How did the idea to reopen this legendary place come about?

It was my son Filippo (Creative Director) who first raised the idea with Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Gallery. I was hard put to believe it 36

I owe much, if not everything, as far as development and inspiration are concerned, to the city where I was born. When I had the privilege of holding a show at the Uffizi five years ago, for example, I donated new lighting to the Loggia de’ Lanzi. For “Firenze Hometown of Fashion”, my family and I made the gift of a new lighting system for the Ponte Vecchio, and presented it with a spectacular aquatic show on the Arno, followed by a performance by Andrea Bocelli before an audience of 25,000 people.

What episode changed your life?

When my father made me the gift of a vintage car. At first I was proud, 39

What is your personal luxury?

In 2003 I wrote a book with Gianluca Tenti and Umberto Cecchi. I called it Luxor, in pursuit of the true meaning of a word very much in vogue. I wrote that for me true luxury is a glass of water in the desert, being with family and friends in front of a fire. Today I would add, being in the countryside with my dog, a glass of wine and a piece of bread with mortadella What is craftsmanship?

The ability to work material with a single rule – hands, head and heart.

We Italians are true masters at this.

You have 52 boutiques around the world. What is your experience with regard to the Chinese market, which now represents an important slice of all luxury sales worldwide?

I have believed in China since the beginning of the Nineties. I opened by first boutique there in Shanghai in ’93, when no-one was yet talking about a market economy. I had sensed the great energy of a people that wanted to grow. I’ve seen how they have grown and become a global player. I have to say that Chinese men have become increasingly refined and elegant compared with the stereotypes of a couple of decades ago.

In October he came back to Florence for the movie’s world premiere, together with director Ron Howard and writer Dan Brown, from whose book the movie was adapted, as were the previous two, The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons.

Once again, fantastic locations and more and more fascinating Italian settings...

This is one of the great joys of working with Dan Brown’s books. You can shoot in the Louvre or the Pantheon in Rome, or in the Uffizi, where an employee took me to see Botticelli’s Venus and told me it was the painting that gave birth to the Renaissance.

What was your experience of Florence?

I didn’t see Dante’s Inferno in Florence. Rather I saw the birth of the Renaissance, the greatest architecture in the history of mankind. And also the best ice cream I have ever tasted!

How much of Florence’s charm did you manage to experience despite a frenetic shooting schedule?

After the last take on the first day’s shoot, I took advantage while the square was still closed and they were packing up the equipment to take some photos of Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio with my cellphone. And then you can 44

Well, playing him gives me the chance to be the smartest guy in the room. You give me the right amount of verbiage and just enough time to do the right amount of research, and I can convince you that I may be the smartest guy in the room, at least for the duration of the movie.

Who is an Italian artist you would like to work with?

Roberto Benigni, we would make the perfect duo. It’s a shame we didn’t get to have dinner together in Florence.

The movie is set in Florence, Venice and Istanbul. Which one do you feel the closest tie with?

It was great shooting in Florence and Venice, two truly unique cities. And well, also in front of the green screen that simulated Istanbul. (laughs).

This movie, that has played all over the world, is brimming with Italian art (Vasari’s frescos of the Battle of Marciano in the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio also feature) and architectural wonders.

Rome. MACRO and Maxxi The capital devotes two highly original and functional two venues to contemporary art, in answer to a need to go beyond the ancient beauties of the city. MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome) is housed in two venues, the first in what until 1971 was the Peroni brewery in Via Nizza, Restructuring of the site by architect Odile Decq gave it great usability and dynamism. A second venue, the MACRO Testaccio, is located in a former 19th century slaughterhouse in the Testaccio district, and its programme of cultural and artistic evens are mainly targeted at young audiences.

A different project led to the creation of the MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts.

Here contemporary creativity is at the basis of everything, and it is above all a laboratory for cultural experimentation and innovation, for the study, research and production of aesthetic content.

The Exhibition offers a route that unfolds over the course of nine chapters or families of artists, with two introductory realms in the Central Pavilion of the Gardens, with seven other universes which wind from the Arsenale to the Giardino delle Vergini. 120 artists from 51 countries are participating.

“The Biennale must present itself as a place whose method, and almost its ‘raison d’être’, is dedicated to an open dialogue between artists, and between artists and the public.”

With these words, Paolo Baratta, President of La Biennale di Venezia, presents the Biennale Arte 2017 explaining that “the 57th Exhibition introduces a further development. It is as though what has always been our primary work method—encounter and dialogue—has now become the theme of the Exhibition. “An Exhibition inspired by humanism,” says curator Christine Macel, “a humanism which celebrates the ability of mankind, through art, to avoid being dominated by the powers governing world affairs; a humanism in which the artistic act is, simultaneously, an act of resistance, of liberation and of generosity.”

