SAILING INTO FALL

This month’s cover photo, taken by John F. Martin Photography, is from the Fleet Review Sailing Regatta hosted here at the Club. Specifically, the sailboat pictured belongs to GPYC members Greg and Teresa DeGrazia, Hibernia. The start and finish for the race is usually just off the Marine Activity Center. This is the second year the Club has done a sailing regatta during Fleet Review weekend, and we hope to keep this tradition going for many years to come. It only seemed fitting to choose a sailboat for the cover of this month’s Grosse Pointer to represent the huge success team GPYC had at a few of their regattas. The photo also reminds me of the cooler fall nights – my favorite!

Commodore's Corner

It has been such a pleasure to serve as your Commodore this past year. We closed out the summer with two of our popular annual Club events. Fleet Review came first and was a huge success. We kicked off the weekend with boat decorating, Family Fun Night, and the dock parties. One of my most memorable parts of the weekend was dressing up as KISS and surprising everyone riding in on my motorcycle to the East Lawn. The next day was the Fleet Review Boat Parade, and it was so nice to see all the participants. It might have been hard to recognize me without all the KISS makeup. Later that evening, the Club hosted a great dinner party in the Ballroom and on the East Lawn. Thank you to everyone who made the weekend happen.

We just had the Labor Day festivities a few weeks ago. The fishing rodeo and pool games had great attendance from all the kids this year. The BBQ was well attended, and our culinary staff outdid themselves again with the buffet that was available. This is a true sign that summer has officially come to an end.

Although the boating season is almost over, we have many upcoming events to keep everyone engaged at the Club. The Membership and Catering Departments have been working hard to come up with events that appeal to everyone. Make sure to check out the Buzz for the Fall Foodie Pop-Ups that are a popular favorite, as well as details on the upcoming Wine Dinner and Halloween weekend festivities. Mark your calendars for the Annual Meeting – it will be here before we know it!

I hope to see everyone in the fall and winter months enjoying themselves at all of the fun events we have coming up.

All the best!

From the Boardroom

We hope you are enjoying our feature, "From the Boardroom." This monthly feature will help members stay informed about important actions, policy developments, and special projects that were addressed at the most recent Board of Directors meeting. As Commodore Fish has stated to Club members, his goals for the year include increasing transparency and making sure members understand the many social activities that are taking place at the Club. We also would like members to know what is happening with Club finances. We hope “From the Boardroom” will spark member interest, lead to suggestions for improvements at the Club, and provide information that members find useful.

1. Membership Report

a. Membership report was reviewed noting 2 new members, 7 resignations and 9 transfers.

b. Rear Commodore Weiland discussed the need for a targeted plan to increase membership for the next Fiscal Year.

2. Treasurer’s Report – Treasurer David Schaden

a. The financial packet and minutes were reviewed and discussed.

b. For the ten months ended July 31, 2023, the Club Operations continue to be better than budget by approximately $58,000.

c. Cell Tower proceeds were received and placed in MMA.

d. The Finance Committee is asking the Club Management to request that the Shores Club contribute to the 4th of July fireworks as done in the past.

e. The Finance Committee put together a proposal for the Cell Tower proceeds that includes the “emergency fund” and the “Endowment fund”; one for short term emergencies and one for longer term investment strategy.

f. The Finance Committee is still working on a longer-term plan, as well as a replacement for the Club’s retiring investment advisor.

3. Facilities –

a. Reviewed the minutes from the June 8, 2023, Facilities meeting.

b. Director Saldana discussed the new application used for quoting window work. The App allows for a comparison of vendor quotes.

c. Several Board members along with Facilities Chair Rich Shetler, Assistant General Manager Sean Brown and Facilities Manager Marcus Weldon toured the building to look at areas of the Club that need urgent attention as well as those that represent aspirational projects.

