Creating Sophisticated Interiors with Warmth & Balance
“Designing a home is about more than how it looks—it’s about how it feels. Even the quietest colour moments, when chosen with intention, can become the most beloved parts of your space.”
Jessica Cinnamon Principal Designer & Founder of Jessica Cinnamon Design Inc. jessicacinnamondesign.com
As mid-summer brings its golden glow into our homes, we find ourselves at the perfect crossroads between seasonal vibrance and interior tranquility. It’s the ideal time to embrace thoughtful design that feels fresh, layered, and enduring.
Whether you’re refreshing a single room or planning a full renovation, this season offers a unique opportunity to lean into the balance of colour and texture, light and shadow, and modernity with timelessness. Understanding how light moves through a space is essential when choosing the right palette. It’s one of the first things I consider in any design. North-facing rooms, for example, receive cooler, more diffused light throughout the day.
These spaces can often feel shadowy or flat if not approached with intention. I like to introduce warmth here through softer whites and warm neutrals, think gentle taupe, creamy ivory, and muted terracotta. These tones counterbalance the coolness of the light and lend a rounded sense of elegance. West-facing rooms, which come alive in the late afternoon and evening, are a wonderful place to experiment with richer, more saturated hues. This golden- hour light enhances bolder colours that might feel overwhelming in other areas of the home. Deep greens, warm ochres, and moody blues are especially effective here, absorbing the sunlight and revealing layered dimension as the day transitions into night.
If bold colour feels intimidating, there’s no need to commit all at once. One of my go-to strategies is layering subtle tonal shifts to add interest without overwhelming the senses. Muted shades like dusty rose, soft sage, and teal blue are beautiful entry points for those hesitant about colour. When applied through textiles, painted millwork, or artwork, these hues offer a sophisticated, understated impact.
A Simple Pro Tip:
Always test your paint on all four walls and observe how it changes throughout the day. What reads as soft in the morning can become far more saturated by evening, particularly in rooms with directional light. These nuances are essential to achieving a cohesive and balanced palette. Equally important are the finishes and materials you choose. This season, I’m particularly inspired by the interplay of matte and polished surfaces, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. In kitchen and bathrooms, even a small touch of colour in the hardware can transform the space. One collection I’m currently specifying for clients is the MOND faucet collection by VOGT. What makes the collection especially exciting right now
is its bold range of colours, from soft neutrals to expressive tones like pink and orange. These unexpected options are a playful way to inject personality into a quiet space. Whether used as a bold focal point or a subtle accent, coloured fixtures add individuality and depth without sacrificing elegance.
Saturation - the intensity of a colour is another element that deserves careful thought. High-saturation tones are perfect for accent moments, such as a powder room ceiling or a dining room designed for evening use. These colours help set a mood and create intimacy. For shared or open spaces, I often recommend more desaturated tones to encourage a sense of calm and cohesion. Chalky greys, soft earth tones, and mineral-inspired hues are gentle on the eye yet visually rich.
Trending:
A standout trend this season is the embrace of organic colour tones, with green emerging as a clear favourite. From olive and moss to sage and eucalyptus, these nature-driven hues bring a sense of tranquility and a connection to the outdoors. They pair beautifully with natural woods, textured stone, and woven elements, making them versatile and deeply grounding across different interior styles.
A good rule of thumb is to balance saturated and desaturated tones so that no single element overwhelms. Start with a neutral foundation, then introduce more expressive colours through artwork, upholstery, or cabinetry. This approach offers flexibility and longevity, allowing your home to evolve with your taste over time.
Ultimately, designing a home is about creating an experience. It’s not only about how a room looks, but how it feels. A space should reflect your personality while offering beauty, comfort, and inspiration. This summer, let natural light inform your palette, choose materials that invite touch, and don’t be afraid to explore quiet colour. Often, the most understated choices are the ones that leave the most lasting impression.
With intention and a bit of curiosity, even the most subtle colour moments can become the most beloved parts of your home.

Born to be Artists!
Let’s cast a spotlight on four phenomenal fine artists who share one important trait: each of these dynamic, creative souls knew they were artists long before the world could tell them otherwise.
