Skopje – City of Constant Change Visiting Skopje, capital and the biggest city in Macedonia, is like being at two different places at once – In Europe and in Asia. In this ethnically diverse city you can see both orthodox churches side by side with mosques, historical and old buildings are next to modern glass and concrete centers. Skopje is situated on Vardar River. Medieval

Stone Bridge, which is one of the symbols of the city (also appears on its Coat of arms) connects the historic quarter with the contemporary district. Old Town – picturesque Stara Čaršija, was originally built in Turkish style. After crossing the bridge you get to St. Dimitri church. Right next to it you can visit Daut Pasha Turkish bath – once the largest public baths in Balkans, which together with Cifte Hammam, now serve as galleries. Except fine arts exhibited inside, the interior itself is worth seeing (the original tiling and ancient system of hot water distribution), which shows how Turkish baths were working. Another major tourist attraction of this part of the town is large Kala fortress built in 11th century. At the main square – Ploštad Makedonija, on the other bank of the river, one can see a wonderful fountain with the statue of Alexander of Macedon. The most famous person born in this city is Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Theresa. Museum built on the property where she was born features a small version of her house as well as personal artifacts from her life. In 1963 Skopje was hit by a strong earthquake. Several other countries were assisting in rebuilding efforts. Today Skopje is a city with modern infrastructure and serves as an important business and cultural hub of the country with numerous institutions, offices, factories, museums, galleries and art facilities. Its modernization is visible almost everywhere. New modern suburbs and shopping centers are being developed. Tourists can watch the ever-changing city of Skopje from the aerial view, if they climb a nearby mountain of Vodno (elevation 1,066 m). It features large iron cross, which is 66 meters high. You can reach the peak be foot or by modern cable cabin. While strolling down the streets of Skopje, you will find numerous restaurants offering variety of local specialties. Some of them are “pljeskavica”, which is a spicy patty made of ground meat, skara – grilled meat, Balkan burek, telesk or ribja čorba (veal or fish soup). Strong Balkan coffee has a very distinct taste and the same goes for grape liqueurs called rakija or mastika. In souvenir or antique shops you will definitely buy some souvenir that will remind you your visit to this city. foto: Fotky-Foto, Jacqueline Schmid
