Tradizione chiantigiana e una moderna visione dell’enologia è la filosofia di Colle Bereto, azienda vinicola della famiglia Pinzauti. I 60 ettari di terreno della tenuta sono ripartiti sapientemente al fine di garantire un’altissima qualità: ecco che il Sangiovese, vitigno nobile del Chianti Classico, si ritrova nel Chianti Classico e nel Colle Bereto Chianti Classico Riserva, mentre il Pinot Nero ed il Merlot si esprimono al meglio ne Il Cenno e Il Tocco. Il Pinot Nero è anche protagonista della produzione dello spumante metodo classico Colle B, che grazie ad un’identità ben definita e riconoscibile è riuscito in breve tempo a ritagliarsi un posto d’onore fra gli appassionati di bollicine.

Un’estate importante

Per valorizzare i vini della Costa e far conoscere le bollicine toscane Promoting coastline wines and introducing Tuscany’s spumante wines Summer is in full swing, and what better way to get to know the remarkable wine-makers operating in the Tuscan coastal region than a wine tour of the Tuscan coast: from the Apuan Alps to the Grosseto province, passing through the areas of Pisa, Livorno, and on to the islands. The philosophy of AIS Toscana has always been that of knowledge by acquaintance between producers and sommeliers, and to facilitate this dialogue essential to the cultural growth of the wine world, we have recently organised two important events, T-Wine at the Casone Ugolino in Castagneto Carducci and AIS Spumanti in Versilia at Lido di Camaiore: two events aimed at highlighting on the one hand the wines of the Livornese coast, and on the other to promote the sparkling wines produced in Tuscany. The success has brought such wonderful satisfaction to the parties involved that we will continue this ‘wine tour’ in the coming months, with events beyond the coast yet everfocused on the constructive dialogue we wish to establish with institutions and producers in the wine world. Our philosophy has long been expanding to focus our strategies on the subject of food.

Today the role of sommelier has changed and evolved to more than ambassador of wine culture and wine-makers’ stories, becoming the link between wine and the foods skilfully prepared by cooks and chefs, dishes that must be paired with balance, out of respect for the labour of the land, by producers. For this reason, AIS Toscana has embraced the idea of participating in Eccellenza di Toscana (at the Stazione Leopolda from November 8 to 11 with the Italian Federation of Cooks, the Regional Union of Tuscan cooks, and Cocktails in the World) where over 150 producers will be present to bring to life the Food & Wine in Progress event. I would like to take this opportunity to make a sparkling toast, wishing you all a peaceful summer holiday.

Siamo in piena estate e intraprendere un viaggio enologico nel territorio delle coste di Toscana è ideale per approfondire la conoscenza con le realtà vitivinicole più interessanti che oggi operano lungo tutta la costa toscana: dalle Apuane al grossetano, passando nei territori di Pisa, Livorno fino alle isole. La filosofia di AIS Toscana è da sempre quella della conoscenza diretta tra produttori e sommelier, e proprio per facilitare questo dialogo essenziale per una crescita culturale del mondo del vino, abbiamo organizzato negli ultimi mesi due importanti eventi: T-Wine, al Casone Ugolino di Castagneto Carducci e AIS Spumanti in Versilia a Lido di Camaiore: due eventi con lo scopo di valorizzare da una parte i vini della costa livornese e dall’altra far conoscere meglio le bollicine prodotte in Toscana. Un successo che ha portato grande soddisfazione reciproca tanto che questo ‘wine tour’ continuerà nei prossimi mesi con eventi in altre località della costa, sempre nell’ottica di quel dialogo costruttivo a favore del mondo del vino che vogliamo realizzare con le Istituzioni e con i produttori. La nostra filosofia da tempo si è ampliata dando valore e portando al centro delle nostre strategie l’incontro con il cibo. Oggi la figura del sommelier è cambiata, si è evoluta, oltre ad essere sempre più un ambasciatore di cultura enologica e di storie di uomini che producono vino, è anche l’anello di congiunzione con la tavola, con le pietanze preparate con maestria da cuochi e chef, pietanze che devono essere abbinate con equilibrio per rispettare il lavoro della terra, dei produttori. Per questo AIS Toscana ha sposato l’idea di essere presente con Eccellenza di Toscana (alla Stazione Leopolda dall’ 8 all’ 11 novembre con la Federazione Italiana Cuochi, l’Unione regionale cuochi toscani e Cocktail in the world) dove saranno presenti oltre 150 produttori per dar vita all’evento Food & Wine in Progress. Colgo l’occasione per augurare, con un frizzante brindisi, serene vacanze a tutti voi.

Il ricordo più bello della sua infanzia in un piatto.

Il ragù napoletano di mia nonna. Immaginatevi la domenica, dopo una notte con gli amici, il ragù che bolle dalle 6, il suo profumo che mi sveglia. E il pane con il sugo bollente che mi dà il suo meraviglioso buongiorno.

Il segreto del suo successo?

Crederci sempre, nonostante i sacrifici.

Da dove provengono le sue ispirazioni?

Dalla vita quotidiana. Qualsiasi cosa ti può ispirare.

Cristoforo Trapani fuori dalla cucina: che cosa ama fare?

Mi sento un ragazzo come tanti altri, amo passare il tempo con i miei amici, coltivare l’orto, andare per funghi…

Toscana, luogo del suo lavoro, e Campania, terra delle sue origini.

Che cosa ci aspetta a La Magnolia?

Un’inedita cucina fusion tra queste due terre così ricche di sapori.

Un abbinamento in onore della costa.

I miei spaghetti pomodoro giallo, gamberi rossi, burrata e cotenna soffiata, accompagnati da un bicchiere di Degeres dell’azienda vinicola Montepepe di Massa Carrara.

Your favorite places on the Tuscan coast?

A walk with my friend Luca Landi on the Apuan Alps looking for special herbs and flowers. Toscana Foto Festival in Massa Marittima and dining at Luciano Zazzeri’s La Pineta restaurant in Marina di Bibbona.

The most beautiful memory of your childhood in a dish.

My grandma’s Neapolitan Meat Sauce . Just imagine: on Sunday, after a night spent with friends, the smell of the meat sauce that has been in the pot since 6 a.m. wakes me up. And the bread with the hot sauce for a wonderful good morning.

The secret of your success?

To always believe in it, despite all the efforts made.

What are your sources of inspiration?

My daily life, everything can inspire you, in fact.

Cristoforo Trapani outside the kitchen: what does he like to do?

I am just a boy like every other, I love to spend time with my friends, grow my vegetable garden and go hunting for mushrooms..

Se la definissimo la donna della cucina italiana, ci risponderebbe?

Che ho una grandissima passione per la cucina, gli ho dedicato tanto e ho avuto tante soddisfazioni nella mia carriera…ma non mi piace parlare di me.

Possiamo fare questa domanda ai miei collaboratori?

La filosofia alla base della sua cucina?

Grande materia prima, cucina solare, accostamenti giusti. Pochi ingredienti che riescano ad esaltare al meglio i sapori. Una cucina equilibrata, ma con contrasti.

Il sapore più legato alla sua infanzia?

Quello del latte di pecora. Sono nata in una famiglia di agricoltori e la cosa che mi manca di più della mia infanzia sono le serate passate a fare la trasformazione del latte: dal latte accagliato al cuculo, dalla ricotta allo scottino…ero ghiotta di questi sapori.

Quali sono i sapori autentici della costa?

Il nostro pesce, i piatti della tradizione: bottarga, anguilla, cacciucco, triglie alla livornese.

La sua destinazione imperdibile della costa toscana.

Sono due. Per riposarmi l’Argentario e per cena La Pineta di Luciano Zazzeri.

I piatti dell’autunno 2015.

Lumache in brodo di funghi porcini con cialda al bergamotto. Piccione con toni di rosso e cenere di cipolla. Ravioli di porcini e sambuco con animelle di vitella. Zampette di maiale con seppie e granita di cedro.

If we defined you as the woman of Italian cuisine, how would you respond?

That I have a great passion for cooking. I have devoted so much to it and my career has been very satisfying, but I do not like talking about myself. Can we ask my co-workers this question?

The philosophy behind your recipes?

Great raw ingredients, a bright kitchen, correct pairings. Just a few ingredients that can bring out the best flavours. Balanced recipes, but with contrasts.

The flavour that you most associate with your childhood?

Goat’s milk. I was born into a family of farmers and the thing I miss the most from my childhood are the evenings spent processing milk: from curdled milk to the Cuculo (traditional Calabrian recipe), from ricotta to bread and scottino cheese. I was fond of these all these flavours.

What are the authentic flavours of the coast?

Our fish, the traditional dishes: fish eggs, eel, fish soup, Livornese mullet.

Badia di Morrona. Tra vigneti e oliveti di altissimo livello Amidst the best vineyards and olive groves Cosa rappresenta per lei il concetto di Terroir?

L’insieme irripetibile delle peculiarità micro pedoclimatiche di un’area più o meno ristretta che caratterizzano in modo indiscutibile qualunque vitigno coltivato.

I vini del territorio di Terricciola, in pochi aggettivi?

Nel nostro caso abbiamo vari tipi di terroir alcuni danno finezza ed eleganza, altri struttura e longevità ed è dal blend delle uve dei vari vigneti che otteniamo il nostro prodotto finale.

Il suo abbinamento preferito tra un vino di Terricciola e un piatto della tradizione locale?

Sono un appassionato di caccia e quindi consiglio il cinghiale con il Sangiovese (tipo il nostro VignaAlta). Se poi aprite una bottiglia del nostro Chianti I Sodi del Paretaio potete apprezzarlo con qualunque piatto del territorio.

La vostra filosofia produttiva?

Vigneti e oliveti al massimo livello qualitativo, selezione delle uve, rispetto dell’ambiente sia nella fase produttiva di uve e olive sia in cantina e frantoio. In poche parole il nostro obbiettivo è produrre vini che esprimono al meglio il territorio dal quale provengono.

Il suo maestro nel mondo del vino?

Chiunque si sia dedicato con passione a questo meraviglioso mondo, così come mi ha insegnato mio padre che ha investito tanto tempo nel far diventare Badia di Morrona la realtà che è oggi.

What does the concept of terroir represent for you?

It is the uniqueness of the peculiar micro climates distinguishing an area, large or small, that characterise whatever vine is cultivated there.

The wines of Terricciola, with very few adjectives?

In our case, we have various types of terroir: some give refinement and elegance, others structure and longevity. We obtain our final products by blending the grapes of different vineyards.

Your favourite match of a Terricciola wine with a traditional local dish?

I’m a passionate hunter so I suggest boar with a Sangiovese, like our VignaAlta. If you open a bottle of our Chianti I Sodi del Paretaio, you will enjoy it with any dish of our territory.

Your production philosophy?

Vineyards and olive groves of the best possible quality, grape selection, environmental respect in all grape and olive production phases, in the wine cellar and the olive press. In short, our aim is to make wines that best represent the territory where they are born.

Your maestro in the world of wine?

Everyone who has dedicated themselves with passion to this wonderful world, as my father taught me. He invested much time to make Badia di Morrona what it is today.

Un grande evento a Firenze che riunisce AIS Toscana, grandi chef e tante eccellenze enogastronomiche del nostro paese A grand event in Florence will unite AIS Toscana, great chefs and many marvellous Italian wine and food specialities 5 mila visitatori, circa 200 sommelier Ais, oltre 1.500 cuochi, tra i quali oltre venti stellati, 150 aziende vitivinicole in degustazione e altrettante legate ai settori del beverage e del food, oltre 30 ore di cooking show con i migliori cuochi italiani, e ancora dibattiti, convegni e approfondimenti per avvicinare il consumatore al mondo dell’agroalimentare italiano con una formula mai sperimentata prima: sono questi i numeri Food and Wine in Progress, il grande evento che si svolgerà alla Stazione Leopolda di Firenze dall’8 all’11 novembre 2015. Fulcro della kermesse il XXIII Congresso Nazionale della Federazione Italiana Cuochi (promosso anche da Unione regionale cuochi toscani) che per la prima volta apre al pubblico e si sposa con AIS – che per l’occasione porta alla Leopolda in anticipo sulle date consuete la manifestazione L’Eccellenza di Toscana - e Cocktail in the world. Una occasione unica per capire dall’esterno la passione e la professionalità che ruotano intorno al cibo.

“E’ per la nostra Associazione un onore essere presente in qualità di partner ad un evento così importante per il mondo del food&beverage - sottolinea il Presidente di AIS Toscana Osvaldo Baroncelli - e il coinvolgimento di AIS è la testimonianza di come sempre più si cerchi di presentare un’offerta all inclusive a tavola: cibo e vino sono due elementi complementari tra loro e come per sublimare un piatto è necessario l’abbinamento con il vino giusto, così ogni vino richiede un proprio spazio, per raccontare i territori di cui si fa ambasciatore. Nell’ottica di esaltare le nostre eccellenze non si può quindi prescindere l’uno dall’altro, anzi è auspicabile che iniziative come questa, in cui cibo e vino si incontrano per valorizzarsi a vicenda, possano trovare sempre maggiore spazio”.

Five thousand visitors, about two hundred AIS sommeliers, over one thousand five hundred chefs, including twenty known for their stars, one hundred fifty wineries exhibiting, another one hundred fifty firms linked to the food and beverage sectors, over thirty hours of cooking shows with the best Italian chefs, plus debates, seminars and presentations to bring the world of Italian food and wine much closer to consumers with a formula never seen before. These are the numbers of Food and Wine in Progress, the grand event that will take place at Stazione Leopolda in Florence, 8-10 November 2015.

