Sectional Round One By David Winters After finishing a second consecutive nearly flawless regular season, and wrapping up their second consecutive conference championship, Danville welcomed the Tiger Cubs of Greencastle to Warrior Stadium for a first-round match up of the 2021 IHSAA Sectional round of the state tournament. Weather conditions were cool and wet and thankfully the rain ceased prior to kickoff and the fans settled in nicely to watch the home team start another quest to reach Lucas Oil in November. With no disrespect to Greencastle, this game was seen as a good warm up before hitting the tougher part of the playoff run. After the defense stopped Greencastle on the opening possession, forcing a punt, the offense set the tone on their first possession…check that…senior running back
Matthew McGovern set the tone on the Warrior first possession as every play was a running play handled by the young man and capped off by a 1-yard push into the end zone to give Danville the early 7-0 lead after kicker Caleb Harvey added the extra point. On the next defensive stanza for Danville, Wyatt Gentry recovered a Greencastle fumble on their 34-yard line. Unfortunately, they would come up empty after a missed field goal gave the ball back to the Tiger Cubs deep in their own territory. However, the Warrior defense stepped up and forced a punt from deep in their end zone. It looked as though the punt was partially blocked and as a result, Danville had the ball at the Tiger Cub 18-yard line. A few plays later, Andrew Poppa ran it in from five yards out and the Harvey PAT gave Danville a 14-0 lead with just over 4 minutes left in the first quarter. Danville would once again stop the Greencastle offense and get the ball back at their own 36-yard line. Quarterback Kale Payne wasted no time to add to the early lead when he connected with Brayton McMahon for a 64-yard completion with 53 seconds still remaining in the first. The Warriors led 21-0. The pace of the game would not change as Danville controlled both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The Warriors would eventually take a 41-0 lead before Greencastle quarterback Keifer Wilson completed a 26-yard pass to Connor George to get the Tiger Cubs on the board. In the end, it was not enough and Danville won this one quite easily by a final score of 41-7. Payne finished the game 11-18 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. McGovern had his best game rushing the ball 16 times for 180 yards and three touchdowns. Next up for the Warriors is a road trip to face Indiana Creek, who defeated Indianapolis-Washington High School 36-18 in their first-round game.
Jenna Pike: Pursuing An Equestrian Life
By: Olivia O’Neal Jenna Pike, a sophomore at Danville Community High School, has already paved a path for her future in equestrian sports at the young age of 16. Being a horse trainer, giving lessons, and involvement in equine therapy are just some examples of her devotion to a life of bridles and saddles. Since she was six, with the introduction of horselife by her mother, Pike has been involved in just about every equine competition imaginable.
Ten years of riding English, Western, Jumping, Contesting, and Side Saddle combined with Halter and Showmanship competitions have led to plenty of awards “all around the state,” most commonly the Hendricks County fairgrounds and Bainbridge. These include High Point awards for English and Western patterns; Grand and Reserve Champion bags for Halter and English riding; belt buckles for Western High Point riding; many 1st place ribbons; and a surplus of Grand and Reserve Champion banners at a variety of different fair events. Pike’s favorites are her 4H Banners. “I was told when I was young that my horse would never be good enough,” she explained, “so the banners make me think of all [my] accomplishments.” And she doesn’t find a single moment a waste: “My overall relationship with horses is the best. [Around them] I feel so relaxed and can act myself.
