Editor’s NOTE

As summer settles in, I find myself excited about the ways home tech and automation can simplify our lives. In this month’s note, I want to dive into how these innovations can make our daily routines more seamless and stress-free. People often giggle at me for my love of Alexa, my automated lights, and how I use Alexa to play my music and give me reminders throughout the day, but I find it all so helpful and fun! From smart home systems that keep everything running smoothly to helpful tips for parents on keeping their kids safe online, technology is here to enhance our lives in meaningful ways.

In this issue, come travel with us to Nashville and the CMA Fest, thanks to Booking.com, as well as a local staycation adventure to Niagara. And don’t miss my Editor’s Picks, where I highlight some yummy wine by Greasy Fingers and two must-visit locations that will let you support our local economy this summer. Here’s to a tech-savvy summer that keeps us all on track and enjoying every moment. We hope you enjoy this issue!

Vino

An Editor’s

without the Vanity

Pick for Wine Lovers Who Prefer

Pizza Over Platters

We used to think wine needed an occasion—the swirl, the sniff, the perfect pairing. But more Canadians are ditching the formality and asking: can I drink this with chips?

Yes—and it’s better than you think.

Over 68% say their guilty pleasure is wine with greasy food—and top chefs agree.

Enter Greasy Fingers, a new wine in Canada made to cut through the richness of comfort foods like chips, burgers, fries, and pizza. It’s refined wine for unrefined food, created for those craving less traditional pairings.

To keep it simple, there’s just one red and one white. The choice? Whatever you like.

It’s vino without vanity—and why burger master Joe Friday is a fan. Here’s his go-to Smash Burger recipe that pairs perfectly with Greasy Fingers Red:

LOCAL Treasures

Chung Chun is a hit in Waterloo

chungchunricedog.ca

After seeing Korean hot dogs all over my feed, I finally tried Chung Chun Rice Hot Dog in Waterloo—and it lived up to the hype. Crispy, gooey, and totally addictive. Located on University Ave, this spot is a must-try for serious snack lovers.

Chef Joe Friday’s Greasy Burger

Patty:

1 lb ground beef, 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp Worcestershire.

Toppings:

2 slices cheese, 2 brioche buns, butter, caramelized onions, 2 bacon slices, ¼ cup truffle mayo (2 tbsp mayo + ½ tsp truffle oil), pickles.

Grill patties, melt cheese, toast buns, assemble, devour. Serve with fries—and a glass of Greasy Fingers Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Say

Cheese:

Discovering Gouda

Greatness at Mountainoak mountainoakcheese.ca

A visit to Mountainoak Cheese near New Hamburg is a delicious dive into artisanal cheesemaking. Their awardwinning Gouda—from creamy and aged to smoked and spiced—is a must-try. The family-run farm offers monthly tours, tastings, and a welcoming shop stocked with cheese curds and local charm. It’s a flavorful experience rooted in Dutch tradition and Waterloo Region pride. If you love cheese, this local gem is well worth the trip—just don’t forget a cooler!

Redefining the Everyday

A DESIGNER’S PERSPECTIVE ON BATHROOM RENOVATION

Renovating your bathroom is a unique opportunity to reimagine one of the most essential and frequently used spaces in your home. It’s where functionality meets refinement, a place where thoughtful design doesn’t just elevate aesthetics but transforms how the space supports your daily routine.

Whether you’re refreshing a compact urban powder room or undertaking a full transformation of a grand ensuite, a well-planned renovation can improve spatial flow, maximize storage, enhance lighting, and incorporate high-performance fixtures that elevate the overall experience. Beyond comfort and utility, a beautifully executed bathroom remodel can significantly increase your home’s long-term value. It often stands as one of the most impactful investments a homeowner can make, offering both lifestyle upgrades and excellent resale potential.

Start by considering how you use the space. Do you love a long soak at the end of the day, or is your routine centered around quick, efficient showers? Your answer will shape the layout. If you’re not a bath person, skip the tub and focus on a spacious, well-appointed shower, perhaps with a bench or steam feature for added comfort. If baths are your sanctuary, a freestanding tub makes for a luxurious focal point.

A cohesive bathroom should reflect the style of the rest of your home. It’s easy to get swept up in trends, but timeless choices tend to age gracefully and offer better resale value. Whether your aesthetic leans modern,

transitional, or somewhere in between, select materials and finishes that align with your personal style. When it comes to cabinetry, durability matters. Solid hardwoods like maple or birch outperform MDF, which can deteriorate over time in moisture-prone areas.

And don’t overlook ventilation. A high-quality exhaust fan is essential, especially in condos, to protect finishes and extend the life of your renovation.

