Kara Eaker Member of the United States’ Women’s Gymnastics National Team

The Grain Valley Marching Eagles had a very successful season under the new Director of Bands, Daniel Berard. The Marching Eagles received 1st Place Grand Champion at the Golden Regiment Invitational, a second place finish at the Broken Arrow Invitational and received the overall Outstanding General Effect award. The band also placed third at the 2018 UCM Festival of Champions competition. The Marching Eagles ended their season competing in the Bands of America St. Louis Super Regional Championship. Of the 74 bands competing, the Eagles were one of 14 bands to make it to the finals.

he School Board welcomed new teachers to the district during a reception held at North Middle School on September 20. Superintendent Dr. Marc Snow addressed the new teachers along with many staff and school board members.

The district has 11 new first-year teachers and 28 teachers who are new to our district bringing prior teaching experience. •

2018 Girls State

M

ariah Lister and Morgan Scott participated in The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of Missouri June 24 through June 30, 2018, on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Seniors Lister and Scott were selected based on their high moral character, good sportsmanship, and leadership.

Approximately 800 girls from various Missouri counties attended this year’s institute Above is senior Morgan Scott of government established to provide training in the functional aspects of citizenship. Mariah is the daughter of Doug and Shelly Lister. Morgan is the daughter of James and Julie Scott.

Two New School Resource Officers Join the District

G

rain Valley schools have three school resource officers that help provide safety, crime prevention and education throughout the district. The district has two new SROs this year.

Officer Steven Thompson joined the district this year and serves as the school resource officer for Sni-A-Bar Elementary, Sni Valley Academy, and Grain Valley High School. Officer Shawnda HayesDunnell has also joined the district this year and serves as the SRO for South Middle School and Stony Point Elementary.

Returning SRO Officer Daniel Iiams has served as a Grain Valley Schools Resource Officer for six years. Officer Iiams leads the D.A.R.E. program for the school district. He serves as the School Resource Officer for Prairie Branch Elementary, Matthews Elementary, North Middle School, and Early Childhood Center.

The SRO program is a nationally accepted program that places law enforcement officers in schools. Since the officers are in the schools each day, they are able to connect with students and be an approachable resource for students during school as well as at after-school activities. •

The American Legion Auxiliary, Oak Grove United 379 was their sponsor. Both girls were also sponsored

by FOCUS for Grain Valley, Grain Valley School District, and the Grain Valley Education Above is senior Mariah Lister Foundation.

Sponsors afford the opportunity for students to participate in this nationally recognized program and are critical to its continued success. The event was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Missouri.

Students who are juniors during the 2018-2019 academic year and are interested in attending should contact their high school counselor or visit the Missouri Girls State website at www.missourigirlsstate.org. The 2019 session will be held June 23-29. •

Special Olympics Missouri Summer State Games

A

thletes from Grain Valley participated in the Special Olympics Summer State Games held in Springfield, Missouri, on June 1-3. More than 1,000 athletes and coaches attended the Summer State Games held on the Missouri State University campus. National Honor Society Inducts New Members

O

n October 17, 27 new initiates were inducted into the Grain Valley chapter of the National Honor Society.

There were 21 new juniors and 6 new seniors. A brief candle lighting ceremony took place where new members had candles lit by the previous members, symbolizing the carrying on of the values NHS members hold dear. These ideas of leadership and service are passed down to the chapter’s newest members. Guest speaker, Jan Reding, took to the stage and spoke of her time in the National Honor Society as well as the benefits and impacts of service which NHS members took to heart going into the school year.

Students were then called up on stage to receive their certificate and officially be inducted into the chapter. With all

the newest members officially a part of National Honor Society they were then given their committees. The newest members were then issued one of five committees, Thon, World, Greater KC, Community or School. Finally, officially a part of the National Honor Society, members were excited to get started for the year.

This includes hearing about winter coat needs in our community, or bilingual books for a library being built in Peru, or diapers for hurricane victims in Texas. “It’s just inspiring to see what we can accomplish when a plan is put in motion and our members work together.”

