text Federica Repetto What’s it like living in Venice, Milan and Paris?

I was born and raised in Venice, yet it never ceases to amaze me. Paris is the city that never sleeps, with a vibrant cultural life. And Milan is at centre stage these days with the Expo.

Your work with the Parisian auction house Artcurial has included meeting famous artists.

Quite frequently. Fabrizio Plessi, also Venetian and the artist I wrote my thesis on years ago, is one artist I am always enthusiastic about.

What are you currently working on?

At Artcurial’s Milan office, the first French auction house I opened in Italy, I recently inaugurated “Autopsie”, a sort of “expo in reverse” seen through the trash of famous people.

You also host interesting exhibitions at your family residence, Palazzo Nani Bernardo.

For the Biennale in Venice I organise exhibits of young, not yet well-known artists. For example, Joana Vasconcelos, Cyprian Gaillard, Marco Nereo Rotelli, Laurent Grasso.

How would you describe Venice?

Magnificent for its magical mix of timeless beauty and artistic contemporaneity.

Come è vivere tra Venezia, Milano e Parigi?

Venezia è la città dove sono nata e cresciuta non smette mai di sorprendermi. Parigi è la città che non dorme mai con una vita culturale attivissima. E, Milano al centro dell’attualità con l’Expo.

Grazie alla sua attività presso la casa d’aste parigina Artcurial ha modo di conoscere anche artisti di fama.

Mi capita molto spesso. Fabrizio Plessi, veneziano come me ed artista sul quale ho scritto la mia tesi anni fa, è quello che mi ha da sempre più emozionato.

Su quale progetto è attualmente impegnata?

Nella sede milanese di Artcurial, la prima casa d’aste francese di cui ho aperto una sede in Italia, ho inaugurato da poco “Autopsie”, una sorta di “expo al contrario” vista attraverso i rifiuti di personaggi famosi.

A Palazzo Nani Bernardo, dimora di famiglia, ospita anche interessanti esposizioni.

In occasione della Biennale di Arte Contemporanea organizzo delle esposizioni di giovani artisti o non ancora molto conosciuti. E’ il caso, ad esempio, di Joana Vasconcelos, Cyprian Gaillard, Marco Nereo Rotelli, Laurent Grasso.

Come dovrebbe essere la sua Venezia?

Magnifica per il suo magico mix fra la sua bellezza senza tempo e la contemporaneità artistica attuale.

text Federica Repetto Is Venice a source of inspiration for you?

It is the real protagonist of my “Crimes in the Lagoon” stories (published by Piazza): a real, living, everyday city. Its topography, its maze of old streets and bell towers and its buildings are the ideal setting for mysterious stories full of suspense.

There is something about your style that intrigues and captivates the reader.

The reader must be caught up in the various scenarios, be captivated by the plot and follow through to the final coup de scene, that I have always tried to make as efficient as possible.

What does it mean to be a writer of noirs?

For me it means writing fluidly, without being boring but not too psychological either. Above all it must capture the reader’s attention without being banal or obvious.

What noir-style Venetian itinerary would you recommend?

Since I love the hidden Venice, I set my next novel, entitled “The Venetian Affair”, due out in a few months, in Santa Marta and some places on the island of Giudecca, like Sacca Fisola.

Your idea of Venice.

Unfortunately, I’m very nostalgic and, if I could, I would like to go back to teh Venice of my childhood. That of its natural inhabitants, with fewer tourists and boats. However, in my opinion, the Venice of today is becoming ever more distorted by modernity.

Venezia è per lei fonte di ispirazione?

E’ la vera protagonista dei miei racconti “Crimini in laguna” (Piazza Editore), città viva, reale, quotidiana.

La sua topografia, il suo dedalo di calli e campielli e i suoi palazzi sono l’ideale per raccontare storie misteriose e di suspense.

C’è qualcosa nel suo stile che emoziona ed intriga...

Chi legge deve entrare nelle varie ambientazioni, farsi coinvolgere dalla trama e stare al gioco del colpo di scena finale, che ho sempre cercato di rendere in modo efficace.

Cosa significa essere uno scrittore del noir?

Per me significa essere scorrevole nella scrittura, non noioso, nemmeno troppo psicologico. Conta soprattutto essere avvincente, mai banale o scontato.

Quale itinerario veneziano, in stile noir, vorrebbe consigliarci?

Poiché amo la Venezia minore, ho ambientato parte del mio prossimo romanzo dal titolo “Intrigo veneziano”, che uscirà tra qualche mese, tra Santa Marta, e alcuni luoghi dell’isola della Giudecca, come Sacca Fisola.

La sua idea di Venezia Purtroppo sono un nostalgico e, se potessi, vorrei ritornare alla Venezia di quando ero ragazzino.

Quella dei suoi naturali abitanti, meno affollata di turisti e di mezzi acquei. Invece vedo la Venezia di oggi sempre più stravolta dalla modernità.

It is a Venice that communicates to all five senses but in specific hidden corners.

The smiles of craftsmen who work to pass their knowledge onto future generations, the smells of the traditional desserts that waft out from the patisseries, the lapping of the water while you are sitting drinking a coffee in a bar on a fondamenta, the tactile experience of touching pearls, silks and leathers that are transformed into glamorous objects.

What would you recommend to a tourist who is visiting the city for the first time?

To explore enthusiastically to discover the real fabric of the city, asking for the advice of Venetians who are willing to tell them about their own Venice.

My Pretty Venice, that you wrote with Isabella and Beatrice Campagnol, is becoming much sought after!

People like the guide because it provides a real key for understanding a genuine and elegant Venice, of everyday experiences, made of people, shops and activities that pulsate with life.

What projects do you have in the pipeline?

A communication and branding project for a pool of architects who make extremely energy efficient buildings all over the world.

How do you imagine your ideal Venice?

Quale la Venezia vera delle Veneziane?

E’ una Venezia che parla a tutti i cinque sensi ma in precisi angoli nascosti. I sorrisi delle artigiane che lavorano per mantenere vivo il sapere trasmesso da generazioni, i profumi dei dolti tipici che escono dalle pasticcerie, lo sciabordio dell’acqua mentre sei seduta a bere un caffè ad un bar su una fondamenta, l’esperienza tattile di toccare perle, velluti, seti e pelli che vengono trasformati in oggetti glam.

Cosa consiglierebbe di fare ad un turista che per la prima volta arriva in città?

Di avventurarsi con entusiasmo alla scoperta del vero tessuto della città, chiedendo consiglio ai veneziani che saranno disponibili a raccontare la propria Venezia.

My Pretty Venice, che ha scritto con Isabella e Beatrice Campagnol, sta diventanto un oggetto del desiderio!

La guida piace perchè offre la vera chiave di lettura di una Venezia genuina e raffinata, da vivere tutti i giorni, fatta di persone, botteghe e di attività che pulsano di vita.

Progetti in cantiere?

Un progetto di comunicazione e di branding per un pool di architetti che realizzano a livello mondiale edifici a bassissimo impatto energetico.

There is no greater joy than meeting guests who create unique drinks with me based on the moment and the situation. I like that there are still people who love my Bellinis, prepared with fresh peaches, like the classic cocktails and the new creations.

Your favourite recipe.

The recent Baron Gin&Tonic. I like to personalise Gin&Tonics with botanical perfumes.

Your most famous cocktails?

The Buona Notte, the Nina’s Special and the Goodnight Amigos made and prepared for (and with!) George Clooney.

What is the most creative cocktail you have ever made?

I was inspired by a glass work of art, an hourglass-shaped tumbler that contains the sands from the most beautiful islands in the world, to create the amazing “Amore senza tempo”.

The secret of your profession.

Each one of us has their own ambitions.

The important thing is to communicate them through creativity and hospitality. For me, understanding the mood of the client is essential because it allows me to win them over with my cocktails.

A comment on Venice.