The 23rd National Congress of the Italian Cooks Federation is the principal promoter of the festival, with the support of the Regional Union of Tuscan Cooks. For the first time in its history, the congress will be open to the public and join forces with AIS – which will stage its well-known event, Excellence in Tuscany, prior to the usual dates – and Cocktail in the World. It will be a unique opportunity to perceive the passion and expertise of the people whose professions orbit around food.

“It is an honour for our Association to be a partner in such a prestigious event for the world of Food & Beverage”, says Osvaldo Baroncelli, chairman of the AIS chapter in Tuscany. “The participation of AIS is a demonstration of how important it is today to present an all-inclusive proposal for the table. Food and wine are complementary elements. Just as the right wine can make a dish sublime, so each wine demands its own space to introduce the territory for which it is the ambassador.

With the intention to increment appreciation for our exceptional food and drink delights, neither can be taken for granted. To the contrary, we hope that there will soon be many more events of this kind, where food and drink meet to heighten mutual enjoyment”.

Il Miglior Sommelier della Toscana: uno degli eventi di una serata con ottimi spumanti in riva al mare Best Sommelier in Tuscany was one of the events of an evening at the seaside dedicated to excellent spumante wines Professionalità e cultura del vino: sono questi i valori emersi durante il Concorso Miglior Sommelier della Toscana vinto dal fiorentino Andrea Galanti nel corso dell’evento “Spumanti in Versilia” organizzato da Ais Toscana ad inizio estate a Lido di Camaiore nei giardini del Park Hotel Villa Ariston. L’appuntamento, un aperitivo gastronomico con tasting delle migliori bollicine italiane prodotte con Metodo Classico e Metodo Charmat, ha coinvolto numerosi ospiti e appassionati di vino. Preziose produzioni gastronomiche artigianali toscane e le degustazioni di spumanti hanno interessato gli ospiti nell’elegante cornice della Villa a due passi dal mare. Tra le iniziative che hanno riscontrato il maggior successo il mini corso, denominato wine school, dedicato ai neofiti della sommelierie della durata di mezz’ora - tenuto da Paolo Bini, degustatore ufficiale AIS - per acquisire le regole fondamentali su come degustare un vino e in particolare le bollicine italiane e la degustazione guidata dal delegato AIS di Firenze e Membro della Commissione Didattica nazionale AIS Massimo Castellani e da Luigi Pizzolato, delegato della Val d’Elsa e Vice Presidente AIS Toscana.

Altro importante momento della giornata, il passaggio della staffetta del Tastevin commemorativo - in argento cesellato e intarsiato di ametista rosata a forma di grappoli - per i 50 anni dell’Associazione Italiana Sommelier, con AIS Toscana che lo ha consegnato ad Ais Marche nel cammino che lo porterà fino a Milano, dove sarà celebrato in autunno il congresso nazionale AIS. Grande interesse per il concorso di Miglior Sommelier AIS della Toscana 2015, riservato a sommelier professionisti, vinto da Andrea Galanti, sommelier della delegazione di Firenze. La proclamazione è arrivata al termine del serrato confronto finale che ha visto contrapporsi al vincitore il livornese Massimo Tortora e un altro fiorentino, Iacopo Tonelli. Un appuntamento consolidato, quello dell’elezione del Miglior Sommelier di AIS Toscana in Versilia e una vetrina che ha dimostrato di portare fortuna ai vincitori: molti di loro infatti hanno ottenuto ottimi riconoscimenti nei concorsi nazionali e internazionali. Tutti i tre finalisti dell’edizione 2015 hanno infatti già un curriculum importante nel mondo dei concorsi AIS e questo conferma l’elevato livello di preparazione dei concorrenti grazie alla Scuola Concorsi guidata da Simona Bizzarri.

Professionalism and wine culture: the values expressed by the Best Sommelier of Tuscany Competition, won by Florentine Andrea Galanti during the event “Sparkling Wines in Versilia” organized by the AIS Toscana in the garden of the Park Hotel Villa Ariston in Lido di Camaiore. This happy hour event with tasting of the best Italian sparkling wines made via Classic Method or Charmat Method involved numerous guests and wine enthusiasts. Accompanied by hand-made food of the typical Tuscan tradition, the tasting of sparkling wines kept on interesting all guests in the elegant location of Villa Ariston, just a few steps from the sea. Among the most successful initiatives: Wine School, the 30-minute short course dedicated to those who approach the Sommellerie world for the first time - held by AIS official Sommelier Paolo Bini -, which teaches the basic rules for wine tasting; and the tasting experience guided by Massimo Castellani, AIS Delegate for Florence and Member of the AIS National Didactic Commission, and Luigi Pizzolato, AIS Delegate for Colle Val d’Elsa and AIS Tuscany Vice President. Another important moment of the event was the passage of the ‘relay’- the commemorative Tastevin in chiseled silver inlaid with bunch-shaped rose amethyst - for the 50th anniversary of the Italian Sommelier Association AIS, with AIS Toscana delivering it to AIS Marche, which will continue until the last stop in Milan, where the AIN National Congress will be celebrated next Autumn. People showed great interest for the Best Sommelier of Tuscany 2015 Competition, reserved for professional sommeliers and won by Andrea Galanti of the AIS Delegation of Florence. The announcement was made at the end of the intense final section between Andrea Galanti, Massimo Tortora from Livorno and Iacopo Tonelli, he too from Florence. The election of the AIS Best Sommelier of Tuscany in Versilia is a consolidated event, as well as a showcase which has turned out to bring good luck to the competition’s winners: many of them, indeed, have received important acknowledgements in both national and international competitions. All the three finalists of the 2015 edition have been given important recognitions in AIS competitions, and this a further confirmation of the high level of preparation given to participants by the Competition School leaded by Simona Bizzarri.

I vini della costa toscana protagonisti di una degustazione d’eccezione a Castagneto Carducci Wines from the Tuscany coast were the protagonists of a special tasting at Castagneto Carducci Vini della Costa Toscana protagonisti a Castagneto Carducci della prima edizione di T-Wine: l’esclusivo tasting organizzato dall’Associazione Italiana Sommelier Toscana in collaborazione con la delegazione AIS di Livorno e la Strada del vino e dell›Olio Costa degli Etruschi, domenica 31 maggio a Casone Ugolino ha presentato agli enoappassionati 186 etichette di 49 produttori del territorio di Terratico di Bibbona, Montescudaio, Bolgheri, Val di Cornia e Isola d’Elba. Un evento pensato in un territorio esclusivo per promuovere in una cornice di prestigio i vini del territorio al centro dell’attenzione di un pubblico sempre più esigente ed attento alle tipicità del vino italiano, fatto di banchi d’assaggio di vino, olio e food tipico del territorio a cui si sono aggiunti l’AIS Tutor con Stefano Sandrucci, sommelier professionista che ha guidato i visitatori alla scoperta dei vini più rappresentativi o l’AIS Wine School per i neofiti della sommellerie, che hanno potuto in questo modo acquisire le prime regole fondamentali per degustare un vino. O ancora la degustazione guidata da Cristiano Cini, Maurizio Zanolla e da Massimo Tortora dal titolo “Racconto del territorio attraverso le sue diverse eccellenze” e la presentazione de “Il Territorio e le sue eccellenze” con uno special guest: Luciano Zazzeri chef de La Pineta di Marina di Bibbona. Tra gli ospiti anche il fotografo Oliviero Toscani e un momento di puro spettacolo con i Cavalieri di Maremma e quelli di Dimensione Maremma si sono esibiti in “TransuMare”: il cammino tra città e campagne toscane da ripercorrere con i ritmi della natura “, una performance italo francese con butteri, guardians, puledri e vacche maremmane.

La location di Casone Ugolino, destinata a diventare un punto di riferimento per i vini della Costa Toscana con questo appuntamento che avrà cadenza annuale, ha aperto le porte al pubblico per la prima volta in occasione della degustazione di AIS Toscana, presentando non solo la parte della Bolgheri e Costa Toscana Wine & Food Farm, ma anche il Museo Multimediale del Vino che sarà ospitato nei locali del complesso, dove trovano collocazione oltre settanta installazioni sensoriali, olografiche ed interattive per meglio conoscere e scoprire le realtà storiche di Bolgheri e della Costa Toscana. Dall’autunno vi si terranno anche corsi AIS.

Wines from the Tuscan coastal area in Castagneto Carducci for the first edition of T-Wine: on Sunday the 31st of May at the Casone Ugolino, the exclusive tasting event organized by the Associazione Italiana Sommelier Toscana in collaboration with the AIS Delegation of Livorno and the Strada del Vino e dell’Olio Costa degli Etruschi Consortium, presented to all wine lovers 186 labels by 49 producers from the areas of Terratico di Bibbona, Montescudaio, Bolgheri, Cornia Valley and Elba Island. An event conceived in an exclusive territory, aimed at promoting the wines of the territory in a prestigious location to a public that is ever more demanding and interested in the typical features of Italian wines: there wine, olive oil and food tasting stalls (with typical local products), AIS Tutor with professional Sommeliers who guided visitors to the discovery of the most typical wines and the AIS Wine School, thanks to which those who wanted to approach the Sommellerie world could learn the first basic rules related to wine tasting. Then, the tasting experience “The History Of The Territory Through Its Top Quality Products” guided by Cristiano Cini and Maurizio Zanolla”, and the presentation of “The Territory And Its Top Local Products” with Luciano Zazzeri, Chef at La Pineta in Marina di Bibbona, as special guest.

Among the guests also photographer Oliviero Toscani, and the equestrian event “TransuMare: Walking Through The Cities and Farmlands Of Tuscany By The Rhythm Of Nature” with Cavalieri di Maremma and Dimensione Maremma: a French-Italian performance with Butteri, Guardians, foals and cows from the Maremma region. The location of Casone Ugolino, which is destined to become a reference place for the wines of the Tuscan Coast thanks to this event that will be held every year from now, opened its doors to the public for the first time in occasion of the tasting event organized by AIS Toscana and presented, beside the Bolgheri and the Costa Toscana Wine & Food Farm, also the Museo Multimediale del Vino, which will be hosted inside the building. There, over seventy sensory, holographic and interactive installations will help visitors discover the historic realities of Bolgheri and the Tuscan Coast.

Terra e famiglia

Sono i fattori indispensabili di PFV, l’alleanza delle dinastie del vino che quest’anno si sono riunite da Antinori a Firenze These are the main requisites for PFV, the association of the top winemaking families who gathered this year at Antinori’s winery in Florence Era il 1991 quando una conversazione tra Robert Drouhin e Miguel Torres ha dato vita a una associazione mondiale tra le 11 famiglie più importanti del vino: stessa ricerca dell’eccellenza, comunità di intenti e una forte analogia anche nei problemi da affrontare sono stati i cardini su cui basare Primum Familiae Vini. Più conosciuta con l’acronimo PFV, l’associazione non nasce come autocelebrazione ma si occupa di business e tecnologia, tradizione e innovazione. Insomma persegue quei fattori indispensabili per creare oggi come ieri i migliori vini del mondo. Ogni anno nel mese di luglio, i membri PFV si incontrano insieme nel paese della presidenza in carica. Nel 2015 è Antinori ha aver ospitato la riunione annuale PFV a Firenze. Durante questi incontri si riuniscono tutti i membri dell’associazione, le loro famiglie allargate, e alcuni dei loro team di gestione, per condividere le migliori prassi, discutere gli sviluppi nel mondo del vino, e concordare le attività per il prossimo anno. Così è stato anche a Bargino quest’estate: 80 persone, 3 generazioni per ogni dinastia. Il più piccolo si chiama Giulio, ha meno di un anno e un destino che si legge nel cognome, Antinori. Non ha certamente capito a cosa ha partecipato insieme a un folto gruppetto di vivaci coetanei, né che sua mamma, Alessia Antinori, è anche il Presidente di PFV per il 2015. Lui ha giocato soprattutto, fra una cena e una degustazione. La Baronessa Rothschild, scomparsa poco tempo fa, diceva” siamo la terra che rappresentiamo”. Famiglia e vigna sono una cosa sola: per questo quando Mondavi ha ceduto l’azienda al Fondo Constellation è venuto meno il requisito fondamentale per stare in PFV e le famiglie- membro sono rimaste in 11.

I temi fondamentali quando si incontrano sono due: il mercato, con strategie condivise in tema distribuzione e reciproco sostegno – chi conosce meglio un territorio o un paese si mette al servizio degli altri – e la beneficienza, che permette di raccogliere cifre considerevoli. E’ di questi giorni un altro appuntamento che vede come main stage ancora gli splendidi spazi della Cantina Antinori a Bargino: un’ esposizione temporanea nell’ambito della piattaforma Antinori Art Project su uno dei temi portanti della storia dell’arte, la natura morta. Still-Life Remix. 26 artisti contemporanei reinterpretano la natura morta - è questo il titolo della mostra che sarà visibile fino al 4 ottobre – è un excursus contemporaneo dedicato a un genere pittorico antico che suscita ancora l’interesse degli artisti. In contemporanea a Firenze, a Palazzo Antinori, fino al 31 ottobre, la storica famiglia del vino italiana racconta in nella mostra “futuro antico” la propria storia di vinattieri attraverso i secoli, dal 1385, nel passaggio di 26 generazioni, un modo per avvicinare il pubblico alla cultura del vino attraverso gli occhi di chi ne ha fatto l’emblema della propria vita.

