With St. Patrick's Day on the horizon, anticipation is steadily growing for our annual party. This much-awaited event promises a fantastic time for all attendees, and we're gearing up for a celebration that will be remembered for its lively spirit and camaraderie. Join us in looking forward to the exciting moments that lie ahead as we transition from the enchantment of winter to the anticipation of vibrant spring and summer festivities. Meanwhile, the Board of Directors has dedicated substantial time to both significant and subtle improvements, many of which may go unnoticed but contribute to enhancing our Club. Among the notable changes this year are modifications to the Main Dining Room, the Spinnaker, the Binnacle, and the Tower Pub. These updates aim to address noise levels, functionality, and aesthetics. Exciting changes are underway at the Club! From new Gazebo bar stools to additional pool umbrellas and upgraded dining room tables and chairs, our spaces are undergoing a remarkable transformation. But that's not all – we have a significant engineering project in the pipeline. The Ballroom windows are set to be replaced, with preparations beginning and the installation scheduled for spring 2025. Get ready for an enhanced and modernized Club experience as we continue to invest in creating an inviting and contemporary atmosphere for our members. It's never too early to consider enrolling your children in our exceptional summer programs, which continue to grow each year. If this aligns with your plans, don't hesitate to reach out to the Club for more information. Our swimming and sailing programs provide excellent opportunities for all GPYC participants. The sailing program not only teaches sailing skills but also fosters self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Our dedicated coaching staff ensures that participants gain valuable skills and safety awareness around water activities. Finally, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who participate in various committees, and a warm encouragement for everyone to get involved – after all, this is YOUR Club.

Regards,

William Dillon Commodore

Committee Highlight

As winter settles in, bringing low water levels and freezing conditions to the Harbor, it's crucial to prioritize safety around the Club. Here are some reminders: 1. Stay Clear of Finger Piers and Docks: Please refrain from walking on the finger piers and docks for your safety. 2. Be Mindful of Ice Eaters: Take note of the Ice Eaters in operation and be aware that safety ladders may be raised or out of the water. 3. Buddy System: Travel in pairs and communicate your whereabouts to others. Always inform someone if you're venturing outside. 4. Weather-Appropriate Attire: Dress appropriately for the weather. Keep your hands free and out of your pockets as you move around. 5. Exercise Caution on East Bridge: Exercise caution when crossing the East Bridge, especially if you're heading out for Trap Shooting. Ice formation on walking surfaces is likely.

To Your

Health

Thinking Outside the Box

In today's sedentary lifestyle, finding creative ways to keep ourselves active is crucial. Incorporating physical activity into our daily routines is essential. To make this happen, I am always thinking outside of the box for ways to stay active. Here are some unconventional ways to keep your body moving and add excitement to your day. Dance Like Nobody's Watching. Dancing offers a fun and engaging way to stay active. Whether you take dance classes or simply let loose when your favorite song comes on, dancing not only gets your heart rate up but also improves coordination, balance, and flexibility. Active Commuting. Ditch the car when you can. Embrace active commuting alternatives like biking or walking, if feasible. This helps you incorporate exercise into your routine and reduces your carbon footprint. If driving is necessary, consider parking a few blocks away and enjoy a brisk walk. Outdoor Chores. Sweat equity and a spotless home? Turn chores like shoveling snow, gardening, lawn mowing, washing your car, or cleaning your house into opportunities to stay active. You'll burn calories while completing necessary tasks and enjoy a clean home. Active Hobbies. Pursue what you love while staying fit. Incorporate active hobbies into your routine, such as hiking, swimming, rock climbing, skateboarding, or playing a sport. These activities not only keep you fit but also bring joy and fulfillment. Active Breaks. Seize your breaks to engage in quick bursts of activity like jumping jacks, push-ups, or mini-yoga sessions. A few minutes of intentional movement can increase blood flow, release tension, and provide an energy boost. Thinking outside the box adds variety and excitement to your routine. Experiment with these ideas and discover the joy of staying active while doing what you love. Movement is medicine, and every small step counts towards a healthier, more vibrant you.

Bowling Leagues are in Full Swing!