It is a city where you will never feel alone. Its beauty is incomparable and even after 35 years it never stops astonishing me.

Non c’è gioia più grande di incontrare ospiti che creano con me, a seconda del momento e della situazione, drink unici.

Mi piace sapere che c’è ancora chi ama i miei Bellini, preparati con pesche freshe, come i cocktail classici e le nuove creazioni.

La sua ricetta preferita Il recentissimo Baron Gin&Tonic. Mi piace personalizzare il Gin&Tonic con i profumi della botanica.

I suoi cocktail più famosi?

Il Buona Notte , il Nina’s Special e il Goodnight Amigos realizzati e preparati per George Clooney. ( e con george!;) Qual è il cocktail più creativo che ha realizzato nella sua carriera?

Mi sono ispirato ad una opera in vetro, un bicchiere a forma di clessidra che contiene la sabbia delle più belle isole del mondo, per stupire con “Amore senza tempo”.

Il segreto del suo mestiere Ognuno di noi ha le proprie ambizioni, importante è saperle comunicare attraverso la creatività e l’ospitalità. Per me è essenziale capire lo stato d’animo del cliente che mi permette di conquistarlo con i miei migliori cocktail.

Un commento su Venezia E’ una città che non ti fa sentire mai solo.

La sua bellezza è indiscutibile e anche dopo 35 anni non smette mai di sorprendermi.

June - August Open to the public until Sunday, November 22 at the Biennale Gardens and the central pavilion of the Arsenal, the 56th International Art Exhibition, titled All the World’s Futures and directed by Okwui Enwezor, features 136 artists from 53 countries, of which 89 are presented for the first time.

At the Correr Museum, New Objectivity: Modern German Art in the Weimar Republic, 1919–1933, on until August 30, is the first comprehensive exhibit in Italy and the United States to examine the themes of the Weimar Republic’s leading artistic trends. Two important shows are taking place

at the Ca’ Pesaro: Cagnaccio di San Pietro and Cy Twombly. The Cagnaccio show is comprised of a selection of this nonconformist artist’s masterpieces, illustrating the shy yet passionate maestro’s thematic range (until September 27). Cy Twombly. Paradise is an initiation-like exploration of sixty years’ worth of painter and sculptor Twombly’s artistic production and untiring creativity; and in Venice the mysteries and revelations of Twombly’s art will attain a new perspective (until September 13).

Two new shows are on at Venice’s Pineault Foundation: Palazzo Grassi presents the first retrospective of Martial Raysse outside of France; while Slip of the Tongue is being hosted by Punta della Dogana. The Guggenheim Foundation is organising

Face to face with Michael Caine, the symbol of British cinema, the star of the latest film by Sorrentino A tu per tu con Michael Caine, volto per eccellenza del cinema britannico, protagonista del nuovo film di Sorrentino Michael Caine has returned to Cannes after half a century. The last time he was here was in 1966, the year he starred in Alfie.

‘The film took the Grand Jury Prize, yet I didn’t win anything.

So I thought: well, I came all this way for nothing! I won’t be back here any time soon…’

It took fifty years for the annoyance to pass. And for the second time, Cannes has got the better of him. Again no award, which he would have deserved for his role, one full of disenchantment, bitterness, cynicism, regret, irony. In a hotel-spa set in the Alps, Caine plays a composer who no longer wants to direct an orchestra, not even for the queen of England. But he then finds himself directing an imaginary orchestra comprised of cows and cowbells in an Alpine pasture, in a sequence of rare magic.

Eighty-two years old, with more than one hundred films made, two Oscars, and not one but two noble titles, Sir Michael Caine is a legend. Born into the working class, with a father who worked as a fish market porter and a mother as a servant, Caine went on to carve a place for himself in the cinematic aristocracy.

Sir Caine, you have said that this time a Cannes award doesn’t matter.

No. I’m already very happy to have worked with Paolo Sorrentino, to have worked with such a fantastic cast. I’ve already received my award, acting in this film.

Were the semi-nude scenes difficult, what with the long close-ups, without makeup?

To those who aren’t old, I say, take a good look! It will happen to you, too! (Caine laughs, editor’s note).

Is playing an elderly character challenging?

The only alternative to playing old characters is playing dead ones. So, I prefer playing the old ones. I thought it was a better idea.

A Cannes, Michael Caine ci è tornato dopo mezzo secolo. Era il 1966 quando era il protagonista di Alfie. ‘Il film vinse il Grand prix du jury, io non vinsi niente. Così pensai: bene, mi sono fatto tutta quella strada per niente! A Cannes non mi rivedranno tanto presto…’

Ci ha messo cinquant’anni per farsi passare l’irritazione. E per la seconda volta è stato beffato. Nessun premio per lui. E lo avrebbe meritato, per una interpretazione tutta disincanto, amarezza, cinismo, rimpianto, ironia. In un hotel termale in mezzo alle Alpi, Caine interpreta un compositore che non vuole più dirigere un’orchestra, neppure per la regina d’Inghilterra. Ma che poi si ritrova a dirigere un’orchestra immaginaria di mucche e campanacci, in un pascolo alpino, in una sequenza di rara magia.

Ottantadue anni, più di cento film, due Oscar. Un titolo nobiliare, anzi due. Sir Michael Caine è una leggenda. Figlio della working class, il padre scaricatore al mercato del pesce, la madre domestica. Ha saputo ritagliarsi un posto nell’aristocrazia del cinema.

Sir Caine, ha detto che questa volta non le importa dei premi di Cannes.

No: sono già così felice di aver lavorato con Paolo Sorrentino, di aver lavorato con un cast fantastico. Io il premio l’ho già ricevuto, interpretando questo film. È stato difficile recitare molte scene seminudo, con piani insistiti sul suo corpo, senza trucchi?

Per quelli che non sono vecchi, dico: guardate bene! Succederà anche a voi! (ride, ndr). È difficile interpretare un personaggio anziano?

L’unica alternativa ad interpretare personaggi anziani è interpretare personaggi morti. Così, ho preferito interpretare dei vecchi.

Ho pensato fosse un’idea migliore.

Ha conosciuto personalmente la regina Elisabetta, sir Caine, oltre che nell’occasione della nomina a sir?

Actor Michael Caine in Youth by Paolo Sorrentino you were knighted?

Yes, once I was at a party. There was this boring-looking fellow next to the queen. And she said to me: Caine, do you know any jokes? And I said: none that I can tell you, Your Majesty. And then she whispered one in my ear. But the worst part is for years I never remembered the joke!

You play an orchestra director in the film. Did you have anyone in mind as a role model, any famous directors?

I had two in mind, two orchestra directors who told me how to move. And I rehearsed for months. Even today I don’t know what I was doing, but I did it.

What does acting mean to you?

It’s living, breathing, keeping up with people. If you don’t keep an eye on others in this field, you’re dead.

What is the most important thing, in your work?

Studying behaviour. I never went to acting school. I learned how to act on the subway, by watching how people moved and what they did.

Describe your relationships with other actors.

I’m not competitive with other actors. I like to see great performances. The only competitiveness I feel is with myself: ‘This time, I must do something absolutely different from what I’ve done before’. And at times I’ve succeeded. That’s what keeps me working.

Your roots are in working-class London. What did you take away from that world?

I am Cockney, which means a certain type of London working class. We are all funny. All of us. We have a fierce side that keeps us from being sad. Someone once asked: ‘Do Cockneys commit suicide?’ And I replied: ‘No. If we get mad, we kill others’.

A lesson your mother taught you?

It was during the Second World War. I was six years old, my brother was three. When my father left to fight, my mother began to cry, then she calmed down and turned to us. And instead of saying: ‘Oh, Lord, I have to take care of you two, all on my own’ she said: ‘Your father has gone. Now you two have to look after me’. And we said: ‘Ok, mommy. Don’t worry. We will.

Everything will be all right’. That one line turned us into men.

What is the greatest compliment you have ever received?