When asked about the newest members, NHS leader Mrs. Michael said, “All new members this year had above the minimum community service requirement. So, we are really excited about their intrinsic connection to service.” This commitment to service shows throughout its members’ lives.

Madelynne Knust Honored by Daughters of the American Revolution

R

ecent Grain Valley High School graduate Madelynne Knust was chosen to receive the DAR “Good Citizen Award” given by the Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter at Fort Osage this past summer.

FALL SPORTS

HIGHLIGHTS Boys Swimming & Diving

This was the inaugural season for the Grain Valley swim program.

Grain Valley had 18 members in the program, and they practiced every morning at 5 am. The program finished 3rd in the Suburban Conference (Blue). In just its first season, the Eagles qualified 3 members to the state swim meet: Wyatt Huffman, Eli Hendricks, and Jackson Lane.

Softball

The softball program finished the season with a record of 17 wins and 11 losses. They finished the conference in 4th place with a 7-5 conference record. Seniors Bri Carter and Kate Arnold earned First team All-District and All-Conference honors. Freshmen Avery Huffman and BriLeigh Sims also earned First Team All-Conference Honors.

Girls Golf

The girls golf team had a successful season as new members of the Suburban Conference. Three athletes competed in sectionals and turned in the lowest team score of the year with a 411. Laney Rose, Shelby Kimbrough, and Taylor Hileman qualified for sectionals and earned All-Conference honors.

Girls Tennis

The girls tennis program won the first Suburban Conference team championship in Grain Valley history. They finished the conference season with an undefeated record. Their overall season record was 13-4. Ryan Deaton and Kendra Sibert qualified for the sectional tennis tournament.

Football

The Eagles finished the season with a 5-5 record. The football program finished 4th in the conference with a conference record of 3 wins and 3 losses.

Cheerleading

The Varsity Cheerleading team placed first at the MCCA Kansas City Regional Competition in the Class 4 Large division on November 3 at Staley Photo courtesy of John Overstreet High School. The defending state champion team will compete in the Missouri State Cheerleading Championships in December Cross Country at Lindenwood University. Six members of the cheer The boys and girls cross country teams each finished in 2nd place in the team earned NCA All-American status at Speed Camp this Suburban Conference (Blue). Both the boys and girls programs finished 4th summer, and for the 2nd year in a row, GV Cheer won the in districts and qualified as a team for the Sectional meet. Freshmen Ella Top Gun All-girl Stunt competition.

Volleyball

The volleyball program finished the season with an overall record of 16-13-2. Their conference record was 8-4, and they finished 3rd in the conference. Senior Gracelynn Laforge earned first team All-Conference and All-District honors. Seniors Karly Tharp and Morgan Scott earned 2nd team honors.

Boys Soccer

The boys soccer program finished the season with a record of 9-9-2. They finished in 4th place in the conference standings with a conference record of 6-6. The boys ended their season as district finalists.

GVHS Athletic Hall of Fame 2018 New Inductees

Grain Valley High School inducted Charles “Charlie” Richard into the Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame. Charlie’s widow, Nancy Richard, was in attendance to accept the award in his honor. Also in attendance were his daughter, Amy Hercules; his brother, Bob Richard and wife Judy; brother Dale Richard; his grandchildren, Charlee and Ryan; his nieces and nephews Karen Richard, Stacy Whitman, husband John, Duane Richard with wife Lisa, and his friends. His son, Pat Richard, was unable to attend the ceremony as he was coaching for Oak Grove High School the night of the induction.

2012 Grain Valley High School graduate Zac Hoover was inducted into the Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the Homecoming Football game on October 12. In attendance with Zac were his siblings Tanner, Maddie, Bryan, and Kaylynn, his father Don Hoover, and his grandparents Randy and Connie Hazen and Don and Marlene Hoover.

n Friday, October 12, 2018, Grain Valley High School added two new inductees to the Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame: Charles “Charlie” Richard and Zach Hoover. To be nominated into the Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame, there must be documentation of athletic achievements such as all-conference, all-district, all-state, school or state records, and other athletic achievements. Then, the nominations are viewed and voted on by committees and a candidate is chosen to be inducted into Grain Valley Athletic Hall of Fame.

