freedom. Religious freedoms and the rights of faith based schools and businesses to employ people who share the same values. Life at all stages should be cherished, from conception through to natural death. Parental rights should be upheld, including the right for parents to choose the education for their children. Women and children should be protected from gender ideology and be confident they are safe participating in sport and in women’s facilities. Families would be well served by cutting the costs of living by decreasing petrol prices and electricity prices. Our diggers fought long and hard to protect our freedoms and way of life in Australia. We should honour them by continuing the fight.

In Hinkler for the upcoming Federal election the Family First candidate is Mrs Kerry Petrus.

Kerry and her husband, Andrew, live with their teenage daughter at Torbanlea. Kerry began full time work as a governess on an outback sheep station and remains passionate about education and access for regional communities to quality services. Kerry works part-time as a secondary teacher at Carinity Education - Glendyne at Nikenbah and runs her own business She IT, training women in their own homes on their laptops and mobile phones.

This upcoming election is the first time that people here in the Hinkler electorate will have a chance to show the major parties that we want to look after and protect families. We work hard to be able to support our family; to put a roof over their heads and food on the table, let’s vote in a way to protect them and put Family First first.

I’M RUNNING for Hinkler because we are in the grip of a cost of living, housing and climate crisis and the major parties are too out of touch to deliver the solutions we need.

Too many in our community are struggling to pay the bills, rents and mortgage payments are out of control, and the climate crisis is getting worse every day.

Meanwhile, the major parties give handouts and subsidies to big corporations, one in three of whom pay no tax.

The Greens have a plan to make big corporations pay their fair share so we can fund dental and mental health into Medicare, make GP visits free, cap rent increases, and deliver cheaper mortgages.

We will stop the big supermarkets ripping us off by making price gouging illegal.

And we will tackle the climate crisis by putting a stop to new coal and gas projects and investing in renewables, which will bring down power bills and create new jobs in clean energy.

With this election likely to result in a hung parliament, more Greens in the House and Senate will keep Dutton out and get Labor to act.

We can’t keep voting for the same parties and expecting a different result. We need a change.

COMMUNITY matters to me, and I want to use my professional experience and community connections to get things done in Hinkler.

I know the challenges people face, whether it’s looking for work, paying bills, or finding somewhere to live.

I know individuals and families are doing it tough and that’s why I was compelled to become the Labor candidate for Hinkler in this election.

This election, your choice matters.

Together, in just three years, we’ve reduced inflation, lifted wages and delivered tax cuts. Interest rates are falling and more energy relief is coming.

There’s more to do. Labor will strengthen Medicare, cap PBS medications at $25, take $150 off your next power bill and deliver more tax cuts.

Peter Dutton will cut things you need, like cost of living relief and Medicare, while increasing taxes to pay for his $600 billion nuclear plan.

We can’t afford Dutton – he cuts, you pay.

I am proud of my reputation for getting things done and I’m ready to use my years of experience and passion to be the first female MP for Hinkler. I will always fight and work hard for you, and am committed to building Hinkler’s future, together.

ALLOW me to introduce myself, I am Tyler Carman and I have been given the opportunity to represent the seat of Hinkler as the candidate for One Nation at the upcoming 2025 federal election.

I joined One Nation after watching ALP and LNP fail time and time again to put Australians into a better position and I believe that without real change the cycle will continue and Australians will be worse off.

As a local Mortgage Broker, I see firsthand the struggles people are facing to get into the local property market, the level of debt consolidation has increased and homelessness is at an all time high.

This is due to poor government policy.

I am working towards a comprehensive plan to address the key issues that matter most to Australians: more affordable housing, lower inflation, lower power prices, and reduced taxes for small businesses.

Affordable Housing for All:

I am committed to making housing more accessible for Australians.

Lowering Inflation:

We know how tough it’s been with rising costs.

Lower Power Prices:

We will work towards reducing energy costs by investing in affordable energy solutions and reducing reliance on high-cost energy imports.

Tax Relief for Small Businesses: Small businesses are the backbone of our economy.

BLACK TIE CHARITY

WHAT began as a heartfelt promise in the quiet grief of loss has blossomed into a touching act of generosity.

When Savanah's beloved grandmother, affectionately known as Nannie, spent her final days at Fraser Coast Hospice three years ago, it left a deep impression. In honour of the compassionate care her family received, Savanah decided to grow her hair— with one goal in mind: to one day give back.

Now, after three years of nurturing every strand, Savanah is ready for "The Big Chop."

Her transformation will take place at the upcoming Mad Hatter's Mis-Matched Tea Party, where friends, family, and community members are invited to witness not just a haircut, but the culmination of a personal journey of healing, remembrance, and purpose.

Savanah’s family during their time of need.

"Your loved ones never go away as long as they stay in your memories and hearts," Savanah shared.

The hair she has so lovingly grown will be donated to create a wig for someone facing medical hair loss.

Meanwhile, funds raised through the event will support Fraser Coast Hospice, helping them continue to provide the same fee-free, dignified care that brought comfort to

"The hospice was able to supply our family with a safe and dignified space for our Nannie."

