National Merit Semifinalist Colin Beal

Senior Colin Beal

G

rain Valley High School senior Colin Beal has earned recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Program as a National Merit Semifinalist for his exceptional performance on the PSAT exam last year. Colin becomes eligible to earn one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, valued at a total of $32 million.

Colin is the son of Kenny and Jill Beal.

He is on the leadership team of the Robotics Team, is a drill instructor for the Grain Valley Marching Eagles, and is in the Academic Bowl. After graduation, Colin intends to pursue a degree in mechanical, electrical, or

aerospace engineering. His short list for schools includes Texas A&M and Wichita State.

About 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

To become a Nation Merit Finalist, the next level of recognition,

semifinalists and their high schools submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received.

A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. •

Hollis + Miller Architects build Learnscape at Grain Valley High School

H

ollis + Miller Architects created a new Learnscape at Grain Valley High School. Each year the firm gives back to a community by planning and building an outdoor learning environment called a Learnscape. Grain Valley Schools were the fifth recipient of the firm’s annual Learnscape philanthropy program.

Architects worked with the administration, staff, and students to create a learning environment that is intended to engage students in creative and alternative learning methods while capturing the qualities of nature. The Learnscape is located in a wooded area just south of the high school.

Hollis + Miller worked with Propaganda3, MKEC Engineering, Inc., and SquareOne Studio to create the Learnscape.

Propaganda3 donated and implemented a unique mobile app to integrate technology into the curriculum. When teachers use this area, they will be able to access their lesson plans using the app. •

Grain Valley Schools launches new district logo

G

rain Valley Schools recently unveiled a new district logo.

Designed by Fire Engine Design Studio, the new branding is the result of research by the design team into our district and community to capture who we are and how we want to be seen by those who may be considering raising their family in our community. The school board has approved the new design, and soon you will start seeing the new look on the district website, social media outlets and district vehicles.

The new district logo has no bearing on our high school mascot, the mascots of our other schools, or related spirit wear. •

National Honor Society Diaper Relief Campaign

T

hrough the middle weeks of September, the World Committee of the National Honor Society held a drive to collect diapers for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The World Committee leaders, Brian Jones and Caleb McCain, saw a need for help and supplies in Houston and knew that Grain Valley could help.

They wanted to involve the whole community, which is where Jones and McCain thought of kicking off the diaper drive at Grain Valley’s home football game against Center high school. Jones says, “It was so amazing how fast this drive came together.

With so many people and businesses wanting to help, the drive kind of built itself.”

At the football game alone, volunteers collected almost 100 packages of diapers and almost $1,000 in monetary donations. “We involved Center High too and bribed them with free tickets if they donated to the drive,” said McCain when asked about the success of the drive. “We also had donation buckets at Grain Valley Market, Crossroads Church, and inside the school. All I have to say is it is so amazing to have such a giving community that is willing to help, not only NHS, but to help other communities that are struggling.”

2017 Girls State

M

eagan Hodges and Kiera Santulli participated in The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of Missouri June 25 through July 1, 2017, on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Santulli and Hodges were selected based on their high moral character, good sportsmanship, and leadership.

Approximately 750 girls from various Missouri counties attended this year’s institute of government established to provide training in the functional aspects of citizenship. Speakers at the event included U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, and Missouri First Lady Sheena Greitens. Kiera is the daughter of Darryl and Dana Hipsher. Megan is the daughter of Eddie and Melissa Hodges.

The American Legion Auxiliary, Oak Grove United 379 was their sponsor. Both girls were also sponsored by FOCUS for Grain Valley, Grain Valley School District, and the Grain Valley Education Foundation.

2017 Boys State

S

eniors Oakley Barham, Drake Bray, Henry Claus and Evan Goade participated in the American Legion Boys State of Missouri June 17-24 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Students were selected based on their leadership, citizenship, academics, and character during their junior year at Grain Valley High School.

