The bets were huge and risky: billions of dollars on the housing market. The upside was undeniable: Superbanks reaped billions of dollars, dominated the landscape and gobbled up competitors. Then, the bottom dropped out — the massive losses on Wall Street nearly broke the banks. In the worst crisis in decades, brandname banks are on the brink of failure. Now, as the federal government contemplates what could become a massive nationalization of the industry, Frontline goes behind closed doors to tell the inside story of how things went so wrong so fast and to document efforts to stabilize the industry. Pictured: Bank of America Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Lewis speaks on the changing financial services industry, September 19, 2008, during an address at the National Black MBA Association 30th annual conference in Washington. GPB SCREENING FOR KEN BURNS’ NEW FILM THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA ATTRACTS OVER 1,000 ATTENDEES

GPB received an overwhelming response to the recent screening of renowned filmmaker Ken Burns’ new documentary series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. Over 1,000 people attended the event, which was held at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church on the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. The 12-hour, six-part documentary series, which premieres on GPB September 27 – October 2, traces the birth of the national parks idea and was filmed over the course of more than six years in some of nature’s most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska.

GPB hosted the screening in cooperation with The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Earthwise, REI, The National Parks Conservation Association and The African American Experience Fund of the National Park Foundation. The screening is part of a national PBS station outreach campaign that hopes to create a larger discussion about a variety of topics: the unique American idea (and ideal) of setting aside these vast pieces of land, the importance of preserving our natural environment and cultural history, the fragile relationship between development and preservation and the on-going need to create greater accessibility to these treasures so all residents of America have access to them.

Attendees were treated to an exclusive preview of the film, followed by a discussion and audience Q & A with Burns and park ranger Shelton Johnson, who participated in the film. Dr. Robert Pratt, chair of the University of Georgia’s history department also took part in the discussion, in which Burns and Johnson highlighted the series’ story of people from every conceivable cultural background who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved. “Our national parks are a defining part of who we are as a people,” Burns has said in describing the film.” We’re hopeful new generations of Americans will discover our parks, embrace them and pass them on to their children as part of their heritage.”

Tips For Summer Reading

What comes to mind when you think about summer with your children? Swimming? Summer camp? Barbecues? Music in the park? This year, why not make sharing books part of your family's summer fun?

Teachers and literacy experts agree that children of all ages need to be read to or to read by themselves and to talk about books over the summer. When you read or talk to your young child about

books, she develops important language skills, understandings about books and print, and knowledge about how stories are constructed that will help her to become a strong reader and writer. Your school-aged child's summer reading and book discussions will help him maintain his reading skills, improve his reading fluency, and learn new vocabulary and concepts. Most importantly, when parents and children enjoy summer reading together, children develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime.

1

6

Be a reader and writer yourself. When you spend time reading books on the beach or even directions for how to put together the grill this summer, you demonstrate for your child that reading is both fun and useful.

2

Set aside a consistent time each day for reading. Depending on your family's schedule, reading time might be in the morning, afternoon, or before bed. Whatever time you choose, stick to it, but also remember that flexibility around trips and special family events is OK.

3

Read aloud to your reader. As school-aged children become better readers, parents often stop reading aloud to them. However, by reading more difficult books aloud to your reader, you help him learn new vocabulary words, concepts, and ways of telling stories or presenting information. You also enjoy the closeness of sharing a book with your child.

4

Connect read-aloud choices to summer activities. Read your child books about camping, such as “Webster and Arnold Go Camping”, before or after a camping trip. When you read and discuss books about things your child has experienced, you help her learn important vocabulary and extend her understanding of experiences.

5

Allow your child to choose books for summer reading. While it is important for your child to complete reading required by his school, it is equally important for him to read about topics that interest him, whether it is insects, dragons, or a favorite fiction series.

Help your child select books at a comfortable level. Listen to your child read. If he reads smoothly, uses expression, and can accurately tell you what he read, the book is probably at a comfortable level. If you are having troubling judging, consult your local children's librarian, who is likely to be an expert at matching books to readers. In addition, teach your child to use the "Rule of Thumb" in selecting books: If he makes 5 or more errors in reading a page of about 50 words, the book is too challenging.

7

Encourage your child not to limit summer reading to books. Encourage your child to read the sports page to check up on her favorite baseball team or to read children's magazines such as Ranger Rick, National Geographic World, and New Moon.

8

Read a book and watch the video together. When you finish reading and viewing, discuss the similarities and differences and talk about which version you prefer. Many books, including “Stone Fox”, “Sarah, Plain and Tall”, and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, are available in movie versions.

9

Take books along on outings. Pack books in your beach bag or picnic basket, and bring a stack on long car rides. You and your child can enjoy books together anywhere you go this summer.

10

Encourage your child to write this summer, too. From writing postcards to friends and relatives to keeping a journal while on a trip, summer presents unique ways for your child to write about his own experiences. Have your child pack a disposable camera on vacations or day trips and help him create a book about his experiences.

