Be part of the solution, not the pollution This month University Housing is partnering with the Center for Sustainability to create sustainable initiatives in honor of Earth Day. Each hall is taking steps to encourage recycling, water reduction and other environmentally-friendly behaviors to help reduce our impact on the planet! Georgia Southern University strives to reduce the impact we make on the environment in every way possible. While reading this issue, think of steps you can help us with our sustainable goals as you take a walk on the nature trail or help out in our community garden.

Recycled Boat Regatta

No Impact Week April 7-14th

By: Michaela Simpson, GA Curriculum & Assessment

During No Impact Week, there will be events and programs going on all across campus and in your residence halls that will help you consider your carbon footprint. The Center for Sustainability will be hosting several events that serve to reduce the impact Georgia Southern University makes on the environment. As part of this week, you can learn about how to reduce your impact through a variety of fun, engaging programs! One of my favorites is the Recycled Boat Regatta, where teams build boats out of recyclable materials and attempt to cross the lake in front of the Nursing & Education Buildings in it. There are tons of different awards to win at this event, and an opportunity to do something that you’ll surely remember forever! Back to Table of Contents

4/10: Build a boat from recycled materials and race it across the Education/Nursing Pond. This year, we’ll have food trucks and a DJ at the event. If you don’t want to enter, come cheer on your favorites! Find more information here. Register a team here.

Unplug & Reboot 4/11: Come out to Sweetheart Circle 8 - 10 p.m. to Unplug and Reboot – power down and reconnect with friends for this energy-free evening!

Steps to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Individual sustainability may seem overwhelming, especially when you can’t afford most of the high tech gadgets. However, it’s much easier to make the switch when you make tiny steps toward a larger goal within your own life or your suite. Here some ways you can reduce your carbon footprint: ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Bike to class and around town for some clean exercise Bring recyclable bags to the grocery store Carpool places (grocery store, restaurants, etc) Use LED light bulbs in your room for increased efficiency Recycle throughout campus and in your halls Watch your water waste with a leaky faucet Turn off lights when you leave the room

Green Living at Georgia Southern Georgia Southern’s Center for Sustainability is funded primarily by a $10 student sustainability fee on the Statesboro Campus and hosts a variety of programs and events throughout the year. Our primary mission is to increase education and engagement in sustainability issues both on campus and in the community. We want to make sure that students know about Georgia Southern’s “True Blue and Green Too” culture of sustainability right from the start, so we encourage you to get involved in big and small ways this spring! To the right are a few ways to get involved!

Finishing the Semester Strong Harvey Moody Resident Advisor Year: Junior Major: Public Relations

I don’t know about you, but for me, fall semester is a breeze. I blink, and it’s over, and then I’m enjoying Christmas break at home. In the fall semester, I am on top of my game and I may even turn in a few assignments early. However, spring semester is a whole different story. Spring semester seems to drag along, and by spring break, I am barely making it to the finish line. It may seem like I am exaggerating, but any of my friends will tell you that I am up later than usual trying to get things done during the spring. This is primarily because motivation is down and I’m in need of a pick-me-up. There are a few tips that get me through my ‘hard times’ during the semester. The first tip is to talk to someone who cares and can help you during those times of low motivation. Call your parents! I personally talk to my parents once (sometimes twice) a day. I know that may be a lot for some people, but talking to my parents who have already gone through what I’m currently going through really helps me. When you talk with someone else (like your friends, grandparents, or mentors), you are able to gain perspective and find solutions instead of worrying about it in your own head. Back to Table Of Contents

My second tip is to rest when you can. Hopefully, during spring break you got some much needed rest, and you are begrudgingly ready for the final half of the semester. It’s okay to take a mental health day or say “no” to extra tasks right now. My final tip is to ask for help! One of my main mistakes my freshman year was not asking for help, and I’m currently still paying for it. Back when I still took math classes, I would sit in the class and pretend like I knew what I was doing when I really should’ve been asking for help in order to really understand the material. It is important to understand what you’re learning so you can apply it in future classes. There is a tremendous amount of resources on our campus. We have the Academic Success Center and of course our professors. On the specifically the Statesboro Campus, we have the math ER and weekly tutoring happening in your halls every Sunday from 7-9 p.m. Everyone struggles, but don’t let it stop you from finishing strong!