Charles “Charlie” Richard 2018 Hall of Fame Inductee Charlie Richard graduated Grain Valley High School in 1959 as Valedictorian. He was also the varsity football quarterback and lettered in football, basketball, and track.

He graduated from William Jewell College in 1963 where he played quarterback for the football team that was conference champions with national rankings.

He went on to become the head football coach for Baker University from 1980-1994 where he had a 123-28-1 record. He was named conference Coach of the Year six times, won 11 conference titles, and had 10 NAIA playoff championship appearances. He coached 30 All-Americans including Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy. He was appointed Baker University Athletic Director in 1991, inducted into the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1995, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

Charlie Richard’s widow, Nancy Richard, was in attendance to accept the award in his honor.

Zach Hoover Zac graduated Grain Valley High School in 2012. He played wide receiver on the varsity football team where he had a career total of 108 receptions and 38 touchdowns. He was Missouri Class-4 All-State Selection and awarded AllConference, All-Area, All-Metro, and KMZU Dream Team distinctions.

Zac wrestled for Grain Valley placing 3rd in Class 2 All-State Tournament as a Junior with a record of 31 - 12 and placed 5th as a Senior with a record of 14 - 8.

He also ran track, placing 6th in Class 3 in the 110 high hurdles as a Junior and 13th in the 300 intermediate hurdles as a Senior.

Zac accomplished a very rare feat by being a 3-sport athlete that earned AllState honors in all three sports.

Following high school, Zac attended Missouri State University where he played wide receiver on their football team. He was named MSU’s Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year in 2012 and Special Teams Player of the Year in 2013. In 2014 he totaled 10 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown. He was named to MVFC and MSU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. In 2015 he totaled 15 receptions for 156 yards with a pair of touchdowns. His 10.4 yards per reception ranked 2nd on the team.

The next Hall of Fame Induction will take place before the Homecoming football game in 2019. • Eagle’s View 11

Congratulations to the 2018 Homecoming Court

G

rain Valley High School 2018 Homecoming Queen Gracelyn LaForge is the daughter of Scott and Sheri LaForge. Gracelyn participates in volleyball, track, basketball, FCA, National Honor Society, as well as student government. Her plan for after high school is to attend Johnson County Community College and play volleyball.

She is looking to earn her doctorate in behavior therapy.

Queen candidate Breunna Franklin is the daughter of Pamela Franklin. Breunna is involved in forensics, theatre, speech and debate, and is president of the drama club. She plans to go to New York to become a film actor.

Queen candidate Zephaniah Felden is the daughter of Cole Felden and Genesis Giffen. Zephaniah is involved in speech and debate and is a flute drill instructor for the Grain Valley Marching Eagles. She plans to utilize her A+ and attend Blue River Community College to major in primary education.

Queen candidate Valentina Romo is the daughter of Arturo Romo and Laura Torres. She is a part of the color guard section of the marching band. She plans to attend Park University and study business administration, as well as minor in marketing to later become a business lawyer.

Queen candidate Hannah Sears is the daughter of Heath and Kelly Sears. Hannah is involved in National Honor Society, tennis, theatre, and she is president of the debate team. Her plan for after high school is to attend a four year university and major in archeology.

Queen candidate Kendra Sibert is the daughter of Matthew and Chrystal Sibert. Kendra participates in National Honor Society, basketball, soccer, tennis, track, student government, as well as HOSA. Her plan after graduation is to attend the University of Missouri and study pre-med.

Grain Valley High School’s 2018 Homecoming King Ben Totta is the son of Frank and Trish Totta. Ben is involved in speech and debate, and National Honor Society. Ben is president of the GVHS HOSA chapter, as well as co-editor of the yearbook. His plan for after graduation is to attend an out of state college and earn his masters in biomedical engineering.

King candidate Mitchel Alexander is the son of Anthony and Debbie Alexander. Mitchel is involved in wrestling, football, National Honor Society, and is president of student government. His plan for after high school is to attend Pittsburg State University and major in construction management.

