Creating Balance and Harmony for the Perfect Outdoor Oasis
Transform your backyard into an extension of your home during the warm summer months. With thoughtful planning and a balanced layout, you can create a seamless flow between indoor comfort and outdoor relaxation. Follow these guidelines to design an aesthetically pleasing and highly functional outdoor retreat.
START WITH A FOCAL POINT
Choose a central feature—such as a fire pit, water fountain, or outdoor kitchen—and build your layout around it. A well-defined focal point brings cohesion and purpose to your outdoor space. Use this as your central axis and mirror furniture, plants, colours and accessories on either side to bring symmetry to your design.
DEFINE HOW YOU’LL USE THE SPACE
Consider how you plan to enjoy your backyard and break up large areas into distinct functional zones:
• Entertaining guests
• Dining al fresco
• Lounging or sunbathing
• Cooking outdoors
Your intended use will influence the furniture you choose and how you arrange it, as well as adding dimension and encourages movement throughout the space.
PLAN FOR FLOW AND ACCESSIBILITY
Allow 30” to 48” of clearance for high-traffic paths and no less than 24” for low-traffic zones.
Place the longest piece of furniture along a wall or edge facing your focal point to anchor the space and create balance.
OUTDOOR KITCHEN & BBQ PLACEMENT
Keep cooking areas separate from seating for both safety and comfort. Locate your kitchen or BBQ near the indoor kitchen for easy access and convenience.
LAYER WITH DÉCOR
I like to add some personality and warmth with outdoor accessories such as:
• Planters and greenery
• Fresh florals
• Pillows and throws
• String lighting, lanterns and candles
These elements create ambiance and help soften harder surfaces, making your backyard feel like a true extension of your home.
Adding symmetry to your design brings visual harmony to your outdoor space, perfect for a sense of peace and relaxation. Of course, you can implement asymmetry with uneven shapes and sizes to provide a less formal sense of balance - or a combination of both to create an interesting and dynamic design scheme. Whatever your preference, your own personal touch will make your backyard oasis uniquely yours!

Why Pergolas Are the Must-Have Backyard Feature This Summer
THE OUTDOOR TREND TAKING CANADIAN BACKYARDS BY STORM
As warmer weather rolls in and homeowners across Canada prepare to soak up the season, one outdoor design trend is stealing the spotlight: pergolas. From suburban yards and cottages pergolas have become more than a backyard luxury—they’re now a must-have feature for stylish and functional outdoor living.
The surge in interest isn’t just a fleeting trend. Instead, it’s part of a larger shift toward outdoor living that’s been reshaping how we use our homes. Since the pandemic, Canadians have reimagined their properties as personal sanctuaries, with outdoor spaces becoming key zones for relaxation, entertainment, and wellness. In this transformation, pergolas have emerged as the perfect blend of form and function.
“More than just a seasonal structure, pergolas have become the defining symbol of modern outdoor living— where comfort meets style, and technology blends seamlessly with nature.”
- Evelyn Eschun
Evelyn Eshun Founder of Evelyn Eshun Design
THE PERFECT OUTDOOR UPGRADE
A pergola, at its core, is a simple structure—vertical posts supporting crossbeams—that offers partial shelter while remaining open to the elements. But its simplicity is precisely what makes it so adaptable. Whether it’s providing filtered shade over a dining set, framing an outdoor kitchen, or sheltering a cozy lounge area, a pergola helps create defined “rooms” in nature. It gives structure to the open outdoors, without the confinement of walls or ceilings. What makes pergolas particularly appealing today is their versatility. Homeowners can choose from a variety of materials—wood to, aluminum or vinyl for lowmaintenance durability, or steel industrial look. There are even motorized versions with retractable canopies or adjustable louvers that let you control sun and shade at the touch of a button. With such options, pergolas can be designed to match virtually any architectural style, from classic cottages to modern minimalist homes.