Paula White-Diamond is a true legend in the local art world. She has been an artist her entire life and built a lasting career not only as a creator but also as a respected gallery owner in the Waterloo Region. Her current body of work is inspired by her curiosity when driving past houses, catching glimpses through windows, and wondering what life might look like inside. This architectural series gives us an abstracted peek into those imagined stories. Paula’s work ranges from surreal landscapes to bold florals, and now to this newest evolution of vibrant, fragmented abstracts full of colour and form.
Her gallery brand has recently merged with KULTIQ, and the new space at 48 Ontario St. N, Unit 101 in Kitchener is nothing short of stunning. Set in a beautifully restored building with soaring ceilings and exposed brick, the space is home to fine art and designer men’s fashion. The true spirit of the PWD Gallery lives on, offering visitors a deeper connection to art and design. You can even book a visit through their website.
Featured at the new KULTIQ–PWD Gallery space are Sherry Czekus and Stephanie Fehrenbach, both of whom, like all the artists featured here, were artists before they knew anything else.
Sherry Czekus has been successfully selling her work through PWD for many years. Her paintings are marked by her signature colour palette, brilliant use of white and off-white, and unique perspectives. In her latest work, her figures sometimes fade into their surroundings, pulling towards abstraction, sometimes it is just a space
Helen Fidler helensdesign.ca
where the figures can inhabit. Her pieces offer a unique bird’s-eye and other views of the people’s stories, allowing you to fill in the blanks.
Stephanie Fehrenbach was drawing before she could even read. Like many creative people, she followed a more traditional path for a time. But after university and marriage, she was drawn back to her creative roots. This time, she dove in without constraints, allowing her paintings to get a little wild. She began scooping thick oil paint onto the canvas in a sculptural way. Of her new style, she says, “It just lit my imagination on fire! It’s more intuitive—using colour and shape with the weightlessness of negative space.” You can feel that passion when you stand in front of her vibrant florals full of bold texture. They practically pull you in.
Finally, in the picturesque village of Elora, Kreso Cavlovic welcomes visitors to Gallery Vernissage. Kreso has spent over 40 years as a professional artist, with his paintings exhibited everywhere from Hong Kong to Holland, Croatia to Mexico. His work draws from everyday life— each moment a new source of inspiration. Sixteen years ago, he opened his studio gallery in Elora, where the public can come and purchase his pieces, and if they are lucky enough, they can watch him paint. One of his most beloved motifs is the dove. His trio of doves represents heavenly spirits and symbolizes family.
So, if you’re in the market for a vibrant, beautiful, and original painting, skip the mass-produced prints from big-box stores. With a slightly larger investment, you can own a meaningful piece from one of these gifted artists. Art has always been their world, and their work deserves a place in yours.
Shade MEETS Solar:
SMARTER BACKYARDS FOR CANADIAN SUMMERS
Damon Bennett, @officaldamonbennett
As sunny days stretch across Ontario, homeowners are reimagining their backyards with comfort, sustainability, and energy savings in mind. Combining shade structures with solar integration is a powerful way to create inviting outdoor spaces that work with the sun—not against it.
Why Shade and Solar Work Together?
2025 ONTARIO REBATE PROGRAMS
Strategically placed shade elements like pergolas, gazebos, or retractable awnings offer much-needed comfort during peak summer heat while reducing solar gain on your home—helping to lower cooling costs. When these structures include solar panels, they also generate clean electricity.
Solar pergolas, patio covers, and carports are becoming increasingly popular in Ontario as homeowners look for innovative ways to harness the sun’s power while creating functional, beautiful backyard retreats. They are most effective on south- and west-facing areas where sunlight is strongest during summer.
Smart landscaping complements this strategy too. Deciduous trees planted to the south and west provide shade in summer and allow sunlight in winter. Vertical gardens, trellises, and climbing plants can block harsh rays and reduce reflected heat.
In a province known for both sizzling summers and frigid winters, designing a backyard that responds to the seasons is a smart investment in comfort, style, and long-term efficiency.
Home Renovation Savings Program (Ontario)
Launched in January, this province-wide program offers rebates of up to 30% on energy-efficient upgrades—including rooftop solar, battery storage, insulation, heat pumps, and smart thermostats. Includes a $600 rebate for energy assessments.