I was working with Sir Laurence Olivier, Lord Olivier. We were making a film called Sleuth. At the end of a scene together, he looked at me and said: ‘I thought I had an assistant. I see now that I have a colleague’.

qualche barzelletta? E io: niente che possa riferirle, Sua Maestà.

E allora lei me ne ha sussurrata una all’orecchio. Ma la cosa più terribile è che da anni non me la ricordo, questa barzelletta!

Lei interpreta nel film un direttore d’orchestra. Aveva in mente dei modelli, dei direttori celebri?

Ne ho avuti due, di modelli. Due direttori d’orchestra, che mi dicevano quali movimenti fare. E io ho fatto prove per mesi. Ancora oggi non so che cosa stessi facendo, ma l’ho fatto.

Che cosa è per lei fare l’attore?

E’ vivere, respirare, muoversi con gli altri. Se non tieni d’occhio gli altri, in questo mestiere, sei morto.

Qual è la cosa più importante, nel suo mestiere?

Studiare i comportamenti. Io non sono mai andato a scuola di teatro. Ho imparato la recitazione nella metropolitana, guardando come si muoveva la gente e che cosa faceva.

Come sono i suoi rapporti con gli altri attori?

Non ho senso di competizione con gli altri attori. Mi piace vedere delle grandi performance.

L’unico senso di competizione che ho, l’ho con me stesso: ‘stavolta, devo fare qualcosa di assolutamente diverso da ciò che ho fatto prima’. E qualche ci sono riuscito. Ecco che cosa mi fa continuare a lavorare.

Le sue origini sono nella working class di Londra. Che cosa ha preso da quel mondo?

Io sono cockney, che significa un certo tipo di working class a Londra. Siamo tutti divertenti. Tutti noi. Abbiamo un lato feroce, che ci impedisce di essere tristi. Qualcuno una volta ha chiesto: ‘i cockney si suicidano?’, e io ho risposto: ‘No. Se si arrabbiano, uccidono gli altri’.

Una lezione che sua madre le ha dato. La ricorda?

Era durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Io avevo sei anni, mio fratello tre. Quando mio padre partì per andare a combattere, mia madre si mise a piangere, poi si calmò e si girò verso noi due.

E invece di dire ‘Oh, Dio, devo badare a voi due, e sono da sola’, disse: ‘Vostro padre se ne è andato. Adesso voi due dovete badare a me’. E noi dicemmo: ‘Ok, mamma.

Non ti preoccupare. Lo faremo. Tutto a posto.’ E fece di noi due degli uomini in una sola frase.

Il più grande complimento che ha ricevuto?

Stavo lavorando con sir Laurence Olivier, lord Olivier. Facevamo un film che si chiamava Sleuth (Gli insospettabili). Finita di girare una scena insieme, mi guardò e mi disse: ‘Pensavo di avere un assistente. Vedo che ho un collega’.

All the World’s Futures is the title chosen for the 56th International Art Exposition curated by Okwui Enwezor. An exposition decidedly complex, aimed at mapping future scenarios, while giving an accurate picture of the problems and frailties of our present time. Our special guide through this year’s Venice Art Biennale is Fabio Cavallucci, director of Prato’s Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art and a prominent figure on the international art scene. With his help, we tried to see the Biennale from another point of view which, while being parallel to Enwezor’s vision, focuses on the aesthetic value of each work of art.

“The theme chosen by Enwezor is not an easy theme to tackle: he ran the serious risk of talking about the future in a language that could, instead, convey the anguish and uncertainty that the present inflicts on us- starts off Fabio-. Actually, this Biennale is a sort of descent into the underworld from the very start: Oscar Murillo’s black flags create an atmosphere that pervades the whole exhibition, in a crescendo of distress that rarely gives way to more optimistic scenarios.

Murillo encourages us to reflect on another aspect of contemporary art: although very young, barely 28 years old, his commercial value is comparable to that of much more experienced artists. I’m not a fan of Murrillo, but I have to admit that the collation of his work at the entrance to the Biennale is very effective.

The Central Pavilion’s first room at the Gardens is definitely one of the best: dedicated to Fabio Mauri, one of the few Italian artists on show, it explores the artistic career of this great dead artist. Once again, we are invited to reflect on the current situation of contemporary art, in particular, of Italian art and its weak influence on the international scene: only four Italian-born artists on display, two of whom dead, Pino Pascali and Mauri, and the other two are natural-

All the World’s Futures è il titolo della 56. Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte curata da Okwui Enwezor. Una esposizione sicuramente complessa, che nasce con l’intento di dipingere scenari futuri, ma in realtà fotografa la difficoltà e allo stesso tempo la fragilità del nostro presente.

Noi abbiamo scelto di vederla con una guida d’eccezione, Fabio Cavallucci, direttore del Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci di Prato e figura di rilievo del panorama internazionale dell’arte. Con lui abbiamo creato un percorso nel percorso, e abbiamo cercato di vedere la Biennale anche da un altro punto di vista, parallelo a quello di Enwezor, che allo stesso tempo privilegia il valore estetico delle singole opere.

“Il tema scelto da Enwezor non è un tema facile da trattare: il rischio di parlare del futuro con un linguaggio che invece comunica l’incertezza e il dubbio che contraddistinguono il presente era molto forte – premette Fabio Cavalucci - In effetti questa Biennale si presenta come una sorta di discesa agli inferi fin dall’ingresso: le bandiere nere di Oscar Murillo segnano un’atmosfera che pervade l’intero percorso, in un crescendo di angoscia che lascia spazio, solo a tratti, a scenari di cupo ottimismo. Murillo ci stimola anche un’altra riflessione sullo stato attuale dell’arte: giovanissimo, ha solo 28 anni, ha raggiunto quotazioni che appartengono ad artisti storicizzati. Di solito non mi convince, ma la collocazione della sua opera all’entrata la trovo molto efficace. La prima stanza nel padiglione centrale ai Giardini è sicuramente una delle più riuscite: dedicata a Fabio Mauri, uno dei pochi italiani in mostra, presenta un’opera storica dell’artista scomparso. Anche qui una riflessione sulla situazione dell’arte contemporanea questa volta italiana e del suo scarso peso sul piano internazionale è obbligatoria: sono solo 4 gli italiani presenti, due dei quali scomparsi, Pino Pascali e Mauri, e due naturalizzati tedeschi, Monica Bonvicini e Rosa Barba. ized German citizens, Monica Bonvicini and Rosa Barba. At the press conference, Enwezor explained the reason behind such a drastic decision: in his opinion, there are no living Italian artists capable of representing the present. I would rather not discuss such a delicate matter right now.

Instead, I would like to talk about Mauri. This installation, which has already been shown at the Biennale in the past, represents all his personal tragedy and that of the Jews who were forced to leave their homeland. The suitcase is the symbol of this diaspora, but also a wall of suspicion, an obstacle to the serenity of an entire nation. In the light of the latest events, this work of art is of great interest and extends far beyond the limited context of a people and a culture for which Mauri had conceived it. It reminds me of Michail Bachtin who, talking about the Russian novel tradition, says that with the end of serfdom Gogol’s dead souls- who were nothing more than the serfs mentioned in bureaucratic records- go from being a limited phenomenon to a universal phenomenon. Like all the human race becomes populated with dead souls, the same can be said about Mauri’s work, which moves gradually from personal tragedy to universal value.

In the second room, we find Christian Boltanski, which is showcased twice throughout the exhibition: at first, a highly-emotional video, dating back to the sixties, shows a man who coughs and vomits blood non-stop, and further ahead, at the Arsenal, another work, another videoinstallation, whose faint tinkling is also a pleasant and sweet sound of death.

Robert Smithson’s land art, a huge uprooted and lifeless trees, another symbol of destruction, serves as an introduction to the environmental installation by Thomas Hirschhorn, an artist I am very fond of. In Venice, as he had done before at Manifesta in St. Petersburg, the artist simulates the collapse of a part of the building, which symbolizes the collapse of our everyday life, of the world made up of the things we know best. He is a large-scale artist, who speaks of a time that is nearing its end.