King candidate Charles Cross is the son of Sean and Vonda Doerr. Charles is a section leader for the Grain Valley Marching Eagles. He plans to attend the Performing Arts Institute of Chicago and major in trombone performance.

King candidate Kevin Gutierrez is the son of Paul and Kelly Gutierrez. Kevin is involved with GVTV and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and participates in basketball and track. He is undecided on which college he wants to attend, but plans to major in business.

King candidate Devin Linthicum is the son of Jason and Kressy Linthicum. Devin is in soccer. After graduation he plans to attend a four-year university and major in mechanical engineering.

King candidate Spencer White is the son of Richard and Diana White. Spencer is involved in theatre and speech and debate. He is undecided on which college he will attend but plans to major in theatre.

This year’s Homecoming prince and princess candidates were Will Lanear, Jarrett Dietz, Oliva Ash, Victoria Seever, and Ashlyn Frost.

The 2018 Homecoming Prince Jarrett Dietz is the son of Travis and Kerri Dietz. Jarrett enjoys writing music, going to concerts, drawing, and watching movies. Jarret participates in theatre, as well as drama club, Cappies, forensics, and show choir. After high school, he plans to become a musician and plans to pursue teaching in art or theatrics.

2018 Princess Olivia Ash is the daughter of Mike and Kristine Ash. Olivia enjoys singing, leading worship at her church, giving piano lessons, and is learning American Sign Language. She is in the jazz band and show choir.

After high school, she plans to attend a four-year college, and earn a degree in music education and American Sign Language interpretation. Olivia has plans to become either a music teacher for grade school students or an interpreter for the Deaf community. • Written by junior Addy Blackmore

Celebrating Grain Valley High School Alumni

rain Valley High School alumni enjoyed Homecoming on October 12 as the Eagles football team defeated the Ruskin Golden Eagles 51 - 14. Grain Valley graduates were encouraged to stop by the Alumni Tent for free food and drinks and to reconnect with their classmates.

Grain Valley Board of Education Earns Governance Award

T

he Grain Valley School District Board of Education received the Missouri School Boards’ Association’s 2018 Governance Team Award. This prestigious award is based on the board’s outstanding commitment to ongoing professional development in areas such as student achievement, school law, finance, board operations and

contemporary issues in education. The award also recognizes the school board’s commitment to regional and statewide leadership and to active participation in legislative advocacy for public schools and the students they serve. •

Teacher Chad Lograsso Selected for Boy Scouts of America Outstanding Educator Award

T

he Boy Scouts of America, Heart of America

Council awarded South Middle School teacher Chad Lograsso with the Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award on October 4, 2018.

The award was established in 2016 to recognize the valuable contributions that educators make in the lives of young people. The award is presented to individuals that go above and beyond the call of duty to instill what the Boys Scouts of America refer to as “Scouting Values,” but also recognize as great “Teaching Values.”

Chad Lograsso, South Middle School seventh grade science teacher, was selected to receive this award due to his diligence in the classroom and his commitment to the school and community. A press release from the Boy Scout of America stated that Mr. Lograsso “models ethical and moral choices every day in his role as a seventh-grade science teacher. He builds positive relationships with students in order to help them focus on skills they will need to be successful in life. He always puts the needs of students first when making decisions. Mr. Lograsso is also viewed as a leader by the faculty and staff at South Middle School. He is a leader on the Professional Learning Committee and a member of the Principal’s Advisory Committee. He is committed to excellence in the classroom and works toward that goal every day. His professional demeanor and commitment to excellence have earned him the respect of his peers.” •

Grain Valley Schools Receive The Examiner’s Best Of Eastern Jackson County 2018 Awards

S

chools and programs of Grain Valley Schools swept all four K-12 education categories in The Examiner’s Best of Eastern Jackson County Readers’ Choice Awards.

Forty-Eight schools were in the running for the Best Elementary School category. Prairie Branch Elementary prevailed as the winner of The Examiner’s Best Elementary School of Eastern Jackson County.

Grain Valley High School was selected as Best High School.

GVHS also won for the Best High School Sports Team.

