Spring Breezes
Welcome to our April issue, where the winds of change signal the arrival of spring and the start of the summer season. Our cover photo, captured by the talented John F. Martin Photography, serves as a vibrant reminder that brighter days are ahead. As April unfolds, sailing enthusiasts across temperate regions eagerly anticipate the opening of the sailing season. With warmer weather and calmer waters on the horizon, it's time to dust off those sails and prepare for exhilarating adventures on the open sea.
But that's not all – this month, we're rolling out our special VIP pages, dedicated to none other than our beloved furry companions. In honor of National Pet Day on April 11, we invited members to showcase their very important pets in style. Whether they're fluffy felines, faithful canines, or any other cherished creature, we celebrate the joy and companionship they bring to our lives.
As the season blossoms with new beginnings and cherished connections, we hope this issue inspires you to embrace the spirit of adventure, whether on land or at sea. Here's to a month filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories with our VIPs – both two-legged and fourlegged alike.

Commodore's Corner
I would like to give a big thank you to Chef Eric and his staff for the creative plan they executed for à la carte dining during recent projects. It was incredibly successful and will be implemented on a limited basis in the future.
The St. Patrick's Day party in the Pub was not only well-attended but also a great deal of fun.
The magic April 1 launch date has come and gone, and if your boat isn't in the water yet, it's hopefully close to being ready. Summer is finally approaching, and the fun times are upon us to enjoy.
Even if you're not a boat owner, please consider taking a look at our Rendezvous schedule. The goal is to make the trip there only a part of your weekend, and whether you arrive by water or by car, there will be plenty of fun activities for you and your family to enjoy at the destination location.
This year, one of the primary goals of our Board of Directors and all the committees is to create an environment and organize activities that are enjoyable for all members. We believe this goal is as significant as any other. When you and your family enter through the front gates, we strive to provide an atmosphere where you can leave your worldly cares behind.
Our projects are nearly complete, and the Club is eagerly awaiting your arrival, along with your family and friends, to spend time together, enjoying relaxation and creating lasting memories. In addition, I would like to encourage you, as a member, to consider inviting your friends to join the Club. If they're interested, they can take a tour and speak with our Membership Director, Alexa Coole.
Regards,
William Dillon

Notes from the Manager
Exciting Dining Upgrades
At the Club, we're constantly striving to enhance our members' experience, and our dining venues are no exception. Thanks to valuable feedback from our annual membership survey, we've made some exciting updates.
A recurring theme was the noise level in the MDR and Spinnaker, despite the Spinnaker's recent renovation. To address this, we've replaced hard floors with carpeting and added sound-absorbing padding. We've also removed a half wall in the Spinnaker to improve views of the fireplace and added high top tables for bar seating.
In the Main Dining Room and Commodores Room, new carpeting and sound-absorbing deadening materials have been installed, while the Binnacle has undergone a significant transformation. Booths and risers will be replaced with new tables and chairs, including high-tops for better water views. We've also uncovered a hidden doorway between the Binnacle and Ballroom, enhancing connectivity during large events. Many members may not have been aware that there is a third doorway in the middle of the room because it was covered up by the previous booth seating. In addition to these physical updates, our management team is providing comprehensive service training for our staff to further enhance members' dining experiences.
We're thrilled to unveil these improvements and invite you to experience them firsthand. The Binnacle reopens on Wednesday, May 1. Some members may have already had the chance to experience the newly renovated Binnacle during the March 20 presentation by GPYC member Matt Cullen. During this event, the room was open to members as a pass-through from the Ballroom. I would like to take the time to extend my gratitude to Mr. Cullen for graciously hosting this event. It was truly heartwarming to see such a fantastic turnout from our membership, further showcasing the vibrant community spirit here at GPYC.
Don't forget to make reservations for Mother's Day on Sunday, May 12. This is one of the biggest days of the year at the Club and we look forward to honoring all the great moms out there. Please be sure to call or email now to get your preferred reservation time. The time slots are filling up fast!

