In this special presentation from the United Kingdom's groundbreaking archaeology series, Time Team takes viewers on an expedition to Jamestown, where a British company's commercial enterprise planted the seeds of the United States. There have been nearly a million finds from the site's trenches, but this anniversary special is far more than just an excavation. The team retrieves piles of perfectly preserved 17th-century pieces, traces the names and life stories of the early American pioneers, and learns why a third of them died within months of arrival. Wednesday, August 19, 8 PM

In advance of the theatrical release of the film comedy Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep as public television icon Julia Child, PBS presents a retrospective that includes some of the most memorable episodes from Julia’s classic cooking series, The French Chef: “Bouillabaisse à la Marseillaise,” “To Roast A Chicken” and “The Omelette Show.” In addition to testimonials from noted chefs, the program features commentary from Streep and author Julie Powell, who wrote the book on which the film is based. LEGENDS

FROM BIG BAND TO MOTOWN WITH A SPECIAL LOOK AT T H E K I N G O F R O C K N ’ R O L L A N D T H E P I O N E E R O F P R O T E S T M U S I C

TUNE IN THIS MONTH AS GPB PRESENTS A VARIETY OF NEW MUSIC SPECIALS FEATURING MOTOWN ARTISTS, ELVIS, BIG BAND GREATS AND A STAR-STUDDED TRIBUTE TO FOLK LEGEND PETE SEEGER:

Love Me Tender: The Love Songs of Elvis Premieres Friday, July 31, 7 PM

Motown Memories Premieres Saturday, August 1, 11 AM and 10 PM

A major reason for Elvis Presley's massive, unprecedented appeal to women audiences of all ages was his love songs. Always a true romantic, Elvis recorded many, many love songs throughout his career, beginning with "I Want You I Need You I Love You" in 1956 and running the entire span of his life. Entire eras of his remarkable life and career can be evoked by the mere mention of the title of one of his many love songs. Mention "Love Me Tender" and a hundred images spring to mind. The same can be said for his many other songs of romance. Elvis and his love songs had remained an unexplored area of Elvis' remarkable career. Now, Love Me Tender - The Love Songs of Elvis tells the warm story of the tender side of the King of Rock and Roll. Narrated by Ashley Judd, Love Me Tender is Elvis as you've never seen him.

Following up on 2005's hit Motown - The Early Years, My Music presents more great Motown memories with a definitive collection of tunes from Hittsville, USA. This special focuses on archival hits and rare interviews from five Motown Legends: The Temptations, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Diana Ross & The Supremes and Marvin Gaye. Host Mary Wilson, one of the original members of The Supremes, returns to the original Detroit recording studio, affectionately known as Hitsville, where Motown started in 1959 and nurtured the careers of so many artists still heard on the radio today. Motown Memories pays tribute to a body of music that has endured for half a century, bringing soul music to the mainstream. The program is part of a goal to preserve vital American music legacies in the My Music series, exclusively on PBS.

Havens, Roger McGuinn, Ani DiFranco, Taj Mahal, Ben Harper and Dave Matthews, and many others who performed songs inspired by Seeger’s music and activism. Concert highlights include Seeger’s leading the audience in a rousing sing-along of “Amazing Grace.” Other classic favorites compelling the enthusiastic audience to join in were “We Shall Overcome” and “This Land Is Your Land.”

The Big Band Years Premieres Sunday, August 9, 2 PM

Great Performances “Pete Seeger’s 90th Birthday Celebration From Madison Square Garden” Premieres Wednesday, August 5, 9 PM With a career spanning more than half a century, legendary folk artist, political activist and avid environmentalist Pete Seeger turned 90 in May 2009. In honor of the milestone birthday and in tribute to Seeger’s lifetime of achievement in music and activism, a multi-generational roster of artists, whose music has been shaped by Seeger’s vision, gathered at Madison Square Garden on May 3, 2009, to celebrate his lifetime achievement.

This special returns to the era of the legendary orchestras, great singers and song standards drawing upon the most beloved melodies that kept the home fires burning and soldiers’ hearts alive during World War II. With rare and vintage footage from the 1930s-1940s, The Big Band Years turns back the clock to a time when swing musicians ruled the radio and night clubs, bringing a joyful escape to Americans during one of the most turbulent eras in the nation’s history. Tune in for favorites like Glenn Miller - “In the Mood” and “Chattanooga ChooChoo;” plus Harry James - “Tuxedo Junction” and hits from clarinet king Benny Goodman and Cotton Club alumnus Cab Calloway performing his animated rendition of “Minnie the Moocher,” a #1 hit from 1931.