I find that the space called Arena is one of the basic ingredients of this year’s Biennale: depelare anche le motivazioni di una scelta così radicale: secondo lui non ci sono artisti italiani viventi in grado di raccontare il presente. Non mi soffermo su un tema fin troppo spinoso in questo momento storico. Preferisco piuttosto soffermarmi su Mauri: con questa installazione, che è già stata esposta a una Biennale in passato, rappresenta tutto il suo dramma personale e allo stesso tempo quello degli ebrei che devono lasciare la loro patria. La valigia è simbolo di questa diaspora ma anche muro di diffidenza, ostacolo alla serenità per un intero popolo. Alla luce degli eventi di questi ultimi anni, quest’opera si presenta quanto mai attuale e molto più diffusa rispetto all’ambito circoscritto per il quale l’aveva pensata Mauri. Mi viene in mente a questo proposito Michail Bachtin che, parlando del romanzo russo, sostiene che con la fine della servitù della gleba, le anime morte descritte da Gogol - che erano nient’altro che i servi della gleba citati negli atti burocratici- si trasformano da fenomeno circoscritto a fenomeno universale. Come tutto il genere umano diventa popolato da anime morte, lo stesso avviene per l’opera di Mauri che da dramma particolare assume un valore universale. Nella seconda stanza Christian Boltanski, che torna due volte nel percorso espositivo: all’inizio con un video della fine degli anni ’60 di forte impatto emotivo - un uomo tossisce e vomita sangue in maniera ininterrotta - e più avanti, all’Arsenale, con un secondo lavoro, un’altra videoinstallazione dove un flebile tintinnio è allo stesso tempo un suono piacevole e dolce e suono di morte.

La land art di Robert Smithson, un grande albero sradicato e senza vita, che parla ancora di distruzione è il preludio all’installazione ambientale di Thomas Hirschhorn, un artista che personalmente amo molto. A Venezia, come aveva già fatto durante Manifesta a San Pietroburgo, l’artista simula il crollo di una parte dell’edificio, che è anche simbolo del crollo del nostro quotidiano, di un mondo fatto di cose che conosciamo bene. È un artista che lavora in sovrabbondanza, che racconta un tempo che sta finendo. Trovo che lo spazio chiamato Arena sia un elemento fondamentale di questa edizione della Biennale: progettata dall’architetto artista David Adjaye è una quinta teatrale che per tutta la durata dell’esposizione è palcoscenico di letture tratte da Il Capitale di Karl Marx. Una scelta che ho interpretato come volontà di

signed by architect-artist David Adjaye, it is a stage where passages from The Capital by Karl Marx will be read throughout the whole Biennale period. I see it as a return to the origins of contemporaneity, of which capitalism is one of its major roots. It was not Enwezor’s original idea: Catherine David had done something very similar at Documenta in 1997, as well as Francesco Bonami at the Venice Biennale he curated. The Central Pavilion ends on a light note, more denunciation, but less emphatic in tone. Created by Jeremy Deller, the last room describes the excessive power that employers possess condensed in one sentence: there is no sarcasm in his work, not even subtle irony, but rather his trying to avoid adding any more drama to what is already a dramatic situation under certain circumstances”. We have ended our tour of the Gardens and we follow our guide to the Arsenal. “I prefer this part of the exhibition, which opens with a magnificent installation by Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed: knives and swords rise from the earth as if they were dangerous and noxious flowers. These flowers are lit by Bruce Nauman’s neon signs representing the eternal conflict between life and death.

It would be too long a story to describe every single note of this symphony performed here at the Arsenal, telling the uncertainty and fear of our present time: death described through the images by Steve McQueen in a double video; Monica Bonvicini’s threatening weapons; Georg Baselitz’s wounded humanity racked with pain; war as described by Harun Farocki. However, even the Arsenal exhibition ends on a positive note: by purchasing the bricks of the installation by Rirkrit Tiravanija, visitors will support an association that helps and protects oppressed workers. Actual participation is perhaps one of the possible futures”. The Venice Biennale is attended by 89 countries, which is what Fabio Cavallucci says he likes best about the whole event: the US Pavilion with the multimedia installations by Joan Jonas; the little tannery of a small Greek town which well describes Greece’s current situation; the brilliant work by C.T. Jasper and Joanna Malinowska for the Polish Pavilion, which stages an opera at Haiti and sheds light, although too late, on historical events unknown to many. ritornare alle origini della contemporaneità, una contemporaneità che ritrova nel capitalismo una radice importante. Concluso il percorso ai Giardini, continuiamo con il nostre mentore all’Arsenale: “Personalmente preferisco questa parte dell’esposizione che si apre con una magnifica installazione dell’artista algerino Adel Abdessemed: coltelli e spade che emergono dal terreno quasi fossero fiori nocivi e pericolosi. Questi fiori si presentano ai nostri occhi appena illuminati dalle scritte luminose di Bruce Nauman, che parlano dell’eterno dissidio tra vita e morte.

Sarebbe lungo soffermarmi sulle singole note di questa sinfonia che racconta l’incertezza e la paura del presente in scena all’Arsenale: c’è la morte narrata attraverso le immagini firmate da Steve McQueen in un duplice video; ci sono le armi minacciose di Monica Bonvicini; l’umanità lacerata e ferita di Georg Baselitz; la guerra raccontata da Harun Farocki. Ma anche all’Arsenale, l’ultima nota è un suono di speranza: acquistando i mattoni dell’installazione di Rirkrit Tiravanija si sostiene un’associazione a tutela dei lavoratori oppressi. Una concreta partecipazione è forse uno dei futuri possibili.”

La Biennale è anche quella delle 89 partecipazioni nazionali, una parte che Fabio Cavallucci ammette di amare molto: il padiglione degli Stati Uniti, con le installazioni multimediali di Joan Jonas; il piccolo negozio di conceria della provincia greca che racconta il dramma di questo paese; e infine la geniale opera di C.T. An interview with Virgilio Sieni, director of the Dance Biennal Un’intervista con Virgilio Sieni, direttore artistico di Biennale Danza Venice seems to be made for welcoming and amplifying the beauty liberated by the artists that pass through it. From June 25 to 28, the Dance Biennial brings 16 choreographers to the city, with performances and workshops that look at man’s ability to inhabit the world.

What has been the spirit of the dance section at the Biennal in these three years of work?

A philosophy that looks at the body as an opportunity given to us to communicate and send out positive messages to the world. From the outset, the idea was to see the Biennial from more than one point of view, starting from different places. That of the body, or that system of languages through ​​ which we can have a vision of the world, that of physical space, topography of the city, creating a geography of spaces interacting with each other. Con quale spirito ha tracciato il profilo della sezione danza della Biennale in questi tre anni di lavoro?

Con una filosofia che guarda al corpo come a una opportunità che ci è data di comunicare messaggi positivi al mondo. L’idea è stata fin dall’inizio quella di vedere la Biennale sotto più di un punto di vista, partendo da luoghi diversi. Quello del corpo, quel sistema di linguaggi attraverso i quali possiamo avere una visione del mondo, quello dello spazio fisico e topografico della città creando una geografia di spazi dialoganti tra loro, e Venezia si è offerta come città ideale, quello dello spazio-tempo, facendo iniziare gli spettacoli in pieno giorno e proseguire fino alla sera, creando camminamenti di pubblico nella città, passando da luoghi chiusi come i palazzi a luoghi aperti come le calli e i campielli.

Cosa le sta regalando questa esperienza in termini di ricerca e di riflessione artistica?

L’essere chiamato a individuare qualcosa di nuovo che non sia dettato dalla stravaganza ma dalla sostanza, e il continuo dialogo tra il mio lavoro artistico e ciò che ogni volta ritrovo o scopro a Venezia.

