Editor’s NOTE
Well, it’s been one hot summer, but as we start to feel that refreshing cool down in the evening air, we know it’s time to get back into the school year rhythm.
That means returning to routines, packing lunches (page 22), signing up for activities and maybe even navigating those big decisions about kids and smartphones (page 21).
We know there’s a bit of anxiety for everyone as we head into a new school year, and you’re definitely not alone (page 20).
We’re also thrilled to announce that our next issue will debut our brand new Arts and Culture section! Huge thanks to Helen Fidler and Betty Anne Keller for bringing this vibrant addition to our reader’s tables.
And as we move into fall, remember that Waterloo Region and Wellington County have a vast array of events ahead. It’s all about “the art of showing up”(page 16) Whether at a local festival, a community gathering, or just enjoying the new season’s harvest, there is always plenty to see and do in our region.
Plus, we can’t forget to mention Craig Silva’s article on the Fields and Flavours Trail (page 29), a must-read for anyone looking to savour the local scene.
We hope that everyone had a fantastic summer, creating memories with family and friends that you’ll cherish as we move into this new season. Thanks for being part of our Living Local family!

Back-to-School Mudrooms
ORGANIZED, STYLISH & SANITY-SAVING
As summer winds down & the back-to-school chaos begins to stir, there’s one space in your home that can be an absolute game-changer: the mudroom.
I still remember building one of our homes when I had two schoolaged kids and was pregnant with my third. During the design process, I suggested swapping the typical foyer closet for a walkin. My husband hesitated, but I stood firm. With backpacks, jackets, lunch bags, and sports gear piling up, I needed a dedicated drop zone — somewhere everything had its place. That simple walk-in turned out to be a lifesav-
er and, in many ways, the start of my love affair with mudrooms.
Fast forward to today, and mudrooms have become staples in modern homes — and for good reason. Whether it’s a full room, a nook off the garage, or just a blank wall, there’s always potential to create one.
If you’ve got a space that isn’t living up to its potential — like a little-used home office or laundry room corner — consider a transformation. Add cubbies or shelving for shoes, bins for hats and mitts, hooks for backpacks, and a bench for easy access. Want to hide the clutter? Go with cab-

inet doors or built-ins for a sleek, closed-off look.
Even a small wall can do wonders with a bit of DIY magic — think shiplap, hooks, floating shelves, and a bench with storage below. Or convert an existing closet by removing the doors and adding shelving and hooks to give it new life.
No matter your space, a well-designed mudroom helps streamline the school-day shuffle — turning everyday chaos into calm, functional flow.

