Embrace the Moments We Are Given
Wow, how about all this snow we’ve been experiencing? I feel like I’ve spent more time with a shovel in hand than actually getting out and about this winter! This past Family Day weekend was meant for gathering, but a snowstorm—and the blowing snow that followed—had other plans.
Lately, I’ve taken an interest in searching for snowy owls, but with snow-drifted back roads, even that had to wait. Instead, I embraced the moment of being snowed in, safe at home. There’s something comforting about a snowstorm—the warmth, a hot cup of coffee or cocoa, and the peaceful silence outside. It’s a rare chance to slow down and do the

things we often neglect. My Family Day weekend turned into a mix of bingewatching, reminiscing over old photos, and organizing cupboards. By Tuesday morning, as the sun rose, I felt an unexpected sense of accomplishment.
Mother Nature has a way of reminding us that plans change, and sometimes we just have to adjust. Not everything needs to happen right now— most things can wait until tomorrow.
As you flip through this month’s issue of Living Local, I encourage you to take the time you need to relax, recharge, and embrace those slower moments. With plenty of content for everyone, we hope you enjoy the read. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and share how you spent your snowy days this month!

The Fine of Hanging ART
You know that feeling when you walk into a room, spot a crooked picture on the wall, and suddenly, you can’t focus on anything else? Your brain is not listening to anything anyone is saying and —before you know it, you’re reaching out to straighten it, even in a stranger’s home.
But crooked art isn’t the only offense that makes a decorator’s soul cry. Nothing sends me running for my toolkit faster than a tiny picture hanging awkwardly high on a massive wall, floating aimlessly like it lost its way.
art
Art is one of the most powerful design elements in a space, but strange placement can lose the effect faster than a toupee in a windstorm. So here are the basic rules you can use to pull your design together and make your walls look effortlessly polished. My famously simple phrase goes like this—small art for small walls, big art for big walls. It’s almost that simple.
A massive painting over a small sofa looks awkward and unbalanced. And a tiny frame lost on a sprawling wall? It calls for company and formation. The sweet spot is where the pieces feel grounded in groupings that make logical sense. Your artwork should be about ½ to ¾ the width of the sofa, fireplace mantel, bed frame, or wall it’s paired with. Usually, I take the furniture width, multiply it by 0.6, and then I look through my inventory for something close to that size to use.
The best way to make art feel intentional is to keep it around eye level—aka, where an average-height person would naturally look. Of course, exceptions exist! In dining rooms and bedrooms, where people are sitting or lounging, you can lower your artwork a bit to create a more intimate feel. Keep things evenly spaced and avoid frames hanging higher than the door frame.
Hellen Fidler
Some exceptions exist, I could not imagine putting a massive, gorgeous painting like Gustav Klimt ‘The Kiss’ on a wall with anything around it. That would make my eyes bleed. Some pieces get the space they deserve. Don’t clutter a large piece with too much furniture, busy carpets, or competing décor. Let it breathe and make the statement it was meant to make.
Design isn’t about strict formulas—it’s about how a space flows. Art is an expression of who you are, so if breaking a rule makes your space more you, then you do you Boo! But if you’re feeling lost, these simple guidelines will help you avoid any misfortunes and create a home that looks beautiful and purposeful.

The Benefits of Floor Warming
Damon Bennett @officaldamonbennett
When planning a bathroom renovation, homeowners often focus on aesthetics— choosing stylish tiles, modern fixtures, and elegant lighting. However, one upgrade that can significantly enhance comfort and functionality is floor warming. Also known as radiant floor heating, this system offers a range of benefits that make it a worthwhile investment.
ULTIMATE COMFORT AND WARMTH
One of the most compelling reasons to install floor warming is the luxurious warmth it provides. Stepping onto a cozy, heated floor on a cold morning is an unmatched experience. Unlike traditional forced-air heating systems that distribute

warmth unevenly, radiant floor heating delivers consistent and even heat throughout the space, eliminating cold spots.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND COST SAVINGS
Floor warming systems are more energy-efficient than traditional heating methods. They work by warming objects and people directly rather than heating the air, which reduces heat loss. Since heat naturally rises, floors stay warmer for longer, requiring less energy to maintain a comfortable temperature. Many homeowners find that they can lower their thermostat settings while still feeling warm, leading to reduced energy bills over time.
HEALTHIER INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Forced-air heating can stir up dust, allergens, and other airborne particles, which can aggravate allergies and respiratory issues. Radiant floor heating eliminates this problem by providing heat without the use of fans or ducts, leading to improved indoor air quality and a healthier living environment.
SPACE-SAVING AND AESTHETIC APPEAL
Traditional heating systems, such as baseboard heaters or radiators, take up valuable wall space and can limit design possibilities. Floor warming is completely hidden beneath the floor, freeing up space for a

