LET’S GET
THE SHOW
ON THE
ROAD
GPB’s popular original series Georgia Traveler gets back on the road this month for the launch of its third season. Each week, viewers will be treated to "Tours of Georgia,” and this Halloween viewers will get a real treat with the “Ghost Tour of Georgia” episode. The show begins in the beautiful historic coastal city of Savannah, which has been dubbed America's most haunted city. Co-host David Zelski ventures into the city's oldest standing building, built in 1734, a restaurant now known as the Pirate's House. Co-host Valarie Edwards then features our weekly getaway in Americus known as the Windsor Hotel. (Pictured on the cover) But beware, the Windsor has a few haunted secrets of its own…David then discovers Civil War apparitions in Chickamauga and a spooky, but tasty restaurant that is literally, "gone with the wind". Georgia Traveler also visits Netherworld in Norcross, a haunted house rated one of the scariest in America. Friday, October 30, 9 PM Saturday, October 31, 6:30 PM

Cloud atop the Arrowhead Mountains
WILD HORSES COULDN’T
DRAG ME AWAY Unless you’re a true horse afficianado, your first thought at the mention of wild horses may be the title of the famous Rolling Stones’ song. However, as Cloud: Challenge of the Stallions reveals, these magnificent animals also have a story of triumph and heartbreak that everyone can relate to. In the season premiere of Nature, filmmaker Ginger Kathrens brings viewers the latest look at Cloud, a white stallion whose life she has chronicled on film since his birth in the wild in 1995. Surviving the sometimes brutal conditions of the Rockies, the predatory attacks of mountain lions that hunt young foals and the challenges of bachelor stallions trying to steal his mares, Cloud commands the largest band of wild horses in the Arrowhead Mountains of Montana.

AN APPLE A DAY
KEEPS THE
DOCTOR AWAY Famous as the source of Eve’s temptation in the Bible and also praised for its health benefits with the well known phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” the apple holds an interesting place in history. The Botany of Desire, based on Michael Pollan’s bestselling book, takes viewers on an eye-opening exploration of how the apple, along with the tulip, marijuana and the potato evolved to satisfy humankind’s most basic desires for sweetness, beauty, intoxication and control and how humans are intricately woven into the web of nature, not standing outside it. GPB SAYS
“welcome ” TO SLANGMAN’S WORLD
On Monday, October 5, GPB will welcome an exciting new series of short programs which help to prepare children for a global future by teaching world languages and cultures. Slangman’s World is lead by Slangman (a.k.a. David Burke) – a live-action, quirky, fun-loving wizard and inventor who interacts with the animated characters and kids at home to encourage them to participate in each learning adventure. In Slangman’s enchanted multicultural house, each character serves a specific function to help children broaden their language skills and their view of the world. Children will love Wordy, the language dictionary who dreams of filling his pages with words from other languages so that he can take his place in the Great Hall of Books. Wordy is also joined by Gizma, a resourceful girl robot and Crash, a thrill-seeking bird who delivers the word of the day. Slangman’s World will air in between regularly scheduled children’s programs in GPB’s daily program lineup. The program is currently airing in over 170 countries over the American Forces Network (AFN) with a goal of helping military families integrate into their new environments overseas. The show stars David Burke, who became known as “Slangman” from his 6-year regular radio spot on Voice of America. Burke has authored ninety books on language. He penned both a series of books introducing children to world languages through fairytales that start in English and morph into a different language, and also a collection of books teaching slang terms and idioms to adult nonnative speakers of English. Slangman’s books are distributed throughout the world and are an integral part

of the language curriculum at UCLA, as well as Berlitz International. Burke not only performs as host of the show, he also does the voices of all of the characters for Slangman’s World. Additionally, Burke writes the score, songs, and lyrics for each episode. “Music is an integral part of our show,” explains Burke. “Our goal is to make sure that kids have fun as they sing in different languages. But we adults will know the truth – that the kids are actually learning!” The Slangman’s World show is produced all under one roof at Veritas Studios in Los Angeles. The show is being produced by David Burke, Kenny Gage, and Timothy Michael Harrington. Veritas partner, Andrew Pagana, is directing. The show’s animation team boasts previous stays at Nickelodeon, Klasky-Csupo, Disney, and Warner Bros. Slangman’s World is a timely project given that the U.S. Department of Education is focusing its efforts on the National Security Language Initiative whose goal is to increase the number of American children fluent in foreign languages.
