Warriors Score Win in Sectional Match Up

Sectional Round One

By David Winters

After finishing a second consecutive nearly flawless regular season, and wrapping up their second consecutive conference championship, Danville welcomed the Tiger Cubs of Greencastle to Warrior Stadium for a first-round match up of the 2021 IHSAA Sectional round of the state tournament.

Weather conditions were cool and wet and thankfully the rain ceased prior to kickoff and the fans settled in nicely to watch the home team start another quest to reach Lucas Oil in November. With no disrespect to Greencastle, this game was seen as a good warm up before hitting the tougher part of the playoff run.

After the defense stopped Greencastle on the opening possession, forcing a punt, the offense set the tone on their first possession…check that…senior running back Matthew McGovern set the tone on the Warrior first possession as every play was a running play handled by the young man and capped off by a 1-yard push into the end zone to give Danville the early 7-0 lead after kicker Caleb Harvey added the extra point.

On the next defensive stanza for Danville, Wyatt Gentry recovered a Greencastle fumble on their 34-yard line. Unfortunately, they would come up empty after a missed field goal gave the ball back to the Tiger Cubs deep in their own territory. However, the Warrior defense stepped up and forced a punt from deep in their end zone. It looked as though the punt was partially blocked and as a result, Danville had the ball at the Tiger Cub 18-yard line. A few plays later, Andrew Poppa ran it in from five yards out and the Harvey PAT gave Danville a 14-0 lead with just over 4 minutes left in the first quarter.

Danville would once again stop the Greencastle offense and get the ball back at their own 36-yard line. Quarterback Kale Payne wasted no time to add to the early lead when he connected with Brayton McMahon for a 64-yard completion with 53 seconds still remaining in the first. The Warriors led 21-0.

The pace of the game would not change as Danville controlled both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The Warriors would eventually take a 41-0 lead before Greencastle quarterback Keifer Wilson completed a 26-yard pass to Connor George to get the Tiger Cubs on the board. In the end, it was not enough and Danville won this one quite easily by a final score of 41-7.

Payne finished the game 11-18 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. McGovern had his best game rushing the ball 16 times for 180 yards and three touchdowns.

Next up for the Warriors is a road trip to face Indiana Creek, who defeated Indianapolis-Washington High School 36-18 in their first-round game.

Jenna Pike: Pursuing An Equestrian Life

By: Olivia O’Neal

Jenna Pike, a sophomore at Danville Community High School, has already paved a path for her future in equestrian sports at the young age of 16.

Being a horse trainer, giving lessons, and involvement in equine therapy are just some examples of her devotion to a life of bridles and saddles.

Since she was six, with the introduction of horselife by her mother, Pike has been involved in just about every equine competition imaginable.

Ten years of riding English, Western, Jumping, Contesting, and Side Saddle combined with Halter and Showmanship competitions have led to plenty of awards “all around the state,” most commonly the Hendricks County fairgrounds and Bainbridge.

These include High Point awards for English and Western patterns; Grand and Reserve Champion bags for Halter and English riding; belt buckles for Western High Point riding; many 1st place ribbons; and a surplus of Grand and Reserve Champion banners at a variety of different fair events. Pike’s favorites are her 4H Banners.

“I was told when I was young that my horse would never be good enough,” she explained, “so the banners make me think of all [my] accomplishments.”

And she doesn’t find a single moment a waste: “My overall relationship with horses is the best. [Around them] I feel so relaxed and can act myself.

Horses are my stress reliever… Having them is a great thing to come by… Every horse person will tell you: you will make so many new friends and have the best friendship with your horse. [My horse and I] do everything together.”

Pike’s next competition will be an all around show in Bainbridge where she will be doing just about every event. She feels positive about her chances, stating, “I think we’ll have an amazing outcome.”

Funniest 3rd Grade Winner Spooky Basement By Amber Muncy

One dark and stormy Halloween night, I could no longer ignore the strange sound coming from the basement door.