Make a Statement with Tile and Flooring

Tile and flooring play a vital role, both visually and functionally. Safety is key. Opt for slip-resistant flooring like honed ceramic, textured porcelain, or natural stone with grip. Smaller tiles tend to offer better traction and work well in compact spaces, visually balancing the room. For walls, large-format tiles can create a clean, modern look and help a space feel more expansive. In powder rooms or smaller bathrooms, vinyl wall coverings add texture and personality. They’re also water-resistant and easy to maintain.

Balance Form with Function

Scale is everything. A freestanding tub may look stunning, but in a tight space, it can overwhelm the room. Instead, consider a larger walk-in shower that feels equally indulgent while maximizing usable floor space. Custom or floating vanities are another smart move. They offer generous storage while making the room feel more open. Wall-mounted faucets can enhance that clean, modern look and simplify cleaning around countertops.

Elevate with Lighting

Lighting for me is a game-changer in any bathroom. Think in layers: ambient lighting for overall brightness, task lighting for grooming, and accent lighting to set the mood. Wall sconces or backlit mirrors are perfect at the vanity, providing focused illumination where it’s needed most. To enhance the atmosphere, add a pendant above the tub or LED strips beneath the vanity. These small touches add drama and create a spa-like ambiance. Pair your lighting with finishes like matte black or brushed gold to tie the space together with modern sophistication.

Pro Tip: When selecting fixtures, prioritize quality. Choose solid brass construction, ceramic disc valves, and timeless finishes.

Finish with Personality

Once the major decisions are made, it’s the finishing touches that truly complete the space. Add personality with plush, high-quality towels, a cozy bath mat, and thoughtfully chosen accessories. Don’t forget smart storage solutions. Built-in shower niches, floating shelves, hooks, and custom cabinetry help maintain order and support a calm, spa-like environment.

Choose solid brass construction, ceramic disc valves, and timeless finishes. One of my go-to Canadian brands is VOGT, known for high-performance fixtures that balance durability with sophisticated design. Their collections feature clean lines, ergonomic controls, and finishes like matte black, brushed nickel, white, and polished chrome. Looking for unique colours, the Mond Collection offers a wide choice of interchangeable handle colours, allowing you to tailor your fixtures to your specific aesthetic. from minimalist modern to refined traditional.

Redesigning your bathroom isn’t just about updating a space. It’s about creating a sanctuary that supports your lifestyle, reflects your taste, and adds comfort to your everyday routine. With thoughtful planning, beautiful materials, and reliable fixtures, your bathroom can become one of the most cherished rooms in your home. Because comfort, beauty, and craftsmanship aren’t luxuries in a bathroom. They’re essentials.

Past, Present, Public:

A Love Letter to Kitchener’s Art Scene

Public Art causes us to pause, reflect, feel, and, most of all, forces us to boost our own creativity in one way or another.

My first memory of a sculpture in Kitchener is Edward Zelenak’s 1978 piece ‘Aporia’, which means ‘contradiction’ or ‘I don’t know what to think.’ This large fiberglass orange sculpture was recently restored for $27,000 and still stands in its original location at Frederick St. and Lancaster St. E. in Kitchener. I recall being a child in the 80’s, spending time staring at it and wondering if it was a worm or a pretzel. As I got older, it seemed more phallic in its appearance, and I genuinely gained a different appreciation for this piece. There is something spectacular in art that evokes strange emotions, and this sculpture does exactly that.

Me and my mom infront of the @clandestinosart mural

More recently, ‘Past Present Future’ by Ernest Daetwyler was commissioned by regional council and installed in front of 20 Weber St. E. in Kitchener. This seven-sphere sculpture embodies the concept of time through material and form. The past is represented by solid limestone spheres and a larger sphere constructed from historic bricks salvaged from local buildings. The present is captured in a highly polished steel sphere, a mirror-like surface that literally reflects the viewer and surroundings, encouraging a moment of introspection. Looking ahead, the future takes shape in a series of pixilated, plastic-like spheres; these fragmented forms suggest some kind of technological evolution. Modern and beautiful, it draws you in for a closer look.

Kitchener also recently installed massive frames on various buildings around the downtown core. In a true gallery fash-

ion, they rotate the gorgeous art pieces yearly, allowing us to fully absorb each piece of art before the next artist is selected for the following year. It doesn’t stop on the buildings, Kitchener’s BIA’s Art on the Edge brings more art to the streets with this year’s Palette x Palate Festival. The extremely talented Annette Kraft Van Ermel is looking gorgeous in front of her minimalist floral designs against a dark backdrop. These wildflowers are indicative of her earlier works and present a striking contrast, with a dramatic visual effect.