clean, modern aesthetic. This allows for greater design flexibility, whether you want a minimalist look or a bathroom filled with custom features.
COMPATIBLE WITH VARIOUS FLOORING OPTIONS
Many people assume that radiant heating only works with tile floors, but modern systems are compatible with a variety of flooring materials, including stone, laminate, vinyl, and even engineered wood. This versatility makes it an excellent choice for any bathroom style.
INCREASED HOME VALUE
Adding floor warming can boost your home’s value and appeal to potential buyers. It is seen as a premium feature that adds comfort, efficiency, and modern luxury—making your home stand out in the market.

What you need to know about the Upcoming RRSP Deadline
A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is one of Canada’s most powerful tools for planning for your financial future. With the upcoming RRSP deadline approaching on March 3rd, here are five reasons to open one today:
ECU
A Division of WFCU Credit Union
YOU CAN BORROW FROM YOUR RRSP TO BUY YOUR FIRST HOME
Under the Home Buyers’ Plan (HBP), you can borrow up to $25,000 from your RRSP for a down payment on your first home. Bonus: If you pay the money back within the specified period of time, you won’t pay any tax on these withdrawals.
CONTRIBUTIONS ARE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE
The money you put into an RRSP is taxdeductible, reducing your annual taxable income. This contribution can result in a significant tax refund, depending on how much you contribute and your marginal tax rate.
YOUR SAVINGS GROW FOR USE DURING RETIREMENT
One of the biggest advantages of an RRSP is the ability to grow your investments tax-deferred. This means the money you contribute can grow without being taxed until you withdraw it from your RRSP, typically in retirement.
A SPOUSAL RRSP CAN REDUCE YOUR COMBINED TAX BURDEN
If you earn more money than your spouse, you can help build their tax-free savings by contributing to a spousal RRSP. The result is that retirement income is more equally split between the two of you — which may reduce the total amount of tax you pay.
RETIREMENT SECURITY
The primary purpose of an RRSP is to help Canadians save for retirement. By contributing regularly to an RRSP, you build a nest egg that can provide financial security in your later years.
In summary, opening an RRSP can provide significant tax benefits, help you save for retirement, and offer flexible investment options for your portfolio. The sooner you start working with a wealth professional and contributing to an RRSP, the more money you’ll have when it’s time to retire.

