South Middle School Students and Staff give back to the Community
“T
his is my favorite day of the year!” seventh grade ELA teacher Shayla Keightley’s voice floats down the hall as teachers make their way into the building. When the bell rings the students bring a surge of energy, enthusiasm along with the scent of sunscreen into the building. This isn’t your ordinary end of the year field day. On Tuesday, May 22, 630 students along with teachers and staff members celebrated the last full day of the year giving back to the community that supports them throughout the school year. This year 19 groups planned and carried out service projects. The 6th grade

teams helped the City of Grain Valley ensure that the parks were in great shape for the start of summer. At the Butterfly Trail, students with Mrs. Gilbert picked up trash, pulled weeds and spread mulch in a flower bed. At the community center and Armstrong park, Mrs. Rivest and Mrs. Annin’s students cleaned up and planted flower beds while Mrs. Beyers and Miss Sorenson’s groups walked the trails at Monkey Mountain picking up trash. Mrs. Stowers accompanied another group of students to the Great Plains SPCA where they worked hard to ensure a clean and fun environment for the animals in the shelter. Back at school, Miss Alyea’s students created enrichment toys for shelter animals and Mrs. Jones’ students crafted chemo blankets.

Team 7A cleaned the Selvey Road Fishing -teacher Area and the South Shayla Keightley Boat Dock Area at Lake Jacomo and were advised by a Jackson County Parks and Recreation biologist about trash in the environment. They picked up several bags worth of trash along the shoreline, parking areas, paths, and picnic areas. The Eagle’s View 4
Several students from team 7B participated in a creek cleanup and crawdad count for the city of Independence. The students helped to clean up trash and remove invasive species. Mrs. Marcum’s class went to Sni-A-Bar Elementary to help teachers and staff with end of the year projects. The 7th graders working with Ms. Sheesly created patriotic centerpieces that Country Oak Village nursing home can display in their dining room. Team 8B also travelled to Lake Jacomo to assist Jackson County Parks and Recreation with clean up in the park. Ms. Grubb’s students went to the Redwood of Blue River nursing home where they read to the residents. Students who remained at school with Mrs. Rowland weeded planting beds, weeded sidewalks and planted various plants donated by 8th grade teachers. While students working with Mrs. Eide, Mrs. Black, and Mrs. Mehl cleaned up the south gardens, made dog treats, and helped staff with projects around the school. Mrs. Via and Mrs. Chrisman’s 6th - 8th grade students wrote thank you cards and prepared gifts and delivered them to 160 support staff, lunchroom, custodians, bus barn, operations, Central Office employees and staff around district who work behind the scenes everyday to make our district a fabulous place to work and go to school! 7th and 8th grade students sewed 115 childrens booklets for Parents As Teachers/Early Childhood to give to children in the community. Mrs. Wilson and several helpers assisted Mrs. Pierce in the Stony Point library where they took down and old bulletin board and put up a new one for the library; helped with inventory, and created a welcome message for her summer school students. Mrs. Andreas and the 8th grade show choir, Standing Ovations, traveled to each school to perform their spring show; highlighting the importance of hard work and dedication and the fun of doing something you love! A group of 7th and 8th grade students collected, washed, and sorted clothing and shoe donations for New House Shelter with Mr. Belzeski and Mrs. Hansen. •

Elementary Schools host Author Visits
T
he Grain Valley Elementary Librarians hosted author Kelly Milner Halls from Spokane, Washington on November 6, 2017. Third and fourthgrade students traveled to the high school auditorium to hear Ms. Halls’ presentation: Wonders of Weird. Ms. Above is author Kelly Milner Halls Halls spoke about how to think critically when writing nonfiction. Students were fascinated by her research on Bigfoot and other cryptids.

A
small group of students at South Middle School participated in Ms. Wilson’s book club this year. After reading Mr. Lemoncello’s Great Library Race by Chris Grabenstein, they were able to chat with the author using Skype. The Mr. Lemoncello books are a lot a fun and are filled with all kinds of puzzles and wacky inventions, so the kids had a great time talking to Mr. Grabenstein and finding out where he gets all of his crazy ideas! Since they solved the final puzzle in the book, they were even able to enter a contest where the winner will get to name a character in the upcoming Mr. Lemoncello book! •

Author Bridget Heos visited Sni-A-Bar Library on May 10, 2018. She spoke to kindergarten and firstgrade students about writing picture books. She read aloud her Building Block Picture Book Award Winner Mustache Baby with students performing sound effects.
Ms. Heos has written over 95 nonfiction books, many of which she talked about in her presentation: Amazing Animals to second and third grade. Fourth and fifth grade heard the presentation: Nonfiction: Stronger than Steel, Stranger than Fiction, in which she spoke about how scientists are using DNA research on spider silk to make better sutures, and stronger/lighter bullet-proof vests. She even talked about how they are using DNA to solve crimes that happened over a hundred years ago. •