Evelyn Eshun is the founder of Toronto-based award-winning design firm Evelyn Eshun Design, renowned and respected for her thoughtfully designed projects. evelyneshun.com
As pergolas become essential backyard features, choosing the right material matters more than ever. While there are several great options available, aluminum is leading the way thanks to its sleek style, durability, and virtually maintenance-free appeal. Aluminum pergolas are redefining outdoor comfort, especially for modern homes, with powder-coated finishes available in a variety of colours and create a clean, minimalist design. They’re lightweight, rustproof, and ideal for Canada’s variable climates, offering long-lasting performance without the upkeep. Plus, aluminum integrates beautifully with tech upgrades like built-in lighting, motorized louvers, and smart home features, making it a top-tier choice for functionality and style. For those still exploring alternatives, wood remains a natural, timeless option, though it requires regular staining and sealing. Vinyl offers a clean look with minimal upkeep but comes in limited colours. Fiberglass, while pricier, is durable, paintable, and well-suited to custom projects—ideal for homeowners seeking high-end, long-span designs. If you’re considering a Canadian-made system, look at Suncoast Enclosures. Engineered to handle the country’s harshest weather, their premium aluminum pergolas offer adjustable motorized louvers, integrated drainage, and various retractable screen options, LED lighting, and radiant heaters for true four-season comfort.
Suncoast Enclosures
TECHNOLOGY MEETS TRANQUILITY
Modern pergolas are smarter than ever before. Thanks to technological advancements, many new models come equipped with LED lighting and weather sensors that automatically close the roof slats during rain. These features turn a simple shade structure into a multifunctional hub— ideal for everything from quiet morning coffees to evening dinner parties under the stars.
For homeowners focused on wellness and outdoor comfort, pergolas offer a seamless way to connect with nature. They provide protection from harsh sun without blocking natural
PRO TIP: DON’T FORGET ORIENTATION AND FUNCTION
Before building or buying a pergola, consider the sun’s path across your yard. Orienting your pergola to block the strongest afternoon sun—or positioning it near your kitchen, hot tub, or fire pit—can make a huge difference in how often and how comfortably you use the space.
light, promote airflow, and offer a sense of enclosure that encourages people to spend more time outside. Add climbing plants like wisteria or grapevines, and the structure becomes even more immersive, blending the built environment with the beauty of the outdoors.
A WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT
Beyond aesthetics and function, pergolas add tangible value to a home. According to real estate professionals, outdoor living improvements—especially permanent structures like pergolas—can boost curb appeal and increase property value. They’re often seen as luxury features that enhance a buyer’s perception of the home, especially when they’re integrated into a larger landscaping design plan.
As Canadians continue to make the most of their outdoor spaces, pergolas stand out as a top trend for summer 2025. They offer comfort, beauty, and functionality—all while enhancing the lifestyle potential of a property. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue, curling up with a good book, a pergola provides the ideal backdrop.
More than just a seasonal structure, it’s a statement: that outdoor living isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifestyle. And this summer, pergolas are leading the way.

Life can be basic or Life can be Artistic
Why is it that we believe that art is only meant for gallery spaces or kids school projects?
Art is all around us it lives and breathes our creativity, our self expression, and our passions. I’m highlighting a few local artists who don’t compromise or hold back, they are showing up exactly where they are and transforming the ordinary into something unforgettable.
Take Jodie Bergsma from Gohst town ink for example, she has built more than a business—she’s created a legacy of clients seeking skin that paints a picture and writes their story. They leave with empowerment, knowing their bold new image allows people who encounter them to see their creative side right away.
Jodie’s baby bump is glowing with new life and it couldn’t look anymore beautiful than it does right now enhanced by her selection of stunning tattoos.
Then there’s Lexi Bender a wildly imaginative local graphic and fine artist who recently moved into a sun-drenched Uptown loft—and turned it into a fine crafted psychedelic masterpiece. Her bold rhythmic brushstrokes ripple across the walls like music. Retro patterns play like a cosmic conversation with pop-art, something Warhol himself might have thought up in his prime. This diva didn’t simply decorate her space; she created it. Her loft now feels like a place where imagination runs barefoot and playful patterns delight her guests.