While strolling around downtown, take to the alleys, where you will see the BIA’s permanent collection of mural art featuring incredible graffiti-style artists like the adorable couple Shalak and Bruno from Toronto. They left us a legacy of meaningful masterpieces like the Earth in the robot’s hand. This dynamic couple is truly gifted, like World-class artists Lady Pink and Banksy, legends in the graffiti art scene. Street art is growing quickly in popularity and price tag. You can not see a train go by without noticing someone has left their mark. One of my favourite graffiti pieces is from 2020, it is the massive purple floating figure painted on the cement wall in the Elora Gorge. This piece was unlikely commissioned and, in true graffiti fashion, may be covered up by authorities

one day. It is important to know that a Banksy mural can fetch $10,000,000, so to cover up a masterpiece can be equivalent to burning money at a Chinese funeral. It holds true to traditions but doesn’t always make sense to someone like me.

Public art isn’t just nourishment for the soul, it’s fuel for the street. Murals and installations draw people in, spark curiosity, and create conversations, often boosting foot traffic for nearby businesses. They transform everyday spaces, igniting imagination and inviting us to pause, reflect, and connect. The art we experience today becomes part of the stories and memories we carry forward, evolving with us as we grow and shift perspectives. Take time to look for art all around you this summer. If you’re in Kitchener, check out the BIA’s art map, A Field Guide to DTK’s Art Walk.

Greener Heat, Cleaner Cool

THE FUTURE OF CLIMATE CONTROL

Ontario homeowners are entering a new era of energyefficient, sustainable home comfort. As energy costs rise and climate concerns grow, the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) industry is delivering smarter and greener solutions that improve comfort while reducing environmental impact.

SMART TECHNOLOGY

Today’s HVAC systems integrate with smart home platforms, allowing remote control via phones or voice assistants. These systems learn your habits, adjust settings automatically, and send maintenance alerts, boosting efficiency and convenience.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY & ECO-FRIENDLY OPTIONS

Modern systems boast high SEER ratings (over 20 in many cases), variable-speed compressors, and heat exchangers that reduce energy consumption. Ductless mini-splits and hybrid heat pumps are ideal for both new and existing homes. Meanwhile, the industry is moving toward ecofriendly refrigerants that reduce harm to the environment. Homeowners are also pairing systems with renewable energy like solar panels, while geothermal heat pumps— once niche—are becoming more accessible.

BETTER INDOOR AIR QUALITY

With rising awareness of air quality, advanced HVAC systems now include HEPA filtration, UV-C light sterilization, and smart air quality sensors to eliminate allergens and pollutants—creating healthier living environments.

FLEXIBLE & AFFORDABLE OPTIONS

Subscription-based HVAC services are trending, reducing upfront installation costs and covering regular maintenance. Modular systems are also growing in popularity, offering flexibility to expand or upgrade as needs change.

INCENTIVES & REBATES

Ontario offers generous rebates for HVAC upgrades. Homeowners can receive up to $7,500 for cold climate air source heat pumps, $12,000 for ground source heat pumps, and $125 for smart thermostats. The Canada Greener Homes Loan and various local incentives make upgrades more affordable than ever.

WHY IT MATTERS

Lower Bills: Efficient systems cut energy costs.

Comfort: Better temperature control and cleaner air.

Sustainability: Reduced environmental impact.

Peace of Mind: Easier maintenance with smart systems and subscriptions.

Financial Help: Rebates and loans ease the investment. Whether you’re renovating or building new, 2025 is the perfect time to explore smart, sustainable HVAC options. Work with a certified HVAC pro to find the right solution—and make sure to claim your rebates.

LIVING SMART

How Home Automation Simplifies Life and Elevates Everyday Living

Imagine waking up to the soft glow of smart lighting, your blinds slowly rising to reveal the morning sun, and the scent of freshly brewed coffee awakening your senses from the kitchen. Incredibly so, this reality is made possible through home automation.

Modern home automation is about more than convenience; it’s about designing a lifestyle that supports ease, comfort, and energy efficiency. From large smart appliances to subtle touches like automated shades, technology is transforming the way we live in and love our homes.

Appliances That Think Ahead

Smart appliances, both large and small, play a key role in simplifying household routines. Refrigerators from brands like LG and Samsung now come equipped with internal cameras, inventory tracking, and touchscreen displays that let you plan meals, check expiration dates, or even stream music. Meanwhile, smart ovens preheat remotely and adjust temperature automatically based on recipes. Small appliances—like Wi-Fi-enabled coffee makers, robotic vacuums, and air purifiers—free up time for what matters most.

Comfort at Your Command

Heating and cooling have seen massive innovation. Smart thermostats like Ecobee and Nest learn your habits and optimize climate control room by room. Not only does this improve comfort, but it also cuts down energy waste, contributing to lower bills and greener living.

