‘FOR WHOM the bell tolls’ may well be an apt description of Mayor George Seymour’s chances of retaining his Mayoralty beyond the current term.

Mayor George Seymour is highly regarded for his grassroots community involvement— handing out tickets at the Brolga, serving pies at local football games, and connecting with residents on a human level.

Despite some questions around his ability to maintain a hard edge in the demanding role of Mayor, he has navigated his position with dedication, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to his own principles.

He has selflessly devoted countless hours to various community projects, demonstrating his unwavering passion for the Fraser Coast and its residents.

However, the nearly year-long controversy surrounding the Sheraton Hervey Bay Resort development application has underscored his shortcomings in many vital areas, most notably his inability to unify stakeholders.

In stark contrast, Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott has established himself as a dynamic and forward-thinking leader, and there is no secret that he will be running for Mayor in the 2028 local government election. His candidacy for the top job is already being widely anticipated.

To provide some context, the Sheraton Hervey Bay Resort development application, by all rational assessments, should have received unanimous approval from all ten councillors and the Mayor.

The application garnered unprecedented levels of public support and opposition, with the facts clearly indicating that the formal submissions to

the council overwhelmingly favoured approval.

Two surveys conducted by the Council demonstrated significant public backing for the development, with the second survey showing a decisive 85% to 15% support margin.

The “no” campaign’s street rallies consistently drew fewer than 100 participants each time, a testament to the limited opposition.

A thorough and detailed report prepared by James Cockburn, the Executive Manager of Planning and Growth, and Gerard Carlyon, the Director of Strategy, Community and Development—professionals with a combined 40 years of experience—recommended the project’s approval with specific conditions.

Despite this, and the evident public and expert support, a faction of the council, led by Mayor Seymour, opposed the development.

This opposition appears to be driven more by personal views and political naivety, than by the public interest.

It is challenging to comprehend the audacity of Mayor George Seymour, Cr Michelle Govers, Cr Lachlan Cosgrove, Cr John Weiland, and Cr Zane O’Keefe, who seem to have disregarded the wishes of the electorate.

Mayor Seymour, a steadfast critic of the development, claimed that the project did not align with Hervey Bay’s identity, a stance seemingly at odds with the community’s overwhelming support.

The Mayor’s role is to lead the region, particularly in guiding the new councillors— three of whom voted against the development— on how to balance personal views with the collective will of the community and the advice of seasoned professionals.

Feedback has highlighted that Mayor George Seymour’s stance on the Sheraton Hervey Bay Resort development has significantly damaged his political standing. Given the profile of this decision, this misstep may prove problematic to resolve.

The live-streamed meeting and voting process did not favour him well with respect to his ability to manage his transactional and legislative language, as the outcome began to unfold in front of him.

In contrast, Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott’s clear, concise, and passionate delivery during the meeting resonated with his leadership qualities, amongst both those in attendance, and many following along online.

It was the opinion of many that Cr Truscott effectively communicated the necessity for future growth and development in Hervey Bay, balancing economic and cultural imperatives with a message that the city is open for business. His performance had a job interview feel about it, impressing observers effortlessly.

Cr Paul Truscott’s candidacy for Mayor is a lay-down misère, and I am certain his closest advisors are encouraging him to make the most of the current sentiment and ensure his intentions are promptly made public.

He will need to build a strong profile across the broader region, presenting himself as the progressive candidate capable of unifying the local community and government, if he is to be successful. A job that would take some time. Would Mayor George Seymour seek reelection under that landscape? That would be a fascinating watch.

The recent cold weather has seen an increase in rat infestation. Unfortunately, consumers reach for the easy-fix solution, that is the common poison bought off supermarket shelves.

However, these baits kill rodents effectively but also prove to be fatal to pets and wildlife that have fed on the poisoned rats.

These animals suffer horrific deaths as a consequence of pecking on or consuming poisoned rats. This occurs especially in the raptors, specifically owls.

To avoid these fatalities, consumers should be aware in purchasing baits and seek the correct advice. There are petfriendly baits available.

