Hop on board Sunday morning at 9 AM for Dinosaur Train, an enriching new children’s program featuring the lovable character Buddy, a preschoolaged Tyrannosaurus Rex. The new series encourages basic scientific thinking skills and explores natural science, natural history and paleontology. Dinosaur Train airs Monday-Friday at 8:30 AM on GPB. Also, tune in all week for special dinosaur-themed episodes of PBS Kids’ favorites like Curious George, Sid The Science Kid, Barney, Franny’s Feet and Clifford The Big Red Dog.

And don’t miss the GPB primetime lineup featuring, Living with Dinosaurs, Planet Tales’ “Mystery of the Jurassic,” NOVA episodes “Four-Winged Dinosaur” and “Artic Dinosaurs,” plus the spectacular Dinosaurs Alive! Check out the television listings section for program airdates. But that’s not all! We’re also exploring the life of dinosaurs in the Southeast, including the Appalachiosaurus. America’s Best Idea

Showcases America’s National Treasures

What would you do if you knew you had access to a treasure in your own backyard? Georgians have access to several national treasures including Ocmulgee National Monument in Macon, Kennesaw National Battlefield National Park in Kennesaw, Andersonville National Historic Site in Andersonville, Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta. Each of these sites is operated by the National Park Service

and has joined with GPB to promote the 12hour, six-part documentary series by Ken Burns that tells the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. From Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska, the series explores the stories of people, from

GEORGIA WEIGHS IN: Obesity is a serious health concern for everyone- even children. According to the Centers for Disease Control, obese children and adolescents are at risk for health problems during their youth and as adults. Risks like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes. Obese children are more likely to become obese as adults. In Georgia, the medical costs associated with adult obesity were $2.1 billion in 2003. According to the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 18% of Georgia youth (grades 9-12) are overweight and another 14% are obese.

A CHILDHOOD OBESITY SPECIAL

The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of childhood obesity and provide resources for prevention. As part of the campaign, Georgia Weighs In: A Childhood Obesity Special will be broadcast live on Thursday, September 24 at 8 PM. Host Susan Hoffman talks with experts about nutrition, exercise, genetics and the

psychological issues that affect children who struggle with issues of weight. Volunteers from the Georgia Department of Community Health will be available by phone and a live web chat during the broadcast. Also, check out this month’s Kids & Education section for fitness tips from PBS Parents. Georgia Weighs In: A Childhood Obesity Special is being underwritten by Aetna and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Kids&Education

KEEP YOUR KIDS

HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND FIT With childhood obesity increasing at staggering rates, parents and caregivers must play an active role in protecting children's health. Eating healthy foods is a key factor in maintaining their overall wellbeing. But, this has to be balanced with regular physical activity. Children who are physically active on a regular basis will reap enormous benefits. Now that we know why children need to be active, it's time to get them up and moving. Here's how: 1. Focus on fun. You don't have to call it "exercise," just consider it an activity. Find out which ones your child likes and encourage those. 2. Limit TV and computer time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than "two hours of daily media exposure" for children ages two and older. When they are watching or clicking, make sure they take breaks and move around. 3. Schedule play dates. The key word here is "play." Have your child get together with a friend and play a game of tag, race down the block or kick a ball around. 4. Get fit as a family. Create some funny dance moves. Put up a net and shoot hoops. You could also visit a zoo, play miniature golf or enjoy other activities where a lot of ground is covered on foot. 5. Choose fitness-oriented gifts. For your child's next birthday, consider giving him or her a jump-rope, mini-trampoline, hula-hoop -- something that will encourage movement.

6. Clean up. Chores don't have to be a bore. Sing a silly song with your child as you both wipe tables and counters. See how long both of you can hold a funny face while folding and putting away clothes. Older kids can help wash the car. On a hot day, this can turn into water play. 7. Skip the mall. Go to the playground. Sure, most malls have kids' play areas. But, when the weather is nice, enjoy a local park or playground instead. Fresh air always does a body good; especially a little one. 8. Be a model of fitness. It's much easier to motivate kids to be active, if you lead an active lifestyle. Whether you follow a structured fitness program or are lucky to get in some morning stretches, let them see you moving. It will likely inspire them to do the same. 9. Encourage walking or biking whenever feasible. This is easy to accomplish if you live near stores, libraries or other places you visit regularly. If you live in a remote area, establish a safe route to tour on bike or on foot with your child. 10. Be a fitness advocate at your child's school. Do you know how much physical activity your child gets at school? Now's the time to find out. If you don't like the answer, gather support from other parents to enforce positive changes.

Georgia Public Broadcasting has received a grant from the Aetna Foundation to conduct a “Happy, Healthy Kids Initiative,” that addresses how healthy diets and regular physical activity can help prevent the risk of developing chronic health problems, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and heart disease. In this month’s article, Aetna provides tips on children’s exercise.

THE PRINCIPAL STORY The Principal Story tells two stories, painting a dramatic portrait of the challenges facing America’s public schools — and of the great difference a dedicated principal can make. Tresa Dunbar (pictured) is a second-year principal at Chicago’s Nash Elementary, where 98 percent of students come from low-income families; in Springfield, Illinois, Kerry Purcell has led Harvard Park Elementary, with similar demographics, for six years. Tod Lending (P.O.V. “Omar & Pete,” 2005) and David Mrazek followed both women over the course of a school year, discovering each one’s unique style yet similar passions. The Principal Story takes the viewer along for an emotional ride that reveals what effective educational leadership looks like in the 21st century. Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 10 PM. Encores Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 AM. In conjunction with the airing of The Principal Story, GPB will also host advanced screening in conjunction with the Southern Regional Education Board, Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement, and Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education. For more information go to www.gpb.org/principal-story.