So I got my Nerf gun from under my bed and a flashlight. I closed my eyes, opened the door, and screamed when I shot my Nerf gun. My parents came running down the stairs and I told them the story that I was afraid of my dog because I thought he was making the noises. They said we don’t have a dog. Ahhhhhhhh! So me and my parents decided to go down to the basement to investigate. We grabbed two more Nerf guns, one for my mom and one for my dad. We tiptoed down the stairs and once we got to the bottom we stopped because we heard the noise again. So I hid behind my parents. We found something sleeping on the couch and we shot our Nerf guns. Then my dad turned on the lights and we saw…my grandpa on the couch with Nerf bullets stuck all over his face and one on his hands. He was still sleeping and snoring. I said “Wait, was that the noise we heard?” Dad said “I guess.” Grandpa sneezed and the Nerf gun flew out and hit mom in the face. She said “Eww gross! Grandpa snot.” After mom cleaned herself up we went back to bed and I no longer heard the noise again.

One dark and stormy Halloween night, I could no longer ignore the strange sound coming from my basement door.

I heard it in my bedroom. Even under the covers, I could still hear the sound. I didn’t want to be alone so I ran to my parent’s room. They have lots of kids. They are very tired. They would not wake. So I tried my big sister. She is a teenager. SHE would not wake up. My last choice was my little sisters. They would be useless but I took one so I wouldn’t be alone. Since there was two of us, I knew we were going to need supplies. For the supplies, I grabbed a flashlight, a mini baseball bat and my fastest running shoes just in case. I dragged my sister to the front door of the basement door. AS I opened the door, the sounds became clearer. I heard hissing. I heard growling. Then I heard something that said, “mama”. When I got to the bottom of the steps I tried to turn on the light switch. It didn’t work so I turned on my flashlight. When I did, I saw big green eyes staring at me. I ran screaming up the stairs. As caught my breath, I come back down the stairs to see what that was. With my flashlight I crept very slowly to the green eyes. When my flashlight shined on it I saw a black tail swish by. I screamed. It meows….wait...it meows? Monsters don’t meow! I turned the flash light on it again. There in an old box of baby toys sat our cat, but it sprang at me and scared me half to death. They say curiosity killed the cat but that cat almost killed me. Hopefully it will never happen again.

Most Creative- 3rd Grade Winner The Monster Baby By Zoey Snider

One dark and stormy Halloween night, I could no longer ignore the strange sound coming from the basement door.

I went to the basement door and didn’t know if I should open it or not. I was shaking!!! My fingers were tingling!!! But, I peeked inside and was SHOCKED from what I saw. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at. It had two cute little blue eyes, orange and yellow horns, blue fur, and yellow paws. It was floating in the air behind three stacks of cardboard boxes. When I saw it, it was eating our cherries and mangoes. I went slowly towards it with my knees shaking. Want to know why I was going towards it? Because I wanted to get a closer look at what it was. While I was going towards it, it looked like a baby monster to me. I ran back upstairs to tell my mom, but she didn’t believe me. All she said was, “There is no such thing as baby monsters.” I knew that I had to find the baby monster’s family on my own. The best idea (my only idea) that I had was to take the baby monster trick-or-treating tonight. Really, we were trick-or-treating for monster parents not tricks or candy. We went to every house except we had two left. So far no luck on finding monster parents. The next house that we went to, there was no one home. Now I had one house left. What should I do if this last house doesn’t belong to the baby monster? Where will I find its parents? I really had my hopes up that this house was the baby monster’s house. I was super scared to knock, but did it anyway. A young human couple answered the door. The young couple said, “We are not trick-or-treating or giving out candy this year because we are trying to find out baby.” I showed them the baby monster that I had in my hands and they looked so happy after I showed them. I didn’t know why they were so happy because the baby is a monster and they were humans. I asked them why they were so happy. They ripped off their human costumes and said, “When I thought this was going to be the worst Halloween night ever, you brought me my baby. Which is the best treat on the Halloween block!”