Special Olympics Missouri State Indoor Games 2018
T
he Special Olympics Missouri State Indoor Games were held in St. Joseph, Missouri on March 16-17, 2018. Athletes got to travel away from home and to help gain a sense of independence as they participated in indoor games including basketball and bowling. Over 3,000 athletes, coaches, and chaperones attended the event. Students recognized as KC Scholars
G
rain Valley High School juniors Erin Gillihan and John “Trey” Hodson have been awarded scholarships of $10,000 per year renewable from KC Scholars for up to $50,000 for each student.
KC Scholars is comprised of three program components that provide both financial assistance and support services for low- and modest-income students and adults: Traditional, Adult Learner, and College Savings Account/Match. Over 70 members of the Kansas City community, representing multiple sectors, worked together for nearly a year to develop KC Scholars and, between July 2016 and July 2017, a 15-member Implementation Committee served in an advisory capacity. KC Scholars was incubated at the Kauffman Foundation and is now its own 501(c)(3) entity with a community-based Board of Directors.

The mission of KC Scholars is to increase postsecondary education attainment in the greater Kansas City area. KC Scholars will provide the means – through scholarships, financial incentives to promote college savings, and support services – for low- and modest-income students and adults needing access to pursue and complete a postsecondary credit-bearing credential or degree.

By doing so, KC Scholars will improve the educational attainment, economic independence, quality of the workforce, and participation in community activities in greater Kansas City. Annually, at least 250 traditional awards will be made by KC Scholars. Families of juniors are encouraged to watch for this remarkable new annual scholarship opportunity. •
GVHS Juniors place in SkillsUSA State Competition
J
uniors Brianna Carter and Jordan Humphrey earned medals in the SkillsUSA 2018 State Competition in April. Jordan earned 1st Place in Culinary Arts and Brianna earned 3rd Place in CSI.
SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving high school, college and middle school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations, and for further education. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. Brianna and Jordan are two of 79 Grain Valley High School students who participate in instructional programs part time at the Career & Technical Center (CTC) at the Fort Osage School District campus. •

SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS Boys Golf The boys golf program finished third in the MRVC with a dual record of 6 wins and 4 losses.
Girls Soccer The girls soccer program had a tremendously successful season. They won the MRVC conference title and finished the year with a record of 22-4-1. The soccer program won a district title, the Platte County tournament, and the Raytown South tournament. Seniors Rylan Childers, Marrisa Schmitt, Kailey Boyer, sophomore Reagan Beeding, and freshman Reana Childers each earned MRVC West All-Conference.
Boys and Girls Track Both the boys’ and girls’ track team finished their final season in the MRVC as conference champions. The boys won a district championship while the girls finished as runner-up. The Eagles qualified 19 athletes to compete in the state track meet, and 7 events ended up on the medal stand. Individual medalists included: Ethan Macoubrie (High Jump-2nd, Javelin-8th), Marcus East (100 meter-8th), Braeden Mahurin (110 hurdles-4th). The Eagles also won medals in the following relays: Boys 4X100, Boys 4X200, and Girls 4 X 800.
Baseball The baseball program finished with a record of 20 wins and 10 losses. They finished 1st in the MRVC West for the 2nd consecutive year with a record of 9-1. Seniors Tate Collum, Chrichton Hill, Garrett Morrow, and Jake Shaffer earned MRVC West All-Conference. The Eagles finished their season as semi-finalist in the MSHSAA district tournament.
Boys Tennis The boys tennis program continued its successful tradition by winning the MRVC regular season title by going undefeated in conference play. Furthermore, they swept the conference tennis tournament. The boys tennis team won the Marshall and Kirksville tournaments