Notes from the Manager

Fantastic Fall

At the GPYC, we are constantly emphasizing the fact that we are a 12 month Club. No matter the season, no matter the age segment, we have something for everyone! Now that the summer has ended and the pool has closed, we shift our focus to our fall activities. By the way, did you notice the new pool cover? The Club now features a pool cover for both the large pool and the small kids pool. These covers will allow the Club to be more efficient with opening the pool and will save on costs by protecting the water from nature's elements. Now back to the fall activities. When you come in for lunch or dinner, you will notice some new table toppers that feature the schedule for the Fall Foodie Pop-Ups as well as various other events like wine tastings and pasta nights. Our first feature night on September 14 was successful with the return of Pasta Night and an “Empty the Wine Cellar” night featuring a unique opportunity to pick up some wine at an incredible value. Remember, at these events our private Wine Vault Owners get first dibs on the wine. If you haven’t checked out that program, please do so and enjoy the many benefits to Vault Ownership. Thank you to all the members that came out to support the first two Fall Foodie Pop-Ups with the Oktoberfest Night on September 21 and the Greek Fest on September 28. These events celebrate themes and utilize the beautifully renovated Spinnaker Room. The next themes include: Wild Game Night on 10/5, Polish Night on 10/12, Day of the Dead Celebration on 11/2, and another big Pasta Night on 11/16. At only $35 per person these events are all great values for members and a lot of fun! Even though it is getting cooler outside, I want to remind members that we still have the Pickleball nets up and courts are available to play. We plan to have those up for as long as the weather permits. We will also be sending out final scheduling and event information for our Trap Shooting at the Marine Activity Center, which kicks off the week of Thanksgiving. On a Facilities note, I would like to announce a project that will be commencing within the next week on the North side of the property. The Club is adding an 8 inch thick cement pad to the garbage area and relocating the garbage compactor further North along the property line fence. There will be a brand new fence line installed in front of the garbage area which will completely hide it from sight. The only disruption that will occur is in the parking area adjacent the garbage area. Our Valet Lot will be out of commission for up to one week and the Club will cone off a portion of the first lane in the main parking lot to make up for that. While this project will only cause minor disruption, we always want you to be fully aware of what is happening on the property. We appreciate your support and look forward to a very action-packed Fall/Winter. For more information on all the activities, please visit our website, the Weekly Buzz email, or reference the Seasonal Event Brochure that was sent out to you.

Smooth Sailing,

Aaron Wagner

2023 Member Survey Recap: We Hear You (once again)!

This is the second of a three part series providing feedback and highlights of the 2023 Member Survey.

There is an old saying in the finance community: “if you can’t be right, at least be consistent “. The GPYC 2023 member survey illustrates that our members are both right AND consistent! Specifically, there was overwhelming support for keeping Spinnaker use as a dining venue, once again addressing noise levels in the MDR and the Spinnaker, and delivering better value for the investments made by our members - comprising the top three issues of member concern in rank order. (See the accompanying chart for further details.)

Both management and the Board recognize the importance of addressing these issues while acknowledging that “fixing” the noise issues will be an incremental process. Here are some of the initiatives already underway or planned relative to these items:

Spinnaker utilization - expanded theme nights, wine tastings, trivia contests, as well as added new/special events

Noise Levels

- consideration of capital project options for inclusion in the 2023 - 2024 budget

- incremental steps to help along the way (installation of higher quality/more carpeting, reducing maximum capacity, sound absorbing wall hangings, etc.)

Value - several initiatives in this category have been/will be implemented, including:

- continuous operation in 2022-2023 (no shutdown)

- expanded concierge services

- Harborside Grill theme nights/pop ups

- revised, more competitive fuel pricing

- intense focus on food: quality, consistency, service, and price

- healthy dining menu items

All in all, these various action steps and initiatives are intended to improve our member’s experience when they choose to utilize the wonderful facility that is YOUR Grosse Pointe Yacht Club!

Next month’s final article will speak to several areas of importance to members, including locker rooms, all things pool related, and valet services among other items.

Harbor Happenings

Behind the Scenes

This year more than ever, Harbor Master Alex Turner and the Harbor Staff have gone above and beyond to make your Harbor experience as clean as possible. The photos below are an inside look into what the staff has been removing from the boat wells and surrounding areas of the Harbor. The Club wants to take the time to shoutout this team. We appreciate all the time, efforts, and sore muscles this department goes through each day!

Sailing News

Erin DeGrazia, the daughter of GPYC members Greg and Teresa DeGrazia, sailed for the first time in the Bayview Mackinac Race this year with her dad. When asked what the most exciting part of the whole thing was for her, Erin said, “the most exciting part of the Mackinac race was the finish. I got to steer the boat over the finish line.” This was Greg and Erin’s 13th race together. Erin started sailing when she was 8 years old. They received a winning flag for second place in 2015. The father daughter duo plan to race next year for the 100th Anniversary of the Bayview Mackinac Race. Pictured on the front cover is their boat, Hibernia, from the Fleet Review Sailing Regatta hosted here in August where they took first place!

Sailing began as a way to explore the world. While today's sailors still retain the bold spirit of explorers from past centuries, most modern sailors sail because they love being on the water. Sailing is ranked one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. The 2023 Sailing Season has come to an end, and our sailing team has done an outstanding job this year at the many regattas held over the summer. Here is a recap of regattas the GPYC Sailing Team took part in, winning many awards and having many personal accomplishments for the individual sailors.

To Your Health

Weight Loss Challenge Winner ... Jim Hanika

This past spring, we had a member weight loss challenge. Twenty five people participated in the rigorous three-month process. I was very impressed with everyone, and many people made great strides in improving their overall health and well-being. Members adopted new habits when it came to both eating and dieting, and continue to instill these habits months later.