Boys State is a pure democracy in that all participants may vote and are eligible to hold office. The program is designed to educate and train Missouri’s young leaders in functional citizenship, leadership, and government. Nearly 1,000 student leaders build an entire state government in a single week.

Missouri Boys State participants campaigned and elected leaders of its counties and cities. Bray was elected as Senator of Kohn City. Bray is the son of Brian and Jessica Bray. Goade was elected to City Council, Ward II of Gambrel City. Goade is the son of Jerry and Stephanie Goade. Claus held positions as a city manager and a lobbyist. Claus is the son of Lynea O’Hara and Wayne Claus.

While at Boys State, Barham held positions as Highway Patrol Lieutenant Colonel and Highway Patrolman.

Barham is the son of Derek and Heather Barham.

FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS

W

Soccer The soccer program finished their season with a record of 12-11. The team finished 2nd in the MRVC West conference standings.

W Football

The Grain Valley Eagles ended their season with an overall record of 9-3, and were unbeaten in the MRVC conference. The team won the Missouri River Valley Conference West title for the second year in a row.

Girls Golf The girls golf program won the MRVC West conference title and also won the MRVC conference tournament. Taylor Hileman was a Sectional Qualifier.

Girls Tennis The girls tennis program finished the season with a record of 122. They won their 10th straight MRVC West title and were MRVC tournament champions. Mikaela and Miranda Griechen were state qualifiers in doubles.

W Softball The softball program finished with a record of 14-16. They finished 3rd in the Greater Kansas City Softball Tournament as well as the Liberty Tournament.

W Cross Country The girls cross county program were MRVC West conference champions. Freshmen Valerie Holcomb was the individual conference champion and was a state qualifier.

The boys team raced in the prestigious Brooks Memphis Twilight Invitational against top teams from across the U.S., placing 17th of 58. The boys also had two All-District and sectional qualifying performances from Royce Fisher and Collin Clemens.

Volleyball The Eagles finished their season at 22-8-2.

The volleyball program finished 2nd in the MRVC West.

Cheerleading The Varisty Cheerleading Team won the MCCA State Championships in the Class 4-A Large division, receiving zero deductions. Allie Freeman, Lexie Canon, and Sophie Jons were named to the All-State Cheerleading Team.

National Honor Society Inducts New Members

N

ew members of NHS, made up of 12 seniors and 43 juniors, were inducted into the prestigious society on Wednesday, October 18th.

The ceremony consisted of a candle service, guest speaker Dr. Snow, the presentation of new inductees, the four pillars of National Honor Society, and a committee reveal. New inductees found out which committee they will be working with for the year and gained even more motivation to start helping Grain Valley and its surrounding communities.

New junior inductee Adison Richardson was placed in the Greater KC committee and is so excited to get out of her comfort zone to help the people who need it the most. “Walking across the stage reassured me that this is actually happening. I am so honored to be part of this organization that is known for its service projects, and I just can’t wait to be a part of it,” said Richardson after induction. Jackson Hoover, another junior inductee placed in the THON

committee, says he can’t wait to throw the best dance-a-thon the school has ever seen.

“Holding that candle made me realize that, this is my time to make a difference; so, why not help the hospital that has helped us all in some type of way? I am super pumped to work with my committee and give back to a place who needs and deserves it” said Hoover.

New sponsors of National Honor Society Kourtney Michael and Julie Taylor are excited to get this new group of kids going. Being a mentor for all participating students, Taylor says she cannot wait to see all of the ways in which her students can reach out to the community. President of NHS, Clay Osceola says he has heard so many good things about the incoming members, “It is so comforting to see their drive for service.” This is going to be a great year of change in the high school’s National Honor Society. • Written by Senior Abby Boren

Middle School Student Establishes Little Free Library

N

orth Middle School student Jack Martin used his Genius Hour project to give back to the Grain Valley community. During his 7th grade year, Jack proposed to have a Little Free Library in the Grain Valley community. The Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free exchange. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. Through his efforts, the Blue Springs Elks Lodge gave a generous donation to help fund the box/structure and books, and the City of Grain

Valley eagerly supported the placement of the library at City Hall.