It was 1991 when a conversation between Robert Drouhin and Miguel Torres brought to the creation of an international association of the 11 top winemaking families: the same search for excellency, the same proposals and approach to the problems of the sector were what Primum Familiae Vini was based on. Best known as PFV, the association has no self-celebratory purpose, since it deals with business and technology, tradition and innovation, acutally focusing on the factors that are essential, tody as in the past, for the production of the best wines in the world. Every year in July, all PFV members gather in the current Presidency country. In 2015 it was Antinori that hosted the annual PFV gathering in Florence. During these occasions, all the association’s members, with their families and some of their managing team, meet to talk about the best procedures taken, to discuss the development of the wine sector and to decide the projects for the following year. This happened in Bargino this Summer too: 80 people, 3 generations per family. The youngest participant was Giulio, less than one year old and a destiny linked to his family name, Antinori. He was surely not aware of the event he took part to with a wide group of baby participants, as he couldn’t know that his mother, Alessia Antinori, is also PFV President for 2015. He played for most of the time, between a dinner and a tasting. Recently passed away Baroness Philippine de Rotschild used to say: “We are the land we represent”. Family and vineyard are as one thing: that is why the Mondavi winery became subsidiary of Constellation the main requisite to belong to PFV was not satisfied anymore and the family members became 11. The main topic discussed when they meet are: the market with their shared strategies concerning both distribution and mutual support -those who bet know a territory or a country stay at the others’ disposal- and donation, thanks to which significant sums can be raised. Another event is currently taking place in the wonderful spaces of the Cantina Antinori in Bargino: a temporary exhibition promoted by the Antinori Art Project and focused on one of the main subject matters in the history of art: still life. Still-Life Remix. 26 Contemporary Artists Reinterpret The Still Life Theme -this is the tite of the exhibition that will be on show until next October the 4th – is a contemporary exhibition dedicated to an historical painting theme that still gains the interest of artists. During the same period, the Italian historical family Antinori, whose name has always been related to wine, tells, in the exhibition “Ancient Future” (until the 31st of October at Palazzo antinori in Florence), their history as a wine-making family since 1385 through the centuries and 26 generations.

This wants to be a way of letting the public know about the culture of wine from the point of view of those who has made it the symbol of their lives.

UN’OTTIMA ANNATA 2010 in Toscana attraverso le 10 migliori etichette 2010 in Tuscany revealed in the top ten labels

Toscana. Annata 2010. Un inverno freddo, ma così freddo da essere degno di cotanto nome.

Nel cuore della regione, le temperature vicine allo zero, lasciano il passo a fresche e piovose giornate primaverili, meno male che anche il binomio agosto/settembre registra medie al di sotto, anch’esse, di quelle stagionali.

Di fatto si sono viste annate più facili nel portare a corretta maturazione il Sangiovese.

Eppure è in situazioni come queste, che l’esperienza di un vignaiolo si manifesta, ad esempio, contrastando l’eccessivo sviluppo vegetativo di inizio estate, ma anche operando esigenti selezioni dei grappoli in epoca vendemmiale. Allora per dirlo all’Alsaziana “piccoli volumi e grande qualità”.

In the heart of the Tuscan region, after the temperatures close to zero degrees , fresh and rainy spring days occurred, and it was good than the temperatures during the August and September too were lower than the average ones for that period.

There have been more favorable years for the maturation of Sangiovese grspes, in fact. Yet, it is in situations like these that vine growers show their experience, by suppressing excessive vegetative growth of the first summer months for example, but also making a rigorous selection of the grapes during the harvesting period. As you can hear in Alsace, “small volumes for a great quality”. Let’s start our walk through Tuscany in Montepulciano with its Prugnolo Gentile, and we find the wine com-

dal suo prugnolo gentile, con le aziende Salcheto e Le Berne ed i loro Vino Nobile 2010, nasi con accenni di surmaturazione che ricordano l’amarena, un palato ricco nel volume liquido, pieno e succoso, vini carnosi e di sostanza, convincenti al momento ma ancora desiderosi di crescere. Basta spostarsi di una trentina di Km ed ecco Montalcino con il suo sfavillante Brunello 2010, l’annata del decennio?, l’annata del trentennio?, l’annata di sempre? Risponde al quesito un mio amico ilcinese, di nome Luciano che di rossi se ne intende e dice: “E’ semplicemente l’annata che vorremmo si ripetesse ogni anno, acidità significative, fenoliche perfette omaggianti tannini in grande spolvero e strutture adeguate, ovvero vini infiniti che miglioreranno invecchiando”.

Insomma, fantastica, tra le tante da prendere in seria considerazione, le cantine Tiezzi e Fattoi.

Il Chianti Classico ha regalato vini freschi, scorrevoli, con tannini dolci come le colline intorno a Gaiole.

Proprio lì, sono da provare la Riserva di Capannelle e l’Annata di Riecine.

panies Salcheto and Le Berne with their 2010 Vino Nobile: the nose reveals scents of overmaturation that remind to black cherries, the palate is rich in the liquid and juicy and tasty; full, rich wines with a convincing taste and a promising potential.

Just about 30 Kilometers away is Montalcino with its extraordinary 2010 Brunello..The best year of the decade? Of the last thirty years? Of ever?

A friend of mine from Montalcino, Luciano, who is also an expert of red wines, answers my question and says: “We just wish we had years like this every year: not lacking in acidity, perfect phenol concentration, intense tannins at their best and very well structured, meaning never-ending wines that get better with time”.

In other words, a really great year. Among the wine cellars worth considering are the Tiezzi and Fattoi.

The Chianti Classico has produced fresh, smooth wines with tannins as sweet as the hills around Gaiole. Exactly there, don’t miss the Riserva di Capannelle and the Riecine’s Annata.

Unexpectedly, some pronounced acidity is to be found in the

Concludiamo con il crinale appenninico che dal Mugello scorre sino all’alto Casentino. Sconosciute terre da vino fino a poche lune fa, ormai madre di caratteristici ed eleganti Pinot nero, su tutti Podere della Civettaja con uno dei più eleganti e tipici rossi Italiani da uvaggio borgognone, che ha risvegliato dal letargo la terra casentinese creando subbuglio e sano fermento.

Come compagno di viaggio scegliamo il Ventisei della azienda agricola Il Rio, con la convinzione di poter parlare del Pinot nero toscano, oserei un finalmente.

In this area, the very interesting Tam produced by Batzella and, a little to the south, Bulichella’s Hide in Suvereto. Let’s now conclude with the Apennine crest that runs from Mugello to High Casentino. This wine region, unknown until recently, is now famous for its distinguishing and elegant Pinot nero wines, the most famous of which is produced by Podere della Civettaia: one of the most elegant and typical Italian red wines made using Burgundy grapes, it has contributed to the rediscovery of the Casentino region, creating some uproar and healthy turmoil. And after having named another wine of equal importance, the Ventisei, produced by the estate Il Rio, I think we could, I would say finally, say we have our Tuscan Pinot nero wines.

La Costa Toscana attraverso le esperienze eccellenti di aziende nate negli ultimi quindici anni Positive results for young companies on the Tuscany coast Un viaggio alla scoperta della Costa Toscana attraverso le esperienze eccellenti e i vini di aziende con meno di quindici-dieci anni. Un itinerario da nord a sud attraversando le province di Massa, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno e Grosseto passando dai bianchi delle Apuane ai grandi rossi della Maremma, dalla viticoltura eroica sulle isole e sulle colline del Candia alle aziende gioiello che si sono sviluppate per mano di grandi investitori stranieri e italiani provenienti, molto spesso, da universi extra settore, fino a un distretto – ormai lo possiamo definire proprio così - dove la filosofia e la pratica della cultura biodinamica ha preso piede e sta cominciando a dare ottimi risultati. L’editore Panerai a Rocca di Frassinello, a Gavorrano. Terenzi: da Milano alla Maremma. Georg Weber, classe 1978, dalla Germania ai piedi di Capalbio con Monteverro.

Top experience recenti per data di nascita, molte delle quali hanno già scalato con successo il mercato internazionale, altre sono certamente meno note al grande pubblico ma proprio per questo meritevoli della nostra attenzione.

Questi sono territori che vantano anche alcune tra le più belle cantine non della Toscana, ma di tutto il mondo, realizzate da archistar come Gae Aulenti, Mario Botta, Renzo Piano (Petra, Rocca di Frassinello, Campo di Sasso, Ca’ Marcanda, Le Mortelle, Tenuta dell’Ammiraglia, ColleMassari) che tanto hanno contribuito a creare la fama e l’immagine di questi areali costieri e delle loro produzioni vitivinicole e che vale la pena conoscere e visitare. Ma sono anche i territori dove, proprio in questi ultimi anni, i nuovi interventi o le azioni di ripristino perseguono la filosofia della massima modernità e funzionalità dentro e della conservazione fuori.

A trip to discover the excellent wines and experiences of wineries established in the last 10-15 years along the coast of Tuscany The northsouth itinerary passes through the provinces of Massa, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto, from white wines of the Apuan Alps to the great red wines of Maremma, from heroic viticulture on the islands and the hills of Candia to the jewel wineries developed with the assistance of important foreign investors or Italians from completely different sectors, finally arriving in what we may legitimately call a district where the philosophy and practical application of the biodynamic culture has taken hold and is beginning to produce excellent results. Here are some examples: the duo Tipa-Bertarelli in Bolgheri and Montecucco; the Fratini’s, fashion entrepreneurs also in Bolgheri; the Lunelli’s, alias bubbly Ferrari, at Podernovo near Terriciola; and Moretti (but mainly a builder) at Petra near Suvereto. Caiarossa near Riparbella: he is a Dutch gentleman, but with the experience of two Grand Crus Classés in Bordeaux, Château Giscours and Château du Tertre. The best of recent experiences by date of debut, many of which have already climbed to success on the international market. Others are undoubtedly less well known to the public, but worthy of our attention precisely for this reason.

These territories can boast some of the finest wine cellars in the world, not only of Tuscany, designed by star architects such as Gae Aulenti, Mario Botta and Renzo Piano (Petra, Rocca di Frassinello, Campo di Sasso, Ca’ Marcanda, Le Mortelle, Tenuta dell’Ammiraglia and ColleMassari) that have contributed so much to the fame and image of these coastal areas and their wine production. Time invested getting to know the wines and visiting the estates is well spent. There are also territories where, in recent years, new actions and recovery of bygone systems apply a philosophy that aims for the greatest possible internal modernity while maintaining a conservative exterior.

L’indirizzo strategico. Oggi la nostra missione è il turismo enogastronomico e il turismo in generale e il territorio per comprensori vasti. In questo momento non c’è più nessuno da un punto di vista istituzionale che se ne occupa in modo concreto.

Dai cipressi di Bolgheri all’Isola d’Elba, come si riesce a promuovere un territorio così ampio? È facile promuovere un territorio ampio, è difficile promuovere un territorio piccolo, noi promuoviamo la costa, il termine costa è uguale in tutte le lingue del mondo, abbinato a Toscana, il messaggio è chiaro.

Oggi quali sono gli obiettivi?

Promuovere la costa toscana nei suoi diversi aspetti e quello che li accumuna: il territorio, il vino, il buon vivere.

Avere nel ‘portafoglio’ la Doc Bolgheri quanto è stato utile per tutta la zona? È la Doc di traino, ed è come per la Doc Bolgheri avere un vino che si chiama Sassicaia. E’ un grande motore, è un richiamo e un valore, un tempo lo è stato il Carducci.

Quali progetti per il futuro?

Far percepire ai produttori ed anche ai Comuni, che troppo spesso sono orientati sul proprio piccolo territorio, l’importanza del coordinamento di una offerta turistica. E’ dura.

Twenty years of activity with Strada del Vino: now what has changed?

Our strategic approach. Today we are focused on food and wine tourism, tourism in general and the territory on wide areas. No institution is actually dealing with this task in a concrete way right now.

From the cypresses of Bolgheri to the Elba Island, how do you manage to promote such a wide territory?

It is easier to promote a wide territory than a small territory. We promote the coastal area: the word ‘coast’ is similar in many languages, and if you associate it to Tuscany, everybody will know what we are talking of.

What are the objectives of the Consortium?

To promote both the various aspects of the Tuscan coast and what they have in common: the territory, the wine, a good life style.

How much has it been useful for the whole area to include also the DOC Bolgheri region?

It is the leading DOC region, like the Sassicaia wine for the DOC Bolgheri itself. It is a driving force, an attractive element and a value, as Carducci has once been.

What about the next objectives?

To make wine producers and Municipalities, both too often concentrated on their small territory, aware of the importance of organizing the tourism offer. It is not easy at all.

Tradizione e innovazione

Gino Carmignani, Presidente del Consorzio Vini DOC Montecarlo Quanto vale oggi la denominazione di Montecarlo DOC? Siamo 20 produttori per 300 ettari ed una produzione di circa un milione di bottiglie. L’evoluzione di questo piccolo territorio, che ha fatto tutto da solo, è iniziata negli anni Settanta, grazie al coraggio dei produttori che hanno puntato a fare qualità. Questo è il motivo per cui avremo un futuro.

Nella scala dei valori delle Denominazioni toscane, dove si pone quella di Montecarlo?

Ai vertici dell’intelligenza manifatturiera dell’essere umano di questo territorio. E’ un piccolo antico territorio, si è evoluto proprio perché c’è una combinazione tra storia e innovazione.

Cosa può aiutare questa piccola eccellenza dell’enologia toscana a diventare ancora più famosa?

La cultura, soprattutto quella del sommelier, la nostra Doc deve molto all’associazione sommelier che io ho sempre invitato e tenuto in considerazione proprio perché è una scuola di cultura del vino.

Uno degli ultimi obiettivi raggiunti?

