I founded Leaders Are Making A Difference – Leaders are MAD for short because I am passionate about inspiring and enabling people in business to become real Leaders. What I mean by a real Leader is someone who is driven to make a significant difference for their organisations and themselves and not just protect their status and salary.
I went to a breakfast networking meeting and a Herbalife member stood up and asked “what did you have for your breakfast today?” I had just had coffee, no food. The next question was the killer. “How’s that working for you?” Clearly it wasn’t working for me at all.
I have an extensive background in Executive Director and Senior Manager roles across diverse industries and in many major brand names. I have learned from some amazing business leaders and some awful ones over the past 30 years. I use this experience and the knowledge and skills gained through a variety of coaching qualifications and a Master’s degree in Business to inspire and enable performance improvement in others.
It took over a year for me to try the products – I’m very stubborn !! But then, within days I felt better. I had more energy, I stopped craving sugar, I just felt better. Within 6 months I lost 30lbs and I was feeling amazing. I looked better, I felt better, I lost weight ( and kept it off ) my confidence returned, I started eating properly, discovered a love of Body Combat and Hiking, I slept better and my depression lifted.
I love meeting new people and working with new businesses identifying how I can help them achieve their potential. I also love the variety of work I do and I would love to attract some local clients here in Teesside. I was born and educated here but left for my career. Having returned 8 years ago I have a goal for 2017 to connect with local business leaders and make a difference here.
At that point I decided what I wanted to do with my life. I want to help people to feel better and be healthier. I now help people go from bad to better and it’s so much more than weight loss. I know because I’ve been there and come out on the other side. So if I ask you “what did you have for breakfast today?” and “How is that working for you?” it’s because I care. I want everyone to feel as amazing as I do and I’m so grateful that Herbalife is enabling me to live a life I love, helping people to lose weight and live a healthy active lifestyle.
Of course it is not all work and no play. I also love the flexibility of working for myself. I like to maintain my own resilience with a mixture of Pilates, spinning classes and lots of walking and most days I have the opportunity to do at least one. The flexibility also provides me with lots of opportunities to pop up to Newcastle to see my daughter as well as voluntarily supporting the Board of a Counselling provider based in Gateshead. And anyone that knows me will tell you that I make the most of my self-employed status by taking lots of holidays. One of my favourite being a health and fitness retreat in Portugal, I’ve always got one of those planned if not two!

Coming into Spring and JD Training has had a very busy successful year already quite a few talking points along the way. Our portfolio is ever increasing but we constantly try to improve on our existing courses. We are especially proud of our induction training into health and social care. At JD we believe that the foundation of the induction is to ensure our learners are given the tools and confidence to provide excellent personal care with privacy and dignity. Our courses are educational and practical with the use of our body suit, sensory impairment glasses and interactive tasks such as feeding etc. This enables the learners to experience the challenges service users face each day. The learners leave our centre with understanding and knowledge required to fulfil their role in health and social care successfully.

As Gossip enters its 4th year with bold ambitions of things to come, I feel now is the perfect time to introduce myself. Explaining how I've got to where I am today, the story of my life and those close to me, and my plans of what's to come for not only the magazine but something much more important and personal JPC Community Farm. The farm project is not just for my personal family but for all those who have someone with special needs.
When my daughter was only 7 years old my son was born as they say 'normal' but issues occurred and he ended up in an incubator fighting for his life – and he has never stopped fighting since then.
I've always managed home life with my own career, starting in retail and quickly gaining management skills by working in Retail. It wasn't long before I found myself moving into a different direction, marketing where I found my skills best suited and spent the majority of my career.
The proud wife of Paul Connaughton, a former Police Officer, and the proud mother of two beautiful children Abigail, 23, who has graduated University and now has a career of her own at a digital marketing agency in London and my wonderful son James, 16, who has Hypertonia Cerebral Palsy but has never let his disabilities stop him from being a bubbly loving fun person with a huge personality whose smile makes everyone he meets hearts melt I believe I have one of the highest skills an education can't buy – being a mum to a child with special needs. A skill shared with many others who strive to be the best they can be for their child.
Paul, Abigail and I did everything we could to learn how to best care for James and now he can help with feeding, undress, and shower himself, things he was never going to able to do.
I quickly worked my way up from Marketing Manager for Land Rover to Regional Marketing Manager; I held this position working for Hyundai, Lexus, the Department of Health, Tesco, Then Land Rover South East - Being away from home was getting too much for my son and me so I decided to make another change in my career
It changed my world when a specialist told me my son would never walk or talk and in his own words; “no magic pill or injection will change that.” Words I'll never forget that forged an unfathomable determination in me to prove him wrong and I’ve spent the last 16 years doing so with the love and support from my immediate family and close friends
The role saw me work as project manager, control marketing plans and budgets, conduct market research to understand communities across the UK, event management and more – the role required drive,

excellent communication, initiative and the utmost professionalism. The broad range of experience I earned shaped me into who I am today. In 2014 my daughter Abigail wanted to pursue a career in marketing and alongside her studies, we planned to work together, a new challenge and experience for us both, by launching Gossip. A local, glossy lifestyle and fashion magazine. It was an opportunity for local businesses to advertise and for us to highlight local fashion, talent and more. I am proud to say 4 years later Gossip has grown to what you see today with a range of features on food, fashion and more as well as letting a large number of local businesses reach 14,000 ABC1 homes as well as hosting a number of incredibly successful charity balls. However, upon reaching 50 and my son turning 16 I had to stop and reevaluate the future. After seeing BBC's Panorama investigate care homes, it really opened Paul's and my eyes that the standard of care offered can often be totally unacceptable for our son and we had to wonder what the future held when we weren't around for him – a sentiment we found we shared with many other parents of special needs adults and children. We decided who better to secure his future, and the future of others, by establishing our own independent supported living accommodation with a separate respite facility for James and others like him. Hence, the idea of the JPC Community Farm was born. After just over 15 months into this project, and after an incredible amount of hard work from ourselves and many others who we are eternally grateful for their
support we are well on our way, but the work is far from done. The James Paul Connaughton Community Farm has secured a property in Tame Bridge near Stokesley set within 27 acres of North Yorkshire countryside which offers a great deal of privacy but also easy access to main roads as well as plenty of space for enriching activities.