Board of Education receives Missouri School Boards’ Association 2018 Governance Team Award
T
his recognition, achieved by only 20 of Missouri’s 518 public school districts this year, is based on the outstanding commitment to ongoing professional development, to regional and statewide leadership, and to active participation in legislative advocacy for public schools by the school board and superintendent.
School boards and superintendents that receive this award demonstrate the value of ongoing learning for continuous improvement. Recipients of the 2018 Governance Team Award will be formally identified and celebrated at MSBA’s Leadership Summit in Osage Beach in June. •
Dr. Jeremy Plowman named 2017-2018 KC High School Prinicipal of the Year

rain Valley High School principal Dr. Jeremy Plowman received a surprise presentation at his school on April 5 with the announcement that he had been named the 20172018 KC High School Principal of the Year by the Greater KC Missouri Principals Association. GVHS senior, Tate Kelly, interviewed Dr. Plowman after receiving his award and Dr. Plowman had this to say about the honor, “I feel really humbled, a little bit embarrassed, but also excited for our school. It is honestly not a principal award; it is a school award to recognize that we are doing good things here. I feel like attention shouldn’t be directed towards me, but it should be directed to all of the things that we’re doing here, and if I can represent that, I am very honored.”
Assistant Principal Bill Brooks insists Dr. Plowman consistently puts the students of GVHS first in his decision-making. “That’s one thing that he feels is very important. Just about every decision he makes, his default is what would be best for the kids in this situation, and that pays off.” Dr. Plowman has been with Grain Valley Schools since 2007 and has served as high school principal since 2013. Team Member Spotlight Craig Quinn - District Custodial Supervisor
M
r. Craig Quinn is the District Custodial Supervisor for Grain Valley Schools, spending most of his time at the high school. Quinn works with students in the high school to try to make the school run as smoothly as possible. “There is never a dull day at the high school.” Throughout Quinn’s years, he stays up to date on school activities, as well and staying active in the Grain Valley community.

NHS THON supports Children’s Mercy Hospital
N
ational Honors Society members hosted a fundraiser THON at the end of March to help raise money for Children’s Mercy Hospital. THON is a 12-hour long fundraiser hosted by the National Honors Society.
This year THON raised $5,500 that was donated to Children’s Mercy Hospital. The money raised came from t-shirts sales that staff and students were able to purchase, events students could pay to participate during THON, and the tickets to get in at the door. •

Students compete at State DECA Competition

his past February, twenty-six students competed against area high schools at the DECA District Career and Development Conference. Four Grain Valley High School students advanced to participate at the State Career and Development Conference held in March at Crown Center in Kansas City, MO.

Jackson Hoover also qualified to represent the state of Missouri as a National Leadership Delegate at the International Career and Development Conference held in Orlando, FL in April. While there, he participated in leadership activities and competition. He was one of only two students selected at the District Competition for this prestigious honor.

John Overstreet receives 2018 Distingiushed Service Award
L
ocal citizen, John Overstreet, was recently recognized at the MIAAA (Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association) Conference for his outstanding contributions and service to Grain Valley Schools. Mr. Overstreet received the 2018 Distinguished Service Award during the MIAAA Conference on April 8 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, MO. The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individuals in recognition of their contributions to interscholastic athletics.
Mr. Overstreet spends countless hours serving the students and staff of Grain Valley High School. He regularly works in the concession stand, spirit store, and hospitality rooms. Mr. Overstreet was the first booster club president of the unified booster club. He also spends his free time as the official photographer for the Grain Valley activities program. He has spent countless hours and has donated thousands of quality pictures to coaches, parents, and students. His photos can be seen throughout the high school building and are frequently used in the Eagle’s View magazine published by the school district. •

he Missouri Choral Directors Association has selected sophomore Ashlyn Frost and junior Bailey Cook, to participate in the All-State Show Choir. Students auditioned in March for the opportunity to be selected. Frost and Cook will rehearse and perform at the Missouri Choral
Directors Association Conference held July 17-19 in Jefferson City, MO. The All-State Show Choir will be led by Jeff Gemar who directs the award-winning show choir from Glenwood High School in Chatham, IL. •

Five students named Academic All-American with National Speech and Debate Association

his is the first year that Grain Valley High School has joined the National Speech and Debate Association (formerly the National Forensics League), and we are proud to announce that in our inaugural year in the NSDA we have had 5 students awarded the distinction of “Academic All-American”.

There are over 141,000 student members of the NSDA and annually fewer than 500 of those students meet the requirements to earn “Academic All-American” status. To earn this status a student must: complete at least 5 semesters of high school, earn at least the degree of Superior Distinction (having earned at least 750 NSDA merit points), and have a minimum of a 3.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale. •
Students advance to HOSA International Leadership Conference

