Have You Planned for Your Estate?
When it comes to estate planning, there are a variety of challenges. Luckily, there are also many reliable, time-tested planning approaches that are both effective and economical. The first and most central component is a will, but it is also important to separately consider assets that pass directly to named beneficiaries, such as retirement plans, jointly - owned property, or life insurance. Estate planning is not just about what you pass on, but to whom—family members, friends and loved ones, and often meaningful charities. In fact, creating a charitable legacy can be a positive and integral part of estate planning. Some assets pass through probate before they are distributed to heirs, while others bypass the court process and go directly to beneficiaries. Examples of assets that do not go through probate might include jointly - owned assets (your home or bank accounts), retirement plans, or life insurance that specify a beneficiary. A good estate plan coordinates the disposition of all assets. A good step-by-step plan starts with clearly determining your objectives. Do you want to provide security for your spouse, leave money for your children or grandchildren, or leave a charitable legacy? The second step would be to make an inventory of your assets. Once you have these two steps complete, you can begin effective planning. An attorney or other professional advisor is recommended as the next step, since you will want to draft a will, but may also want to consider revocable or irrevocable trusts, lifetime gifts, and other ways to realize your goals. Effective estate planning takes time and effort, but the rewards more than justify the costs.
