Dear Editor
My Heading should really be: E-bike Debacle. The Council in their Wisdom? have foisted upon us the E-bike calamity causing consternation for all people using the Esplanade as their main source of exercise; walking used to be so much fun until the deadly use of E-bikes, or should we call them The
Deadly Silent Assassins?
The only true way to control the outlandish behaviour of the E-bike riders is to ban the contraptions totally. However, I cannot see the council doing
ON PAGES 22 and 23 of today’s issue, you will find all of the finalists in the 2023 Fraser Coast Business and Tourism People’s Choice Awards.
Well in excess of two-hundred local businesses and businesspeople were nominated for the awards project across sixteen broad categories.
Now it all comes down to you. You need to vote.
Positive customer feedback and recognition are invaluable for local businesses. They serve as powerful endorsements that bolsters a company’s reputation and growth.
When customers like you, take the time to provide positive feedback, it boosts the morale of business owners and employees, which is a
this as they reap revenue from the E-bike hire companies, and so once again the poor suffering ratepayers have to put up with stupid Council decisions!!
We should force the Council members to walk the walk of shame by making them walk along the Esplanade as the E-bike riders mow them down.
Alan MouleEach week I hear of more people not walking on the beachfront pathway as it’s too dangerous. These scooters
are silent and fast, even if regulated and I am reading that France has just from today banned the rental ones. They have been legal since 2018 and the accidents and injuries have gotten out of hand. Here in Long St, the private ones are flying past obviously going to work, school or fun often 2 or 3 on, and no helmets. Another accident waiting to happen with them is coming out of driveways particularly in Pialba Place, Stockland or petrol stations as it’s normal to drive out to the edge as you check for traffic. Now I pull up on the property boundary as
great story for our region.
Word-of-mouth recommendations are a driving force for local businesses, and happy customers are more likely to share their ‘job well done’ experiences with friends and family.

She had to continually drive forward back into her space as the traffic would not let her out. After about 15 minutes a kind elderly gentleman stopped to help her as every attempt to reverse out was foiled by such impatient and rude people who would not let her back out. He stood

Dear Editor,
During this year’s Dementia Action Week (18-24 September) we are encouraging people to learn more about the signs and symptoms of the condition
and how to make their communities more accessible to people living with dementia.
There are estimated to be more than 400,000 Australians living with dementia and more than 1.5 million involved in their care - and those numbers are set to rise.
As dementia diagnoses increase, it’s important to learn more about the signs and symptoms and how to make our communities more accessible to people living with dementia. That’s why this year’s theme for Dementia Action Week (18-24 September) is ‘Act Now for a Dementia-Friendly Future’.
Many people can continue to live well with dementia, but it’s important they feel supported in their community.
Greater awareness helps to create discussion and break down stigma or barriers that could stop people from seeking help.
Increasing our understanding of dementia can make a big difference in the lives of people around us who are impacted.
There are things we can all do to make our communities more dementia-friendly. To find out how you can make a difference, please visit dementia.org.au.
Yours Sincerely,
Congratulations to everyone involved with this fabulous open garden event at Craignish.

Queensland Fraser Coast volunteers put on a magnificent morning tea for over 30 people, in one of the region’s most creative gardens.
Owners Rita and Tony were
perfect hosts.
When we weren’t exclaiming at the wonderous collection of sculptures built by Tony, we were enthralled by the huge variety of plants and wildlife.
The event was a complete success thanks to the tireless work of the loveliest volunteers, who also welcomed two new members on the day!
The money raised goes directly to supporting cancer patients with accommodation and transport services, emotional support services and of course research into prevention and cure.
So maybe it’s a good time to join in with our Fraser Coast volunteer crew for more fun times like this!
The more the merrier!