Dock captains WanteD!
Summer is just around the corner, and as we gear up for another exciting boating season, we're on the lookout for volunteers to serve as Dock Captains for our upcoming Fleet Review party in August.
Dock Captains play a crucial role in fostering community spirit. Their responsibilities include organizing meet-andgreet sessions early in the season to welcome new dock neighbors, as well as coordinating their dock theme and decorations for the Fleet Review dock parties.
Exclusive Dock Captain gatherings are planned to collaborate with your fellow Dock Captains, share details on Fleet Review Weekend, and give you all the tools needed for a successful season.
We're aiming to have at least one captain from each dock and one social member captain to lead the organization of the Social Dock party.
If you are interested, please contact Ed Van Rossen at squad70@comcast.net.

JERRY GIRSCHNER
Pacific Duty to Club Improvement: Designing a Legacy
Jerry Girschner was four years old when his parents left post-war Berlin and immigrated to Michigan. His father was a patternmaker by trade and almost immediately established a going business in his garage. Jerry was just 17 and had been helping in his father’s shop when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after the attack, and following basic training was eventually assigned to the Army’s seagoing Amphibian Engineers. As the skipper of a pilot boat, Jerry was sent to the Western Pacific and participated in the Battle of the Philippines, transporting high-ranking officers from their ships to the beaches.
Jerry served on pilot boats throughout the war, working his way up to the rank of Technical Sergeant. Following the Japanese defeat, his pilot boat was among the first Allied craft to enter heavily guarded Tokyo Bay on the day of the official surrender. Shortly thereafter, General Douglas MacArthur asked him to stay on in the Army and become his personal boat captain, a very prestigious offer indeed. But Jerry, being anxious to get home to his fiancée, declined the offer and went home to Michigan, where he married, started his family and rejoined his father in the business of patternmaking.
Carmichael called on Jerry to create a small replica of that trophy for the winner to retain. Commodore George Beard did something similar in 1975, asking Jerry to create a small replica of the Coppa d’Europa sailing trophy to be retained by the race winner that year. The miniature Coppa took about 40 hours to complete and was presented to Llwyd Ecclestone, a Bayview Yacht Club member and owner of the winning boat, Ricochet.
There was no end to Jerry’s creativity. At one point he designed and built the wooden sign that welcomes members to the Spinnaker Dining Room. He also fashioned the mantel that still adorns the fireplace in that room. Past Commodore Fred Schriever, something of an expert in metalworking himself, had high praise for Jerry’s abilities during the 1979 reconstruction and raising of the former flagpole from the Dodge estate that stands in front of the clubhouse today. Of particular note was Jerry designing a pattern for the larger anchor and cannon positioned next to the flagpole, followed by a pattern for smaller replicas which are still being used for Fleet Review. That episode is quite the story unto itself. See “Looking Aft” on page 26 for what happened.
Arrow Pattern Manufacturing Works grew rapidly in the post-war automotive industry in Detroit, and in due time Jerry’s business success allowed him to join the GPYC, where he kept a succession of fine boats. Some senior GPYC members may recall Jerry as a person who was always volunteering his talents to help with various projects around the Club. In 1972, when a GPYC sailor won the Richardson trophy, Commodore Curtis
Jerry served on the GPYC Board of Directors from 1971 to 1978. Over the years he kept several different boats in the harbor, including one of his favorites, a 57’ Chris Craft Constellation. When his interest was captured by the rise of offshore racing in that era, he purchased two offshore speedboats, one for himself and one for daughter Kristyl, who had also caught the racing bug.
Jerry Girschner passed away in 1997, but he is fondly remembered for the many contributions he made to the club he loved and proudly called his own.

