What made you choose the location?
TEN BEAUTIFUL YEARS
It’s a prime location as it’s near to the car park and is easy to get to by many different bus routes. It was a perfect location for growth as the salon had plenty of space for us to expand our services. What qualities were important to you when launching Bel Viso Beauty? I wanted everyone felt welcome and comfortable. A lot of people say how they feel anxious or uncomfortable in salons if they don’t fit “their look” so I wanted everyone from all walks of life to feel like it was their place to feel relaxed and get pampered. It’s a safe space it’s warm and welcoming, where friendships are formed between staff and clients. Any fond memories over the years? Winning multiple awards from Best Beauty Salon to Best Beauty Therapist, meeting all the amazing clients who’ve walked through the doors, and the opportunities that have come over the years. Do you feel that the beauty industry has changed over the years?

How long have you been working in the beauty industry? I’ve worked in the industry for over 16 years. After leaving school at the age of 16 I started doing a Beauty Apprenticeship at Middlesbrough College. What sparked your ambition to open Bel Viso Beauty? I had gotten a taste for it after helping to run a salon in Darlington while the owner lived abroad, I decided it was then I would open my own salon. Now Bel Viso Beauty has been open over ten years thanks to my wonderful team of staff. fresh citrus and spicy notes, whereas Je Reviens has a more woody note with orange blossom and jasmine. Perhaps the most notable perfume of the 1930s was Joy by Jean Patou. Created in 1929 (the year of the Wall Street Crash) and even though it was marketed as ‘the world’s most expensive perfume’ it was a huge hit. Consisting of rose and ylang-ylang blossom, combined with juicy pear and sandalwood. All of these 1930’s perfumes are still available today. 1940’s Lighter and fresher perfumes became more popular, one of which was Miss Dior by Christian Dior, launched in 1947. However be warned - this perfume has had a revamp, the original fragrance is a yellow tone, whereas the newer version is a pink liquid. The original is floral wth a heart of jasmine and Grasse rose absolute, while patchouli adds depth. Both versions are available today.
Fragrant Christmas gifts through the decades Perfume has always been a staple gift, but the bottle of choice has changed over time. Here’s what gifts women may have opened on Christmas morning through the decades. 1920’s Launched in 1921, Chanel No. 5 was an immediate success, even though perfume was very much the preserve of the rich at this time. Famously worn by Marilyn Monroe, it has top notes of aldehydes, ylang-ylang, neroli, bergamot and lemon, with a vanilla base.
1950’s Femme de Rochas was a rich, sultry perfume aimed at the femme fatale, created in 1944 but it achieved greater popularity in the 50’s. It has a harmony of plum, wood, and musk. It can still be purchased today. Max Factor’s Primitif was a popular and affordable perfume for the masses compared to the fragrances by the big fashion houses. Top notes were bergamot and peach. Unfortunately it was discontinued.
Guerlain’s Shalimar launched in 1925. It is one of the most popular fragrances of all time and was supposedly inspired by Mumtaz Mahal, the women for whom the Taj Mahal was built. It is a rich vanilla, iris and bergamot blend. Both 20’s fragrances are just as popular 100 years later. 1930’s Tabu by Dana and Je Reviens by House of Worth were both launched in 1932. The science of long lasting makeup Do you often find that your mascara transfers, even when it’s a waterproof formula? It could be your eye cream or face moisturiser to blame, the oils break down even the most tough waterproof formula. Opt for a gel based eye cream and avoid putting your moisturiser too close to your eyes.
To ensure that your lipstick is long lasting, it is key to exfoliate your lips to ensure that the pigment has a smooth base to cling on to. Flakes of dry skin will allow the colour to simply shed off. Be primed and ready to go!
Foundation that slides off, despite being labelled as long lasting, could be due to the base you're using. We all know that oil and water don't mix. Check that your primer and foundation are made of the same core ingredient to ensure that it doesn’t separate. Simply check to see if aqua or oil is listed as the main ingredient. Applying lip gloss over lipstick can be beautiful, but it often causes the lipstick underneath to disintegrate as the oils in the gloss act as a makeup remover, breaking down the pigment. If you want the glossy look, opt for a tinted gloss or even a moisturising lipstick instead.

Tell us about your journey to opening San Seb Coffee. I was visiting San Sebastian in Spain and was inspired by how their food scene prioritised local ingredients and produce. That’s the reason why I purely use items sourced from small businesses in the area; including my organic milk, blondies, coffee, pies, scotch eggs and doughnuts.

Held at the iconic Old Billingsgate Victorian Market building in London, it was hosted by comedian, presenter and narrator Mark Dolan.