Joining Seeger for this once-in-a-lifetime concert event were more than 40 artists, including Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Richie

GOOD EATING HABITS

Left unchecked, childhood obesity can be a pathway to a lifetime of other ailments and diseases — including increased risk for heart disease, depression and Type 2 diabetes.

Set an example for them —eat smart and get active! Help your children manage their weight by both modeling healthy eating patterns and by providing steady guidance on food portions. When is enough actually too much? These guidelines can help: Use MyPyramid Plan at www.mypyramid.gov to make smart food choices from every food group and fi nd the right balance between food and exercise.

TIPS A portion. A serving. Is there a difference? A portion is the amount of food you choose to eat. A serving is a standard amount set by the U.S. government — or sometimes by recipes, cookbooks and diets.

How big are my portions? The portion size your children eat may be three times the standard serving! See the “servings per container” line on the packaging label to find out how many servings are inside. Here’s a way to start recognizing standard serving sizes: For one week, use measuring cups and spoons when cooking, and compare them to standard serving sizes on the Nutrition Facts label. Put the measured food on a plate before you start eating. It will help you compare a standard serving to the portion you typically eat.

Control the portions at home These ideas can help your children control the portions they eat: ■ Put a standard serving on a plate and eat it from there — not from the box or bag. ■ Don’t have your family eat food in front of the TV or during other activity. Provide an atmosphere at mealtime

You will find a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Nutrition Facts label on most packaged foods. Read the label to understand how many calories and how much fat, carbohydrate, sodium and other nutrients are in one serving. preventing childhood obesity where children can take the time to pay attention to their food, while participating in family discussions. ■ Encourage the following eating habits: • Eat slowly so your brain can get the message that your stomach is full. • Eat seconds on vegetables and salads instead of higher-fat foods or desserts. • Eat three sensible meals a day. Don’t skip meals — it can lead to larger portions at your next meal or snack. • For treats like chips and ice cream, eat one serving.

Control the portions when eating out Research shows what we already assumed — the more you eat out, the more body fat you have. When your family eats away from home, use these tips to control your child’s portions: ■ Share meals, order half portions or order an appetizer as a main meal. ■ Encourage your child to stop eating when they begin to feel full. ■ Don’t let “supersized” beverages or soft drinks lead to “supersized” children. Order a small size instead. ■ Traveling? Take along nutritious foods and snacks that won’t spoil. Here are some suggestions: fresh fruit, small cans of fruit, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, whole grain crackers, carrot sticks, air-popped popcorn and bottled water. ■ Choose restaurants that serve salads, or choose the smaller burger with lettuce and tomato. Choose water or low-fat milk instead of a soft drink.

More food for less money: Is it really a good value? Georgia Public Broadcasting has received a grant from the Aetna Foundation to conduct a “Happy, Healthy Kids Initiative,” that addresses how healthy diets and regular physical activity can help prevent the risk of developing chronic health problems, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and heart disease. In this month’s article, Aetna provides tips on healthy eating. Look for more information about the initiative in next month's issue of experience and online at www.gpb.org.

Have you noticed that it costs just a few cents more to get a larger serving of fries or a soft drink? Those larger portions may seem like a good value. But you’ll end up with more food — and more calories —than you need. Before you buy your child that next “value combo,” make sure you are putting equal value on your child’s health.

Your Graduation Stories!

Georgia Public Broadcasting is gathering stories and interviews as well as video and audio clips that reflect the journey that middle and high school students make towards the goal of high school graduation. We know that one story may not look like another. We welcome them all! We are particularly interested in “user-generated” content, especially studentcreated multi-media (videos, interviews) of their academic struggles and successes and those who have made an impact on them. If you would like to feature your students, your school, and your efforts to impact the graduation rate across the state, please share this message with those in your school who can bring this project to life—especially the students themselves! Submissions can be sent in the following formats: Digital Pictures: JPG, GIF, or PNG; **Video Clips (30 min. or less): MOV, AVI, MPEG, or WMV; Audio Clips: MP3 The final product will be available as part of GPB’s Georgia Graduation Stories Blog which can be found at www.gpb.org/georgia-graduation-stories. GPB RADIO