Canada Greener Homes Loan & Grant
Offers up to $5,600 in grants and interest-free loans up to $40,000 for solar panels, battery storage, insulation, and other retrofits. Requires a certified home energy evaluation.
Learn more: natural-resources.canada.ca
Home Energy Saver Program (via Save on Energy)
Available to eligible Ontario homeowners, including those in Waterloo Region, this rebate provides up to $5,000 for airsource heat pumps, $10,000 for ground-source heat pumps, and $75 for smart thermostats.

RENOVATIONSummer Staycation
Summer months are a great time for outdoor renovations. This year we almost had no choice but to do our spring maintenance in the early summer months. We somehow seemed to have skipped spring (aside from a few very rainy weeks) and went from what felt like an extra-long winter straight into summer weather.
With the longer days it is the perfect time to get some overdue renovation projects done, but in particular exterior work around your home. Better yet, why not plan a staycation renovation! This allows you to direct all your time and energy into your project uninterrupted by work obligations. Also making the entire experience less stressful and more enjoyable. Hopefully you can complete your renovation with some time to just rest and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
NEW WINDOWS
BUILD A DECK OR PATIO AREA
For obvious reasons there is no better time than warm summer months to replace old windows with new energy efficient windows. Energy efficient windows are sure to save you money over the years. If new windows are required, why not upgrade to the new bold modern trend of black window frames. They have quickly become the most popular choice and are sure to enhance the exterior of your home and noticeably improve your curb appeal.
Take some time to build an extension of your home and add to your outdoor living space by having a designated space for a BBQ, dining or lounge area once you step outdoors. Whether you choose to do a wood or composite deck or lay some beautiful patio stones, you will not regret investing in this extra living space that not only enhances the value of your home but also allows you to bring the indoors out. Not to mentioned allowing you to spend some quality time during the precious summer weather with family and friends in the beautiful outdoors.
Darlene Lesic, dlesic.com
POOL
Make your dreams come true and stay cool through those extremely hot and humid summer days with a new pool. Pools are very customizable to fit in almost any backyard. Various shapes, depths and sizes make it easy to plan to your unique style, goals and desires. No doubt the summer is the time for this incredible addition to your backyard.
LANDSCAPING
IMPROVEMENTS
Maybe you have a tree that has blocked much of the summer sun and needs some major trimming, or need to remove dying bushes or downsizing overgrown plants? Summertime is the ideal time to get digging in the dirt and maybe extend your garden to include some more beautiful and vibrant perennials and lush greenery. Whether it’s a few tweaks or complete overhaul, the beauty of watching your garden flourish is good for the heart and soul. As an added bonus - most garden centres offer excellent pricing this time of year on all your landscaping needs.
Before After PAINTING
The exterior paint of your home can endure some damage from the harsh winter months, so obviously the summer is the best time to freshen up any paint work on columns, entry doors, garage doors, etc. For a major façade upgrade consider painting old brick to bring a whole new life to your home. This trend has been on the rise over the years and will continue to become increasingly popular particularly in aged homes.
PRESSURE WASHING AND SEALING
If you didn’t get to pressure washing your concrete, wood, siding and other surfaces in the spring, it is not too late to get this done in the summer months. Pressure washing will give you noticeable results, but I also highly recommend sealing your wood, patio stones and concrete as it protects and extends the life of your surface. Call Pro Pressure Washing for a free quote.
Staycation Renovations do not need to be limited to the outdoors – modernize your kitchen, create a spa like bathroom, upgrade your flooring and so on. Tackling these indoor projects in the summer months is also beneficial as you can escape the mess and head outdoors and enjoy some downtime and even still entertain guests’ mid renovation.
Take advantage of the warm weather and make these improvements that are sure to impress. And if any of these renovations are beyond your reach, reach out to us and we will help you with any home renovation project!
No Stain No Gain PRO TIPS FOR FLAWLESS WOOD STAINING THIS SUMMER
Looking to refresh your deck, porch, or fence this summer?
Staining your exterior wood surfaces not only enhances curb appeal but protects against Canada’s unpredictable weather. Even the best stain needs the right technique. Here are five top tips for success:
Prep Like a Pro
Don’t skip the prep—it’s key to long-lasting results. Make sure your surface is free of dirt, dust, mildew, and old residue. Use a wood cleaner or diluted bleach (1:3 ratio with water), scrub thoroughly, and rinse well.
