Editor’s Note

The seasons are changing, and I’m starting to see buds in my indoor garden—small reminders that new beginnings are always around the corner. Just as nature shifts, so do the times. Gone are the days of sitting down with a cup of tea and chuckling over shared stories from Reader’s Digest. Now, our social feeds are filled with political rhetoric, heartbreaking news, and an overwhelming amount of negativity.

To escape the chaos that social media creates in my mind, I’ve found solace in reruns of Little House on the Prairie—a simple joy that brings comfort. Sometimes, we all need a little old-fashioned fun to brighten our days.

Our Contributors

In this issue, we aim to bring a little more happiness into your life. With expert tips and advice, you’ll find inspiration to create your backyard oasis, prepare for Easter, or refresh your home’s interior. Whatever your plans, we hope you enjoy every page!

For our parent readers, we’re excited to introduce Out of the Mouth of Babes, a column dedicated to the unforgettable things our children say—the words that make us laugh, blush, or shake our heads in disbelief. These are the stories that stay with us, the ones we cherish for years to come. Because at the end of the day, life is about love, laughter, and the memories we create along the way.

The Original Money Candle

STONE HOME CREATIVES

stonehomecreatives.ca

Supporting local in home decor led me to the Money Candle at my local Home Hardware—a fun, fragrant find with a hidden toonie inside!

Created in 2001 by Stone Home Creatives in St. Marys, the original pillar candle revealed coins as it burned. In 2003, it was revamped to contain surprise cash prizes ranging from $1 to $100. Each small-batch candle (only 50 made at a time) offers great odds of a big win.

With a 70-hour burn time, the soy-based wax melts to reveal your coin. Use tweezers or a spoon to retrieve it, and if you hit the jackpot, your prize is sealed inside a glass bottle.

Copper-Toned Roofs

THE TREND TRANSFORMING CANADIAN HOMES

As the sun sets over a quiet neighborhood, copper-toned shingles glisten in the evening light. A new trend is taking hold—one that blends style, warmth, and character into Canadian homes.

For years, black and grey roofs dominated, but homeowners are now embracing natureinspired hues. BP Canada, a leader in roofing materials, has seen a rising demand for copper and bronze shades.

A Natural Evolution in Home Design

Interior trends often spill over into exteriors, and the monochromatic "colour drenching" movement is no exception. Homeowners are selecting warm, earthy roofs to harmonize their indoor and outdoor spaces.

“While black is still popular, warmer tones are gaining traction,” says Nathalie Lambert, Marketing Director of BP Canada. “Copper roofs create a welcoming, nature-connected feel.”

Copper roofs complement a variety of architectural styles, pairing seamlessly with brick, stone, and wood siding, offering a timeless, sophisticated appeal.

Visual Impact & Innovation

A roof covers nearly one-third of a home’s exterior, making colour choice crucial. Copper brown offers an elegant alternative to traditional shades, adding warmth and depth.

BP Canada has responded to this trend with its Signature line of shingles, which allows homeowners to blend two colours for a unique, dynamic look. Among their top picks for 2025 are Signature Mesquite and Toscana (Eastern Canada), and Signature Dublin and Edinburgh, which combine copper, tan, and grey tones.

Choosing the Right Roof Colour

Lambert offers key tips for selecting the perfect roof:

• Identify Your Style: Modern homes suit grey or blue tones, while copper and brown enhance rustic designs.

• Create Colour Harmony: A roof should compliment a home’s overall palette—copper pairs well with beige and brown facades.

• Follow Your Instincts: A roof is a long-term investment, so choose a shade you love.

• Try Before You Buy: Use BP Canada’s Visualizer tool to preview options before making a decision.

As homeowners continue seeking warm, nature-inspired exteriors, copper roofs are more than a trend—they’re a lasting investment in beauty and style.