The overall winner of the challenge was Mr. Jim Hanika! Jim was very disciplined during his weight loss quest, and I would regularly see him working hard bright and early in the Fitness Center.

“The program was a great way to focus on my health and lose weight. Peter did an amazing job putting together a program that fit my needs. I started to work out more at the Club, took daily walks, reduced going out to eat at restaurants and focused my diet on eating healthy,” said Hanika, who lost nearly 40 pounds and 12% of his body weight during the three months of the challenge. Well done, Jim, I couldn’t be prouder!

With the success of the weight loss challenge, we will make this an annual event in the spring. I have found it easier to stick to a new routine once the clocks move forward; the daylight is a little longer, and the weather gets warmer. No one wants to be outside January 1 in Michigan unless you are hitting the ski slopes!

Thanks again to all who participated in the First Annual Member Weight Loss Challenge, and special congratulations again to Jim! Hard work pays off!

Best in health,

Running Spirits: Detroit's Prohibition Rum Runners Adventure's

In the annals of history, few eras can rival the Prohibition period for its intrigue, rebellion, and sheer audacity. As we set sail on the waters of memory, we embark on a journey back to the roaring twenties, where Detroit and Canada played pivotal roles in the thrilling world of Prohibition-era rum-running.

The Prohibition of alcohol in the United States, which lasted from 1920 to 1933, was intended to eliminate the "evils" associated with drinking. However, it paradoxically gave rise to a new breed of criminal enterprises, most notably the bootleggers and rum-runners. They quickly found a lucrative opportunity in quenching the nation's thirst for forbidden spirits. The demand for alcohol was so high that these smugglers could charge exorbitant prices for their contraband, leading to immense wealth for those willing to take the risk Detroit proved its mettle as a hub for a different kind of engine: the illegal alcohol trade. Situated strategically on the border with Canada, Detroit was ideally positioned to become a hotspot for this clandestine industry. Its proximity to Canada's whisky distilleries and breweries made it an ideal smuggling route. Illicit spirits flowed across the Detroit River, giving rise to a thriving black-market economy. Detroit's streets buzzed with speakeasies and hidden bars, where flappers and gangsters alike reveled

in the forbidden pleasures of the era.

The Detroit River, separating the United States and Canada, became a watery highway for rum-runners. Smugglers used all sorts of vessels, from small, nimble speedboats to larger, inconspicuous ships, to ferry contraband across the border. Under the cover of night, they navigated treacherous waters and kept one step ahead of law enforcement. Some of the most famous rum-runners, such as Bill McCoy, earned their reputation for always delivering "good, clean liquor," avoiding the dangerous practices of watering down or adulterating their products.

On the other side of the border, Canada played a dual role in the Prohibition drama. It was not only a source of spirits but also a key supplier of ingredients like malt and yeast for American bootleggers. Canadian whisky, often referred to as "rye" due to its high rye content, became the drink of choice for many Americans during this time. This cross-border collaboration of illegal trade turned ordinary citizens into overnight criminals, all in the pursuit of the forbidden pleasures of alcohol.

The rum-runners of Detroit and Canada were a colorful lot. They included notorious figures like the Purple Gang, a Jewish mob that controlled much of Detroit's illegal liquor trade, and the infamous "Rumrunner King," Harry "Peg Leg" Strothers. These

figures became legends in their own right, celebrated for their daring exploits and cat-and-mouse chases with law enforcement. Peg Leg Strothers, for example, became famous for his uncanny ability to outrun the Coast Guard, making him a legend in the annals of rum-running history.

Though Prohibition ended in 1933, the legacy of rum-running still echoes through the streets and waters of Detroit and Canada. The stories of smugglers, their boats, and their secret tunnels continue to fascinate. Today, you can even visit museums and historical sites dedicated to this era, like Detroit's Prohibition Exhibition, which brings this thrilling chapter of history back to life.

As we sail on the waters that once bore witness to these dramatic events, let us raise a glass (of legal spirits, of course) to the brave rum-runners who defied the odds during Prohibition. Their audacious spirit, combined with the allure of forbidden pleasures, created a fascinating chapter in the history of Detroit, Canada, and the enduring saga of rum-running on the high seas. Their legacy serves as a reminder of the enduring human spirit to seek out the extraordinary, even in the face of prohibition.

Swim Team Highlights

"Swim like a Champion Today" was the theme for our small but mighty team this year! Under the coaching staff led by Head Coach Jimmy Singelyn, Assistant Head Coach Bill Thompson, and Assistant Coaches Elizabeth Bourke, Hannah Wheatley, Genevieve Boutrous, and Jacob Tomlinson, team GPYC had 60 swimmers. The GPYC Sailfish finished 5th out of 14 teams at the Michigan Inter-Club Swimming Association (MICSA) finals held at the Western Golf and Country Club July 28th through July 30th and won the Corsan Challenge by raising over $8500 for the YMCA Detroit Swims Program, over twice as much as the next team.