Another revealing aspect of the 57th Exhibition is the fact that of 120 artists who have been invited by the curator, 103 have never before participated at the exhibition. Some are discoveries, many others, at least for this year’s edition, are rediscoveries; this is a concrete way of expressing, 65

The Nine Trans-Pavilions Each of the nine chapters “represents a Pavilion in itself, or a Trans-Pavilion, in the trans-national sense, which recalls the historical organisation of the Biennale into pavilions, the number of which has never ceased to grow since the end of the 1990s. From the “Pavilion of Artists and Books” to the “Pavilion of Time and Infinity”, these nine episodes tell a story that is often discursive and at times paradoxical, with detours that mirror the world’s complexities, a multiplicity of approaches and a wide variety of practices. The Exhibition is intended as an experience, extroversion as movement from the self to the other, towards a common space and the less definable dimensions, so opening to the possibility of neo-humanism. The intent is to convey a positive and prospective energy aimed at young artists, which at the same time brings new attention to artists who already have passed away, or who are still misunderstood by the wider public, despite the importance of their work.

“Art and artists are, therefore, placed at the centre of the Exhibition which begins by examining their methods and the way they create art, between idleness and action, between otium and negotium,” explains Macel. A series of parallel events will enliven the Exhibition, following the same premise, that of placing the artists at the centre of the exhibition.

Past and future in the photos

1780, Italian Journey: in Goethe’s words, the Royal Palace of Caserta resembled a fresco: “The site is uncommonly fine, on one of the most fertile plains in the world, and yet the gardens trench on the mountain. From these an aqueduct brings down an entire river, to supply water to the palace and the district; and the whole can, on occasion, be thrown on some artificially-arranged rocks, to form a most glorious cascade”.

Two hundred years later, George Lucas used it in Episodes I and II of Star Wars to serve as the palace on Naboo, the home planet of Queen Amidala, who has the delicate face of Natalie Portman. Past and future are beautifully crystalized in these photos by Massimo Listri. The palace, built for Charles VII of Naples, and designed by the 18th century architect Luigi Vanvitelli to outshine the magnificence of Versailles, is portrayed in all its majestic beauty. A baroque masterpiece of marble, gold and stucco, it entrances the eye with a succession of niches and vaults, of endless corridors opening into salons that seem to still echo with the lively sounds of princely festivities. Here time seems to have bowed down to the harmony of the rooms, to then melt away in silence. Nothing restores this sensation quite like Listri’s images. This delight for the eyes continues into the grounds, the natural complement to the palace, and the spectacular canal with its series of six fountains, richly embellished with statues, ponds and waterfalls, culminating in the Diana and Actaeon Fountain at the foot of the hillside, where Massimo’s gaze becomes indulgent, almost complicit. He leaves us with a longing for these places and images that speak of beauty made of timeless spaces.

One of Florences leading photography archives has open its treasures to the city

A book rich in rare photographs and precious essays and with a captivating title- Fashion in Florence through the lens of Archivio Foto Locchi- offers an uncommon view of Florence in black and white.

One hundred incredible shots capture the “Renaissance gem” in the years after the Second World War, when the city enjoyed a period of revival thanks to the elegant fabrics, the stylish accessories and original models created by dressmakers who turned into fashion designers, with the generous support of great Florentine patrons who were able to attract the attention of the already-famous Parisian couturiers, such as Dior and Schiaparelli, and Hollywood movie stars.

The gentleman behind the birth of Italy’s fashion industry in the forties and fifties was Giovanni Battista Giorgini, who served as a link between high society circles and the rising stars of fashion in the years of the economic boom, by “inventing” the fashion shows held in Palazzo Pitti’s White Room.

A real, lively and innovative Florence, far from its glossy brochure image, is the backdrop for the pictures by Archivio Storico Foto Locchi (an extraordinary historical archives collection of over five million photographs from the 1920s to the present day, curated by Silvano Corcos, the driving force behind the Florentine photographic studio), 80

An exhibition exploring the world of local artisans and craftsmen, dressmakers and leather workers, shoemakers and milliners, an army of talented and creative people that worked under the “orders” of brilliant fashion designers such as Pucci, Ferragamo and Gucci, Schuberth, Capucci and the Fontana Sisters. Although production is industrialized, there are still departments where automation goes hand in hand with craftsmanship and hand-assembly. Bespoke leather interiors and the search for materials and accessories in collaboration with other leading fashion and technical brands rely on the expertise of those working at Maserati.

One example is the Quattroporte, which following restyling is available in a number of versions, one of which, the GranLusso, features bespoke Ermedgildo Zegna silk interiors. Leading Italian design house Pininfarina, a name that combines entrepreneurship and genius, is behind the sleek styling of the Gran Turismo. The artisanal attention to detail goes hand in hand with the modernity of the 96 LEDs used for the rear lights. The current Ghibli, the latest version of a car first built 40 years ago, is supremely luxurious, with leather interiors available in three colours, a choice of premium sound systems and a three-spoke steering wheel with controls for interacting with the multimedia functions.

Sports utility in Maserati terms is the Levante, a crossover SUV with all-wheel drive system, active air suspension and shock absorbers featuring continuous damping variation. Four historic buildings on Via Andegari have been converted by architects Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel into a wonderful Milanese home for its highend guests staying in Milan.