Dopo anni di assenza abbiamo riconquistato un mercato di alta dignità per la nostra Doc, quello della Versilia.

Quali progetti per rendere più attraente la denominazione?

Continuare a ragionare in termini culturali, il racconto è la nostra forza.

Le annate migliori degli ultimi dieci anni?

Tutte escluso il 2004 e il 2006, il 2007, il 2010 e 2014.

What is the value of a DOC Montecarlo designation today?

The Consortium includes 20 producers on 300 hectares of vineyards for a total production of around one million bottles. The growth of this small territory, which made everything by itself, started during the ‘70s, thanks to the way producers focused on wine quality. This is the reason why we will have a future.

What is the position of Montecarlo DOC in the value scale of Tuscan DOC designations?

It represents the higher level of human manufacturing skills over this territory. It is a small, ancient territory whose development was made possible only by a combination of history and innovation.

Is there something that could make this small reality in the Tuscan winemaking sector becoming even more famous?

Culture, above all the one Sommeliers have. Our DOC region owes a lot to the Sommelier Association which I have always invited and given the highest consideration because of its importance as a school of wine culture.

One of the last objectives achieved?

After years of absence from Versilia, a market of the highest importance for our DOC region, we have finally entered it once more.

Some projects aimed at making your designation more attractive?

Keeping on focusing on culture, since narration is the greatest strength we have.

The best years over the last decade?

All years excluding 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2014.

Lo sguardo fuori dai confini

Giuseppe Mantellassi, Presidente del Consorzio Morellino di Scansano Quali sono gli elementi che fanno eccellere il vostro vino?

La nostra è una zona vocata molto bene al vino grazie al microclima e tante aziende hanno investito sul territorio contribuendo così anche ad aumentare la qualità del prodotto.

Qual è l’ingrediente per un ottimo Morellino?

Controllare bene la maturazione delle uve. Soprattutto in un’annata come questa, così calda e arida, bisognerà fare un lavoro attento per salvaguardare quantità e qualità.

Quali sono gli ultimi obiettivi raggiunti?

Voglio guardare a quelli ancora da raggiungere, che sono tanti.

Soprattutto è necessario far conoscere il Morellino di Scansano all’estero, perché in Italia è molto noto ma fuori dai nostri confini è quasi sconosciuto.

In questo senso Expo 2015 può darvi una mano?

A Milano hanno voluto fare tante cose e alla fine è venuto fuori un impegno molto oneroso. Noi abbiamo fatto il minimo indispensabile per esserci ma non credo che sia il miglior veicolo di promozione possibile.

Quindi quali sono i primi futuri passi da presidente?

Proprio portare il Morellino di Scansano all’attenzione dei consumatori esteri. Per farlo abbiamo deciso di creare un ufficio stampa che ci aiuti in questa operazione di marketing e promozione.

What are the elements that contribute to the high quality of your wine?

Our territory is particularly suitable for wine production thanks to the microclimate; many companies have invested here, thus contributing to the growth of the final product’s quality.

What is the crucial ingredient in a good Morellino?

To monitor the maturation of grapes. Above all in a year like this, so hot and dry, an attentive work aimed at preserving both the quantity and the quality of the product will be of crucial importance.

The last objectives you have achieved?

I would rather think of the many things I still want to achieve.

Above all, we need to make the Morellino di Scansano reach foreign markets, since it is very famous in Italy but almost unknown abroad.

Could Milan Expo 205 help in this sense?

They wanted to do a lot of things in Milan and it has been such an heavy task in fact. We did what we could to be there but I don’t think this is be the best way of promoting our product.

So what will be your next steps as President?

To make foreign consumers aware of the importance of the Morellino di Scansano. In order to do this, we have created a press office that would help us with this marketing and promotion operation.

Starting from the border with Liguria, we discover territories that are quite variegated and unusual due to the vicinity of the Apuan Alps. There are peaks up to 2000 metres and the sea washing up on sandy beaches. This area has rediscovered some indigenous vines recently such as Massaretta, Barsaglina and Vermentino Nero by wineries such as Cima in Massa, Terenzuola in Fosdinovo, Calevro in Massa, Terre Apuane in Carrara, Castagnini in Carrara and Monastero dei Frati Bianchi in Fivizzano. Among the wineries that have grown in this territory over the past ten years, exercising their heroic version of viticulture, literally stripping the grapes from the mountains and the sea to offer extraordinary wines, special mention is due to Luigi Pucci’s Le Canne, assisted by the oenologist Giorgio Baccigalupi, as is Castel del Piano; to Giuseppe Balestra’s Belmesseri; to Francesco di Pietro Mosti’s L’Aurora with oenologist Marco Raffaelli; to Antonio Farina’s Fedespina; and to Alberto Tommasina’s Tenuta Lodolina. Recently, some wineries such as Cima with San Lorenzo Bianco, Calevro with Le Viole (white) and Rosé from Massaretta, and Tenuta Lodolina with Emilius (white), have obtained noteworthy results in the production of Charmat method spumante wines.

Partiamo dal confine con la Liguria, alla scoperta di territori variegati e atipici per la vicinanza delle Alpi Apuane con vette fino 2000 mt, e il mare che bagna il litorale sabbioso. Questo areale ha assistito di recente alla riscoperta di vitigni autoctoni come il Massaretta o Barsaglina e il Vermentino Nero da parte di aziende come Cima a Massa, Terenzuola a Fosdinovo, Calevro a Massa, Terre Apuane a Carrara, Castagnini a Carrara e Monastero dei Frati Bianchi a Fivizzano. Tra le aziende che nell’ultimo decennio si sono sviluppate in questo territorio dove una viticoltura eroica, strappata alle montagne e al mare, offre vini straordinari meritano una menzione speciale Le Canne di Luigi Pucci seguita dall’enologo Giorgio Baccigalupi come anche Castel del Piano, Belmesseri di Giuseppe Balestra, L’Aurora di Francesco di Pietro Mosti con l’enologo Marco Raffaelli, l’Azienda Fedespina di Antonio Farina, la Tenuta Lodolina di Alberto Tommasina. Nella produzione di spumanti con metodo charmat si sono distinte recentemente aziende come Cima con il San Lorenzo Bianco, Calevro con Le Viole (bianco) e Rosé da uve Massaretta, l’Emilius (bianco) della Tenuta Lodolina.

DOC Colline Lucchesi e DOC Montecarlo Il territorio della provincia di Lucca è diviso in due denominazione la DOC Colline Lucchesi e la DOC Montecarlo. La grande distinzione è che quasi tutte le aziende delle Colline Lucchesi hanno strizzato l’occhio alla conduzione biodinamica: aziende che hanno poco più che un decennio di vita, guidate da giovani enologi e giovani proprietari che hanno optato per condurre le vigne con i principi di Steiner. Per questo Lucca, a livello italiano, è la zona più altamente concentrata di aziende biodinamiche, tanto che chi in Italia guarda a questo tipo di conduzione agricola si rivolge ai lucchesi come ad un distretto. L’azienda leader, pioniera di questa filosofia è la Tenuta di Valgiano, nel capannorese, anche sulla spinta del suo enologo Saverio Petrilli (il loro cru omonimo si aggira intorno ai 60 euro la bottiglia). La seconda è Fabbrica di San Martino, terza Podere Concori praticamente in Garfagnana, poi Tenuta Maria Teresa (che ha quasi terminato il processo di riconversione), Calafata nata con i principi della biodinamica da un team giovanissimo che fa parte di una associazione legata alla parrocchia del posto. In tutti questi casi, la produzione sta davvero dando prodotti raffinati.

Nella confinante DOC Montecarlo non ci sono aziende che si sono rivolte a questa filosofia, qualcuna si sta orientando verso il biologico. Negli ultimi 7-8 anni l’evento che ha caratterizzato il territorio è la trasformazione di un’azienda storica che è la Tenuta del Buonamico (che fa vino dagli anni ’60): industriali dell’olio di Lucca hanno investito in questa tenuta milioni di euro trasformandola completamente e rendendola più moderna. E questa oggi è un’azienda che dovrebbe contagiare il territorio costituito per la maggior parte da vecchi vigneron tendenzialmente restii alla modernità in senso lato.

Versilia Vale davvero una menzione di merito la Tenuta Mariani fondata da Ido Mariani nel 2005 sopra il lago di Massaciuccoli, che produce una bollicina che farà molta strada, Segreto, Brut metodo classico (Pinot Nero e Chardonney).

Colline Lucchesi DOC and Montecarlo DOC The province of Lucca is divided into two denominations, Colline Lucchesi DOC and Montecarlo DOC. The great distintion is that almost all the wineries of Colline Lucchesi have taken the biodynamic path. These wineries have more or less a decade of experience, are led by young oenologists and young owners who have chosen to manage their vines according to the principles of Steiner. For this reason, Lucca is the area of Italy with the greatest concentration of biodynamic agricultural enterprises. In fact, in Italy experts of this process consider Lucca a district. The leader and pioneer of this philosophy is Tenuta di Valgiano near Capannori, with the support of their oenologist, Saverio Petrilli. Their cru, Tenuta di Valgiano, goes for about €60 the bottle. The second was Fabbrica di San Martino, the third was Podere Concori pratically in Garfagnana, followed by Tenuta Maria Teresa, which has almost completed the reconversion process, and Calafata, born with the principles of biodynamics and a very young team, members of an association linked to the local parish. In all of these cases, production is turning out very refined products. In the adjacent Montecarlo DOC, no wineries have adopted this philosophy, although some are turning to organic. The event that has characterised this territory in the past 7-8 years is the transformation of an historic winery, Tenuta del Buonamico, which has been making wine since the 1960s. A group of oil entrepreneurs of Lucca have invested millions of euros in this estate to transform it completely and make it into a more modern enterprise. This is the company that is supposed to influence the territory to imitate its direction. The rest of the territory consists mainly of small wine-growers who are generally wary of modernity.

Versilia Tenuta Mariani, founded by Ido Mariani in 2005 above the Massaciuccoli lake, definitely merits a special mention because it produces a Tuscan spumante wine that is bound to be a great success.

TERRICCIOLA Si trova a Terricciola la proprietà del nuovo presidente della Strada del Vino delle Colline Pisane, Maurizio Iannantuono, Podere La Chiesa, dove nel 2005 nasce La Redole di Casanova, Sangiovese (80%) e Canaiolo (20%), rosso fresco, profumato e estremamente accattivante.

Aliotto e Teuto sono i due grandi vini rossi della Tenuta di Podernovo, proprietà della famiglia Lunelli, la stessa alla guida della Cantine Ferrari. Eleganti ed intensi, il primo è espressione di uno splendido uvaggio di Sangiovese, Cabernet e Merlot, il secondo è un eccellente Sangiovese quasi in purezza. Senza allontanarci troppo, troviamo l’azienda Usiglian del Vescovo, i cui vigneti comprendono, oltre al Sangiovese, varietà quali Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah e tra le bianche Chardonnay e Viognier.

Da provare Mora del Roveto, rosso morbido e avvolgente, con un finale persistente e piacevole; elegante e caratterizzato da aromi floreali, Il Ginestraio, un Igt Toscana Bianco.

MONTESCUDAIO Una scommessa vinta quella di Colline di Sopra, aperta nel 2006 sui pendii che da Montescudaio si affacciano digradando verso la Val di Cecina, un terreno che prima non aveva mai ospitato la vite. Oggi conta 5 ettari di vigneti di: Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah e Moscato Bianco.

Un’azienda che in breve tempo si è fatta conoscere per la qualità dei suoi vini.

Caiarossa dell’olandese Eric Albada Jelgersma, in Val di Cecina, produce ottimi vini rossi e bianchi biodinamici: l’omonimo Caiarossa (vino di punta), un cuvée dei migliori frutti dell’annata; Pergolaia, dominato nettamente dal Sangiovese secondo la tradizione toscana; Caiarossa Bianco, prima annata 2005 ed il vino dolce Oro di Caiarossa, una vendemmia tardiva.

A Riparbella nel 2000 nasce l’azienda Duemani, proprietà dell’enologo Luca D’Attoma e di Elena Celli. Vini eccellenti, come il Duemani (Cabernet Franc 100%), il Suisassi (Syrah 100%) e l’Altrovino (Merlot e Cabernet Franc).

Non molto distante sorge una cantina particolare che ricorda le chiese del contado toscano, quella di Pakravan Papi. Cabernet, Merlot, Sangiovese, ma anche Chardonnay e Malvasia del Chianti.

Vini di grande personalità sono quelli di Poggioventoso, figli della collaborazione di Maricia Affatato e dell’enologo Lorenzo Landi. Come Fuochi, colore rosso rubino; aromi intensi e avvolgenti di frutta rossa, con note di ribes e di ciliegia, delicate sensazioni balsamiche e speziate o Poetico, un bianco di grande seduzione, dal corpo snello e avvolgente, dotato di ottima bevibilità.

TERRICCIOLA Located in Terricciola, Podere La Chiesa belongs to the new president of the Strada del Vino delle Colline Pisane, Maurizio Iannantuono. In 2005, La Redole di Casanova was born here: Sangiovese (80%) and Canaiolo (20%), a crisp, fragrant and highly-alluring red.

Aliotto and Teuto are two of the excellent red wines made by Tenuta di Podernovo of the Lunelli family, the same family that has been overseeing the Ferrari Cellars. Elegant and intense, the first is the expression of a superb blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot; while the second is mostly a single variety, Sangiovese.