This charming raised bungalow, owned by the same family for years, offers great potential in a mature, sought-after neighbourhood. Located near transport, schools, shopping, and parks, the spacious main floor features a large primary bedroom with an ensuite. The finished basement with high ceilings includes a family room and walkout to the backyard, with a bedroom that can be easily converted into two. The expansive backyard boasts an in-ground pool, perfect for relaxation or entertaining. With a double-wide driveway for ample parking, this solid home is a fantastic opportunity to create your dream family home or investment.

Luxurious brand new home, expertly crafted with 4680 sq/ft of total finished living space. The Ultimate Sofa Guide:

FINDING THE PERFECT FIT FOR STYLE & COMFORT

Choosing the perfect sofa can feel overwhelming, but it’s one of the most rewarding decisions in designing your space. A sofa is more than just a place to sit—it often serves as the centerpiece that defines the room’s mood and style. To make sure it fits your space, it’s important to consider both comfort and design. Key factors like height, arm style, and seat depth might seem small, but they can dramatically affect how your sofa looks and feels. Whether you’re looking for something sleek and modern or cozy, understanding these elements will help you create a space that’s both stylish and comfortable. Here are some of my guidelines to consider.

Height:

Finding the Perfect Fit When considering the height of a sofa, it’s essential to think about both the physical comfort it offers and how it interacts with the rest of the room’s furniture. Sofa height refers to the distance from the floor to the seat cushion. It may seem like a minor detail, but it can profoundly impact how comfortable and accessible the sofa feels.

LOW-PROFILE SOFAS

Low-profile sofas sit closer to the ground, often around 15-17 inches in height. These pieces are perfect for those looking to create a modern or minimalist look. The low height provides a sleek, contemporary feel, often associated with Scandinavian or mid-century modern designs. These sofas are great if you enjoy sprawling out or lounging in a relaxed position.

STANDARD HEIGHT SOFAS

Standard sofas are typically about 17-19 inches tall at the seat cushion, making them the most common and versatile option. These offer a balance between comfort and design and can work with a wide variety of décor styles. Standard-height sofas are great for families, as they’re easy to get in and out of, and they don’t dominate a space.

HIGH-PROFILE SOFAS

For a more formal or sophisticated look, consider a high-profile sofa, which typically has a seat height of 19 inches or more. High-profile designs often feature taller legs and deeper seat cushions, making them ideal for people who prefer sitting upright or have taller frames. These sofas work wonderfully in more traditional or luxury settings.

Photos by James Lee

Arm Style: Adding the Perfect Detail

Do not overlook the importance of the arm style of your sofa, as it plays a big role in both its appearance and comfort.

TRACK ARMS

Track arms, with their clean, straight lines, create a sleek, modern vibe—perfect for contemporary or industrial spaces. Though not heavily padded, their angular design gives a structured look.

ROLLED ARMS

The most popular arm style, rolled arms, are soft and rounded, often seen in traditional or classic sofas. They offer a comfy place to rest your arms and add a cozy, timeless warmth, making them great for formal or cottage-style rooms.

FLARED ARMS

Flared arms angle outward and add a subtle dynamic flair. Common in mid-century modern and transitional designs, they soften the sofa’s look

TUXEDO ARMS

Tuxedo arms are high and straight, running from the back to the front, giving the sofa a bold, formal appearance. They’re perfect for luxury spaces but may not be as comfortable for lounging.

ARMLESS SOFAS

Armless sofas are all about minimalist design, perfect for smaller rooms. They create an airy, open feel while keeping things stylish and simple.

Seat Depth:

Finding Your Comfort Zone

Seat depth is another important factor to consider when choosing a sofa. It refers to the measurement from the front of the seat cushion to the back of the sofa. The right seat depth can make a significant difference in how comfortable your sofa is for sitting or lounging.

SHALLOW SEAT DEPTH

(Less than 21”)

Sofas with a shallower seat depth are ideal for people who prefer sitting upright or who have shorter legs. These are great for more formal settings or smaller individuals who want to maintain a more active sitting position.

STANDARD SEAT DEPTH

(21-24”)

Most standard sofas have a seat depth that strikes a balance between comfort and functionality. A standard depth is suitable for a wide range of body types and sitting preferences, offering a comfortable place to sit for long periods.