AA kitchen renovation can be such an exciting and rewarding project—it’s a chance to completely transform one of the most important spaces in your home. Not only will it bring beauty and functionality, but it can also add lasting value. That said, it’s definitely a big investment, and with so many choices to make, it’s easy to feel both overwhelmed and a little nervous. Whether you’re updating a dated space or finally creating your dream kitchen, I’ve gathered some of my best tips to help guide you through the process and make your renovation journey a little easier.
Do your homework Before diving too deep into the ‘pretty’ part of your kitchen design, it’s essential to assess how you want to use your kitchen. Think about your cooking habits, who uses the space, what works and what doesn’t, how often you entertain, and who gathers in the space. Are you looking for a more open layout for socializing, or do you prefer defined spaces for cooking and dining? I like to recommend my clients do a mock run through of a typical day in their kitchen. Where would you ideally like your spices, oils, pans, dishes? What items do you access frequently? Really getting an understanding of your lifestyle and functional needs will help guide decisions about layout, storage, and appliances. Make a long list and reference this throughout the process.
Get clear on your style from the start! Kitchens offer so many design options, and it’s common for many to struggle with defining their style. To avoid costly changes later, we always work with our clients early on to nail down their aesthetic. One great way to start is by creating mood boards with photos, colors, and inspirations that set the tone. If you’re unsure about your style, try using Pinterest to collect images of kitchens you love. Then, ask yourself what you’re drawn to—whether it’s the colors, textures, or lighting. You’ll start to notice patterns that reveal your style. Choose the right materials. Selecting materials that align with your design vision and lifestyle is crucial. Consider durability, maintenance, and style when choosing countertops, cabinets, and flooring. For example, quartz countertops offer durability and easy maintenance, while hardwood floors can exude warmth. It’s wise to choose materials that not only match your aesthetic but can withstand the rigors of a busy kitchen. Always ensure you ask questions about durability and upkeep before making a final decision.
Don’t forget about your lighting. Lighting plays a significant role in a kitchen’s functionality and atmosphere. Ensure there is a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Overhead fixtures or pendant lights can provide general illumination, while under-cabinet lights offer focused light for food preparation. Dimmer switches can enhance the mood during gatherings, making your kitchen more versatile.
A Kitchen Renovation is an opportunity to craft a space that truly reflects your style and enhances the heart of your home.
Budget wisely. This one goes without saying but important to remember… Kitchen renovations can be costly. Period. And throughout your renovation you will be faced with hundreds of decisions that will ultimately impact your final costs. Overall size (square footage), material selection (i.e. quartz vs marble), level of customization and labour are the biggest factors that will impact the range of your costs. Use your functional needs to prioritize what matters most to you and allocate your funds accordingly. Remember to leave room for unforeseen expenses, typically around 10 - 20% of your total budget.
Consider (and be realistic) with your timeline. Early in your process you will want to start to think about what professionals are going to help support you bring your vision to life and get a clear understanding of their timeline. Most kitchens take several weeks to months to design with a typical lead time between final decision to installation of 8 - 12 weeks. When you consider demolition, permitting, countertop installation, etc you will want to assume a kitchen renovation will take upwards of 6 to 12 months to fully execute from the point you start dreaming, to your reveal party. Given the size of investment, don’t rush and pick the cabinet maker who can do it fastest – it will be worth the wait to find the right partner!
Embarking on a kitchen renovation is more than just a project—it’s an opportunity to craft a space that truly reflects your style and enhances the heart of your home. By carefully considering your needs, setting a realistic budget, thoughtfully selecting materials, and partnering with the right professionals, you’ll lay the foundation for a seamless transformation.
The KEY to a successful renovation is a blend of meticulous planning and intentional execution, ensuring your dream kitchen becomes a stunning and functional reality.

Transform Your Kitchen
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR A STYLISH & FUNCTIONAL SPACE
The kitchen is the heart of the home, where family and friends gather to cook, eat, and share. An ideal kitchen is both beautiful & functional.
Open-concept kitchens remain popular, enhancing interaction and visibility. Before remodeling, consult a professional to ensure structural feasibility. Working islands add counter space, storage, and seating. If you have a peninsula, you may have room for an island. The work triangle— stovetop, sink, and refrigerator— optimizes workflow. Proper lighting is key, with pot lights for even illumination, undercabinet LEDs for ambiance, and pendant lights for style.
Simple upgrades can give your space a fresh look. Replacing cabinet hardware with gold or black creates an instant transformation. Countertops influence both style and functionality—granite, quartz, and Corian offer lowmaintenance durability, while laminate is a budget-friendly
choice. Painting cabinets is an economical way to update your kitchen, with classic white remaining a favourite, while blues, greens, and deep hues are growing in popularity.
Adding a new backsplash can enhance character subway tiles offer a timeless appeal, while patterned tiles introduce a bold touch. Structural improvements further enhance your kitchen. Extending upper cabinets to the ceiling adds storage and elegance, especially with glass panels and lighting. Pots and pan drawers improve organization, and a stylish range hood elevates design and

function. Small yet impactful additions, such as pull-out spice racks and hidden garbage bins, increase efficiency, while concealed appliances free up counter space.
A full renovation isn’t always necessary for a better kitchen flow. Consulting a professional can help identify improvements within your budget. Define your needs, plan wisely, and enjoy the transformation!