Little Free Library is a non-profit organization that provides support to organizers like Jack Martin. The group provides free building instructions and online resources. Little Free Libraries has over 50,000 neighborhood book exchanges in over 70 countries.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and book drive was held in front of City Hall on July 24. Local officials were on hand to kick off the start of the community’s Little Free Library. The Grain Valley community now has 24/7 access to books at the Little Free Library. Please feel free to visit the library to borrow a book and don’t forget to leave one in return! •

rain Valley High School senior Bailey Kidd had an out of this world experience last Spring when she attended the NASA Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama, from March 4-10. Bailey was one of the 270 lucky teens from all across the world that were able to attend this incredible camp. In order to attend the camp, she had to write 3 essays explaining why she wanted to go to the camp and what she would do with this opportunity.

After reading her responses, Honeywell FM&T awarded Bailey with a full scholarship to the camp.

While attending, Bailey was able to learn more about engineering and earn one college science credit. In addition to all the mathematics and

science, Bailey learned leadership skills that she can use outside of high school. “ When we weren’t building rockets or making heat shields out of tinfoil,” Bailey says, “we were improving our presentation skills, listening to famous guest speakers, and learning how to work as a team in stressful environments.”

Kidd also had fun meeting teens from Mexico, to Africa, and Romania. “The best part, in my opinion, was learning from all the other teens there-about their culture and lifestyle,” Bailey exclaimed. To this day she still keeps in touch with her new friends.

ecently, Valley Kids before and after school program at Sni-A-Bar Elementary created and distributed Kindness Rocks in the Grain Valley area as one of its community service projects. Students painted their own rocks and added words that meant kindness to them.

Students included words such as “Be happy,” “You are beautiful,” “Love,” “Hope,” “Smile,” etc. A few students even personalized their rocks for the police and the fire departments.

Valley Kids team member Valerie Palecek spread the kindness in the community by placing the rocks throughout town. A few locations included the community center, police department, Grain Valley Market, Subway,

Casey’s General Store, and the park just to name a few.

Valley Kids staff shared responses that showed up on Facebook with the students. Some members of the community took rocks home, some people created their own rocks and placed them in other locations; and one woman from out of town even picked up a rock at Casey’s General Store and said she was going to take it home to Colorado to spread the kindness! •

Caleb Krell named Missouri Player of the Week

P

repsKC and Papa John’s named Grain Valley High School senior Caleb Krell the “Missouri Player of the Week” for the week of October 9th. Krell has excelled as a running back for the Grain Valley Eagles football team. He had an outstanding night during Grain Valley’s 27-12 win over Excelsior Springs, accumulating 152 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. •

les C heer Team he Grain TCheerleading Valley Varsity Wins team has won the Stat MCCA State Championship once again. This is e Ch the fourteenth time they have won since they started amp competing, and the eleventh time since Coach Delanne Carlson ions hip became the head coach in 2008.

In July, Grain Valley Varsity Cheer qualified to travel to Columbia, MO to compete in the MCCA State Championships, in the Class 4-A Large division held at the University of Missouri campus. The cheerleaders practiced all summer for this event with the help of summer weights and three-hour practices twice a week during the school year. They also worked hard cheering on the football team, using that time to practice stunts they used in their routine.

In preparation for their performance at the State Competition on October 28, the girls warmed up their stunts and tumbling and were able to walk through their routine before taking the floor. They went onto the floor and executed a clean routine with great energy. The team received zero deductions and were feeling confident for awards.

Before awards started, Grain Valley members Allie Freeman, Lexie Canon, and Sophie Jons were named to the All-State Cheerleading Team. This award is a top skill based award judged by a separate panel during their team performance at the State Championships. Cheerleading coaches may nominate up to three candidates to be judged each year.