But art isn’t only visual. It can be edible, too. Enter chef Jared Wood and his life-partner My Nguyen the culinary artists behind the most breathtaking sushi platters on this side of Tokyo. Have you ever wondered what gorgeous art tastes like? It tastes like the Humble Lotus, fresh, creative, delicious, unique, surprising and perfect! Their creations are more than meals— they’re edible paintings, ephemeral expressions of joy and balance. You don’t just eat their food; you experience it.
What ties these creatives together is a simple, powerful truth: life can be basic or it can be artistic. They’ve chosen the latter. They have taken their craft to the next level offering those who encounter them an experience that is elevated beyond life’s norm. The best part is, it’s contagious.
The more we surround ourselves with these makers and dreamers, the more we’re inspired to find our own brush, our own voice, our own version of our creative selves. Let’s learn and grow by challenging ourselves to make our own piece of this world a little more beautiful and find ways to express our inner artistic side no matter what that looks like.

Why Do Dogs Bark?
Understanding Your Pup’s
WALKING ON THE
Most Common Behaviour
Jack Donovan, thedogcoach.ca
Dogs bark to communicate, but decoding the message can be tricky. Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside? Are they bored or seeking interaction? Is there a perceived threat? Recognizing the reason behind barking is essential to managing it effectively.
Why Do Dogs Bark?
Right Foot
Dogs bark for specific reasons, and recognizing the cause is essential.
Needs: Are they hungry, thirsty, or need to go outside?
Attention: Are they bored or seeking interaction?
Alerts: Is someone at the door, or is there a perceived threat?
By observing your dog’s body language and listening carefully, you can begin to understand what they’re trying to communicate.
How you respond to barking can determine whether it becomes a persistent habit. If your dog barks because they want to play, ignoring the behaviour can help discourage it. Any attention-positive or negative-reinforces the barking. When barking serves a practical purpose, like alerting you to an empty water dish, it’s important to acknowledge and address it promptly.
START CALM AND SET THE TONE
It’s tempting to rush out the door, leash in hand, just to get the walk started. But if your dog is already buzzing with excitement or nerves, that energy will follow you outside. Instead, take a deep breath and give your dog a moment to settle before you clip on the leash. A calm start sets the stage for a much smoother walk.
Jack Donovan thedogcoach.ca
Spring has sprung, the sun is shining, and it’s the perfect time to get outside with your canine companion. But if you have a reactive dog, those walks can sometimes feel more like a workout in patience than a leisurely stroll. Don’t worry-with a few simple tips, you can turn those stressful moments into enjoyable adventures for both you and your dog.
Our instinct when a dog barks for attention is often to shush them or tell them to stop. However, whether you use soothing words or scolding, your reaction reinforces the behaviour. The barking got a response-exactly what your dog wanted. To break this cycle, ignore attention-seeking barking completely.
this a few times so your dog learns that paying attention to you is way more rewarding than the distractions waiting outside.
Last fall, a client’s Goldendoodle, Charlie, had two types of barking. She would bark at the door to alert the family of a potential security threat and also bark for attention. While the door barking was helpful, the attention-seeking barking became problematic. By consistently ignoring this behaviour, Charlie learned it wasn’t rewarded. Instead, quiet behaviour earned positive reinforcement. Over time, she stopped barking for attention, but her helpful door barking remained. Tips to Manage Barking
KEEP THE CONNECTION ALIVE
Understand the Cause: Ask yourself, "Why is my dog barking? Is it a genuine need or testing boundaries?"
Stay Consistent: Avoid rewarding unnecessary barking. Even scolding reinforces the behaviour.
Redirect Behaviour: Engage your dog in a productive activity once they stop barking. Reward Silence: Praise and reward quiet behaviour to encourage it in the future.