It is not a question of canonical places for pre-packaged shows, but almost artisan workshops in which complexity, details and even imperfections are accepted.

What places in Venice are involved?

A first group of eight spaces around the Arsenale. Then we have identified ten areas in the San Marco area such as Ca’ Giustinian, Campo Sant’Angelo and Campo San Maurizio, the rehearsal room of the Conservatory. Then we move into the area of the Zattere in places like Campo Sant’ Agnese which interacts with Palazzo Trevisan and nearby San Trovaso with the involvement of a boatyard, an obsolete space to remind us of the world of a certain kind of dexterity.

The dignity of the gesture is at the centre of your research...

The dignity of the gesture stands in our respect for each other. The dancer’s gesture, but also anyone’s, should always be respectful toward others.

You have always used dancers/ non-dancers, but your shows are always a culmination of perfection and rigour. What’s the secret?

Being able to look at another person and knowing how to touch them, to move. Knowing how to identify the crucial points in others that keep them balanced.

What are your most important commitments after the Biennal?

Immediately after the Biennial, with my company, we will give life to Cenacoli Fiorentini, a magnificent manifestation inside six historic circles or cenacoli in Florence, where the frescoes of Renaissance masters are preserved. Following that are projects in Lugano and Tokyo, then a big commitment in Italy dedicated to Dante, Ballo 1265, on thirty-three cantos of the Inferno, debuting later this year with the participation of about one hundred performers, both professional and amateur. Another production in the pipeline for 2016 concerns the Rituale, started at the Comunale of Bologna with Sagra della Primavera. Another will be created for the Fondazione Prada in Milan.

The Venice of Virgilio Sieni, during an afternoon break?

Una prima polis di otto spazi intorno all’Arsenale, poi abbiamo individuato dieci spazi nella zona di San Marco come Ca’ Giustinian, Campo Sant’Angelo e Campo San Maurizio, la sala prove del Conservatorio. Poi ci spostiamo nella zona delle Zattere in luoghi come Campo Sant’Agnese che è in dialogo con Palazzo Trevisan e accanto San Trovaso con il coinvolgimento di uno squero, uno spazio desueto chiamato a ricordarci il mondo di una certa manualità.

La dignità del gesto è al centro della sua ricerca...

La dignità del gesto ci erge al rispetto verso l’altro. Il gesto - e non solo quello del danzatore - dovrebbe sempre guardare l’altro con rispetto.

Lei utilizza anche danzatori/non danzatori, però i suoi spettacoli sono sempre una summa di perfezione e rigore. Qual è il segreto?

Saper guardare l’altro, saperlo toccare e muovere. Saper individuare in lui i punti cruciali che lo mantengono in equilibrio.

Quali impegni verranno per lei dopo la Biennale?

Subito dopo la Biennale con la mia Compagnia daremo vita ai Cenacoli Fiorentini, una manifestazione magnifica dentro sei cenacoli storici di Firenze dove sono custoditi gli affreschi di grandi maestri del Rinascimento. Seguiranno progetti a Lugano e a Tokyo, poi un bel lavoro in Italia dedicato a Dante, Ballo 1265, sui trentatré canti dell’Inferno che debutta a fine anno con la partecipazione di circa cento interpreti tra professionisti e non. Tra le produzioni in cantiere per il 2016 una riguarda il Rituale, avviato al Comunale di Bologna con la Sagra della Primavera, un’altra sarà realizzata per la Fondazione Prada a Milano.

La Venezia di Virgilio Sieni in un pomeriggio di pausa?

Mi incammino verso San Zaccaria per ritrovare la pala del Bellini: il bambino in braccio alla Madonna ha un piedino sollevato sulla sua mano che sta sopra un bell’angelo che suona la viola. Quello è il più bel passo di danza che si possa immaginare. Poi, soprattutto in questo periodo, mi perdo senza meta nella città immersa nel contemporaneo quest’anno dell’arte, l’anno scorso dell’architettura.

La sua è una carriera vissuta al massimo grado di espressione personale e artistica che le ha valso encomi e riconoscimenti in tutto il mondo, ricorda l’istante in cui ha scelto di abbracciarla?

Tra i vari momenti ne ricordo uno in particolare, l’incontro con la mia prima insegnante Traut Streiff Faggioni, uno di quegli incontri meravigliosi che in un attimo si manifestano come un gesto di liberazione.

Venice’s Civic Museums examine art from the 1900s I Musei Civici Veneziani guardano all’arte del ‘900

During the Biennale, considered the pinnacle of contemporary art, Venice’s Civic Museums will explore modernity in German art during the 14-year Weimar Republic with New Objectivity: Modern German Art in the Weimar Republic, 1919–1933 (until August 30 at the Correr Museum).

This was a period in which German artists were tackling the devastating consequences of the First World War, along with the social, cultural and economic effects of the rapid process of modernisation, and devastating rampant unemployment. In the years between the end of the war and the rise of Nazism, the first German democracy witnessed the decline of Expressionism, the exuberant anti-art activities of the Dadaists, the foundation of the Bauhaus, and the emergence of a new Realism. Along with prominent figures such as Otto Dix, George Grosz, Christian Schad, August Sander and Max Beckmann, whose varied career paths are essential to understanding modern German art, the exhibit allows for a discovery of names less known to the public at large, including Hans Finsler, Georg Schrimpf, Heinrich Maria Davringhausen, Carl Grossberg and Aenne Biermann. The staging fosters in particular a comparison of painting and photography, offering the rare opportunity to examine analogies and differences among various expressive spheres within the movement.

The show is subdivided into five thematic sections: Life in democracy and the aftermath of the war demonstrates the disparity between the rising bourgeoisie and those social classes more impacted by the conflict; The city and the nature of landscape investigates the growing divide between the evermore industrialised urban setting and the rural world recalled through nostalgia; Still life and commodities focuses on a new type of still life; Man and the machine explores the rapid growth of industrialisation; and, lastly, New identities: human types and portraiture illustrates a new trend of por84 Venezia | made in Veneto

This is a touring exhibition dedicated to the monumental Mural (1943, University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City), a work made by Pollock for the New York City apartment of Peggy Guggenheim, who commissioned the work, between Summer and Autumn 1943. After an important 18-monthrestoration process carried out at the Getty Conservation Institute, Mural has come to Italy for the first time, in occasion of the exhibition at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. In the exhaustive text published alongside the exhibition Jackson Pollock, Mural. Energy Made Visible (Thames & Hudson, London, 2015), curator David Anfam investigates all the sources, Con i suoi sei metri di lunghezza, il ‘dinamico’ Murale è l’opera più grande che Jackson Pollock abbia mai realizzato ed ha esercitato un impatto sismico sull’arte americana dell’epoca, fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri.

Con le sue dimensioni monumentali ha introdotto nell’Espressionismo astratto americano un nuovo concetto di scala e di audacità, anticipando le più “tradizionali” astrazioni, rese attraverso la tecnica dello sgocciolamento, che Pollock avrebbe rappresentato quattro anni più tardi.

E’ a quest’opera che la Collezione Peggy Guggenheim presenta, in anteprima assoluta, fino al 16 novembre, la mostra Jackson Pollock, Murale. Energia resa visibile, a cura di David Anfam, Senior Consulting Curator del Clyfford Still Museum di Denver, eminente esperto dell’Espressionismo astratto americano, e organizzata dall’University of Iowa Museum of Art. Si tratta di un’esposizione itinerante dedicata appunto a Murale (1943, University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City) che Jackson Pollock realizzò per l’appartamento newyorkese di Peggy Guggenheim, committente dell’opera, tra l’estate e l’autunno del 1943. Dopo un importante intervento di conservazione e pulitura al Getty Conservation Institute, durato 18 mesi, il Murale arriva per la prima volta in Italia, per la mostra a Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. The ‘dynamic’ Mural is the largest work ever completed

by Jackson Pollock

influences and meanings related to Mural. Its large seized dimensions, which remind to the large areas of Western America where both Pollock and his friend Clyfford Still –another relevant representative artist of the American Abstract Expressionism- were raised, meet the desire of Pollock –nourished by his admiration for great Mexican mural artists and by the thought of the successes achieved by master Thomas Hart Benton- of shifting from the easel to the wall.