DEEP SEAT DEPTH

(More than 24”)

Deep-seated sofas are perfect for those who love lounging or want a sofa that can accommodate taller individuals. This depth provides a spacious, cozy experience, perfect for sprawling out or curling up with a good book.

KEEP PROPORTIONS IN MIND

While height, arm style, and seat depth are important, it’s essential to consider the proportions of your sofa relative to the room it will be placed in. Make sure that the sofa doesn’t overwhelm the space, nor should it be too small for the room. For a more harmonious look, the length of your sofa should complement the size of the room, and the arm style should match the design of other elements in the space.

LAUREN JUDGE, creating a pluriverse

Dive with me for a moment into a beautiful world powered by a creative mind where theories in philosophy come to life through craft works and fine art.

Lauren Judge is a local professional artist, practicing since 2009, who recently earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Geography from Wilfrid Laurier University (2024), with a dissertation titled “Making the Pluriverse Visible: World-Making on the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula.” Her research explores how artists (herself included) collaborate with non-human elements in their work, shaping a world that embraces more than just human perspectives. This ties directly into her art—she’s all about creating a “pluriverse,” where humans, nature, and materials work together to make something beautiful.

For decades this inspirational woman has been in the local art scene. If you’ve wandered past my art Studio at 44 Gaukel, you likely have seen her gorgeous mural, “My Starry Night” painted on a shipping container used for craft shows. Or if you’ve ever taken

the ION LRT through Fairway Station, you couldn’t miss her large mosaic titled “Arras”. Lauren collaborated with Elana Zur to transform an LRT stop into a vibrant, textural masterpiece—200 square feet of glass mosaic patterns based on iconic fabric designs, an installation designed to remind us of the decades of culture and commercial businesses along that corridor.

Before mosaics and ceramics, Lauren started as a painter who experimented with modern abstraction. Her acrylic works are bold, intuitive, and full of clean, crisp layers. She creates with a mix of spontaneity and precision, making each piece feel both raw and deliberate. If you’re lucky enough to meet Lauren when you purchase a piece, she will describe to you her ‘aleatoric’ process - a random poured outline, but intentional colour applications. The canvas comes alive when she describes the connections

between her art and philosophical approach, which is certainly influenced by her scholarly research. I mean, besides receiving her PhD in 2024, in 2005 she earned a Master’s of Arts in Public History from the University of Waterloo, and in 2003 an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History & Humanities (Double Major) at York University. Lauren’s artistic inspiration goes way

back—she learned about painting from her father, Martin Ronald Judge, a talented local portrait artist and feminist sci-fi writer (talk about a creative gene pool!). Since 2009, she’s been building a name for herself professionally, with her paintings now in private collections across Canada, the U.S., and the Netherlands.

I can say with full confidence: you haven’t seen anything yet. This brilliant woman is just getting started and the best is yet to come.

If you are looking to add to your collection check out Lauren’s website: laurenjudge.com

AAs outdoor living spaces continue to grow in popularity, decking designs are evolving to reflect a blend of style, durability, and sustainability. Homeowners are increasingly seeking beautiful, functional decks that require minimal maintenance and can withstand the elements over time. From eco-friendly materials to innovative features, today’s decking options are transforming backyards into inviting, low-maintenance retreats. Whether you’re looking to refresh your current deck or embark on a brand-new project, these trends will help you create the perfect outdoor space for relaxation and entertaining. Let’s explore the key decking trends and how to elevate your outdoor living experience this season.

SUSTAINABLE DECKING: The Push for Eco-Friendly Materials

Sustainability is a top priority for homeowners, and composite decking is leading the way. Made from recycled wood fibers and plastic, composite materials are a great eco-friendly alternative that reduces environmental impact without compromising on durability. These materials last longer and require less maintenance compared to traditional wood, making them an attractive, sustainable option.

NATURAL, EARTHY TONES

In 2025, natural, earthy tones are making a big comeback. Think warm browns, soft grays, and rich taupe colours that blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. These shades complement outdoor furniture and greenery, creating a calming, organic feel. Many composite decking brands offer colours in this earthy palette, giving homeowners a wide range of options to suit their style.