Nearby, we come to the Usiglian del Vescovo estate, whose vineyards consist of Sangiovese as well as varietals such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and whites including Chardonnay and Viognier. A must-try is Mora del Roveto, a subtle, enveloping red with a lingering, pleasant finish; elegant and characterised by floral aromas is the Tuscan IGT white Il Ginestraio.

MONTESCUDAIO Beating all odds, Colline di Sopra opened in 2006 on the downward-facing slopes that stretch from Montescudaio towards Val di Cecina, an area where grapes had never before been grown. Today it counts 5 hectares of vineyards, producing Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Muscat Blanc. In a short time, this vineyard has become known for quality.

Caiarossa of Dutchman Eric Albada Jelgersma is located in Val di Cecina and produces top red and white biodynamic wines: the same-named Caiarossa (its star wine) is a cuvée of the vintage’s best fruits; Pergolaia is distinctly dominated by Sangiovese, in keeping with the Tuscan tradition; then there’s Caiarossa Bianco, first vintage 2005; and Oro di Caiarossa, a late harvest sweet wine.

The Duemani vineyard was born in Riparbella in 2000 and is the propriety of oenologist Luca D’Attoma and Elena Celli. Excellent wines such as Duemani (Cabernet Franc 100%), Suisassi (Syrah 100%) and Altrovino (Merlot and Cabernet Franc) are made here.

Not far from here is a unique cellar that recalls the churches of the Tuscan contado, that of Pakravan Papi, with Cabernet, Merlot, and Sangiovese as well as Chardonnay and Chianti Malvasia.

The wines made at Poggioventoso have big personality, products of the collaboration between Maricia Affatato and oenologist Lorenzo Landi. Such as Fuochi, an intense ruby red with enveloping red fruit aromas, currant and cherry notes, delicate balsamic and spiced sensations; or Poetico, a seductive, light-bodied and enveloping white, highly drinkable.

BOLGHERI Questa è una delle zone vitivinicole per eccellenza della Costa Toscana. Qui nascono vini conosciuti e apprezzati in tutto il mondo, due nomi su tutti: Sassicaia e Ornellaia. Una tradizione che risale a non più di ottanta anni fa, e che forse anche proprio per questo ha dato spazio all’innovazione.

Negli ultimi anni Bolgheri ha visto nascere diverse aziende che hanno saputo farsi valere anche in questo contesto prestigioso.

Campo alla Sughera è l’azienda della famiglia Knauf, leader nel mondo dei materiali per l’edilizia, che nel 1998 comincia questa nuova avventura nel settore vinicolo, producendo ottimi vini come il loro rosso Arnione.

Tenuta Argentiera dei fratelli Corrado e Marcello Fratini nasce invece nel 1999. Siamo nell’area più vicina al mare di tutta la Doc Bolgheri, un terroir particolarmente adatto alla produzione di vini rossi. L’ultimo arrivato in questa meravigliosa cantina è Bartholomaus, frutto di un’accurata selezione di sole uve Merlot, uno dei pochi monovitigni prodotti in questa zona. Nello stesso anno Franco Batzella decide di dedicarsi con la moglie alla sua passione per il vino. Passione è anche il significato del nome di uno dei suoi vini, Tam, un rosso strutturato che ha ottenuto importanti riconoscimenti. Decisamente interessante anche Vox Loci Viognier, un Igt Toscana Bianco fresco e secco.

Guido Folonari nel 2002 acquista Donna Olimpia 1898 che vanta, oltre a vini di notevole qualità, una splendida cantina, utilizzata anche come location per suggestivi eventi. Altra realtà che

BOLGHERI This is one of the Tuscan Coast’s top wine-making regions, where wines prized and recognised throughout the world are born, namely these two: Sassicaia and Ornellaia. A tradition going back no more than eighty years, which perhaps accounts for the innovation of the area. In recent years, Bolgheri has witnessed the launch of several producers who have demonstrated their worth in this prestigious setting.

Campo alla Sughera is run by the Knauf family, leaders in the world of construction materials, who in 1998 began this new adventure in the wine sector, producing excellent wines such as their red Arnione.

Tenuta Argentiera of the brothers Corrado and Marcello Fratini was born in 1999.

We are now in the area closest to the sea within the DOC Bolgheri zone, a terroir particularly suited to red wine production. The last to arrive in this marvellous cellar is Bartholomaus, the fruit of a careful selection of exclusively Merlot grapes, one of the few single varieties produced in this region. In the same year, Franco Batzella decided, together with his wife, to pursue his passion for wine.

Passion is also the meaning of the name of one of his wines, Tam, a structured red that has received important recognition. Decidedly interesting is also Vox Loci Viognier, a Tuscan IGT white, crisp and dry. In 2002 Guido Folonari acquired Donna Olimpia 1898, which boasts, beyond its wines of remarkable quality, a

si distingue non solo per i suoi vini è l’Azienda Guado al Melo di Attilio Scienza e del figlio Michele, dove si trova un’immensa biblioteca con i libri di Attilio, luminare del vino e della zonazione e professore all’Università degli Studi di Milano. Le Macchiole, gestita dal 2002 da Cinzia Merli, è una riconosciuta azienda biologica che si sta convertendo al biodinamico con vini monovitigno (Paleo, un Cabernet Franc, Scrio, un Syrah in purezza, Messorio, un Merlot in purezza), che hanno già ottenuto riconoscimenti internazionali, mantenendosi così ai livelli elevati per cui è conosciuta in tutto il mondo già da molti anni.

Altra azienda che abbraccia la filosofia del biologico è Podere Grattamacco, dal 2002 passato sotto la proprietà della nota famiglia Bertarelli-Tipa. Il caso di dire “un nome una garanzia”.

Fabio Motta, genero di Michele Satta, apre nel 2009 una propria attività, che già si sta distinguendo nel panorama vitivinicolo.

VAL DI CORNIA Passando in Val di Cornia, ma rimanendo in tema di aziende biodinamiche, incontriamo Bulichella che ha in curriculum molti premi importanti, il più recente è la Medaglia d’argento al Concorso Mondiale di Bruxelles 2015, vinta con il bianco Coldipietrerosse 2012. Da menzionare anche il giovane Splash D, spumante metodo classico a base Petit Verdot e Sangiovese.

Azienda di spicco, Gualdo del Re di Nico Rossi che avvelendosi dei consigli dell’enologa Barbara Tamburini, produce grandi vini biologici che hanno ottenuto numerosi riconoscimenti.

L’enologo di Tua Rita è invece Stefano Chioccioli. Con la sua collaborazione vengono prodotti vini di carattere, con un bagaglio aromatico contraddistinto da particolari note ferrose e una progressione gustativa intensamente sapida.

Come Redigaffi, un Merlot in purezza che è diventato un vero e proprio riferimento e un cult wine internazionale. Giovane e interessante azienda quella di Francesca e Luca Milanesi, La Fralluca. Sangiovese, Vermentino, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Viognier e Alicante Bouschet sono i vigneti coltivati da questa coppia appassionata e intraprendente.

In questa zona si trovano bellissime cantine che meritano senz’altro una visita: vicino Suvereto, Rubbia al Colle, una delle tenute dei fratelli Muratori: “la cantina che non c’è”, completamente interrata; la cantina di Vittorio Moretti, Petra, progettata da Mario Botta e l’opera del famoso architetto Renzo Piano, Rocca di Frassinello, dove si vede tutta la sua passione per il vino e per questa terra.

BIBBONA Arrivati a Bibbona, ecco uno dei gioielli di Lodovico Antinori, la Tenuta di Biserno. Etichetta ammiraglia il Biserno, un blend di Merlot, Cabernet Franc e una piccolissima quantità di Cabernet Sauvignon e Petit Verdot. Un rosso lungo, intenso, complesso, longevo ed elegante. Un’altra realtà importante di questa area è Agrilandia, un’azienda che ha poco più di 20 anni, ma che regala vini intensi ed equilibrati.

Another enterprise distinguishing itself not only for its wines is the Azienda Guado al Melo of Attilio Scienza and son Michele, which houses an immense library of books by Attilio, a luminary of wine and wine zoning and professor at the University of Milan.

Le Macchiole, managed since 2002 by Cinzia Merli, is a recognized organic producer that is converting to biodynamic production of single varietals (Paleo, a Cabernet Franc, Scrio, a 100% Syrah, Messorio, a 100% Merlot) and has already received international recognition, while maintaining the highest standards it has been known for throughout the world for many years.

Another producer embracing the biodynamic philosophy is Podere Grattamacco, property of the well-known Bertarelli-Tipa family since 2002. In this case, it’s safe to say “the name is a guarantee”. Fabio Motta, son-in-law of Michele Satta who launched his own business in 2009, is another producer already distinguishing himself on the wine-making scene.

VAL DI CORNIA Now on to Val di Cornia, but keeping with the theme of biodynamic producers, to meet Bulichella, recipient of some important prizes, the most recent being the Silver Medal at the Concours Mondial of Brussels 2015 for the white Coldipietrerosse 2012.

Also worth noting is the young Splash D, a classic spumante made with a base of Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. A stand-out producer, Gualdo del Re of Nico Rossi avails itself of the advice of oenologist Barbara Tamburini and produces top organic wines that have received numerous recognitions. With the collaboration of oenologist Stefano Chioccioli, Tua Rita produces wines of character, with distinct aromas, in particular iron notes and an intensely sapid taste progression: such as Redigaffi, a 100% Merlot that has become a true reference point and international cult wine. A young and interesting vineyard run by the passionate and enterprising couple Francesca and Luca Milanesi, La Fralluca cultivates Sangiovese, Vermentino, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Viognier and Alicante Bouschet. Some beautiful cellars that definitely merit a visit are found in this region: near Suvereto, Rubbia al Colle, one of the Muratori brothers’ estates: “the cellar that is not”, completely underground; the cellar of Vittorio Moretti, Petra, designed by Mario Botta and the work of famous architect Renzo Piano, Rocca di Frassinello, where all his passion for wine and this land is evident.

BIBBONA Once in Bibbona, here one finds one of Lodovico Antinori’s jewels, the Biserno Estate, with their flagship label Biserno, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. A long, intense, complex wine, long-lifed and elegant. Another important producer in this area is Agrilandia, a vineyard that is just over 20 years old yet is making intense, balanced wines.

La Maremma, terra selvaggia, incontaminata e affascinante. Conosciuta solo da pochi decenni come zona vitivinicola, per i suoi grandi vini ha fatto innamorare numerosi imprenditori italiani ed internazionali.

La famiglia Bertarelli-Tipa ha reso importante il territorio che è l’alta Maremma Toscana, una Doc con denominazione a cascata che prevede il Montecucco e la Docg Montecucco Sangiovese e Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva.

ColleMassari rappresenta la rinascita di un’area particolarmente vocata per le produzioni vitivinicole biologiche, a Poggi del Sasso, sulle pendici di un vulcano ormai spento, il Monte Amiata.

Immerso nelle vigne di questa importante azienda, inaugurato il 25 giugno 2015, il Forum Fondazione Bertarelli è un gioiello di ecoarchitettura realizzato nato dalla passione per l’arte e il territorio dei fratelli Maria Iris Tipa Bertarelli e Claudio Tipa: un bellissimo spazio concerti, nuova sede dell’Amiata Piano Festival.

Storico produttore della zona di Montecucco, maestro di continuità e serio lavoro, è Leonardo Salustri titolare dell’Azienda Salustri, unico interprete con il clone di Sangiovese Salustri, recuperato grazie alla collaborazione dell’Università di Pisa e del professor Giancarlo Scalabrelli.

Potenza, struttura, sentori di frutti rossi e fiori, marasca, amarena, viola, rosa canina, ma anche menta, timo e speziatura dolce.

Spostandosi verso la zona tufacea di Pitigliano, una scelta, ormai vincente, è stata quella di Riccardo Lepri, patron dell’Azienda Montauto, nell’aver dedicato tutto l’amore e la passione per i vitigni bianchi, insolito per la terra di Toscana, regno dei vitigni a bacca rossa.

Enos I è il vino di punta dell’azienda, un’avvincente analisi sensoriale. Ultima novità, lo Spumante Metodo Classico, che dai primi assaggi, sboccatura 2014, promette un bel confronto con i fratelli italiani e i cugini d’oltralpe.

Il podere La Madonna, di Konstantin Tuvykin e del regista amico e socio Nikita Mikalkov, ci conduce a Tatti, nel comune di Massa Marittima, territorio a vocazione mineraria.

Il terroir sorprendente, un’altitudine di 400 m slm e la brezza marina sono una culla ideale per la coltivazione di Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante e Syrah, Ciliegiolo.

Già in produzione con ottimi risultati Oci Ciorni, Merlot in purezza con 12 mesi di permanenza in barrique di primo passaggio, segue un Monteregio Riserva con un blend di pari porzioni di Sangiovese e Cabernet Sauvignon.

Le primizie sono Schiava d’amore e Colpo di sole.

Un brindisi a questa azienda aspettando l’inaugurazione della nuova e affascinante cantina. Nella zona più a sud della Maremma, ai piedi di Capalbio, troviamo l’azienda di Monteverro, del giovane imprenditore tedesco Georg Weber, che in pochi anni, attraverso un’importante ricerca e rispetto per il territorio, ha esaltato, ancora di più, un’area vitivinicola prestigiosa e all’avanguardia in questo settore. Etichette eccellenti: primo fra tutti il rosso Monteverro.