Mural is presented as part of a selection of works which includes Pollock’s Alchemy and works by other artists as well, like the artist’s wife Lee Krasner, David Smith and Robert Motherwell with his Elegy to The Spanish Republic 126, on display in front of Mural as a tribute to Pollock himself. Furthermore, the exhibition crucially casts new light on the relationship the artist had with the action photography done by a group of photographers like Herbert Matter, Barbara Morgan, Aaron Siskind and Gjon Mili. After this stop in Venice, the exhibition will bring Mural to the Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle of Berlin and then to the Picasso Museum in Malaga. The exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions held at the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation during 2015 as a tribute to the Pollock brothers, together with the previous exhibition Jackson Pollokc’s Alchemy. A Journey Inside The Matter and Charles Pollock. A Retrospective ( until the 14th of September).

Le sue dimensioni su larga scala, evocative degli ampi spazi dell’ovest americano, dove sia Pollock che l’amico Clyfford Still, altro esponente di punta dell’Espressionismo astratto americano, crebbero, soddisfano il desiderio di Pollock, alimentato da quella sua ammirazione per i grandi muralisti messicani e dal ricordo dei traguardi raggiunti dal maestro Thomas Hart Benton, a spostarsi dal supporto su cavalletto alla parete. Il contesto all’interno del quale è inserito il Murale comprende l’opera Alchimia, sempre di Pollock, nonché opere di artisti come Lee Krasner, moglie dell’artista, David Smith e Robert Motherwell, con la sua Elegia alla Repubblica spagnola N.126, esposta di fronte al Murale, quale tributo a Pollock stesso.

Inoltre, la mostra getta una nuova, fondamentale, luce sul rapporto tra Pollock e la fotografia d’azione praticata da un gruppo di fotografi quali Herbert Matter, Barbara Morgan, Aaron Siskind e Gjon Mili. Dopo la tappa veneziana, il Murale sarà esposto alla Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle di Berlino e successivamente al Museo Picasso di Malaga. On the third Sunday of July, the Redentore’s celebration, Venetian people’s favorite Terza domenica di Luglio, Festa del Redentore, la più amata dai veneziani It was the year 1576 and a devastating plague raged through the city. While the nobles took refuge in the beautiful villas that Palladio had built for them in the Venetian countryside, the Senate tried to isolate the infected population by relegating them to some islands. But the outbreak continued. The Doge Alvise Mocenigo decided to swear a solemn vow that, if the plague ended, he would build a church dedicated to the Redentore (Redeemer) on the Giudecca while the Senate added the requirement of participating in a procession each year on the third Sunday of July. The following winter the epidemic ended and the Doge Sebastiano Venier commissioned the architect Andrea Palladio to design and construct the beautiful temple dedicated to the Redeemer to give thanks for ending the epidemic. To reach Giudecca Island more than eighty galleys were placed to support the bridge across which the Doge and the Sodalities led the solemn devotional procession in thanksgiving for overcoming the plague. Since then a pontoon bridge has been built between the Zattere and the Giudecca, just in front of the Church, so that the pilgrims, priests and political authorities can process to the Redentore Church. The celebrations include the solemn mass presided by the Patriarch and the religious procession, while the weekend of events concludes with the regatta on gondolas, as part of the Venetian Rowing Season. This particular Festival is one of the most heartfelt by the Venetians. It joins together the religious and spectacular aspects, thanks to a sensational firework display that attracts thousands of visitors. The citizens gather on the shores of the Giudecca from the early morning to find a place at the tables, which are traditionally set out to dine outdoors, and watch the “foghi” (fireworks) of the Notte Famosissima (Famous Night) while the basin fills with boats decorated with colourful balloons and 92 Venezia | made in Veneto

Correva l’anno 1576 e la pestilenze imperversava nella città.

Se i nobili si rifugiarono nelle splendide ville che il Palladio aveva costruito per loro nelle campagne venete, il Senato cercò di allontanare la popolazione infetta relegandola sulle isole. Ma l’epidemia non sembrava cessare. Il Doge Alvise Mocenigo decise di firmare un voto solenne, qualora la pestilenza fosse cessata, innalzare alla Giudecca una chiesa dedicata al Redentore mentre il Senato vi aggiunse l’obbligo di recarsi in processione ogni anno la 3° domenica di luglio.

Il successivo inverno mise fine all’epidemia e il Doge Sebastiano Venier incaricò l’architetto Andrea Palladio della progettazione e costruzione del tempio dedicato al Redentore come ringraziamento per la fine del contagio.

Per recarsi all’isola della Giudecca vennero accostate più di ottanta galee per sorreggere il ponte attraverso il quale il Doge e le Scuole Grandi portarono solennemente al tempio la devozione ed il ringraziamento per la passata paura. Da allora un ponte di barche viene creato tra la riva delle Zattere e la Giudecca, proprio di fronte alla Chiesa, perché le autorità politiche, religiose ed i pellegrini possano andare in corteo alla chiesa del Redentore. Le celebrazioni includono la funzione solenne presieduta dal patriarca e la processione religiosa, mentre il week-end si conclude con la regata su gondole, all’interno della Stagione Remiera di Voga alla Veneta.

Questa particolare festività è tra le più sentite dai veneziani. In essa convivono l’aspetto religioso e quello spettacolare, grazie al sensazionale spettacolo pirotecnico che attrae migliaia di visitatori. It is precisely here that small vessels like gondolas, pupparini, sandoli, sciopòni and other kinds of boat typical of the lagoon tradition are created, built and repaired. In the middle of the 18th Century around fifty squèri were documented in the city and there were 125 artisans registered in the corporation of the squerariòli.

Today there are far fewer and the final blow was given by the arrival of engines to the boating world.

However, five boatyards capable of constructing gondolas have remained operative in the old part of the city (Tramontin, Gianfranco Vianello “Crea”, Roberto Dei Rossi, Daniele Bonaldo and Lorenzo Della Toffola). Over two months’ work, 8 different types of wood, 280 nailed pieces, 11 metres long and 1.42 metres wide. These are the figures of a gondola, the symbol of Venice and formerly the Doge’s means of transport, as well as the proud possession of the 400 Venetian gondoliers. They are only built in the winter (during the summer the squeraroli only perform maintenance) and it is carried out by hand.

Sono rimasti però attivi, in centro storico, cinque cantieri in grado di costruire gondole (Tramontin, Gianfranco Vianello “Crea”, Roberto Dei Rossi, Daniele Bonaldo e Lorenzo Della Toffola). Oltre due mesi di lavoro, 8 legnami diversi, 280 pezzi inchiodati, 11 metri di lunghezza per 1,42 di larghezza. Sono questi i numeri della gondola, simbolo di Venezia e già mezzo di trasporto del Doge, nonchè vanto degli oltre 400 gondolieri veneziani. Today, in the historic center of Venice ,there are five shipyards left still capable of building gondolas excursions and hickory, for its ductility, if it becomes wet, it fosters the finishing touches. The squéro Domenico Tramontin & Figli of Roberto Tramontin, in the Sestier of Dorsoduro, in Ognissanti, is the oldest in terms of continuous operation. It is worth a visit for its insight into skilled craftsmanship, which conveys ancient knowledge that is increasing difficult to find. The company was founded on 2nd February 1884 by Domenico Tramontin who, having learned the art building gondolas in the boatyard of Casal ai Servi, made significant changes the model of hull built until then. These changes were so favourably received that even the other constructors definitively adopted them. At the stern, the bottom was widened to support and compensate the significant weight of the gondoliers of the period and the upper works was raised with a broader curve, giving the boat a more elegant line. His son Nedis, the unforgettable gondola constructor who passed away in 2005 after creating the boats of the pope (gondoliers) for over seventy years, spent most of his life designing, building and repairing. He was always considered the most faithful exponent and keeper of gondola construction secrets prepared in the second half of the 19th century by Domenico, and he transmitted his knowledge to his son Roberto, a master shipwright. Roberto Tramontin’s squero now makes very few but highly sought after gondolas, meaning that the crisis is not due to a lack of demand (his clients include the Savoy family). Many

Lo squéro Domenico Tramontin & Figli di Roberto Tramontin, nel sestiere di Dorsoduro, agli Ognissanti, è il più antico nel senso di gestione continuativa. Meritevole di una visita per la sua alta artigianalità che perpetua un sapere antico, sempre più raro ad incontrare.