Winners were based on voting by the readers of The Examiner. •

The Examiner named Grain Valley South Middle School as the Best Middle School of Eastern Jackson County.

District Receives Student Support Implementation Award

G

rain Valley Schools has been awarded the 2018 MTSS Implementation Award from the Missouri Council of Administrators of Special Education. The recognition affirms the processes the district has in place to implement multi-tier systems of support for all students.

Multi-Tier System of Supports, or MTSS, is widely accepted as an effective approach to improving educational outcomes for

all students. MTSS is driven by systematic data collection on student progress with proven interventions and monitoring as needed.

School district and special education officials from Grain Valley were on hand at an awards ceremony in September to receive the award. •

GVHS Hosts College Fair

O

n October 15, Grain Valley juniors and seniors had the opportunity to explore their college options at Grain Valley’s annual College Fair. With at least 30 schools in attendance, the seniors and juniors got to ask representatives from schools such as Avila, Iowa State, Mizzou, and many others any questions they had.

Angelina Navarro, senior, says “The only college I visited was Missouri State. I got accepted at the beginning of the year, so it was a great opportunity for me to ask questions about next year. I do remember my junior year being overwhelming as there were so many colleges to look into, but Missouri State always stuck with me.”

While some students were there asking questions for a school they

had already been accepted into, many students were also there to explore their options and figure out which school was the best fit for them.

Maddie Shields, junior, described her experience saying, “The college fair was really exciting because seeing all of the different colleges that I could possibly attend made me hopeful for the future.” Maddie visited many colleges such as Truman, Drake, Baker University, Rockhurst, and The St. Louis School of Pharmacy.

The college fair, held every year at GVHS, is a great experience for upperclassmen to explore the best colleges for them and to help figure out the best path to take to make the brightest possible future for each and every student. •

Crystal Woodin - Kindergarten Teacher

rystal Woodin teaches kindergarten at Prairie Branch Elementary School. This is her eighth year teaching kindergarten and her fifth year in the district. Mrs. Woodin was nominated for the Team Member Spotlight by parents of her current and former students.

I teach because I love to make learning fun and memorable for kids. And as teachers, we have the power to do both. If a child goes home and tells his or her family about something he or she did with you at school, then you won! You impacted them; they learned something new or interesting because of you. I strive for as many “winning” days as possible. I want to foster curiosity and questioning in children. I want to be the one who plants the seeds of life-long learning, and I am hoping to make scientists along the way!

GVHS Sophmore a Member of United States’ Women’s Gymnastics National Team

G

rain Valley High School sophomore Kara Eaker, has been selected as a member of the United States’ Women’s Gymnastics National Team. Kara is the daughter of Mark and Katherine Eaker.

She trains at Great American Gymnastic Express (G.A.G.E.) in Blue Springs, MO, under the direction of coaches Al Fong and Armine Barutayn.

Eaker has many accomplishments in gymnastics including her first World Championships, 2018 World team gold medalist, 2018 U.S. balance beam silver medalist, 2018 Senior Pan American Championships team and balance beam champion and floor bronze medalist, and 2017 U.S. junior balance beam champion and all-around bronze medalist.

Eaker, along with U.S. Women’s National Gymnastic teammates Simone Biles, Morgan Hurd, Riley McCusker, and Grace McCallum, competed in the 2018 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, in October. Team USA won the world title and secured a berth for the team into the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Eaker is working to secure a spot on the 2020 Olympics Team. •

eniors Mitchel Alexander and Ben Totta participated in The American Legion Boys State of Missouri June 16-23 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Students were selected based on their leadership, citizenship, academics, and character during their junior year at Grain Valley High School.

Boys State is a pure democracy in that all participants may vote and are eligible to hold office. The program is designed to educate and train Missouri’s young leaders in functional citizenship, leadership, and government. Nearly 1,000 student leaders build an entire state government in a single week.

Totta commented, “Boys State was an absolutely incredible experience. My eyes were opened to the inner workings of a state government and what it means to be a responsible citizen. I would recommend this camp to anyone who gets the opportunity to go. You will be changed for the better and meet 70 other men that you will call your brothers by the end of the week.”