Funniest 4th Grade Winner That Night By Kyndall Dostin

One dark and stormy Halloween night, I could no longer ignore the strange sound coming from the basement door.

I was laying in my bed deciding if I wanted to go down there. After about 5 minutes I decided I was going to go down there. I got out of my bed and opened my bedroom door and went right to the basement but just by the door. I started to hear what kind of sounded like light footsteps down there which made me not want to go. I was so scared to but I opened the door. I went down there and there was nothing but then I remembered there was a closet! In the closet it was empty so someone could easily fit in the closet which made me super scared to open it but I built up the courage and opened the closet. I opened it really slowly just in case something did pop up and scare me. I looked and there was nothing. But then I hear more light and quiet footsteps. I look behind me and AHHHHHH- HHH!!!! THERE IS A CLOWN!!!!! But wait the clown starts laughing, and takes off his mask. I am FREAKED out. I am biting my nails and fidgeting around so much! And when he takes off his mask, it is my dad! Seriously, my dad. I got so mad at my dad I just ran back upstairs. I probably didn’t talk to him for the rest of the night. UGH dads these days! THE END!!

Spookiest 4th Grade Winner THE NOISE By Lyla Nichols

One dark and stormy Halloween night, I could no longer ignore the strange sound coming from the basement door.

So I did the unthinkable and I went down into the basement. Usually me and my brother aren’t allowed to go in the basement but, this was IMPORTANT! And guess what happens next...NOTHING! And then, MY BROTH- ER jumped out at me in the CLOWN COSTUME that I HATE! I was so terrified I jerked back! He started dying of laughter, I couldn’t believe him I was so mad at him! Then I said “you better NOT do this at my sleepover tomorrow, you know how my friends are going to react.” “Yes, yes, I know, Keelie, you told me a million times,” said my brother. The next day Lisa + Sarah came at 9:00 sharp just like what Keelie said. “Perfect!” Keelie said with excitement. Then, at 10:00 they got ready for bed. And at 11:00 Keelie + her friends heard the noise AGAIN! And Lisa + Sarah were getting scared. But I just said ,“It is just my brother.” But just then my BROTHER came RUNNING, into my room! I let out the biggest, the loudest scream I have ever done. “AAAAHHH,” I screeched in terror. Then I said “We have to go see what it was.” And Lisa + Sarah said with their loudest voice “NO! We are LEAVING,” but when they tried, the doors were ALL locked!

And I finally convinced them to go into the basement with me + my brother, too. And when we went into the basement we saw nothing! But just then when we were just about to leave, ALL the doors locked to get into the living room from the basement. And THEN, something tapped my shoulder AND IT WAS...to be continued.

Most Creative 4th Grade Winner The NOISE By: Ryan Roberts

One dark and stormy Halloween night, I could no longer ignore the strange sound coming from the basement door.

My mom asked me to go check what it was. I said “It’s probably a rat.” “That’s the PROBLEM,” Mom shouted so I got a broom from the closet. I opened the basement door “come on mousey mousey” I said in a soft voice. The noise got louder like footsteps, step Step STep STEP a white figure ran past the end of the stairs. I shivered. I saw drops of red on the ground. The footsteps got faster step step step, there’s a corner you turn right before I pass it a white head peaked out red eyes stared into my soul I screamed EEEEEH. My mother didn’t come. I ran back up the stairs and didn’t look back. “Mom, MOM, there’s some white monster in the basement,” I said out of breath. My mom said, “NO WAY.” “ YES WAY, GO LOOK.” “Ok,” Mom said. She opened the door and it was crawling up the stairs! Mom screamed like a girl, “EEEEEEEEEE!” It had what looked like blood on its fingers. Mom went back upstairs and grabbed Dad’s flare gun and opened back up the door. She shot a flare and slammed the door BAM smoke seeps through the door. After a minute we checked the rest of the basement. There was a note on the ground I picked it up it said “I’LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR.” written in sloped writing. Okay, that’s the END.