Preparing Your Body for Summer: Tips for a Healthy and Happy Season
As the days get longer and warmer, it’s natural to start thinking about shedding those layers and enjoying the sunshine. Whether you're planning beach trips, pool parties, or outdoor adventures, getting your body ready for summer can enhance both your physical and mental well-being. Here are some tips to help you feel confident and energized as you embrace the summer season:
1. Nourish Your Body: Start by focusing on nourishing your body with wholesome foods. Incorporate plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet. Hydration is also key, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated and your skin glowing.
2. Move Your Body: Aim to incorporate regular physical activity into your routine to boost your fitness and energy levels. Whether it’s swimming, biking, hiking, or simply taking a walk in the park, find activities that you enjoy and make them a regular part of your schedule. Not only will exercise help you feel stronger and more confident, but it will also improve your overall health and well-being.
3. Focus on Skincare: With more time spent outdoors in the sun, it’s important to take care of your skin. Make sure to apply sunscreen with a high SPF before heading outside to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Additionally, consider using moisturizers and skincare products that nourish and hydrate your skin, keeping it healthy and radiant all summer long.
4. Practice Mindful Eating: Summer often brings with it tempting treats like ice cream, barbecue, and sugary drinks. While it’s okay to indulge occasionally, practice mindful eating by paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Opt for healthier alternatives whenever possible and savor your favorite treats in moderation.
5. Get Plenty of Rest: Don’t underestimate the importance of rest and relaxation for both your physical and mental well-being. Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to recharge and repair. Incorporate stress-reducing activities such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to help you unwind and stay centered amidst the summer hustle and bustle.
6. Set Realistic Goals: Remember that getting your body ready for summer is not about achieving a certain body shape or size, but rather about feeling strong, healthy, and confident in your own skin. Set realistic goals for yourself and focus on making sustainable lifestyle changes that will support your overall health and well-being in the long term.
By following these tips, you can prepare your body for summer in a way that enhances both your physical health and your enjoyment of the season. Embrace the opportunity to nourish your body, stay active, and soak up the sunshine, and you’ll be ready to make the most of every moment this summer. If you would like to start a new workout routine to get yourself ready for boating and pool season, please contact me at pwendzinski@gpyc.org!
Best in health,
Peter Wendzinski Athletic Director

Wine of the Month
By Emily Gross
Spring is here! It is time to delve into the world of crisp, fresh white wines, where there are gems that shine brighter than the rest. Delaille Unique Sauvignon Blanc is undoubtedly one of them. Hailing from the esteemed Loire Valley in France, this April wine of the month captivates with its elegance, complexity, and unmistakable charm.
Delaille Unique Sauvignon Blanc comes from the renowned Domaine du Salvard, a family-owned estate with a rich winemaking heritage dating back to 1898. Situated in the heart of the Loire Valley, the estate benefits from a unique terroir characterized by limestone soils and a favorable microclimate, ideal for cultivating exceptional Sauvignon Blanc grapes. At Domaine du Salvard, winemaking is a labor of love, guided by a commitment to traditional methods and sustainable practices. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected to ensure only the finest fruit makes it into the wine. Gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation preserve the delicate aromas and flavors, resulting in a wine of exceptional purity and character.
This wine delights the senses with its pale straw color and lively aromas of citrus, green apple, and hints of freshly cut grass. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of crisp acidity and vibrant fruit flavors, with notes of grapefruit, lime zest, and a subtle minerality. The finish is long and refreshing, leaving a lingering impression of sophistication and finesse. Its zesty acidity makes it an excellent match for seafood such as our fresh oysters, shrimp cocktail or the Fresh Catch.
Delaille Unique Sauvignon Blanc embodies the essence of the Loire Valley, offering a taste of terroir and tradition in every sip. The Wine Committee is excited to share this complex and versatile wine with you! Tastings will be offered in the MDR on April 4 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The wine will sell for $11/glass and $44/bottle. Cheers to a wine that truly stands out from the crowd.

Culinary Excellence
By Chef Eric Voigt
Sweating to Enhance Flavor
When we hear the word "sweating," our minds often drift to the gym with Peter or standing under the scorching sun on a pool deck during summer. However, there's another dimension to this word, especially when it comes to cooking. In the realm of culinary arts, sweating plays a vital role in imparting depth and richness to the flavors in our dishes.
Consider a hearty soup like chicken noodle or New England clam chowder. The essence of these soups lies in the meticulous process of slowly coaxing out flavors over hours of cooking, reducing them to their purest form. Most recipes begin with a combination of onions, carrots, and celery, known as mirepoix. By dicing and gently "sweating" these vegetables in fats such as oil, butter, or even bacon fat, we unlock a reservoir of rich, complex flavors that infuse the entire dish. This process, conducted over low heat, allows the flavors to intensify without imparting color to the vegetables.
Another example is the preparation of marinara sauce or the fiery arrabbiata sauce. Here, the magic of sweating lies in sautéing onions, garlic, and red pepper flakes together until they meld into a flavorful base before introducing the tomatoes. The resulting sauce boasts a symphony of flavors that elevate everything from pasta to shrimp.
Expanding beyond sauces, sweating vegetables like peppers, carrots, onions, or parsnips opens a world of culinary possibilities. Whether simmered down into a velvety puree or gently cooked into a savory sauce, the process remains the same – low heat, frequent stirring, and a patient coaxing of flavors until they reach a concentrated, refined state.
In essence, sweating forms the cornerstone of flavor-building techniques in cooking. It's the initial step that sets the stage for layering additional ingredients and ultimately crafting a culinary masterpiece. From soups to sauces and beyond, mastering the art of sweating unlocks a universe of culinary delights, ensuring each dish reaches its full potential.

