This two-hour documentary is based on the book “The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World” and is written and presented by bestselling author, economist, historian and Harvard professor Niall Ferguson (pictured). Ferguson traces the evolution of money and demonstrates that financial history is the essential backstory behind all history. “Everyone needs to understand the complex history of money and our relationship to it,” he says. “By learning how societies have continually created and survived financial crises, we can find solid solutions to today’s worldwide economic emergency.” As he traverses historic financial hot spots around the world, Ferguson illuminates fundamental economic concepts and speaks with leading experts in the financial world. Wednesdays, July 8 – 15, 9 PM

GPB JOB FAIR AND JOBS IN GEORGIA BROADCASTS HELP OVER 4,000 GEORGIANS SEEKING JOBS Photo Credit: Cheryl Alford

On Sunday, May 17, Georgia Public Broadcasting and the Georgia Department of Labor produced Job Fair 2009. This marked the 15th annual Job Fair telecast and proved to be the biggest yet! A monumental undertaking, this interactive broadcast helped thousands of Georgians answer their job search questions. Nearly 4,000 calls were answered during the broadcast, and many viewers took advantage of the job listings the show provided. GPB and DOL also hosted a live web chat

during the broadcast that attracted 185 people. Job Fair 2009 also featured stories from WMAZ in Macon, WALB in Albany and an actual GDOL Career Expo at the Macon Centreplex. As in past years, GPB Radio also broadcast Jobs In Georgia. This year’s program aired on Friday, May 15, and assisted over 50 listeners who called in with questions.

TmeTeam Takes Viewers Into The Trenches Of America’s Most Fascinating Archaeological Sites PBS’s all-new summer series Time Team America brings viewers into the trenches of working archaeological digs for three intense days — showing them what it takes to uncover the story of America. Premiering Wednesday, July 8 at 8 PM on GPB, Time Team America descends on a new site each Wednesday through August 5, traveling to Roanoke Island, North Carolina, the swamps of South Carolina, the fields of rural Illinois, the canyons of Utah and the South Dakota prairie in search of America’s roots. Part extreme adventure, part science and part reality show, the five-part series takes viewers deep into the trenches of America’s most intriguing archaeological sites. In each episode, the show’s team of top scientists has three days to uncover the buried secrets of their assigned dig. Every hour counts as they piece together the past, using the latest technology, decades of combined experience and their own sharp wits. Far from the comfort of a museum or science lab, the team faces searing heat, driving rain, alligator-infested swamps, frayed nerves and inevitable technical setbacks. Through it all, the audience peers over the shoulders of the archaeologists at work, eavesdropping

on intense conversations and sharing the rush of discovery as artifacts emerge from the ground. Regardless of conditions or impediments, the team strives to uncover critical discoveries that fill in the missing pieces of what is known with the proof of what is found. A chip of pottery becomes colonial kitchenware; a slate pencil suggests a 19thcentury schoolhouse; a stone projectile point indicates a 13,000-year-old tool factory; and a centuries-old broken bottle leads to adventurous tales of the Wild West. In exchange for an abundance of fascinating stories and intriguing mystery, the chosen sites are enriched by Time Team America’s work. Many excavation sites wait years between discoveries due to lack of funding, labor, expertise or equipment. The Time Team America cohort gives sites an intensive three-day boost, offering consulting from across disciplines, access to the latest scanning and imaging technology, artists’ renderings, professional documentation and even a precision backhoe operator when necessary.

GPB Assists Georgia Homeowners With Multi-Media Initiative

Mortgage Crisis Facing the

Are you worried about paying your mortgage in the wake of a job loss? Are you wondering how to refinance your home loan because of rising interest rates on your current mortgage? Are you worried that you may be the victim of a mortgage scam? Georgia Public Broadcasting is addressing these questions and other concerns of Georgia citizens with special programming that is part of Facing The Mortgage Crisis, a national public broadcasting initiative.

In partnership with WPBA Channel 30 in Atlanta, GPB will produce a 60-minute live television program that will be simulcast on both stations Thursday, July 23 beginning at 8 PM. In addition, the program will also be simulcast throughout Georgia on GPB Radio and WABE FM in Atlanta. Experts will be standing by live to take callers’ questions and requests for information that relates to the current mortgage and housing crisis. Web users of gpb.org will also be able to take part in an online chat with experts during the broadcast on July 23. According to the latest statistics, metro Atlanta has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation and the Brunswick area has also been severely affected. Experts predict that the situation is likely to get worse before it gets better because a large percentage of the adjustable rate mortgages haven’t even kicked in yet. Layoffs, job loss and increasing medical costs have contributed to the current mortgage crisis.

Facing The Mortgage Crisis will examine each of these factors and other topics including the importance of seeking help early through counseling agencies such as the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, and other HUD - approved agencies. People will receive practical information on loan modification and avoiding mortgage scams, as well as receiving advice on budgeting and taking charge of your credit.