However, these are not found in supermarkets. They are available from rural supply stores. You need to ask specially for “pet-friendly” baits and check that the product contains the chemical Coumatetralyt.

These baits are available in sachet form and must be secured within a bait station that pets and wildlife cannot access but rodents can.

The chemical Coumatetralyt is a first-generation anticoagulant that is metabolised quickly and carries very low residual poison in the dead

rodent. As an experiment, rats poisoned by this chemical were fed to dogs with no harmless effects.

When tackling a rodent infestation, it is our responsibility to choose the correct baits that will not harm our pets and wildlife thereby preventing unnecessary suffering and death.

Everyone is talking about supermarkets and price gouging, what about our council?

They should be on top of the list, our daughter put another dwelling on our land, our intention was to subdivide and give her the land.

Due to this councils greedy and unreasonable demands we can no longer afford to go ahead with the subdivision.

We are not land developers, we have to go dual occupancy now, a week after final inspection my rates have doubled.

The council say we are a drain on the infrastructure, we paid them $18,000 for infrastructure when we applied to subdivide.

Both houses are on septic, all the second house services come of our house, ONE water metre, one garbage collection, we are getting

charged for services we haven’t got.

Nothing has changed here for three years.

Our daughter has moved out of our house into hers, if any other business did what the council do, they would end up in court.

I have been told to suck it up and pay up. They don’t care how much we have to pay out, so much for cost of living stress, but that’s our council.

Unhappy rate payer.

My name is Noela May, and as a nearly 80-year-old Great Grandma. In my earlier years I raised a family of four children and helped many others in my community. Now I’m enjoying my retirement in the peaceful suburb of Wondunna.

I write to you as I am deeply concerned about the safety of our young drivers who enjoy fast cars and engaging in activities like burnouts and donuts. While I’m certainly not opposed to this sporting activity, I do wish to make some safer suggestions to support the development and more importantly, safety, of this community and its youth. I believe it would be beneficial for our community

GREENER streets, more outdoor dining, pop-up events and prioritising pedestrians are among the key elements of a strategy to revitalise the Hervey Bay City Centre.

At its meeting this week, Fraser Coast Regional Council agreed to adopt the ‘Public Realm and Placemaking Strategy’ to guide the themes and standards for developing public places and infrastructure in the Hervey Bay City Centre.

Mayor George Seymour said the strategy detailed a range of ways to reshape the Hervey Bay City Centre streetscape to meet the needs of our changing community.

“Our aspiration is to create a series of beautiful, green, lively streets and places that reflect the city’s distinct identity and enable all users to feel welcome and comfortable in Hervey Bay’s new city centre,” he said.

“The design concepts prioritise walkability and slow vehicle speeds to create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly environment, revitalise street life, and support access to shops and businesses.”

Cr Seymour said the strategy will assist Council to prioritise projects as funding becomes available.

“Raised zebra crossings have been proposed in the short term near the Main Street/ Torquay Road roundabout with the ultimate long-term design solution to be traffic lights at this intersection to slow down cars and prioritise pedestrians,” he said.

“Another key proposal is adding a lane and covering the section of the mobility corridor that will link the new Hervey Bay Civic Centre with a new car park near the Hervey Bay PCYC. This would provide all users better, safer, well-lit, allweather access.

“Activating Freedom Park, new paving and landscape treatments, footpath dining and pop-up events with food vans are all part of the vision

to create a lively, inner-city hub with places to stop and sit, get a bite to eat and catch up with family and friends.

“The new Hervey Bay Civic Centre incorporating a new library and Council administration centre will bring hundreds of workers together in one location to provide centralised community services when it opens in mid-2026.

“The proposed public realm upgrades in conjunction with this new development will help transform the city centre into a vibrant and thriving place.”

FRASER Coast Regional Council resolved to extend the employment contract for Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ken Diehm to 30 June 2026, at which point he will retire.

Mayor George Seymour said Mr Diehm had almost 40 years’ experience in local government and had done a great job as the Fraser Coast Regional Council CEO over the past seven years.