LOW-MAINTENANCE DECKING

For those who want to enjoy their outdoor space without the hassle of constant upkeep, low-maintenance decking is key. Composite decking stands out in this category, particularly from brands like TREX. decking requires no sanding, sealing, or staining, Made from 95% recycled wood and plastic, resists fading, staining, and mold growth, ensuring long-lasting beauty with minimal effort. Additionally, you will find Their Transcend® Lineage also features heat-mitigating technology, keeping the deck surface cooler during hot summer days, making it more comfortable to walk on.

MULTI-LEVEL DECKS

Homeowners are increasingly choosing multi-level decks to add visual interest and make the most of their outdoor space. These designs allow for raised dining areas, sunken lounges, or even platforms for hot tubs, offering versatility and better privacy. Multi-level decks can enhance the overall layout, improving both aesthetics and functionality.

INTEGRATED LIGHTING & SMART FEATURES

Integrated lighting adds ambiance and safety to your deck. LED lighting, including post caps, stair lights, and hidden lights, creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Many brands also offer smart home features, allowing you to control lighting, heaters, and outdoor speakers directly from your smartphone.

Pro Tips for Your Decking Project

CONSIDER LONG-TERM VALUE

Composite decking, like TREX, may have a higher upfront cost than wood but saves money over time due to its low-maintenance nature. Its durability and resistance to the elements can also increase your home’s resale value.

GRAIN PATTERNS:

Adding Texture and Character

One of the most appealing aspects of decking is the variety of grain patterns available. Whether you prefer a traditional, natural wood grain or the more modern, uniform lines of composite decking, the grain can have a significant impact on the overall aesthetic of your deck. Natural wood grains create a timeless, classic look, while more uniform or intricate grain patterns in composite materials can offer a more contemporary or polished feel.

PLAN FOR PRIVACY

Add tall railings or privacy screens to create an intimate space, especially if your deck is in close proximity to neighbors

DESIGN FOR ALL SEASONS

Incorporate weather-resistant materials, like composite decking, and consider features such as built-in seating and heating to ensure your deck is enjoyable year-round.

When choosing decking materials, pay attention to the grain pattern. If you want a more traditional look, go for natural wood grains that give off a rustic charm. For a more modern or sleek appearance,

consider composite decking with subtle or minimal grain patterns that give your deck a clean, refined finish..

Decking trends ahead is all about combining sustainability,low-maintenance options, and modern style.long-lasting,beautiful outdoor space with minimal upkeep.

Whether you’re designing a multi-level retreat or a minimalist haven,2025 has the perfect trends to transform your deck into an outdoor sanctuary.

Hot Cross Buns

Store-bought Hot Cross Buns can’t match the taste of fresh, homemade ones! Soft, fragrant, and easier to make than you think, these buns have no artificial flavors or preservatives.

INGREDIENTS

For the Buns:

• 3 tsp (9g) instant yeast

• ½ cup (110g) caster sugar

• 1 ½ cups (375ml) warm milk

• 4 ¼ cups (640g) bread or all-purpose flour

• 2 tsp cinnamon

• 2 tsp allspice/mixed spice

• ½ tsp salt

• 1 ½ cups (210g) sultanas

• Zest of 1–2 oranges

• 50g (3.5 tbsp) melted butter

• 1 egg, room temp

• ¼ cup (35g) extra flour (for kneading)

For the Crosses:

• ½ cup (75g) flour

• 5 tbsp water

For the Glaze:

• 1 tbsp apricot jam

• 2 tsp water

INSTRUCTIONS

To prepare the dough, combine flour, yeast, sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and salt in a large bowl. Add butter, warm milk, egg, sultanas, and orange zest, mixing until well incorporated. Knead the dough using a stand mixer with a dough hook for about five minutes, adding flour if needed. If kneading by hand, work the dough on a floured surface for approximately ten minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Once kneaded, place the dough in a covered bowl and allow it to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, which typically takes between 30 to 90 minutes. After rising, line a 9x13-inch baking tray with parchment paper. Punch down the dough, shape it into a log, and divide it into twelve equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball and arrange them in a 3x4 grid on the tray. Cover loosely with oiled cling wrap and let the buns rise for another 30 to 45 minutes until they expand by about 75%. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