Sand for Success
Let the wood dry for 2–3 sunny days, then sand with the right grit (80–120 for vertical, 60–80 for horizontal). To test readiness, sprinkle water—if it beads, sand more. If it soaks in within 2 minutes, you’re good to go.
Cover Every Angle
Where possible, stain all six sides of each plank— including end grains and cuts—to properly seal and allow the wood to breathe. This step helps prevent water absorption and damage down the road.
Learn
Apply in the Shade
Use a brush for best penetration and control. Rollers or sprayers can cause pooling. Always work in shaded areas and follow the sun to avoid direct heat while staining.
Re-Stain Every 2–3 Years
Regular upkeep is essential. Surfaces like decks may need more frequent staining due to wear and tear. Always prep properly before reapplying— staining over cracks or peels won’t solve the problem.
With these expert tips—and the help of Sico’s new Formula 77, a one-coat stain designed to deliver a flawless, professional finish even for beginners—your outdoor wood projects will be simpler, smarter, and ready for summer.

The Skincare Pyramid
WHAT TO PRIORITIZE (AND WHEN) FOR RADIANT RESULTS
Audrey Moir Owner, SPAudrey
Build Your Best Skin— One Level at a Time
In the world of aesthetics, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the latest serums, devices, and trending treatments. But radiant, healthy skin isn’t built overnight—it’s layered, just like a pyramid. Whether you’re new to skincare or already investing in clinical treatments, knowing what to prioritize—and when—can make all the difference. This guide breaks it down step-by-step, helping you build your skin routine from the ground up, just like the pros do.
Top Tier
Luxury Boosters
The Ultimate Glow-Up These aren’t essentials—but for those who want to go the extra mile, they make all the difference.
• PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for natural regeneration.
• LED light therapy for healing and anti-inflammatory support.
• Hydration infusions or under-eye filler for refreshed, radiant eyes.
Level 3
Advanced Aesthetic Treatments - Correct & Enhance
Now you’re ready to level up with clinical treatments that offer real transformation.
• Laser facials or IPL for pigmentation, redness, or collagen boost.
• Microneedling or skin boosters to refine texture and tone.
• Injectables (filler/Botox) if you’re looking to smooth, lift, or refresh.
Level 2
Targeted Treatments - Your Skin Goals, Addressed
Once the basics are covered, it’s time to personalize your plan.
• Serums like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or retinol for glow, firmness, or texture.
• Exfoliation (chemical or enzyme) to renew skin gently.
• Professional facials to reset and nourish the skin.
Level 1
The Foundation - Daily Essentials
Before diving into treatments or fancy products, a solid foundation is key.
• Cleanser: The right one keeps skin balanced, not stripped.
• Moisturizer: Locks in hydration, especially when applied to damp skin (like we covered in Fun Fact Friday!).
• SPF 30+ daily: No exceptions—even in winter or indoors.
SOAK UP THE FOR A HAPPIERSunYou
As summer unfolds, there’s no better time to step outside and soak up the sunshine. Beyond just giving us that warm, summery glow, the sun plays a crucial role in boosting our mood and improving our mental health. Exposure to sunlight increases our body’s production of serotonin, often dubbed the “happiness hormone,” which helps us feel more calm and focused. Additionally, sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, an essential nutrient that supports our immune system, bone health, and overall well-being.
Nature’s Magic: A Personal Touch
For me, there’s nothing quite like spending time outside, surrounded by my gardens, watching fireflies, or chasing the auroras. Being immersed in nature, feeling the sun on your skin, and breathing in the fresh air is such a simple yet powerful way to lift your spirits. Nature truly has a calming effect, offering a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and encouraging us to slow down and savour the moment.
Family Time Under the Sun
Setting down the tech for the day and getting outside with your family also offers a wonderful boost to mental health. It’s not just about the sunshine; it’s about the joy of being together, sharing experiences, and enjoying all the fruits that summer provides. Whether it’s a family picnic, a hike, or simply playing in the backyard, these moments of togetherness strengthen bonds and create lasting memories, all while promoting a sense of well-being.
So, as the sun shines bright this summer, step outside, soak up that vitamin D, and let nature, and the company of loved ones, work its magic on your mood and mental health!