“Ken is a highly skilled CEO who brings professionalism, enthusiasm, commitment, and experience to the work he undertakes for our community,” Cr Seymour said.

“He has dedicated his career to public service and the Fraser Coast Regional Council has been very fortunate to have him in this leadership role. He has helped to bring stability to the Council so that we can focus on serving the community.

“As Mayor, I see the commitment he brings to the role every day and the way he leads by example. I admire his professionalism; we work well together, and I am very pleased that he will continue in the role.”

Mr Diehm thanked Councillors for their support and vowed to continue to work hard to ensure the Council was delivering the services and

infrastructure the people of the Fraser Coast needed and deserved.

“I am humbled and honoured by the Council’s decision to provide a 12-month extension to my employment contract,” he said.

“I have lived and worked on the Fraser Coast for seven years, during which time my wife and I fell in love with the community.

“We purchased our family home in Hervey Bay and relocated some of our family, including four grandchildren, to the Fraser Coast.

“Council’s decision will enable me to stay involved and finalise some important

community projects such as the new Planning Scheme and the Hervey Bay Civic Centre, before retiring in Hervey Bay in 2026.

“After 40 years in local government, I am looking forward to rewarding my wife and my family for the sacrifices they have made to support my career.

“I am also excited about the opportunities to actively participate in the Fraser Coast community during my retirement.”

Council also resolved to appoint Director Strategy, Community and Development Gerard Carlyon as Deputy CEO.

HERVEY Bay residents

will be able to access fully bulk billed care with a new Medicare Urgent Care Clinic (Medicare UCC).

The Hervey Bay Medicare UCC will provide care for urgent, but not life-threatening conditions, such as a rash, infection, cut, and sprained ankle. It will be open seven days a week for extended hours with no appointment required.

In 2022–23, more than 40 per cent of presentations to Hervey Bay Hospital were for semi-urgent and non-urgent conditions. This clinic will reduce pressure on Hervey Bay Hospital and help meet the needs of the community.

The new clinic in Hervey Bay will be in addition to the state’s existing clinics in Bundaberg, Cairns South, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan (Browns Plains), Northside, Murrumba Downs, Rockhampton, South Brisbane, Toowoomba and Townsville.

More funding will also go to supporting Medicare UCCs in regional, rural and remote areas, to further support staffing across extended hours.

There have been more than 36,500 presentations to the Queensland Medicare Urgent Care Clinics.

In Queensland, 30% of all

visits so far have taken place on a weekend, and 1 in 4 after 5pm on a weekday.

Hervey Bay was selected as a location for a new Medicare UCC in consultation with the Queensland Government.

An Expression of Interest process will open shortly to identify a suitable provider for the Hervey Bay Medicare UCC. The service will be commissioned by the Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast Primary Health Network.

Assistant Minister, Emma McBride said, “The Hervey Bay Medicare Urgent Care Clinic will deliver bulk billed

urgent care for locals and reduce pressure on the Hervey Bay Hospital.”

“Since the first Medicare Urgent Care Clinic opened its doors in June last year there has been more than 500,000 visits across the country.”

Member for Hervey Bay

Adrian Tantari said, “This announcement is a game changer for free health care for the people of Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast.”

“As the fastest growing region in the Wide Bay, having seven days a week and extended hours service is exactly what the doctor ordered for our community.”

LIFE ED is set to receive more than $4,000 to support their important work, thanks to the generosity of the Hervey Bay community in this year’s Officeworks Make a Difference Appeal.

Throughout June, the Officeworks Make a Difference Appeal encouraged customers to donate at the checkout in-store or online with funds going directly to local community organisations chosen by store teams based on what felt most relevant to their local communities.

Officeworks Hervey Bay chose to raise funds for Life Ed to reach more children in rural, remote and disadvantaged communities.

Officeworks Hervey Bay’s fundraising has contributed to the total $58,000 raised for Life Ed by Officeworks stores during the appeal.

Life Ed CEO, Russell D’Costa said, “At Life Ed, we believe that every child deserves to thrive – no matter who they are, where they live or how much money they have. That’s why we partner with like minded groups and businesses, like Officeworks. Together, we can work towards a future where all children can grow in confidence through

education.”

