IN THE SAFEST OF HANDS Grangetown Community Fire Station went all out to teach young adults the importance of fire safety. The team at JPC Care and Support surprised its day service clients by allowing them to step into the boots of firefighters for the morning to learn the importance and dangers of fire. The crew at Grangetown Community Fire Station spent time demonstrating what an average day in the life of a firefighter looks like. The group got to test out the powerful hoses and hear the fire engines all revved up. For a full immersive experience they got to try on the uniform to feel the weight of it, how heavy the jackets are on your back. The fire station staff got involved too, and it was a thumbs up for all those attending, plus smiles on faces when the last leg of the training was to get to sit in the fire engines and take it for a spin. Jewellery has had different uses and intentions throughout history, it has been more than just a fashion statement, a wedding token or beloved gift; the item often had a special intention or meaning to it. Ancient Egypt The ancient Egyptians favoured gold because they believed it to be sacred and possessed spiritual powers, linked to their Sun God Ra, who’s most commonly attributed power is that of life or creation, including the creation of Earth, Heaven, the Underworld. Often pharaohs and wealthy members of society had gold items present when buried as they believed it would please Ra and they would be allowed to enter heaven. Gold jewellery allowed the wearer to carry something sacred with them at all times to honour Ra. The Celts The Celts jewellery of choice was a collar style necklace called a torc.Those who were leaders in the community, royalty, the wealthy, and possibly high-ranking military would wear these pieces of jewellery to show rank within the clan and was believed to provide mystical protection in battle. Medieval Royalty Jewellery remained highly spiritual and political for a very long time, however by 1200AD in medieval Europe jewellery was being worn mostly for fashion purposes but with the goal of showing wealth and status. Royalty and the nobility wore gold, silver and precious gems, often gifted as political pawns to show alliances or to boast the wealth and power of a nation. Renaissance Fashion Renaissance jewellery was more personalised and artistic, people could wear religious jewellery to use in their daily worship, or they could wear items that reflected their interests, such as pieces adorned with mythological figures. Some spirituality still remains, a scorpion design was commonly used to protect the wearer from illness. Advances in Technology By the 17th century expanding global trade made gemstones ever more available. Advances in cutting techniques increased the sparkle of gemstones in candlelight. However the biggest advancement was the development of the brilliant-cut with its multiple facets.

Diamonds sparkled as never before and came to dominate jewellery design. Mass Production The 19th century saw a new era of jewellery making, mass factory produced, cheaper to make items became popular, giving more people the chance to own beautiful jewellery. However some Victorians saw this as a threat to the art of jewellery making, fearing that the skill would be lost a resurgence of handmade jewellery also occurred. This balance between high end unique items and affordable mass produced pieces has carried on to this day.

Get to know your beans; there’s a lot more to your morning coffee than meets they eye. Coffee bushes need tropical climates with adequate rainfall to thrive, the majority of global output comes from just the top five producers: Brazil,Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, and Ethiopia. Coffee bushes can take up to four years before they bear fruit, called cherries. Once they go from green to vibrant red they are ready for harvest. Larger farms will use machines but some smaller artisan growers will pick by hand to check each and every cherry. The cherries are then washed, skinned, fermented, dried and the outer layer is removed. At this stage the cherries are still vibrant red. The cherries are roasted by being heated to over 200 degrees Celsius, it is this process which gives distinct flavours and characteristics. Then the coffee is distributed and

sold either still as whole beans or ground powder ready to be brewed and made into your coffee of choice. You may have heard the terms Arabica or Robusta, but what does it mean? These are the types of coffee bean used to make your cuppa. The main coffee types are Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica; all of them have radically different taste profiles. Arabica is the most popular, it’s full of favour and aroma, often used for a standard americano. Robusta is rich and has almost a chocolate flavour to it, ideal for an iced coffee.