Lighting That Sets the Mood

Lighting is no longer just about visibility; it’s about ambiance. Smart lighting systems such as Philips Hue and Lutron Caséta allow homeowners to adjust brightness, colour temperature, and even light color to suit

different moods and times of day. Set a “movie night” scene, create a calm evening glow, or brighten the kitchen as dinner is prepared—all with a voice command or app.

Shades, Blinds, and Natural Flow

Motorized window coverings are a game-changer. Companies like Lutron and Somfy offer shades and blinds that can rise and lower on a schedule or respond to changing sunlight. This

not only boosts comfort and privacy, but it also protects furnishings from UV damage and improves home efficiency.

At its core, home automation isn’t about gadgets—it’s about designing a home that works in harmony with your life. Whether you’re a busy professional, an on-the-go family, or enjoying retirement, automation offers ways to simplify daily tasks and focus on what’s important in your daily life.

With smart home technology, your house becomes more than a place to live; it becomes a partner in living well. And that’s the true meaning of the good life.

“A home should reflect your values and lifestyle, choose a space that truly nourishes your soul.” – Eva Landreth

NAVIGATING THROUGH The Buying Process

Buying a home in today’s market—especially a secondary property—can feel overwhelming. With so many options available, having a knowledgeable real estate agent by your side is essential.

Eva Landreth of Century 21 offers expert guidance to help buyers approach the process with confidence and clarity.

ENVISION YOUR LIFESTYLE

Before diving into listings, Eva recommends stepping back to consider your ideal lifestyle. Especially when exploring properties in the Southern Georgian Bay area, buyers must reflect on how they plan to use the home. Are you seeking an outdoor-focused lifestyle with ski slope access and nearby trails? A cozy chalet to gather with friends and family? Or perhaps you’re relocating full-time and require access to quality schools and services? Defining your goals early makes all the difference.

CONSIDER COMMUNITY FIT

While a remote setting with panoramic views may sound appealing, Eva encourages buyers to think about long-term lifestyle needs. For families, a neighbourhood with bike paths, playgrounds, and local community activities might be more suitable than a quiet, secluded lot. The right community can have a significant impact on your everyday experience.

CHOOSE A HOME THAT REFLECTS YOU

Eva believes a home should reflect your values and lifestyle. Whether you’re drawn to a charming ski chalet or a contemporary family home, selecting a space that nurtures your soul is key.

WORK WITH A LOCAL EXPERT

One of Eva’s top tips is to partner with a knowledgeable, local agent who knows the ins and outs of the area. A seasoned agent can offer valuable insights on niche factors— such as docking rights for waterfront

properties or rental potential in resort zones. They may also provide access to off-market listings and early opportunities.

STAY INFORMED AND BE READY

Understanding market dynamics is crucial. A good realtor will supply current data on pricing and demand, helping you act with confidence. In a fast-moving market, having financing pre-approved and being ready to make a decisive offer gives you a clear advantage.

Whether it’s your first home or a second property, remember: you don’t need to know everything. With the right real estate expert by your side, the process becomes much more manageable—and far more rewarding.

Summer Body Care

As temperatures rise and layers come off, summer becomes the season where skin health takes center stage. Whether you’re heading poolside, traveling, or just soaking up some sunshine, now is the time to refine your body care routine to keep skin looking radiant, smooth, and protected.

Here’s your expert-approved summer body care guide for glowing, healthy skin from head to toe.

Exfoliation is Essential

After months of dry indoor air and heavier skincare products, many notice a buildup of dead skin cells that dull the complexion. Begin your summer regimen with gentle body exfoliation 1–2 times per week. This boosts cell turnover, improves texture, and helps your hydrating products absorb more effectively.

Pro Tip: Focus on areas with thicker skin or uneven texture—like elbows, knees, and heels. Enzymebased exfoliants or scrubs with natural grains are effective without over-stripping.

YOUR GLOW UP STARTS NOW

Hydrate Intelligently

Heat, humidity, and outdoor elements can dehydrate the skin, even when it doesn’t feel dry. Switch to a fast-absorbing body lotion or gel moisturizer that delivers hydration without heaviness. Look for ingredients like:

• Hyaluronic acid – attracts water to the skin

• Aloe vera – soothes and calms

• Ceramides – restore the skin barrier

Pro Tip: Apply moisturizer immediately after showering, when skin is still slightly damp, to lock in moisture more effectively.

SPF: The Ultimate Summer Essential

UV rays are the leading cause of premature aging, pigmentation, and skin cancer. Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily is a nonnegotiable—especially on high-exposure areas like shoulders, chest, arms, and legs.