Officeworks Hervey Bay Store Business Manager Mihai Staimberg said, “We are so proud to have raised more than $4,000 for Life Ed and thrilled to have seen our passion for the cause mirrored in our local community. Officeworks Hervey Bay is honoured to support Life Ed, helping to provide valuable resources and support to carry out their vital work. I would like to thank each and every customer who donated to this year’s Make a Difference Appeal helping to make a positive difference in the lives of Australian children.”

In total, thanks to the support and generosity of Officeworks customers and team members

nationally, the Make a Difference Appeal raised more than $830,000 to directly help 16 local community organisations whose work supports children to learn, create and connect for a more sustainable future.

Celebrating its seventh year, the Make a Difference Appeal forms part of Officeworks' People and Planet Positive Plan commitment of raising $5 million for local causes between 2020 and 2025.

Almost $6 million has been raised through the annual Make a Difference Appeal since it launched in 2018.

THE FRASER Coast has experienced significant growth in population over the past three years. Our region is more mature in its population and with this has increased chronic disease burden.

Healthcare accessibility is one concern that often brought up. Factors affecting access include:

• geographical distribution

• cost

• time

• workforce availability

The population is based in Hervey Bay and Maryborough; however, it does spread north to Burrum Heads and south past Bauple.

Residents may need to travel significant distances to access healthcare, some of which might not be available on the Fraser Coast.

This is particularly challenging for elderly residents, people with disabilities, and those without reliable transportation.

Reduce healthcare accessibility invariability increases cost to the individual, whether it be travelling expenses, lost productivity, and increased costs of access.

Similarly, we know that

that delivery of healthcare in regional areas due to reduced efficiencies are more costly.

Like across the state of Queensland, the Fraser Coast also faces a shortage of health care professionals. Recruiting and retaining doctors, nurses, and specialists can be difficult, leading to longer wait times for appointments and reduced access to certain types of care.

Hervey Bay Surgical Centre, and Ramsay Health in collaboration with primary care providers to provide a wide range of services.

Improving access to healthcare is not an easy fix, but investment into workforce, innovation and collaborative models of care are essential.

The challenges described above are not new. However, we are seeing innovative models of care to improve access and choice to residents for the Fraser Coast.

As a clinician it is refreshing to see our local services including the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service, St Stephen’s Hospital,

Expanding transport options (which includes improved flight options), increasing funding for regional health services, and enhancing telehealth capabilities can help bridge the gap in health care accessibility on the Fraser Coast.

We have seen a rise of visiting medical specialists and telehealth models such as Virtual ED and Tele-Stroke.

The Fraser Coast does have challenges, but given the growth there is an opportunity to shape healthcare for the region. This needs to ensure that there is a more equitable and accessible health care system for all.

Instantly captivated by her outgoing personality and love for drawing, he proposed that she come to a creativity workshop to see if she was interested in learning and teaching cartooning sessions to kids her own age.

Scarlet responded with a resounding “Yes!” wholeheartedly.

Scarlet, who is only 11 years old and attends Torquay State School, possesses incredible confidence.

Scarlet moved to Australia from New Zealand last year, bringing her love for art along with her.

She has been doing art her entire life and especially enjoys drawing and painting, but anything creative sparks her interest.

She has a younger brother, loves running, sports, and spending time with her family.

“Art is my favourite hobby because I can express myself and there are no boundaries,” Scarlet said.

Her passion for art is matched by her desire to share it with others.

“I want to share my passion and do art with other kids.”

Scarlet believes that art can be a powerful tool for self-expression and comfort.

“Because I struggle with anxiety, art comforts me and lets me de-stress.”

Her drive to help others find their

creative voices is evident.

“I love stepping out of my comfort zone to extend myself so I can get new experiences.”

This adventurous spirit, combined with her natural talent and empathy, makes her an ideal fit to be a Toonworld ambassador.

Scarlet ran two workshops under the guidance of Mike from Toonworld during the June school holiday with both sessions being a complete success for the young

Toonpreneur.