Sailing into Spring!
Spring is upon us, and I couldn’t be more excited to kickoff the sailing season. Our new fleet is prepped and ready, and believe it or not, the local high school teams have already hit the water! This Spring is going to be one for the books at GPYC! With the onset of milder temperatures, anticipation is mounting for a flurry of upcoming regattas. Our new feet of 420Es has opened the door of opportunity to host several prestigious events. For the first time, we will be hosting a collegiate level MCSA district regatta, bringing in talented college sailors and high level officials from all over the Midwest. And that’s just the beginning of the Spring kickoff. Following that, we will be hosting the MISSA Michigan Baker & Mallory Pre-Qualifiers, and culminating with our biggest regatta at the end of April - the MISSA Mallory National qualifier.
April 5, 6, 7: MCSA Open Team Race Championships & MCSA Open Fleet Race Championships
April 12, 13, 14: MISSA Michigan Baker (Team Race) Pre-Qualifier & Mallory (Fleet Race) Qualifier
April 27-28: MISSA Mallory National Qualifier
At the heart of the sailing community in Grosse Pointe, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club boasts a rich tradition of seamanship, camaraderie, and competitive spirit. I am excited to share this spirit with the competitors at our upcoming regattas. It takes a ton of work and resources, and I am forever thankful for the continuous support of the Board of Nautical Education Foundation. Come on out and watch some sailing at the MAC this month! Looking Aft
Our “booming tradition” began 50 years ago
By Past Commodore James L. Ramsey
The act of ships saluting each other with harmless cannon fire is nearly as old as sea lore itself. It began centuries ago when unfamiliar vessels confronted one another at sea and signaled their peaceful intentions by firing their guns with no shot in them. The practice became ceremonial when ships passing in review honored their commander with blank fusillades.
The custom found favor among yacht clubs the world over, with the exception of the Great Lakes. It seems an ancient treaty following the War of 1812 with Britain forbade vessels with loaded cannon in these waters. As a ceremonial alternative, early GPYC skippers equipped their craft with less menacing ordnance such as cardboard, crepe paper and balloons.
All that changed in 1973, when protocol-minded member Jud Moran correctly “dressed ship” with international flags and “mounted cannon” during Fleet Review. Taking note, future Commodore Bill Plante asked Moran to spearhead an effort to get more GPYC boats to mount cannon and dress ship for his Review in 1976.
But there was one problem. Reasonably priced blank-firing cannon, selling for under $300, were non-existent in those days. The solution, concluded Moran, was to “make our own.” He petitioned member Jerry Girschner (see his Member to Remember story, page 8) to design a suitable pattern and persuaded future Commodore Fred Schriever, himself an expert in the casting business, to produce the 10-gauge noisemakers. The gunmaking trio glibly dubbed themselves the “Ceremonial Naval Ordnance Committee.”
Girschner and Schriever went to work and their efforts were a success. The first run of cannon sold for just $100 each. Demand at the Club was such that a second run was needed, then a third. Commodore Plante’s Fleet Review was a resounding event, complete with dressed ships and booming brass cannonry.
All 75 of the cannon were individually numbered and personally test-fired by Moran and Schriever. Unfortunately the test session attracted the attention – make that ire – of the Grosse Pointe Shores police. But once pious amends were made and peace was restored, Cannon #001 was presented to Com. Plante for his role in restoring a tradition of the sea. Plante eventually gifted his cannon to the Club; it is one of our prized historical possessions.
Sadly, Messrs. Moran, Girschner and Schriever have passed on. But a reminder of their legacy can be heard every Fleet Review weekend when friendly salvoes boom over the waters of Lake St. Clair.