THE ELEVATED BATH
The bathroom, often underestimated, holds immense potential as one of the most transformative spaces in a home. More than just a functional area, it’s where routines are set, where we unwind and recharge, and where the intersection of design and utility can create a truly meaningful experience. Renovating a bathroom isn’t just about aesthetics or upgrades it’s an opportunity to reshape how you live and feel every single day.
Whether you’re refreshing a modest powder room or undertaking a full overhaul of a primary ensuite, the right design approach can dramatically improve flow, comfort, and ambiance while also adding measurable value to your property.
Design with Your Lifestyle in Mind
The most successful bathroom renovations begin with a clear understanding of how you use the space. Are you looking for a serene environment to decompress in the evenings, or do you need an efficient, energizing start to your day? Design should respond directly to your lifestyle.
For example, if long showers are your ritual, consider adding features like a built-in bench, rain shower head, or even a steam function. If you gravitate toward the tranquility of a bath, a sculp-
Designing a Personal
Sanctuary
tural tub—freestanding and beautifully positioned—can become the centerpiece of the room and a daily reminder to slow down.
Establish a Cohesive Visual Language
A well-designed bathroom should feel like an extension of your home’s overall aesthetic. Rather than chasing trends, choose finishes that offer lasting appeal. Timeless elements such as natural stone, matte metals, and clean-lined fixtures tend to wear beautifully and age with grace.
Cabinetry is one of the most impactful design decisions in a bathroom. In my design projects, I often turn to solid hardwoods like maple and birch for their resilience in humid environments. Quality materials ensure the room not only looks elevated but performs beautifully over time.
Function First: Ventilation and Layout
A space may look stunning, but if it doesn’t function well behind the scenes, the illusion quickly fades. Effective ventilation is critical. A high-efficiency exhaust fan preserves your finishes and prevents the moisture buildup that can lead to mold and deterioration—especially crucial in smaller or windowless bathrooms.
Olivia Bailey, Creative Director and Principal of Olivia Bailey Interiors, oliviabaileydesign.com
Invest in the Base Layer: Flooring
Your choice of flooring must balance safety and sophistication. Non-slip options like honed ceramic, textured porcelain, or brushed stone offer traction without sacrificing elegance. Smaller format tiles enhance grip and allow for more creative layout options in compact spaces, while large-scale wall tiles create a sense of openness and calm. In tighter bathrooms, don’t shy away from durable vinyl wall coverings—they’re an excellent way to introduce pattern, warmth, or texture while maintaining easy care.
Radiant Heating: A Small Luxury with Big Impact
Heated floors have become an expected feature in higher-end bathroom renovations—and for good reason. Radiant heating offers consistent warmth, reduces condensation, and is surprisingly energy-efficient. When paired with smart thermostat controls, it becomes a background luxury that enhances everyday living.
Lighting That Elevates
Lighting is integral to both the functionality and mood of a bathroom. A layered scheme works best—think ambient lighting to wash the room with general light, paired with task lighting at mirrors for precision. Accent lights, like under-cabinet strips or a sculptural pendant, add drama and elegance while providing depth and dimension to the design.
Smart Features for Everyday Ease
Today’s bathrooms can quietly integrate technology that streamlines routines. From mirrors with built-in defoggers and lighting to programmable showers and motion-sensor fixtures, tech should enhance your space without dominating it.
One standout Canadian brand that merges design with function is VOGT. Their beautifully engi-
neered fixtures particularly the Mond collection combine customization with clean lines and reliable performance. The ability to choose finishes and handle accents gives you much flexibility without compromising on quality.
A Note on Scale and Proportion
Proportions matter. In smaller bathrooms, oversized tubs or vanities can overwhelm the room. A well-designed walk-in shower can feel just as indulgent while maximizing floor space. Floating vanities and wall-mounted faucets can make a tight layout feel more open while simplifying cleaning and maintenance.
Final Touches That Matter
Once the big pieces are in place, elevate the space with thoughtful, tactile details: sculptural accessories, and layered textures. Built-in storage like niches in the shower, slim drawers in vanities, or custom shelving helps eliminate clutter, reinforcing the feeling of calm and control.
Pro Tip:
Prioritize quality over quantity. Instead of overfilling the space, focus on fewer, better elements whether it’s artisanal tile, custom millwork, or a standout fixture. Each piece should earn its place.
A bathroom renovation is more than a checklist of upgrades it’s an invitation to elevate the everyday. With thoughtful planning, attention to detail, and a clear vision, this often-overlooked room can become your home’s most personal and indulgent retreat.

