Dear Friends,

Welcome to the last issue of experience in this format. Next month, you’ll receive an easy to access newsletter right in your email box called Your GPB. As a valued member of GPB Media, you will receive your newsletter several days in advance of our regular newsletter subscribers, giving you the first opportunity to take advantage of our special events, programming updates and behind the scenes look at good things to come! Beginning in January, you can also download a printable version of our television and radio schedule, so please make sure that we have your current email address. As we head into 2010 and the start of our 50th year here in Georgia, I’d first like to reflect on what an amazing year 2009 has been! GPB is the largest media company in Georgia, and when I joined this organization, I learned that it was also the busiest media company in Georgia! GPB began 2009 with comprehensive team coverage of the Georgia legislative session with Lawmakers on radio, television and the web. January also marked an exciting initiative on radio with StoryCorps. GPB hosted the StoryCorp’s traveling windstream trailer in historic Savannah, Georgia, reaching out to town residents as well as unique voices from the Gullah Geechee and coastal communities. Back in Atlanta, we began our work in advance of the premeire of filmmaker Ken Burns’s newest film, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. GPB pulled together a wide coalition of people whose stories were featured in the Burns film: African Americans, Native Americans and Asian Americans. We worked with a similar coalition in February to inform viewers about digital conversion. GPB partnered with the Leadership Coalition on Civil Rights to help educate and inform all Georgians about this important change to their delivery of over the air television. GPB partners to bring Georgians the incredible performance series each year from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and this year we invited the top performers with the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra to GPB to record their

experience

March found GPB on the road to Columbus, GA, where we hosted the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and celebrated pianist, Joyce Yang, preceded by a VIP reception for GPB Members. In Atlanta, we hosted noted Native American director Chris Eyre for an event focusing on the “Trail Of Tears” episode in the We Shall Remain series from PBS’s American Experience. GPB reached out to the Cherokee community and filled the house for this important screening and panel discussion. April was busy with a visit from PBS Newshour’s Gwen Ifill. That same month, GPB premiered an original film tackling the issue of child abuse, The Road Beyond Abuse, narrated by Jane Fonda. May marked a busy and exciting time for GPB. Ken Burns and National Park Ranger Sheldon Johnson introduced scenes from Burns’ new film, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea and attended a private reception for GPB members. In June, our education team partnered with Communities in Schools and hosted the screening of the film The Soloist. Kids from area non-traditional schools participated in a talent show at GPB. In June, we launched a new inititiative with our partner Aetna to raise awareness about childhood obesity. We produced an original program, Georgia Weighs In: A Childhood Obesity Special. Broadcast live on television statewide, and streamed live, the program reached out to all Georgians. Experts recruited through the Georgia Department of Community Health took viewer phone calls and participated in an online chat to provide resources. In addition, the initiative has also included visits to Savannah, Augusta, Macon and Atlanta with our spokesperson for this effort, Doc Neil the Banana Peel, (a.ka. Dr. Neil Shulman, M.D.) who takes his message of happy health to kids in witty and interactive performances. GPB also aired a 5-part radio series

Georgia Traveler, as they took the road in a special Halloween episode to tour haunted homes in Savannah and Americus, GA.

In this changing economy, GPB has been there with information and assistance. Job Fair 2009 was multi-platform event providing information and resources about employment to Georgians and resulted in hundreds of calls and outreach. Similarly, in July, GPB partnered with the Consumer Credit Counseling Service on another multi-platform initiative, Facing The Mortgage Crisis, again answering a need in our communities for reputable information and resources when facing a mortgage crisis.

In November, GPB hosted a member party with Curious Georgia at Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta. Next, GPB headed to the Savannah Book Festival with Doc Neil and PBS Kids host Miss Rosa in a joint effort to promote Happy Healthy Kids and GPB resources for educators.

Back to school spelled more great work with GPB in education. Georgia State School Superintendent Cathy Cox announced a new initiative in partnership with GPB that will provide professional development opportunities to state educators through PBS Teacherline. September also inspired us to go Jurassic over the new Jim Henson show, Dinosaur Train. GPB created a week of dinosaur programming around the launch, including episodes of Nature and NOVA, and an original GPB production, Georgiasaurs. To launch the special week of programming, GPB hosted a family fun event, “Doughnuts and Dinosaurs,” complete with a visit from Buddy the T-Rex from Dinosaur Train. That same week, Discovery Education came and trained hundreds of Georgia teachers on digital media content, and treated area educators to a discussion with ocean life documentarian Philippe Cousteau. Going back to school, also means enjoying the excitement of high school sports. This year, GPB brought back its highly popular Football Fridays in Georgia, a web initiative that allows people to view games, share photos, participate in chats and enjoy all the behind-the-scenes action of the games. October ushered in gorgeous fall leaves and the return of season three for

Speaking of kids, We had a lot of good news for kids and families in 2009! GPB launched a new series of short original programs called Slangman’s World, that teaches kids about world languages and culture through music, magic and fun. Kids were also entertained by a new series of Doc Neil the Banana Peel episodes focusing on healthy eating habits and exercise. Also look for Laughing Pizza, a wonderful series of fun-filled songs with positive messages for kids, and check out our newest addition for kids, Professor Ridley, a fun loving Paleontologist with dinosaur games! Check out the games at gpbkids.org and come back in January when we introduce our new GPB Kids page, where you can enter to win free ice cream just for signing up for the birthday club! Now we’re headed for the holidays and busy planning another wonderful year of programming for you. Thank you for all you have done for GPB this year: you make all that we do possible. You are our producers and our program directors, not just our members, but our muses. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support of GPB Media – we look forward to bringing you more relevant and engaging programs in our 50th year, 2010! Best,