I will be hosting a number of charity balls, the next is the Great Gatsby Ball on March 24th, A white collar boxing event on 7th April alongside a number of fundraising events and Paul is completing an incredible Half-Iron Man Challenge on 15th July by swimming 1.2 Miles with James in a dinghy, biking 56 Miles with James on the bike and then running 13.1 Miles with James in a specially adapted wheelchair. We want to offer residents an indoor and outdoor play area, trampoline/ rebound therapy, and an equestrian arena for riding for the disabled, horticultural therapy garden, café, day care, animal petting farm, hydrotherapy pool the list is endless however we are prioritising what is most needed first. The Farm has a way to go yet, but as a family, we’ve never been more determined to succeed in something and we have countless numbers

The Orange Pip's aim was to not settle – every trader was to be amazing with no filler and it succeeded in its curation giving synergy to arts, food and business which is an apt description of the host streets.

Starting with 20 stalls the market has continually grown and expanded across both streets, animating the space to become an exceedingly vibrant and hospitable atmosphere. It has attracted businesses such as Fat Hippo that traditionally stay away from markets because of the identity and community it has cultivated. Catering to a range of needs the street became a destination. “That was the goal,” said Michelle. “To make a real destination within Middlesbrough. We wanted to improve the offer of the town. The opportunity to do that and make independent sector improvements was great. The response we've had is phenomenal, everyone has bought into the vision. “After the success of Baker Street we set out on Phase Two which was redeveloping Bedford Street. With it being adjacent and largely similar to the old Baker Street it was the perfect opportunity to expand on what we made. With a slight difference we wanted Bedford Street to have a focus on food, a high quality and independent foodie street.”
Nicky said “We wanted to change perceptions. The goal was to put Middlesbrough back on the map by building on the culture and audience that already exists. Offering everything at a world class standard we asked ourselves why limit our ambitions? We planned for this to succeed and are so proud to see it surpass our expectations.”
A monthly event, The Orange Pip market returns 25th March and will be the last Saturday of every month thereafter.

Glenn McCrory Interview by James Stevenson
We met the North East’s only ever World Champion at the signing of his autobiography ‘Carrying David’, organised by Apollo Events. The titular David was Glenn’s adopted brother who suffered from a muscle wasting disease, given until the age of 15 to live he defied all odds to live until 29 and inspired everyone he met not least Glenn to become World Champion. Coming from humble beginnings in a family of seven there wasn’t much hope for future prospects when he was a child. Mines were closing and post-industrial depression was set to take hold of the North East but the fighter in him took over. “Boxing was always in the family, always gloves in the house. My granddad was a forces champion in India and my grand uncle held a European title so I was born into it really. My dad and brothers got me into it. Glenn had a natural talent and became a star at amateur level – winning 56 of 64 fights including winning an ABA title and representing Great Britain and Ireland in New York. “After seeing Muhammad Ali knock-out George Foreman I knew that’s who I wanted to be. I had to pack in the other sports and gave myself entirely to boxing. I was a bit wild as a kid too so it kind of kept me in check.” McCrory soon followed his idol and became a Professional in February 1984 at just 19-years-old and standing 6’4” he knocked out opponent Barry Ellis in the first round – the boldest of debuts and a sign of things to come. McCrory went on to win another 12 fights across the next 15 months but then came his first loss as he was knocked out by John Westgarth. Things quickly went wrong for McCrory as he was quickly thrown into fight after fight and he lost four of his next five fights and at 22-yearsold feared that was it for his career.

“I shouldn’t have been fighting at heavyweight, and I didn’t have a proper trainer or nutritionist
back then. I had a manager I couldn’t trust and it seemed to go off the rails for me. I went back home, got back in the gym and focused on what I wanted to do. I wasn’t going to let my dream die.” Back in the ring and raring to go McCrory refocused and at Light Heavyweight won his next 11 bouts with ruthless efficiency and his ascent to the pinnacle of boxing was confirmed when he was offered the opportunity to fight Patrick Lumumba for the vacant IBF World Cruiserweight title. The fight took place in Stanley, County Durham and McCrory’s home support was evident and with his brother David by ringside there was nothing stopping him that night. By Unanimous decision The Gentleman Glenn McCrory was crowned World Champion. “All I ever dreamt of was the world title, and everyone told me I wouldn’t do it. Even my family, not to be cruel but to keep me grounded and my expectations low. But I did it. Despite all the adversity I did it. It felt like climbing Everest, to be at the peak and the only way was down.” After defending the title once he lost the belt to American Jeff Lampkin. McCrory tried his hand at heavyweight again fighting a young Lennox Lewis for British and European heavyweight titles and later challenging again for IBF World Cruiserweight title but Glenn decided to call it a day on his professional career but opened the door for his long career in commentary and punditry.

“It wouldn’t have been fair to train someone and not fully dedicate myself to it but now I have the chance I’m ready for the challenge. After everything I went through I expect no less from my students. If they don’t give me everything I’ll let them go. I’m training an Irish lad Sean McGlinchey and he’s looking great for his professional debut April 22nd .” The 2014 Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist has just completed his first spell of training with McCrory and has a bright future ahead. Glenn’s new book ‘Carrying David’ tells the story of his career, but for him more importantly it tells the story of his brother David.