REWARD THE GOOD STUFF
Before you even step outside, start reinforcing calm behaviour. When your dog checks in with you-maybe a quick glance or a sit-reward them with a treat or a gentle pat. Do
Barking is your dog’s way of communicating, but it doesn’t always require a response. By understanding why your dog barks and responding consistently, you can guide them toward more appropriate communication. With patience and clear boundaries, you’ll build a stronger bond with your dog while maintaining peace at home.
Once you’re on the move, don’t be shy about stopping every now and then to see where your dog’s focus is. If they’re looking at you, praise them like crazy! Toss a treat, give a cheerful “good job,” whatever works. If your dog’s attention drifts, no worries-just take a few steps back or even head back to your driveway to reset. Remember, this walk is about quality time, not how far you go.
BE PROACTIVE WITH TRIGGERS
Here’s the big one: when you spot another dog or person, don’t wait for your dog to react. Start working on their focus immediately. Use treats, praise, or a quick change of direction to get their attention back on you. If your dog’s too overwhelmed, it’s okay to call it a day and try again later. The goal is to catch the behaviour early and reward the good choices.
MAKE WALKS FUN AGAIN
Walking your dog should be a joy, not a battle. By setting a calm tone, rewarding attention, and staying one step ahead of triggers, you’ll both look forward to your daily outings. After all, a happy walk makes for a happy dogand a happy owner too!
NEED EXTRA HELP?
If you’re struggling with reactive behaviour or want personalized guidance, don’t hesitate to reach out to The Dog Coach. With expert support, you can build confidence and enjoy stress-free walks together. Your dog—and your peace of mind—will thank you!

• Ground black pepper as desired
• 12 oz pork sausages chopped in slices (lightly fried)
• 8 large eggs

In a large bowl combine lightly fried chopped pork sausages, potatoes, onion, peppers, seasoning, and salt and pepper, place mixture onto the Pro-Heat Pan.
When unit is preheated and ADD FOOD / PRS STRT is displayed, open door and place the pan on the rack. Close door, press START/STOP and cook until the unit indicates there is 7 minutes left of STAGE 2 cooking.

7 BAD SKIN HABITS TO BREAK RIGHT NOW
In the age of filters and flawless selfies, glowing skin is the ultimate beauty goal. But achieving radiant skin isn’t just about investing in expensive serums—it’s also about what you stop doing. Believe it or not, some of your daily habits could be sabotaging your skin without you even realizing it.
Here are 7 bad skin habits you need to break today—plus what to do instead.
SLEEPING WITH MAKEUP ON
After a long day, it’s tempting to skip the nighttime routine and fall into bed. But sleeping in makeup clogs pores, traps dirt and oil, and accelerates aging. It can even lead to breakouts and dullness.
Fix it: Keep micellar water or toner with cotton pads by your bed for nights you’re too tired to do a full cleanse. But remember—nothing beats a proper double cleanse.
OVER-EXFOLIATING
Scrubbing away dead skin feels satisfying, but going overboard can strip your skin’s barrier, causing redness, irritation, and sensitivity.
Fix it: Limit exfoliation to 1–2 times per week and opt for chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs) over harsh physical scrubs. Your skin should feel soft, not raw.
TOUCHING YOUR FACE CONSTANTLY
Whether it’s resting your chin in your hand or picking at blemishes, your hands carry oil and bacteria that can lead to breakouts.
Fix it: Keep your hands off your face—and out of your skincare. If your cream is in a jar, use a mini spatula to scoop out product instead of dipping hands in. Clean hands and clean tools (like makeup brushes) make all the difference.
SKIPPING SUNSCREEN
If you think SPF is only for sunny days, think again. UV rays can penetrate clouds and windows, leading to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and increased risk of skin cancer.
Fix it: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning—even in winter, even indoors.
USING TOO MANY PRODUCTS AT ONCE
Layering five serums and three moisturizers may feel luxurious, but it can overwhelm your skin and cause irritation.