“She connected with the kids instantly, guiding them through the basics of cartooning with patience and enthusiasm,” said Mike.

A

innovative training program has proven to be a major step forward in Ethan Nelson’s career journey – plus, shooting a few hoops helped along the way.

Ethan is one of the latest graduates of HBNC’s Industry Ready Training (IRT) program.

The training, delivered over 10 weeks, offers jobseekers a chance to find their purpose and passion while connecting with local employers and opportunities.

Ethan, who has previous job experience in a kitchen and worked with horses while aiming to become a jockey, said the course boosted his confidence and helped him make valuable connections.

“The course helped me learn what’s out there. It brings the opportunities to you, rather you having to find what is out there,”

Ethan said.

“I was quite nervous. I didn't really know how it was going to go, or what sort of things we would do, but when I got here I got to know some of the trainers, Nicole and Kaylene.

“They're very, very good. They're really upbeat and fun and a lot of the stuff that they've done for us has been very helpful.”

Ethan said highlights of the training including completing a session at Camp Hard Yakka and hearing from facilitators visiting from various different industries.

He said the training venue, The Neighbourhood Hive, made the whole experience positive and fun.

Nicole Cornish, one of Ethan’s trainers, expressed her pride in Ethan’s progress.

“Ethan came in very shy, very quiet, a little bit unsure. Throughout the program, he really opened up to

us. He really likes our energy and the vibe of The Neighbourhood Hive,” Nicole said.

Ethan’s next step is to complete a Certificate III in Individual Support through HBNC’s Multicultural Inclusion Support Training, delivered through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) program.

Nicole said his employment future looked bright.

“Ethan will be heading over to do the SQW program for individual support and he just had a job interview, so hopefully he’ll be employed and studying, plus anything he can get involved with through HBNC in terms of youth, I believe he’d be very reliable for that, too.”

if the local council or government could allocate a piece of land on the outskirts of our city specifically for these activities. This dedicated space would not only provide a safe environment for young drivers to practice their skills but also help keep such activities off our streets. When you think about it, we already have facilities for various sports, such as cricket fields, golf courses, gun ranges, speedways, and motocross tracks. Why not extend this to include a space for car enthusiasts?

Charging a small fee for entry or membership could help cover the costs of insurance and supervision. In addition to providing a safe venue, this initiative could save lives. Those caught driving recklessly on the roads will continue to face hefty fines or have their vehicles impounded for a significant period however, these incidences may be reduced due to having a designated ‘safe space’ to utilise their skills.

Another suggestion for offenders is community service in hospitals, where they could assist car crash victims or provide comfort to families affected by such incidents. I understand this kind of reprimand goes beyond local council and I’m happy for you to put my suggestions forward to the relevant members or reference me as your voice in the community.

I am eager to hear feedback from the council and/or

community on this proposal. My heartfelt sympathies go out to those who have lost loved ones due to reckless driving. I truly believe that this initiative could greatly benefit our young drivers and enhance safety in our city.

My husband and I had need to go to the bank today regarding EOFY information.

Jaimie at the ANZ Bank was exceptionally helpful and was quite happy to spend time explaining the puzzling processes (for we elderly!!)

I then met Jessica at the NAB, who was also very helpful and happy to help in any way she could.

Don’t the hierarchy of the banks, sitting in their ivory towers in Sydney or Melbourne, realise that they have the best asset of alltheir staff. By forcing us into doing everything online, we miss that personal touch and no one will ever convince us that this is the way to go.

Thank you Jaimie and Jessica.

The developer of a worldclass resort and apartments project on the Hervey Bay waterfront has welcomed Fraser Coast Regional Council’s approval and thanked the local community for their support.

Dan Cuda, director of developer Sunny Beach Land, said the group had voluntarily

agreed to reduce the project height from 21 storeys to 18 storeys in response to community feedback.

Mr Cuda said the approval was the trigger for a major economic, employment and social boost for the Fraser Coast region.

“We thank Councillors for listening to the community, recognising the huge benefits that will flow from this project, and having the faith in us to deliver a world-class outcome for Hervey Bay,” he said.