Pro Tip: For touch-ups, especially on the go or over makeup, consider using a powder-form sunscreen. It’s perfect for areas like the hairline, scalp, and hands where creams may be less convenient.

Target Skin Concerns with Purpose

Summer is a great time to address common body skin issues such as body acne, ingrown hairs, hyperpigmentation, or uneven tone. Professional treatments can support long-term improvements:

• Back facials to clear congestion

• Body peels for smoother texture

• Laser treatments for pigmentation or hair removal (with sun exposure precautions)

Clinical Note: Always consult with a licensed professional before beginning any laser or resurfacing treatments— timing around sun exposure is crucial to prevent complications.

Sun-Kissed Without the Damage

A safe summer glow doesn’t require sun damage. Opt for professional or high-quality self-tanning products with dihydroxyacetone (DHA) for a bronzed look minus the risks. Prepping the skin with exfoliation and hydration is key for even, natural-looking results.

Expert Reminder: Avoid oil-based products before spray-tanning to prevent patchy development, and use a mitt or glove for streak-free application.

Consistency is What Counts

Healthy, radiant skin isn’t built overnight. It comes from consistent care—inside and out. Prioritize hydration, a nutrient-rich diet (loaded with antioxidants and healthy fats), and simple but effective daily routines. When paired with professional guidance and occasional treatments, your skin will stay vibrant all season long.

Why Do Dogs Bark? Understanding Your Pup’s Most Common Behaviour

Dogs bark to communicate, but decoding the message can be tricky. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is there a perceived threat? Recognizing the reason behind barking is essential to managing it effectively.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

Dogs bark for specific reasons, and recognizing the cause is essential. Needs: Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside?

Attention: Are they bored or seeking interaction?

Alerts: Is someone at the door, or is there a perceived threat?

By observing your dog’s body language and listening carefully, you can begin to understand what they’re trying to communicate.

How you respond to barking can determine whether it becomes a persistent habit. If your dog barks because they want to play, ignoring the behaviour can help discourage it. Any attention-positive or negative-reinforces the barking. When barking serves a practical purpose, like alerting you to an empty water dish, it’s important to acknowledge and address it promptly.

Our instinct when a dog barks for attention is often to shush them or tell them to stop. However, whether you use soothing words or scolding, your reaction reinforces the behaviour. The barking got a response-exactly what your dog wanted. To break this cycle, ignore attention-seeking barking completely.

Last fall, a client’s Goldendoodle, Charlie, had two types of barking. She would bark at the door to alert the family of a potential security threat and also bark for attention. While the door barking was helpful, the attention-seeking barking became problematic. By consistently ignoring this behaviour, Charlie learned it wasn’t rewarded. Instead, quiet behaviour earned positive reinforcement. Over time, she stopped barking for attention, but her helpful door barking remained.

Tips to Manage Barking

Understand the Cause: Ask yourself, genuine need or testing boundaries?"

Stay Consistent: Avoid rewarding unnecessary barking. Even scolding reinforces the behaviour.

Redirect Behaviour: Engage your dog in a productive activity once they stop barking.

Reward Silence: Praise and reward quiet behaviour to encourage it in the future.

Barking is your dog’s way of communicating, but it doesn’t always require a response. By understanding why your dog barks and responding consistently, you can guide them toward more appropriate communication. With patience and clear boundaries, you’ll build a stronger bond with your dog while maintaining peace at home.

With these simple tools, dog training becomes more manageable, engaging, and successful. It’s not about replacing hands-on work — it’s about enhancing it. And hey, having a cool gadget in your toolkit doesn’t hurt either.

Pro Tip: Use tech to support, not replace, your bond-building time. Dogs learn best when training is

Grey Silo Veterinary Hospital:

A New Chapter in Compassionate Care

Located in one of Waterloo’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods, Grey Silo Veterinary Hospital was founded to bring high-quality, accessible care to local pet owners. Built on the trusted reputation of Laurelwood Veterinary Hospital, the team saw an opportunity to offer expanded services in a convenient new location—while maintaining the same compassionate approach they’re known for.

“We wanted Grey Silo to feel welcoming for both pets and people,” says Stephanie O’Neill, BA VOA, Hospital Manager. “From our reception area to our cozy exam rooms, everything is designed to reduce stress and promote healing.”

Proudly women-owned and operated, Grey Silo reflects the natural empathy and nurturing that defines modern veterinary care. The all-female team is known for its supportive, collaborative environment.

“Working with a team of strong, compassionate women is one of the most rewarding parts of this job,” O’Neill says. “We all share the same passion for animals and for the people who love them.”

