I hope you, your family and friends have enjoyed seeing the Club decorated for Christmas. It truly showcases your Club at its very best.

For those who were not there to see Santa Claus arrive, a special note of appreciation goes to the Coast Guard Station in St. Clair Shores for their assistance in ensuring Santa's timely arrival. It seems Rudolph encountered a slight navigation hiccup, and our Coasties stepped in to make sure the holiday magic remained intact.

Looking ahead, the Winter Blast is quickly approaching. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Taffany Van Rossen and the Membership Activities Committee, this promises to be another successful event. I encourage members to get involved in some of the different committees that help in many ways to make the Club stronger. Your fresh ideas can only enhance the strength of our Club, and it's an excellent chance to connect with fellow members.

While I am in sales mode, this is the first time in many years that some boat wells are available. If you are a Social Member with a boat moored elsewhere, you can “fleet up” and bid on a well at the Club.

Finally, the second half of the Bowling year will be starting soon. Contact Bowling Director Gordy Woods to sign up! Whether you're a seasoned bowler or a newcomer, the camaraderie and fun are guaranteed. You do not need to be a professional bowler to come and have fun and meet other members.

Winter at GPYC means endless FUN and VALUE!

Feeling the winter blues? Not anymore! As a GPYC member, you have a plethora of exciting activities at your fingertips. The Club is the ultimate destination for entertaining friends, clients, or family while engaging in delightful events. Embrace your inner marksman every Saturday and Sunday with Trap Shooting at the Marine Activity Center. From 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., our expert Team will have you hitting targets like a pro. The Marine Activity Center has TVs featuring all the major games, and Chef John's Famous Prime Rib Chili is on hand to keep you warm between sessions. Shooting takes place on the second floor, offering breathtaking views of Lake St. Clair as you take aim at those elusive orange clay targets. For more information or questions about the program, reach out to Christina Noland at cnoland@gpyc.org. Safety is our top priority, so please review the rules before joining in on the Trap Shooting fun.

Meanwhile, our Platform Tennis season is in full swing, a hidden gem at the Club that some may not even know exists! Located on the northern border of the GPYC property, the Platform Tennis Center features two courts and a cozy warming house in between. The warming house is perfect for game viewing and comes equipped with restroom and kitchen facilities for your group. Members can bring guests at no charge—simply check in with the Front Gate to gain access and enjoy! Additionally, our Maintenance Team has constructed a massive ice skating rink where the Pickleball Courts are usually located, complete with night lights. As long as the temperature permits, the rink is open seven days a week for family enjoyment. Whether you're at the Platform Tennis Courts or the Skating Rink, you can order food and beverages through the Concierge Service by texting (313) 306-2437 and it will be delivered to you whenever the Club's kitchen is open.

To cap off the winter fun, mark your calendar for the 13th Annual Winter Blast Party on Saturday, January 20. This event promises new surprises, themed food, and drinks every year. It's the perfect opportunity to invite friends who might be prospective members to experience the magic of the Club during what we used to call our "offseason." As winter settles in, bringing low water levels and freezing conditions to the Harbor, it's crucial to prioritize safety around the Club.

Here are some reminders: 1. Stay Clear of Finger Piers and Docks: Please refrain from walking on the finger piers and docks for your safety.

2. Be Mindful of Ice Eaters: Take note of the Ice Eaters in operation and be aware that safety ladders may be raised or out of the water.

3. Buddy System: Travel in pairs and communicate your whereabouts to others. Always inform someone if you're venturing outside.

4. Weather-Appropriate Attire: Dress appropriately for the weather.

Keep your hands free and out of your pockets as you move around.

5. Exercise Caution on East Bridge: Exercise caution when crossing the East Bridge, especially if you're heading out for Trap Shooting.

Ice formation on walking surfaces is likely.

Prioritizing these safety measures ensures a secure and enjoyable experience despite the winter challenges.

Aaron Wagner was approved by the Certification Committee of CMAA after successfully passing an extensive certification examination on club operations. Through the Certified Club Manager designation, CMAA encourages the education and advancement of its members and assists club officers and members in securing the most efficient and successful club operations available.

About Grosse Pointe Yacht Club It is hard to miss the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club when driving down Lakeshore. The eye-catching structure and glorious property serve as a second home to many Grosse Pointers during every season.

Offering a variety of membership types, the club welcomes and attracts members of all ages. GPYC General Manager, Aaron Wagner said the club features an active, boating, membership for those who would like to harbor a boat at the club and a social membership for just about everything else.

“The GPYC is a family club, and you don’t necessarily have to be a boater to join,” Wagner said. “In fact, thanks to the vast array of programs, most of our members are social members. The GPYC is also a 12-month club. We don’t shut down in the winter. We are vibrant with activity all year.”