“We also extend our deepest appreciation to Hervey Bay residents and the wider Fraser Coast community for their incredible support for a Sheraton Resort Hervey Bay.

“While we understand and appreciate that not everyone was in favour of this proposal, we are very grateful for the overwhelming feedback received and thank everyone for their interest in the project and their willingness to participate in the discussion.

ON THURSDAY, July 25th, Senator Pauline Hanson from One Nation visited Hervey Bay to support Quinn Hendry, the One Nation candidate for Hervey Bay in the upcoming state election on October 26th.

Locals had the opportunity to meet and greet Pauline at the Hervey Bay RSL Hervey House and chat with her oneon-one.

During her visit, Senator Hanson and Quinn Hendry met with small business owners in the marina precinct who are struggling with unresolved issues.

One business owner, operating in Hervey Bay for over 30 years, has been without a lease on his rented premises for over seven years due to the State government not renewing it.

“This lack of certainty affects

many hardworking small business owners, who are the backbone of the city and state,” said Quinn Hendry.

“Another significant issue in the marina is the boardwalk, which has been fenced off to residents and tourists for 14 years without a plan for repairs.”

“Local fishermen face difficulties, with green zones and red tape hindering their ability to earn a decent living.”

“Hervey Bay’s sustainable harvesters, many of whom are third and fourth-generation, see a bleak future unless changes are made.”

Senator Hanson and Quinn Hendry also met with Greg Wood, President of the River Heads Progress Association, to discuss the ongoing issue of the pontoon, which broke in

half two years ago and remains unrepaired.

“This situation poses dangers, especially in rough weather, when transporting an injured person from a boat to the pontoon, said Greg.”

“Although funds are available in the Queensland government budget, repairs are still 12 months away.”

The visit also included a stop at We Care 2, a remarkable charity organisation in Hervey Bay.

“They are making a real difference with their food van, low-cost food at their supermarket, and providing tents and sleeping bags for those in need,” said Quinn.

“Like all charities, they need more help from volunteers, so please contact them if you can offer any assistance.”

ST STEPHEN’S

Hospital General Manager Peter Wood announced a new program designed to benefit Medibank customers living in the Wide Bay region.

The Medibank No Gap joint replacement program aims to provide patients with timely access to essential joint replacement surgeries close to their homes.

Mr Wood emphasised the significance of this initiative by stating, “The Medibank No Gap joint replacement program aims to provide our patients with access to necessary surgeries close to home and with minimal wait times. This is an exciting development because it addresses a critical need for timely and accessible medical care in our community.”

to focus on their recovery without the added concern of additional costs. We are committed to helping our patients return to their daily activities as soon as possible.”

The Medibank No Gap joint replacement program is part of a broader effort to enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability.

The program is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.

By eliminating out-of-pocket expenses, patients can focus on their recovery without the added worry of additional

several benefits, including the convenience of receiving highquality medical care within the local region.

Patients no longer need to travel long distances to access specialised surgical procedures, which can be particularly challenging for those with limited mobility or other health concerns.

St Stephen’s Hospital is working closely with Medibank to ensure the program’s success and to provide the best possible care for their patients. This collaboration aims to streamline the surgical process, reduce waiting times, and ultimately improve patient

St Stephen’s Hospital is dedicated to continuously improving healthcare services for the community.

The Medibank No Gap joint replacement program is a testament to this commitment, providing patients with the support and care they need

MARK Grimsley and his wife Kelly have lived in Hervey Bay on and off for many years, this time around they have lived in Hervey Bay for eight years and love its beauty.

Born in Manchester, UK, Mark moved to Australia with his family at the age of five. He has two brothers and two sisters scattered across the country; Mark doesn’t get to see them often but keeps in touch when he can.

Now fifty-eight, Mark had a typical childhood and was passionate about soccer, which he played from age five until he became ill around 2000.

In high school, he participated in cadets for five years and knew he wanted to join the Air Force.

After school, he fulfilled this ambition, serving for a total of seventeen years.

Mark’s service included a significant deployment to Kyrgyzstan in 2002, supporting air-to-air refuelling

operations for the Afghanistan conflict.