The Maremma, a wild, uncontaminated , fascinating region. It is just since a couple of decades that it has become famous as a wine region whose great wines have conquered a lot of Italian and foreign entrepreneurs. The Bertarelli-Tipa family has made the upper Maremma Toscana important, a wonderful territory and a DOC region that produces different types of wines: the Montecucco, the DOC Montecucco Sangiovese and the Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva. ColleMassari represents the rediscovery of an area which is particularly suited for viticultural production, Poggi del Sasso, on the slopes of a now inactive volcano, Mount Amiata. Surrounded by the vineyards of this important estate, the Forum Berarelli Foundation, inaugurated on the 25th of June 2015, is a jewel of eco-architecture, resulted from the passion for art and territory shared by two brothers, Maria Iris Tipa Bertarelli and Claudio Tipa: a wonderful area dedicated to concerts and the new location of the Amiata Piano Festival. Historical producer in the Montecucco region and the best representative of continuity and hard work, Leonardo Salustri, owner of the Azienda Agraria Salustri, is the only one to use the clone of Sangiovese Salustri, exclusive to Salustri and got thanks to the collaboration with the University of Pisa and Professor Giancarlo Scalabrelli.

Strength, structure, scents of red fruits and flowers, marasca and black cherries, violets, wild roses but also mint, thyme and sweet spices. And now we move to the tuff area of Pitigliano, where Riccardo Lepri, owner of the Azienda Montauto, has made the winning choice of dedicating all his love and passion to white grape varieties, an exceptional thing for the Tuscan countryside, the reign of red berries grapes.

Enos I is the flagship label of the company, a caprtivating sensorial experience. Last new entry, the Spumante Metodo Classico: disgorged in 2014, it can actually make, from the first sip, a good comparison with other Italian and French quality sparkling wines.

La Madonna estate, owned by Konstantin Tuvykin and his friend and film director Nikita Mikalkov, brings us to Tatti, in the Municipality of Massa Marittima, a region mainly devoted to mining. The amazing terroir, an altitude of 400 mt on sea level and the sea breeze make this area the ideal place to cultivate the grape varieties of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante, Syrah and Ciliegiolo.

Great success for Oci Ciorni –whose production has already started-, 100% pure Merlot aged for 12 months in first passage oak barriques, followed by a Monteregio Riserva, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon in equal proportion.

The most prestigious wines are Schiava d’amore and Colpo di sole.

A toast to this winery, waiting for the inauguration of its new and fascinating cellar. In the lowest part of Maremma, at the feet of Capalbio, we find the Monteverro winery, property of a young German enterpreneur, Georg Weber, who has managed in a couple of years to give even more value to such a prestigious and leading region in the viticultural sector. L’Isola d’Elba è un territorio con un’antichissima tradizione legata alla viticoltura, si pensa risalente addirittura agli antichi Greci. Nei secoli la produzione non è stata sempre costante e ha visto anche periodi di crisi. Dagli anni ’80 però le aziende hanno dato inizio a una vera e propria rinascita della vitivinicoltura, a cavallo tra memoria e innovazione. Come nel caso dell’azienda locale di Antonio Arrighi, che sta sperimentando i benefici dell’utilizzo della terracotta come contenitore alternativo alle barrique.

La produzione dell’isola nel complesso è sempre più improntata verso il biologico e il biodinamico, mettendo fuori campo prodotti chimici ed anticrittogamici.

I passiti rimangono prodotto di punta. Basti pensare all’Aleatico, passato dal 2011 da Doc a Docg. Un vitigno non semplice da gestire, che ha avuto un suo particolare sviluppo all’Elba e a cui è legata la produzione di un intenso passito rosso.

Tra le novità dell’ultimo periodo, va segnalato il fatto che diversi produttori di queste zone, come la Tenuta le Ripalte e l’Azienda Agricola Mola, hanno cominciato a produrre con ottimi risultati ‘bollicine’, che dalla Franciacorta si trasferiscono così anche in Toscana.

Elba Island’s long tradition of grape-growing is believed to date to the ancient Greeks.

Over the centuries, wine production has been irregular here, undergoing periods of crisis. Since the 1980s, however, island producers have been bridging memory and innovation to contribute to a veritable rebirth in wine-making.

Such is the case with the esteemed local estate of Antonio Arrighi, who is experimenting with using terracotta containers rather than barriques.

On the whole, island production is increasingly organic and biodynamic, leaving aside chemical products and fungicides.

Passito wines remain a leading product, such as that of Aleatico, which in 2011 went from DOC to DOCG (‘controlled’ to ‘controlled and guaranteed’) status.

This not-easy-to-manage varietal has undergone special development on Elba, resulting in the production of an intense red passito.

Among the latest developments of note, several producers in this splendid region of Tuscany, such as le Ripalte Estate and Mola Vineyard, have started making ‘bubbly’, resulting in excellent wines comparable to Franciacorta.

Sull’Isola di Gorgona, in cui Vermentino e Ansonica si sono acclimatati perfettamente, i Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi stanno portando avanti un coraggioso progetto: gli agronomi e gli enologi dell’azienda, lavorando insieme ai detenuti dell’Istituto di pena dell’Isola, trasferiscono loro importanti competenze professionali che potranno essere riutilizzate al termine del periodo di detenzione, per un più facile reinserimento nella società. Frutto di questa collaborazione, il bianco Gorgona, proveniente da un piccolo vigneto di circa un ettaro, gestito in coltura biologica, posto nell’unica zona riparata dai forti venti marini, nel cuore di un anfiteatro da cui si domina il mare.

On the island of Gorgona, where Vermentino and Ansonica are perfectly acclimated, Marchesi de’Frescobaldi has been developing a wonderful project: agronomists and oenologists work with detainees of the island’s prison, sharing their significant professional competence and thus allowing prisoners the chance for a smoother reintegration into society.

The result of this collaboration is the white Gorgona, from a small, organic vineyard, about a hectare in size and situated in the island’s only zone protected from strong sea winds inside an amphitheatre, overlooking the sea.

Lastly, we turn to the beautiful island of Giglio. Deserving mention, given the rebirth of the magnificent indigenous varietal Ansonica, is ‘heroic wine-maker’ Francesco Carfagna.

The owner and passionate leader of Altura has confronted the rich yet rocky terrain of this island and rebuilt its historical terraces, resulting in an excellent white, Ansonaco Carfagna.

Passando infine alla meravigliosa Isola del Giglio, bisogna dare il merito della rinascita del vitigno autoctono Ansonica al ‘vignaiolo eroico’ Francesco Carfagna, proprietario e guida appassionata dall’azienda Altura, che ha sfidato il ricco ma roccioso terreno dell’Isola e ricostruito gli storici terrazzamenti, riuscendo così a produrre un ottimo bianco, l’Ansonaco Carfagna.

I colori e le caratteristiche dei vini in anteprima a Lucca The colors and characteristics of the wines in prevew in Lucca In questo mese di maggio, che ha visto l’apertura dell’Expo italiano dedicato al cibo e alla valorizzazione dei prodotti agricoli, non poteva mancare la XIV edizione dell’Anteprima dei Vini della Costa Toscana, voluta dall’omonima Associazione Grandi Cru, che si è svolta a Lucca il 9 e il 10 maggio nella splendida cornice del Real Collegio. Tale evento nasce dalla voglia di dare risalto a quelle realtà produttive, grandi e piccole, più o meno note, situate dalle Apuane alla Maremma, nelle provincie di Massa, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno e Grosseto. Territori diversi per tradizioni culturali, morfologia e pedologia, ma accomunate da un elemento che dona ai prodotti un carattere unico: il Mar Tirreno. E sono proprio le diversità produttive, le scelte dei vitigni e le caratteristiche intrinseche delle zone, a rendere esclusiva questa manifestazione, durante la quale ci si può confrontare con i produttori, partecipare a show cooking, mostre ed eventi correlati. Passando al soggetto principale della nostra degustazione, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di assaggiare en primeur, 43 vini rossi dell’annata 2014, che sarà ricordata per l’abbondanza delle precipitazioni, salvata in extremis da un settembre caldo che ha consentito ai produttori più audaci di portare in fondo la maturazione delle uve. I viticoltori hanno praticato una grande selezione in vigna e in cantina, per scartare acini e grappoli poco colorati e vinificare soltanto l’uva perfettamente matura, infatti tutti i vini degustati si presentavano di un “rosso profondo”, vivo e lucente, a testimonianza di una buona estrazione polifenolica, corredati da ottima espressione aromatica. Vini dotati di buona qualità e di grande stoffa, energici e vibranti, arricchiti da spiccata freschezza e da trama tannica levigata, quasi equilibrati e raffinati. La nostra selezione ha cercato di premiare le eccellenze emerse dalle varie zone, che in alcuni casi sono state delle conferme, in altri delle sorprese, in altri ancora, come per le aziende del pisano, bisognerà aspettare la permanenza in bottiglia per interpretare e capire al meglio l’influenza che quest’annata ha avuto sulle caratteristiche organolettiche dei loro prodotti di grande qualità.

Beside the opening of the Italian Expo dedicated to food and to the promotion of the agricultural products, this month of May also saw the 14th edition of the Preview of the Wines of the Tuscan Coast, organized by the Great Cru of the Tuscan Coast Association, which took place on the 9th and 10th May in Lucca in the wonderful location of the Real Collegio. This evenWt results from the desire of giving more value to the productive realities, either big or small, famous or not, located from the Apuan Alps to the Maremma region in the provinces of Massa, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto. Despite the different cultural traditions, morphology and soil characteristics, they share an element which is responsible fortheir products’ uniqueness: the Tyrrhenian Sea. These differences concerning the production, the choice of the grape varieties and the characteristics of the various territories contribute to the uniqueness of this event, in which visitors can meet producers, participate in show cooking sessions and other related shows and events. Now coming to the main subject of our tasting. We had the chance of tasting en primeur 43 red wines of 2014, a year that brought a large amount of rain but was then saved in extremis thanks to a warm September, which helped the boldest producers achieve the completion of the ripening process of the grapes. Wine growers have made a great selection in the vineyards and in the cellar aimed at choosing only the grapes with the deepest color so that only the perfectly ripen grapes are used: indeed, all the wines tastes were of a lively, bright “deep red” resulted from a good extraction of wine polyphenols and characterized by a rich aromatic expression. Wines of a high quality and great character, powerful and vibrating, enriched by a strong freshness and a smooth tannic structure, almost fully balanced and refined. Our selection tried to promote the top quality products of the various territory: some have confirmed our belief, others they have surprised us, while for some other names, as for the companies in the province of Pisa, we will have to wait till the end of the ageing period in bottles to best evaluate the way this year has affected the organoleptic characteristics of their high quality products.

Ciliegia croccante e piccoli frutti di bosco maturi in primo piano, seguiti da violetta e garofano, mineralità ferrosa ed ematica, pepe bianco, timo ed erbette aromatiche. L’ingresso in bocca è elegante e piacevole nella sua apparente snellezza; acidità e buoni tannini lavorano per dare carattere e grinta, il frutto e l’apporto calorico avvolgono il tutto, creando equilibrio e invogliando ad un nuovo sorso.

Bright and see-through ruby-red, the color of Sangiovese wine. The nose opens with crunchy cherry and ripe soft fruit aromas, followed by violet and carnation, iron and blood-like mineral notes, white pepper, thyme and aromatic herbs.

Entry on the palate is elegant and pleasant in its apparent leanness. Acidity and good tannins lend the wine character and grit, the fruity notes and caloric content are mouth-filling and create balance, leading to another sip. Long, satisfactory and fruity persistence.

ReRosso 2010 Montescudaio DOC Podere Morazzano Sangiovese, Merlot e Cabernet Franc 13,5% Colore rosso rubino di buona intensità e consistenza. Profumi che strizzano l’occhio al Médoc, con le uve internazionali che caratterizzano i riconoscimenti: gelatina di mora e ribes, note piraziniche che ricordano l’erba appena tagliata, tabacco biondo e spezie dolci, noce moscata e grafite. Il sorso è perfettamente allineato e coerente con quanto espresso al naso, ci sono slancio e pienezza di frutto, freschezza e struttura.

Deciso impatto fruttato di mora e mirtilli in confettura, potpourri di fiori macerati, cannella e noce moscata, cuoio ed essenze orientali, grafite e lieve tocco etereo. In bocca è materico, ricco e tridimensionale senza perdere di vista la bevibilità e l’eleganza. Unico difetto: sono soltanto 1.600 le bottiglie prodotte!

Thick and dense ruby-red colored, a clear sign of a wine having considerable extract and structure. Fruity entry on the nose with blackberry and blueberry preserve, macerated flower potpourri, cinnamon and nutmeg, leather and Oriental essences, graphite and a light ethereal touch. Full-bodied, rich and three-dimensional on the palate, as well as easily drinkable and elegant. Its only flaw is that there are only 1,600 bottles per year of it!

Val di Toro Maremma Toscana DOC 2011 - Val di Toro Sangiovese e Montepulciano - 14,5% Rubino di buona trasparenza. I profumi sono complessi e delicati: ciliegia croccante, spezie dolci, fiori secchi, garofano e un tocco ematico.

La struttura piena e calda risulta snellita è resa piacevole dalla sinergia tra freschezza e tannini ben estratti. Persistenza lunga e saporita, dal grande ritorno fruttato.

Inizialmente compresso, sprigiona un bouquet composito ed elegante: creme de cassis, mora, petali di fiori appassiti. In bocca è ricco e avvolgente con il pregio di saper mantenere slancio e piacevolezza.

Speziatura scura e rabarbaro, corteccia, prugna, note rôtie e tostate compongono il quadro olfattivo. Piena corrispondenza all’assaggio, equilibrio in divenire per un prodotto caratteriale e deciso nella sua espressione aromatica. Struttura e buona persistenza.