When it was time for awards, the cheerleaders were nervous but excited to see where they placed. Grain Valley received first in their class and couldn’t have been happier with the outcome.

Girls Who Code Club

G

irls Who Code is a non-profit organization founded by Reshma Saujani.

Its purpose is to teach girls computing and programming skills to increase the number of women in the computer science job circuit. The mission of Girls Who Code is to “close the gender gap in technology” one girl at a time!

The girls of Grain Valley who participate in this club are creating a website that is all about being “Perfectly Imperfect.” Different groups focus on a different part of the website creation. Each girl has a role: teacher, builder, programmer, or storyteller.

By working together, the girls have learned how to program apps and fix problems in their coding, which is called debugging.

In this club, girls not only learn coding and computing skills, they also learn that when working together, they can accomplish anything. •

GVHS Athletic Hall of Fame 2017 New Inductees

Grain Valley High School inducted two new members into the GVHS Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the Homecoming Football game in October. 2012 Graduate, Tucker Pauley and 1949 graduate, Kenneth B. Gibler were both bestowed with this honor.

n Friday, September 29, 2017, Grain Valley High School added two new inductees to the Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame: Kenneth B. Gibler and Tucker Pauley. To be nominated into the Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame, there must be documentation of athletic achievements such as all-conference, all-district, all-state, school or state records, and other athletic achievements. Then, the nominations are viewed and voted on by committees, and a candidate is chosen to be inducted into Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame.

Kenneth B. Gibler 1949 Grain Valley High School graduate, Kenneth B. Gibler, was a three-year, three-sport athlete (football, basketball, and softball) at Grain Valley High School. Gibler served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1954 and graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1957 where he lettered four years in football and two years in track.

Kenneth B. Gibler received many different athletic awards throughout his careers: 1948 Napier Football Award Winner, 1980 NAIA Hall of Fame Inductee-Athlete, and 1990 NAIA Hall of Fame Inductee-Football Coach. He coached at Blue Springs High School, Northern Arizona University, and Missouri Valley College. After an accomplished high school, college, and coaching career, Kenneth B. Gibler lost his battle with spinal cancer in Marshall, Missouri, on November 23, 1990, at the age of 59. The family of Mr. Gibler accepted the award on his behalf.

Tucker Pauley The second inductee of the night was 2012 Grain Valley High School graduate, Tucker Pauley.

Tucker Pauley was a three-year letterman in football and a four-year letterman in wrestling. In football, Pauley received the accomplishments in 2010 of MRVC 1st Team AllConference, 2nd Team All-Area, and KMZU Dream Team. Also, in 2011, Pauley was named MFCA 3rd Team All-State, 1st Team All-Area, MRVC 1st Team All-Conference, MRVC AllConference Academic Award, KMZU Dream Team, and finally, the Ironman Award.

During his wrestling career at Grain Valley High School, Pauley accomplished 2010-11 MRVC 2nd Team

All-Conference and All-Conference Academic Awards, and 2011-12 state medalist and MRVC All-Conference Academic Award.

At Grain Valley High School, Pauley also participated in show choir, National Honors Society, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After high school, Pauley’s athletic career did not stop.

He attended Baker University where he played football. During his college career, Pauley was 2014 HAAC 2nd Team All-Conference, 2014 NAIA FCS Quarterfinals “Outstanding Defensive Player” Shawn Trager Award, 2015 AFCA All-American, and finally, the 2015 HAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. After maintaining a 3.0 GPA and graduating in 2016, Pauley became a Grad Assistant football coach at Baker University.

ueen Candidate Kelsey Gauldin is the daughter of Steve and Stephanie Gauldin. Kelsey is involved in student government, volleyball, National Honor Society and has previously written for The Eagle’s View.