SCHEDULE

MAKES

CHANGES GPB Radio has recently made several changes to its schedule. The biggest change involves Georgia Gazette, GPB’s awardwinning daily radio newsmagazine, which has gone on hiatus. The break will allow a restructuring of GPB’s News Department as reporters take on added responsibilities in television and new media. News Director Susanna Capelouto says many of the reports and features that have aired on Gazette will now air during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

LYNNE ROSSETTO

KASPER

THE SPLENDID

TABLE

In addition, GPB Radio’s Sunday schedule now has a new look, with the addition of a popular food program, a repeat broadcast of one of NPR’s most listened-to programs, and a time change for another NPR program. The changes begin at 11 AM with a second weekly broadcast of NPR’s irreverent Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me. Now GPB Radio listeners have two chances each week to hear NPR’s weekly news quiz, which features host Peter Sagal and three competing comic celebrities.

WORLD OF

LISTINGS OPERAAUGUST 2009

That’s followed at Noon by a permanent slot for American Public Media’s The Splendid Table, a culinary, culture, and lifestyle one-hour program that celebrates food and its ability to touch the lives and feed the souls of everyone. Each week, award-winning host Lynne Rossetto Kasper leads listeners on a journey of the senses and hosts discussions with a variety of writers and personalities who share their passion for the culinary delights. The regular time slot follows several trial broadcasts following the Metropolitan Opera this past Winter and Spring which resulted in positive comments from many GPB listeners. The last change sees Fresh Air Weekend moving to a new time slot at 7 PM, following Big Band Jump. Fresh Air Weekend features the best of Terry Gross’s interviews from her weekday Fresh Air program. As a result of these changes, Saint Paul Sunday will no longer air. That show is no longer producing new episodes. Also, This American Life is leaving the schedule.

08/01/2009 LEOS JANACEK: The Cunning Little Vixen Houston Grand Opera Patrick Summers, conductor CAST: Lisa Saffer (Vixen); Hector Vasquez (Forrester); Jennifer Root (Forrester's Wife); Ekaterina Gorlova (Young Vixen); Fiona Murphy (Fox GoldenStripe); Meredith F. Flores (Cricket); Alina Slavik (Grasshopper); Jon Kolbet (Mosquito/Schoolmaster); Allan Lawrence (Frog); Maria Markina (Lapak/Woodpecker); Laurie Lester (Pepik); Rebeka Camm (Chocholka the Hen); Albina Shagimuratova (Frantik); Alicia Gianni (Rooster/Jay); Ryan McKinny (Badger); Bradley Garvin (Parson); Beau Gibson (Pasek); Liam Bonner (Harasta); Tamara Wilson (Pasek's Wife) Based on an illustrated tale published as a newspaper serial, this fanciful opera is one of Janacek's true masterworks - at once charming, frightening, tragic and, in the end, life-affirming. 08/08/2009 HENRY PURCELL: The Fairy Queen Royal Albert Hall, London (The Proms) CAST: TBA (to include sopranos Lucy Crowe, Claire Debono, Anna Devin and Carolyn Sampson; tenors Robert Burt, Ed Lyon, Sean Clayton and Adrian Ward; bass-baritone Andrew Foster-Williams) Technically, this drama is called a "semi-opera." Still, semi- or not, “The Fairy Queen” was the most lavish work of its kind when it first appeared in 1692. This production comes to us fresh from its late-July premiere at Royal Albert Hall, as part of London's famous Proms.

CAST: Yosemeh Adjei (Ezio); Netta Or (Fulvia); Mariselle Martinez (Valentiniano); Hilke Andersen (Onoria); Donat Havar (Massimo); Marcell Bakonyi (Varo) While “Ezio” may lack the lustrous ensembles that characterize some of Handel's best operas, the musical and dramatic impact of its many spectacular solo arias make its characters some of the most vivid that Handel ever evoked. 08/29/2009 GIUSEPPE VERDI: Aida Houston Grand Opera Carlo Rizzi, conductor CAST: Zvetelina Vassileva (Aida); Marco Berti (Radames); Dolora Zajick (Amneris); Gordon Hawkins (Amonasro); Tigran Martirossian (Ramfis); Bradley Garvin (King of Egypt); Tamara Wilson (Priestess); Beau Gibson (Messenger) One of the world's most popular operas, Verdi's drama takes a familiar plot element - the thorny love triangle - and reinvents it using strikingly complex characters who confront their anxieties and passions amidst the mystery and spectacle of ancient Egypt.