Being open year-round, GPYC’s list of activities spans from boating to bowling to ice skating. Wagner said the club is known for entertainment and enjoyment. “The best part of our club is the culture and community,” he added. “You can have historic and beautiful clubhouses, grounds, and amazing programs, but the glue that holds it all together is the member culture. We are ‘the fun club’ and we are very family friendly.”

In addition to the dedicated team, the club has put more than $10 million into projects and updates during the last five years.

“The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has an amazing history steeped in tradition and excellence,” he noted. “Our Board of Directors, management team and our general membership are all very aligned with the vision of where the club is headed. There is a real commitment to strive to be the best we can be.” Wagner fell in love with GPYC as a busboy at age 16, and since has been able to watch others do the same. He is proud of GPYC’s positive impact on the community.

Realistic Resolutions

With 2024 here, the number one “New Year’s Resolution” according to Forbes Magazine is, you guessed it, “improving fitness.” Even though most people’s resolution is to establish a workout routine, only about 9% of people will stick with them. That’s right, less than 1 out of 10. The reason most people quit is because they set unrealistic goals and quickly become overwhelmed. I suggest dividing your goals between those that can be accomplished either in the long or short term. Creating an action plan that links the long-term goal with the near-term achievable and realistic goals will ensure success. I like to use the SMART acronym, detailed below.

Specific - What do I want to accomplish?

Your goal should be clear and specific. Don’t just say, “I want to get in shape.” It should be something like, “lose 10 pounds,” or “run a mile in 8 minutes.”

Measurable - How will I know when it is accomplished?

Make sure to set goals that can track your progress. For example, you can track your weight, track the amount of weight you bench pressed, or amount of time you shaved off in a run.

Attainable - Is my goal challenging but achievable?

Setting a goal that is too difficult can lead to frustration and discouragement. Saying you want to run a 5-minute mile when you’ve never run in your life, will lead you nowhere. Make sure your goal is realistic and then set incremental goals. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds, set monthly goals of losing 3 pounds per month.

Relevant - Is my goal something I can do?

Getting yourself to do things you dislike will always be an uphill battle. If your goal involves activities you dislike, you’re likely to find reasons to avoid working on it. That’s why it’s best to set personal fitness goals that align with your interests.

For example, if you dislike biking and swimming, your goal shouldn’t be to complete a triathlon.

Time - When do I want to complete this goal?

Your goal should have a clear deadline or timeline. This accountability will help you stay motivated to work out, turning “someday” into “today.”

Bowling Leagues are in Full Swing!

As we approach the conclusion of the first half of the bowling season, scores have remained consistently impressive.

Here are some recent highlights: Monday Night Men’s League: Charles Molnar achieved a high score of 265, while Rear Commodore David Schaden scored an impressive 243.

Wednesday Night Mixed League: Past Commodore Kevin Granger led with a score of 244, Julie Granger scored 185, and Kim Krasemann scored 178. Kevin Killebrew showcased a remarkable performance with a staggering +104 over his average.

Thursday Morning Ladies League: Bunny (Esther) Rentschler stood out with a remarkable +107 over her average.

Thursday Night Mixed League: Sean Fannon bowled an impressive 233, Valentina Izzi Fannon scored 164, and Connie Lucchese achieved +86 over her average.

Looking ahead to the second half, our Thursday Night Mixed league has a few openings for those interested in joining.

The league bowls on Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. If you're keen on participating, please send an email to gwoods@gpyc.org.

Additionally, mark your calendars for some exciting interclubs in January. First, we'll face off against the Country Club of Detroit, featuring both ladies and men leagues. Later in January, we'll travel to the Detroit Athletic Club. Stay tuned for the results in our next issue.

As we embrace the winter months, consider making the most of your Club experience by joining us for bowling. We offer open bowling on most Friday and Saturday nights, along with Brunch and Bowl on Sunday afternoons. Contact me for availability.

Did You Know?

Bowling Edition • When you bowl an optimal strike, the ball itself only hits four pins. A right-handed bowler’s ball actually connects with the 1, 3, 5, and 9 pins (sometimes the 8 pin.) A left hander’s ball will contact the 1, 2, 5 and 8 (or 9) pin.

• Bowling balls were made of wood until the early 1900s.

• A bowling lane is 60 feet long from the foul line to the headpin - very similar to the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate in baseball (60' 6").

Month

The selected Wine of the Month for January is the Alto Moncayo Veraton. I'm thrilled to share the unique qualities of this 100% Garnacha wine. While Grenache or Garnacha is a widely planted red wine grape globally, many enthusiasts tend to gravitate towards California wines, often missing out on the extraordinary charm of old vines. The Garnacha grape, known for expressing its terroir, thrives in hot, dry climates found in Spain, as well as in parts of Italy, France, Australia, and California. Despite Grenache's fame in the Southern Rhône Valley, its roots trace back to Spain.