She has received the NAIA Champion Character award for Grain Valley High School. Kelsey plans to attend Pittsburg State to major in media communications and go into radio journalism or education to be a high school language arts teacher.

Grain Valley High School’s 2017 Homecoming Queen Jenny Carpio is the daughter of David and Gloria Carpio.

Jenny is involved in student government, National Honor Society, and tennis. Jenny plans to attend the University of Missouri and major in political science. She then plans to attend Mizzou’s law school to pursue her dream of becoming an immigration lawyer.

Queen Candidate Paityn Forgey is the daughter of Jon and Jennifer Forgey. Paityn is involved in yearbook, Eagle Media Productions, and is a member of National Honor Society. She plans to attend a 4-year college to major in accounting and would like to go into public accounting after college.

Queen Candidate Afton Ehlen is the daughter of Todd and Kelli Ehlen. Afton is involved in National Honor Society, cross country, and Eagle Media Productions while being Academic All-Conference all four years of high school. Afton plans to attend the University of Missouri to major in radiology.

King Candidate Aidan Callaghan is the son of Craig and Vanessa Callaghan. Aidan is involved in band and has an interest in theatre, dancing, and for art in general. Aidan has received a Cappie award for choreography and has had theater reviews published in the Kansas City Star and other newspapers. After graduation, he plans to attend a college to get a degree in pharmacy.

King Candidate Nathan Snow is the son of Dr. Marc and Pamela Snow. Nathan is involved in band and choir. He has earned first place in district and state competitions for both percussion and concert snare solo. He has also placed first in state and Academic All-Conference for choir and band.

Nathan plans to attend Southwest Baptist University to earn a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy. He then plans to attend Mizzou to earn a doctoral degree in physical therapy.

King Candidate Caleb Krell is the son of Jacob and Amanda Krell and Marleny Pickinpaugh. Caleb is involved in football and has helped with high school sports and activities that give back to the community. Caleb plans to attend a university to go into pre-med or biochemistry.

Grain Valley High School’s 2017 Homecoming King Tate Collum is the son of Shaun and Marcea Collum. He is involved in football, baseball, and basketball. Tate is the quarterback for the Grain Valley Eagles football team. He won Offensive MVP in 2016 as well as All-District secondteam quarterback. Tate plans to play football in college and go into sports management or into dental school to become a dentist. •

rain Valley High School alumni enjoyed Homecoming on September 29 as the Eagles football team defeated the Odessa Bulldogs. Grain Valley graduates were encouraged to stop by the Alumni Tent for free food and drinks and to reconnect with their classmates.

Ben Totta selected for World Leadership Congress

G

Totta was one of 450 students from across the United States and around the globe to participate in the eight-day leadership event. Students had the opportunity to work with thought-leaders in a variety of fields and participate in hands-on leadership learning and service opportunities. The World Leadership Congress worked with students to help them discover their own personal leadership potential while becoming a responsible and responsive citizen.

rain Valley High School junior Ben Totta received the rare opportunity to represent Grain Valley and the state of Missouri at the World Leadership Congress in Chicago this past summer.

Totta attended the Missouri Leadership Seminar in June held on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

During the seminar, he was awarded the full scholarship to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth World Leadership Congress as the official representative from the state of Missouri at Loyola University in Chicago July 2229, 2017.

Totta is the son of Frank and Trish Totta. He is the member of the National Honor Society, HOSA, Speech and Debate, and Yearbook Staff. • Junior Ben Totta was selected to participate in the World Leadership Congress last July along with chosen topnotch students from around the world.

Team Member Spotlight Heather Wilson - Prairie Branch Counselor

H

eather Wilson is in her seventeenth year in public education, including three years as a parent educator with the Parents as Teachers program and ten years as a classroom teacher in grades kindergarten through fourth grades. This is her fourth year as school counselor at Prairie Branch Elementary School.