Airs Saturday afternoons at 1:30 PM on GPB Radio

The schedule for this month is as follows: 06/06/2009 Bela Bartok: Bluebeard's Castle and Giacomo Puccini: Gianni Schicchi Washington National Opera Washington National Opera Orchestra and Chorus Giovanni Reggioli, conductor Cast: (Bluebeard): Samuel Ramey (Duke Bluebeard); Denyce Graves (Judith) (Schicchi): Samuel Ramey (Gianni Schicchi); Amanda Squitieri (Lauretta); Elizabeth Bishop (Zita); Antonio Gandia (Rinuccio); Robert Baker (Gherardo); Christina Martos (Nella); Tony Teleky (Gherardino); Stefano de Peppo (Betto di Signa); Valeriano Lanchas (Simone); Trevor Scheunemann (Marco); Leslie Mutchler (La Ciesca); Obed Urena (Spinelloccio); James Shaffran (Ser Armantio de Nicolao); David Morris (Pinello); Matthew Osifchin (Guccio) Samuel Ramey stars in both halves of an engaging double bill, presenting two very different approaches to the mysteries of death. In Bluebeard's Castle, a slow terror unfolds as a woman (Denyce Graves) gradually realizes that the new man in her life will soon threaten her very existence. In Gianni Schicchi, Puccini virtuosically employs an ensemble cast in the story of the wily title character, who exploits everyone else's greed towards his own ends. 06/13/2009 C.W. Gluck: Iphigenie en Aulide Teatro dell'Opera, Rome Rome Opera Orchestra and Chorus Ricardo Muti, conductor Cast: Krassimira Stoyanova (Iphigenie); Alexey Tikhomirov (Agamenon); Avi Klemberg (Achille); Ekaterina Gubanova (Clytemnestre); Beatriz Diaz (Diane) Ipigenie en Tauride was Gluck's first French opera, and when he brought it to the tradition-bound Paris Opera the composer created quite a stir by demanding that the principal performers do more than just sing -- he also wanted

them to act! That was a bold move at the time, but the result was one of his most powerful dramas. 06/20/2009 Hector Berlioz: Beatrice and Benedict Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Paris National Orchestra of France Sir Colin Davis, conductor Cast: Joyce di Donato (Beatrice); Charles Workman (Benedict); Nicolas Cavallier (Don Pedro); Nathalie Manfrino (Hero); Jean-Francois Lapointe (Claudio); Jean-Philippe Laffont (Somarone); Elodie Mechain (Ursula) Berlioz's dynamic and trendsetting orchestral music is a popular staple in the concert hall, and while his operas aren't nearly so familiar, they're equally brilliant. This production from Paris is led by Colin Davis, one of the world's leading Berlioz interpreters. 06/27/2009 G.F. Handel: Faramondo Metropolitan Theatre of Lausanne I Barocchisti Diego Fasolis, conductor Max Emanuel Cencic (Faramondo); Sophie Karthäuser (Clotilde); Marina de Liso (Rosimonda); Insung Sinn (Gustavo); Philippe Jaroussky (Adolfo); Xavier Sabata Corominas (Gernando); Fulvio Bettini (Teobaldo); Johann Ebert (Childerico) The up and coming Swiss Baroque ensemble I Barocchisti brings us a seldom-heard drama by Handel, sung by a top-notch cast, from Lausanne's beautiful Salle Metropole.

Bluegrass Breakdown Returns to GPB Radio

instrument unpicked, no song unsung, and no interview undone in our continuing effort to so. So don’t miss Bluegrass Breakdown, Saturday nights at 11, following Music Americana, on the GPB Radio network.

Fans of bluegrass music can rejoice over the return of Bluegrass Breakdown to GPB Radio on Saturday nights. Produced by Nashville Public Radio, the program now airs Saturday nights at 11 PM. Here’s the host of the program explaining what you can expect:

GPB Radio Reporters Receive Awards for Outstanding Work GPB is boosting its award-winning reputation for reporting with several new honors in the past few months. John Sepulvedo’s story “Chemicals in the Conasauga” won in the category of Best Investigative Reporting at the Georgia Associated Press Awards. Sepulvedo also received an honorable mention for the Best Web Feature for “The Secret Cemetery.” Orlando Montoya received an honorable mention for the Best Series Reporting on “Bad News in News” ; and Edgar Treiguts received a honorable mention for the Best Sports Feature on “Larry Munson Retires.” Treiguts also received the Los Angeles Press Club National Entertainment Journalism Award for Best Feature Reporting for his piece on Sparrow Quartet founder Abigail Washburn, in which he interviews her about the group’s unique fusion of bluegrass music with Chinese culture.

I’m Dave Higgs, host of Bluegrass Breakdown. We’ve put together an emotionally-charged, heart-rending, paint-peeling, splinter-kicking one hour bluegrass show. Thematically, we’re all over the bluegrassical map, boldly covering such hot topics as broken things in Bluegrassland, gospel train songs, and “ain’t” tunes. We also make frequent trips to the seldom seen new bluegrass CD bins, where the latest discs in bluegrassdom are examined. And, of course, being based in Nashville, we feature scintillating conversation and live music with some of the best in bluegrass. Recent guests have included The McLains, Lynn Morris & Marshall Wilborn, Crucial Smith, Tim O’Brien & Dirk Powell, and the Larry Stephenson Band.

In his previous seven specials (including The Power of Intention, 10 Secrets To Success And Inner Peace and Inspiration: Your Ultimate Calling), best-selling author Dr. Wayne Dyer introduced public television audiences to powerful new ways of thinking. Now, in Dr. Wayne Dyer: Excuses Begone!, Dyer’s goal is simple, though not easy: to help viewers learn how to overcome lifetime thinking habits that keep them from maximizing their human potential. Excuses Begone! addresses the powerfully transformative process of changing habituated ways of thinking that limit beliefs in who we can be and what we can achieve. Through Dyer’s process of identifying the most common selfdefeating excuses, he teaches that we have the ability to choose our way of thinking. “This is a program about choosing, not excusing,” he explains. He informs viewers that just because something has “always seemed to be the way it is,” there is a wealth of research that now points to a human being’s ability to change these habits — excuses — and move into new realms of behavior that are no longer self-limiting.