The Stress of Changing Majors By: Harvey Moody, Resident Advisor, Junior, Major: Public Relations When I first started at Georgia Southern, I was an information technology major with a minor in public relations. I chose IT because I was very interested in computers and website design in middle school and I was pretty good at it. I chose to minor in public relations because I did two years of yearbook in high school and really enjoyed doing the marketing and communications side of yearbook. I remember telling my mom several times about a new career I’d chosen for myself, and she would often say that I would most likely change my mind later on down the road. For some reason, I would always get upset at that. It made me think that I couldn’t commit to something and I just knew that I wanted to do whatever I told her I wanted to it. As per usual, my mom was right, and I officially changed my major spring semester of my freshman year. The change happened when I took a class I needed for IT called discrete math. It was literally the hardest class I’ve ever taken at Georgia Southern and I still have nightmares about it. When I was in the class, I had no motivation to pay attention or learn the material. I thought about why that was and also noticed that I was bored in my other IT classes. It was then I noticed that it was probably in my best interest to try something new and I switched my major to public relations with a minor in information technology (which, I later dropped, but that’s another story), and I’ve been happier ever since. The important thing to remember is that it is okay to take your time and figure out what you want to study while you’re here. About 50-70% of students will change their majors during their time in college. It is completely okay to choose the classes that spark your passion or progress you toward your career goal. If your classes do not interest you, it may be time to take a visit to your academic advisor or Career Services to find something that will interest you. Talk with your new advisor as well about best classes to take to ease yourself into the transition.

Have you considered being a Peer Mentor for the Honors LLC for 2019-2020? Ask your RA, Peer Mentor, or RD for more information! We are still seeking applicants! Maya Angelou once said, "A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again." That great soul, ladies and gentlemen, comes in the form of Will Thomas Hodges. He is compassionate. He is kind. He is a wonderful person. If anyone needs help, he is always someone you can count on to reach out first and offer his help. He cares about people and has played a vital role in the Honors Community by building a platform in which people are brought together and great relationships are formed. Taking inspiration from Maya Angelou, I think it is safe to say that Will is simply a great soul!

May is almost here BUT you have plenty of time to get involved, get caught up in class and so much more. Time is of the essence and how you use it will make the ultimate difference. Plan ahead and sometimes you may have to say no to going out to spend more time in the books or for self-care. Enjoy the last few weeks of your spring semester!

Senior Desk Assistant Eman Woods Hometown: Crofton, MD Major: Civil Engineering I enjoy working in housing because of the work environment. All of the staff members interact as if they are family with one another. I love when tours will come through and both the parents and the students look at the rooms in awe as they are much better than " what they had when they were in college". Then I make general conversation with them as if we were friends. It's honestly a very welcoming job.

A general rule is that if the noise is audible one door away from the source or if a roommate or neighbor is impacted by the amount of noise, it is too loud. If a neighbor’s noise is bothering you, tactfully ask the person to keep their noise down. If the noise persists, you can search out a staff member for assistance. Quiet hours begin every day at 10:00 p.m. and continue until 10:00 a.m. the following morning. All other times are considered “courtesy hours” and a resident’s right to request a quiet environment should be honored at all times. During final exams, quiet hours will be extended to 24 hours a day. Click here to access the full community guide.

I enjoy being in the lab because of the many opportunities that it has given me. For me personally, through my time in the Lab I was able to join the RHA executive board and be apart of undergraduate research in my first year as a college student! A lot of what I’ve been able to accomplish in my short time at GSU started within the Lab and I cannot wait to see how my experience in the Lab LLC propels me in my future. ● ● ● ● ● ●

We are nearing the end of the semester, and that means closing will be here before we know it. As a reminder, each resident is jointly responsible for the cleanliness and condition of the common areas in a unit upon leaving. We do not have the capacity to track who leaves when or who actually cleaned what. Therefore, all common area charges will be split among all occupants of the space unless someone takes full responsibility through a common area damage claim form that can be picked up at the front desk. We encourage you to sit down with your roommates now and create a plan for closing and cleaning tasks. Who is responsible for cleaning which areas? Who will depart last? The last person to leave will be responsible for making sure all areas are cleaned and in good condition prior to departure. Let your RA or RD know if you have any questions. Set up your assignment deadlines early using Google Calendar or other reminder apps. Manage your time and energy effectively so you will have more free time to relax and enjoy exploring more opportunities at Georgia Southern (get a job, join a club, exercise, try new things, etc.).