Creating an effective local government hinges on the core principles of being easily reachable, approachable, and readily accessible to the community it serves.
As a candidate running for the Division 10 council elections in March 2024, it has become abundantly clear that the constituents of Division 10 are actively seeking a local
council representative who can be easily contacted and who actively engages with the local community.
It is evident that the people deserve a representative who will act as the vital link between their needs and the elected body.
To wholeheartedly commit to this endeavour, I am delighted to announce that, if elected as the Division 10 Councillor, I will establish a self-funded divisional office within our community.
This office will serve as a dedicated space for residents to reach out, voice their concerns, share their innovative ideas, and seek assistance with local issues. It will be a place where accessibility and transparency thrive, enabling me to gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and aspirations of our community. My primary goal is to cultivate a stronger connection between the people of Division 10 and their local government. Through this office, I will tirelessly work to ensure that your voices resonate and that your needs are addressed. Together, we can forge a more vibrant, responsive, and united community that thrives on collaboration and active engagement.

JAN Hegge has been appointed and sworn in as the new Division 7 Fraser Coast Regional Councillor.
Council considered 26 written nominations for the position and appointed Jan Hegge following presentations from candidates and a secret ballot during a Special Meeting at the Council Chambers in Hervey Bay.
Mayor George Seymour thanked all 26 candidates for their keen interest in the position and willingness to represent the Fraser Coast.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jan Hegge as the new Fraser Coast Regional Councillor for Division 7,” he said.
“Jan has been serving the community in many ways over the past 40 years in business, through volunteering, running a charity, as a Queensland Government public servant and on Council previously.
“Cr Hegge will bring a unique viewpoint and different perspective that will enhance our decision-making as we work to build better communities together on the Fraser Coast.”
Cr Hegge, a former local small business owner who has worked in the government and not-for-profit sectors
and served three years as an Alderman on the Maryborough City Council, said she was honoured to have the opportunity to serve the residents of Division 7 and the Fraser Coast region.
“I am delighted to have been appointed Councillor for Division 7,” she said.
“I take this role and responsibility very seriously. I am eager to engage with the community and Councillors to take our region forward and ensure the Fraser Coast is a
great place to live, work and play.”
Cr Hegge’s appointment fills the vacancy left by former Councillor Darren Everard who resigned last month. As the vacancy occurred during the last year of the current Council term, Council was required by law to fill the position through appointment rather than via a by-election.

FRASER Coast Bereaved mothers, Kristy Barbour and Stephanie Whitcombe, are proud to be partnering with Red Nose Australia and SANDS to announce the Fraser Coast Walk to Remember. This heartfelt community event, taking place on Sunday October 1st at 9.30am, marks the beginning of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.
Pregnancy and infant loss is an unimaginable journey, one that affects countless families every year. The Fraser Coast Walk to Remember offers a safe and compassionate space for bereaved parents, grandparents, siblings, and supportive friends to come together and honor the babies
who reside forever in their hearts but not in their arms.
Being held at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre on October 1st, the family friendly event will feature a commemorative service to celebrate the lives of precious babies who were taken too soon, followed by a casual and symbolic walk and finishing with light refreshments provided to participants.
Tragedies like pregnancy and infant loss often become silenced, and the Fraser Coast Walk to Remember aims to change that. By coming together, families can not only honor the memory of their precious little ones but also create a supportive network for those who continue to navigate
the challenging path of grief. All those that feel that would find value in this important event are invited to join and become part of a community who understands.
To register, head to the Fraser Coast Walk to Remember on Facebook or visit www. stickytickets.com.au/trbmx/ fraser_coast_walk_to_ remember.aspx.
Fraser Coast Walk to Remember takes place at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, Sunday October 1st from 9.30am.