How did you do it?

Milanese people are always willing to embrace newness and different cultures. At the Mandarin Oriental, Milan, the elegance of Milanese design blends wonderfully with the attention to details typical of Oriental culture. Some Italian and Milanese dishes on our restaurants’ menus have been reinvented by drawing inspiration from traditional Asian ingredients and the spa is the only place in Milan that offers a holistic approach to wellbeing, with treatments based on the Feng Shui philosophy and designed to bring one’s energies back to balance.

Very simple and clear rules related to the Oriental tradition of which we are proud ambassadors. Upon their arrival, our guests are welcomed with a cup of white ginger, saffron and basil tea, our rooms and suite rooms are all furnished according to the Feng Shui philosophy and we offer an Oriental Breakfast menu (chicken congee, an assortment of dim sum, noodles…).

We also pay great attention to small details: for instance, we never assign a room with number four or on the fourth floor to our Asian guests and we make sure that the welcoming bouquet doesn’t contain white flowers.

THE RESTAURANT The Mandarin Oriental hotel group boasts the highest number of Michelin stars and the Seta restaurant, run by Chef Antonio Guida, is no exception, having earned two stars in two years.

Chef, how have you introduced Asian ingredients in your cuisine?

I am a great admirer of Oriental culinary culture and I enjoyed adding the best Oriental spices and Asian flavors to some dishes and adopting special cooking methods typical of far-away countries.

What services best express hospitality to Chinese guests?

I believe that what everyone expects from us Italians is our great sense of warmth and hospitality. Some typical Oriental foods, however, are served with drinks at aperitivo time and are available on the room service menu, from noodle soup to dim sum to the delicious spring rolls that are a favorite with our guests.

THE SPA The Mandarin Oriental brand has achieved the highest standard of excellence with its exclusive and very sophisticated spas. The Mandarin Oriental, Milan’s spa is a haven of relaxation and meditation.

We asked the spa manager ,Anna Rita Di Giacomo, how Chinese heritage is expressed at the spa.

We make use of exclusive protocols developed with the collaboration of Chinese doctors and performed by our therapists, under the supervision of our in-house Chinese medicine expert Peiqin Zhao, who is available to meet with our guests by appointment. Our Oriental Heritage is also expressed by taking care of our guests, giving great pleasure to them and exceeding all their expectations.

The marriage of age-old traditions and innovation, could you give an example?

Mandarin Oriental’s signature spa therapies have been devised to provide guests with unique spa experiences. Each treatment is based on determining the guest’s individual predominant element and designed to restore balance with the other elements, through massages and essential oils to energize the body and mind. Particularly innovative is the Digital Wellness Escape, created to provide disconnection from digital devices and connection with one’s inner self, through treatments and additional activities that encourage the rediscovery of silence and inner communication.

Opened in 2010 in Milan’s Sempione district, Bon Wei was one of the first restaurants in Italy to offer authentic Chinese haute cuisine with top-quality ingredients and an international approach. It was something absolutely new for Milan, to the extent that it was immediately included in the Michelin Guide. We met Le Zhang, son of stellar Chef Guoqing Zhang, and long-time manager of Bon Wei, which in recent months he has shared ownership of with founders Yike Weng and his wife Chiara Wang Pei, natives of Zhejiang.

What is your restaurant’s signature dish?

Our “Peking Duck” is extremely popular. We glaze it ourselves, and it is always available also in individual portions, which is a rarity in restaurants.

Another one is “Sautéed Turbot with vegetables”, delicate turbot sautéed in the wok with seasonal vegetables and bamboo, and served on its fragrant fried skin.

For some years you have added the commitment of bringing the variety of your regional cuisine to Italy. How did the project start?

In a certain sense it was the natural evolution of our restaurant. If at first we wanted to demonstrate that Chinese food could also be high class, once we had got this message across we worked – together with an excellent partner, the Italy China Foundation – to show that Chinese cuisine is not just the universally known Cantonese, but that there are many regional specialties.

According to the China Daily, there are about 40,000 traditional Chinese recipes. What direction did you take?

We began with China’s 8 gastronomic regions, choosing recipes that first of all were replicable in Italy with regard to availablity of quality ingredients. In drawing up the menu, we always considered the seasons and a balanced choice. After two years of work, we put together a menu with 24 regional specialties that customers will find on the table from March, along with the restaurant’s usual menu Who are your typical customers?

Generally high end. Many businessmen, but also just foodies who want a special evening. We also have a number of celebrities who know that their privacy is ensured here.

Have you ever had important Chinese customers?

Certainly, Zhang Jindong’s Suning Group, now owners of Inter Milan, for example.

Chinese food and wine, a difficult union for a cuisine designed for tea and beer. Yet your wine list stands out for its care and attention.

This is no longer true.

The Chinese have learned to drink wine, and drink good wine. Today’s Chinese dining culture includes pairing food with wine. And then there’s the ever-versatile champagne.

Year of Establishment: 1968 This wine is made from grapes growing in one single town or hamlet, which enhances the characteristics of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area.
