National Honor Society helps out at Rock The Parkway to benefit Children's Mercy
R
ock the Parkway is a yearly half marathon and 5k in downtown Kansas City. This year, over 3,600 runners from all over Missouri and Kansas came to participate in one of the city's biggest marathons. The 13-mile scenic course that runs along downtown's historic Ward Parkway is one of Missouri’s most beautiful courses. The event, put on by the Kansas City Running Company, works to benefit the local Children’s Mercy Hospital. This partnership creates opportunities for the hospital to give medical care to Kansas City’s children through the money raised. As one of Children’s Mercy’s largest events throughout the year, they work with volunteers and runners to make this event a success. Grain Valley High School’s chapter of the National Honors Society worked alongside other volunteers to help the runners on the course. Set up at aid stations along the way, NHS members worked to help the runners stay hydrated as they ran. The members handed out water and Gatorade to runners as the passed and cheered them on. GVHS students also helped with directing traffic and worked to keep the course clean. Working with event coordinators, the students helped to not only support runners as they participated, but also support Children's Mercy as they raised money through the event. • Written by junior Cassidy Grother.

Mock Prom Night Car Crash
P
rom is a time for both seniors and juniors to all get-together, dance, and have a blast. But, when some people take their fun to the extreme, what is suppose to be the best night of these students high school career can turn into their worst nightmare. In early April, the high school’s resource officer, Officer Thompson, the Grain Valley theater department, and eight juniors and seniors put on a mock car crash to show the effects of driving under the influence. These students were put into a full simulation with costumes, makeup, and actual wrecked cars provided by Santa Fe Tow. After only two days of practice, the students performed the simulation for

their fellow juniors and seniors. Not only were there cars for the students, but they also provided real ambulances, police cars, a fire truck, a hearse, and a LifeFlight helicopter. With the help of this, the simulation became more real for both the students watching and the students participating. Being able to see their fellow classmates getting arrested, put into a hearse, helicopter, and an ambulance, affected students in a very emotional way. The school continues to put on this event in hopes that students will see what the consequences of driving under the influence are and that they will choose to have a safe prom. • Written by senior Liz Swafford.

South Middle School Students Volunteer to give back to the Community
O
n May 22, Grain Valley South Middle School upheld a tradition they have been doing for many years. Service day. They not only did community service for Grain Valley but also other surrounding places such as Blue Springs and Independence as well. Jim Myers, principal of South Middle School, says that “Service day gives students the opportunity to know what serving others feels like. It's putting the idea into kids' heads that service is valuable and gives back to the community.”
Students do many projects throughout the day such as going to the elementary schools to help with the field days, clean and pick up trash at surrounding parks, making blankets for nursing homes, making dog treats for animal shelters, and so much more. 6th grade teachers Kelcy Byers (Science) and Kathryn Sorensen (Math) took their classes to Monkey Mountain, a park in Grain Valley, to pick up trash and clean up the park to help do their part. 6th grade reading teacher Shannon Grubb and her class made blankets for a nursing home. Grubb's Aunt Jenna lives in the nursing home that the blankets are going to and she and her students wanted to do something nice for her and the rest of the residents in the nursing home. It was a good learning experience for the students and they also had fun along the way. Not only did they do service for their community but they also did service around their school as well. Art teacher Marjorie Fisher and a few of her 8th-grade students, Quinn Newgaard, Grace Brotherton, Sara Hubbard, Chloe Plummer, and Livvy Blackmore, painted an Eagle mural on the entrance wall coming into South Middle School. Many students also helped move teachers into new classrooms, help janitors clean up in the cafeteria, clean walls in the gym and so much more to get their school ready for summer and the upcoming school year. This is a tradition South Middle School hopes to continue for many years. “This is one of the best things we do at South Middle School and we hope to continue the tradition and hope it grows so we can be able to serve even more people and give back to our community.” Says principal Jim Myers. Not only is it a way to give back to the community but it is also a way to celebrate the end of the school year and have a little fun while doing so. • Written by sophomore Abby Castle.

M
atthews Elementary was named a Bronze Award honoree from the MU Center for School-Wide Positive Behavior Support for their implementation of Positive Behavior Supports at Tier 1, or the universal level, for all students. The Positive Behavior Support journey for Matthews Elementary began a year ago with a commitment to properly teach students expected behavior in various school situations, followed by a year of training and implementation by staff throughout the 2018-2019 school year. Positive behavior in students is encouraged through various ways and staff learn and practice intervention strategies to properly hold students accountable while addressing any needs that may be preventing the child from making good choices. Year one results include a reduction of inschool suspensions by 53.85% and a reduction of out-of-school suspensions by 53.49%. As a Bronze Award honoree, Matthews Elementary agrees to serve as a demonstration site for other Missouri schools interested in pursuing a similar path at their school. •
Author Phil Bildner visits with Grain Valley Students
W
hen you hear the name Phil Bildner the word ‘author’ probably comes to mind, but what about volunteer, optimist or visionary? Bildner is more than just the author of the popular young adult books “Busted” and “Playing the Field,” he also has started numerous organizations to help fellow authors as well as students. The Author Village, one of many organizations, helps authors coordinate their school visits and appearances. Even after becoming a full-time writer, Bildner wanted to continue working with students and did so by chaperoning volunteer visits to New Orleans to assist with the postHurricane Katrina recovery effort. Bildner now spends his time writing and traveling to schools all over the world to inspire reading and writing in the minds of students.
Pictured above author Phil Bildner visited with students about reading, writing, creativity and empathy.
Bildner was chosen to be the visiting author this year by the elementary school library media specialists. The librarians usually choose someone “who is a good speaker to all audiences” says Miss. Wight, the GVHS librarian. The visits are coordinated by the librarians as well, who contact the authors directly, usually through the author's websites and set up transportation, hotel stay, and meals. The speaker is usually chosen from a list of authors who also attend the local Children’s Lit Fest at UCM. While speaking to the students of Grain Valley, Bildner spoke of his work, his process, and his experience. But what made him stand out was that he spoke of other authors that had
inspired him. He not only promotes his work but theirs too. Bildner mentioned a student he taught when he was a teacher who never thought she was much of a writer. However, he told her that writing was what she was meant to do and she went on to write a book titled “ The Poet X” that ending up winning a National Book Award. One quote that Miss Wight said stuck out to her the most was when Bildner said, “no matter what you are or where you are in life, be the best you,” in reference to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Street Sweeper quote. Miss Wight said that Phil Bildners visit was not only inspirational to the students but to her as well, as he told everyone to “do good things and be good people.” • Written by sophomore Addy Blackmore.