With a goal of raising $2,000, Savanah is inviting the community to contribute—whether by donating online or by attending the tea party Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM at The Clubhouse Hervey Bay. Every dollar raised helps ensure that

Fraser Coast Hospice remains a place of peace and compassion for others navigating the end-of-life journey.

The symbolic haircut will be provided by local hairdresser Carrie, who has volunteered her time and skills for the cause.

THE TEMPERATURE has started to drop on the Fraser Coast. Along with this drop in temperature, we get the sniffles, runny noses and scratchy throats seem to come hand in hand.

But why do we get colds more often in winter? Why does the change in temperature cause more colds?

The answer is due to a mix of environmental factors, human behaviour, and how viruses thrive.

During the cooler months, we spend more time indoors.

In enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, viruses spread more easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, or touching shared surfaces.

The proximity to others means one sick person can quickly pass a virus to many others.

Dry air also plays a role. Winter air, both outside and inside (due to heating), tends to be drier.

This dries out the mucous membranes in our nose and

first line of defence against airborne pathogens.

You might notice the dry lips and dry nostrils. When they are dry and irritated, it is easier for viruses to invade.

Some viruses, like the rhinovirus (the most common cause of colds), survive longer

in cold, dry conditions. This increases the chances of exposure and infection. So, while wintry weather does not directly cause colds, it creates the perfect environment for viruses to spread and for our defences to weaken.

This is one of those instances where prevention is

Wash your hands often, stay warm, and keep your immune system strong through good sleep, nutrition, and hydration.

It is important that if you are unwell, it might be an opportunity to stay home and use those facemasks to prevent spread.

It is also important to remember that respiratory viruses such as the common cold and influenza do not respond to antibiotics.

Simple remedies to assist with symptoms are key along with rest.

Finally, immunisations are so important at preventing influenza and covid.

Immunisation has demonstrated that it will prevent you from becoming unwell needing hospitalisation and others around you.

Please roll up your sleeves and stay well during the cooler months.

LORNA Hill was born in Auckland, New Zealand, with deep family roots in Northland. Her mother was from Dargaville, and her father from Pawarenga.

“We always used to say they lived in the sticks,” Lorna laughs. Proud of her Maori heritage, Lorna identifies with the Hokianga region. Interestingly, her maiden name was Rudolph, a nod to her German ancestry, a reflection of New Zealand’s rich cultural integration dating back to the 1800s.

Lorna’s childhood was challenging. The youngest of three, she experienced the separation of her parents early on. Over time, the family grew with additional halfsiblings. Despite this, Lorna always valued education. Living with asthma made school even harder, especially during the 1970s in New Zealand, but she persevered.

Lorna’s first job was at age fourteen in Auckland, working Friday nights at a department store called McKenzies. She’d catch the bus into the city after school, an experience that gave her independence early on.

After her parents separated, her father moved to Australia. Lorna earned her school certificate at fifteen, but before she could consider university, her mother decided they would move to Australia, changing everything.

“That’s when resilience kicked in,” Lorna explains. “When you have limited control over what’s happening around you, you feel sadness and disappointment—but resilience helps you survive. I learned that from a young age.”

At sixteen, Lorna arrived in Brisbane with her mum as her dad was already there. When her mum returned to New Zealand, Lorna

stayed behind with him. The move was a culture shock—Sydney’s bustling population alone felt bigger than all of New Zealand. Determined to finish school, she completed a year in NSW, then Grade 12 at Yeronga State High in Queensland. Earning her Tertiary Entrance Score was a proud moment that paved the way for her future as a special needs teacher.

Today, Lorna is an energetic sixtyyear-old. This May, she’ll return to Avondale College in Auckland for its 80th Jubilee. School was a haven for her, even through family hardships. Lorna is married to Bob, a former banana grower and a ten-pound Pom, who is nearly ninety. The couple met running and have been happily married for about thirtyseven years. “He used to be a better runner than I,” she laughs. Together, they raised their daughter Julia, born

when Lorna was thirty-five.

“Julie is now twenty-four and is, among other things, a violinist, having been taught at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Currently, she is in Tokyo and works at a high level in academia. We love her to bits and are very supportive of her.”

Lorna’s teaching career spans nearly four decades, teaching kids with special needs. “Each child is different. You support them to be as independent as they can be.”

After a job transfer to Hervey Bay in 2003, Lorna embraced an active lifestyle—joining the Outriggers Club, learning belly dancing, and even dragon boating. In fact, she’ll be part of Hervey Bay’s first celebration of World Belly Dance Day on May 10th, as part of a global shimmy mob.

About twelve months ago, she

taught belly dance, leading a group called Arabian Nights Bollywood Dreams. The music and movement offered a joyful fusion of cultures. While she no longer teaches dance, she still loves to take part.

Despite all her accomplishments, Lorna says the most important thing in her life is family. Her mother, still in New Zealand, now has dementia, and Lorna visits whenever she can.

“Always be present with your partner and family,” she advises. “Help where you can.”

If you see Lorna jogging around town or at Parkrun, say hi. She’s aiming for her 300th Parkrun at the end of the year. For Lorna, nothing beats a bit of exercise and enjoying the beauty of the Fraser Coast.