Mrs. Wilson was nominated to be our featured team member and shares her thoughts with us on impacting students in Grain Valley Schools. Some say they go into teaching because of their love for learning. I believe my passion comes more from my love for children and the desire I have to make an impact in their lives. I was able to do this for more than ten years in the classroom. However, I began to realize that I wanted to do more. I would see children come into my classrooms struggling for different reasons. I had to quickly make sure they were okay in order to move on with our day, yet knowing there had to be more going on than I was aware of. It was this desire that encouraged me to go back to school and become a school counselor.

Starting my fourth year in this position, it is exactly where I’m meant to be! I’m here to help students develop the skills they need in order to become resilient and problem solvers of their own.

My belief is that a positive relationship or connection with a child is one of the most effective tools in helping him or her become successful in school and in life. In my position as a counselor, I am given the opportunity not only to build those relationships with children but also with their parents and their teachers. It’s so important

Grain Valley has recognized the importance of this and has begun the process of creating trauma-sensitive schools. This can be a long journey that takes time in order to become successful. I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to be part of a district task force that will help with this process.

Although Grain Valley continues to grow each year, it still has the feeling of a small town community. I love the fact that I can go to district meetings and see familiar faces of those who work in other buildings. People call each other by names and you never feel lost in a crowd.

I was completely surprised to learn that I had been nominated and chosen for this recognition. I work in a district with so many incredible and passionate people who are making a difference in the lives of children each and every day. I am honored and humbled to know that others must recognize that same passion in me as I strive to ensure that our students feel safe and have the skills they need to be successful. •

STATE COMPETITION

The Griechen Sisters: Their Road to State This season, two tennis seniors, Mikaela and Miranda Griechen, made it to the state competition in Class 2 tennis doubles after playing for almost 2 1/2 years. The 43rd MSHSAA Girl Tennis Championships were held October 12-14 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri.

“After our freshman year, we quit volleyball. We decided to pick up a tennis racquet and when we started playing we fell in love with the game.”

This would be a decision that they would never regret, as they advanced to state in October. “We couldn’t have done it without Coach Draper, friends, and family supporting us.”

“It meant a lot to us. We worked really hard and it paid off,” stated the twins.

Grain Valley High School is proud to have some of the best athletes in the state of Missouri and the Griechens have proved that to us this October. •

The Griechens have been working toward state since this past summer perfecting every move.

Grain Valley Board of Education receives Governance Award

T

he Grain Valley School District Board of Education received the Missouri School Boards’ Association’s 2017 Governance Team Award. This prestigious award is based on the board’s outstanding commitment to ongoing professional development in areas such as student achievement, school law, finance, board operations, and contemporary issues in education. The award also recognizes their commitment to regional and statewide leadership and to active participation

in legislative advocacy for public schools and the students they serve.

Grain Valley was one of twenty-four Missouri school boards who received this year’s award. The 2017 Governance Team Award winners were recognized on June 3 at MSBA’s Leadership Summit at the Lake of the Ozarks. •

Cally Beckman Honored

by Daughters of the American Revolution

R

ecent Grain Valley High School graduate Cally Beckman was chosen to receive the DAR “Good Citizen Award” given by the Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter at Fort Osage this past summer.

Students at Grain Valley High School are nominated by their teachers and have demonstrated the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Cally is the daughter of Cheryl Beckman. •

STATE COMPETITION

Cross Country Athlete Valerie Holcomb Represents Grain Valley at State One of Grain Valley’s very own, freshman Valerie Holcomb, competed in the MSHSAA Class 4 State Championship race on Saturday, November 4th. Holcomb placed in the top 30 at sectionals advancing her to the State competition where she represented Grain Valley.

Holcomb stated, “I was very anxious and excited, the whole experience was almost surreal.” Being the only representative from Grain Valley High School as a freshman was a pretty big deal.