he fab five are headed to Dallas! Jackson Hoover, Katherine Arnold, Shaley Harper, Aidan Boland, and Ben Totta are the first five in Grain Valley High School history to earn spots to attend the HOSA (Future Health Professionals) International Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas from June 26th to 30th. The Missouri HOSA State Leadership Conference was held at the University of Missouri S&T and Rolla Technical Center from March 26-27. The dynamic duo of Hoover and Arnold earned their spots being awarded first in Health Education. Champion in Sports Medicine, Shaley Harper, will be looking to repeat her success at internationals. Aidan Boland and Ben Totta both got third in their respected events with Boland competing in Medical Ethics and Law while Totta participated in Researched Persuasive Writing and Speaking. Oakley Barham accepted into the United States Air Force Academy O
akley Barham, the son of Heather and Derek Barham, was honored in the announcement of his acceptance to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. “Ever since he was little, he’s always wanted to fly. Anything that he could do to feel as if he were flying, he would,” explained his mother. Getting into the USAFA is quite an accomplishment for Barham because he has worked throughout his high school career, and even before that, to set himself up to be as successful as he could possibly be. Barham states,”I want the challenge and the opportunities that come with going to the academy. I know a lot of pilots that attended and they explained that it shaped their lives significantly, and if they had the chance to go back again, they would in a heartbeat.” Every year about 10,000 people apply to attend the academy and only 1,200 receive an appointment, and more often than not, applicants have to apply more than once to be accepted. The process to be considered for the academy is a long and rigorous timeline of writing essays, interviews, congressional nominations, and a full medical run down as well as a personal fitness test.
Prepping himself, Barham answered the call. It was the secretary to Senator Blunt. He asked if he had time to speak because Senator Blunt wanted to speak with him. Keeping his excitement contained, the call was transferred to Blunt’s office. Barham revealed that after the call was transferred Blunt explained that he wanted to be the first to congratulate him in being accepted into the Air Force Academy. “I was at a loss for words. Everything that I had done to get to this point paid off and it was hard to wrap my head around the fact that I did it. I accomplished my dreams of being accepted into the school that I’ve dreamed about since I was

The Cappies (Critics and Awards Program) is a program for recognizing, celebrating, and providing learning experiences for high school theater and journalism students. Four GVHS students had reviews selected for publication. Senior Aidan Callaghan was published in the Northland News for his review of Excelsior Springs High Schools’ Willy Wonka. Junior Breunna Franklin was published for her critiques on Belton High School’s production of Harvey. Her work appeared in The Democrat Missourian. Erin Gillihan, junior, was published for her review of Harrisonville High School’s Shrek in the Kansas City Star. Students place at Congressional Art Competition and Festival of Color
O
n April 14th, seven visual art students were honored by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II at the Kansas City Public Library. Their work was part of the annual Congressional Art Competition. Students showing their work included: Alisha Scott, Rylie Forbes, Austin Hudson, Evan Nadeau, Kevin Coney, Aaron Headley, and Mason Smith. Senior Mason Smith was awarded 2nd place for his painting “Tiny Dancer.” The Independence Citizen’s Civic and Culture Committee also hosted their annual “Festival of
Color” on April 14th and 15th. Senior Mason Smith was honored with “Best of Show” for his painting, “Depp of Imagination.” He also received a ribbon for 1st place in painting. Senior Kelly Smith was awarded 1st place in Experimental Photography for her self-portrait. Freshman Sophie Broockherd was awarded 3rd place in the sculpture category for her “Scandinavian Inspired Bowl.” •

Students experience Seat Belt Convincer
G
rain Valley Schools Resource Officer Danny Iiams brought the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Seat Belt Convincer to the High School and Middle Schools in April. The Seat Belt Convincer is a traffic simulator designed to convince drivers and passengers to buckle up. Student’s were buckled into a cart that was propelled down a ramp and then brought to an abrupt stop. The simulator allowed students to experience the impact of what an auto accident at 5 to 7 mph feels like. rain Valley Schools transportation department has awarded Matthews Elementary 5th grade student, Zachary Generaux as the 2017-2018 School Bus Safe Rider of the Year. Generaux was presented the award and a $100 prize for his excellence in Safety and Citizenship during a school assembly the last week of the school year. Each month, drivers nominate students for the best of the best to be considered the School Bus Safe Rider of the Year. Grain Valley Track and Field team has strong showing at State Competition
O
STATE COMPETITION
n May 25th the Grain Valley track team traveled to Jefferson City Missouri for the state track meet. Their hard work from this season paid off and the track meet was very successful as the team placed in seven events throughout the weekend. Senior Ethan Macoubrie placed eighth overall in men’s javelin as well as second overall in men’s high jump. The boys 4x100 relay team ran hard and worked together to place fifth overall. The boys 4x200 team placed fourth overall. Sophomore Marcus East ran hard in the 100-meter dash in a field that included six seniors and ended in eighth place overall. Junior Brendan Mahurin placed fourth overall in the boys 110-meter hurdles as well as beating his own personal best with a time of 15.0! The girls 4x800 meter relay team placed
sixth overall and had the second-fastest time in recent school history at 9:48. Additionally, the following athletes qualified and participated in events at the State Competition: Boys 4x400 relay team (Kevin Gutierrez, Jaxson Jarman, Andru Garrett and Kyle Boisen). Kyle Boisen and Kendall Schrader were alternates for sprint relays; Jaiden Yarber qualified for the 300 intermediate hurdles. Tyler Luke qualified in the 200 meter run; Andru Garrett qualified in the 400 meter run. The Girls 4x400 relay team qualified (Morgan Scott, Kailey Larson, Kylie Boehmer, and Gracie LaForge), alternates were Maddi Morris and Kayla Wade. Morgan Scott qualified in the Girls 800 meter run. Thank you to all of the hard work from everyone involved that helped our team achieve what they did. •