La fragranza di piccoli frutti di bosco ed i ricordi floreali di violetta catturano il naso, l’impianto è semplice ma godibile nel suo approccio “easy” e gioviale. Media struttura e buona freschezza conducono ad un finale gustoso e nitido, sempre giocato sul frutto.

See-through ruby-red. The nose offers soft fruit aromas and floral notes of violet. A simple but very enjoyable and cheerful bouquet. Medium structure and good freshness lead to the tasty and clear finish, based on fruity notes again.

Conversazione con Claudio Tipa a Grattamacco, davanti alla nuova cantina concepita in grande ma senza clamori A conversation with Claudio Tipa at the new Grattamacco cellar, a vision of greatness, without the fuss Claudio Tipa, ex ingegnere di telecomuncazioni, dirige le aziende di famiglia ColleMassari a Montecucco nota anche per la sua cantina disegnata da Edoardo Milesi, Grattamacco a Bolgheri e Poggio di Sotto a Montalcino. Con la sorella Maria Iris Tipa Bertarelli presiede la Fondazione Bertarelli che si occupa della promozione del territorio della Toscana mediante contributi nel mondo dell’arte (è il caso del Forum appena inaugurato a Montecucco nato per ospitare concerti e festival di musica classica), del recupero ambientale, dell’archeologia, dell’architettura.

Lo abbiamo incontrato a Grattamacco, in occasione di una visita alla nuova cantina che ha sostituito la preesistente in legno. “Era una sorta di capanna canadese, anche molto bella, ma da un punto di vista sanitario si allontanava dallo standard dell’azienda” spiega Tipa, che nasconde dietro le lenti affumicate degli occhiali da sole perennemente inforcati lo sguardo sicuro e sempre lanciato in avanti. “Stavamo soffrendo anche per dimensioni – scruta lontano i due vigneti recentemente acquistati a 200 metri slm che si sono aggiunti ai 14 ettari coltivati con metodi biologici - così abbiamo pensato che fosse venuto il momento di fare il salto. Abbiamo quasi raddoppiato i volumi e pur rinunciando al romanticismo originale, optato in virtù di elementi più moderni per perseguire la filosofia che caratterizza il nostro operato qui a Bolgheri: rendere costante la qualità di un prodotto incostante. Insomma abbiamo preso il buono che c’era e l’abbiamo saputo mantenere nel tempo”. Tipa affitta Grattamacco nel 2002 e nello stesso anno fa la sua prima vendemmia. Lo acquista qualche anno dopo da PierMario Meletti Cavallari, suo lungimirante creatore che nel 1982 aveva imbottigliato il primo vino.

Una storia di quasi 15 anni, in continuità con la fama maturata della prima proprietà (1977 - 2001).

Quali caratteristiche contraddistinguono Grattamacco?

E’ la prima etichetta che qui a Bolgheri parte, a distanza di un certo numero di anni, dopo Sassicaia. PierMario aveva molto Sangiovese e i suoi primi vini, oltre al Cabernet e Merlot, avevano una forte presenza di Sangiovese.

Col passare degli anni ne ha diminuito la percentuale nel suo comprensibilissimo volersi avvicinare al Sassicaia. Oggi parliamo di un vino che

Claudio Tipa, former telecommunications engineer, manages the ColleMassari and Montecucco family businesses, also known for its cellar designed by Edoardo Milesi, Grattamacco in Bolgheri and Poggio di Sotto in Montalcino. Along with his sister, Maria Iris Tipa Bertarelli, he oversees the Bertarelli Foundation, active since 2009, which handles the promotion of the Tuscan region through contributions from the art world (such as the Forum, just opened in Montecucco to host concerts and classical music festivals) and environmental, archaeological, and architectural restoration.

We met with him at Grattamacco, while visiting the new cellar that’s replaced a prior wooden structure. “It was a kind of wood cabin, very nice really, but in terms of hygiene was not up to the company’s standards,” Tipa explains from behind dark sunglasses, perennially concealing his steady and focused gaze. “We were worried about the size as well – he looks to the two recently acquired vineyards in the distance, 200 metres above sea level, which have joined the 14 organically-cultivated hectares - and we thought that the moment had come to take the plunge. We have nearly doubled our volumes, renouncing our initial romanticism and opting for more modern elements in pursuit of the philosophy that characterises our methods here in Bolgheri: consistent quality in an inconsistent product.

In any case, we took what good there was and learned how to maintain that over time.” Tipa rented Grattamacco in 2002, the year of his first harvest. He purchased it some years later from PierMario Meletti Cavallari, the visionary who bottled its first wine in 1982. A history almost 15 years in the making, in line with the fame gained during its first ownership (1977 - 2001).

What are the qualities that distinguish Grattamacco?

It’s the first label here in Bolgheri, a number of years after Sassicaia. PierMario had a lot of Sangiovese, and his first wines, other than the Cabernet and Merlot, had a strong Sangiovese presence. Over the years that percentage diminished, given his understandable desire to move closer to Sassicaia. Today we are talking about a wine that is 65% Cabernet, 20%

ha un 65% di Cabernet, un 20% di Merlot e un 15 % di Sangiovese e mi considero un po’ il salvatore di questo 15% perché è la sua identità, la caratteristica che ci distingue dalla volontà diffusa tra i vini di Bolgheri.

La cantina di Grattamacco non è ‘firmata’ come quella di ColleMassari, ha cambiato opinione sulle archistar?

ColleMassari è stata la prima cantina che abbiamo fatto, nata anche dal desiderio di lavorare nella bellezza, di rendere gradevole un lavoro che vive ogni giorno di contrarietà. Ma tolta la bellezza, quella cantina è nata per corrispondere ai criteri più funzionali che si possano immaginare. Quindi se togliamo quel pizzico di entusiasmo e di esuberanza in più di quei miei primi anni nel mondo del vino, poi si arriva alla normalità e alla comprensione che “il vino si fa con l’uva” come dice sempre Castelli, il nostro consulente, faccio l’esempio della Francia dove la semplicità delle cantine dei nomi più blasonati è disarmante. Qui non abbiamo sentito il bisogno di fare cose eclatanti, piuttosto la necessità fare grandi cose senza darlo a vedere.

In cosa consiste l’innovazione a Bolgheri anche alla luce delle esperienze a Montecucco e Montalcino?

Nel cercare di dominare i processi produttivi migliorando il prodotto in funzione dell’annata che ci troviamo a gestire. I vigneti hanno l’età giusta, la cantina le caratteristiche necessarie a una produzione di livello. Dunque la nostra innovazione è stare in equilibrio tra la terra, il tempo e il padreterno e fare il prodotto migliore in base alle condizioni che si presentano.

ColleMassari, Grattamacco, Poggio di Sotto, tre figli amati tutti allo stesso modo?

E’ presto detto: la testa è una la mia, l’enologo di riferimento è Luca Marrone, l’agronomo è Giuliano Guerrini. Tre persone che gestiscono tre aziende con una passione e un amore per le loro diversità e collocazioni così speciale

Merlot and 15% Sangiovese. I consider myself a bit of a saviour of this 15%, as this is the identity, the quality that distinguishes us among the wines of Bolgheri.

The Grattamacco winery is not ‘designer’ like that of ColleMassari.

Has your opinion of the starchitect changed?

ColleMassari was the first winery we made, born from a desire to work with something beautiful, to make a job full of tribulations more pleasant. But take away the beauty, and that cellar reflects the most functional criteria imaginable. So, if we remove that extra pinch of enthusiasm and exuberance of my early years in the wine world, we return to normality, an understanding that “wine is made with grapes” as our consultant Castelli always says. An example of this is France, where the simplicity of the most prestigious cellars is striking. Here we have not felt the need to do something sensational but rather the need to do great things without showing it.

What does Bolgheri’s innovation consist of, in light of the experiences at Montecucco and Montalcino?

In trying to dominate the production processes and improve the product according to the vintage we find ourselves managing. The vineyards are at the right age, the cellar has the right production characteristics. Our innovation must therefore be found in the balance between land, time, and the great almighty, to make the best product given the conditions that arise.

ColleMassari, Grattamacco, Poggio di Sotto. Three children loved equally?

It’s too soon to say: there’s myself, consulting oenologist Luca Marrone, and agronomist Giuliano Guerrini. Three people managing three businesses with such passion and love for their diversity and such special locations that to even consider an approach outside this typically sentimental one

Com’è cambiato il mercato negli ultimi 15 anni?

Quando abbiamo fatto la prima vendemmia a Grattamacco andava così bene che le annate 2002 e 2003, tra le peggiori degli ultimi 40 anni, si sono vendute senza problemi. Subito dopo c’è stata la prima grande crisi del vino, proprio mentre stavamo raccogliendo i primi frutti del nostro lavoro nei vigneti. Ho capito che dovevo abbandonare la vecchia rete vendita e mettere in campo i nostri agenti. Da allora non abbiamo più conosciuto battute d’arresto e siamo sempre cresciuti con una media del 15-20% di fatturato all’anno.

A parte questo, il vostro vero antidoto alla recessione del mercato?

La formula Grattamacco, che ha funzionato. Abbiamo preso un’azienda che non era più lucida come un tempo e siamo riusciti a lucidarla, molto in fretta. Risultato: è ripartita subito. Senza Grattamacco prima e Poggio di Sotto dopo, ColleMassari con tutta la sua bellezza e la qualità dei suoi prodotti probabilmente non avrebbe funzionato così bene. Diciamo che è stato un ‘sistema’ virtuoso nel complesso.

Cosa pensa di Bolgheri e dei suoi vini?

Che questo è un pezzo di Bordeaux trapiantato, con fortuna e difficilmente imitabile, perché diciamolo francamente non è solo qui che si gioca con il Merlot o col Cabernet ma guarda caso altrove non è mai partito né il brand né l’immagine come a Bolgheri.

Dal mondo del vino quali doni ha ricevuto?

Il rapporto con la terra e la manualità nel fare i vigneti. Li ho disegnati e tracciati tutti io, lavorando 13, 14 ore al giorno, sempre fresco come una rosa. Un po’ abituato a stare sui cantieri, ad avere un certo occhio, a parte il primo - ma diamine era il primo e un giorno o l’altro lo rifarò - non ho mai fatto errori, questo me lo devo riconoscere.

How has the market changed in the past 15 years?

When we had our first harvest at Grattamacco, it went so well that even the 2002 and 2003 vintages, among the worst of the past 40 years, sold without problems. Immediately after followed the first big wine crisis, just when we were beginning to reap the first fruits of our labour in the vineyards. I understood that I had to abandon the old sales network and take on new agents. Since then we have not experienced any major setbacks and sales have grown on average 15-20% per year.

Aside from this, what is your true antidote to the market recession?

The Grattamacco formula, which has worked. We took a business that was not as sharp as it had once been, and we were able to smarten it up, and quickly. The result: it immediately restarted. Without Grattamacco first and then Poggio di Sotto afterwards, ColleMassari, even with all its beauty and quality products, probably would not have worked out so well. Let’s just say that it’s been an ever-progressing ‘system’ on the whole.

What do you think of Bolgheri and its wines?

This is a piece of Bordeaux transplanted, fortunate and not easily imitated, because let’s face it, we are not the only ones working with Merlot and Cabernet. Yet there’s never been a brand or an image like that of Bolgheri.

What have you gained working in the world of wine?

The relationship with the land and the manual skills of working the vineyards. I designed and laid out all of them, working 13, 14 hours a day, always fresh as a rose. I’m a little used to being on construction sites, to having an eye for things, and aside from the first - but hell that was the first and one day or another I’ll redo it - I’ve never made mistakes, this I have to admit.

Questo è un anno di grandi ricorrenze per la prestigiosa Fattoria Le Pupille, 75 ettari di vigneto vicino al borgo medievale di Pereta, Maremma del sud, sogno diventato realtà di Elisabetta Geppetti. Cinquant’anni portati splendidamente quelli della signora del Morellino, che giunge alla sua trentesima vendemmia, proprio quando Saffredi, l’etichetta ammiraglia dell’azienda, compie 25 anni. Saffredi nasce come Cabernet Sauvignon in purezza e solo dal 1991, quando iniziano a entrare in produzione le vigne di Merlot e del Syrah di successivo impianto, modifica il suo uvaggio. Oggi è un blend di Cabernet Sauvignon e Merlot con una piccola parte di Petit Verdot. This is year of great anniversaries for Fattoria Le Pupille: 75 hectares of vineyards near the medieval town of Pereta in the lower Maremma, this prestigious estate is the dream come true of Elisabetta Geppetti.

The ‘Lady of Morellino’ is a young 50, celebrating this year its 30th harvest together with the 25th anniversary of Saffredi, the flagship label produced by the winery.

Saffredi remained a pure Cabernet Sauvignon until 1991, when it started to include the Merlot and Syrah grape varieties which entered the production after a grafting process.

Today it is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a small part of Petit Verdot.

Beside these two wines, also a complete and variegated selection of red wines and elegant, refined white wines like the Poggio Argentato, a dry, clean style wine with a soft, fruity flavor.

After 30 years, Elisabetta Geppetti has still the same enthusiasm showed by those who love their job and for whom their job is also a vocation; her passion and will power are what her daughter Clara, who has been working with her in the vineyards for about three years, has learnt from her.

Every harvest is for Elisabetta like a challenge and an opportunity of making better, and we must owe that she keeps her commitments, since she has made her company become ‘Ambassador of Maremma’.

Nonostante non sia un vitigno caratteristico toscano, il Cabernet in questi territori ha delle peculiarità uniche ed è diventato un riferimento tra i prodotti della Cantina. In abbinamento, Stracci al pecorino e ricotta con zafferano purissimo di Maremma.