The mission of the Grain Valley Education Foundation, 501c3 nonprofit, is to enhance, supplement or complement programs and activities provided by the district, and to assist students to help them reach their full potential in their K-12 experience, at the next level, and in life.

OUR Vision...

Is to provide all Grain Valley students innovative opportunities to help them reach their full potential and become productive members of the community.

Grain Valley Education Foundation Support for new and existing school and district organizations over the past 12 months: Helped cover the freight costs to transport band instruments and gear to NYC and back for the Grain Valley Marching Eagles’ participation in the 2016 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Provided seed money to start a “Girls on the Run” program at Matthews Elementary School. Shared the cost of the 2016 Holiday Reception for all district employees with Major Saver.

Supported the transportation department’s Safe Riders program and Bus Driver Appreciation. Contributed to the STEM Night (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) at Prairie Branch Elementary allowing for the inclusion of the “Mad Science” program. Shared the cost of feeding students

bby Boren, senior, is the daughter of David and Michelle Boren.

Abby is a second-year member of the yearbook staff. She is also a member of show choir and FCA, and she is a THON executive for NHS. Outside of GVHS, she is an active member of her youth group at Christ United Methodist Church in Independence, MO. This is her fourth time writing for The Eagle’s View. After graduating, Abby will attend Northwest Missouri State University to major in psychology, so she can pursue a career in counseling and career services.

ddy Blackmore, sophomore, is the daughter of Bryce and Betty Blackmore. Addy is a first-year member of the GVHS yearbook staff. She is also a member of the track and tennis teams. This is her first time writing for The Eagle’s View. After graduation in 2020, Addy would like to be a cultural anthropologist.

enny Carpio, senior, is the daughter of David and Gloria Carpio. Jenny is a first-year member of the yearbook staff. She is also a member of show choir, NHS, and student government.

This is her second time writing for The Eagle’s View. After graduating, Jenny will attend the University of Missouri to major in political science, and then she is planning to apply to the University of Missouri Law School, so she can become an immigration lawyer.

elsey Gauldin, senior, is the daughter of Steve and Stephanie Gauldin. Kelsey is a year-round competitive volleyball player and captain of the varsity volleyball team at GVHS, and a member of NHS. She is also a third-year staff member for The Talon. This is her fourth time writing for The Eagle’s View. Gauldin is planning to pursue a career in broadcast journalism at Pitt State University.

ackson Sallee, sophomore, is the son of Rob and Charla Sallee. Jackson is a first-year member of the Eagle Media Productions staff. He is also a member of band, the Old School Dungeoneers Guild, and FCA. Outside of GVHS, he is an active member of his boy scout troop. This is his first time contributing to The Eagle’s View. After graduating, Jackson would like to become a web developer.

iera Santulli, senior, is the daughter of Darryl and Dana Hipsher. Santulli is a third-year member of The Talon and GVHS Yearbook staffs. She is also a member of NHS and student government, a four-year member of the varsity cheer squad and a member of FCCLA. This is her third time writing for The Eagle’s View. After graduation, Kiera will be attending Missouri State University.

iz Swafford, junior, is the daughter of Brett and Emily DeBerry. Liz is a second-year member of the yearbook staff. She is also a varsity cheerleader and member of HOSA and the theater department. This is her first time writing for The Eagle’s View. After her 2019 graduation, Liz hopes to attend a fouryear university to major in psychology.

en Totta, junior, is the son of Frank and Trish Totta. Ben is a secondyear member of the GVHS yearbook staff. He is also involved in NHS, HOSA, theater, and speech & debate at the high school. This is his second time contributing to The Eagle’s View. When Ben graduates in 2019, he would like to become a biomedical engineer.

Pictured right: The Marching Eagles were named Division Champions at the prestigious Bands of America St. Louis Super Regional competing against bands from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado. This earned them an invitation to the open class finals where they competed against some of the largest bands and schools in the midwest.

Grain Valley Marching Eagles placed 5th out of 66 bands.