Allen Fails Allen Fails has served as a school bus driver for Grain Valley Schools for ten and a half years. Prior to his work with our school district, Allen worked more than 30 years as a Mechanical Engineer, including 20 years at Lake City and five years with General Motors.
Linda Gerteisen Linda Gerteisen is a 2nd grade teacher at Prairie Branch, a role she has served for six years. Previously, she taught 5th grade at Sni-ABar, Matthews, and middle school for fourteen years. Linda taught 6th grade at the middle school on Main St for three years.

Lori Harris is the Computer Science Teacher at South Middle School. She previously served as our district’s PowerSchool Administrator and Network Administrator for our technology department. Lori’s first role with our district was as business teacher at Grain Valley High School.
Leann Ortner has served as the school counselor at SniA-Bar Elementary for twenty years. Before that, she was the elementary counselor at Sherwood Cass for five years. Leann was our Featured Team Member in the school district’s Eagles View fall 2013 publication and was honored as a Woman of Distinction for the Eastern Jackson County Area in March 2017.

Don Snow has served as custodian at the Early Childhood Center and North Middle School for the past five years. Prior to his work with Grain Valley Schools, Don had a career as a machinist at Growth Industries Certified and at Mary Machine.
Kitty Snyder is the Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at South Middle School, a position she has held for sixteen years. She previously served as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Grain Valley High School for six years and was also the Cheer Coach, FHA Sponsor, and Sophomore Class Sponsor when at the high school.

D.A.R.E Essay Contest Winners

he 2018 Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) essay contest winners have been selected from each of the elementary schools. Each year, Grain Valley Resources Officers work with fifth grade students to teach them about the harmful effects of drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Students learn about peer pressure, violence, and bullying, and how to prevent it within their own lives.

bby Boren is a 2018 GVHS graduate. She is the daughter of David and Michelle Boren. Abby is a second-year member of the yearbook staff. She is also a member of Show Choir, FCA, and she is a THON executive for NHS. Outside of GVHS she is an active member of her youth group at Christ United Methodist Church in Independence, MO. This is her sixth time writing for the Eagle’s View. Abby will attend Northwest Missouri State University to major in in Psychology, so she can pursue a career in counseling and career services. ayla Meade is a 2018 GVHS graduate. She is the daughter of Lori Kirkland and Charles Meade. Kayla is a member of NHS, color guard, marching band, wind ensemble, and track. She is also a third-year staff member for The Talon and the GVHS Yearbook. This is her second time writing for the Eagle’s View. Kayla is planning to attend Northwest University on a music scholarship, where she plans to major in journalism with a minor in psychology.
ate Kelly is a 2018 GVHS graduate. She is the daughter of David and Sara Kelly. Tate is a member of tennis, show choir, FCA, the vice president of Student Government and an executive for NHS. She is also a first-year staff member for The Talon, GVTV and the GVHS Yearbook. This is her first time writing for the Eagle’s View. Tate is planning to attend Evangel University, where she plans to major in marketing.
iz Swafford, junior, is the daughter of Brett and Emily DeBerry. Liz is a second-year member of the yearbook staff. She is also a varsity cheerleader, member of HOSA, and the Theater Department. This is her second time writing for the Eagle’s View. After her 2019 graduation, Liz hopes to attend a four-year university to major in Psychology.
en Totta , junior, is the son of Frank and Trish Totta. Ben is a secondyear member of the GVHS yearbook staff. He is also involved in NHS, HOSA, theater, and speech and debate at the high school. This is his fourth time contributing to Eagle’s View. When Ben graduates in 2019, he would like to become a biomedical engineer.
achel Turpin, sophomore, is the daughter of Curtis and Angie Turpin Rachel is a first-year member of the yearbook staff. She is also planning to be a member of the swim team next year. This is her first time writing for the Eagle’s View. After her 2020 graduation, Rachel hopes to attend community college before going into the field of wildlife preservation.