THE IMPORTANCE of the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum to not only the Fraser Coast Region but indeed to the national interest, has again been demonstrated with our Museum being just one of four places Australia wide selected to be part of a Commemoration Ceremony later this year.
On 30th September 2023, a unique ceremony will take place at the Hervey Bay Museum.
Members of the “Operation Pilgrimage Group”, representatives of the “Krait” Memorial, the RSL and invited VIP’s, will witness a moving ceremony commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the successful “Operation Jaywick”.
The raid by Australian Commandoes into Singapore Harbour on the night of 26th September 1943.
A similar ceremony will be held at Exmouth in Western Australia and just two other places in Australia.
Leader of the “Operation Pilgrimage Group’, Mr. Allan
Miles OAM, will attend and honour the Group which is dedicated to keeping alive the memory of Commandoes who served their Country.
Local historian, John Anderson says “Hervey Bay has a very close connection with the top secret World War II Commandoes training area on Fraser Island, recognition given after the war where the “KRAIT” and Z Force Memorials were established at Dayman Point, Urangan.”
The radio operator on the “Krait”, Mr. Horrie Young, retired to Hervey Bay in the 1960’s, started the local radio club here and brought with him his souvenir piece of the “Krait” which is now
on permanent display at the Museum.
The story of “Operation Jaywick” is told in detail at the Museum about a group of Commandoes sailing into enemy waters when Japan occupied Singapore, “secured” a local fishing boat which they renamed “Krait”, sailed back to Western Australia and fitted out the boat with collapsible canoes, limpet mines, explosives and provisions. They sailed back into Singapore Harbour and managed to attach the magnetic limpet mines onto Japanese ships. They then returned to Australia as “heroes”.
FRASER Coast community and sporting groups are encouraged to express their interest in leasing a vacant building on the Tavistock Street sporting fields in Torquay.
Cr David Lee said Council was offering a lease for up to 10 years at a peppercorn rate of $1 per year with expressions of interest open from Monday 11 September until Monday 9 October 2023.
“Council is keen to ensure we have connected, inclusive communities and spaces, and that we do we what we can to encourage community participation and activation,” he said.
“As the Fraser Coast
continues to grow, so too do community and sporting groups’ requirements for storage and meeting space.
“This is an opportunity for a local not-for-profit organisation to submit a proposal to use this building at the Tavistock Street sporting fields themselves or in a shared arrangement.
“The building is a prefabricated tin structure that does not have current building certification with the successful lessee to be responsible for obtaining certification and any required approvals.
“It is only being offered to not-for-profit community and sporting groups, the building is not available for commercial
use.”
Cr Lee said more information, including the request for proposal documents, was available on Council’s Engagement Hub website at https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/ community-lease-tavistock-st
“Proposal submissions are open for four weeks to give community groups time to do their due diligence and conduct a mandatory site inspection,” he said.
“Council’s leasing team are available to assist with general enquiries, and will consider and evaluate all the proposals to make a recommendation to Council to decide which group is provided the lease.”

LAST month the Fraser Coast hosted a group of “country” men that created friendships that some will last forever.
‘Are You Bogged Mate?’ is an organisation that is all about helping country blokes. They reach out to the rural community about mental health and suicide while spreading awareness about depression in the bush.
Last month, through the inkind support of local charity Rally For A Cause, brought a group of 16 ‘Bogged Brakes’ men to the region and enjoy the offerings of what makes Fraser Coast the best place to live.
Setting up their base at Susan River Homestead, the group enjoyed many locations including Whale Watching on the Tasman Venture.
The weekend also included a morning walk with local
Men’s Mental Health group
Men’s Walk and Talk Hervey Bay followed by a breakfast at the Hervey Bay Surf Club
Mary O’Brien, founder of ‘Are You Bogged Mate?’, said the weekend played a very important role for some men who are facing many challenges in the rural environment.
“Rural men find it hard to ask for help; this is our chance to bring together a group of
men with a love of the land and experience the benefits of the Fraser Coast”, says Mary.
“It’s an opportunity for you to get away, relax, make friends, build connections, and develop skills to un-bog yourself and others.”
Mary’s organisation began with an article “Are You Bogged Mate?” that instantly connected with tens of thousands of people across the world through social media platforms.
The men were provided dinners from a number of local caterers including Low'n'Slow BBQ Shack, Cooky’s Woodfire Pizzas and Undisputed BBQ.
Brett & Priscilla Howard said they receive great enjoyment from facilitating clients’ ideas for their wastewater projects. “A lot of the time we are coming into the project at the very start…we are there when our clients are taking the leap of faith towards their dream of owning and running a successful park”.
It is a real privilege to be part of the foundations of something so home grown. Jake and Ashleigh Dickinson’s campground ‘Eureka Station’ is just a stones through away from Hervey Bay in a large and relatively untouched pocket near Childers, Queensland. Boasting over 160 acres of lush native bushland, walking tracks, camp sites, caravan sites, glamping tents with a natural swimming pond.
Just one year after launching the Eureka Station Camping Retreat, proprietors Jake and Ashleigh have plans to develop the campground further…returning guests already enjoying the additional infrastructure and features that have popped up over the past year! Jake explains “Keeping the natural bushland was important to us and the reason I really liked the
“Amazingly they did it in one day – there was no mess left behind and they were respectful of the property”. We did have campers in at the time and they made sure the job site stayed safe whilst there was people in the campgrounds…. working within the taped of zones”.
The CWWS team enjoyed installing the new Taylex wastewater system at the site –providing environment responsible treatment and disposal of wastewater generated from the new amenities block, with a couple of the wastewater technicians looking to return in the near future as campers!
The natural pond at Eureka is a favourite with guests. Set in its peaceful bush surrounds, this natural swimming pond offers the perfect location to relax, cooloff and enjoy the serenity. Eureka Station’s location is close enough to access modern conveniences while being remote enough to make it feel like you are away from it all.
With school holidays upon us why not immerse yourself in nature and enjoy a night under-the stars –swag, tent, camper trailer, caravan or for those working their way up to camping – why not try the glamping tents?