Bodega Alto Moncayo, situated in Borja, Spain, at an elevation of 500m above sea level, stands at the highest point of the town, near El Moncayo, the highest peak in the Iberian Mountain Range. This unique location imparts distinct characteristics to Alto Moncayo's Garnacha, setting it apart from the rest of the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen (DO) area.

The winery meticulously selects and cultivates its Garnacha vines, benefiting from a soil rich in limestone, dolomite, quartzite, and slate, allowing water to penetrate deep layers of clay.

The microclimate, characterized by heat and dryness, results in slow maturation, contributing to the wine's fullness and minerality. Notably, the age of the vines, ranging from 40 to 70 years old, plays a crucial role in the production of the Garnacha grape. These well-balanced strains boast deep root systems, fostering its grape's unique character. The wine then undergoes a 20-month aging process in new barrel. Alto Moncayo is the winery's flagship and has a complex nose featuring balsamic aromas, black fruit notes, roasted elements, and an impressive mouthfeel.

2023 Annual Meeting & Election Results On Thursday, November 9, 2023, during the Annual Meeting, we took a moment to express our gratitude to outgoing Commodore Brian Fish for his dedicated service and commendable accomplishments over the past fiscal year.

On Wednesday, November 15, members and their guests indulged in ultimate shopping soiree. Members enjoyed an exclusive evening filled with shopping, festive cheer, and the sparkle of champagne. The atmosphere led guests through a carefully curated selection of local vendors such as The Peacock Room, Glitz N’ Ears, Pink Elephant Cupcakes, Jamcat Candles and the GPYC Grog Shop, allowing them to shop unique gift options and get a head start on their Christmas shopping. It was an evening of luxury, camaraderie, and the joy of finding perfect presents for loved ones. We hope everyone had a splendid time at this event!

On Sunday, November 19, GPYC members came together to transform the Club into a festive wonderland, getting us all geared up for the Christmas spirit and eagerly awaiting Santa's arrival!

On Thursday, November 30, members had the opportunity to indulge in the stock up for the holidays sale. Local distributors such as Veritas, Great Lakes, AHD Vintners, Woodberry Wine and RNDC Wine had many tastings to offer. The Grog Shop also displayed new merchandise to purchase for the holidays. Rich Shetler said, "the ballroom was decorated beautifully for the holiday sale event. As always, Chef Eric and the culinary team also did a wonderful job on the appetizers."

Santa's

Nautical Arrival by the Coast Guard!

In a dazzling twist to our holiday traditions at the Club, this year brought forth a Christmas spectacle that had the young and young-atheart buzzing with excitement. On Sunday, November 26, Santa Claus, not arriving on his sleigh as tradition would have it, made a grand entrance courtesy of the Coast Guard!

There was anticipation as families and children gathered in the Main Dining Room, eyes sparkling with wonder and curiosity. As the vessel made its way to the dock, the crowd erupted into cheers and applause. The children, faces pressed against the windows, couldn't contain their delight as Santa stepped onto the dock, greeted by Commodore William Dillon.

Once inside, Santa, with a twinkle in his eye, took his place amidst the enchanting holiday décor in the Rotunda, where the GPYC holiday tree was waiting to be lit. The children gathered around as Santa shared tales of his nautical journey and spread holiday cheer.

annual commodore’s ball On Saturday, December 2, Commodore William Dillon and Lady Jennifer Winckler hosted the 95th Annual Commodore's Ball. This blacktie event of the year is a time-honored tradition. Members and their guests experienced a beautiful evening of spirits, dinner, and dancing.

The Commodore's Ball is steeped in tradition and was an opportunity for the membership to honor the incoming Commodore and express gratitude to departing leadership. The current Board of Directors was acknowledged, and Flag Officers were presented with the flag appropriate to their office.

The celebration began with a Grand March into the Ballroom, introducing each Past Commodore and spouses, Board of Directors and spouses, and all visiting Commodores and spouses.

After the formalities, the party began with dinner and dancing throughout the evening in our beautiful Ballroom with fellow members and friends.

Those in attendance enjoyed this fun event, making it an unforgettable night!

Sip N’ Sleigh

On Friday, December 8, members embarked on an exclusive Detroit Holiday Lights Tour hosted by The Detroit Bus Company. The excitement kicked off in the Tower Pub, featuring a Detroit Coney-themed bar and a signature welcome cocktail for all participants. The festive journey unfolded as the bus visited four distinct locations across Detroit. Campus Martius and the Detroit Holiday Market dazzled as the first stop, followed by the enchanting "Blitzen's" On Bagley for the second leg. The tour continued with a visit to the iconic Fisher Building as the third stop and concluded at Beacon Park for the fourth and final destination. Becky Weiland said, "My favorite stop was Blitzen's on Bagley. It was such a great time all around and I look forward to doing it again next year!" Cathy Champion also agreed that Blitzen's was one of her favorite stops. Cathy also said, "Campus Martius was gorgeous with its majestic tree shining and thousands of lights making it really fabulous." Cheers to a night filled with holiday splendor and delightful cocktails!