Counter surfing —jumping up to grab food off the counter common issue. Many dogs quickly learn that tasty rewards can be found in the kitchen, making this behaviour self-reinforcing. The good news? With the right strategy, you can prevent it and teach your dog better habits.
MANAGE THE ENVIRONMENT
The first and most effective step is prevention. Dogs repeat behaviours that get them rewards, so if they’ve ever snatched food off the counter, they’ll try again. The solution? Remove the temptation. Keep counters clear of food, wipe up crumbs, and push items out of reach. If there’s nothing to steal, there’s no reason to jump. If your dog counter surfs for attention rather than food, the best approach is to ignore them completely. Any reaction—even scolding—can reinforce the behaviour. Instead, stay neutral and avoid engaging. Over time, they’ll realize counter surfing gets them nothing.
“By removing the opportunity, reinforcing positive behaviours, and setting clear boundaries, your dog will learn that keeping all four paws on the floor is the way to go”

Why Do Dogs Bark? Understanding Your Pup’s Most Common Behaviour
Jack Donovan, thedogcoach.ca
Jack Donovan, thedogcoach.ca
Dogs bark to communicate, but decoding the message can be tricky. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is there a perceived threat? Recognizing the reason behind barking is essential to managing it effectively.
Why Do Dogs Bark?
Dogs bark for specific reasons, and recognizing the cause is essential. Needs: Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside?
Attention: Are they bored or seeking interaction?
Alerts: Is someone at the door, or is there a perceived threat?
By observing your dog’s body language and listening carefully, you can begin to understand what they’re trying to communicate.
How you respond to barking can determine whether it becomes a persistent habit. If your dog barks because they want to play, ignoring the behaviour can help discourage it. Any attention-positive or negative-reinforces the barking. When barking serves a practical purpose, like alerting you to an empty water dish, it’s important to acknowledge and address it promptly.
Our instinct when a dog barks for attention is often to shush them or tell them to stop. However, whether you use soothing words or scolding, your reaction reinforces the behaviour. The barking got a response-exactly what your dog wanted. To break this cycle, ignore attention-seeking barking completely.
Last fall, a client’s Goldendoodle, Charlie, had two types of barking. She would bark at the door to alert the family of a potential security threat and also bark for attention. While the door barking was helpful, the attention-seeking barking became problematic. By consistently ignoring this behaviour, Charlie learned it wasn’t rewarded. Instead, quiet behaviour earned positive reinforcement. Over time, she stopped barking for attention, but her helpful door barking remained.
Tips to Manage Barking
Understand the Cause: Ask yourself, "Why is my dog barking? Is it a genuine need or testing boundaries?"
Stay Consistent: Avoid rewarding unnecessary barking. Even scolding reinforces the behaviour.
Redirect Behaviour: Engage your dog in a productive activity once they stop barking.
Reward Silence: Praise and reward quiet behaviour to encourage it in the future.
Barking is your dog’s way of communicating, but it doesn’t always require a response. By understanding why your dog barks and responding consistently, you can guide them toward more appropriate communication. With patience and clear boundaries, you’ll build a stronger bond with your dog while maintaining peace at home.
With consistency, you’ll have a well-mannered pup and a stressfree kitchen in no time!

DIY Floral Arrangements
Cheerful injections of Colour
An easy way to perk up your home is by adding elements of colour with your accessories. An easy switch is adding some fresh covers on your throw pillows, adding a cozy throw blanket for a pop of colour, or switching up your artwork. These little changes will go a long way in livening up your home.
Cute Heart patterned pillow covers (set of 2, 6 colour$24.99options)
Our local grocers & markets have an abundance of fresh florals and greens available to us. Making your own beautiful arrangements is not only easy, it’s a fun little project to cheer up your day. Flowers instantly brighten our homes, and bring in a summer feel. Pick out your favorite colours and varieties and some fresh greens, and you’re all set. Little bud vases not only look cute and fresh in any area of your home, they also make great little gifts.
There are so many unique and affordable vases and vessels to choose from to really suit your mood & decor.
You’ll need:
• Greens (such as eucalyptus pictured here)
• A bunch (or two) of your favorite floral varieties such as roses, daisies or carnations.
• Feel free to add baby’s breath or other accents to your liking.
Start by filling your vase with fresh water (can add flower food included for a boost of nutrients)
For an easy hack, you can use scotch tape to create a grid on your vase then fill in the open areas with your flowers.
Begin to fill your vase with greenery by trimming to desired length and filling up the perimeter of your vase. Using gentle pressure you can softly bend the branches resulting in the greens falling beautifully over the vase.
Trim your florals under running water and start adding the tallest focal flowers first to create a base.
Then add in the remaining flowers until full.
You can tweak and move things around to your liking
Keep your flowers fresh by changing water and trimming stems under water every few days.
As flowers begin to fully bloom over the following days the arrangement only becomes more beautiful!
