CHILDREN HAD A VERY SPECIAL ROLE IN THOSE SOTOGRANDE, WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THOSE CHILDHOOD SUMMERS? DAYS IN
Sotogrande was, is and always will be an urbanisation for children. I have never seen any other place where the little ones can be so at ease. We had a great time. And nothing bad ever happened, it was fantastic. The summers were a lot of fun. We played a lot of sport, we took part in the gymkhanas, which were outstanding, but they stopped when the urbanisation grew, as they were impossible to organise for so many people. Then there was the Garrigues Theatre. I didn’t take part, as it wasn’t my generation, but I did go and see it. The ode was very famous and created a lot of controversy, it gave us a lot to talk about, it was superb! Maybe when we became teenagers, youths, Sotogrande became a little boring. Some even called it ‘tostongrande’ (the big bore). But, well, then they came to live here as adults!
beautiful light…The sunset is wonderful here, when the afternoon is drawing to an end and the night air comes after a hot day, the light is amazing. My Basque grandmother, Eulate, always said that the light in Sotogrande was unique, blue, incredible…
IN THE SOTOGRANDE HISTORICAL ARCHIVE, THERE ARE MANY PHOTOS FROM THOSE YEARS. YOUR FATHER OFTEN WORE SOME LOVELY BOOTS, WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? I still have them. My father bought them on a trip to Mexico. He ordered some Texan boots to be made with his iron. He then had several of the same pairs made, but I still have the originals.
I can’t use them as the boots are made stronger nowadays, but I take great care of them, they are in pristine condition.
YOU HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY IN SOTOGRANDE,
WHAT DO YOU HOPE FROM THE UPCOMING YEARS?
My dream is to leave another generation of polo players. In my time, after finishing my degree course, I wanted to devote myself to polo, and I did so, but I would love to have started earlier, because they have undoubtedly been the happiest years of my life. The time I spent playing with my father is a treasure that I hold in my heart. I am delighted I am now sharing this sport, this passion, with my son.n
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE? In those days, I loved Castellar in the afternoons at sunset. We used to go in Tamy’s van, with a load of beers and we had a lot of fun.