To create the signature cross, mix flour and water into a thick paste and pipe a cross onto each bun. Bake for approximately 22 minutes, or until the buns turn a deep golden brown. While they bake, microwave a mixture of jam and water for 30 seconds, then stir until smooth. Once the buns are out of the oven, brush them with the warm jam glaze. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy!

Upside DownLemon Meringue Pie

II love the vibrant tastes and fresh scents that come with Spring! From blooming flowers to browsing garden centers, there’s nothing better than getting outside and soaking up the warm sunshine. I also enjoy planting fruits and vegetables, watching new life emerge, and enjoying the rewards of my efforts throughout the summer and fall.

INGREDIENTS: Topping:

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 1 tablespoon sugar

• 1 lemon, for serving

• Filling:

• 8 large egg yolks, room temperature

• 1 cup sugar

• 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest (from 2 lemons)

• ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 2 lemons)

• 1 cup heavy cream

Crust:

• Unsalted butter, softened, for pie plate

• 4 large egg whites, room temperature

• ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

• 1 cup sugar

With Easter just around the corner, I’m excited to share one of my favourite seasonal desserts—a refreshing upside down lemon meringue pie, inspired by Martha Stewart. One bite, and you can truly feel Spring in your soul. The perfect balance of tart and sweet makes it a delightful way to end an Easter family dinner!

DIRECTIONS

Make the Crust

1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C) with a rack in the center. Lightly brush a 9-inch pie plate with butter. Using a mixer, whisk egg whites and 1 tablespoon cold water on high speed until foamy (about 30 seconds). Add cream of tartar and continue to beat until soft peaks form (about 1 minute). Gradually add sugar and beat until thick, glossy peaks form (about 5 minutes).

2. Transfer egg-white mixture to the prepared pie plate, spreading it along the bottom and up the sides to form a crust (but not past the rim). Bake until the meringue is crisp and lightly golden on the outside (about 40 minutes). Turn off the oven and let it cool inside for 1 hour, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare the Filling:

3. In a medium saucepan (off heat), whisk egg yolks until thick and pale yellow (1-2 minutes). Whisk in sugar, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Place over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until the mixture thickens (about 10 minutes). Transfer to a large bowl and cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the curd. Refrigerate until fully chilled (at least 1 hour, or up to 1 day).

4. Whisk curd until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream on high speed until soft peaks form (about 30 seconds). Gently fold the whipped cream into the curd in batches. Fill the meringue crust with the lemon curd mixture, smoothing the top. Cover loosely and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or up to 1 day.

Make the Topping & Serve:

5. Whip heavy cream and sugar on high speed until stiff peaks form (about 40 seconds). Spread over the pie and finish with finely grated lemon zest. Slice with a sharp knife (wiping between cuts) and enjoy!

Why Do Dogs Bark? Understanding Your Pup’s Most Common Behaviour

Dogs bark to communicate, but decoding the message can be tricky. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is there a perceived threat? Recognizing the reason behind barking is essential to managing it effectively.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

Dogs bark for specific reasons, and recognizing the cause is essential.

Needs: Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside?

Attention: Are they bored or seeking interaction?

Alerts: Is someone at the door, or is there a perceived threat?

By observing your dog’s body language and listening carefully, you can begin to understand what they’re trying to communicate.

How you respond to barking can determine whether it becomes a persistent habit. If your dog barks because they want to play, ignoring the behaviour can help discourage it. Any attention-positive or negative-reinforces the barking. When barking serves a practical purpose, like alerting you to an empty water dish, it’s important to acknowledge and address it promptly.

Our instinct when a dog barks for attention is often to shush them or tell them to stop. However, whether you use soothing words or scolding, your reaction reinforces the behaviour. The barking got a response-exactly what your dog wanted. To break this cycle, ignore attention-seeking barking completely.