La ditta è stata fondata il 2 febbraio 1884 da Domenico Tramontin che, appresa l’arte di costruire gondole nel cantiere dei Casal ai Servi, apportò importanti cambiamenti al modello di scafo fino a quel momento costruito, modifiche che incontrarono un così ampio favore da essere accolte definitivamente anche dagli altri costruttori. A poppa venne allargato il fondo per sostenere e compensare il notevole peso dei gondolieri dell’epoca ed innalzata con una più ampia curva l’opera morta donando alla barca una linea più elegante. Il figlio Nedis, indimenticabile costruttore di gondole scomparso nel 2005 dopo aver dato vita alle barche dei pope per più di settanta anni, ha trascorso gran parte della sua a progettare, costruire e riparare. Considerato da sempre il più fedele interprete e custode delle tecniche costruttive della gondola, messe a punto nella seconda metà dell’800 dal nonno Domenico ha trasmesso al figlio Roberto, maestro d’ascia, il suo sapere.

Dallo squero di Roberto Tramontin oggi escono pochissime ed ambite gondole, a significare che la crisi non è dovuta dalla mancanza di domanda (tra i suoi clienti anche la famiglia Savoia).

memories are present here including the emotional arrival in Venice of the gondola which belonged to the famous poet Robert Browning in 1848 for restoration and which is currently held in “The Mariner’s Museum” in Newport, Virginia. The squèri are in any case small worlds with a rich pathos, in which time seems to have stood still. The working instruments are similar to those which were used centuries ago, while the smell of pitch wafts amongst the gondolas being constructed lying on one side, outside and inside the wooden huts. The boatyard of San Trovaso is an intensely charming corner just a short distance from the Galleria dell’Accademia, at the junction between rio di Ognissanti and rio di San Trovaso. The building housing it has the typical shape of a mountain house, which is strange for Venice.

There are two reasons for this: on the one hand both the craftsmen and the wood for construction came from Cadore, on the other, the slope of the yard in front and the canopy that partially covered it were useful in the event of rain, also as a store for the working tools. It is a craftsman’s workshop where gondolas are built and repaired. Founded in the 17th Century, when by the Doge’s Decree, gondolas had to be painted black as a sign of mourning for the plague, it is still operating and has the wooden canopies. Lorenzo Della Toffola, known as “Lollo”, started to build wooden boats when he was still at school, as a hobby, later choosing to make this passion his profession.

Tanti sono i ricordi vissuti in questo tra cui gli emozionanti momenti dell’arrivo a Venezia dall’America, per un accurato restauro, della gondola appartenuta nel 1848 al celebre poeta Robert Browning ed attualmente custodita nel “The Mariner’s Museum” a Newport, Virginia. Gli squèri sono ad ogni modo dei piccoli mondi ricchi di pathos, in cui il tempo sembra essersi fermato. Gli strumenti di lavoro sono simili a quelli che si usavano secoli fa mentre l’odore della pece aleggia tra le gondole in costruzione adagiate su un fianco, fuori e dentro le baracche di legno. Il cantiere di San Trovaso è un angolo intensamente suggestivo a pochi passi dalla Galleria dell’Accademia, all’incrocio tra il rio di Ognissanti e il rio di San Trovaso. L’edificio che lo ospita ha la forma tipica delle case di montagna, circostanza eccezionale per Venezia. Il motivo è duplice: da una parte tanto i carpentieri quanto il legname da costruzione provenivano dal Cadore, dall’altra l’inclinazione del piazzale antestante e la tettoia che in parte lo ricopre erano utili in caso di pioggia, oltre che come deposito per gli strumenti di lavoro. E’ un laboratorio di artigianato dove si creano e si riparano le gondole. Fondato nel Seicento, quando per decreto dogale, le gondole dovettero essere verniciate in nero in segno di lutto per la peste, è ancora attivo, e si presenta con le tettoie di legno. Lorenzo Della Toffola, detto “Lollo”, ha cominciato a costruire imbarcazioni di legno ai tempi del liceo come hobby, scegliendo poi di fare di questa sua passione una professione.

The rediscovered island L’isola ritrovata

Situated at the entrance of the lagoon, about three kilometres north-east of Venice, the island, from ancient times onward, probably played a strategic role in controlling the inland water ways, as it was located along the route that in Roman times led from Ravenna to Altino. Archaeological findings give evidence of a human presence there since the Bronze Age, while the first written document dates back to 1015, a deed in which the island is called “Vigna Murada”.

Religious role From the end of the eleventh century, the island became the property of the Benedictine monks of San Giorgio Maggiore, who built a church dedicated to St. Bartholomew. “Vigna Murada” was surrounded by salt marshes. Salt production in the Middle Ages was an important economic resource in the North lagoon. Its main centre was in Torcello.

Health facility In 1468, by decree of the Senate of the Venetian Republic, a Lazzaretto or quarantine hospital was established on the island of Vigna Murata. Its role was to prevent the spread of infections. It was called “Novo” or “New” to distinguish it from the other facility near the Lido (called “Vecchio” or “Old”), where instead plague victims were hospitalized. The island became a place for “contumacy” (quarantine) for ships coming from various Mediterranean ports, suspected to be carriers of the disease. To make the health facility, located opposite the port of Saint Erasmus, more efficient, many buildings were built. In 1576, Francesco Sansovino tells us that it was “equipped with a hundred rooms and (...) had a faint resemblance to a castle”. The appearance is due to a hundred grand fireplaces in Venetian style, which are found in each cell (“room”), located near the boundary wall. In the interior spaces, large sheds (“Teze”) were built for purging goods: this was done mainly using the smoke of aromatic herbs like ginger and rosemary. Posta all’ingresso della laguna, a tre chilometri circa a nordest di Venezia, l’isola fin dall’antichità ha avuto probabilmente una funzione strategica a controllo delle vie acquee verso l’entroterra, situata com’era lungo il percorso endolagunare che in epoca romana da Ravenna giungeva ad Altino. Reperti archeologici testimoniano la presenza umana già dall’età del bronzo, mentre il primo documento scritto risale al 1015: un atto notarile dove l’isola è chiamata “Vigna Murada”.

Funzione religiosa Dalla fine dell’XI secolo l’isola divenne proprietà dei monaci benedettini di San Giorgio Maggiore che edificarono una chiesa intitolata a San Bartolomeo. La “Vigna Murada” era circondata da saline. La produzione del sale nel Medioevo fu un’importante risorsa economica nella laguna Nord che aveva il suo centro principale a Torcello.

Struttura sanitaria Nel 1468 con decreto del Senato della Serenissima fu istituito nell’isola della Vigna Murata un Lazzaretto con compiti di prevenzione dei contagi, detto “Novo” per distinguerlo dall’altro già esistente vicino al Lido (detto “Vecchio”), dove invece erano ricoverati i casi manifesti di peste. L’isola divenne luogo di “contumacia” (quarantena) per le navi che arrivavano dai vari porti del Mediterraneo, sospette di essere portatrici del morbo.