Their motto—“treat every patient like family”—is more than just a guiding principle. Whether it’s warm blankets after surgery, extra cuddles, or reassuring words for nervous pet parents, the team delivers personal, heartfelt care at every visit.

Grey Silo offers a full spectrum of services including surgery, dentistry, in-house diagnostics, and 24/7 virtual care through Smart Vet. With the support of their sister clinic in Laurelwood, they can reduce wait times and accommodate urgent care quickly and efficiently.

“Clients love the flexibility between locations and the peace of mind that comes with quick access to diagnostics and care,” says O’Neill.

Deeply rooted in the community, Grey Silo sponsors local initiatives like the U19 Waterloo Ghosts Softball Team, the Betty Thompson Golf Classic, and upcoming fundraising for the Farley Foundation, which supports emergency pet care for low-income families.

“Knowing we make a difference is what keeps us going,” O’Neill reflects. “Whether we’re saving lives or easing suffering, we’re here because we care.”

Grey Silo Veterinary Hospital isn’t just a clinic—it’s a place where pets are treated like family, where care comes from the heart, and where community connections are as important as clinical outcomes.

IMPACTS OF Social Media & Smartphones ON OUR KIDS

As a practicing Canadian Family Physician, I have the privilege of getting to know the families I care for over their lifespan. I follow them through some of the best and worst parts of their lives, both medically and emotionally.

When I started speaking out about the impacts social media appeared to be having on my adolescent patients about two years ago, it was because I noticed a shift in how they were presenting to me. They were coming in with more severe depression and anxiety, more school refusal, terrible sleep, low motivation, and the inability to focus in ways I wasn’t used to seeing. Thoughts of suicide seem almost ubiquitious, beginning at younger ages. What did many of them have in common? They were

spending incredible amounts of time on their digital devices.

When I see kids, I now ask if we can look at their screentime together. It’s more common than not to see they are spending 5+ hours a day on social media sites- TikTok and Snapchat by far being the most popular. Notably, some of these kids do have a pre-existing condition that makes them more vulnerable to social media overuse (for example, social anxiety or mild ADHD). There is a narrative put forth by some to say social media is only a problem for kids who were ‘already atrisk’ in some way. And while I think there is validity to that, my question is- so what? If we have a large proportion of at-risk kids, of course we should address those

underlying risks… but should we not also protect them from factors, like social media, that exploit those risks?

Clinically, I find that once a child’s smartphone use has become problematic (i.e. it interferes with other important aspects of their daily living), it’s quite difficult to curb their compulsive use and it’s equally difficult to convince parents to place firmer boundaries. In my opinion, primary prevention (ie preventing harm vs reducing harm) is paramount. By educating parents and kids about a slow introduction to these technologies, as well as their risks, we can prevent a great deal of harm during what should be such an amazing time in their lives.

Alison Yeung MD, GP @thesmartphoneeffectmd

So… when is a child ready for their own smartphone, including access to the internet and social media apps? There is no easy answer to this question, but I’ve created a framework that I believe can help to guide parents in making the best decision for their child and their family- I call it the ‘5 R’s.’

1. What’s the REASON?

When your child begins asking for a phone, or you think they need a phone, begin with asking why. Most often, it’s for safety, or to allow your child to socialize with their peers. There are now many smartphone/watch alternatives on the market that can serve both of these purposes without giving your child access to more dangerous apps from the outset. Some options include Bark, Pinwheel, Gabb, and the Garmin Bounce watch. A “dumb phone” serves this purpose as well, although it doesn’t have tracking. I strongly recommend your child’s first device is not a smartphone.

You can also get creative by allowing some limited access to social media apps on your phone. These are all ways to give your child, and you, a gradual introduction to the online world.

2. Are They RESPONSIBLE?

Is your child attending school, and putting forth their best effort? Do they complete chores without a big fight? Could they speak for themselves at the doctor’s office, or order their own meal at a restaurant? How do you think they would care for their own phone?

These are some examples of basic responsibilities that should be prerequisite to smartphone ownership. If they are not currently responsible with their daily tasks and belongings they aren’t ready for a smartphone.

3. Are They RESPECTFUL?

Do they respect you, their teachers and their friends? Do they respect your boundaries around current technology like TV, video games and iPad time? If they already have trouble regulating here, a smartphone will be much more difficult.

Do you feel they will behave respectfully online? Have you had conversations about this?

4. Are They RISK-AWARE?

Is your child aware of online dangers like sextortion, pornography, online predators, location sharing etc? Can they truly appreciate these harms (which is different from reciting a list generated by ChatGPT)? Do they have an approach to how they would deal with such a situation?

This also requires you to be informed and really know the unique harms on each platform your child is asking to use. If you’re not ready to have these conversations with your child, then they aren’t ready for a smartphone.

