Culinary Excellence

This month's cover photo, taken by John F. Martin Photography, is from the Fall Family Festival event held at the end of September. The Fall Family Festival helps close out summer and get us in the mindset for the fall and winter months. It is also a great event to engage all of the family members in your lives and spend time with them. Also, who doesn't love donuts? November is a month I look forward to every year. The leaves begin to change, fall activities are always fun to participate in, and of course, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is also the time of year I reflect on everything I am grateful for. The upcoming holidays are a time to be grateful for what we have and to spend time with family while we can. I hope everyone has a great month of November, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Commodore's

As I begin my year as Commodore, I want you to know how special I think it is to lead such a great Club. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is ranked amongst the best clubs in America for good reason. Over the last few years, the Club has continued to grow and change to meet the demands for today. I would like to commend Commodore Fish for a very successful year and thank him for handing off the Club in excellent health. Looking ahead, I want to thank everyone who has provided their help and guidance to plan our upcoming year. The goal for 2024 is simple; it’s for everyone from our youngest member to our most senior member to have fun and make great memories. We want the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club to be the first place you want to go, no matter the season. I would like to ask the membership to get involved and plan on attending as many events and activities as you are able. Ultimately, what makes the Club fun is our members! Below is a short list of exciting events in the near future: 1. Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa – Sunday, November 26, 2023 2. Commodores Ball – Saturday, December 2, 2023 3. Winter Blast – Saturday, January 20, 2024 Finally, I would like to remind everyone that the end of the year is coming and that making a tax-advantaged contribution to the GPYC Foundation helps maintain our beautiful historic Clubhouse. I’m looking forward to an exciting and fun year with everyone! Regards,

From the

Boardroom

We hope you are enjoying our feature, "From the Boardroom." This monthly feature will help members stay informed about important actions, policy developments, and special projects that were addressed at the most recent Board of Directors meeting. As Commodore Fish has stated to Club members, his goals for the year include increasing transparency and making sure members understand the many social activities that are taking place at the Club. We also would like members to know what is happening with Club finances. We hope “From the Boardroom” will spark member interest, lead to suggestions for improvements at the Club, and provide information that members find useful.

Intangible Quality – Let’s Keep Building Together!

This year, the Club was honored with the renewal of our Distinguished Clubs Designation through the Boardroom Magazine, one of the most prestigious awards a Club can earn. In addition to earning this distinction, the Club was honored with the Iconic Label, which only about a dozen other clubs achieved in 2023. The formula for these accolades is as follows; Product Quality, Facility Quality, Governance Quality, Service Quality, and Intangible Quality. The Club made great strides in each of these categories this year. Our product quality is something the Club will never sacrifice. Whether it is food, beverage, or athletic programming, the product we deliver will always be the highest quality possible. Our Chef continues to work hard on our seasonal dining menus and unique offerings. If you haven’t experienced the recent Fall Foodie Pop Ups, make plans to do so! Chef has featured some interesting themes like Wild Game, Polish Night, Cuban Night, and Tapas Night. Make a reservation today for the Day of the Dead Celebration on November 2 and the Pasta Night on November 16. The Club continued its upward trend in facility quality by completing a renovation of the pools including adding giant pool covers that will protect one of our largest assets and create savings during opening and closing, as well as all new umbrellas for shade. The Clubhouse saw several large roof replacements, as well as receiving new ovens and laundry equipment to name a few highlights. Over the past five years, the Club has invested over ten million dollars into the Facility, Harbor, and Grounds and we are not stopping there! Stay tuned for the list of approved improvements for the coming year. The Board of Directors continued to add to the governance quality at GPYC by reimagining the Strategic Plan which you can find on the website. Service quality continues to be very strong as our member expectations continue to rise. The Club has committed to a very aggressive operations schedule while achieving a breakeven budget through member usage and fiscal responsibility by our department managers. All of these qualities contribute to the total package, but none are more important than intangible quality. Intangible quality is created through a strong membership with a sense of community. The GPYC, without a doubt, is as great as it is in large part due to the members and the positive and friendly culture. As we move into the Fall Season, we want to continue to build upon this amazing culture by adding new members. In the Club industry they always say, “your best source for new members is through your existing members!” In order to provide you with the tools to help us recruit new members, we have created a Fall Program. The Share the Experience Program runs through the end of December and offers new members the chance to join the Club and not pay dues the first three months plus a $1,000 credit for food and beverage and activity. This is an AMAZING opportunity for new members to come in and experience the GPYC. For more information on this program, please contact Membership Director Alexa Coole at acoole@gpyc.org. Happy Fall,