We successfully hosted our annual GPYC vs. Country Club of Detroit interclub event in January, and I'm thrilled to announce that the GPYC bowlers reclaimed the trophy! The ladies set the tone with an impressive 128-pin victory, led by Renee Seago's outstanding handicap score of 681. Contributions from Connie Buffa (638), Lynn Turner (597), and Laura Schroder (611) further solidified their success. The men faced a close match, securing victory by a mere 15 pins. Anthony Ventimiglia led the charge with a remarkable score of 748, supported by Michael Cytacki's 730 in the doubles. Their team also clinched the team score, with additional strong performances from Chris Izzi (600), Sean Fannon (646), and Michael Page (654). Congratulations to our outstanding GPYC bowlers! We currently have openings in our Wednesday night and Thursday night leagues. If you're interested in joining, please email me at gwoods@gpyc.org for more information. It's a fantastic way to enjoy the Club during the winter months – as I am writing this article during a snowstorm. On another note, I've been having conversations with Dr. Larry Stephenson about the history of the bowling center. Delving into the archives, he provided pictures from the 70s and 80s for a running video on our scoring monitors. The history reveals: 1940: Bowling center opens with 4 lanes. 1942: The Club added 2 more lanes, totaling 6 lanes. 1990: GPYC upgrades to AMF pinsetters, replacing the old ones. 1995: Bowling enters the digital age with automatic scoring. When you're in the bowling center next, check out the historical video on the scoring monitors. Feel free to stop by and say hi! Sincerely, Gordy Woods Director of Bowling

Wine of the

Month

We all love a toasty Cabernet Sauvignon in the winter! This month, we revel in the rich history of Napa as a globally renowned wine-growing region, featuring a Cabernet primarily crafted from Oakville grapes – our distinguished wine of the month, the 1881 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville, CA.

Heather Aldrich Food & Beverage Director

The name "1881 Napa" pays homage to the year the Oakville Grocery, California's oldest continuously operating grocery store, was established. Adjacent to this historic establishment stands a reimagined Victorian house, now serving as a modern tasting salon and museum. Nestled in the charming town of Oakville, it is devoted to producing appellation-designate Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings under its eponymous label, utilizing fruit sourced from esteemed vineyards across Napa Valley. The aim is to not only offer an exquisite tasting experience but also to enlighten visitors about the unique characteristics of each growing area within Napa Valley. Exploring this space, guests discover wine artifacts and relics dating back to the 19th Century.

The 1881 Napa, a 2020 vintage predominantly sourced from Oakville grapes, promises to envelop you in warmth during the chilly months. Its rich flavors of blackberry pie, dark chocolate, espresso, and a subtle hint of vanilla, create a sensory journey. A harmonious blend of 96% Cabernet and 4% Petit Verdot results in finely grained tannins – robust yet soft and silky, complemented by well-balanced acidity. Starting February 1, tastings of the 1881 Napa will be available at the Club throughout the month, inviting you to savor this exceptional vintage. Priced at $21 per glass and $81 per bottle, it's an invitation to experience the captivating essence of Napa's viticultural legacy in every sip.

Excellence

Perfect Date Night Dinner

As February unfolds, bringing with it ambiance of romance and warmth, what better way to celebrate love than through the art of culinary excellence? Embark on a gastronomic journey that not only tantalizes the taste buds but also sets the stage for an intimate date night. Here's a recipe tailored for two, promising a delightful experience that transcends the ordinary. Cheers to a month filled with culinary delights and romantic moments!

Recipe for a Perfect Date Night: Roasted Garlic Parmesan Chicken with Lemon Asparagus Ingredients: • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 1 head of garlic • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1 bunch of fresh asparagus

• 1 lemon, sliced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions: 1. Prepare the Roasted Garlic: • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). • Cut off the top of the garlic head to expose the cloves. • Place the garlic on a sheet of aluminum foil, drizzle with olive oil, and wrap it securely. • Roast in the oven for 30-40 minutes or until the cloves are soft and golden. Allow it to cool, then squeeze out the roasted garlic. 2. Prep the Chicken: • Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper. • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. • Sear the chicken for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. 3. Assemble the Dish: • Place the seared chicken breasts in a baking dish. • Spread the roasted garlic over the chicken and generously sprinkle Parmesan cheese. • Arrange lemon slices on top. • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and the cheese is melted and bubbly. 4. Prepare Lemon Asparagus: • Trim the tough ends of the asparagus. • Toss asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper. • Arrange around the chicken during the last 10-15 minutes of baking, ensuring it's cooked to a tender yet crisp texture. 5. Garnish and Serve: • Remove the dish from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley, and let it rest for a few minutes. • Serve the Roasted Garlic Parmesan Chicken with Lemon Asparagus on a beautifully set table for an enchanting date night experience. And let's not forget the timeless combination of chocolates and roses! Red roses, believed to be the favorite flower of Venus, symbolize passion and desire. Beyond the petals, the allure of Valentine's Day extends to the sweet embrace of chocolates. Did you know that each year Valentine's Day chocolate and candy sales collectively soar to an estimated $4 billion in revenue? In the past, chocolates weren't just a delight for the senses but were also prescribed by doctors to 'heal a broken heart.' So, as you share roses and chocolates with your loved ones, you're not just exchanging gifts but immersing yourselves in a rich tapestry of traditions and sweet history.

In my free time, I like to walk my dog, Daisy. I also enjoy going to concerts, trivia nights, and sporting events.