Summer 2025’s Hottest Releases
ATMOSPHERE
by Taylor Jenkins Reid
From the queen of emotionally gutting fiction comes a nostalgic, high stakes story set during NASA’s 1980s Space Shuttle era. Joan Goodwin, a quiet astronomy professor, suddenly finds herself training to become one of the first female scientists in space. What follows is a journey filled with friendship, ambition, unexpected love, and one life-altering mission. It’s classic TJR: dramatic, heartfelt, and totally unputdownable.
MY FRIENDS
by Fredrik Backman
Fredrik Backman is back to wreck us… in the best way. Backman gives us a story about four teens whose summer friendship echoes across decades. When young artist Louisa becomes the unexpected keeper of a mysterious painting, she sets off on a cross-country journey to uncover the truth behind three tiny figures hidden in its corner. What she finds is a heart-tugging story of love, healing, and the kind of friendship that leaves a mark long after it ends. Equal parts funny, tender, and soul-nourishing—this one’s a hug in book form.
WITH A VENGEANCE
by Riley Sager
Imagine Knives Out meets Murder on the Orient Express with a fierce female lead. In 1954, Anna boards a luxury train with a plan to confront the six people who ruined her family, but when one of them turns up dead, things spiral fast. Now she must play detective to catch a killer, while protecting the very people she came to destroy. It’s twisty, dramatic, and will have you staying up way past your bedtime.
PROBLEMATIC SUMMER ROMANCE
by Ali Hazelwood
Ali Hazelwood gives us messy age-gap, brother’sbest-friend energy, set against the dreamy backdrop of Italy. Maya’s 23, broke, and obsessed with Conor, her older, wildly off-limits crush who also happens to want nothing to do with her (or so he claims). But when a wedding in Sicily traps them in a villa together for a week, all bets and personal boundaries… are off. It’s steamy, complicated, and the perfect chaotic summer escape.
If your beach bag isn’t bursting with books right now, are you even doing summer, right? Whether you’re sneaking in a few chapters during nap time, soaking up sun on the dock, or hiding from the heat with a fan and a cold iced coffee, this season’s hottest reads will have you wishing your out of office notification was one day longer. From sizzling thrillers and messy romances to high stakes fantasy and literary drama, this list has something for every booklover who needs an escape. Trust me, Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and Katabasis by R.F. Kuang are already living rentfree in my head.
Let’s dive in!
KATABASIS
by R.F. Kuang
Katabasis is dark academia with a fiery twist, literally. When Alice’s legendary (and possibly dead because of her) professor ends up in Hell, she’ll stop at nothing to rescue him… even if it means dragging her academic rival along for the ride. It’s snarky, intense, and full of chaotic magical energy. Think enemies-to-reluctant-allies but make it infernal.
PITCHER PERFECT
by Tessa Bailey
Tessa Bailey is doing what she does best, serving up swoony chaos with a side of spice. When cocky hockey rookie Robbie agrees to fake-date Skylar, a fierce softball pitcher who’s totally immune to his charm, sparks fly faster than a fastball. What starts as a flirty favor turns into real feelings during a wild family competition in the woods. It’s enemies-to-lovers, fake dating, and sports romance perfection, with plenty of heat and heart of course!
THE KNIGHT AND THE MOTH
by Rachel Gillig
A gothic, slow-burn fantasy with major dark academia and enemies-to-reluctant-allies vibes. Sybil is a dreamseer raised in a cathedral, just trying to finish her divine service in peace, until her fellow Diviners start disappearing. Enter Rodrick: a rude, heretical knight who might be the only one who can help (ugh, of course he’s hot). It’s moody, magical, and full of yearning. This one is perfect for fans of angsty banter and mysterious prophecies.
THE GHOSTWRITER
by Julie Clark
A slow-burn thriller wrapped in family secrets and literary drama. When Olivia Dumont is hired to ghostwrite her estranged father’s final book, she’s forced to confront the truth she’s spent her whole life avoiding, she’s the daughter of Vincent Taylor, infamous horror author and suspected murderer. But this time, he’s not writing fiction. He’s finally ready to tell the real story of the night his siblings died and it might just destroy
Night With nnie in Stratford: MUSICAL
HUG FOR THE SOUL
I left Annie at the Stratford Festival feeling lighter, brighter, and a little emotional — like my inner child had just been seen and hugged. That’s the magic of musical theatre, especially when it’s done with this much heart.