Last fall, a client’s Goldendoodle, Charlie, had two types of barking. She would bark at the door to alert the family of a potential security threat and also bark for attention. While the door barking was helpful, the attention-seeking barking became problematic. By consistently ignoring this behaviour, Charlie learned it wasn’t rewarded. Instead, quiet behaviour earned positive reinforcement. Over time, she stopped barking for attention, but her helpful door barking remained.

Tips to Manage Barking

Understand the Cause: Ask yourself, "Why is my dog barking? Is it a genuine need or testing boundaries?"

Stay Consistent: Avoid rewarding unnecessary barking. Even scolding reinforces the behaviour.

Redirect Behaviour: Engage your dog in a productive activity once they stop barking.

Reward Silence: Praise and reward quiet behaviour to encourage it in the future.

Barking is your dog’s way of communicating, but it doesn’t always require a response. By understanding why your dog barks and responding consistently, you can guide them toward more appropriate communication. With patience and clear boundaries, you’ll build a stronger bond with your dog while maintaining peace at home.

Gradual Social Exposure

As warmer weather brings more people and pets outdoors, it’s important to prepare your dog for increased social interaction. Start with controlled environments like pet shops to build up their socialization skills. This gradual exposure helps prevent overstimulation and ensures positive experiences in busier settings.

A Family ADVENTURE in Niagara Falls:

Celebrating at the Americana

As Spring quickly approaches, our family decided to celebrate my nephew’s fourth birthday in style at the Americana Waterpark Resort & Spa in Niagara Falls. This trip was not just about marking another milestone for him but also about creating unforgettable memories together.

A UNIQUE STAY AT THE AMERICANA

The Americana is a truly unique destination that effortlessly blends comfort with entertainment. With beautifully designed rooms, an exciting waterpark, and a lively arcade, there’s never a dull moment. One of its best features is the seamless connectivity—whether you’re heading to the waterpark, arcade, or dining at Boston Pizza, a personal favorite of mine. If you go, don’t miss their incredible spinach dip! The resort’s Breakfast Buffet is another highlight, offering an impressive selection of hot beverages and unlimited juice, making it a fantastic dining choice during your stay.

For parents looking for a little relaxation, the Americana also boasts an inhouse spa. This is a perfect escape for moms who want to unwind while their children enjoy the waterpark. Additionally, the waterpark has a food and bar option conveniently attached to the arcade, ensuring that fun and refreshments are always within reach.

OUR ROOM EXPERIENCE

As a family of six, finding accommodations that comfortably fit all of us can be challenging. However, the suite at the Americana was perfect. It offered two queensize beds in a private room, along with an additional bed in a separate space next to a small kitchen. The layout provided ample space for everyone—our parents (the grandparents) had their own room, while my brother, his wife, their child, a friend, and I had the shared space. It was a great setup that balanced both privacy and togetherness.

One of my personal highlights was the luxurious bathtub. As someone who loves a relaxing soak, the bathtub at the Americana was an absolute delight, perfect for unwinding after a day of excitement.

THE PERFECT LOCATION

Beyond the fantastic amenities within the resort, the Americana is ideally located close to Clifton Hill, making it easy to explore even more attractions in Niagara Falls. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly getaway or a funfilled weekend, the Americana offers something for everyone.

Our trip to Niagara Falls was filled with laughter, adventure, and cherished moments. The Americana provided the ideal setting for my nephew’s fourth birthday celebration, and we left with wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re planning a family trip to Niagara Falls, I highly recommend staying at the Americana—you won’t be disappointed!

~Out of the Mouth of Babes~

There’s nothing quite as nostalgic as reminiscing about the hilarious, embarrassing, and downright cringeworthy things our kids have said over the years. These moments stay with us, becoming cherished stories we retell time and time again. I’d love for our readers to take part in this column by sharing their own priceless kid quotes— email your stories to lettertotheeditor@wildflowersmedia.ca

I’ll start.