5. Are They RESILIENT?

How does your child deal with peer pressure? Do they have a sense of who they are in the world, with real-life interests and activities? Will they be able to look at what they see online with skepticism? Do they already struggle with their mental health in a way that may make them more vulnerable to the pressures online?

This last point, tends to set the younger teens apart from the older teens. In my experience, prior to age 17, kids don’t have much skepticism about their experiences online. They lack insight into the impact their time online may be having on their mental and physical health. When I see patients in their late teens years or early 20’s, they have a different perspective. They may still struggle to regulate their use, but they are able to see the impact it has on them. And almost all of them tell me that it’s harmed them, and they will not be giving their future children access at such a young age.

So while there is always nuance, and every child is different, my general recommendation to parents is this: delay as long as you can, stay as informed as you can, model healthy use of technology, and enrich your child’s life as much as you can in the real world.

LET THE summer reading adventures BEGIN no sunscreen required

If you’re anything like me, you’re constantly on the lookout for books that’ll keep your kiddos entertained and off screens for at least a hot minute this summer. Whether you’ve got a busy little toddler, a curious grade-schooler, or a teen who’s “not really into reading” I’ve got you covered. This summer’s reading lineup is full of magic, mayhem, mystery, and heart. From the sweet wonder of Joanna Gaines’, The Wonder You See, to the laugh-out-loud Mermaids Are the Worst, to twisty page-turners like The Secret Library and Meet Me at Wonderland. This list will keep your crew reading from the sandbox to the backseat.

Middle Grade Readers Teens and Young Adults

The Girl in the Walls by

Written with short chapters and lots of white space, this book is great for teens who feel overwhelmed by big books. It’s emotional but super readable, and it sticks with you. Exploring tough stuff like trauma and feeling invisible, but with so much empathy and hope. A powerful read for your introspective teen.

Slugfest by Gordan Korman

A middle grade must. Think summer camp, pranks, epic rivalries, and fastpaced chaos. Korman always gets kids hooked, and this one’s no exception. Great for kids who need action from page one and love stories that feel like a movie playing in their head.

The Thirteen Doors of Black House by Laura

Meet Me at Wonderland by

A time-traveling romance meets theme park nostalgia. It’s fun, adventurous, and full of summer vibes. Perfect for the teen who’s in their rom-com era, this book is swoony in a totally wholesome way (think: teen crushes, not steamy chapters), so moms can breathe easy while their teens enjoy the ride.

This one gives spooky summer mystery, but in a totally kid-appropriate way. It’s got secret doors, strange happenings, and that kind of eerie charm kids love to read with a flashlight under the covers.

The Secret Library by Kekla Magoon

A total dream for bookworms. This one’s all about uncovering a magical library, hidden messages, and stories that literally come to life. Think Inkheart meets modern middle grade magic.

Toddler and Early Readers

The Wonder You See

This one’s a total heart-melter. It’s all about slowing down and noticing the everyday magic around us, something our littles are so good at reminding us to do. Perfect for winding down before bedtime or reading on a blanket in the backyard.

The Bear Out There by

A sweet, gentle story with soft forest vibes and a message about friendship and finding joy in the unexpected. Ideal for a quiet morning cuddle with your early reader.

Mermaids are the Worst by

Okay, this book is laugh-out-loud funny. It’s sassy, full of mythical creatures, and flips the “mean mermaid” trope in the best way. If your kiddo loved dragons or unicorns last month, mermaids are up next. And if you like this one, be sure to check out other books in this series like: Elves are the Worst, Unicorns are the Worst and Dragons are the Worst!

Beyond the Falls:

NA RICHER LOOK AT THE NIAGARA REGION

iagara may be known for its towering cascade, but beyond the mist and crowds lies a region layered with history, charm, and experiences that stretch well past the water’s edge. For those who venture just a little farther, Niagara reveals a quieter, more grounded character.

A Press, a Hero, and a Walk Through Time

In Queenston, the Mackenzie Printery & Newspaper Museum gives visitors a hands-on look at Canada’s early publishing history. Housed in the former home of William Lyon Mackenzie, the museum contains some of the oldest working printing presses in North America.

The Laura Secord Homestead pays tribute to one of Canada’s most quietly courageous figures. Inside the modest clapboard house, guides in period dress recount Laura’s daring 32-kilometre journey during the War of 1812. Her story becomes all the more powerful standing in the very rooms where she once lived.

Forest Trails and Hands-On History

Heartland Forest offers a peaceful contrast to Niagara’s tourist-heavy attractions. With wide, accessible trails and thoughtful touches like sensory gardens and children’s nature play zones, this forested area encourages both reflection and discovery.