From the moment the “Little Girls”, as depicted in the song, took the stage, they completely stole the show. Their talent, timing, and presence were nothing short of remarkable. Harper Rae Asch, as Annie, lit up the stage — confident, captivating, and completely at ease in a role that asks a lot of a young performer. She carried the story with grace, but what truly moved me was how seamlessly the entire cast — children and adults — supported and elevated her. It felt like watching a sky full of stars surrounding one beautiful, bright centre.
Laura Condlin brought her own unique spark to Miss Hannigan — a role I’ve only ever associated with Carol Burnett. Condlin’s version is delightfully messy and oddly charming, filling the stage with her own brand of frazzled energy.
Dan Chameroy as Daddy Warbucks brings a steady, grounding presence to the show. His slow shift from emotionally distant tycoon to open-hearted father felt genuine and earned. His chemistry with both Annie and Grace (played by the stunning Jennifer Rider-Shaw) was warm and real.
Jennifer’s portrayal of Grace was absolutely luminous. Her crystalline voice, polished movement, and those breathtaking dresses gave her every reason to steal each scene she stepped into. And yes, even Sandy the dog had the audience wrapped around their paw.
Director Donna Feore has assembled a stellar ensemble and given them the freedom to move as one voice. Asch’s solo moments were strong and clear, but it was the collective presence of the entire cast that brought the magic. The audience was completely drawn in — especially during ensemble numbers with 16 actors moving in perfect rhythm. It was a joy to witness.
Annie offers more than nostalgia — it’s a hopeful, feel-good reminder that kindness matters, love can grow in unexpected places, and that sometimes a little girl really can change the world. In a season when we could all use a little more light, Annie delivers — in song, in sparkle, and in soul.

Why Do Dogs Bark? Understanding Your Pup’s Most Common Behaviour
Jack Donovan, thedogcoach.ca
Dogs bark to communicate, but decoding the message can be tricky. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is there a perceived threat? Recognizing the reason behind barking is essential to managing it effectively.
Why Do Dogs Bark?
That said, this summer carries a much more personal and important message for me.
Dogs bark for specific reasons, and recognizing the cause is essential. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is someone at the door, or is there a perceived
Many of you in the Tri-Cities know my nephew, Everett. He’s only a child and has already spent two years fighting Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. After 108 days in SickKids Hospital, Everett left with half of his hip and pelvis removed—and now he’s entering his third battle, with the cancer spreading to his spine and lungs.
By observing your dog’s body language and listening carefully, you can begin to understand what they’re trying to communicate. How you respond to barking can determine whether it becomes a persistent habit. If your dog barks because they want to play, ignoring the behaviour can help discourage it. Any attention-positive or negative-reinforces the barking. When barking serves a practical purpose, like alerting you to an empty water dish, it’s important to acknowledge and address it promptly.
Our instinct when a dog barks for attention is often to shush them or tell them to stop. However, whether you use soothing words or scolding, your reaction reinforces the behaviour. The barking got a response-exactly what your dog wanted. To break this cycle, ignore attention-seeking barking completely.
To support him and his parents, Megan and Chris, I’ve set up a GoFundMe to help cover costs during this incredibly difficult time—from lost income to essential equipment and therapies. If you’re able to donate or share, it would mean the world to our family. Visit: gofund.me/3309677e
Last fall, a client’s Goldendoodle, Charlie, had two types of barking. She would bark at the door to alert the family of a potential security threat and also bark for attention. While the door barking was helpful, the attention-seeking barking became problematic. By consistently ignoring this behaviour, Charlie learned it wasn’t rewarded. Instead, quiet behaviour earned positive reinforcement. Over time, she stopped barking for attention, but her helpful door barking remained.
Tips to Manage Barking
Understand the Cause: Ask yourself, "Why is my dog barking? Is it a genuine need or testing boundaries?"
Or simply search “Help Everett” on GoFundMe to find his campaign: Help Everett while he battles his third battle with cancer.
Avoid rewarding unnecessary barking. Even scolding reinforces the behaviour. Redirect Behaviour: Engage your dog in a productive activity once they stop barking.
