2018 Girls State

ariah Lister and Morgan Scott participated in The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of Missouri June 24 through June 30, 2018, on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Seniors Lister and Scott were selected based on their high moral character, good sportsmanship, and leadership. Approximately 800 girls from various Missouri counties attended this year’s institute Above is senior Morgan Scott of government established to provide training in the functional aspects of citizenship. Mariah is the daughter of Doug and Shelly Lister. Morgan is the daughter of James and Julie Scott.
Two New School Resource Officers Join the District
G
rain Valley schools have three school resource officers that help provide safety, crime prevention and education throughout the district. The district has two new SROs this year. Officer Steven Thompson joined the district this year and serves as the school resource officer for Sni-A-Bar Elementary, Sni Valley Academy, and Grain Valley High School. Officer Shawnda HayesDunnell has also joined the district this year and serves as the SRO for South Middle School and Stony Point Elementary. Returning SRO Officer Daniel Iiams has served as a Grain Valley Schools Resource Officer for six years. Officer Iiams leads the D.A.R.E. program for the school district. He serves as the School Resource Officer for Prairie Branch Elementary, Matthews Elementary, North Middle School, and Early Childhood Center. The SRO program is a nationally accepted program that places law enforcement officers in schools. Since the officers are in the schools each day, they are able to connect with students and be an approachable resource for students during school as well as at after-school activities. •
The American Legion Auxiliary, Oak Grove United 379 was their sponsor. Both girls were also sponsored by FOCUS for Grain Valley, Grain Valley School District, and the Grain Valley Education Above is senior Mariah Lister Foundation. Sponsors afford the opportunity for students to participate in this nationally recognized program and are critical to its continued success. The event was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Missouri. Students who are juniors during the 2018-2019 academic year and are interested in attending should contact their high school counselor or visit the Missouri Girls State website at www.missourigirlsstate.org. The 2019 session will be held June 23-29. •