Why Do Dogs Bark?
(AND YOUR WHOLE FAMILY)
for Back-to-School Season
Understanding Your Pup’s Most Common Behaviour
Jack Donovan, thedogcoach.ca
Jack Donovan, thedogcoach.ca
Dogs bark to communicate, but decoding the message can be tricky. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is there a perceived threat? Recognizing the reason behind barking is essential to managing it effectively.
Why Do Dogs Bark?
Dogs bark for specific reasons, and recognizing the cause is essential. Needs: Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside?
ack-to-School season isn’t just about getting the kids back into a routine—it’s about everyone finding their rhythm again, including your dog. When the lazy days of summer shift into the rush of early mornings, packed schedules, and after-school activities, our furry family members can be left wondering where all the attention went. This sudden change can leave them bored, anxious, and looking for mischief—whether that’s chewing shoes, rummaging through backpacks, or shredding homework before the teacher ever sees it.
Attention: Are they bored or seeking interaction?
Alerts: Is someone at the door, or is there a perceived threat?
By observing your dog’s body language and listening carefully, you can begin to understand what they’re trying to communicate.
How you respond to barking can determine whether it becomes a persistent habit. If your dog barks because they want to play, ignoring the behaviour can help discourage it. Any attention-positive or negative-reinforces the barking. When barking serves a practical purpose, like alerting you to an empty water dish, it’s important to acknowledge and address it promptly.
ADD MENTAL STIMULATION
When your focus shifts to homework help or making dinner, give your dog a “job” to do. Lick mats, puzzle feeders, or a Kong stuffed with wet food or peanut butter can keep them engaged and mentally challenged. Mental exercise is just as important as physical, and it can tire them out in the best way.
SHORT, DAILY PLAY SESSIONS
You don’t need hours—a quick 10–15 minutes of fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek can go a long way. Indoors, try tossing a piece of kibble over their shoulder after asking for a “sit”—it works their brain and burns energy.
Our instinct when a dog barks for attention is often to shush them or tell them to stop. However, whether you use soothing words or scolding, your reaction reinforces the behaviour. The barking got a response-exactly what your dog wanted. To break this cycle, ignore attention-seeking barking completely.
KEEP A ROUTINE FOR EVERYONE
Last fall, a client’s Goldendoodle, Charlie, had two types of barking. She would bark at the door to alert the family of a potential security threat and also bark for attention. While the door barking was helpful, the attention-seeking barking became problematic. By consistently ignoring this behaviour, Charlie learned it wasn’t rewarded. Instead, quiet behaviour earned positive reinforcement. Over time, she stopped barking for attention, but her helpful door barking remained.
Kids need a schedule to thrive, and so do dogs. Try to keep walk, feeding, and playtimes consistent—even on weekends. If the morning walk is at 7:00
Tips to Manage Barking
during the week, stick to that on Saturdays too. Predictability helps your dog feel secure and reduces stress from sudden changes.
Understand the Cause: Ask yourself, "Why is my dog barking? Is it a genuine need or testing boundaries?"
Avoid rewarding unnecessary barking. Even scolding reinforces the behaviour.
Redirect Behaviour: Engage your dog in a productive activity once they stop barking.
Praise and reward quiet behaviour to encourage it in
TRAIN IN CALM MOMENTS
Practise walks and obedience when life isn’t hectic. This way, your dog learns good habits in a low-pressure setting and is better prepared for busier, more distracting times.
By treating Back-to-School as a time for the whole family to reset routines—including your fourlegged friend—you can help your dog adjust smoothly, stay active, and avoid those “homework got eaten” moments.
Barking is your dog’s way of communicating, but it doesn’t always require a response. By understanding why your dog barks and responding consistently, you can guide them toward more appropriate communication. With patience and clear boundaries, you’ll build a stronger bond with your dog while maintaining peace at

Do Kids Really Need SMARTPHONES?
Alison Yeung MD, GP | @thesmartphonee ectmd
As back-to-school season rolls in, many parents find themselves asking: Does my child need a phone to stay safe or feel included? For many, that answer leads to buying a smartphone.
What often follows is a dive into social media—TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram—opening the door to online predators, inappropriate content, and constant pressure to look or act a certain way. These apps are built to manipulate the brain’s reward system, making it easy for kids to become hooked.
Half of kids have smartphones by age 11. By high school, it’s 90%. A 2023 study found teens spend over 4.5 hours a day on social media—and more than half use it between midnight and 5 a.m.
Some kids are more vulnerable—especially those with anxiety, ADHD, perfectionist traits, or low self-esteem. But no child is truly immune, especially when introduced before puberty. A tough week at school or a falling-out with friends can send them searching for comfort online, only to be bombarded with content that feeds their sadness.
The results? Rising rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and even suicide— especially since smartphones and social media became widespread around 2012. Schools are seeing lower motivation and declining academic performance.
In my Kitchener family practice, most teen mental health visits involve excessive screen use. And once kids are hooked, parents often feel helpless to pull back.
But it’s not too late. Delay smartphones and social media as long as possible—ideally until 15 or older. Consider simpler devices without internet. Many devices like watches and phones now exist with no internet browser or access to addictive apps. Home phones are also making a comeback! Focus on building real-life hobbies, friendships, and confidence.
Will they feel left out? Maybe. But I’ve never met a parent who said, “I wish I gave them a smartphone sooner.”
Waiting is worth it.