In the heart of the Tuscan Maremma there is an address that gourmet enthusiasts can not miss: the winery shop/workshop I Vini di Maremma. The large selection of the best products of the Maremma’s cuisine is accompanied by a number of the wines produced by the Società Agricola Cooperativa I Vini di Maremma, which was founded in 1954 by a group of passionate winemakers. Since then it has managed to create an image and a well-defined identity in the Maremma’s world of wine.

Behind Coopetive’s success is Osvaldo Allegro, who was its president for over 25 years and who today is witnessing the passage to the next generation as the vice president with specific powers.

What is the philosophy of the Società Agricola Cooperativa I Vini di Maremma?

Cooperativa I Vini di Maremma has proved to be able to make its members feel constantly rewarded by being capable of changing over time, of adapting to the changes in the wine world from 1954 to the present day. We have kept constantly up to date and have developed the skills required both in the vineyards and the wine cellar to produce topquality products expressing a distinctive sense of the place of origin.

How is your distribution structured?

We have a strong presence in the Italian market. Both with the store in Marina di Grosseto località Il Cristo where we have joined together all the excellent culinary produce of the area accompanied by our wines, and through large retailers. Now we are ready to open up to new markets and expand abroad.

What is the winery’s signature wine?

Il Macchiaiolo, a red Maremma Toscana DOC wine.

One of your favorite food-and-wine pairings?

The Maremma Cabernet Sauvignon, an IGT Maremma Toscana 100% Cabernet wine. Although it is not a variety native to Tuscany, Cabernet grown in our region is truly unique and the wine it gives is one of the winery’s best.

I would pair it with “stracci” pasta with pecorino and ricotta cheese sprinkled with pure Maremma safrron.

I vini della cantina La Cura, quando la competenza si fonde con il gusto e la sensibilità The wines of La Cura estate: competency accompanied by taste and sensitivity L’azienda vitivinicola La Cura, di proprietà di Enrico Corsi, è una giovane e dinamica realtà produttiva costituita da quindici ettari di vigneto nel cuore della denominazione Maremma Toscana Doc e Monteregio di Massa Marittima, situata sulla costa tirrenica dell’alta Maremma Toscana.

Coadiuvati dall’Università di Pisa, Enrico e i suoi collaboratori portano avanti un approccio strettamente ecologico per la lavorazione del suolo e delle vigne, che regala vini equilibrati, ottimi al naso e al palato. Le prime bottiglie di vino sono del 1999, ma è nel 2001 che entra nel mercato il Merlot La Cura, il vino ‘bandiera’ dell’azienda, nominato miglior Merlot d’Italia nel 2010 al prestigioso concorso di Aldeno. Affinato in barrique per un anno, fonde un profilo aromatico intenso e solare a una progressione gustativa ampia e succosa. Uno dei Merlot con più carattere della costa toscana, terroir d’eccellenza proprio di questa tipologia di vini.

Altri prodotti di spicco della cantina La Cura sono il Predicatore, un vino dolce dal sontuoso e lunghissimo finale di bocca e il Cabernets, un rosso pieno ed energico di notevole struttura.

Oltre a questi che sono i prodotti di punta, altri piacevolissimi vini rossi - Colle Bruno, Brecce Rosse e Maremma Doc Cavaliere d’Italia, ultimo arrivato - e i bianchi Valdemar e il Trinus, freschi e profumati. Tra le etichette di recente produzione, Vedetta, una speciale selezione di Cabernet Sauvignon prodotto solo nelle annate migliori, con cui è nato l’interessante progetto dell’azienda rivolto anche ai non vedenti, oggi esteso a tutta la gamma dei vini prodotti.

The winery La Cura, owned by Enrico Corsi, is a young and dynamic company has a total of 15 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the DOC Maremma Toscana region and Monteregio di Massa Marittima, on the Tyrrhenian coastal part of the High Maremma Toscana.

With the support of the University of Pisa, Enrico and his staff have been carrying on an ecological approach to the soil and vine cultivation, thus obtaining well-balanced wines that are exquisite on the nose and palate.

The first bottles were produced in 1999, while 2001 was the year of production of the company’s flagship wine, the Merlot La Cura, elected Best Merlot of Italy in 2010 during the prestigious wine competition in Aldeno. Aged one year in barriques, the wine combines an intense, bright aroma profile with a progressive, wide and juicy taste profile. One of the Merlot wines from the Tyrrhenian coast –the best terroir for the production of this kind of wines- with more character.

Other famous products of the winery La Cura are the Predicatore, a sweet wine with a lavish, long final mouth-feel and the red Cabernets, a full, strong wine with an impressive character.

Beside these products, which are the most famous, also other very pleasant red wines - Colle Bruno, Brecce Rosse and the new entry Maremma Doc Cavaliere d’Italia – and white wines like the Valdemar and the Trinus, both fresh and fragrant.

Among the newest labels, Vedetta, a special selection of Cabernet Sauvignon produced only in the best harvest years, which launched the interesting company’s project dedicated to blind people –now extended to the whole wine production. Braille labeling, QR code with audio information and a bottle conceived for an easier handling, whose heavy material makes it more difficult to break down.

Identità e carattere

Podere Morazzano, metodi naturali e grande passione a Montescudaio Natural methods and great passion in Montescudaio Podere Morazzano si trova a Montescudaio (PI), uno splendido angolo di Toscana, e nasce dal forte desiderio di creare vini che siano specchio di questo luogo unico al mondo. Nove ettari a 250 metri sul livello del mare, accarezzati dalle brezze marine e dal sole della costa tirrenica, di cui cinque dedicati ai vitigni del Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Merlot e Petit Verdot.

Un’azienda tosco-veneta, che produce vini toscani, perché frutto della terra e delle uve toscane, ma essendo i titolari originari di Vicenza, con il gusto veneto: vini di estrema bevibilità, morbidi, mai spigolosi, con tannini equilibrati e poco legno.

La vendemmia avviene rigorosamente a mano, successivamente, pigiatura e fermentazione sono effettuate con uve separate e in modo naturale nei tini d’acciaio, con rimontaggi giornalieri. I vini vengono poi travasati nelle barrique di rovere francese, dove riposano per diversi mesi e assemblati solo prima di essere messi in bottiglia, dove saranno ulteriormente affinati per un altro periodo.

Il risultato di tanto lavoro e tanta passione, sono vini di alta qualità, dal carattere inconfondibile e una forte personalità, massima espressione di questo magnifico territorio, per una produzione totale che non supera mai le 20.000 bottiglie annue.

Il Ribuio, che prende il nome dal bosco secolare che abbraccia le vigne, è un Montescudaio Rosso Doc di buona freschezza, con sentori di frutta rossa, versatile e piacevole. Il ReRosso è un altro Montescudaio Rosso Doc, in versione riserva, un vino elegante e potente, dal colore rosso rubino intenso e dal gusto avvolgente che rispetta perfettamente le promesse olfattive. L’Eriva, questa volta un Merlot in purezza, si presenta morbido e dolce fino alla sensazione finale, che inonda la bocca di note pungenti e speziate, come quelle dei chiodi di garofano.

Podere Morazzano is located in Montescudaio (PI), a wonderful town in Tuscany, and it originates from a strong desire to create wines that would reflect the uniqueness of this place. Nine hectares of vineyards -250 meters on the sea level- exposed to the gentle sea breeze and sunny weather of the Tyrrhenian coast, five of which cultivated with Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Merlot e Petit Verdot.

A Tuscan-Venetian company that produces Tuscan wines, because made in Tuscany with Tuscan grape varieties, with a Venetian taste due to the fact that the company owners come from Vicenza: extremely drinkable, soft, never harsh, with a balanced tannic structure and low wood.

The harvesting is rigorously by hand, then comes pressing and fermentation, made with separated grapes and in a natural way in steel tanks, with daily pumping over. The wine is then poured in French oak barrels and aged for several months, assembled -just before being bottled- and then aged for another period of time.

The result of such a hard work and passion are high quality wines with a unique character and a strong personality that best express this wonderful territory, for a total production that never exceeds the 20,000 bottles per year.

The Ribuio, named after the secular forest that surrounds the vineyards, is a DOC Montescudaio red wine of good freshness and with red fruits notes, versatile and pleasant. The ReRosso is another excellent DOC Montescudaio Red Reserve wine, elegant and powerful, of an intense ruby red and enveloping flavor that perfectly reflect its olfactory perceptions. The Eriva, a 100% pure Merlot wine this time, is soft and sweet until the finish, which fills the mouth with pungent and spicy notes like cloves.

Dark ruby-red. A play of black and red fruit in alcohol and vaguely balsamic sweet spicy hints. A fruity and somewhat alcoholic palate because of the still-young tannins.

IL POGGIO CORNO DOC ORCIA ROSSO 2013 Azienda Agricola Il Poggio 65% Sangiovese 35% Merlot e Ciliegiolo Biologico Purpureo. E’ un trionfo di frutti di bosco, mirtilli, more, ciliegie nere. La dolcezza del frutto propone all’assaggio un tema monocorde piacevole senza celare una veste tannica ardita.

Deep red. It is a profusion of soft fruit, blueberry, blackberry, black cherry aromas. Pleasant but monotonous sweet fruity notes on the palate not supported by a bold tannic structure.

ECLISSE DOC ORCIA ROSSO 2010 Azienda La Bandita e Lunadoro 60% Sangiovese 20% Cabernet 20% Merlot Rubino. Libera essenze balsamiche in armonica successione a frutti neri e ricordi minerali. L’apporto alcolico ne accarezza il gusto fresco, ritmi sapidi fruttati dai tannini ancora audaci.

La nuova sede del Consorzio di Tutela della Vernaccia di San Gimignano New offices for the Vernaccia di San Gimignano consortium Cambiare per crescere, per migliorarsi e per moltiplicare le risorse in vista di nuove sfide sempre più impegnative e al passo con i tempi. La nuova sede del Consorzio di Tutela della Vernaccia di San Gimignano è stata da poco inaugurata e sarà un moderno luogo da dove iniziare un cammino che consenta alle produzioni locali di guardare al futuro. Il Consorzio dalla sua fondazione nel 1972 ha sempre avuto una prestigiosa sede nel centro storico di San Gimignano, Patrimonio dell’umanità Unesco, oggi le attività consortili e le esigenze di tutti quelli che ne usufruiscono hanno imposto questa scelta che offre spazi più adeguati e più facilmente accessibili.

Un Consorzio in fermento che la neorieletta Presidente Letizia Cesani, al terzo mandato, proietta verso il futuro tramite la crescita delle produzioni, non tanto in quantità ma soprattutto in qualità, delle competenze, traducibili in azioni sempre più consapevoli nei confronti di un’agricoltura sostenibile. Un territorio quello di San Gimignano da salvaguardare anche per il valore estetico delle proprie vigne ammirate dai turisti di tutto il mondo come icone della Toscana.

L’inaugurazione alla quale hanno partecipato oltre al Sindaco Giacomo Bassi, il Presidente di Federdoc Riccardo Ricci Curbastro, l’Amministratore Delegato di Valoritalia Ezio Pelissetti e il Dirigente della Regione Toscana Marco Spinelli è stata l’occasione per la Presidente del Consorzio Letizia Cesani per lanciare le attività che nel 2016 porteranno la Vernaccia DOC al 50esimo anniversario.

The new seat of the Consortium for the Safeguard of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, recently inaugurated, will be a modern place where to start a process that will contribute to the preservation of local wine production. Since its foundation in 1972, the Consortium’s seat has always been in the historical centre of San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but today the Consortium’s activities and the needs of those who take part to them have made this choice necessary to have more suitable and easily accessible spaces. A Consortium that is actually bubbling with energy, with its President Letizia Cesani, newly re-elected for a third mandate, making projections related to a growth in production –in terms of quality more than quantity- and competency, through actions ever more focused on sustainable agriculture. Actually a hot topic, sustainability has a central position in many current issues today, not only in those related to wine production, but also in those concerning diet and nutrition: the need of an organic and sustainable agriculture doesn’t have to be perceived as a market trend, but as a need shared by producers, since their life completely depends on the territory they work on and since their children are grown in the vineyards they cultivate. But another reason why the wine producing region of San Gimignano has to be protected is the aesthetical value of its vineyards, admired by tourists from all over the world as one of the symbols of Tuscany. Beside Mayor Giacomo Bassi, the inauguration saw the participation of President of Federdoc Riccardo Ricci Curbastro, CEO of Valoritalia Ezio Pelissetti and Marco Spinelli, Manager of the Tuscan Region, and it was also the occasion, for President of the Consortium Letizia Cesani, to present the projects that will accompany the DOC Vernaccia to its 50th anniversary in 2016.

Ais Toscana e Antinori Il prossimo autunno parte il nuovo progetto didattico di AIS Toscana e Antinori. Il 3 settembre parte, presso la cantina Antinori di Bargino, il corso professionale per sommelier AIS dedicato ai dipendenti del Gruppo vinicolo. Un programma didattico firmato AIS Toscana per Antinori, la prima azienda a investire in un progetto di questo tipo. Direttore del corso, Massimo Castellani, delegato AIS di Firenze.

The new professional AIS Sommelier course, dedicated to the employees at Gruppo Vinicolo will start on the 3rd of September at the Cantina Antinori in Bargino. An educational program organized

A classificarsi al terzo posto di Blind tasting competition, unico toscano, è Aldo Fiordelli, premiato dal marchese Piero Antinori. Una degustazione alla cieca di sei vini, alla quale hanno partecipato circa 50 persone tra produttori, enologi e giornalisti presenti alla manifestazione.