Aaron Wagner General Manager

Wine of the By Heather Aldrich

Month

The Wine Committee has decided to start a new and exciting way to introduce wine to membership. Each month, the Committee will get together and do a blind tasting of wine offerings from each of our distributors. Members will get a chance for their own tasting on the first Thursday of each month from 5-7 p.m. when dining at the Club. The wine will be offered as a feature and paired with special entrees throughout the month. The November Wine Feature of the Month will be McPrice Myers High on the Hog. This is a red blend with varietals of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Graciano from Paso Robles, Central Coast, California. It has tasting notes of macerated cherries, strawberry reduction, sweet spice, spring flowers, plum tart, melted licorice, and fresh herbs. The medium-bodied palate is brighter and fresher than expected, with a long, spicy finish. High on the Hog beat out 9 other wines almost unanimously! Upon unmasking, some were hesitant due to the strange name it carried. Dr. Larry Stephenson told us all this story "The phrase ‘high parts of a hog’ comes from the idea that the best cuts of meat on a pig are from the back and upper leg, which are literally higher than the belly and feet. The phrase is related to the expression ‘high on the hog’, which means living in luxury or affluence, as only the wealthy could afford to eat the high parts of the hog." The expression and tasting notes of High on the Hog led us to believe that this wine might also be pricey, but the best part is that it is quite affordable, $10/glass and $40/bottle. Come visit the MDR this November and enjoy High on the Hog with Chef Eric’s Beef Short Ribs. It won’t let you down.

High School Sailing Championships

On Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1, the GPYC hosted the East Great Lakes Qualifier and Michigan 420 State Championship. Teams from Metro Detroit, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, and others from around the State participated in the Regatta. The weather was great with blue skies, but the wind was extremely light making it a challenge to complete all the needed qualifying races. This Regatta featured the first use of the 20 new 420e sailboats donated by the Youth Nautical Education Foundation (YNEF) to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The winner becomes the Michigan State Sailing champion for 2023 and the top two finishers qualify to participate in the Great Lakes Championships in Chicago. The Regatta winner was UofD/Mercy as the State Champ, with Grosse Pointe South a close second and qualifying for the Nationals. Foundation

By Commodore William Dillon

Foundation Integral to the health of our Club GPYC

When was the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Foundation established?

Foundation Board then grants funds to the Club upon completion of the project. The Foundation Board also maintains a reserve for unexpected emergency repairs that are likely with an older building. Club members have generously supported the Foundation. To date, their contributions have exceeded $4 million. When contributing to the Foundation, members have had the option to direct a contribution to a specific preservation project, or to designate it for best use as determined by the Foundation. We wish to thank the members who have generously contributed to funding these Foundation projects which have been completed to date: Ladies’ Locker Room Remodel Men’s Locker Room Remodel Bowling Recreation Center Update Spinnaker Redesign Rotunda Revamp Moat Bridge Main Dining Room Reconfiguration

The GPYC Clubhouse was honored with a place on the National Register of Historic Places after celebrating the Club’s Centennial Year in 2014. The designation is commemorated by a plaque at the east entrance of the Clubhouse. Once the Club was listed on the National Register, the Club established the GPYC Foundation and was granted 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Commodore James N. Martin served as the first Director of the Foundation, a separate entity from the GPYC. Directors or Officers of the Club cannot be on the Foundation Board. James T. Mestdagh, Dave Breen, Mike Murray and Commodore Gary Marowske serve as the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Also, essential repairs would have been delayed without the Foundation support.

Why you might wish to contribute to the Foundation.

What is the purpose of the Foundation?

Preserving the historic Clubhouse is an ongoing and expensive effort. The Club maintains other parts of the operation, such as the Harbor, pool area and Family Recreation Center. In contrast, the Foundation is devoted to only one purpose, preserving the structure and its supporting structure. Contributions to the Foundation support will help preserve the historic Clubhouse into its second century. If you contribute for a specific project, the funds will not be used for any other project. Contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible from U.S. income, estate and gift taxes. If you are interested in learning more about the GPYC Foundation and options for making a contribution, please contact the Club’s CFO Jim Demasse.

Funds from the Foundation can be used for repairs, replacement and preservation of the physical structure of the Clubhouse and its island that supports it, as described in our application for historic designation. Furnishings are not a qualifying part of the historic structure. To date, the Foundation has helped maintain and restore large portions of the Clubhouse. Preservation projects are never-ending given the age of the building.

How does the Foundation operate? The GPYC Board of Directors and management team identify preservation projects that need to be completed and submit a funding request to the Foundation. The Foundation Board reviews the request and determines if it meets the Foundation’s stated purpose and if funds are available. If a project is approved for funding, the

Culinary

Excellence

By Jennifer Benoit

Thanksgiving is an annual national holiday in the United States and Canada celebrating the harvest and blessings of the past year. It is a day to spend with family, or maybe even watching football. Traditionally, it is also a day to carve turkey or ham along with many delicious side dishes. Here are some fun recipes that our GPYC staff enjoys having on their table for Thanksgiving dinner.