For the longest time, my 6-yearold son kept complaining about his stomach. Since it was the holiday season, I chalked it up to all the sweets and chips he’d been

indulging in. During our yearly trip to Quebec, he continued to complain, but with my father generously offering him more treats, I assumed that was the culprit.

When we returned home and he was still feeling unwell, I decided it was time for a hospital visit. As he lay in the hospital bed, the doctor gently examined him, asking about his symptoms. After a few questions and some careful pressing on his belly, the doctor finally asked, “Do you get gas?”

Looking pitiful yet earnest, my son meekly replied, “No, I wait in the car while my dad gets it.”

My daughter and I burst into laughter, while the poor doctor looked utterly confused.

Know Your Skin:

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE FOR BETTER SKINCARE

Why Knowing Your Skin Type Matters

Understanding your skin type is the foundation of an effective skincare routine. Whether you’re struggling with acne, dryness, or excessive oiliness, choosing the right products and treatments depends on recognizing what your skin truly needs. Using the wrong products can lead to irritation, breakouts, or an imbalanced complexion.

If you’ve ever wondered why some products work wonders for your friends but not for you, the answer likely lies in your skin type. Let’s break down the different types of skin and how you can determine yours.

THE FIVE MAIN SKIN TYPES

Normal Skin

Balanced, neither too oily nor too dry, with minimal blemishes and a radiant complexion.

Oily Skin

Prone to excess shine, enlarged pores, and breakouts due to overactive sebaceous glands.

Combination Skin

A mix of oily and dry areas, usually with an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and drier cheeks.

Dry Skin

Feels tight, rough, or flaky, often appearing dull due to a lack of moisture.

Sensitive Skin

Easily irritated by products, environmental factors, or diet, often showing redness, itching, or burning sensations.

“Whether you’re struggling with acne, dryness, or excessive oiliness, choosing the right products and treatments depends on recognizing what your skin truly needs”
- Audrey Moir

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

The Bare-Faced Test

1. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat dry.

2. Leave your skin bare for 30 minutes (no moisturizer or toner).

3. After 30 minutes, examine how your skin feels and looks:

4. If it feels comfortable with no excess oil or dryness, you likely have normal skin.

5. If your skin appears shiny all over, you likely have oily skin.

6. If it feels tight or rough, especially around the cheeks, you likely have dry skin.

7. If you have shine in your T-zone but dryness on your cheeks, you likely have combination skin.

8. If you notice redness, irritation, or a stinging sensation, you likely have sensitive skin.

The Blotting Paper Test

1. Press a clean blotting paper gently onto different areas of your face.

2. Hold the paper up to the light and check the amount of oil absorbed:

3. Minimal to no oil suggests dry skin.

4. A moderate amount of oil suggests normal skin.

5. Oil in the T-zone but not on the cheeks suggests combination skin.

6. A significant amount of oil all over the face suggests oily skin.

Other Clues to Look For

• If your skin reacts strongly to new products, fragrances, or weather changes, you likely have sensitive skin.

• If you rarely experience breakouts and your skin feels balanced, you likely have normal skin.

• If your pores are large and visible, you likely have oily or combination skin.

TAILORING YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

Once you determine your skin type, choosing the right products becomes easier:

Normal Skin:

Maintain balance with a gentle cleanser, lightweight moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Oily Skin:

Use a foaming or gel-based cleanser, oil-free moisturizer, and non-comedogenic products.

Dry Skin:

Opt for hydrating cleansers, thick moisturizers, and avoid alcoholbased products.

Combination Skin:

Use lightweight, oil-free products and apply different treatments to different areas as needed.

Sensitive Skin:

Stick to fragrancefree, gentle, and hypoallergenic products to minimize irritation.

Understanding your skin type is essential for healthy, glowing skin. If you’re still unsure, consult a dermatologist or esthetician for a professional assessment. The key to great skin is not just about using skincare products but using the right ones for your unique skin type.

So, take the time to test your skin, identify its needs, and build a routine that works for you. Your skin will thank you!