The exhibits at the Niagara Falls History Museum trace everything from the geological formation of the falls to local stories of war and settlement. Visitors can try on a replica redcoat uniform, handle historical artifacts, and explore the lives behind the headlines.

Sipping and Strolling Through Heritage

Monastery Cellars offers a serene wine tasting experience rooted in tradition. Inside the stone tasting room, guests sample vintages that showcase Niagara’s unique terroir. A quiet afternoon here, with a glass of Syrah in hand, feels worlds away from the popular city centre.

For those drawn to military history, Old Fort Erie delivers a vivid look into Canada’s past. Set along the Niagara River, this site was central to the War of 1812. Reenactments, guided tours, and preserved architecture invite visitors to experience history up close, with echoes of cannon fire still faintly present in the air.

Farm-Fresh Flavours and Local Comfort

White Meadows Farms, especially during maple syrup season, smells of woodsmoke and warm sugar. Guests can explore the Sugar Bush trail, see how maple syrup is made, and sample products in the charming country store.

After a full day, Niagara’s local restaurants offer hearty, comforting fare. Weinkeller Restaurant pairs wines with dishes driven by local produce. Four Brothers Cucina keeps it simple and satisfying with classic Italian recipes and warm service. For pub lovers, Doc Magilligan’s Irish Pub & Restaurant brings cozy corners, live music, and traditional fare that feels like home.

Finding the Heart of Niagara Beyond the Falls

Exploring the Niagara Region away from the roar of the falls reveals a slower, more thoughtful side of this storied corner of Ontario. It’s a place where you can trace the footprints of Canadian heroes, feel the weight of early printing history, sip wine beside historic monastery walls, wander a battlefield that once shaped a nation, and taste the earthy sweetness of fresh maple syrup at a working farm. For travelers willing to look beyond the mist, the region offers something more personal, more textured, and ultimately more lasting.

From CMA Fest to Ruby Falls

A Mother-Daughter Music & Mountains Escape with

There’s something magical about Tennessee in June — the heart-pounding excitement of CMA Fest in Nashville, the soothing rhythm of scenic drives, and the hidden beauty of places like Ruby Falls in Chattanooga. The first week of June, my daughter and I packed our boots, playlists, and a sense of adventure for a girls’ getaway filled with music, sightseeing, and memory-making — made entirely seamless thanks to Booking.com.

SETTLING IN FOR THE WEEK

With CMA Fest drawing thousands each year, we booked later than planned and opted for Candlewood Suites Nashville –Metro Center, just minutes from downtown. The all-suite hotel had everything we needed — full kitchens, free parking, Wi-Fi, a 24-hour gym, and even complimentary laundry. Cozy, convenient, and pet-friendly, it made relaxing between concerts effortless.

CMA FEST

Our journey began in Nashville, just as CMA Fest was heating up. The streets were alive with the sounds of country music legends and up-and-comers, from the Nissan Stadium to the hidden gems of Broadway. But beyond the music, we wanted to explore the heart and history of Music City.

THE GRAND OLD OPRY

No visit to Nashville is complete without a stop at the legendary Grand Ole Opry — and our experience was one for the books. We were fortunate to celebrate Opry 100 with the Opry Media Team, attending a live recording that featured unforgettable performances by Justin Moore, Scotty McCreery, Colbie Caillat, and more. From the historic stage to the electric energy in the crowd, it was a true celebration of country music’s past, present, and future.

We booked all our activities directly through the Booking.com app, which made planning incredibly easy. I especially loved the ability to filter by price, review score, location, and category, helping us find the perfect experiences to match our schedule and budget.

OLD TOWN TROLLEY TOUR

The trolley gave us the best view of Nashville’s historic streets and landmarks, like the Parthenon, Ryman Auditorium, and Belmont Mansion.

COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME

The Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville is a mustvisit for music lovers, showcasing iconic memorabilia, historic recordings, and interactive exhibits. It celebrates the legends and evolution of country music, offering an unforgettable glimpse into the genre’s roots, rise, and cultural impact. A true Nashville landmark.

CHATTANOOGA & RUBY FALLS

After a whirlwind in Nashville, we hit the road for a peaceful detour to Chattanooga to visit a friend and experience the breathtaking Ruby Falls. This underground waterfall deep in Lookout Mountain is something every traveller should see once — it was pure magic.

Our Tennessee adventure was packed with fun, music, and unforgettable Mother and Daughter moments. Beyond the concerts and sightseeing, it was a reminder of how important it is to pause, soak in the present, and appreciate every passing day. These are the kinds of trips that strengthen the bonds we cherish most — the laughter, the late-night talks, the shared experiences — all creating memories that last far beyond the miles.