Missouri Boys State participants campaigned and elected leaders of its counties and cities. Totta was a citizen of Clark City, member of the Federalist Party, elected to the House of Representatives, City Party Vice-Chairman, Ward Committeeman, Ward II, House Majority Leader, and Boys Nation Nominee. Totta is the son of Frank and Trish Totta.

Alexander was a citizen of Ingle City, a member of the Federalist Party, Health Commissioner, and a business owner. Alexander is the son of Anthony and Debbie Alexander.

“Boys State was something I will never forget. In eight days I had learned more about our political system than I have in my whole life. It wasn’t just hard work, it was a brotherhood.

There was laughs I will always remember, and relationships that will never die. It was truly a great experience that I wish more people had the opportunity to experience, ” recounted Alexander.

Alexander and Totta were sponsored by the Grain Valley Educational Foundation, Grain Valley Schools, and FOCUS for Grain Valley. Sponsors provide the opportunity for students to participate in this nationally recognized program and are critical to its continued success.

Eagle’s View Magazine Earns Missouri Award of Excellence

E

ach year the Missouri School Public Relations Association (MOSPRA) gives its members the opportunity to have their work evaluated by public relations professionals and measured against industry standards. In the 2018 MOSPRA Communications Awards Program, Grain Valley Schools was recognized with an Award of Excellence in the school district magazine category for Eagle’s View. In addition, the entry earned First Place in Missouri.

Each submission in the program was judged by two public relations professionals, both inside and outside of the public education arena. One of the category judges of the Grain Valley Schools entry wrote: “You cover a lot of ground in these 44 pages. So colorful - the photos really fuel this publication and are a people-watcher’s dream.”

MOSPRA President Paul Tandy said: “The MOSPRA Communications Awards Program not only recognizes exemplary school public relations programs but also provides valuable feedback from public relations professionals to help our members continue to improve their work. Congratulations to this year’s honorees on this well-deserved recognition.”

The Eagle’s View magazine is published three times annually and has a regional circulation of nearly 9,000 copies. •

First Year Swimming and Diving program Sends Three to State

STATE COMPETITION

he Grain Valley Boys Swimming and Diving team ended their inaugural year with three athletes qualifying to compete at the MSHSAA Boys State Championships.

Wyatt Huffman, junior, competed at the swimming state competition for Grain Valley the weekend of November 8-10. He competed in the Boys 100-yard Butterfly and the Boys 100-yard Breaststroke events.

To prepare for the meet, Huffman practiced 8 times a week, not only for the team here in Grain Valley but also for his competitive team, Kansas City Swim Association (KCSA). Huffman’s favorite strokes are the breast and butterfly, both which he competed at state. His best times for those this season were 1.03.36 for breast and 55.67 for butterfly, which helped him receive multiple first place wins. Wyatt hopes to attend the University of Hawaii and wants to participate in swimming there.

somersault with two and a half twists. Lane’s highest score was a 397 in his 11 dives.

Eli Hendricks, freshman, also competed for dive in the State Championships, placing fourth in the Boys 1-meter Diving event.

Hendricks practice morning and night, 8-9 times a week so he could feel comfortable going into the competition. Hendricks best 11 dives from this season had a score of 398. His favorite dive is a one flip with three twists. Eli felt excited for this competition and for seasons to come. •

Jackson Lane, sophomore, competed at the MSHSAA Boys State Diving Championships in the Boys 1-Meter Diving event. Jackson felt a little nervous about competing but got more confident each time he practiced, which was around seven times a week. Cross Country Athlete Ella Casey Competes at State Competition

F

reshman, Ella Casey, competed at the MSHSAA Cross Country State Competition and placed 51st out of 170 runners, the best Grain Valley has placed.

The state competition was held November 3 at Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City, MO. Casey practiced seven times a week in preparation for the competition and constantly pushed herself to beat her best time.