Fix it: Simplify. Stick to a basic routine that includes a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Add active ingredients one at a time. Message us at SPAudrey for your best options!
Your phone touches your face daily. Your pillowcase? Every night. Both can accumulate oil, dirt, and bacteria.
Fix it: Clean your phone screen regularly with an alcohol wipe, and change pillowcases 1–2 times per week.
NEGLECTING HYDRATION (INSIDE AND OUT)
Dehydrated skin looks dull and accentuates fine lines. Many mistake dry skin for oily skin and skip moisturizer altogether.
Fix it: Drink plenty of water and use a hydrating moisturizer suited to your skin type. Even oily skin needs hydration—it just needs the right kind.
Well-Being Word Quest
FINAL THOUGHTS
Beautiful skin isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistency. By ditching these damaging habits and building smarter skincare routines, your skin will thank you with a natural, healthy glow. And remember: your skin is a reflection of how you treat yourself. Be kind to it.

Walking in the King’s Footsteps
Graceland
Walking onto the sun-drenched grounds of Graceland, there’s an immediate sense of stepping back in time. The elegant white-columned mansion, framed by towering oaks and a manicured lawn, stands as more than just a house. It’s a living testament to the life and legacy of Elvis Presley. Fans and curious travelers are drawn to the magnetic charm of walking the same halls that once echoed with the King’s laughter.
Craig Silva, @bigdaddykreativ
THE MANSION: A GLIMPSE INSIDE ELVIS’S WORLD
Graceland’s grand front doors open to a world preserved in all its 1970s glory. The living room, with its sparkling crystal chandelier and a grand white sofa, is a study in old Hollywood glamour. Just beyond, the dining room shimmers with its gleaming silverware and lush drapes, a space where Elvis entertained family and friends.
But the true heart of Graceland is the kitchen, a warm, lived-in space where staff would prepare everything from Southern comfort food to Elvis’s famous peanut butter and banana sandwiches. A few steps away, the Jungle Room steals the show. Its thick green carpet underfoot, dark wooden carvings, and a waterfall wall create a space that is both kitschy and somehow oddly soothing.
Downstairs, the Pool Room is a kaleidoscope of colours, with its walls and ceiling draped in bold, textured fabric. Nearby, the TV Room is a retro paradise, bright yellow and navy, with three TVs side by side, a nod to Elvis’s habit of watching multiple channels at once.
At the end of the mansion tour, a gentle hush falls as you enter the Meditation Garden. It’s here that Elvis rests, alongside his parents, grandmother, daughter, and grandson. Flowers and photos left by fans from around the world add a quiet beauty, a reminder of the deep, enduring connection between the King and his admirers.
BEYOND THE MANSION: A WORLD OF EXHIBITS
Just a short shuttle ride from the main house, Graceland’s museum complex offers a deeper dive into Elvis’s extraordinary life. Car enthusiasts will find joy at Presley Motors Automobile Museum, where a dazzling collection of Elvis’s vehicles awaits, from his iconic pink Cadillac to sleek Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The Archives Experience brings you face-to-face with an ever-changing selection of personal artifacts, from stage costumes to hand-written letters.
The Private Presley exhibit offers an intimate look at Elvis’s time in the U.S. Army, a transformative period in his life. Meanwhile, The ICONS gallery showcases other legends who were inspired by Elvis, a testament to his farreaching influence.
Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum pulls you into the heart of his superstar journey. Here, gold records line the walls, iconic stage outfits shimmer beneath the lights, and footage of his electrifying performances plays on loop. It’s a fitting tribute to a man whose voice and charisma left an indelible mark on music history.
A LASTING CONNECTION
Leaving Graceland, it’s hard not to feel a touch of nostalgia. The sprawling estate, both grand and surprisingly personal, offers a glimpse into the world of a man who was more than just a rock ‘n’ roll icon. He was a son, a father, and a friend. As you drive away, you can’t help but feel that, for a brief moment, you stepped into his world.