The impact of foreclosures on individual home values within communities has been in many cases disastrous. Facing The Mortgage Crisis will look at programs that help communities, such as the Neighborhood Stabilization program and new incentives for buyers of foreclosed properties that seek to improve neighborhood home values. GPB is also working with several community organizations to provide expertise for the programming and additional resources for viewers, listeners and web users. Community partners include the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, HUD, Progressive Redevelopment Inc. and the United Way. WordGirl

Summer Road Trip

WordGirl is off and running this summer for a special week of episodes that match her against a host of vocabulary villains in the most unlikely of places. The WordGirl Summer Road Trip airs Monday July 13 through Friday, July 17 at 4:30 PM on GPB and features two brand-new episodes premiering on Monday and Tuesday. The week finds our pint-sized superhero facing definition

dilemmas in places that are perfect for summer fun — riding The Coaster at the amusement park, roughing it at a woodland camp site, on a field trip to a candy factory and out on the open road. Will the Botsfords’ family vacation get diverted by Dr. Two-Brains? Tune in to find out!

Monday, July 13 (repeats Friday, July 17) “ROBO-CAMPING” It’s off to the woods for a serene camping trip with Becky, Violet, Tobey…and his robots. While the other campers attempt to rough it, Tobey commands his robots to do all of his tasks and create a luxurious weekend free from work. But will Tobey and his robots survive an unexpected thunderstorm?

Wednesday, July 15 “THEME PARK WHAM-PAGE” Becky and Bob are anxiously waiting in line for their chance to ride The Coaster-the ultimate new amusement park ride. The Whammer's enthusiasm for chocolate hot dogs and hi-striker machines at the park could ruin a totally fun day. Will WordGirl forfeit her chance to ride the coaster in order to stop the Whammer from destroying the park? “CHUCK MAKES A BUCK” WordGirl helps Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy get a job as the spokesman for Edible Edibles Sandwiches, hoping he will give up a life of crime to stay on the straight and narrow. But Chuck becomes determined to show people what a real sandwich is.

“THE STEW, THE PROUD…” Time is running out for Becky to return her library books and maintain her perfect record when Raul Demiglasse and the Butcher go head-to-head in a culinary showdown. Tuesday, July 14 “WHO WANTS CANDY?” On a field trip to the local candy factory, The Birthday Girl goes on a candy eating spree. WordGirl must find a way to save the city's candy and win back her best friend and field trip buddy, Violet. “BIG’S BIG BOUNCE” Becky and Bob join the City Scout Troop only to discover Mr. Big is the Guest Troop Leader. He vows to motivate Troop 865 to sell the most Scholastic Crunch Granola Bars in order to win the world famous Mega-Jump Trampoline.

Thursday, July 16 “TINY BIG” Mr. Big manufactures the ultimate teen idol, Tiny Big, to steal WordGirl's thunder and brainwash the town into spending all their money on pop star merchandise. “HIGHWAY TO HAVARTI” The Botsfords’ family vacation gets diverted when Becky discovers that Dr. TwoBrains is going to be performing his latest heist at the International Cheese Exposition.

Check out the WordGirl website at pbskidsgo.org/wordgirl for free interactive games, activities for parents and children and lesson plans for teachers to enhance vocabulary development and general literacy.

Special Programs Highlight

July4thRadio Schedule

A Capitol Fourth The evening of July 4th will feature several special programs on the GPB Radio Network. It all starts at 8PM, following A Prairie Home Companion with the annual broadcast of A Capitol Fourth live from Washington, D.C. The nation's biggest Independence Day celebration includes a musical and fireworks extravaganza live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Hosted by Jimmy Smits and NPR's Lisa Simeone, this year's A Capitol Fourth features Barry Manilow with the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, international pop sensation Natasha Bedingfield, the Tony and Grammy Award-winning cast of Jersey Boys, multi-Grammy Award-nominee Michael Feinstein, and acclaimed classical pianist Andrew von Oeyen. The first segment includes a 1-1/2 hour PBS simulcast and is followed by a half hour of music with similarly-themed content.

Following A Capitol Fourth, GPB will present a special edition of GPB On Stage, featuring two hours of locally-produced Georgia programs. Up first is 25th Anniversary of Song from the Gwinnett Choral Guild, featuring special songs and highlights from the worlds of Folk Music, Jazz, Spirituals and Broadway, with special sections focused on America and Peace. The program, directed by Artistic Director G. Phillip Shoultz, III, was recorded May 16th in Lawrenceville. That’s followed by an hour of Soiree Musicale from Shorter College’s Friends of Music with the Notables. This concert, recorded in March in Rome, features songs like “I Love Paris,” “Michelle,” “Lullaby of Birdland” and a lot more. In addition, GPB Radio will broadcast the irreverent Independence Day special featuring the comedy group, The Capitol Steps, on Friday, July 3rd, at 6pm in place of Georgia Gazette.

Capitol Steps The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded 29 albums, including their latest, “Obama Mia”. They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

Also, in place of the regular Consumer Call-In Show on July 3rd at 3PM, GPB will offer a one-hour special Born on the Fourth of July: A Popular Song Celebration of Independence Day. Celebrate the birth and legacy of America with music from a recently-reissued album of duets from national icons Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong (whose birthday was long thought to fall on the same day as the holiday) and patriotic popular song from Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Paul Robeson, Peggy Lee, Margaret Whiting, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Paul Desmond. Both festive and reflective, the program is hosted by David Brent Johnson.