Praise and reward quiet behaviour to encourage it in
To everyone who’s already supported Everett—thank you. But now, more than ever, we need our community to come together. Let’s make this summer about more than sunshine—let’s make it about showing up for each other.
Barking is your dog’s way of communicating, but it doesn’t always require a response. By understanding why your dog barks and responding consistently, you can guide them toward more appropriate communication. With patience and clear boundaries, you’ll build a stronger bond with your dog while maintaining peace at home.
ummer is finally here, and with it comes the excitement of sunny days, park visits, and getting outside with our dogs. But this season is already proving to be a scorcher, and it’s more important than ever to stay safe in the heat—both for ourselves and our pets. A few simple tips can go a long way. First, stay hydrated—for you and your dog. Heat exhaustion can sneak up quickly and often shows symptoms before we even realize we’re at risk. Bring water wherever you go and take breaks often. Also, keep your dogs off hot pavement. If it’s 30°C out, that sidewalk can easily burn their paws. Stick to shaded areas, grass, or even consider walking during cooler parts of the day.
If you’re looking for ways to keep your pup social without the heat, consider heading indoors. Local pet stores like PetSmart, Ren’s, Global Pet Foods, and even Canadian Tire often welcome leashed pets. It’s a great way to do some socialization training—especially for puppies— while staying cool.

Akadi Lumina
A Magical Acadian Night Walk
As evening descends on Bouctouche, the forest transforms into a glowing world of stories, music, and immersive light. Located at the Pays de la Sagouine (57 Acadie Street in Bouctouche, New Brunswick), Akadi Lumina offers an unforgettable night walk that brings Acadian culture to life through a magical blend of light, sound, and storytelling. With nine beautifully crafted stops, this sensory journey highlights the history, resilience, and joyful spirit of Acadie.
Where Light and Story Begin
The trail introduces visitors to a luminous forest where tradition and technology blend. Each bend in the path reveals striking visuals, soundscapes, and light-based artistry that narrate Acadia’s rich story. This immersive walk connects generations through shared history and emotion.
A Village Comes to Life
The experience opens with Villages, a glowing aerial perspective of an Acadian community. Projections showcase lively harbours, farm scenes, and warm homes, emphasizing the deep bond between Acadians and their land. It’s a heartwarming start that sets the tone for what lies ahead.
Echoes of Exile and Reunion
Torn Apart portrays the heartbreak of the Acadian Expulsion, separating guests briefly from their group in symbolic silence. Soon after, soft lights guide everyone back together, representing the resilience and reunification that defines Acadian strength and survival.
A Celebration Around the Table
At The Gathering Table, projected images of feasts and music play out across a glowing surface, inviting visitors into a lively celebration of Acadian hospitality. Folk melodies echo as guests take in this joyful tribute to family, food, and connection.
Hope Shines Bright
The Star is a radiant symbol of unity. In this quiet space, visitors reflect under its glow, connecting with Acadian dreams of both past and future. It’s a calming pause and a gentle reminder of shared purpose.
Crossing in Harmony
The Singing Bridge is a sensory marvel. As visitors walk across, voices and harmonies rise around them, each representing accent and spirit. Together, they form a powerful chorus celebrating cultural diversity and shared strength.
The Language of Light
At Echoes of Acadie, words illuminate the path, with illuminated expressions and poetry. The words evoke emotion, pride, and legacy — a reminder of how language preserves identity and carries stories across generations.
A Tree With Living Roots
Roots of Home features a grand, glowing tree pulsing with life and sound. Its illuminated roots and branches symbolize the connection between people and land, anchoring visitors in Acadian values like respect, unity, and endurance.
Dreams Under the Stars
The experience concludes at Amidst the Possibilities, beneath a starlit sky. Lights dance overhead while music swells, inviting guests to dream of Acadie’s future. It’s a poetic end — filled with hope, imagination, and cultural pride.
The Legacy of Akadi Lumina
Akadi Lumina is more than a night walk — it’s a living tribute to Acadian culture told through light, sound, and emotion. Each stop unveils a new facet of the Acadian journey, making it an unforgettable way to experience history, art, and nature in harmony. As you exit the trail, the luminous stories linger, reminding you of the vibrant legacy of Acadie.