Casey’s season was a hit with multiple first places at meets and a new record for her 5K run, a 19:29 time. With Ella only being a freshman, she was asked about who she looked up to in her running career. “I really looked up to Mariah Lister during my seventh-grade year and wanted to push myself to be able to be that good,” Casey replied. • Written by senior Liz Swafford

etropolitan Energy Center and Kansas City Clean Cities recognized Grain Valley Schools on November 9, at the MEC 35th Anniversary Gala, with the Agent of Change Award for the district’s implementation of alternative fuels.

unior Mackensie Wagner represented Grain Valley High School at the 2018 Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Missouri Leadership Seminar that was held June 14-17 at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO. Wagner was selected through faculty recommendations, as well as a selection process that included in-person interviews, and an essay describing the most rewarding and challenging aspects of being a leader in school and the community.

The Agent of Change Award is presented to organizations that are transforming energy use in America’s Heartland. The district’s propane autogas deployment was recognized as a regional first for school districts.

The transportation department has integrated 14 new propane-fueled buses into the district’s fleet of 48 to replace diesel buses that were due for replacement. The district has also installed a propane fueling station at the transportation facility. •

Elijah Rush Earns AP + PLTW Student Achievement

he College Board’s Advanced Placement Program and Project Lead The Way have announced that senior Elijah Rush has earned the AP + PLTW Student Achievement in Biomedical Sciences and the AP + PLTW Student Achievement in Engineering.

Elijah was one of only seventy-three students in the country to receive AP + PLTW Student Achievement in two pathways for the 2017-2018 school year. Rush will receive a

certificate acknowledging this significate accomplishment, and any colleges or universities where he applies will be informed of this outstanding achievement.

To be considered for this honor students have to earn a qualifying score of 3 or higher on the AP Exam and a score of proficient or higher on the PLTW End-ofCourse Assessment. •

Addy is involved with the wrestling team, swim team, yearbook and track. This is her third time writing for the Eagle’s View. After graduation in 2020, Addy would like to go to college to major in journalism or literature.

Abby is a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, track & field, swimming & diving, and she is a first-year member of the yearbook staff. This is her first time contributing to the Eagle’s View.

After graduation in 2021, Abby plans to attend college where she hopes to participate in track & field and study journalism and photography.

She is also involved with show choir and the musical. This is her first time contributing to the Eagle’s View. After graduation, Bailey plans to attend college to study forensic psychology.

oel Florida , senior, is the son of John and Nancy Florida. He has been a student at Grain Valley Schools for 13 years. Joel is a firstyear member of the yearbook staff and a two-year member of the Eagle Media Productions staff. He is also a varsity tennis player. This is his first time contributing to the Eagle’s View. After graduation, Joel plans to attend college to study graphic design after he utilizes his A+ scholarship money.

assidy Grother, junior, is the daughter of Tim and Kelly Grother. She transferred to Grain Valley Schools during the 2017-2018 school year. Cassidy is involved with National Honor Society and is a firstyear member of the yearbook staff.

This is her first time contributing to the Eagle’s View. After graduation in 2020, Cassidy plans to attend college.

iz Swafford, senior, is the daughter of Brett and Emily DeBerry. She has attended Grain Valley Schools since kindergarten.

Liz is a co-editor of the 2019 yearbook staff. She is also a varsity cheerleader and member of the theater department. This is her third time writing for the Eagle’s View. After graduation, Liz plans to attend a four-year university to study creative writing and publishing.

he Eagles softball team finished their first season in the Suburban League Blue Division with a 7 - 5 record in the conference, and a 17 - 11 overall record.

Brianna Carter was selected first team All-Region, and Kate Arnold was selected second team All-Region. Kate Arnold and Brianna Carter were also selected to the All-District team. Keely Hill, Malia Gutierrez, Avery Huffman, and BriLeigh Sims were named District 13 Second Team. Payton Walter, Morgan Robinson, Alexis Parra, and Mikayla Chairez were named District 13 Honorable Mention.

GV Schools celebrate Veteran’s Day Stony Point Elementary hosted a Veteran’s Day Assembly on November 9th. Boy Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance, as Girl Scout translated it into American Sign Language. The school’s honor choir also performed during the celebration. The organization, Care Package From Home, was on hand to honor a local Veteran with a special presentation.