Art The of Showing Up
Have you wondered why some people seem to live their lives to the fullest? They sparkle with energy and effortlessly engage, always having something interesting to talk about. I notice these types of people all have a gift for showing up.
I found joy in the experience of getting out to some incredible events and meeting the makers at Arts and Crafts Markets this summer. These vibrant, culturally rich events not only enhance our lives but also give us a way to connect with creative small business owners who help our community thrive.
Some of the events that really intrigued me were the night markets. Under the glow of Edison bulbs and stars, you could buy art, listen to music, and engage in mind-opening conversations. Vincent Marcone, a Juno and Emmy award-winning artist known as My Pet Skeleton, hosted the KW Night Market Cryptids and Curios in August. The event was a huge success, showcasing not only his incredibly talented works but also a full collection of other gifted artists and makers. If you missed it, don’t forget to check out My Pet Skeleton’s website to see his award-winning pieces. my-pet-skeleton.myshopify.com
Another Night Market favourite was Pretty Dope Soap, a booth you could smell from afar and appreciate up close. Heidi found herself with extra time as her eldest child moved out and her youngest split time between households. What began as a fun way to experiment with colours, designs, and scents quickly grew into something bigger. Committed to crafting products that feel

If you’re ready to burst with laughter, smell some excitement, and tickle all your senses, it may be time to venture out to one of these upcoming events.

DISCOVERING LOCAL TASTE
ON THE FIELDS & FLAVOURS TRAIL
Craig Silva @bigdaddykreativ
Just outside Waterloo, the air smells a little sweeter. Wildflowers line the roads, and the late morning sun warms patchwork fields. The Fields & Flavours Trail winds through the region, connecting you with farm visits, country kitchens, small-batch distilleries, and the stories behind each bite.
This isn’t about rushing. It’s about slowing down, meeting alpacas, talking to cheesemakers, sipping gin at its source, and tasting fruit off the tree. It’s a trail for curiosity, conversation, and a closer connection to where food comes from.
THE FARMERS’ MARKETS OF WATERLOO REGION
The St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market is a buzzing hub of local flavour and community spirit. Vendors offer warm apple fritters, summer berries, and smoked meats. Mennonite farmers arrive by buggy, selling preserves and baked goods made with old family recipes. You’ll also find artisan crafts, kitchen staples, and ingredients from every corner of the world, all grounded in the region’s agricultural roots.
To better understand the quiet rhythms of the countryside, be sure to catch The Mennonite Story in St. Jacobs Village. This short video presentation offers insight into the faith, history, and traditions of the Mennonite people, many of whom still farm in the region today. That context enriches the Country Tour & Wagon Ride that follows, where a wagon pulled by a tractor winds past tidy gardens, grazing horses, and well-kept farms.
The Kitchener Market has been a gathering place for over 150 years, combining bright indoor energy with a mix of global cuisine and local harvest. Saturdays bring a lively crowd, drawn by Jerk chicken, Turkish baklava, Ontario apples, and fresh produce.
The Cambridge Farmers’ Market offers a quieter, more traditional feel in its historic limestone building near the Grand River. Many vendors have been there for generations, offering fresh produce, deli meats, cheeses, and baked goods.
EXPLORING CULINARY AND FARM EXPERIENCES
Schmidtsville Restaurant in Wellesley is renowned for its warm, family-friendly atmosphere, with a hearty breakfast and lunch menu. Puddicombe House in New Hamburg offers an elegant dining experience set within a beautifully restored 1868 heritage building. Known for its sophisticated menu and impeccable service, it’s a favourite spot for special occasions and romantic dinners.
Experience the Alpaca Walk at the farm, a peaceful and delightful activity. Paired with friendly alpacas, visitors stroll through forest paths and meadows, learning about the animals and the farm’s focus on agritourism and wellness. The alpacas, known for their curiosity and calm demeanor, add a touch of joy to the experience. After the walk, guests can feed the alpacas and explore a small

shop offering preserves, alpaca-fibre goods, goat milk ice cream, and various types of goat milk cheese.
Set on a peaceful 1860s farmstead, The Perth Farmhouse offers a relaxed tasting experience amid rural Ontario’s natural beauty. Guests are invited to unwind during a 90-minute self-guided Sip ‘n Graze featuring wines, ciders, and grazing boxes filled with local cheese, charcuterie, and fresh accompaniments. Afterward, visitors can mingle with the farm’s miniature goats that add a playful touch to this charming blend of flavour and farmland.
Evenings are best spent at Willibald Farm, a family-run distillery, brewery, and restaurant near Ayr. Take a short tour, then enjoy dinner on the patio — maybe a fresh salad, handmade pizza, or a charcuterie plate to share — paired with house-distilled gin or a crisp IPA. The golden light over the fields adds its own flavour to the meal.
For plant lovers, Silver Creek Nursery near Wellesley is a peaceful stop. Known for heritage fruit trees and edible perennials, the nursery is a quiet place to wander and ask questions, and maybe leave with a sapling to grow your own trail memory at home.
Fall Harvest Farm in St. Agatha blends rustic charm with deep-rooted tradition. This family-run farm uses antique equipment and time-honoured methods passed down through generations. With a wide variety of pumpkins, fresh-picked produce, and locally made goods, it offers a warm, authentic taste of rural life.
THE TRAIL THAT FEEDS MORE THAN HUNGER
The Fields & Flavours Trail isn’t about checking off stops; it’s about experiencing them. Meeting the people behind the produce. Tasting something grown just steps away. Letting fresh air and good food reset your pace. In Waterloo Region, the farm is always close, and every bite tells a story worth savouring.