Bourbon Pecan Pie Recipe

PREPARATION Step 1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix together eggs, sugar, corn syrups, butter, bourbon, vanilla and salt until well blended.

This is a classic and simple recipe given a Southern kick with a little bourbon. The alcohol will evaporate when you bake the pie, and you’re left with a richly flavored, gooey dessert, intensely sweet with a baseline of vanilla. You do need both light and dark corn syrup for this — using only one or the other will change the pie’s flavor. TIME 1 hour INGREDIENTS Yield: 8 servings 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup granulated sugar ½ cup light corn syrup ½ cup dark corn syrup 1⁄3 cup unsalted butter, melted 2 tablespoons bourbon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon salt 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell 1¼ cups coarsely chopped pecans

Step 2 Prick the sides and bottom of the pie shell with a fork at ½-inch intervals. Spread the pecans on the bottom and pour the mixture over them. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until just set around the edges but still slightly loose in the center. (It will continue to set as it cools.) Step 3 Place on a rack to cool slightly.

Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9 x 13 pan. Place sweet potatoes in a pot of boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes or until fork tender. Drain. In a large bowl (or in the pot the potatoes were cooked in), mash the sweet potatoes with brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, vanilla and salt & pepper. Fold in half of the pecans and spread into prepared pan. Sprinkle with the marshmallows and the remaining pecans. Bake for 25 minutes or until marshmallows are golden brown and potatoes are heated through.

Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Servings: 16 servings INGREDIENTS The ingredients in this recipe are simple but delicious. There really is no need for lots of extra additions like eggs or flour, we let the flavor of the potatoes shine through. 3 pounds sweet potatoes peeled and cut into cubes ½ cup brown sugar packed 1⁄3 cup butter softened ½ teaspoon vanilla extract ¾ cup pecans chopped, divided ¼ teaspoon cinnamon or to taste salt and pepper to taste 2 cups miniature marshmallows Brown Sugar – Light or dark brown sugar works in this recipe. Dark brown sugar has more flavor. You can also add a dash of maple syrup if you’d like. Butter – You can use salted butter in this recipe. Or, use unsalted butter and add extra salt if you’d like. Pecans – We love pecans paired with sweet potatoes. Feel free to swap them for walnuts. Flavoring – A little hint of vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon is added for flavor. You can add extra cinnamon or more warm spices (like pumpkin pie spice) if you’d like. You can also add a splash of bourbon or other flavors.

18

Notes Make Ahead: This sweet potato casserole recipe can be made up to 48 hours ahead of time. Prepare and refrigerate it before baking without the toppings. Remove it from the fridge at least 30 minutes before baking and bake for about 20 minutes and then stir. Add the topping and cook an additional 15-20 minutes or until heated through and the marshmallows are toasty.

WATERFORD HILLS

Track Day

Wednesday, September 20, 2023

This year marked the third anniversary of these fun and adrenaline-filled events for GPYC members. Waterford Hills Raceway is the oldest road track in Michigan, and some may say, one of the most exciting, due to its curvy lines and elevation changes. The track doesn’t allow the driver any downtime. It is a very technical track in that you are constantly adjusting and preparing for the turns. Both beginners and experienced drivers can learn a lot every time they take a lap! The event featured a full day schedule starting with breakfast and initial pre-checks of vehicles followed by an instructional classroom session led by Event Chair Saylor Frase who is an experienced race driver, certified instructor, and winner of multiple track records. Saylor brought with him an instructional crew that included locally famous race drivers Tony Mack and Cade Wilson. Members were well prepared to take the track between the classroom session and a very interesting track walk outlining the things to watch for and the racing line to follow. As with most events like these, you can’t do them without great volunteers and sponsors. Our sponsors for this year’s event were The Motor Guild and Cauley Ferrari. The Motor Guild is an exclusive club within the M1 Concourse that brings together a unique group of auto enthusiasts, high performance drivers, designers, and adventurers.

To learn more about this club, please visit www.MotorGuild.org. Our other sponsor is Cauley Ferrari of Detroit. Owners Jeff and his son Joe Cauley brought some unique Ferrari’s for the group to experience on track and shared their story becoming one of the premier dealers of the Italian Icon in the US. Check out their website and store at www.CauleyFerrari.com. After a fantastic lunch, the drivers were ready for the track. “We have a nice mix of skill levels and automobiles here today, said General Manager Aaron Wagner. There are Corvettes, BMW’s, Audi’s, Porsches, and even Mazda Miata’s!” Many may not know that Wagner is a certified race driver as well and he enjoys combining his passion for racing with his work at the GPYC to offer these unique experiences to the membership. All the cars were fast, but the car that turned the most heads was the Praga R1, owned by Saylor Frase. “It looks like something out of the future, said one of the spectators, as it zoomed by.” Frase set the Waterford Hills Track Record for ASR Class with a 1:06.897 lap in 2019. Everyone enjoyed the experience, and the weather was perfect. At the end of the day Motor Guild Manager Francesca VanGrinsven presented each driver with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne and a toast was made. Members were already talking about wanting multiple events next season, so keep an eye out for the 2024 dates. Special thanks to Gracie Button for her volunteer photography work at this event.