FRASER Coast Regional Council is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of Dog’s Day Out, a pawsitively unmissable community event celebrating our furry friends and responsible pet ownership.
Cr Zane O'Keefe said Dog’s Day Out was designed to be both an educational event and a fun day out for the whole family.
"Having a pet can bring great joy, but it also comes with great responsibility,” he said.
“We encourage anyone with a dog to come along to check out the products available to pamper their pooches, learn about responsible pet care, and ensure their registration is up to date."
Based on feedback from last year’s event, Dogs Day Out will have a new home this year at Dayman Park in Urangan and at a new earlier time on Sunday, 15 October 2023, from 8am to 12pm.
As part of the event, pet owners will be able to renew their registration, pay fees, or register their animals for the first time.
Cr O’Keefe said Council offered free first-time dog registration and an animal desexing rebate of $50 for cats and $100 for dogs was
available to eligible pet owners.
“It is compulsory for dogs to be registered with Council from twelve weeks of age and within 14 days of owners moving to the Fraser Coast region, while dogs also need to be desexed before 22 weeks of age,” he said.
"The registration fees collected contribute to the cost of Council’s animal management operations, including compliance inspections, dog attack investigations, running animal pounds and the adoption centre, fenced off-leash areas, and responsible pet care programs.
“By registering dogs and ensuring they are
microchipped, pet owners play a pivotal role in reducing the number of animals that end up at the pound and aiding Council in reuniting lost pets with their owners.
“The event also offers valuable insights and resources for maintaining happy and healthy relationships with our four-legged companions. Don't miss out on this wag-tastic event that brings the community together to celebrate our furry friends and responsible pet ownership.”