The swimmers had a lot of fun throughout the season, from flag decorating, to poster making, pizza parties, and our tradition of TPing homes by the older swimmers prior to Finals. In July, we celebrated our seniors Stevie Wheatley, Will Turner, Vincent Sceglio and Vincent Maffesoli. We would like to give a huge thank you to all the volunteers, supporters and the Swim Chairs, Brigid and John Zvirbulis for all their work during the 2023 season.

Back in the Saddle was the 2023 MICSA Finals Theme, with the GPYC Finals theme of Swim for the Roses. The GPYC Sailfish took this to heart, with top 12 finishes to make it back to the finals. The top 12 swimmers from the preliminary events made it to the finals and received medals. Top 12 finishes, earning points for the team, were accomplished by many of the GPYC swimmers.

The GPYC Sailfish had some top 6 relay finishes. The Mixed 8 & U 100-meter Freestyle Relay consisting of the team of Madison O’Neill, Johnny Peabody, Lidia Ermanni and Cecilia Paluzzi placed 6th. The Mixed 8 & Under Medley Relay (each swimmer swims a different stroke) finished 2nd with a team of Daniel Early, Rita Paluzzi, Evie Melhem and Christian Fossee. The Girls 200-meter Freestyle Relay also finished 6th with a team of Mia Melhem, Katie DeGrazia, Emma Topolinski and Allie Roth. The Girls 200 meter Medley Relay of Eleaner Early, Campbell Shore, Betsy Ropke and Katie DeGrazia finished 3rd. Christian Fosse finished 1st in the 25 meter and 2nd in the 50 meter freestyle for the 8 & under boys. Emma Topolinski finished 5th in the Girls 9-10 year old 50 meter freestyle and John Sceglio finished 3rd for the boys. In the Girls 9-10 100 meter freestyle, the GPYC had 3 top 12 finishers; Elle Johnston in 7th, Betsy Van Natter in 9th and Eva Zhuk in 10th. Looking Aft THE NON-MEMBER WHO SAVED OUR CLUB

It was 1935 and the sixth year of the Great Depression when George Slocum became commodore of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, just when what remained of the Club’s assets were being turned over to the Collateral Liquidation Corporation. Later, in a written reflection of the event, Commodore Slocum stated, “Every plan and method for bringing the Club out from its financial difficulties was tried. There was simply no hope, and during my second year as commodore [1937] we finally received approval of all parties to put Club properties under the friendly terms of 77B [Bankruptcy Reorganization, Section 77B] to establish the equities of those who had claims against the property and to bail out the water which everyone knew was foundering a good ship.” But then, just one year later, as the country was slowly but steadily rising from the depths of the Depression, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club was blessed with an unwitting savior.

H. Lynn Pierson, a businessman living in Grosse Pointe Farms, had never been a member of the GPYC. He just happened to be in the Federal Building in downtown Detroit one day in spring of 1938 when he was approached by a judge who had some remarkable news. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club clubhouse was for sale, and the mortgage along with all debts against the Club could be settled for the price of $125,000. Pierson immediately started making calls, and by the very next day he was at the Detroit Boat Club presiding over a meeting of potential investors. The cash required by the Collateral Liquidation Corporation to proceed with the purchase of the Club’s assets was $25,000, and to raise that amount the group devised a plan to sell lifetime memberships at $1,000 each. Pierson then contacted Commodore Slocum to inform him of the meeting and the plan for coming up with the necessary funds. Together they brought more investors into the group and were ultimately successful in raising the $25,000.

Regarding his personal fundraising efforts, Pierson later recalled approaching K.T. Keller, president of Chrysler, who not only purchased a membership for himself but had six other memberships sold before Pierson left his office.

A symbolic meeting was triumphantly held at the newly saved GPYC clubhouse on May 24, 1938, and the next day at the Detroit Club, Lynn Pierson presided over the reorganization of the Club where new officers were elected. They were:

George Slocum……. Commodore

K.T. Keller……….......First Vice Commodore

Frank Couzens……..Second Vice Commodore

Herbert Woodall…... Third Vice Commodore

H. Lynn Pierson…… Rear Commodore and Treasurer

Ward Peck…………. Secretary

Within the group of earliest investors who stepped forward to purchase lifetime memberships, two were previous members of the Club and would go on to serve as commodores: James Marks and Herbert Woodall. New member investors who ultimately would serve as commodores were Lynn Pierson, Frank Couzens and Ward Peck.

Fast thinking, excellent organizational skills and good connections certainly all came together at the right time and in the right place for H. Lynn Pierson to be able to pull off this coup. Had they not, one can only speculate on what might have been the fate of our beautiful clubhouse, and perhaps even our club as well.