On Sunday, September 24, we invited any member with a dog to join us in closing out the pool with a splash! This event is one of GPYC's favorites - who doesn't love a bunch of dogs all in one place! Summer 2024 will be here before we know it!

GREAT LAKES ART Sunday, October 8, 2023

On Sunday, October 8, members had the opportunity to see famed artist Robert McGreevy give a presentation on his marine artwork. McGreevy is also an accomplished historian and paints his ships with a close eye to detail as well as to beauty. This event was well attended, and very well liked! When asked if she enjoyed the event, Julie Granger said, “We thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. Mr. McGreevy was a wealth of information! We loved his stories about each ship and how they met their demise. His pictures were amazing too! We’ve already shared a few of his stories with friends!” Douglas Dossin was also asked what his feedback on the event was and he said, “I thought the event was great. It didn't last too long, we learned about Bob's artwork and learned about the development of Great Lakes Shipping. Bring him back!” There will be another event similar to this coming up – details are in the upcoming events pages!

Looking

Aft

The day GPYC launched a missile By Past Com. James L. Ramsey

But the Dual-Ghia’s real charm was its lineage. It was the direct descendent of the Dodge Firebomb, also the Dodge Firearrow, that was commissioned by Chrysler styling head Virgil Exner as part of a collaborative effort between the third largest U.S. automotive company and the Italian design firm. Exner’s plan was to remedy Chrysler’s stodgy styling image by showing that Chrysler products could have sex appeal in addition to being everyday family transporters. And for a time, he succeeded. The dramatic-looking Dodge Firearrow and the ill-named Firebomb concepts were a hit at auto shows around the country, even though Chrysler Corp. had no intention of turning them into production automobiles. They were also the forerunners of Mr. Exner’s daring tailfin styling strategy – the “Forward Look”– that briefly catapulted Chrysler products into the forefront of automotive design. The story would have ended there, were it not for Eugene Casaroll. Mr. Casaroll struck a deal with Chrysler and Ghia, enabling him to purchase new chasses and drivetrains from Dodge Division and ship them to Turin, Italy, where Ghia coachwork was installed. From there the cars were shipped back to the U.S. for final finishing and delivery to well-heeled customers. It was a roundabout process, which certainly contributed to the Dual-Ghia’s hefty price tag; but it also made the car exclusive and quite desirable. In the end, just 117 Dual-Ghias were produced before Casaroll pulled the plug on a losing venture. But during their run from 1956 to 1958, they became the vehicle of choice for notables such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Desi Arnaz, Debbie Reynolds and Sammy Davis Jr. In Hollywood in those days, if you drove a Dual-Ghia you were someone. Imagine a car that looked like nothing else on the planet sitting at a stoplight on Sunset Boulevard; the light turns green and a big Dodge V-8 explodes into action. Voom! Whoosh! Gone. The Dual-Ghia only enjoyed a two-year production run, but it was stellar one. And it all began with a party at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

By Mr.choppers - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=115106074

On June 28, 1955, an event took place at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club that briefly rocked the automotive world. Following its world debut at the Geneva Auto Show, the stunning new Dual-Ghia made its first appearance in the U.S. as a luxurious Italo-American sports car that combined domestic V-8 muscle with dramatic European bodywork and sold for the rarefied price of $7,500. (Keep in mind $7,500 was a lot of money in those days – enough to put two brand new Corvettes or Thunderbirds in your driveway.) Surviving Dual-Ghias today are priced at well over half a million dollars on the collector market. The car’s unusual name, like the car itself, was an amalgam of the two worlds from which it came. “Dual” referred to Dual Motors, the automotive specialty company owned by GPYC member Eugene “Gene” Casaroll, a successful Detroit businessman who steered the one-time Dodge concept vehicle into actual production. “Ghia” stood for Carrozzeria Ghia, the noted Italian coachbuilder that had established successful styling partnerships with automakers Volkswagen, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Jaguar, Ford and Chrysler. The Dual-Ghia’s claim to fame, aside from being fast, sporty and sexy-looking, was that it was a production automobile with predominantly domestic componentry, which took much of the anxiety out of owning an exotic European car back then. Since most of the chassis – engine, transmission, rear axle, suspension, steering and brakes – was off-the-shelf Chrysler manufacture, parts and service were not a serious obstacle.