LOCAL musician Steve Wright
was born, raised, and educated in Maryborough. Growing up in the suburb of Baddow, Steve enjoyed a semi-rural childhood, along with his three sisters and has wonderful memories of bike rides through the abundant bushland, creeks, and riverbanks, especially around the Baddow House area. These youthful adventures often involved exploring the natural surroundings and indulging in guava-picking from native trees along the riverbanks.
At the age of fifteen Steve worked as a boy labourer in a foundry at Walkers Limited Engineering. His family was not particularly musically inclined, save for one uncle who played the drums. This uncle introduced Steve to drumming with afternoon lessons that ignited his passion for music. Steve then joined the local brass band. From
there his proficiency on the drums continued to grow.
Little did he know at that time that he would forge an unexpectedly long and exciting career as a working drummer and percussionist, playing a broad range of music including jazz, blues, big band, funk/rock, musical theatre, and orchestral percussion.
The first cover band Steve joined was a Maryborough band called ‘Shadow Fax’, he stayed with the band until it broke up.
Steve says, “In the ‘80s, the pub and club scene was great here. At that stage, I was playing in three cover bands and there were lots of venues to play at. Today, there are more bands but fewer venues who want them, now a lot of venues only use solo artists. a definite reversal from the past.
In 1995, Steve left Maryborough to pursue his education at James
Cook University in Townsville. Initially pursuing an arts degree, he later received offers to specialise in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Geography, ultimately opting for Archaeology. Financial constraints led him to defer his studies, during which time he worked as a sheet metal worker. However, a full-time teaching opportunity with TAFE emerged, compelling him to put his degree on hold while he embarked on a rewarding teaching career, specialising in Technology Studies. While working full-time, Steve actively participated in various musical projects, including small jazz combos, a local big band, the Barrier Reef Orchestra of North Queensland, and musical theatre.
His passion for jazz music grew during his time in Townsville, expanding from traditional jazz to
more advanced styles, including bebop, cool jazz, and jazz fusion.
Steve describes the town as having a thriving jazz culture. This transition allowed him to elevate his drumming skills, network with other musicians, and secure paid gigs around the Sunshine Coast and beyond, even upon return to the Fraser Coast.
Over the years, Steve has been very fortunate to have worked with many Australian and international bands and artists both in Queensland and Europe. His highlights to date include performances with Australian music icons such as Don Burrows, Julie Anthony, and comedy duo “Scared Weird Little Guys”.
Steve cherishes the compliments he has received from fellow musicians and considers accolades from renowned figures like Errol Buddle as some of the highest praise.
Eventually, all the hard work culminated with invitations to perform at both the 2016 and 2019 opening gala concerts for the international music festival “EUROPAfest” held in Bucharest, Romania which led to being invited back in 2023, but this time as a member of the international jury for the prestigious Bucharest International Jazz Competition and to present jazz drumming workshops. Steve was impressed by the exceptional talent displayed by young musicians from various countries around the world. Steve has called Hervey Bay home since 2008 and collaborates with a wide range of musicians, both locally and across the country as his dedication to his craft continues. His experience serves as a testament to the transformative power of music and the boundless possibilities that can arise when one embraces new opportunities.
OBESITY, affects many people on the Fraser Coast.
Like the rest of the nation, we are grappling with an obesity epidemic that demands our attention. As the waistlines expand, it’s crucial for us come together to think of strategies to combat the rise in obesity related health problems. Ultimately, prevention is better than cure.
Treating obesity is complex, it is more than energy in versus energy out. There may be physical and psychological barriers to weight loss that may need to be addressed in addition to the lifestyle factors below. If you are struggling to lose weight, have a chat with your General Practitioner.
Technology and modern convenience have greatly the benefited us, with the likes of Uber Eats, electric scooters and mobile phones. However, it has increased the sedentary lifestyle across our population. Find and plan those 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
Poor dietary choice is another contributor to our rising obesity rates. The
convenience of fast food and processed foods, has led to a shift away from wholesome, home-cooked meals. Instead of a high sugar and nutrientpoor option, maybe choose an

apple or a glass of water. Your physical and mental health will thank you.
Locally, strategies are available to promote physical activity. These include development of the bike trails, increased accessibility of exercise equipment on the Esplanade and many exercise groups in our region. Perhaps, you can join a local sporting group or one of the many gyms.
To improve the health of our region, a multifaceted approach that combines education, community engagement, urban planning, and healthcare interventions is required. As individuals we can prevent obesity related diseases such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, strokes and heart disease, by making a few small changes like increasing your physical activity and making a few dietary changes. The obesity epidemic on the Fraser Coast demands urgent action from everyone in our community.