He enjoyed his military life, working as an Aircraft Life Support Fitter, managing safety equipment for aircraft crews. Despite his love for the job, health issues forced his early departure from the military.

Mark battles PTSD and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), conditions that significantly impact his daily life. Initially misunderstood as a psychological disorder, FND is now recognised as a complex condition affecting the brain’s functionality, likened to software malfunctions.

This misunderstanding often leads to confusion in medical settings, but awareness is gradually improving.

Mark’s PTSD stems from a traumatic incident in 2002 in Afghanistan when he was stopped at a checkpoint and faced with drawn guns, an event that

still triggers him today as he didn’t think he would be coming home.

The doctors and specialist’s inability to diagnose Mark’s condition promptly added to his struggles. Initially, he concealed his symptoms until they became unmanageable.

“I recall my last day at work vividly. Feeling unwell, I drove to work but ended up driving off the road. I am not sure if I blacked out, but I was unable to function properly. This incident ultimately led to my discharge, leaving me without a clear understanding of my health issues.”

The lack of a diagnosis and the resulting isolation took a toll on Mark, both physically and financially. Kelly, his wife, has been his unwavering support, managing not only his health but also caring for their daughter, who has Asperger’s syndrome.

Living with these conditions has

been challenging. Mark experiences severe fatigue, startles easily, and often requires a wheelchair or a helmet when outside due to frequent falls. Despite these difficulties, he remains resilient, although the combination of PTSD and FND exacerbates his symptoms, including seizures and convulsions.

Post-military life saw Mark attempting to stay active by running coffee shops with Kelly, but his deteriorating health made this difficult, and they had to let the shops go.

A turning point came when he discovered a passion for photography.

Gifted a camera by his daughter Jessica, Mark began capturing wildlife, transforming his perspective, and giving him a renewed sense of purpose.

Sadly, while on the beach, he has been knocked over by off-leash dogs and subsequently had to start using a

mobility scooter. Now, he often uses a 4-wheel drive wheelchair. Additionally, he needs to go out with a support worker as he has been assaulted twice during his outings which doesn’t help his PTSD.

Mark’s photography has become a therapeutic outlet, offering him a sense of achievement and connection to the community.

He has amassed a large collection of wildlife photos over the last six years and his images are sold on Redbubble, reaching audiences worldwide.

Despite daily battles with his health, Mark remains hopeful and advocates for understanding and patience from others, emphasizing that people like him can still contribute meaningfully to society.

Loan settlement story-time!

Just last week, we met a gorgeous River Heads couple, who had big plans and a caravan in mind to match.

They approached their bank first to obtain a loan for their new caravan but found the process daunting and impersonal. Discouraged, their friend recommended Jen @ Go Further Finance to see what she could do to help. Jen listened attentively to their caravan dreams and carefully reviewed their financial situation.

With Jen’s guidance, they explored different loan products tailored to their needs and

Insights

budget. They weren’t homeowners so they look at specialized caravan finance as opposed to home equity.

After thoughtful consideration, these clients applied for a caravan loan that offered competitive rates and flexible repayment terms.

A few days later, they received the exciting news—their loan was approved! Their dream of endless travel and unforgettable experiences on the open road had become a reality.

You can keep your savings for your travels and fnance your caravan over a 3, 5 or 7 years loan term.

Spotlight! Lending policy of the fortnight

Lending policy refers to the set of guidelines, rules, and criteria that a financial institution or lender follows when determining whether to approve a loan to a borrower.

Today’s policy: Caravan loans.

Are you planning a roadtrip but you don’t want to spend your travel savings on a caravan, camper, motor home or equivalent?

Many lenders now offer a secured loan - just like a car loan -but you can use funds to buy leisure assets such as a caravan. This means you might be eligible for a lower interest rate and better repayment terms. *Lending and eligibiltiy criteria apply.

If you feel you need to take a break from everyday life, the weather is looking great or you simply just want to hit the open road, your dreams can become a reality with a caravan.

Why use a Go Further Finance broker?