Per rendere efficiente la struttura sanitaria, posta di fronte al porto di Sant’Erasmo, furono costruiti molti edifici. Nel 1576, racconta Francesco Sansovino, esso è “dotato di cento camere et (…) dalla lontana ha sembianza di castello”.

L’aspetto è dovuto ad un centinaio di grandi camini alla veneziana di cui sono dotate le celle (“camere”), poste a ridosso del muro di cinta.

Negli spazi interni vengono costruite grandi tettoie (“teze”) per l’espurgo delle merci: si usavano soprattutto fumi di erbe aromatiche, quali ginepro e rosmarino. Il principale

The Last Cocktail del Luxury Collection si può degustare poco distante, all’Hotel Danieli, ed è realizzato con gin, succo di limone, purea di pera ed infusione di rosmarino.

Tutti gli ingredienti, ad esclusione del Prosecco, devono essere shakerati, il ghiaccio si aggiunge alla fine ed è servito in un elegante bicchiere Martini. Al St. Regis Venice San Clemente Palace la richiesta per la maggiore è per il Lagoon Mary che si ispira ai viaggi di Marco Polo che instaurò un contatto diretto con i produttori di spezie. The ingredients that distinguish the Lagoon Mary are: Hendrick’s Gin, tomato juice, drops of basil syrup and Tabasco, celery salt, fresh basil leaves and lime.

The spices (white pepper, cardamom, ginger and cinnamon) are mixed separately and then combined with Hendrick’s Gin (infused for 24 hours).

Then the ice is added, and the Tabasco, celery salt, tomato juice, basil syrup and spiced gin, and finally the drink is garnished with fresh basil leaves and lime.

The gem of drinks at The Westin Europa & Regina is called Clockwork Orange, created from scratch by barman Giorgio Fadda for director Stanley Kubrick.

Take 10-12 cubes of ice and place them in a blender.

Add two leaves of red Chioggia radicchio, orange juice, a teaspoon of bitter orange marmalade, two drops of balsamic vinegar, mandarin orange liquor and Citron Vodka.

Blend well, pour in a chilled wine glass, and garnish with a decorative radicchio leaf. Not far from here is the Bar Canale of the prestigious Bauer Hotel, where in summer guests can relax and enjoy the spectacular view of the Grand Canal and the Salute Church.

The bar, renowned and esteemed for its creative cocktails, offers various tasty choices: among others, the Merchant of Venice, created in 2004 by then head barman, Gennaro Florio for actor Al Pacino when he was filming scenes for director Michael Radford’s Shakespeare adaptation. This is a refreshing cocktail made with green Vodka, Cointreau, and 7up. At Caffè Baglioni on Calle Vallaresso, try the distinct long drink created for the inauguration of the Top Suite San Giorgio, made from St-Germain, Di Saronno Originale, and top of Baglioni Prosecco.

Prepared directly in a glass tumbler, with measured doses and ice, this drink is served with an added twist of pink grapefruit, mint leaves, and fresh raspberries.

In Venice also try the “Detox” drinks served on the Rooftop Terrace of Ca’ Sagredo, named for the colours of fruits and vegetables from which they are made: the green (spinach, cabbage, pear, kiwi, ginger), the orange (carrot, melon, pear, strawberries), and the red (beet, red apple, pear, strawberries). These are natural drinks that purify the body.

Aggiungere due foglie di radicchio rosso di Chioggia, succo d’arancia, un cucchiaio di marmellata di arance amare, due gocce di aceto balsamico, liquore mandarinetto e Citron Vodka. Amalgamare bene e versare in un bicchiere di vino fresco.

Ricordarsi di aggiungere una foglia di radicchio per l’abbellimento. Poco distante si trova la terrazza del Bar Canale del prestigioso albergo Bauer.

In estate, gli ospiti possono rilassarsi godendosi la vista spettacolare del Canal Grande e della Chiesa della Salute. Il bar, rinomato e ricercato per i suoi cocktail creativi, offre scelte gustose. Combining tradition and excellence: the Venissa Estate and its Osteria Contemporanea Tra tradizione ed eccellenza, la Tenuta Venissa e la sua Osteria Contemporanea A place where to rediscover the traditions of a rich territory, where to enjoy unforgettable food and wine tasting experiences. This is the Venissa Estate, and above all its Osteria Contemporanea, the new project by the Bisol family after the Estate’s Restaurant, created five years after Venissa to celebrate Venetian traditional home cuisine. The Venissa Estate is located on Mazzorbo, which is part, with the islands of Torcello and Burano, of the Native Venice. Here the main grape variety is an ancient local one, the Dorona di Venezia: with particular leaves, it results in a strong, persisting and elegant nectar. A grape variety that was about to disappear and that Gianluca Bisol rediscovered almost by chance: “I was taking some guests to the island of Torcello, when I noticed an old vineyard in a private house next to the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption.

I managed to convince the lady who owned the house to send me some ripe grapes. It was the famous Dorona, also called Golden Grape, so appreciated by the Venetians and present at the banquets given by the Doges before it disappeared.” It took years of historical and oenological research -carried out because of the Bisol family’s love for Venice and with the support of the technical skills of Desiderio Bisol and of winemaker Roberto Cipresso- to produce Venissa. Which is a rare wine: a little bit more than 40 quintals obtained from a hectare of vineyard, a piece of the history of Venice. A white wine whose maceration reminds to great red wines. Unforgettable when paired with the food specialties of the Lagoon and the Native venice, like the Moeche and Castraure Seafood Dish. Specialties that can be tasted at the Osteria Contemporanea, which is collecting the secret recipes kept safe in the houses of Mazzurbo, Burano and Torcello. A heritage that successfully comes after the Michelin star given to the Restaurant. Inside the Estate, also six wine suites with view on the vineyards and on the Venetian lagoon.

Un luogo dove scoprire le tradizioni di un territorio ricchissimo, un luogo dove vivere esperienze enogastronomiche memorabili. E’ la Tenuta Venissa e in particolare la nuova Osteria Contemporanea, che nel quinto anno, dalla nascita del progetto Venissa la famiglia Bisol ha deciso di affiancare al Ristorante con l’intenzione di celebrare la cucina domestica.

La Tenuta Venissa sorge a Mazzorbo, isola che assieme a Torcello e Burano fa parte della Venezia Nativa. In questa tenuta è stato recuperato un antico vitigno autoctono, la Dorona di Venezia, un’uva dorata dalla foglia particolare, che regala un nettare di nerbo, longevo ed elegante. Si tratta di un vitigno che stava per essere perduto e che quasi per caso Gianluca Bisol ha riscoperto: “Accompagnando alcuni clienti nell’isola di Torcello notai una vecchia vigna in una casa privata a fianco alla cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Riuscii a convincere la proprietaria a mandarmi un po’ di quell’uva quando fosse stata matura. Era la famosa Dorona, detta anche Uva d’Oro, apprezzata dai veneziani ed usata nei banchetti dei Dogi e poi scomparsa”. Sono stati necessari anni di ricerche storiche ed enologiche dettate dall’amore per Venezia della famiglia Bisol e accompagnate dalla competenza tecnica di Desiderio Bisol e del winemaker Roberto Cipresso, poi si è arrivati a Venissa.

Un vino raro: solo poco più di 40 quintali da un ettaro di vigna, che rappresenta un pezzo di storia di Venezia. Un vino bianco con macerazione da grande rosso. Indimenticabile per accompagnare le eccellenze gastronomiche della Laguna e della Venezia Nativa, come moeche e castraure. Eccellenze che possono essere degustate all’Osteria Contemporanea che sta raccogliendo il patrimonio di ricette custodite nelle case di Mazzorbo, Burano e Torcello. Un patrimonio che si va ad affiancare alla stella Michelin che ha premiato il Ristorante. La tenuta ospita inoltre 6 wine suite, con vista sulla vigna e sulla laguna di Venezia.