Parents, Help Your Kids With Back To School Anxiety
As parents, it can be challenging to watch our children struggle to adjust to a new environment, teachers, and classmates. We need to make time and advocate for our kids, as we are their whole world and often seen as their protectors. This can feel like a heavy responsibility.
We are not alone — we have access to many resources and support systems, whether it’s our child’s teacher, a therapist, or a friend. Reaching out may be the
hardest part, but it’s an important first step.
Children can show a wide range of anxiety symptoms, such as sweating during presentations or group work, difficulty focusing in class, refusing to attend school or specific classes, or feeling overwhelmed in group settings. These symptoms are not limited to those examples and may also appear as behavioral changes, physical or cognitive issues, or emotional responses.
As parents, we notice these changes, and sometimes we may feel helpless when trying to support our child through these challenges. To better understand the anxiety our children may be experiencing, we can ask short, open-ended questions, invite them to draw what they’re feeling, explore it through their favorite games, or encourage them to tell a story about their emotions.
We can also help them slow down racing thoughts by guiding a simple mindfulness activity: invite them to sit in a comfortable position, take three deep breaths, and then ask what they see, hear, smell, and taste — encouraging them to describe each sensation in a couple of words while taking slow breaths between each one. Practicing this mindfulness exercise once a week as part of their routine can make a difference. It is a gentle tool that can help redirect their thoughts and ease some of the anxiety they may be feeling.

Summer Skin Reset Your Post-Sun
Glow Revival
Audrey Moir Owner, SPAudrey
The golden days of summer are full of memories — sunlit beaches, warm evenings, and radiant selfies. But while your spirit may feel revived, your skin has likely weathered more than just good vibes. UV exposure, heat, humidity, and sunscreen buildup can leave your complexion dull, dehydrated, and uneven.
It’s time for a post-summer skin reset — a gentle but powerful way to restore balance, smoothness, and glow as we transition into the cooler months.
DEEP CLEAN & DETOX
Summer can leave a film of sweat, SPF residue, and environmental impurities on your skin. Begin with a professional deep cleanse or enzyme exfoliation to clear congestion without stripping your natural oils. At home, switch to a pH-balanced cleanser and incorporate a gentle exfoliant twice a week to sweep away dead skin cells.
PRO TIP: Avoid harsh scrubs — your skin barrier may already be stressed from UV exposure. Think polish, not punish.
HYDRATION OVERHAUL
Sun and saltwater can deplete your skin’s water reserves. Layer a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid under a rich, barrier-repairing moisturizer to lock in moisture. Spa insider secret: A post-summer hydrating facial infuses skin with active ingredients like peptides and antioxidants, giving you that “plumped from within” look in a single session.
FADE THE SUN’S FOOTPRINTS
Even with diligent sunscreen use, a summer tan can come with unwelcome pigmentation spots. Introduce a vitamin C serum in the morning and niacinamide or gentle retinoids at night to even out tone. In-clinic options like laser pigmentation removal or microneedling can dramatically boost results.
BOOST YOUR BARRIER
Your skin barrier is your first line of defense — and after summer, it may be compromised. Look for ceramide-rich creams and avoid over-exfoliating. If your skin feels tight or sensitive, take a two-week “skin diet” break from strong activities and focus solely on hydration and protection.
DON’T DITCH THE SPF
Cooler air doesn’t mean UV rays disappear. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is still non-negotiable — especially if you’re treating pigmentation or using exfoliating actives.
Think of your post-summer skincare as a gentle rehabilitation program: restore, hydrate, and protect. Your skin has been your co-pilot through long, sunny days — now’s the time to give it the luxury treatment it deserves.