An event run by the disability community, for the disability community, will be held this month at Seafront Oval with some fantastic prizes on offer.
The Hervey Bay RSL is a proud sponsor of the event with $2000 in vouchers and prizes donated though the club’s Community Grants Program.
FestABLE spokeswoman Sarah Reed said last year’s event attracted a 3000-strong crowd and was live streamed to an additional 800.
This year’s FestABLE on Thursday, September 28 is set to top that number.
“With thanks to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program and other community stakeholders, this is a great chance to showcase all the wonderful
“The vision is not for just one afternoon, once a year, rather throughout the year, it creates roles for people with disabilities to build their capacity.”
There will be 80 different stall holders on the day, each charged with the task of providing an interactive experience for their guests.
“They can’t just bring a tent and a desk; they need to provide a role for people to participate in, to create value and thinking.
“We will also have a market stall area, all handmade goods by local NDIS recipients, which will also be amazing.

Over $4.9 million has gone back into the local community through donations, in-kind support and sponsorship since the inception of the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program 10 years ago.
NICOLE Rummell from Woolworths Pialba is a familiar face to many and has been named the Woolworths Care Leader of the Year for QLD, succeeding over 7,000 applications nationally.
With her passion for helping people and creating a vibrant experience, Nicole has been recognised for her remarkable fundraising efforts and for taking the lead in coordinating donations on behalf of the store, to support a range of community initiatives. This included the organisation of a fundraising effort for the Children's Hospital, raising $9,600.
“I have been working for Woolworths for eighteen years, always in Hervey Bay and always here at the Pialba store' Nicole said.
‘There are so many long-term regular customers here, you get to know them very well, both inside and outside work.”
"I have seen a huge amount of change over time, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is the community spirit and the kindness of people who venture into our store.”
“The Childrens Hospital fundraising program started out as wall tokens, that customers could purchase at the check-out and we did amazingly well with that.”
Nicole wanted to ensure as much money could be raised as possible, and she also knew that Hervey Bay still remained a tight-knit community who are always willing to lend a hand to a great cause.
“To help supplement our fundraising, we came up with the idea of doing some in-store raffles as well. I went out in my own time, visited local businesses and sought donations to help increase the amount of money raised.”
“The support of local businesses was incredible and we raised an additional $1,400 in a single day.”
“We have also started partnering with Hervey Bay High School, to provide breakfast for disadvantaged children who may not have eaten before they head to school. We are also doing gift cards and food for the homeless once a month.”
“I just love working here. I love the people and I really enjoy the opportunity of giving back to the community.”
COMING off the end of Women’s Health Week, it is important to acknowledge the continual battle that women face when seeking diagnosis for their pain.
This year’s theme for Women’s Health Week was ‘Grow your Knowledge’ and personally, this resonates with me.
In July this year, after 11 years of chronic pain and suffering, I underwent surgery for suspected endometriosis.
Following surgery, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Endometriosis.
When the surgeon diagnosed me, I burst into tears. I had doubted my pain for so many years and finally, I could breathe.
Ever since I was a young girl, I have been to several doctors, specialists, and hospitals with severe abdominal and pelvic pain that worsened over time.
Each time I was told to “Take Nurofen” or “Use a heat pack”, or “Nothing is wrong, toughen up.”

She is calling on women across Australia to share their experience for the committee before October 13th via: https://www.health. gov.au/womens-healthadvisory-council.

A 90TH birthday celebration is a great milestone for most, yet Violet Went had to play her favourite sport as part of her celebration – Tennis.
Violet gathered with some family and friends to the Torquay Tennis court for her celebration in which the court was there before Violet was born in Hervey Bay.
Violet was born here in 1933 and lived with her family at Ghost Hill. She recalls the famous “old water tower” where her father would look out during World War 2.
They could see the coastline clearly with a fear of enemy ships visiting our shores.
With her primary schooling at Pialba State, she had to attend
Maryborough High School for secondary education as there were no high schools in Hervey Bay.
This meant she had to board in Maryborough during the week and catch the train back to Hervey Bay on Friday.
“I was scared of the train” says Violet. She recalls an accident when chasing the train which lead to her falling off and having concussion.
The one doctor in Hervey Bay looked at her scars and sent her back to Maryborough for the hospital.
Then one afternoon her friend introduced her to a young man on a motor bike.
This gentleman was Robert ‘Bob’ Went became her husband for 68
years.
The marriage has created a large family that includes 17 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, with another due in December.
“I had 51 people at my birthday; all family. It was wonderful.” Says Mrs Went.
Violet only recently stopped her daily walk of three kilometres. “They want me to use my walker; the paths aren’t great.” She still drives her car short distances because “the roads are getting too busy. I like to drive to the tennis court.”
We all wish we were as active as Violet at her age.