GPYC Team Spotlight Peter Marfey Peter Marfey has worked diligently at the Yacht Club for five years. In the past year, his exceptional work ethic and significant contributions to the Maintenance and Security departments led to his nomination for Employee of the Month. This outstanding performance placed him in the running for the prestigious title of Employee of the Year.

We are delighted to announce that Peter Marfey clinched the title of Employee of the Year at this year's Annual Meeting night. Peter, your hard work and dedication have not only been recognized but celebrated by the entire Yacht Club community. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to the Yacht Club's success!

What is your favorite part about working at the Club?

My favorite part of working at the Club is painting and restoring the historical building. I have a passion for what I do here.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In the summertime, I enjoy being on the water and boating. In the winter, I like to hit the slopes and go skiing. I also practice and teach Tai Chi - a particularly popular and beneficial activity for seniors, promoting movement and well-being.

Art holds a special place in my life as well. I channel my creative energy into painting and art creation, participating in local artist shows to share my work with the community.

Do you have a favorite movie? Why is that your favorite?

One of my all-time FAVORITE movies is Coming to America, with Eddie Murphy. It’s so funny. I first saw it in Ukraine. It showed me you must work hard to achieve your goals!

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

If given the choice to share a dinner with anyone in the world, my pick would be my wife and my family.

The reason is simple—I cherish the essence of quality time spent with them. I am a family man at heart, and the joy derived from being surrounded by those I love is immeasurable. The laughter, stories, and shared moments during a family gathering hold a special place in my heart.

Gentlemen (ages 12-up): Collared shirts with tailored pants or denim may be worn. Hoodies, t-shirts and hats are not permitted. Athletic attire, pants or denim with holes or rips are prohibited. Sandals, rubber shoes, Crocs or slides may not be worn.

Ladies (ages 12-up): Blouse, sweater or collared shirt with tailored pants or denim. Dresses and skirts worn in good taste are also permitted. Hoodies and t-shirts are not permitted. Ladies may wear appropriate hats. Leggings are permitted when worn as undergarments with a midthigh length top, sweater, skirt or dress.

Athletic attire, pants or denim with holes or rips are prohibited. Sandals, rubber shoes, Crocs or slides may not be worn.

Outerwear: All coats and outerwear must be worn or kept at coat check. Coats and outerwear are not to be hung on chairs in the dining room.

Kid's Club Parents – you have the opportunity to enjoy a quiet, relaxing evening at the Club, while your kids enjoy Kid’s Club on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 – 10:00 p.m. Children must be three years old and potty trained. $30 for the first child, $25 for each additional child in the family, this includes a buffet made up of some your children's favorites!

To maintain the appropriate staff-tochild ratio, the maximum number of children who may attend Kid’s Club is 6 children per sitter. Reservations are required. The cut-off for reservations is by 4:30 p.m. the day of. We understand things can happen last minute. There will be an additional $20 charge per walk-in visit.

GPYC Sailing Trophies - Part 1

Lake Huron down to Toledo on the shores of Lake Erie. George Marsh, our first commodore, served as commodore of the DRYA in 1915, 1916 and 1921.

The authors(RBS and SRB) are the custodians of the Club’s many sailing trophies and were asked to choose some to feature in this article. The following trophies were selected.

Commodore John R. Sutton Jr. Perpetual Trophy Over its forty-six year lifetime, the Com. Sutton Trophy has recognized the outstanding performance of some of the most skillful skippers and competitive yacht designs to sail the Great Lakes. The trophy was awarded continuously, beginning with the 11th Annual Bluenose Regatta Trophy Race in 1949 for Class A, B, and C Best Corrected Time.

The first winner was Wendal Anderson in Escapade and the final winner in 1995 was N. Munch in Moonraker.

This history of our Club is chronicled in a variety of ways.

Given the strong nautical orientation of a yacht club, one might logically expect that our yachting trophies would be an essential part of our history — and they are. The purpose here is to focus on the trophies awarded for sailboat racing, which has been an integral part of the Club since its inception in 1914 and subsequent joining of the Detroit River Yachting Association (DRYA) the same year.

The DRYA, now known as the Detroit Regional YachtRacing Association, was established in 1912, and the GPYC was the fourth club to join, preceded by the Detroit Yacht Club, the Detroit Boat Club, and the Country Club of Detroit.

The DRYA organizes sailboat races between member yacht clubs, which now includes twenty-seven clubs in the U.S. and Canada, extending from Port Huron and Sarnia on