The Fraser Coast Motor Centre has reopened their service department after being closed for the past 18 months since the 2022 floods. The dealership celebrated their opening with a morning of fun, celebration, and freebies, including a sausage sizzle, coffee, face painting, and giveaways for local families to enjoy.
The facility has been fully equipped to service all brand of vehicles and in particular the popular Ford, Hyundai and Suzuki cars. The Maryborough community have been anticipating the reopening for the convenience of having their service centre available again.
The dealership pride themselves in adopting the latest technology and ensuring their staff are trained as the highest level for their business status. This has been acknowledged as shown in the many achievements of
awards over the years that includes "Qld Apprentice of the Year, Qld Regional Service Advisor of the Year and Runner up in Fraser Coast Business of the Year."
Daniel Foley, Dealer Principal for the Fraser Coast Motor Centre, says there is a unique family environment in Maryborough. “Maryborough people value loyalty and it was important for use to have this facility back up and running”.
“It’s the family connections and generations that we are most proud of that, we want to continue this history and the legacy of those who have contributed to our organisation” says Mr Foley.
More than 20 years service is becoming a rarity in today’s employment landscape but finding people who have been with the one organisation for almost 50 years……..that is an incredible feat!
Martin Ritchie and Len Rowe are models for the term “loyal employees”. Marty and Len have worked for Fraser Coast Motor Centre 49 and 48 years respectively.
The proud Maryborough men worked from the Maryborough location for the entirety of their careers until the flood closure last year.
Martin Ritchie began with the then named car yard Tarrant’s a week before Christmas in 1973, with Len starting shortly the following year. Martin was fresh faced 15 year old, who had a passion for speedway, eagerly started his first day as a motor mechanic apprentice at the Maryborough business when “Hervey Bay was just a seaside town.”
That began a journey for both seeing multiple
Fraser Coast Motor Centre is the longest serving Ford dealership in Australia, and the first to sell motor cars into the Maryborough and Hervey Bay Region.
It was in 1898 when WJ Tarrant launched a cycle business in Adelaide Street, who would have known the business would still be operational for the next two centuries.
Mr Tarrant owned the first motor car in Maryborough and become the first motor
dealer in the town and one of few across Australia as an agent for Ford Motor Cars with Tarrant's Garage. This began the journey of Tarrants Ford which was the name until January 2010 and which is believed to be the oldest Ford agent in the Australia. Maryborough recognises this proud Ford history with a set of Ford keys on a bench at Adelaide Street with a photo of the original garage.
ownerships of the business and a career that is recognised as one of Ford Australia’s oldest dealerships. Their love of cars has seen a commitment to the dealership that combines nearly 100 years of experience working on cars.
Both men were on hand for the Maryborough Service Centre reopening and each were presented a plaque of their incredible long service that with be proudly mounted in the showroom wall of the dealership.
Dealer Principal, Daniel Foley, presented the men with their plaques at the reopening day to recognise “their loyal service” to the dealership.
Martin and Len are now both retired and share stories of their “retirement hobbies” that include some car restoration work in the process of vintage cars.

This property at just over 1000sqm is just waiting for the right buyer to unlock its potential. The house consists of two bedrooms, open plan living, kitchen, bathroom & separate toilet all in desperate need of refurbishing ... that’s the bad news, the good news is the property has original weatherboard cladding, hardwood floors and high ceilings — a renovator’s challenge. Alternatively, given the location and the size of the block this property could be the ideal development site or land bank.
